Senji was startled as he saw the automaton make its move. He hadn't expected it to pivot and fire so quickly. His mind raced as he internally screamed at himself to think and act all at the same time. He had to weigh whether or not he should intercept with a blast of his own, or whether it would be better to try and blast the floor out from beneath his partner, or perhaps there was a way he could shove him out of the way. The thoughts and plans ran through his mind, but they were far too slow, because he had already instinctively made his decision. Rather than sacrifice what could be his partner's life, any amount of damage to physical structures was acceptable, at least to his subconscious. His chakra was already half moulded, and he redoubled his efforts before he'd even clearly considered what he was going to do.
His body simply moved on its own, gathering chakra in intense quantities in his hand. Orange and grey flecks lanced through the usual blue, and began to overtake the normal colour. The boy magician could feel a cold burning sensation run down his outstretched arm as he shouted and fired off a multicoloured blast which quickly took the appearance of a clone. The technique sped past the other genin and met the beam some distance from him. It was entirely expected that the boy would feel the shockwave, perhaps even sustain an injury from it, but this way Senji was sure he'd survive.
After the blast was fired, Senji fell over backwards as the explosion rocked the rooftop. He had little energy left, for some reason that particular shot had fatigued him more than it should have. He looked up to check the damage he had wrought.

Senji channels chakra in a way which causes it to coat him visibly for a short while. When he is finished, an image of him as if created by the clone technique is thrown forth from his body as if he had split in two in a single direction at a speed of 6. When this image comes into contact with something, reaches 15 meters from Senji, or should Senji choose to detonate it early, this image will explode with the force of 3 explosive tags.
