[Graded][Kage Test] Clandestine Practices

The day after Hayate's battle with the lightning spirit Raijin, an emergency message was carried by eagle to Kumogakure. This letter was immediately taken to Hayate's house, at 5 am in the morning, and delivered to him personally. It read:

Nakajima

You, Nakajima Hayate, are hereby summoned to appear in the court of Daimyo Hojo, Masamune immediately to discuss urgent matters. Travel swiftly.

Hojo Clan Administration
Having arrived at Odawara, capital of the Lightning Country, Hayate was escorted directly to the Daimyou's court to await consultation. He was in a spacious reception room on the third story. With tatami mats on the floor and whitewashed walls, it was not a very interesting room however it held a table with a tea set on it right next to a row of three chairs on the left and right hand walls. Beside those tables sat two attendants, whom awaited one of the guests to request refreshment. The wall opposite the court chamber doors contained a large glass window overlooking a courtyard with a magnificent stone garden. Black and white pebbles were arranged in the shape of the Hojo symbol, while the centre triangle of the symbol lay below a triangular table accompanied by three benches. A better view could probably have been achieved from the floor below's balcony, but the window did its job.

One of the attendants looked up as Hayate entered through the open entryway beside her. "Good afternoon sir. The Daimyo will be with you shortly." she said in greeting, both women bowing low to the floor in their Hojo blue yukata. The afternoon summer sun blaring through the window heated the room slightly above comfortable levels, as could be seen by the slight sweat film on the women's faces.

"Tululila, Talila Tulula."

Nakajima Hayate woke up at 5am on the dot every day. He did this to train, usually, but more recently he did this to cook breakfast for his daughter who woke up around 6am. She was sort of his princess and he always wanted to make sure her daily training routine in the morning was backed up by a delicious and healthy meal. It was only 5 am, approximately 24 hours since the attack of Raijin. He was trying his best to just act like life was normal, until of course a carrier eagle rattled it's beak on his kitchen window.

He opened it and received the message, the bird flying back to it's owner. No sooner than this happened did he realize who the stamped belong to and what the contents of the letter would say. He opened it up, confirming that it was the Hojo administration... the daimyo... requesting his presence. How fantastic that would be. He would have to write a not to let Eiko know he'd be out of town.
It didn't matter how, least for you sake dear reader, that Hayate made it to the land of the Hojo. What mattered was he did, and he entered upon a room of tatami mats and whitewashed walls, a table with a tea set and a few chairs. It seemed the place he had been escorted too was some kind of meeting or tea room. There was a nice view from the window and it all made it clear that he was in the home of royalty, and not just any royalty. The royalty that had once conquered the lightning country and the same royalty gave its heart and hope and trust to the formation of Kumogakure.

The woman let him know the Daimyo would be in soon. Hayate nodded, thanking her after he was able to swallow the lump in his throat from haring the words "Daimyo." Damn. He was just a jounin.

The door to the Daimyo's office proper opened and an imposing figure filled the doorway. It shuffled forward into the afternoon sunlight, revealing his straw hat and dark clothing. As he lifted his head to appraise Hayate, the jounin may have recognized his rugged features as belonging to the enigmatic Bannin, Banri. He made an unintelligible grunt before shifting past Hayate, his footsteps tapping audibly on the creaky floor as he walked away. Now the doorway was blocked by a slim woman, not unlike the two who had waited in the Daimyo's reception room. She bowed politely and called Hayate inside.

Upon entering the room, he would find himself facing a stone wall lined with three banners. The royal blue of Hojo, the royal house of the Lightning Country, was in the center behind a massive red cedar desk. A few scrolls were neatly positioned on to one side of the desk, however the man behind it was interested only in the entering Jounin. "Good afternoon, Nakajima. I trust your journey went well?" the Daimyo questioned while placing a scroll he had just finished writing on in a drawer. His long dark brown hair fell below what Hayate could see because of the desk, and his warm honey coloured eyes seemed to understand and comfort all that they fell upon. The Daimyo was young, 27, and had only held his seat for four years, as his father had stepped down because of his age weary mind and body. This youthful appearance and kind, soothing voice gave a fresh feeling to the entire room, which would have been very bland without his presence. This man knew what he was doing when it came to working a room.

At the Daimyo's pleasantry a man who stood apart from the others, who wore yukata, snorted. The expression of distaste caused his armor to make a harsh clinking sound, emphasized by the black colour of his plate. Behind the man was the emerald and black banner of the Kusakabe, Kyounin to the Hojo and Lord of the Kaminarimon, the gate through which all who would enter the country overland must pass. His face was hidden behind a black steel mask depicting the face of a demon. This man was a renowned general among a family of renowned generals, a pinnacle of strategical and physical strength, and it showed in his demeanor. His military discipline was evident in his hard seiza position with which he sat upon his emerald cushion on the tatami floor off to Hayate's left.

To the right was another Kyounin who bore the stark white and stone grey colours of the Hashiji, the Hojo's greatest allies and supporters. The man was, however, a direct contrast to the warming Daimyo, as he seemed to be carved out of the very ice and snow his province was famed for. His ghostly pale complexion and raven black hair tied back into a loose topknot combined with his unforgiving expression to make him seem just as dangerous, if not more so, than the man wearing full armor. Unlike Kusakabe whose weapons were laid at his side, Hashiji carried no blade, only a fan to cool himself in the warmer summer. The man was used to frigid tundra, after all. Hashiji appeared to be in his late thirties and the resulting experience and knowledge that came from his age surrounded him like an aura. The man seemed as timeless as a glacier.

The three had their attention focused on Hayate, and apart from those four people, the room was silent. It was more of a massive hall than an office, with a great fireplace behind Kusakabe which blazed to give light in the windowless stone room. Completely ignoring Kusakabe's rudeness, Masamune Hojo continued, "Do you know why you have been called here today?" came the words, acting like a ray of light between the two beasts of shadow which seemed to lurk to either side of the shinobi.

It was not long before the Daimyo's office door opened, a giant and imposing figure in the door way. It was a figure wrapped in dark clothing, a large straw hat obscuring most of his face beyond his rugged stubble. For a moment, Hayate swore the man stared at him in scoffed, but he wasn't positive. Regardless the man made his way out of the chambers. It wasn't until after the receptionist called for him to enter the room that he recalled who the figure was. It was Banri. That Banri. The man was an enigma, beyond the fact that he was Akino's competitor for the title of eight Raikage. He had a bad reputation, though he still was the commander of black ops... and perhaps the strongest shinobi in Kumogakure currently.

Hayate's mind raced at why they had both been summoned here so hurriedly. It was clear that the events of the day prior meant Kumogakure and the Lightning Country was unstable. The shinobi village was without it's leader, and to any enemies of Kumo and Lightning Country this would be a golden opportunity. So clearly, they were both here because... they were candidates to be the next Raikage? It was kind of shocking to him. Now within the room, his eyes scanned it, making note of everything. The scenery was nice, but really nothing special for the meeting room of what essentially was the royal family of the entire country.

Before he could fully take in his environment the Daimyo addressed him. Hayate bowed graciously, returning back up to his normal posture before returning the Daimyo's words.

"Good afternoon, Daimyo-sama. My journey was well, how was your morning?" he said with a kind gentle smile. The Daimyo was a year younger than him and both had similar mannerisms- the two being very charismatic men. Hayate couldn't help but hope Banri's lack of charisma hurt him, because in truth while he didn't know much about Banri, he didn't trust him.

To the Daimyo's left was the Lord of the Kaminarimon. He was a military mastermind and an extremely powerful man, but Hayate didn't know much more than that. He seemed to scoff too, just like Banri. Assuming he was correct on what this meeting was about, and that the two men held similar ideologies, Hayate noted that Banri was probably his personal choice.

To the right was however was a Hashiji, the Hojo's greatest allies and supporters. He was amolst like a ghost and serene, not just in looks, but lack of emotion or words. He didn't know what this man likely thought of him.

Cutting through the intimidating auras of the two men, the Daimyo spoke, and Hayate answered. His earlier gleaming smile left as he took on a more serious and business tone. This topic was far from a joke.

"To fill the vital shoes left in Akino's wake. My people mourn the loss of Akino, our guiding star... however the loss of our kage and leadership puts Kumogakure and the entire country in a very precarious state." his eyes blinked before he continued. "I assume Lord Banri and I were summoned for this reason... him due to his past and power... and me... regardless of just being a jounin recent events have left me a wildcard..."

He didn't truly have confidence to fill Akino's shoes yet, however, if his hunch was true... he simply could not let this Banri man become Raikage. He would have to work hard and raise to the occasion to protect his people for the best.

Masamune began to laugh and clap as Hayate finished his serious assessment. He leaned back in his chair and let forth his amusement, his laugh a cascade of pleasing notes, a song far too pure for mortal ears. The other two lords simply looked on, Kusakabe seemingly disapproving of the entire world and Hashiji intently observing the young Jounin. After a few minutes, Kusakabe cut the Daimyo's laughing short, as surely as he would cut any man, with an efficient "Daimyo-sama.", wasting no energy.

Masamune cleared his throat as he took control of himself, and continued, "Yes, well, that's correct up to a point, but don't be so down on yourself," he said. With a flourish, the young man unfurled a new scroll and gracefully dipped his small brush in the available ink before beginning to write in small print. "Okay, we're just going to ask you a few questions today. You see, the Raikage isn't just a leader of the shinobi village, it is also one of the seven lord positions in our country. I'm sure you know how our history goes. Anyway, in order to keep his place among the lofty heights in my court, the Raikage must be competent," Hojo began to explain "Meaning that I do not want a minister for intelligence that cannot do his job. But, even if the village of Kumogakure chooses a total idiot for Raikage, I must still have my lord, you see? It has only ever happened once before that the Raikage and the lord of Kumogakure province were different people.. Masamune paused here, as a look of loss and regret passed over him. Hashiji chose this moment to comment, so as to fill the silence for his king.

"The winter of two shadows was short, but brutal." he provided, drawing Hayate's attention so that he may look straight into the shinobi's eyes, "Neither candidate survived, along with countless others as the nation stood on the brink of civil war, and destruction." he concluded ominously.

"So, I must make the right decision in whom I support for appointment." Hojo continued, picking up after his moment of grief, "Therefore, I will ask you a few questions and then set you a task to perform to display your competence. Unless, of course, you do not wish to be the Lord Raikage?" Masamune asked, leaving the question open to the Jounin.

Masamune began to laugh and clap following Hayate's assessment. If that wasn't enough he began to chuckle to himself. Hayate couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. The Daimyo was thoroughly amused with his answer. Unsure of how to react Hayate stayed quiet deciding to wait and react. Eventually Kusakabe shut down the Daimyo's laugh making it clear he wanted to get to the point.

Masamune surprisingly went along with Kusakabe without showing any aggression or anger at having been interrupted. It seemed he got along with the two lords before him, at least... which was refreshing given the current state of affairs. After all coming from the Nakajima family Hayate was well aware of the political tension between the Lords. He nodded along with the Daimyo's words and even to that of Hashiji who had decided to finally speak, filling the gap his lord had left.

Finally the Daimyo confirmed why he was here. Masamune sought to test his mettle and see if he was the proper choice to back as a Lord. Hayate was very close in his guess. Still this meant Banri was the other choice and operating on his hunches he could not let that man gain control of the village.

"Despite all that I've gone through I could never give up my ambition to become Raikage. Far too many people have laughed at my dream..." he breathed for a moment "and more importantly far more people have placed their trust in me. Many dreams ride upon my shoulder and to give up now would be pitiful." he said bowing his head.

"All the doubt that once lingered in my heart is gone, the only thing remaining is a spark: a spark to serve my people, you, and this great country. I accept your questions and your task, Daimyo-sama."

It had been a long battle, and even longer to forgive himself, but here in front of the Daimyo he would put the title of Raikage on the line.

"Ah.. I see." Masamune replied, after clearing his throat again. He continued to write quickly on the scroll in front of him, and the other two lords had begun to do the same. "A fine answer, if ever I heard one." Clearly Hayate's serious nature was throwing off his mood a little, even though he had been trying to lighten the room.

"I guess I'll start with the first question then. How do you plan to handle the current crisis of Kumogakure no sato?" Hojo asked, looking down at his paper now rather than at the Jounin. The other two lords seemed to barely even be paying attention now, focussing almost entirely on their scrolls.

[Graded][Kage Test] Clandestine Practices

Hayate was certainly receptive when it came to those around him, and he could tell that the man before him had been trying to lighten the mood in contrast to the two other who were quite grim almost in there seriousness. He was too for the moment but it was because the topic at hand was a grave one and Kumogakure was precious to him. He was quite the joke but even that question was too much to kid about on.

He nodded as Masamune let his first question through.

"First and foremost we need to restore order and strength to Kumogakure. As I said it's in a fragile state, especially given the political state of Lightning Country and Kumogakure itself. Without leadership and some order things could degrade quickly, especially if the right organizations are able to work their way in." he paused. A few people who would take advantage of this situation came to mind.

"Of course it's important because the safety of our people will be challenged, and if our province is any weaker than the others we no longer become a well oiled cog in the system. We could risk damaging the entire country." he nodded and sighed slightly. It was a grave situation indeed.

"However I need to keep my people happy and involve the community. Now more than ever is a time to come together and keep our spirits up. It's just as important as repairing defenses and infrastructure to rekindle the spark within us all." he gestured widely, a grin finally falling upon his face. Thinking of his people made him happy.

"Next of course following the re-stabilization of infrastructure, government, and people is continuing to recover knowledge lost from the Kage building's destruction and also intel on the threat we faced and the situation as a whole. Some organizations did not act to their full capacity and... some figures... were not even present for whatever reason. Enemies aside I must be honest in saying the response of our defenses was pitiful and lacking and that peace may have dulled our blades and weakened our bodies, but I do not spite or curse anyone for this. Instead I want to gather intel from this situation and use it to fix the wholes and weaknesses this attack showed us, which leads me to my point."

He blinked once and breathed in and out.

"I want to use this tragedy to strengthen my province and my country. Though horrific and sad we cannot let it be just that... It is valuable information which showed weaknesses and issues we faced. I hope to turn it from just a tragedy to also a learning situation and reconstruct my village, our policy, and reach for a better day. I realize there's more I could tell you but I don't wanna bore you, so is that adequate or should I continue Daimyo-sama?" he asked with a grin, his eyes closing from it.

He didn't want to bore the man to death.

"Okay." Masamune replied after listening intently and noting down Hayate's answer. He had looked directly at Hayate for the duration of his little spiel, showing no sign of a loss of interest. However, he didn't show anything like approval or disappointment either. He simply passively absorbed the information that the shinobi was giving him, missing not even the slightest of details.

"Answer these two questions and then we are finished. The first is Lord Kusakabe's question: would you recommend Roppongi Banri for the position of Raikage, and what reasons can you give to justify your answer? The second comes from Lord Hashiji: what will you do to end this ridiculous feud between the six remaining lords of Lightning? Answer both honestly and do not fear redemption, the information will not leave this room and we three will not take action against you personally as a result of your words. This will only be considered in your candidacy for Raikage." Hojo dictated, reassuring Hayate that his answers would not be used to condemn him in the future. It was important that the three lords, especially the Daimyo, received his honest answers in order to gauge the weight of his character.

[Graded][Kage Test] Clandestine Practices

Masamune went from his joking self to a state of pure observation. Everything Hayate said he was clearly absorbing and he would have to be careful, however not careful enough where he would seem insincere. Not that he wasn't sincere, but generally that's how these interview type things went. After he finished, he was asked to answer questions of the two men near him.

The first was Lord Kusakabe's question and it asked what he thought of Roppongi Banri as Raikage. This was troublesome. He did not wish to badmouth or bad talk another candidate, even if he had reasonable doubt in the man's character... It did not feel right, however he had reasonable doubt and his gut told him to go with his feelings on the matter and to stay true, for even if he was incorrect it was better to voice the concern. It would take a moment but after nodding he resolved that he would in fact do just that, moving to face Kusakabe more clearly.

"I do not know Lord Banri all that well... He is a ninja of legendary strength and a valuable asset to lightning country and Kumogakure, that much is true... however his methods tend to raise question and my gut tells me not to trust him. As Black Ops commander his post is almost as vital as the Kage in controlling the influx of information and intelligence. The fact that this all happened under him with none of us the wiser, especially when Black Ops was well aware of this threat from 7 years ago bothers me. The fact that in the end it was a Black Ops captain whose body was used to infiltrate the village raises even more question, and while we don't know why he knew of none of this, the part that bugs me the most is that he had a complete lack of presence in the attack that transpired yesterday... this along with what I've heard about his dark past with Akino leaves a bad feeling in my gut." Hayate sighed.

"Just hypothesis and such, but deep in my gut I feel concern towards that man, so I must be honest and voice it. I don't doubt he has the desire for the best for Kumogakure in his heart but there's too much doubt around every other aspect of his being to me." Hayate nodded, concluding his statements on Banri.

The second question which came from Lord Hashiji now required his attention. He adjusted his positioning so that he faced Lord Hashiji this time.

"I'm afraid these feuds are centuries old and no simple peace talk or politics will just end them, milawd. " his face contorted for a minute as his head shook side to side. "It is indeed a ridiculous situation but none the less requires our attention. Four of Six provinces get along for the most part, or allegiance to Daimyo being our main trait." These four lords of course being the 3 in front of him and Kumogakure, which always sided with the Daimyo.

"Ruling out creating a common enemy or situations like that which are kind of outlandish without solving our own domestic issues, it would make sense that focusing on the two most problematic provinces would make the most impact. Exercising military might in a situation like this is never a good answer. I realize this is the answer to some but this just cultivates hate and anger for further generations. In stead gathering as to why these issues are occurring and then trying to appease concerns would work in our favour. It's also important to realize that each province does ultimately rely on another in some form of trade, so using that we could possibly spir some nationalism or pride in our one combined nation could lead to some benefits, however." he nodded to the lords.

"It's a complex situation but I believe addressing concerns in a fair and honest matter will build trust. Following trust treating every province individually in the sense of... well their unique talents and strengths that they bring to the country will help emphasize the importance of us all working as one and potentially help cultivate nationalism. Of course along with that we absolutely need to increase communication on all fronts. Most issues are simply just miscommunications at the root- or at least could be solved with proper communicating strategies." Hayated nodded, then concluded his answers.

He was keeping it to the point and clean, or at least attempting too.

Kusakabe snorted as Hayate finished his answers to both questions. "Your naive, idealistic expectations are remarkably-" The armoured man began to say but was cut off by Hashiji's interjection "Enough, Kusakabe-dono. You were told the conditions of your presence here." He chastised sternly.

Hojo lifted his hands, trying to still the two lords. "Both of you be still." he commanded, and both squabbling men fell silent. "At least behave yourselves in front of a guest." the stressed young man commented as he shut his eyes and massaged his temples.

"I'm sorry about that Nakajima. Now, the three of us have made our verdicts." He began as he unrolled one of the drawers and placed the scroll within. He shut the drawer and locked it with a small key tied around his wrist. Hashiji placed is scroll up one of his very long sleeves, and did not come back out. Kusakabe's was already gone before Hayate would have a chance to look. "All that remains is the matter of the task." Masamune continued, "Rather than tell you, I'll ask you what you think the task is. He finished with a wry smile.

Following Hayate's answers, Kusakabe let loose yet another snort. He then began to curse Hayate and would have continued to give up more information had Hashiji not interrupted him. Regardless, Hayate's assumption was safely correct. This man was likely not an idealist and held beliefs likely closer to what Banri would think, which meant as Hayate had originally assumed he likely did not have Kusakabe's vote.

Either way he was honest in his assessment and no matter what went on beneath the scenes, idealism needed to be the face of strenuous political situations. Logically this was probably why despite all of Banri's rumoured lust for Kage and dislike of Akino, Akino allowed him to be his commander of the Black OPS.

Hayate's mouth opened slightly to respond but was cut short as Hojo-sama lifted his hand and quieted the two lords. Hayate would remain an observer and keep to his place for the time being. Hojo-sama would begin to procure another scroll.
The Daimyo now smiled, almost making a game out of the scroll's contents.

Hayate smiled too.

"Oh, you're enjoying this, aren't you? I assume it's some sort of mind-testing task... something to test me as an "intelligence minister", perhaps... a game of sorts, a puzzle.".

He chuckled but his eyes carried a serious and competitive glance. His adrenaline was kicking in!

"Shall we, Daimyo-sama?"

Masamune chuckled again at Hayate's answer. "I suppose we could call it a game." He replied mischievously, his expression suddenly taking on a very predatory appearance. "A game where you will have to bet everything to play." He added mysteriously.

"Here's what's going to happen. In five minutes, you will be escorted from this palace and the gates will be closed behind you. Hashiji and Kusakabe will have already left by then." Masamune continued, pausing to wave his two lords out. "Once you are locked out, you will have exactly twenty four hours to inform me of exactly what it is one of the three of us have written in our scrolls. Any of the three is fine." He said as the two lords left the room.

Hojo stood at this point and walked over towards a tray, pouring himself a cup of tea. "Allow me to remind you now that being caught in this castle while the gates are locked without invitation is considered an act of treason and punishable by death, even to the Raikage. So..." The explanation continued, only pausing as Hojo turned around to add dramatic effect, "Will you play my game?"

The Daimyou's laughing was getting longer and scarier and it was starting to scare the shit out of him. It was mischievous as fuck, he wasn't gunna lie. And he was scared. He had to bet something, but what could he possibly bet? Damn. This was getting scary.

"Here's what's going to happen. In five minutes, you will be escorted from this palace and the gates will be closed behind you. Hashiji and Kusakabe will have already left by then." Hayate's eyes widened. "Once you are locked out, you will have exactly twenty four hours to inform me of exactly what it is one of the three of us have written in our scrolls. Any of the three is fine."

Well this was ridiculous.

"Well it's likely not filled with smiley faces and scribbles.... and I don't really have a choice. If I lose, Banri wins and I can't let that happen. And besides, I can give up everything for Raikage.

Let the game begin."
he chuckled. "You like me right, Daimyo-sama? Let me have your scrolls!." he said jokingly, making exaggerated pls-mummy cute eyes like a child. He was stressed now, and when he was stressed that's when his sense of humour kicked in.

Once escorted out, Hayate would have to locate Hashiji, but how would he do so?

Masamune laughed heartily at Hayate's jokes, moving back to sit at his desk. "While your humor is appreciated, I think you should make the most of all the time available." He advised sagely, turning to other paperwork which sat on his desk.

The two maids from outside escorted Hayate out of the gates, which swiftly shut behind him. He had free run of the entire city, minus the Daimyo's castle. The city was crowded, as the capital of a nation was want to be, full of people and bureaucrats going about their business.

"It's already begun, Daimyou-sama." Hayate said as he bowed. Within seconds two maids escorted him from the room, and even sooner, from the palace. The guts swiftly shut behind him, reverberating heavily. He put his hands together, sealing as his body surged with chakra, most of it going to his mind.

Invading the palace to steal the scrolls is the hardest solution. He began to try and work things out. Each Lord had a scroll. The wisest thing would be to find them both, not at the same time, but at least at some point. The palace invasion was becoming increasingly more desirable. At least he knew where the hell the palace was. I'll take to the roof to maximize my view, from there, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for any possible sort of detail that could lead me to one of the feudal lords... I'll hopefully find the one that likes me, and at least they're still in this city.

Oh, his work was indeed going to be arduous.

Hopefully as his eyes scanned up and down every street and building scrutinizing them and the people around them he'd catch a lead.

Even with his augmented mental capabilities, finding Lord Hashiji was like trying to find a certain grain of a sand on a beach. He seemed to have disappeared into thin air. Kusakabe kyounin, however, was easily spotted as he walked down the main esplanade in his full black armour, causing commuters to stop and watch him as he travelled towards his place of residence in the capital. He seemed to be heading west, in the direct opposite direction of the Daimyou's palace.

Well, finding his likely ally had proved... unhelpful. Wherever the man was he was out of sight now, Hayate's best guess was that he was in his home in the capital... which finding would be a bitch. On the other hand his biggest skeptic and opponemt Kusakabe was easy to spot. He was walking down the main esplanade in full black armour, everyone watching him as he walked about. He was heading in a direction away and west of the Capital building.

Hayate pursued him. When he neared, he'd pull up aside him, bowing his head.

"Lord, sir." he said, his head bowing once more. The man would know why he was here.

"I'd like to inquire two things: what is in the scroll... and what you think about me. Scratch that. What you think about the questions the Daimyou asked me." Hayate said with a serious gaze.

"You're a valuable and important man, and the reason there's more than 1 lord is because we each bring something valuable to the table, be it a sight or physical or tactical strength, and I'd like to hear your view on the matters." he said bowing once more graciously.

Kusakabe turned towards Hayate as he spoke, facial expression totally hidden by the mengu he wore. After the Jounin finished, there was silence. Tension built and the crowd that had gathered murmured nervously. Women briskly pushed their children along, willing them to get away from the man in armour who seemed so unnaturally still. The whole crowd could hear his slow, deliberate intake of breath as he closed his eyes gently, head rocking backward. As he opened his eyes he glared intently at Hayate, and an intense blood-lust charged the tense air. With a terrified shriek, people began to climb over each other in order to scramble away from this demonic aura that emanated from the lightning country's greatest warrior.

"I do not wish to neither hear your pretty words nor answer your petty questions. I have almost single handedly defended our nation out of respect and honour for Lord Hojo from external threat for my entire life. My king has given me a task and I will complete it, as is my duty. I know my place, and I think you should get back in yours. There is no 'we' between us, Nakajima Hayate. You are a tool of a tool, a whetstone with which to sharpen the blade of our nation. I will not entertain such fanciful thinking that you are among us Kyounin as equals, and I will do my utmost to make sure that you never become so. Now leave me."

There was nothing but an absolute and complete aura of disgust around Kusakabe. It was like the air every where around him darkened, as he turned. People began to push themselves along and out of the way. They began to move off, to flee. Hayate himself could feel the blood lust as Kusakabe cocked a blood-lust filled stare at him. Good. It seemed he confirmed this guy didn't like him. And then he delivered his speech.

You see, by now everyone else was shrinking back in fear and scurrying off. Hayate on the other hand held his ground and began to chuckle. It started quiet, and than it moved on. It got louder, and louder, as he held his belly in a deep laugh. As if to contrast his laughter his darkest and most serious tone suddenly cut through the air and the aura about him, his eyes tightening and staring right back at Kuskabe.

"Oh, hush. You sound so vile and angry. I mean, I would be too if a massive threat somehow got into our country under my and Banri's watch." he didn't blink.

"Respecting those above you and holding honour for them is an easy task any plebeian is capable of. Respecting those who may be below you is a true display of an honorable man. There is a 'we' between us. You can say whatever shit you want, you can say I am a tool, but then again I'm not the one saying I almost single handedly defended my nation just out of respect and honour for my lord, which I might add is like a text book example of a tool." he smirked. He rubbed his palms for a moment in thought. Heh, he was lucky seals didn't rub off. He rubbed his palms together a lot lately.

"You don't need to think we're equal. I don't give a shit what you think about me. You're allowed to live in whatever fairy tail world you wish to live in. But I do give a shit about this country and my province, Kumogakure, and I do give a damn about everyone's opinions on perplexing situations effecting all those, so instead of acting like a toddler it'd do you well in the future to make an effort to be more than an angry brooding brute."

His cold tone ended. It felt good to get the chance to speak, if you could call it that, with this asshole. Banri's Black Ops and this guy charged with protecting borders from external threats clearly had slipped up. If he didn't want to participate and just wanted to look worse, that was fine to Hayate.

"I guess we're done here." he said with a smile, going right back into a chirpy mood. It was terrifying how he could do that. He'd have to find out where the other lord was lodging.

As soon as Hayate finished speaking, the blood lust disappeared. Everything happened quickly then. In less than a moment the space between the two people vanished, and a hard blunt object was fracturing Hayate's left humerus. The Jounin was flung meters to the right as the Lord lowered his left arm. "It seems you are intent on following your father's legacy as a viper. I have spared you this time out of respect for my Lord's wishes to entertain this idiotic idea of your candidacy, but I will not do so again if you speak out of turn, soldier. Approach me without consent again and you will receive the same fate. You have made an enemy of me this day." the lord berated Hayate furiously, before turning around and walking off.

OOCShow
Well, there's no way I don't have time for this.
He didn't need his wit about him any more. His body stopped holding his buff, it fading from existence as he breathed in following his speech. From the corner of his eyes he noticed the man before him's arm ever so slightly begin to twitch. As a jounin, he had learned to focus on things like this with his super human capabilities. You watched an opponents eyes and shoulders, that was the most important thing.

This guy was fast. So fast, Hayate had no choice but to use his trump card and even then he'd probably barely deflect the blow- but hey, it'd minimize damage to him and that was worth it. It'd also show one of the secret techniques he'd pioneered. His hands already out and ready, he channeled to his palm, shifting it up in the process. It would be swift, and the orb would form between his hand and the incoming hard-object. It would at best deflect the hit off course into a miss, and at least provide a buffer. And that's what happened. The man's strike was deflected up ever so slightly and it's impact slightly absorbed, but it still hit and wasn't the most plea sent feeling.

Hayate lowered his head. He was trembling.

"You're scum." he looked up, his eyes glaring. "A man came to you with open arms and an open heart to ask you a question because he cared for you opinion. Your ego and unwillingness to even try turned him away with insult, and then he struck back with word.

And you struck back with insult... and force? You physically attacked him? Lashing out in insult and physical force against someone you deemed so weak and naive, yet you'd go to that level of aggression? Lord Kusakabe I expected more from you."

Hayate shook his head side to side.

"You bring up my father, but you fail to notice you embody the same beliefs as him, and you act just as he did." Hayate breathed in heavily. "Let me be your enemy. I have no time for men like my father in this world- men that will only cause more pain. More hatred. More fear. More orphans..." He screamed, then chuckled.

"I pegged you to be a man of dignity and of sterner stuff than to solve your woes with your fists and battle, but I guess you lot are all alike. You're all horribly mistaken with your realist views, casting aside hope and the right path."

He sighed a final time.

"But Lord Kusakabe. You are not my enemy and I forgive you. I forgive you and I hope that some day we can work together to create true peace and harmony in this beautiful land we both love."

With that, Hayate turned around and walked away. He didn't need the last word. This man's honor, dignity... it had all been smashed here, whether he thought so or not. Hayate had stood up to him, and Hayate had turned his harsh words and actions onto him.

He only hoped someday Kusakabe could feel how he did.

"Have a good day, I guess I should have just ignored my skeptic instead of hoping to share thoughts with him."

Hayate would search for citizens around the palace and nearby, asking for leads on where the other Lord's lodgings were.

Kusakabe stared at the twisted metal hanging from his hand as Hayate spoke. When he finished, he looked up from his hand and calmly spoke. "I hereby take you into custody for raising arms against a Lord. Your fate will be decided by the Daimyou, as we are in his domain." Kusakabe reached out with his armoured arm to clasp Hayate's shoulder in order to guide him through the city towards the Daimyou's mansion.

Hayate's eyes wandered side to side as he repelled his opponents attack, completely ravaging the armor on his arm. He couldn't help but grin. This man was scum- no he was worse than it. He abused his power and let it put him "above" someone else. He refused a man who came to him with open arms, and worse, he attacked someone who engaged him in a discussion because he could. He couldn't help but shake his head to that.

Men like this were why the Lightning Country suffered. As he put his hand out to apprehend Hayate, the once stalwart man had broken. This world suffered because of politics, because of men like this, and finally, it had all made sense.

This was his task, this was his reason for being. He would end this all. All of the corruption and farce that the great countries and villages were. He owed it to the world- he owed it to them to be their saviour!

With Kuskabe's arm outstretched for him, he raised his hands slowly, and when Kusakabe would move to apprehend him and tie him, his hand would suddenly pivot, and in just a moment he would launch a jutsu and crush the mans head, to the point of his blood smearing him. This would be the first time the blood of an ally would be on his hands, but it would not be the last. He just set in motion a horrible chain of events- and from here he'd have to flee.

I'll protect this land, even if it doesn't want my protection.

His heart hurt for his daughter, for Nayumi, for all those he loved. He only hoped they would forgive him and that he could fill the holes in his heart with his lofty ambitions.

Yesterday it was Kumo. Today it was Lightning Country. Tomorrow, it's the world.

The Kyounin was taken unawares and took the jutsu in full force to the head, hitting the ground with a sickening squelch. The ground beneath Hayate was dyed an incriminating crimson as the citizens who had all taken shelter screamed in their homes from where they watched, panic quickly ensuing. The old fashioned Kyounin, staunch and loyal supporter of the Hojo administration, Kusakabe Takimitsu had been reduced to no more than a slab of meat. With the fuss they had kicked up prior to this and the panic of the common folk, the city watch was sure to be on its way.

His adrenaline had been kicking so hard, he didn't even notice or think of the fact that he had easily slaughtered the Kyounin Kusakabe. The bastard had tried him, and the bastard had shown him the truth beyond the ugly world of today. The ugly world of feudal systems. The ugly world he had refused to see earlier.

He took off running full steam for the wall. He scanned his surroundings with his eyes all the while, and while he ran, he began to repair the seals on his hands the bets he could without slowing himself to an extreme.

It was a shame things had to go down this way, but as was life. He'd have to escape for now and rally strength because the retribution for his actions would likely be a civil war. A civil war at his hands- a war that would kill many of his countrymen.

He continued to run, the guilt not weighing him down.

I'll make sure that Kumogakure lives and the only one who pays any price is me.

Not yet knowing exactly what had happened, the city watch was slow to wake as Hayate sped for the edge of the nation's capital. Just as he reached the wall proper, a small scroll bashed into the polished granite surface, bouncing off of the rocky exterior. Standing right behind Hayate was Hashiji, the second Kyounin Hayate had been expected to scout, hand lingering before him from throwing the object. "If this is truly your answer, I am quite disappointed." He said ominously as the three guards behind him moved to circle him, placing his back to the wall.

Hashiji closed his eyes in frustration as he turned back to face the castle. Murakami would mobilise his army as soon as he received word that Kusakabe was dead. He didn't have much time to waste on the traitorous shinobi. "Tell me this, at least. Why did you do it?"

Hayate's eyes glistened and he locked his gaze on the Kyounin that stood in his way. There was no rage or malice in his eyes, hell, not even an aura of these feelings around Hayate. He was calm. Without hesitation, without even time to formulate any kind of bogus story, he spoke.

"I came to that man looking for his thoughts. I came to pick his brain. Instead he only offered insults. Instead, he only ignored me, like the problems this capitol and this country continue to ignore." he paused. "Instead he chose to attack me, and I rose to defend myself. It was in that precise moment that I realized that I have been a fool and that this country is sick because of men like him, and lack of men like you." Hayate coldly spoke, his body surging with energy. It was clear that he intended to harm no one else here.

"If eliminating a man like him, who's existence only furthers the pain my countrymen and the country I love so dearly makes me an enemy of the state I'm gladly able to take on that pain." His fists were steadily at his side.

"I have taken the worst wound I could ever today- those who loved me no longer will- the woman I love. The daughter I care so deeply for... because I have branded myself a traitor. I have thrown away the dream that allowed me to live as long as I have... the dream of Raikage that every last damn person I've cared about put their faith in me for... but this is why I have no doubts or fears in my heart. I'll never forget them or stop loving them, and it's because of this that I'm willing to sacrifice everything."

He grinned, getting ready to take off up the wall, he'd keep charging his body and dashing with every last ounce of spirit he had.

"My answers changed. I'm not going to dance around a civil war, or dance around the pride and feelings of others. Let a war come. I'll protect everyone myself. I'll fight every last battle and defy the odds, because I'm not going to back down when the fate of this country is on the line. I'll confront everyone head on and I won't stop until this country is united not as seven separate lands but as one true country. I don't care if I'm remembered, but I do know this: the textbooks will speak of a country where everyone had the privileges I grew up with. A country that was ours, a country that was united as one land!"

The mere spirit of Hayate was overwhelming. He would not die here. He would not die until everyone was united, even if he had to go as far as uniting everyone against himself!

Watch over me, Kushina.

As soon as Hayate jumped over the wall, two of Hashiji's samurai guards stepped forward to pursue. "Follow but do not act. I do not want to send two of my retainers home in coffins." he commanded as the pair leapt first onto a rooftop and then onto the wall in order to follow behind Hayate.

Hashiji then turned to the remaining warrior, gesturing to the horn he kept at his belt. "Two long, followed by two short one long." the lord instructed before walking past the warrior back toward the centre of the city. The first two horn blasts rang out High Alert!. Then the following three Units Pursue! As the last note was brought into the world, a man with an oversized sack and a straw hat looked up at the sky and sighed.

The two samurai followed Hayate, and were about 6 yards behind him. Hayate was faster though, and would find it easy to gain ground if he chose. The area outside the wall was bare stone for about a hundred yards before entering the capital's township, where the majority of the middle and lower class lived.

Landing on the other side of the wall Hayate took off at an alarming rate. He could sense two men on his tail and this bothered him. It bothered him cause these men did not have the same feeling Hashiji had to him, and as his glances confirmed, they were mere footmen. Had his words swayed Hashiji? There was no way he would have escaped otherwise. Either way Hayate couldn't mess this chance to escape up. He continued, and tried to make it to the outskirts of the town, sticking to unpopulated roads. He couldn't endanger a single life that didn't need to be endangered.

In the corner of his eyes, tears formed with each step, and with each step, his life flashed before his eyes. His birth. His friends. Everyone he loved. Everyone he lost. His village. His dream. Everything. From here there was no going back. He had to give up everything- everything that had made him this strong and had allowed him to persevere to this point.

Still, each step was more determined than the last, for that day Hayate had awakened a new source of power. He was no longer driven by his community. He was driven by the world.

The samurai that followed Hayate, while dropping behind due to their lack of speed, were not lost completely as Hayate hesitated in order to select the streets without too many people. Not that the samurai pair really wanted to kill their own people. As they followed, they jumped toward the centre of the road and used each other as spring boards to leap up onto the rooftops, pursuing him from above.

The man in the straw hat sped across the rooftops of the city and over the wall. Even from there he could see the samurai leaping from building to building, slowly falling behind the Jounin. It would not be long until he caught up to them.

Hayate lost some ground as he contemplated the safest streets. He knew the samurai wouldn't hurt their own people, but the issue was his fighting style was far too destructive to fight in open roads, if it came to it. For someone who had talked so much he still wasn't ready to make "necessary sacrifices" just yet. He was off on his way moving fast when suddenly something bothered him.

Huh?

Hayate's senses went wild. Someone was rapidly becoming closer, and his feel... it wasn't like anyone else. It was darker- massive. It was a feeling that wasn't new to him yet he couldn't define or recognize just who it was. He had to keep moving.

The mysterious man sighed as he realised that he was catching up far too slowly if Hayate was to turn around and attack the samurai. And so, as he dashed through the air above the streets, moving over homes, shop fronts and monuments, Banri reached into his bag. Upon his face he placed a red mask with black eyes and small, curved horns. After a brief red glow around the edges of his face, the next time the man touched down on a roof he rocketed forward much faster than he had been before. It was a matter of moments before he had overtaken the samurai, and Hayate would be able to hear roof tiles falling as Banri closed in. The samurai had led the ninja straight to the fleeing Jounin, and it didn't seem like he had come to chat.

[Graded][Kage Test] Clandestine Practices

Post by Taiga » Fri Jan 02, 2015 5:52 pm

He sealed and channeled but this time he didn't use a technique to speed himself up. Instead, he put his efforts into the tattoos on his hands, the seals. He would need them.

Still running the sweeling feeling became far greater with every step, till finally Hayate sensed that the man chasing him was hot on his heel. Peeking back he saw the imposing figure and it's straw hat and it suddenly had all become clear to him. He was being chased by Banri. Oddly enough, his ideology was closer to Banri's now... and it was Banri's words that had started all this for him. That had got him thinking. That had got him to finally accept the truth of the reality that was before him.

He screamed, but kept up his running,

"Protect Kumo."

[Graded][Kage Test] Clandestine Practices

Bemused and a little entertained, Banri replied, "Of course." before he reached out and grabbed a roof tile that he kicked up as he ran.

It wasn't long before Banri overtook Hayate and then flipped from the rooftops on the left hand side of the street to the right. Mid-flip he hurled the roof tile backwards at the Jounin. He wanted to see what Hayate would do.

Banri was easily able to overtake him in speed. Hayate wasn't really amazed since this guy was rumoured to be stronger than the majority of Kage. After taking the lead he flipped, in some kind of aerial move, and threw a roof tile at Hayate. Instinctively Hayate did not cut his speed. Instead, an aura flickered about his body and the arm shot out to grab the tile.

Hayate had thought about smashing the building at Banri's feet, but there could be people in there. He couldn't risk injuring them, and better yet, he couldn't risk hurting Banri. There was likely a civil war coming, the daimyou's pick having killed a feudal lord, and no matter how crooked Banri was it was clear he wouldn't let Kumo get hurt during it.

Hayate kept two arms on the defensive, and to gather even more speed, used everyone of his other arms in succession to grab and fling and pull himself forward. He was going to climb or do whatever he needed to escape.

"Get to Kumo and get them ready. Whatever happens to me does't matter, a war will likely come." he yelled to Banri as he continued his escape.

"I'm going to do what I can to stop it without innocent blood being shed."

SpoilerShow
Pure Willpower
B-Rank Ninpou
Making use of a tenketsu defect and the knowledge gained from studying the Okigenma, Hayate has reached a state of mastery in pushing elementless chakra through his tenketsu, allowing him to easily expunge raw chakra from every teneketsu point on his body to form an aura of chakra. This aura is always active and drains 1 stamina from Hayate permanently, but in return he can materialize it at will. While utilizing his Ultra Powerful Aura and controlling it, Hayate is only able to use ninpou or techniques that manipulate his aura.

Ultra Powerful Aura III
A-Rank Ninpou
Prerequisite: 9 Control, Pure Willpower
Upon willing his tenketsu to manifest his Ultra Powerful Aura, Hayate's body is coated by two inches of raw chakra. This aura is stronger than the previous technique and begins to take on a more human shape. This aura's extra chakra allows Hayate to create four arms up to seven-meters in length on demand. These arms cannot perform jutsu, however Hayate can transfer techniques formed in his hands to them. This aura lasts as long as Hayate is putting chakra into it. This technique will materialize with a speed equal to the average of his Ninjutsu and Control up to a maximum of 12.

"I think you've already done enough Hayate. You started this, and I'm not convinced you can finish it without detriment to my village. So, I'm going to stop you before you tarnish our reputation further." Banri replied sternly, his tone suggesting that this was a massive inconvenience he didn't really have the time for.

Bari leapt from the roof some distance ahead from Hayate and turned to face him. Then he dashed forward, straight back for Hayate. He was going to engage in some good old physical combat. As he approached he was wary for the arms, preparing himself should they attempt to intercept.

Damn.

Banri was still the cold and shrewd little prick Hayate had pegged him for. Unfortunately, the cold and shrew little prick was easily the strongest living man from Kumogakure and Hayate was pitted against him. This made this a really bad situation... but Hayate wouldn't give up. He'd overcame all odds and beaten opponents more powerful than him before... he just had to be creative and create the proper opening. Having steeled himself he eyed up the approaching Bannin, he seemed to be on guard... because of the arms? Maybe. It was time to make yet another gamble.

The fact he was fighting Banri though was ridiculous. The both sought to protect Kumo, and with the political instability, there was no way a civil war wouldn't break out. It was just a matter of time. A rational man like Banri would see that this was a golden opportunity to squash the sentiments and trouble makers of political unrest, and from the ashes unite the people. A rat-

Yeah. Why were they fighting? He had to be more rational than this.

"You and I both know that reputation means nothing so long as our ideals and people live safe and comfortably." Hayate quickly rebutted.

The arms would all retract, but two, which would hover defensively by Hayate, swinging themselves in and aiming to grab and slam Banri to the ground as they passed by him. The move would also hopefully force Banri towards him.

"This is a prime opportunity to eliminate the struggles that would eventually, regardless, bring this country to it's knees and pose a danger to Kumogakure. It's something where I'm now in control to change the outcome of everything... and Kumo needs not see harm. They will see me as a criminal and maybe I won't be able to return home, but I can ensure that Syaoran and you and everyone in Kumo can be the victors. I can be the scapegoat- I can take the brunt of this and I can take on the pain so no one else has to endure it.

Sound familiar, Banri? Sounds like the Black Ops you birthed, the one willing to do the dark and sacrifice themselves if it means the outcome is brighter?"

Oh man, this had become an intelligence testt. And not one by some daimyou who probably scribbled penis or some stupid joke like "yes" inside a scroll. This was wagering life and death.

Banri saw the arms approaching him. He didn't know exactly how strong they were, and was entirely willing to test it. Just from observing their approach the skilled fighter could tell that they were not fast enough to catch him. At least, not in his current state. Banri danced around the first arm and then rolled beneath the second, reaching up and grabbing it from below. Then he set his feet into a low stance and strained all of his muscles to pull Hayate by the chakra arm. With a great exertion of effort he attempted to lift his opponent from the ground and over his head, dropping Hayate into the ground on the other side of him.

"Only Murakami is disloyal to the Daimyo. The rest pose no threat to the Village. Why would you jeopardize the peace of the village, it's reputation of reliability, to those other provinces? Why would you plant those doubts into the minds of the other Kyonin? Your grounds for killing all the Kyounin were wrong. But now I fear it may be our only choice to ensure total security."

Banri was still proving his excellence. His movements were deft as he dodged the arms. Hayate couldn't keep up, granted he was tired and still recovering from the day prior. The funny thing about becoming stronger was it almost seemed like his body even recovered faster... anyhow, Banri had no trouble grabbing hold of one of the arms of Hayate, who pulled him towards him, but before he could reach equilibrium, would find that he no longer had a thread to pull on.

Hayate's chakra control was strong and he had simply switched off his cloak, using the momentum to position himself to strike Banri.

"Killing all the Kyounin need not happen."

It would be clear to the Bannin that Hayate was pulling his punches and the Bannin would likely be able to sidestep his attack with ease. Hayate just wanted to keep the rhythm going and show the Bannin he had the tactical strength and planning he needed to succeed. He'd like land the attack straight into the ground, creating a massive crater and kicking up a large amount of dust.

"I was a bit hasty in my words, and I can definitely withhold judgement on the innocent Kyounin, but the Murakami are traitors and hypocrites. I was able to see that and I decided to sacrifice my own reputation and my dream, even the position of kage, to ensure the safety of Kumogakure. I will bear the weight of my village and eliminate the Murakami before war can even reach us."

Tribunal for the sins of feudal lords could wait. There was really only one group that needed to be removed from power.

Hayate would prepare himself defensively as he spoke again.

"You're a reasonable man and if you did any digging, you'd know I spent the last 26 years of my life aspiring to be Raikage. You'd also have known that I was likely the choice they were going to make. Do you think I would throw this away so easily?"
USEDShow
Infinite Spiral Sphere
A-Rank Ninpou
Following hand seals, Hayate forms a small rapidly counter-clockwise spiraling 1" sphere of chakra in his hand which quickly expands to it's full size, requiring constant contact and channeling of chakra in order to keep up it's momentum. Using this momentum, the sphere drills and grinds away at a target inflicting major damage, the majority of which is kinetically transferred inwardly causing internal damage to structures/organs before launching targets with less strength than the technique spinning through the air for at least five meters. For every point of strength difference the target is launched an additional meter. Unless it is used the technique lasts until released.
Diameter: 1'; Speed: Equal to Control, Maximum 12; Strength: Equal to Control, Maximum 12
