[Lonely+Training] Gotta Go Fast

Free time, free time. What to do with free time? Well, train. Duh. Sachi smiled as she locked the door to her little apartment in New Tea. She spun the key ring around her finger, the key jingling as it made its rounds. A quick twitch and she snatched the keys up in her right hand. The little good luck charm her parents had made for her years ago dangled a little just as she put them in her pocket. She smiled up at the sun, covering her eyes with her hand slightly as she looked to the sky. The smile on her face was warm and excited.
She meandered through town, a duffle bag in her hand and her backpack strapped snug. Sachi hit the market area, purchasing a few snacks for her day. She munched on a popsicle, likely strawberry, as she made her way through town. Smiles here and there. Tossing out hellos to some folks that she clearly knew better than others. Her gait was light and gave the impression that she had quite a bit of energy in the tiny package. Her feet carried her through town with chipper steps.
The shop fronts thinned as she walked, moving closer to more open spaces carved into the cliffs. Finally, she found the training ground she was looking for. There was an area marked like a track, but only straight. And, only enough for a, roughly, 100m run. There were some solid pieces of stone that had targets carved into them and inlaid with a wooden material. They looked as though they were intended for ranged practice. Be it arrows or thrown weapons. Not far from there, a basic bench with weights, and a weapon rack with, dulled but, live and wooden weapons.
She smiled and found a simple bench to place her duffle bag. A sigh escaped her lips as she looked around. It had been a little bit since she had come to do some training, but this was the time. Before any intense training, one should always stretch. Sachi spent the first 30 or so minutes making sure to stretch every muscle group she could. Next, she figured warming up would be a good idea. So, she jogged around, did some jumping jacks, got her heart rate going.
Now that she was warmed up, Sachi opened up the duffle bag. She plucked out a couple bundles that, when they unrolled, looked like leg weights. She plopped onto the bench beside the bag and carefully strapped them around her calves. They looked bulky and cumbersome to move in, but she stretched out her legs with a smile. Sachi held her legs out with a small giggle, before they started trembling a little from the weight. Her legs dropped, being just heavy enough to yank her from the bench and thrust her into a standing position. She leaned over to the same bag and dug around, pulling out a silver stop watch.
Sachi walked herself to a line on the straight track. She took a few breaths, closed her eyes, and centered herself. Her thumb slammed down on the stop watch, starting it. She threw her legs forward, running to the other side as fast as she could. The theory was, if she could get her time with weights to her unhindered time, it would help to increase her speed. At this point, she figured she was as fast as she could get without using any equipment or tools. She was only wearing about 5 pounds on each leg, so the improvement wouldn’t be too obvious.
As she pushed closer and closer to the finish line, she could already feel the weights making a difference on her speed. The moment her right foot crossed the finish line, she snapped her thumb on the stop watch again. It took her a few steps more than she expected to stop herself, but she chuckled regardless. She caught her breath as she looked at the stop watch. “Oh, damn. That was about 3 seconds slower than my average for that distance,” her tone was optimistic even if winded. She spent another few seconds breathing before turning and walking to the line on this side. Sachi reset the watch and lined herself up. She snapped the button on the watch and booked it down the track again. Once she hit the line on the other side, she popped the stop watch and checked it. The timing was about the same as the first run.
She repeated the process over and over again for the next hour or so. As she cleared the line back near the bench, she flopped onto the bench with her duffle bag. “Uuuuugh!” she sighed loudly. The sound went from exasperation to a solid giggle. She squirmed around and reached behind her back to pull her backpack in front of her. A deft hand unzipped the pack and searched around inside. Sachi pulled out her water bottle and popped it open. As she took a big swig from the bottle, she assessed how much water was left. She waggled the bottle, hearing the sloshing sound. “I’m going to have to fill this back up at some point.”
Her body slid down on the bench a little, her head resting on the back of it. She looked up at the ceiling of the training area as she rested for a moment. A soft smile worked its way across her lips. The training felt good. She hadn’t done this in a little bit, so it was nice to get back to the basics of training. Her feet lowered more and hit the ground. Sachi stood herself back up, stretching her legs back out a little. She marched herself to the line, some pep back in her step. A cool breeze found its way into the training area and she smiled. Her nostrils twitched a little as she took in a big breath, standing at the line as she readied the watch in her hand. She flicked her thumb to start the watch and bolted down the line. Once she got to the end, she tamped the button back down. She looked at the time, “1 second faster!” Sachi exclaimed in joy. At least the training was working. Time to keep going.
