Ashes of Eden

phpBB [video] Within the metaphysical expanse, Yasu and Konegu set upon the haphazard path amongst the stars. Were the stakes not so daunting, one might even call the spectacle beautiful. From this distance, while Yasu couldn't see the entire path before her, a large portion of it was visible. The solid earth before them broke up into small floating rocks that made a sort of cobblestone path in the void. While there was a large platform ahead, further in the distance was what could only be described as a valley in space, a massive asteroid gouged with a rift between two peaks. Further on, she could spy what appeared to be a spiral of some sort, but nothing beyond that.

Comets streaked through the infinite black, and even the rocks upon which they would soon jump seemed to be drifting just slightly, almost as if they would float into oblivion if they were touched. Despite this, Yasu maintained some sense of gravity, though no doubt she would feel any sudden change in her inertia. Considering her experience with inner worlds like this, she might even be able to control it. As she reached the first floating rock and kicked off of it, Yasu and Konegu might not be surprised to see that the rock itself would float away, never to return. It meant that when they moved, they would have to be certain of where they were going. Any sort of misstep could prove disastrous to their cause.

The first platform was flat and large, and it lay only a few hopscotches ahead. It was devoid of features, which made it both innocuous and suspicious at once. Beyond it was a much longer path to the large valley asteroid, the rocks between seeming to not even quite reach the valley itself. Yasu and Konegu would find that with each step off of the rocks, hushed echoing whispers would resonate throughout the rift in which they walked, seeming to dull the sounds of Yasu's footsteps. The whispers would cease when she reached the platform, but the most unsettling thing for the pair would be one simple fact: no matter how empty the space around them seemed to be...

...They couldn't shake the feeling they were being watched.

"We can leave this place. There's no reason to continue forward. I can pull us out of this place, put us back in reality."

Yasu turned her head and looked up at the man beside her. She might have mistaken him for an actual person if she couldn't see the red hues flowing off of him, the tattoos on the side of his head stained red and glowing, and the glowing red eyes that fixed upon her. She shook her head at him. "Ookuri is lost in here somewhere, I know he is. I'm not leaving without him. I have to help. If you leave, you go without me."

Konegu sighed so heavily he growled under his breath, turning his eyes forward upon everything on the path in front of them. He shook his head and looked at Yasu disapprovingly. "I can't protect you if I leave you, so fine. But if you get even a scratch, I am yanking you out of here whether you like it or not."

Yasu glared at him. "You don't have that kind of hold on me." she snapped.

"Try me." Konegu replied, matching her glare with one of his own. The two stared each other down for several minutes before he broke his gaze away and dropped to a knee. "Get on my back. This will be easier if we move as one."

Yasu wrinkled up her nose at him, she clearly didn't trust him, but she also knew he wasn't wrong. After a moment of hesitation she climbed onto his back and he held her under her knees as she wrapped her arms around his neck and rest her chin on his shoulder. "A piggyback ride...? How embarrassing..."

Konegu snorted in a laugh, but began their journey. One small jump at a time he made his way from one rock to the next with Yasu on his back.

Konegu would find the physics of this inner world strange but understandable enough. The rocks seemed to be held by some weak gravity well, and though they were enough to kick off of to leap and float from one part of the path to the next, the force of pushing off would send the rocks slowly floating off into the endless void of space, never to return. Each decision had to be deliberate. There would be no turning back.

Konegu would reach the large platform without incident, but the nagging sensation of being under constant observation was even more prominent the moment they set foot on the solid terrain. Thankfully, this platform’s gravity was more stable and only slightly flexed underfoot.

As the pair made their way, Konegu’s footsteps echoing softly against the dusty surface of this asteroid, the pair might catch the subtle darkening of shadows at the end of their fields of vision. When they turned, they would see nothing, but neither one of them were fools. Something was there.

From inky black shadows behind them, three dark apparitions standing just shy of six-foot high emerged, glowing yellow eyes locking into them. They were of an inky bluish-black hue, large clawed hands and long trailing antennae crowning their heads. It was when these creatures began running toward the pair that the sounds of their footfalls would be too loud to hide. The ominous aura these creatures have off, however, would more than likely give away their presence before the pair even set eyes upon them.

Konegu grimaced as the apparitions came into view, and he slid Yasu off his back who gave him a confused look. "I tried to warn you. I can only do so much here, it isn't my realm. Most I can do is yank you out... but fighting? That's on you, child." he sneered, glaring at her in anger that she dared force him into a situation that left him feeling so useless. A powerful genma hardly appreciated such a feeling after all.

Yasu rolled her eyes and fixed them on the newcomers, her mind running over several ideas on just what she could do. "Fine. I'm not helpless after all." she retorted, hardly feeling as sure of herself as she tried to put off in her words. A red glow seemed to take it's place on her, extending over her into an armor as she grinned at the oncoming opponents. She stood ready, drawing one of her whips into her head and readying herself. She was fully prepared to dodge incoming attacks, even beginning by striking out with her whip to try and get a hold of the antenna of one of her enemies and yank it forward in the hopes of slamming his face into the ground of the asteroid.

phpBB [video] The three creatures were quick, though perhaps not as quick as Yasu’s whip. The creatures managed to dance around her wider strikes with the whip, but the one she sought to catch by the antennae would not escape. With a rough pull, the creature’s head would be slammed into the unforgiving stone, the creature turning into a splattered inky mass before disappearing, particles of deep purple light floating up from their desiccated remains. The other two creatures took note.

Though they had no mouths, they emitted a disturbing clicking sound, and their antennae twitched as one of them seemed to sink into the ground, disappearing. The other rushed forward and swiped its claws at Yasu. This was no normal strike; though it was difficult to see, the inky black arm seemed to stretch as it swung, and the seemingly soft claws immediately solidified, light refracting off of them like a steel blade. It would continue to rush forward and swipe, though Yasu could gradually outpace it if she kept moving.

If there was one thing Yasu had become quite adept at, it was evasion and constant momentum. The girl moved quickly, dodging under strikes and shifting to the side to avoid claws. Even Konegu stood a few paces behind her and watched with what appeared to be almost a proud look on his face. "I suppose this is the advantage of training with your one-day-murderer." he muttered. "This is nothing compared to his wires and fuma-shuriken." he added as he observed her.

Yasu herself did not respond to him, not even allowing his statements to enter her mind and thought for the moment. Her thoughts remained on the fight. As she spun away from another strike she lashed out with her whip again, this time aiming to catch her opponent around his apparent waist and yank him away. Her goal was that the momentum she added to him might send him straight off the asteroid on which they fought. The girl was grinning through the fight, almost as if this was entirely fun for her.

Ashes of Eden

The girl's strategy was clever, though she seemed to still be just a tad too far from the edge of the platform for this tactic to be effective. With but a few meters to spare, the creature she threw was able to anchor itself, lashing out with one of its abnormally stretchy limbs and gouging its steel claws into the rock of the platform itself. The creature emitted a shrill shriek as it pulled itself back to the platform and once again lumbered toward Yasu, faster than before if only by a small margin. It was a curious noise. Was this frustration?

Yasu would find the answer to that question soon. As Yasu threw the attacking shadow being, the second creature, which had all but vanished, approached rapidly from behind as a literal circle of darkness on the ground from behind Yasu, much faster than his materialized partner. Konegu might see it, but only too late. Yasu would feel her feet and ankles alone sink into the ground, almost as if pinned down by sludge. She would be able to pull herself free, but it would require some immediate effort. The pool of dark sludge soon spawned two malevolent, glowing eyes, also shrieking at the girl in its clutches.

The first creature's hands expanded in preparation for the strike, seeming to grow even larger than before. It was clear that these creatures, despite their feral appearance, had the capacity for intelligence and strategy. It seemed that this would not be as easy as initially hoped. With her mobility temporarily hampered, how would Yasu respond?
