Shinjiro had never been to Aroma Country before, formerly known as Oasis. It had long been a trading hub and closely aligned with Konoha and Suna. However, when their forces joined their allies in attacking Iwagakure their military was decimated and they were left vulnerable to a Kirigakure invasion, defended only by scrambling Wind country Samurai. At the time Shinji was occupied elsewhere, leading the conquest of Starfall island and then later being deployed to singlehandedly assure the surrender of the Holy City of Towers by taking their priestess hostage after their forces too were decimated in the failed attack against Iwagakure.

The war had been good for the young Bannin, promoted shortly after the initial skirmishes in Soul Country, the teenager at the time had been instrumental to many key victories for Kirigakure. He had even managed to get involved at the tail end of some of the battles against Tea Country and then join the invasion of Fire Country which ultimately brought an end to the war, securing their victory. By now, he was a decorated war hero; elevated to the status of a legend beyond his already notable fame. At only 20 years old now, that was quite the feat but then Shinji had always excelled quickly and from an extraordinarily young age. Still, there were others that made a name for themselves even younger, Mistaki Shio for instance. A boy at least five years his junior that at the age of 10 had managed to hold his own admirably when he fought him in the Star Country tournament. And to think that was in a bout playing to Shinji’s strengths, not even taking into account the boy’s prodigious talents in Genjutsu. Shinji often wondered what became of the boy, he had heard he had went rogue and coerced others into following him, carving out some degree of power for himself in the chaos of the war. So too did Shinji hear rumors that his former mentor Kaguya Aimi had been active in the fighting, though it seemed he followed his own agenda, and it was unclear where his relationship with Kirigakure stood. Uncharacteristically, it had the young man worried to some extent. Normally he would feel nothing at eliminating traitors though if Aimi did in fact sever his ties, that thought filled him with bitterness and anger.

The Bannin of the Mist wondered idly if there would be any outstanding talents in these Chunin exams. It was entirely possible he would end up killing some of these up-and-coming shinobi, regardless of which village they currently served. Naturally, it was the Kirigakure Genin that held the most interest to him, their nations shinobi always became the most powerful and similarly the most likely to eventually prove dangerous to their own village. He had come to the tournament on a whim; as a three time champion of international tournaments he was no stranger these sorts of gatherings though he wasn’t interested in participating in a simple exhibition match or playing around with children. As he leaned over the balcony rails as the introductions for the bout began it occurred to him that the name Ico seemed familiar. “That’s not that brat Chisaki adopted is it?” he muttered to himself. His girlfriend was always taking in strays, she was rather empathetic towards misfits and orphan children like herself. It wasn’t something Shinji cared enough to be involved with, he was no father and never intended to be. In fact, Chisaki not being able to biologically have children was one of the things that he found appealing about her, at least any strays she picked up wouldn’t be his.

Shinji’s vibrant green eyes assessed the young boy, he was quite small. As young as Shinji had been when he graduated the academy and yet this kid was already undertaking a Chunin exam, it was possible he dove right in straight out of the academy. Bold, but an excellent opportunity to rise through the ranks quickly. With the change in the graduation exam before the war, it meant both of these Kiri Genin had already been forced to kill. Time would tell if that did in fact produce a stronger generation or at least better wean out the weak. ‘That sword…quite the unorthodox weapon’ he considered, though the size of it intrigued him. He knew there had been famed prior members of the seven who utilized massive swords to deadly effect. It stirred up a sense of hopefulness that this kid would have some potential, the Seven Swordsmen were severely lacking in proper talent and reputation. There was no doubt Shinjiro was the strongest active member, then there were the two Hitachi’s: A Kaguya and a Tsukino. The fourth and newest member was Shinji’s own apprentice who he honed throughout the early years of the war before the two were utilized separately. Karugata was a solid Jounin now and had yet some untapped potential but he wasn’t sure that she would ever become a true legend. There were other daggers in the seven, but they too seemed to lack something that would really make them stand out. The swordsmen after all were not just about talent but about reputation, instilling fear through signature and unorthodox weapons and styles. Perhaps Chisaki had found someone of worth after all.

This chunnin exam was now a chance to broker peace between the nations, different village shinobi of all kinds, enemies that fought against each other we’re now here together in peace or as much peace as could occur while children trained for war battled each other for their entertainment. The famed Bannin of Konohagakure was not happy with how the war had gone down and he wished he had been closer to home while Kirigakure made it's invasion on the fire country, but during the early stages he was imprisoned and for the latter stages he was leading the Dragon Country take over with the rest of Anbu Black Ops. If he hadn’t of being stationed so far perhaps he could of stopped Kirigakure’s dominance during the war. But alas it was done and there was very little he could do much now.

Though he of course had some cogs in motion at least to keep eyes on Kirigakure and one was in front of him as he sat idly in the stands, one leg crossed over the other and his arm casually sprawled across the back of the seat next to him.

He didn’t want to seem to interested in the battle in front of him or at least no more than anyone else, nobody need know how invested he was in the boy Ico and how he had developed. He wasn’t surprised to see the boy here, but to join the chuunin exams straight out of the academy was a brave and bold move. Yoru was impressed.

Soon the bout would begin, it was only a matter of moments.

Though Yoru’s gaze fell to the side, distracted for a moment by a familiar face that of Shinji a man he’d met a long time ago, even before the war and Yoru had lost his way and he wasn’t fighting on the side of Konoha but fighting against along side shinobi from Kirigakure and one he fought with was saw just a few rows over. Though their encounter was brief and Shinji, didn’t even know it was Yoru who was the masked mercenary known as Daremo.

He slowly stood up from his chair and slowly and methodically moved through the seats towards where Shinji sat, and looked at the empty seat next to him “Is this seat taken?” he voice rang out softly, almost rhythmically in tone.

Shinjiro was aware there were many powerful individuals in the stands here today. Scanning around he noted a few notable individuals from each of the great nations. It had only been a few months ago that he had fought against Konoha forces and slaughtered Tea Country samurai trying to rally together to support their allies. And now here he was, celebrating the land Tea was given to keep their border with Fire Country. How many of their ships had been sunk as they attempted to sail back across the channel from Shark country after they had retreated when their lands fell under attack? He couldn’t say for certain, but he knew every citizen of that land must be bitter to be driven from their homes to have to rebuild in two separate abandoned nations. No victory had been won in Whirlpool reclaiming Oasis from Kiri, it had been abandoned as they rallied forces for their final attack.

When a man with an impressive aura approached him, Shinjiro got the impression he was someone from one of the lusher countries. He seemed to have a soft effeminate look to him, yet his instincts told him this man was a skilled killer. A tea country samurai or Konoha shinobi if he were to guess. When asked if he could sit Shinji simply gestured with his hand, barely looking at the man. Hs hood was down for once though his mask remained pulled over his mouth. Shinji’s medium-length honey brown hair rustled lightly in the gentle ocean breeze. The smell of salt on the air was comforting and familiar, even in contrast to the arid afternoon heat and direct sun that would be the bane of most Kiri shinobi. Shinjiro however was quite well travelled and had been able to adjust to various climates, including even the snowy and frigid lands of earth country.

He continued to watch ahead, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees, as it was a more comfortable position given the swords across his back. That was his own unorthodox style and signature as a member of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. It had taken incredible skill in order to draw as effectively from such absurd positioning and angles opposed to the traditional hip draw, but it made him an incredibly difficult opponent for most traditional samurai as every strike came at them differently than what they tended to train against. “So, how many of your friends did I kill?” he wondered idly. He assumed there was likely some hostility despite the politeness, he knew subterfuge and alternative motives when he saw it. He was an assassin before becoming a member of the seven after all. He noted the man didn’t carry a katana, that lowered the likelihood of him being a samurai of Tea. “Do you think it's ironic that I killed so many Tea samurai with their own style?” he wondered, gauging the man for reactions. He would rather provoke him and get to the truth of his feelings than dance around, pretending like they were friends.

The red haired Bannin smiled and nodded politely as the man gestured to the seat, it seemed as though he barely took note of Yoru at all and seemed solely focused on the bout that was about to begin in the arena. He adjusted his green haori and took a seat next to the man known as Shinji. It was apparent by his demeanour he didn’t know who he was and why would he? Yoru when they last mat was simply a masked mercenary hired by Iwagakure and had the alias of Daremo. It had been a long time ago at least half a decade since they had fought alongside one another and nor did they meet on the battlefield of The Great War. So once again, it was no surprise.

A few moments of silence passed, it was abruptly broken by Shinji speaking very strangely, asking a peculiar set of questions and Yoru had no answer nor did he know what he was talking about. Though he had learnt that Shinji was very capable with the Iadio style, or at least that’s what he seemed to suggest.

Yoru let the silence sit for a little longer, and nodded “I guess it would be ironic if you did kill a friend of mine with their own technique sure, I’ve had run in with people from the land of tea but I wouldn’t say I know any on a personal level.” Mused Yoru with a simply shrug, followed by a soft chuckle “You are strange one Shinji of Kirigakure.” he slowly lingered across the man’s name, making it clear he knew exactly who he was.

His single hazel eye peered onto the battlefield as the klaxon rang out across the arena and into the stands, the small boy known as Ico wasted no time running across the arena with incredible speed. Yoru was curious at the strike, it was apparent his training had gone out of whack, what were this Kiri shinobi teaching him? Striking without thinking? Least he'd catch his opponent by surprise.

Shinjiro hummed lowly in thought, watching as the other Genin manifested a black substance and molded it into a weapon. ‘That technique, I’ve seen it before’ he noted, ‘What was that kids name?’, the talented one he met in Star country and whose jutsu proved instrumental in Soul. Shinji tended to focus on one mission at a time, learning all relevant details and memorizing them but discarding them when no longer relevant. When it came to people, especially comrades that were so fleeting and expendable it was rare for anyone to make enough of an impression to be remembered for more than a few years. Whatever the case, he did recall that the individual was an experiment of some sort. It seemed as though he had been replaced by a successor, which was interesting. Perhaps he too could be of use to the swordsmen. Ico seemed rather simplistic, his physical skills impressive but technique rudimentary, the other Kozan had more adaptability though lacked the same raw physical attributes. Each had some talent, enough to be further tested as potential daggers at least.

The Konoha Bannin’s words washed over him, if he was being sincere then it seemed to affirm, he was in fact a Konoha shinobi. He carried a certain presence of strength, though he had never met an Iwagakure shinobi that was so effeminate and if he was anyone of repute from his own village, he would surely have recognized him, typically only the Jouchaku or Toukai in Kiri had red hair, but this man did not have their distinct yellow eye coloration. Glancing at him again he took further note of the eye patch, he had heard something about a one-eyed Bannin of Konoha hadn’t he? The swordsman of the Mist huffed with amusement as the man dropped his name. “It’s Karagata Shinjiro. Only my closest allies are permitted to speak to me so casually” he warned coldly, shifting his focus enough to look at the man directly for the first time. He had killed people for less, his violence shifted often, depending on his whims or his overall mood for the day.

He knew he was expected to play nice at international events, especially this groundbreaking collaborative exam spurred on in the aftermath of a war. But while he knew he couldn’t kill someone simply for disrespect, he wasn’t beneath less lasting violence. Perhaps a simple non-lethal poisoning or a swift knockout blow when one was least expecting it. There were many ways he could enforce some level of intimidation. However, he was not reckless and wished to learn more about this man. If his instincts were right, he was a Bannin caliber shinobi as well and not someone he could easily defeat. “I didn’t expect I’d need to introduce myself; I rarely do. Your reputation however is far more muddied. What was it they call you, the One-eyed Demon of the leaf, was it?” he wondered, again probing around and expecting his instincts to lead him in the right direction. As of yet he still had no idea what this man wanted with him, and he didn’t particularly care. His attention was now split between the match and the conversation, and each was only mildly entertaining him for now.

Aizawa, Yoru smirked as the man now known as Karagata, Shinjiro seemed to hold distain for the red headed Bannin from Konoha, as the cold warning cooed from Shinji’s mouth. Aizawa, Yoru knew he had nothing to fear not that Shinji couldn’t cause some damage and maybe even kill him, but this was an international event and he doubted Shinji was willing to break the treaty of peace and certainly not in the midst of a chuunin exam in a crowded area.

Though Yoru was ready, just in case things did go array. His hand ready to withdraw a kunai at moment’s notice, he pondered how fast Shinji was? The moment he moved Yoru would draw the weapon and push it deep into the man’s neck, but he felt as though that wasn’t going to happen.

Once he finally finished talking, a quiet chuckle escaped his lips “Now, now Shinji do play nice.” His voice poured out in a sing song fashion, he raised his finger “People call me many things, white-eyed, one-eyed, commander, Bannin, Yoru – Daremo. he slowly said the final name, the one he went under whilst on the run from Konoha and served alongside Shinji in battle, before the beasts were unleashed on the various villages a mystery still not solved.

Aizawa, Yoru pondered if the man still remembered him or at least the name “It’s been a while since we flew together, Shinjiro.” Spoke the bannin, his tone changing to that of respect.

Shinjiro reveled in the tension he felt, Yoru’s own skill and readiness to kill rivalling his own. Perhaps Maido’s madness had been rubbing off on him, for he truly felt the desire to test himself against this man. He didn’t particularly care if he lived or died, he had served Kirigakure well and the war was over. If another conflict emerged at his expense it wouldn’t matter to him if he was dead and if he lived at least he would have taken out one of the enemies strongest Bannin. But then again, there might yet be a chance to fight this man without risking his life or backlash against Kirigakure. The overseer of the seven swordsmen relaxed, chuckling lightly as he sat back in his seat as Yoru insisted on using his nickname. He could respect the confidence at least. If he knew this man was the commander of Konoha’s Anbu, then certainly his demeanor would make sense, though that would be all the more reason to attempt to kill him. Though, if given an opportunity in a better setting then surely Shinjiro would make an attempt regardless.

When the red-haired Bannin let that last name slip however, Shinji’s demeanor shifted once again. At first the name only sounded vaguely familiar, but as he mentioned flying together it all came flooding back. The man smiled, the expression seen in the shift in his facial muscles and the warming of his eyes. He was pleasantly surprised and in fact quite interested to learn how such a thing could come to be. A Bannin of the leaf had worked alongside Kiri and Iwa as a mercenary before the war. The masked man had made an impression on him, his speed, the red bird-like wings and the impressive sensing abilities. It all started to tie in together now. Just what was this man’s angle? Where did his loyalties truly lie? He wondered. “Well, I can’t say I expected that” he admitted, his ordinally bored-sounding tone carried a sense of liveliness to it now. “Congratulations, you’re officially the most interesting person here. To what do I owe the honor? Yoru” he inquired, reciprocating the respect by now considering the man an equal and giving him his full attention. The match was rather boring anyway.

Yoru instantly felt the tension in the air relax, his own fight of flight instincts subdue, he was glad that things didn’t go south, he didn’t want any blood on his hands and certainly didn’t want to bring any attention to himself and killing an enemy shinobi in cold blood would not be a good choice. Though if Yoru was honest with himself, he wasn’t even sure if he could kill Shinji if he even tried. Certainly at not such a close range, he’d been nothing but impressive when they fought side by side all those years ago.

He smiled as the man spoke and a laugh soon followed “I do like to be centre of attention and I do admit I am a very interesting man.” Though if he was honest, he didn’t actually enjoy the attention and certainly not the infamy that was attached to his name, sometimes he missed the days of Daremo the masked travelling mercenary.

“It only seemed fair that I introduced myself, I’m glad you’ve decided not to kill me I didn’t want to have to stab you in the throat with a kunai.” He said as a smirk ran across his face as his hand moved away from his kunai holster and placed his hands up as though to say I’m unarmed “Though if I’m honest, after seeing your power and sensing whatever spirit is inside you.” He said with an all-knowing tone, it was certainly a powerful one that was apparent and he longed to see it in action “Seeing these Genin fight and all these powerful shinobi has got me itching to fight, perhaps we’ll meet each other in the upcoming exhibition bouts.” He said.

It seemed that in the few moments Shinji had turned to listen to Yoru the match had already concluded. Ico had won through sheer physical prowess and aggression whereas Kozan displayed much more adaptability and cleverness though ultimately was too inexperienced. Still, if his predecessor Kozaki was any indication the boy’s potential was practically limitless whereas Ico would eventually find a plateau with such simple tactics. Though under some guidance something could be made of him. The overseer of the Seven swordsmen couldn’t say he was particularly impressed by either of them, but they were at least worth a chance at becoming daggers. He wondered if any of the current swordsmen would be interested in mentoring them. If necessary, he supposed he could take one under his wing.

Shinjiro shrugged, “This would be an inconvenient place to spill blood, yours or mine” he stated, seeming to show some respect to the possibility that Yoru could actually stand against him. He smirked at the mention of the spirit within him. He didn’t make much effort to hide the fact that he was a Jinchuuriki and had openly displayed some of his transformation abilities in previous tournaments, though it was interesting that the man stated he could sense it. He recalled now that the man had been able to scan the entire palace when they had attacked the shinobi inside. It was apparent the man was a skilled sensor, but also seemed likely that he was experienced in fighting Jinchuuriki. All the more reason to be cautious around this man, though one would be foolish to think he needed to rely on the spirit within to be deadly in combat. In his mind he was every bit as dangerous without it. The mention of the exhibition matches further piqued his interest. He hadn’t yet signed up and hadn’t felt any need to. “So, there is at least one worthy challenger then? Hmm, yes. Let us fight.” He accepted the challenge, before thinking back to what he recalled of the man as well as what he knew from rumors. “You’re fast, aren’t you? A long-range fighter…try not to spend the whole time running or I’ll just get bored” he considered. What was it he had heard about his ninjutsu styles,: raiton and Acid was it? Those could prove challenging, Shinjiro was a specialist in taijutsu, his answer was typically to assassinate someone quickly before they had a chance to cast jutsu but if Yoru could constantly evade him he might find himself in a rather annoying bout. Nonetheless he was eager to be properly challenged.

Yoru watched the bout with interest, the young boy now known as Ico had won the match almost as quickly as it had begun. He’d used his dominate speed and strength to his advantage, but his tactical thinking was next to none. Interesting thought the Bannin, he’d keep a close eye on the young man and watch his career with interest.

His attention then diverted back on to Shinji, as he spoke about the pair fighting and suggesting that Yoru shouldn’t run “If I were to run, surely you’d be able to catch me Shinji? It’s rather disappointing to hear you’re so slow.” He teased through a thin-lipped smirk, once the bout came to an end people started to stand up for from their seats for a short intermission.

“Whilst we wait for the next bout, it seems only fair I buy you a beer.” He said as he slowly stood up from his own seat “You certainly could do with loosening up, I do wonder if you’re a slow drinker as well?” he said coyly.

Truthfully Shinjiro was impressed by Ico’s physical might. He was far beyond his own prowess at that age, though being trained as an assassin first, naturally Shinjiro had always been swift and precise and with a calm and tactical mind. Only after being sealed with Vorashu did he learn to embrace recklessness and ferocity from time to time. He was the type of person he could train and mold into a useful swordsman. Though, the last thing he wanted to let on to his enemies was any kind of attachment in interest in others, least of all the fact that Ico had in fact been adopted by his girlfriend. There was also the other boy, Kozan. A natural predator that reminded him more of himself at that age, though he seemed to be lacking in drive and perseverance. It was possible he might have even been holding back as Shinjiro had so often done as a young teenager. Regardless, he too would be tested. The swordsmen needed as many promising candidates as possible if they were to be properly restored and feared.

The green-eyed Jinchuuriki smirked beneath his mask. “I’ll catch you” he assured coldly, his vibrant lime green eyes practically glowing with primal ferocity. It wasn’t often he found himself excited, but he could sense this man was fully capable of defeating him. Win or lose he knew that it would be good experience to fight against someone that he didn’t need to hold back against. Perhaps he would reveal too many of his abilities, though winning tournaments grew boring without a proper challenge, and it was inevitable that eventually he would have to dig deeper into himself and show the world what he could truly do. Besides that, he was still young, his potential was not yet fully realized. There was still a massive breadth of techniques he could develop through his Kaerujutsu and he had barely even touched on ninjutsu. For quite some time he had considered delving into raiton and even the minimal doton ninjutsu he knew could become much more useful if he devoted some time into blending it better with his style of fighting.

Slowly the young man stood up as everyone began to leave the stands. He shrugged his shoulders at the offer for a drink, “Sure. Just don’t throw up on me when I out drink you.” He accepted, letting Yoru lead the way over to the nearest bar, there was sure to be at least a few liquor vendors around. He was reminded of the last time he went for a drink with a foreign shinobi, a Bannin of Sunagakure. He had heard they didn’t drink often there which was quite surprising, though as far as he knew Konoha shinobi had no such limitations aside from probably a much older legal age than you would find in Kirigakure. “The type of friends I have, our idea of loosening up usually involves a massacre. It’s not often that I drink, growing up I only ever got drunk as a form of training” he explained casually. He supposed he could at least be civil, he did respect Yoru for his strength after all and the man had a split demeanor of aloof friendliness and danger, a duality that felt quite similar to himself. Moreover, he found it interesting that the man seemed to have his own agenda, or at least had been a very convincing double agent.
