Men vs Wild

[Paraf]

The ninja had been walking impatiently all over his house, with his mom constantly nagging to calm down. He'd look on the clock every once in a while. It was almost 6 PM, which was the designated time for him and his teammate meet at his house.

"I'm sure this Akio fellow is gonna appear soon, there's no reason to be nervous about" his mother, Kyoko, kept reminding him about it. It was twenty-five degrees out there, and Kaemon was dressed like it was winter. A yellow winter coat, large, toe-closed black boots and long and thick gray sweatpants, completed with a large rucksack on his back.

Kaemon would check it's contents regularly, because losing one of these could be same as losing his life. Him and his teammate have been assigned a drill, one they must take before their first mission. It is to strengthen the bond between the two. Since there is no Jounin to mentor them, they must learn how to take care of each other, and for that sake, the village is sending them on the borders of the village, on a survival quest.

They're supposed to spend 2 full days in the deep wild, just inside the borders of the village. They'll be escorted by a couple of Chuunin ninja till they reach the wild, and, if one of them returns before the 2 days run out, or if they don't return after the 2 days run out, the team will be considered disbanded, so Kaemon would need to look for a new teammate.

"This is bad!" Kaemon walked impatiently. "If he doesn't show soon, I'm sure this will be considered a failed mission!"

Once again, he'd check the contents of his rucksack, which made his, already annoyed mother, sigh and roll her eyes. It was all there, a can of baked beans, rice, a firelighter, a sleeping bag and a small steel pan, about 12 inches long, 4 across and 4 up. Kaemon supposed Akio had gotten the same bag.

Akio skipped training fir the first time ever this morning, it wasn't because he was getting lazy, it was because he had an important survival mission of sorts later that day and there was a lot riding on it. He figured he could probably do it even if he was a little tired from his training but he anted to be ready for any unexpected surprises.

Living on his own, Akio didn't didn't have any parents to nag him and he was satisfied after packing and unpacking his bag once that it was all there. The only thing he would have liked to have had was a map, but the forests weren't that big and it shouldn't be too difficult to navigate when the time came to return to the village.

The time had came and Akio was wearing his typical attire only this time he was wearing a backpack with all his gear. He was five minutes early when he knocked the door, he managed to make the knock loud without seeming intimidating to his family.

Just before Akio knocked on the window, Kaemon remembered that he was thirsty, so he ran away into the kitchen to hydrate himself. It'd be quite stupid to arrive into the survival place and die from dehydration.

"That better be him!" he yelled through the hallway, as his mother stood up and opened the door. Kyoko was a short lady in her 40s, with black, shiny hair that went down to her shoulders, and round glasses on her nose.

"Come in, my boy!" Kyoko sure didn't recognize Akio, but he looked about his age, so she figured it was his teammate.

"I'll be there in a second!" gargled Kaemon, as he was drinking water like an animal. Once he was finished, he came back into theliving room and greeted Akio with a wave.

"Are you ready?" he asked him, because a week ago the pair had a quite brutal sparring session, and Kaemon could still feel the sword cut on his abdomen and his left arm. He hoped that it would leave a scar, girls love scars.

Akio heard Kaemon yelling through the hallway and he sighed, he was five minutes early yet Kae was acting as if he was late. That guy really needs to learn that a meeting time is when you're meant to meet, arriving five minutes early doesn't make you late, it makes you early.

He was greeted by a lady in her forties, Akio presumed she was Kae's mom and he said "Hi" a simple greeting which got the job done well. He walked into the living room he heard Kaemon gargling water, he was impatient yet he was only just drinking some water? He did worry about that boy sometimes, he wondered if he would be capable of living on his own

Before long Kaemon turned up and asked if he was ready, he nodded and commented "Yep, all bruising's been dealt with and my leg's fine now" he didn't ask about Kaemon's injuries yet, just in case his mum was the sort who got worried over every scratch her little darling got, he wasn't looking down on Kyoko, it's just how most mum's are. It's one reason Akio moved out, his parents were always worrying about stuff.

"Alright, then. That's that!" Kaemon said as he stretched out a bit. "This should be fun" he was trying to make the best of it, but it's probably gonna be living hell. With a few words of advice from his mom, Kaemon kissed her goodbye and the pair left the house, where the sunshine was slowly coming down, and it should be dark in a couple of hours.

As soon as they started walking to the north of the village, Kaemon noticed two ninja in flak jackets silently walking behind them, which made him feel uneasy at first, but he felt safer with the two around, even though they will leave them once they enter the wild.

"I suppose we should first concentrate on building a shelter, and making a fire, right?" Kaemon needed his idea to be confirmed. The Chuunin ninja behind them were silent, as they didn't wanna give any directions to what they needed to do. They'd just occassionaly correct them to in what direction they should be walking.

Akio smiled at the affectionate gesture between Kae and his mom, although his parents were caring and loved the fact he was helping the villiage but his parents rarely kissed or hugged him. It didn't get to him but scenes like this always made him feel a little warm and fuzzy inside.

The pair exited the house and before long they were being followed by two chuunin, it didn't bother Akio but he did wish they would give them directions instead of just redirecting them if they went wrong. Before long Kaemon spoke and Akio thought for a second before replying "I think we should collect firewood then trek for half an hour or so until we come across another clearing then start the fire. We can take it in turns sleeping so we're not attacked. It would take too long to build any meaningful shelter" it was just his opinion, but he was fairly sure he was accurate.

Kaemon nodded at Akio's idea, but he felt he needed to explain him why he think making a shelter is crucial.

"Two days might seem like not much, but it really is. We need some sort of protection. There could be rain, and we always need to have dry wood and keep ourselves dry. Also, in case some wild animals attack while we sleep, I think it's best we build something that's not right on the ground." he explained, as he looked at the skies. It was, as usual, foggy as ever, so there was no way to tell how the actual weather is outside this foggy layer.

Akio reluctantly nodded and said "We don't have any real means to make something that's off the ground but we should be able to make a small tent of sorts with leaves and sticks. We should sleep in turn, you can borrow my katana when you're on guard, break it and I break you. It will be good if a lone animal does attack us, we can use it as meat if it appears to be healthy and we cook it thoroughly, it will give us more energy in the day" rice and beans is good for keeping you alive, but it doesn't exactly fill you with energy, anyway, since when did he become a vegetarian? A day without meat would be quite weird for Akio.

Kaemon couldn't help but smile on how Akio was protective of his katana, which immediately made him remember their fight, where he'd pretty much be screwed if it wasn't for the sword. Kaemon was still curious about it, so he figured he'd have plenty of time to ask him about it once they were in the wild.

As they slowly approached an area where there were no more roads, but mud surrounded by dense vegetation, Kaemon noticed that the two Chuunins, wordlessly had stopped behind them.

"I guess this is it" he said, looking and Akio, and then slowing down his walk to make sure they didn't lost themselves. It was the first time he was in this part of Kirigakure, and the fact that it was almost night-time by now didn't help the cause.

Akio carried on walking in silence until they approached the area in question, it looked like a typical forest although he had ever been in this area before. He looked around and spotted a few trees and he instantly started to climb it, although his technique looked smooth and practised, it was the first time he'd climbed a tree so he was playing it by ear.

He climbed up until he was around thirty five foot off the air and he drew his katana. He took a few steady breaths before performing a backflip, slicing through the branch using both his momentum and his weight sending the branch flying to the ground. He wasn't done yet though, he jumped from branch to branch, cutting around half of them down, he didn't want to kill the tree but he wanted to collect firewood, in total there was around twenty branches, quite large at that so they could be cut in half, or even in three in some cases.

Akio came to a safe landing and sheathed his katana before looking at his handy work, he looked around and spotted some plants he remembered seeing in a book. Apparently they made decent rope and he pointed towards them, saying "Cut them down at the base, we can use them as a rope to bind this together, we can use leaves for covering later" he didn't intend to, but he had taken charge.

After they were deep inside the wilderness, Akio climbed the tree and started cutting some branches. He definitely did look like he knew what he was doing. As he started cutting, Kae couldn't see him because of all the fog, but he did see all the branches falling on the ground.

As he came down, he instructed him to cut these plants in order to make a rope. Kae was happy to have someone to listen to, so he gave him a nod.

"Leave it to me" he said firmly, as he approached the plants and crouched. Takinga kunai out of his pouch, he patiently started cutting these plants, hoping that they're not poisonous or anything.

"How come you know these things?" he asked while collecting the plants into his arm. By the time Akio would answer, Kae would already collected enough.

Akio started searching through the branches, the tent needed to be big enough for two people, but they wouldn't have time to build a large tent. Akio figured they would be in sleeping bags and sleeping next to each other would help keep them warm.

Kaemon asked a question and he answered almost right away "I'm the first ninja ever in my family, even going back ten generations. I could only get a place in the lowest academy, if I failed I would never become a ninja. I've mesmerised almost every textbook, including survival skills" as he finished speaking he started thrusting branches into the ground, they crossed around 1.2 meter off the ground and rose above around 5cm. There were 12 of these spread out evenly over 5ft, there was around 4ft inbetween them

Akio realised he would need some more branches so he started to climb another tree, he did the same thing he did last time, this time gathering twenty two branches. He turned his head to Kaemon and spoke clearly "Can you start stripping the stems of the plants please, use a kunai, it should be easy but be careful, you will need to use a fair bit of force so don't cut your hand" he placed three more pairs of sticks in the ground, and one single stick at the end, touching the final triangle. He was satisfied with the basic structure before holding one stick above half of the triangles and spoke once again "Once you've done that I need you to make a rope using three strands, then use it to tie the triangles together with this stick, I presume you remember your basic knots" he was impressed with how easily he'd taken to leading the pair.

After his teammate had instructed him to, Kae nodded and proceeded to strip the stems. The force bit wasn't a problem, he had a fair bit of concentrated strength in both his arms and hands, so the job was over in about five minutes. He took the 3 stems and started tying them together, to form a firm rope.

Nodding once again when Akio asked him to tie the triangles to the stick, Kae quickly got up and took the previously formed rope, and started tying the stick to the formed triangle. He was fairly impressed how quickly Akio thought of a construction, which was small, but still pretty smart. It would at least, keep them dry.

Once he was finished, he looked up to the sky, which was now almost completely dark.

"We need to hurry up. What do you suppose we should use to cover it?" he asked, hoping that Akio had a solution for this one as well.

Akio held the stick firm as Kaemon did his thing before holding up a second stick, gesturing for him to tie that one down as well. When asked about how to cover it he pointed around towards various plants with large leaves and said "We can use leaves, they're naturally waterproof and we'll need about twenty or so of them. If you collect them I'll tie some sticks to the sides so you have somewhere to attack them" if that was okay with Kaemon, he would take over tying duties , it shouldn't be long until the tent was complete.

As Kaemon steadily tied both the sticks to their construction, Akio told him about the leaves that they should use as a roof, which Kaemon, normally, accepted as his duty.

He quickly climbed the rough surface of a nearby palm tree, and with swift moves of his sharp kunai, he quickly cut of a few large leaves that came down on their own. Jumping from the relatively high tree, he figured they'd need more, but he was too afraid to further cut the palm tree, because that wouldn't be too nice of them.

His hands were tingling, but he soon climbed another, and a few more palm tree leaves came down. By the time he collected 20 of these large leaves, the sky was completely dark, it has been officially night, and his hands were all red from the scratches and cuts.

Akio set to work quickly tying the leaves to the framework and before long their new temporary home was complete, now came the awkward part. They each had one pair of clothes, and they would be in them for two days and they'd probably be mobile the whole time. This combined with what would be humid conditions would lead to great discomfort if they wore them constantly throughout the two days.

Now came the awkward part, who was going to sleep first? He figured there was one way to find out and he dramatically stated "We arm wrestle like men, winner sleeps for the first two hours!" but first he had something to do.

Akio would start breaking up the sticks and pulling them together before using his fire lighter to start a reasonably sized fire that was 1.5 meters from the tend, close enough to keep them warm, and far enough away so it won't set it ablaze if the wind blows.

Onced that was done Akio found a nearby tree stub, 10 seconds walk away and placed his elbow down with his arm out, ready for a challenge, he wasn't going to take no for an answer.

Kae did wonder for a bit on how they'd sleep wand who'd take the guard first. However, it was fairly early to go to sleep yet, it'd be pointless because Kaemon had at least another 3 hours of energy inside of him. It made him smile at how competitive Akio was, and how much it meant to him. He wanted to armwrestle, which Kaemon sucked at. He knew he was going to lose, pretty much, but he still went with it. Before they did, Akio started a fire, because it was getting fairly chilly, which Kaemon wanted to help with, but didn't know how. He was still glad that there was fire.

As he approached the tree stub, he first thought of letting him win, because he didn't want to sleep yet. However, it would still be fun. As far as spars go, they're 1:1, so Kaemon was really curious about it.

He seated himself and got a good grip over Akio's arm, and immediately counted them down, and started to use all his strength into bringing his hand down.

Akio smiled confidently, he was fairly confident in his arm wrestling ability. He kept his upper arm close to him, his strong leg forwards, his abdomen close to the large stump, he even managed to get a high grip on Kaemon's hand and curl his thumb. As the countdown started, Akio had a confident grin, seeing their arms so close he realised his muscles were quite a bit bigger, he figured he had an inch or two on him bicep wise and his lower arm was a bit bigger as well.

As soon as Kaemon finished counting down he started pushing against the arm with all his strength, if he managed to gain some ground, he would start pulling the arm towards him slightly, making it a lot harder for Kaemon to regain ground he loses.

Kaemon saw that he didn't stand the chance against his teammate. Akio didn't seem to be much stronger than him, but he did seem like he got more of a technique, and it was fairly easy for him to beat him. Slowly, but steadily, Kaemon's sweaty hand went down on the log and he sighed.

"There you go" he nodded at him as he stood up and took a walk around the place.

On either way he'd turn to, all he'd see is a different types of vegetation. He couldn't see long distances, because of the creepy fog that's getting thicker and thicker. The only thing that was vividly clear were the mountains, that had their own layers of fog, and looked fairly exciting.

"I suppose we should get some rest first, and then go ahead and explore this place a little bit" Kaemon said, as he seated himself on the tree stub.

Akio couldn't heko but jump up, thrusting his arms in the air and shouting "Champion! Oh yeh, who's badass? Yep, that's me" he was totally in love with himself at the moment and couldn't help but flex his right bicep and give it a stroke saying "Good boy, you made daddy proud" he was so very proud of his muscles because it took so much work to get them.

After he was done flattering himself he joined Kaemon on the stump, he spoke in a much more sedate manner compared to earlier "I'm not quite ready to sleep so they could take shifts later" he thought for a second before figuring they might as well have a team bonding chat "So Kae, what do you think about me? I figure it's best if we know exactly what we think about one and other, good, bad and all. I think you're a great guy, kind, fairly strong and you're reliable. Now the bad, you're a little soft, you need to learn to stick up for yourself more. You're also a bit of a girl when it comes to pain, we can of take about the same amount of punishment but you're too quick to scream and shout. Learn to keep your mouth shut, tell yourself it doesn't hurt even if the pain is unbelievable. If a real enemy hears you screaming like that, they know they've got you and they will lay into you, much more than I ever have. You know in our last spar? If I didn't like you much I could easily have mounted you when you fell down and punched your teeth down your throat, could have broken your nose as well. How would I know it's safe to do that? Because you screamed and yelled, if you were silent I would have been wary. Not everybody is as nice as me" he hoped he didn't make his team mate depressed, but he felt it needed to be said.

As Akio seated himself next to him, Kaemon hoped that it wouldn't awkward. Luckily, Akio started to talk, which made Kaemon feel a bit relieved, but he got even more worried when Akio asked him what he thought of him.

He listened to his critics and nodded, indeed, he was a girl sometimes, a ninja screaming is ridiculous.

"I think you're a good leader... you know what you're doing" he confirmed, not knowing what more to say about him. "You're also quite strong for your age. Even though age doesn't really matter that much in this society" he said.

Akio was pleased to see his mate wasn't too depressed by what was said. He was also quite flattered about his own feedback, it was nice to know his hard work gave the impression that he knew what he was doing, which he kinda did for the most part. He wsa a bit disappointed though and he gave Kaemon a gentle nudge and said "You're too nice sometimes you know that, but only telling me the good is going to do harm in the long run. I need to know the bad you see in me. If you don't tell me the bad you see in me, I will put you in a rear naked choke until you do" he wasn't joking either, the tone in his voice made it clear without seeming hostile.

As Akio insisted on Kaemon telling him something negative about him, Kae gently giggled before saying:

"You do tend to get a little bit too violent" of course, he wasn't too serious about this. He knew that it was all fun, and was ultimately a good characteristic if he's getting violent for a good cause.

Since hours have passed since he left his house, Kaemon felt his stomach crawling, so he went ahead and replaced his rucksack on his front, opening it and drawing out a can of baked beans.

"I suppose we should go ahead and hunt something tomorrow?" he asked, knowing that he'll get tired of beans and rice pretty quickly. Besides, he needed protein and meat, a ninja of his pace wouldn't be satisfied with only these types of foods.

Akio wasn't entirely satisfied by the single negative comment but it was true, he did like getting into punch ups and whatnot. He noticed Kaemon going for his rice and beans. It gave Akio an idea so he decided to say it out loud "Well, we could leave a few beans not too far from a fire, if the person on guard is perfectly still a small animal might come along to eat it. We can always kill and skin a rabbit or something. Oh, and can you get mine out please, I just want some rice for now" it wasn't the best plan but it would get them some food for little effort.

[Paraf]

Kaemon really craved something at the moment, but Akio's idea was pretty good, it was their best shot for getting some meat this night. He took out the rice bag from his bag and gave it to his teammate, while he bended over the can and took a few sips of the beans, closing it with a loud burp. As he closed it, he figured that they'll have some left for hunting and some for backup, but for now, he was pretty much set.

"Sure thing, I'll be well prepared. If you want, you can go get some sleep now" he said, as the time was slipping away.

Akio accepted the bag of rice and took a few bites, he knew he was going to sleep first and he could sleep on a full stomach. He nodded when Kaemon spoke and said "Thanks, wake me up in two hours mate" he walked off towards hisbag and stripped down to his boxers before slipping in his sleeping bag, then hopping into the tent. He didn't want to stay in the sam2 clothes for two days straught in humid conditions so this made sense in his mind.

As his friend went over to have a nap, Kaemon didn't really have any other choice but to admire the nature around him. For someone else, perhaps, it would be frightening to be in these forests at night, but since he was a ninja, this type of thing was completely natural to him. Wild beasts? As long as he had his kunai, he was the predator. Besides, his teammate was here, and he was sure he'd jump in to fight a bear in a blink of an eye. He had his fire, his beans, and the sounds of the nature to keep him relaxed. Even though, he couldn't help but wonder how it'd be way nicer without the mist that was even lower this time.

He couldn't tell time without a watch, so he figured he'd let Akio sleep for a while, let the guy have his rest. As long as he wasn't tired, there wasn't a need to wake him up.

As time passed by, Kaemon would eventually go work a walk, a bit deeper in the wilderness, but, paranoid that he'd get lost, he would walk back every time he didn't notice the fire behind him. He wasn't bored, but it would be nicer if he had someone to talk with. When he estimated that about two hours passed, he went back, put a small pile of branches on the fire, and gently tried to woke his teammate up.

Akio was having a very nice sleep, it was surprising how comfy sleeping in your boxers in a sleeping bag in a stick tent covered in leaves, especially with a roaring fire a few meters away from him. Waking up wasn't a bad experience either, he popped his head up and slipped out of the sleeping bag, yawning loudly before saying [color=#dodgerblue]"Thanks mate, did anything take the bait?"[/color] without paticularly listening to the answer as he slipped out of the sleeping bag and slipped on his sandals before pulling on a shirt.

The fire was near by so he couldn't be bothered to pull on his shorts when he would just have to take them off in two hours, not like he was exposed or anything. He did however, pull a kunai out of his short leg pouch. He gestured for Kaemon to take the tent as he sat on the treestub perfectly still, only saying "Sleep well Kae" he would sit there perfectly still for twenty minutes before a fat rabbit came across the camp, it looked around and but thankfully didn't see Akio before it was too late. The rabbit was very close and it was simple enough to throw a kunai at it's head, killing it instantly.

Not even a squeek could be heard as the rabbit ceased to live. Akio didn't feel bad and set straight to work, he found a few left over sticks and used his kunai to sharpen the edge, so they could act as a skewer of sorts. He then moved onto the rabbit, skinning and cutting it up. Once he was done with the preperation he speared the meat and stuck it on the fire.

After a while the meat was ready and it was around two hours so Akio tried to wake Kaemon up by poking him with the blunt end of the stick and said "Wake up, we've got rabbit to eat, it's good" to prove it was nice he took a bite of his own stick, the meat was nice but it wasn't amazing.

As Akio woke up, Kaemon was sorry to say that nothing caught the bait, but Akio didn't seem to mind. They exchanged a few words, but Kaemon couldn't stick any longer because the tiredness was really getting the best out of him. He wasn't usually like this, but the next 2 hours were gonna be paradise for him. He crawled inside the sleeping bag, which already felt worm, which was sort of unpleasant, but pleasant at the same time. It was actually rather comfy and it had him thinking he was home already, which made him fall asleep in a matter of minutes.

The next time he'd opened his eyes, he heard Akio yelling he caught something. It instantly made him smile. As he crawled out of his sleeping bag and outside their construction, he saw the already done rabbit meat. "Good job, Akio!" he said happily, as he sat down next to him and started to eat his share. It was about 3 am, but now that they had food, Kaemon wasn't at all that worried.

Akio looked over at Kaemon, he was a little concerned at how easily pleased he was but he guessed he would just have to be creative in the excuses he made if he was ever invited around for food. To be excited about cooked rabbit with no seasoning, Akio figured his usual food must have been pretty bad in comparison.

They ate in silence for about a minute and it was just a little too awkward for Akio's tastes so he decided to try and ease the awkwardness "So, back at my apartment when we first met. You said there was nothing you liked in the magazine, I don't think you're gay. I mean, don't get me wrong, if you are it's fine and I'll support you. But I think it's more you have better stuff hidden somewhere, think you can lend me some once all this is over?" Well, at least he intended to reduce the awkwardness, though he probably made it worse given the topic he chose to bring up.

As Kaemon started to eat the rabbit meat in silence, he was pleased with how good it actually tasted. The fact that they were in the middle of nowhere, and the feeling that they were able to survive anywhere the world puts them in, was seasoning enough for him. As Akio asked him a question about his sexuality, Kaemon giggled a bit.

"I'm not gay, but I can't say I'm straight either. I like girls, if that's what you're asking, but I've never been able to show my affection for them, since none of them showed any affection towards me. It's just that, my mom always taught me that magazines like that are disrespectful, so I try and stay away from them as much as I can.

Akio was intrigued by the answer and tried to put his friend in a headlock, rough but friendly nevertheless. He started speaking almost straight away "Ya goof, you're meant to make the first move on a girl, it's how things work. Besides, if you stay away from them why did you have a look at mine? I mean, yeh, they are a little disrespectful but girls have magazines like that with guys in as well, they're way worse" he was taking an educated guess as he'd heard many girls in the village talking about their pinups.

[Paraf]

Kaemon wasn't at all surprised by Akio's headlock, it just became customary, something that came along with Akio, and Kae thought of it as a sign of friendship. He couldn't but giggle.

"Well, I guess I'm not that into girls as much as I am in training. I think I was just raised that way. And well, I'm still a curious kid" he laughed again when he remembered seeing the girls in Akio's magazine.

Akio released the headlock and laughed with what Kaemon said and quickly replied "You know you are a complete goof don't you? You use the magazines to help you rest so you can train harder the next day" he brought his right hand up and rested it against his head as he shook his head in mock disapproval.

He then placed a supportive arm around Kaemon's shoulders, giving the arm furthest from him a good pat as he spoke in a supportive voice "Don't worry mate, when next month's issue comes through I'll sneak you one of my old ones if you're curious. Might even send you two if you're lucky" whilst he was joking, he did ctually intend to do it.

As Kaemon laughed to Akio's last sentence, he finished his rabbit meat and let out a small burp after it.

"Thanks for this, Akio. I'm feeling great now!" he nodded to him with a friendly smile. He stood up and stretched a bit, like he did every time he was finished with dinner.
