I can't quite remember if we explained this properly in the cbox, but since the thread is here let me try again - although i'm not certain I understand what you mean. I think there might be a misinterpretation of the rules afoot! You'll probably know most of the below already, but for the sake of clarity and just in case that's the problem, bear with me -
** This is, however, a little outdated. The diagram explains that "You are allowed to have the pyramid base start at B-rank if you have 10 each of D and C rank" -- Since January of this year that's now 5 of each rank instead of 10. It sounds like someone has explained this badly when they've spoken to you, and told you that you need 5D's to get even a single C?
So -- with that understood, you can learn that C-rank without knowing all five of the D-rank archives. You could learn two D's, get that C, then get the other D-rank that requires the C.
But wait, there's more!
Because of how we generally add jutsu to our characters, you can usually just train (or buy) the pre-requisite and the desired jutsu at the same time; you don't need to already have the pre-req. jutsu accepted onto your char in order to get the other, so long as you then add them at the same time.
If Henrin Jim doesn't know any of the clan jutsu, he can just spend 7points (or do 3 trainings) and add that D-rank, it's C-rank prereq., and one other D rank (to satisfy the pyramid) all in one character modification.
... Uh, this was probably another awful explanation actually, but did it help at all?
Quote:The pyramid system isn't just about 5's; it simply means that you need one more of a lower rank jutsu in order to learn a higher. If you want 1 C, the pyramid means you also need 2 D's. If you want 3 C's, you need 4 D's. There's a nice infographic about this here**.I had it explained to me how the jutsu pyramid works with needing 5 D for C, and 5 C for B.

This is an image/diagram often used to show how our pyramids work, if it helps as well.
