[Mission] Re-arming The Hillbilly's Traps

Post by Meth » Sat Jan 31, 2015 1:41 pm

The day was nice and bright, which was perfect for the ambitious Sachiko, a young woman in her twenties who was charged with the task of keeping her farm protected and well-attended to ever since the previous owner--her father--had passed away. She was expecting a group of shinobi, perhaps Chuunin, to arrive to the barn house early at 6:00 A.M. sharp, which was exactly after she would finish eating her breakfast. A day of tasks was always laid on in front of farmers of her prestige, and as such, she had to wake up early each morning. She hoped that the group of shinobi would arrive on time, otherwise she would lose out on tasks and have to short-hand her pay to the shinobi for the day.

Her land was not large but it was plentiful. About a single acre of land, she had a patch for every variety of vegetable in season that one could think of, on either side of a thin dirt road that lead straight to the barn house at the end of the property. Surrounding the whole area was a tall white fence with signs that said things like, "trespassers will be punished".

It was very early. The sun had not even started to rise into dim, moonlit sky. Kuodachi had planned with his teammates, Rauji and Saburo, to meet at the village gates with ample time to make the travel to the farm and arrive at the requested time. It was set to be Kuodachi's first C-ranked mission. Well, he had attempted one before that turned out to be a dud, but that didn't count! This one was for real. Plenty of risk was involved with this one. Still, nothing would stop this one from being successful if Kuodachi had anything to say about it.

Kuodachi was positioned as the first one of his teammates at the gates. He knew his teammates were not about to be late to this one. They knew the seriousness of taking on a C-ranked as Genin. If they did not look to be in their prime upon arrival, no matter how early it was, Kuodachi would not refrain from scolding them.

Kuodachi rose very early. He had a breakfast fit for a king and was geared up in his Shinobi attire. He wore a simple long sleeve shirt of a dull green color along with some black sandles, black slacks and a some black fingerless gloves. Additionally, he had a small pack filled with some nutritious goodies to tide over his, and his teams, appetite during the day. It was bound to be a long day and he would need to be prepared for anything. He stood just inside the village gate facing into the still sleeping village and waited for his teammates while munching on a nutritious oat and grain bar.

Rauji's eyes remained fixated on the moon that had currently occupied the sky for the time being as he jogged in the direction of the gate leading out of Konohagakure. He rarely had to wake up this early as he usually slept in, but he wouldn't be one to complain about it. If anything, it actually worked out in his favor because he didn't have to deal with any of his grandmothers 'last minute' tasks that resulted in him usually being late since she had still been sleeping.

His entire body was filled with excitement the more and more he thought about what him and his teammates would be doing for their first C-ranked mission together. He hadn't been with his team for that long, but his trust for the two of them was slowly beginning to build; something that he hadn't expected to ever happen since he felt like he was destined to be a loner. The excitement that overcame him would be his downfall, however, as he failed to even pack himself a snack for later after eating the small breakfast of fruits that he had that morning. All he was concerned with for the time being was meeting up with his teammates, one of which was now in his line of view as he neared the gate.

Once he had been close enough to get Kuodachi's attention, he would raise his arm into the air and flick a wave in the direction of the other while bringing about his usual smirk across his lips. Saburo had been nowhere in sight yet, so he felt a little relieved that he wouldn't be the last one there for once. "Ayeee." He would say in an effort to greet the other, the excitement throughout his body coming out slightly into his tone.

C-Rank. C. Rank. These were the kind of missions Saburo's brothers could handle on their own. It was kind of a weird feeling; he had been on Team 49 for a good while now, and he was closer than ever to his Chuunin exam. If he could be assigned a mission like this with his team, chances were they were almost ready. That was more reason for them to do well today. If they could, it could mean their exam would come quicker. As the boy made his way to the meeting spot, he thought about how cool it will be when he and his friends finally get promoted. When that day came, they could go on so many adventures; exciting ones.

The Genin couldn't help but yawn softly as he walked. He really had never really had to wake up so early. He did have a good enough breakfast with his brothers, at least, but the sleepy was slowly coming back to him. His eyes felt a little droopy, but if he kept walking he would be more than awake. Having prepared for the day, he did have a few meals in his backpack if he got hungry later in the day, and even brought along a sleeping bag in the case that this took a day or two. Along with this, he had been recommended to bring his full set of weaponry, if for no reason but to be ready for anything. If he remembered correctly, his job today was to help upkeep traps that prevented trespassers from coming onto some farmland. It sounded like there could be bandits involved, so maybe it was a good idea to bring his staff and shuriken and such with him.

As he turned one last corner, the village gate came into few. It was a lot larger than he thought now that he really looked at it. It could almost be intimidating. But, there was Kuodachi and Rauji just ahead. Looked he was the last one to make the meeting today. He hoped he wasn't late. To make up for what could have been lost time, he broke out into a bit of a jog as he made his last approach.

"Hey, guys. I'm not late, am I?" he asked as he approached.

As came into view, Kuodachi was just finishing his snack. he shoved the wrapper into his pack and returned the wave to Rauji. "Morning, Rauji." He would say as Rauji came closer. Kuodachi, unlike his comrades, was far more accustomed to this hour. It was a bit earlier than he usually rose, but he went to bed nice and early to get plenty of sleep. He was more than awake and ready to go.

Now, Kuodachi would wait in silence for the last teammate. Luckily, he did not have to wait long as it was only a moment before Saburo came around the corner. As the staff wielding boy broke into a job, Kuodachi couldn't help but let a smile loose. Saburo probably thought he was late. Kuodachi;s suspicions were confirmed by Saburo's words. "Morning, Saburo. You are right on time, but we should get moving. I would rather be a little early than a little late." And with that, Kuodachi turned to head out the gate for the start of his very first C-ranked mission. The excitement was hard to hide. No more finding a lost dog. No more searching for mushrooms. Now, there was a prospect of real, life or death, combat.

Rauji's hands managed to find their way to hide deep within his pockets and his body slouched a little forward as he came to a halt beside Kuodachi. It was hard for him to get his head out of the clouds, since all he could think about was what was to come from the mission they had accepted. Not only was it a C-ranked mission, but it also took place outside of the village he had lived in; it was also his first mission that hadn't taken place within Konohagakure, so this would just further add onto his excitement. He wouldn't just be helping out a little kid with bully problems this time, instead, he would be able to actually use some of his deadly techniques depending on what the situation called.

Shaking his head at the sound of Saburo's voice, he snapped out of the daydream he had fallen into for the shortest moment and flicked a wave the others way. "Aye, Saburo." He didn't bother responding to the question that was asked, since their youngest teammate had already answered him. With the same form he had taken before, hands in pockets and body slouched forward, he would follow behind Kuodachi as he trailed away from the gates. As much as he wanted to take in some more of the moonlight view he had of the sky, he kept his eyes focused on their surroundings. They were outside of their safely protected village now, so he knew he had to be aware of what was around them since anything could happen at anytime.

With a smile to Rauji, the young Genin followed after his team as they made their way from the village. He couldn't help but look back as they went; they were leaving the safety of home for the first time to really be Shinobi. After a nervous tug at his backpack strap, he turned his eyes to his surroundings as they went.

There certainly were a lot of trees outside of the village. For as far as he could see, there were trees waiting for him and his friends down the path ahead, and most likely even further. It was also kinda quiet as they walked; night time ambience, he supposed. He could hear a few birds in the distance, and crickets even closer than that. It was actually kind of peaceful. Even so, it was a strange lead to what was going to be a mission where they could possibly come across bandits. What would happen if they did? Would it be a fight? He glanced over to his team, and felt that he was safe as long as he had them. At the very least, he had the feeling that Rauji could definitely handle himself in a fight.

Kuodachi had a great deal of respect for farmers, as it was a job so monotonous, Kuodachi could never stand doing it. Yet, farmers were vital to the country. Their importance was on equal level to a Shinobi of Konoha. Without farmers, starvation would settle on the land far and wide.

As Kuodachi approached the destination, the place struck him as a bit odd. The first oddity that crossed Kuodachi was the fact that they were not a vast distance from the village. Yet, the mission states there is a bandit problem in the area. It was unsettling to think that Konoha was not able to protect their own. Beyond that, Kuodachi's eyes set upon the warning signs and couldn't help but wonder if they were necessary. It gave Kuodachi the feeling that their host might turn out to be a bit eccentric. Or perhaps the bandit problem was worse that Kuodachi imagined.

After a quick glance at his surroundings, he rested his eyes on the small farmhouse and proceeded down the path at a brisk pace. As far as Kuodachi could tell, they were right on time, but he didn't want to be even a minute late. He would head straight for the door hopefully having his team in line, side by side.

[Mission] Re-arming The Hillbilly's Traps

As Rauji walked beside the other two down the narrow pathway that went through a widespread forest that seemed to just keep going on and on, his attention would turn to look over at each of his teammates out of concern. As excited as he was to finally be taking a C-ranked mission, the thought of having to deal with bandits was enough to make his stomach a little upset. Because of past experiences he had with bandits, he was convinced that he wouldn't hesitate for even a moment to put someone out of their misery if it came down to his and his teammates lives or some bandits lives. His main concern for the time being was whether or not his teammates would be able to make the same choice as him. If not, he would have to make the decision for them.

As curious as he was to ask them if they had ever dealt with seriously injuring another human being, they had all been approaching the farmhouse quick so the question would have to wait. "We got this, guys." He would say in his usual tone in an attempt to boost the morality of his group as he stared down the sign that warned trespassers. Not wanting to get mistaken with someone who was trespassing, Rauji made sure that his belt wasn't covered by any of his sleeveless shirt so his forehead protector bearing his village's symbol wasn't covered in any sort of way; the last thing he needed was someone mixing him up with a bandit somehow.

Once they had reached the door to the small farmhouse, Rauji stood to the right of Kuodachi. With a smirk lifting the right side of his lips in the smallest manner, he curiously awaited for the door to open to see who had requested their assistance.

Oh neat, a farmhouse. This must have been the place they needed to report to. Aside from the warning sign at the property line, everything was looking fine. He followed his team up to the front door of the house and stuck to Kuodachi's left side as they stood waiting for their contact. It was a nice looking little house. It was also surprisingly close to the village. Maybe he had brought his sleeping bag along for nothing.

After a glance to his left and his right, he made a slight adjustment to his headband. Wait... Something wasn't right here. Oh, right. Saburo reached out with his right arm and gave the front door of the house a gentle knocking. Couldn't risk the contact not knowing they had arrived on time. After knocking, his hands would return to holding the straps of his pack.

It wasn't long at all after the genin had knocked that a woman taller than the three boys opened the door and looked down at them. Well, she wasn't just tall, she was humongous: at a striking height of about 7 feet, she had to crane her neck downwards like a flamingo searching for fish just to face them. Not only that, underneath her worn jean-overalls she wore a tight shirt that gave way to the outline of her muscular figure. If it weren't for her delicately pretty face she would have easily been mistaken for as a man.

"Who are--" She spoke with an unsure tone for a short moment before affirming that they were the ninja that she sent for. Headbands were a hell of an identification card.

"Ah, right. The shinobi. My name is Haki, but that doesn't really matter much," she said as she chuckled to herself. "Well, you don't really have to come inside, so I'll just point out where the traps are."

Stepping out of her house, she closed the door behind her and pointed over to the white fences on the boundaries of her property. Of course, the three short genin wouldn't be able to see over the tall crops, so instead they would have to try to walk through them in the direction she pointed. There were three locations, one for each of them: the left-side was through the corn, the front gate was straight down the road, and the right-side was through some sort of grain.

"There's an 'X' marked on the ground where you'll have to dig. It'll be about 8 feet down until you hit some hard metal thing. Come back to my door when you've done that." Without bothering to mention tools or anything of the like, she re-entered her house, leaving the three to go towards their destinations. Of course, the initial challenge would be to navigate through the thick plants for the left-and-right-goers. The person taking the middle lane would have it easier... Relatively--the ground was tough and it was a wonder how one could grow crops in the rock-hard dirt. Without a tool of some sort they wouldn't be able to dig down 8 feet, much less 8 inches.

As the massive figure opened the door, Kuodachi's head went straight up towards the sky to meet the eyes of the burly woman. A flood of thoughts began to rush through his mind. The main question was, why would a person of such stature need Shinobi to do this work? The thoughts were shoved to the back of his mind as the woman began speaking. Kuodachi nodded to confirm that they were the Shinobi, though it was probably obvious at that point. She was quick to get to business, directing them to dig at certain site marked with an X. Seemed fairly straightforward thus far. The problem now was figuring out whether or not there would be told at the sites or if the woman had just forgot to mention that.

As the door closed, Kuodachi would get right to work laying out a plan, though the required course of actions seemed obvious. “So, we split up. Three places to dig, three members of the team. I am hoping there will be shovels when we find the Xes. If not, head back here and we will have to ask for some. I will take the one through the corn. Rauji, take the middle. Don't need you burning the place down should anything go wrong.” He smiled at Rauji, to note the joking nature of the words. With that, Kuodachi began right in the direction that the woman pointed through the corn field. He would have suggested mentioning that to the lady right then, but it seemed she was fairly confident. There must have been something the host was planning on... Or at least, Kuodachi was hoping that was the case. Additionally, the lady did not seem like she wanted to be bothered much beyond what was necessary. Either way, on his way to the place the woman pointed at, he would be on the lookout for a shovel.

Rauji would do his best to keep a blank stare over his face and not let out even the slightest chuckle as he stared up at the large woman that stood a foot and a half taller than him. He was expecting some petite little farm girl or old man as opposed to the butch looking woman. This wouldn't stop him from paying close attention to the directions she had been pointing for them to go however. The left and right directions she had pointed in looked like they would be a hassle to go through, especially if he had to toss out some of his fire release techniques for some reason. "X's and about eight feet down..." He repeated the words under his breath quiet enough to where he could barely even hear it himself in an effort to better remember the instructions.

Once the door closed, Rauji turned to face Kuodachi in a way that almost seemed like he was expecting the other to formulate a plan; which was only proven moments later. As much as he tried to keep up a tough guy front while they were on missions, he couldn't help but let a short laugh slip by him at the thought of accidentally burning everything down. It was actually quiet a relief on him to hear that he would get to avoid going through the tall crops for the time being, even though the front gate seemed like it would be the prime area to see some sort of trespasser.

"I'll try and be quick in case there isn't anything to dig with." With a nod, he turned his back to face the farmhouse and picked up a light jog down the road in the direction of the front gate. Finding some sort of tool to actually dig the eight foot hole was his goal for the time being, so he was sure to keep his eyes looking back and forth at both sides of the road as he jogged down it.

To answer for the knocking he had performed, Saburo was greeted by his most interesting site of the day: A giant of a woman. That was rather surprising to the boy. Before now, the tallest girls he had ever met had been the Ito twins from his older brother's team. But this woman, she made even them look small to him. It honestly was almost a bit intimidating. Anyway, she seemed to recognize them for who they were and quickly gave them the directions they needed for their work. As quickly as she told them, though, she went right back into her house, leaving the three Genin standing on her doorstep.

Kuodachi - true to form - went to giving him and Rauji direction from there. It was a fair choice that the red-eyed member of their team be kept away from anything they didn't want catching on fire. Otherwise, it seemed it was up to Saburo to attend to the trap that waited for him on the other side of the grain field. Flashing a quick smile to his team as they separated to go to their respective locations. Step one from here was to make his way through the field. It was while he gently tried to split the stalks of grain ahead of him that he wondered why they were splitting up for this. He had learned a bit of a lesson back during their first team exercise, and that was to basically listen to Kuodachi whenever he was the one giving direction to him. Well, maybe he would get lucky and not have to do anything more strenuous than digging a hole. He wasn't about to let some manual labor bring him down on completing this mission.

As Kuodachi would approach the corn field, he would catch on to an all too eerie atmosphere within it. Perhaps some kind of creature was lurking in the midst of the green-yellow leaves, or, perhaps, it was just a sudden onset of paranoia. Such paranoid feelings would be confirmed, however, when rustling could be heard deeper within the corn field. The stalks themselves were about 12 feet tall--shorter than most others in production within the Fire Country, but that wasn't the point. The towering height gave a severe disadvantage to Kuodachi as each stalk seemed to be a wall in between the next, blockading his line of sight completely. He would need some sort of a defined direction in order to head to the X instead of getting eternally lost.

Poor Saburo had the most difficult path of the three. The grain wasn't just any grain, it was a secret strain of grain that the farmer had been preparing selectively. It didn't appear that way, for the X was in plain visible sight in the distance, but it was. Had it been rice or something else, the trip would have been easy, but if Saburo were to step onto or into the puddles of mud that they grew in, he would find that his feet would sink several feet inward into the brown mud that held the grain crops. The truth of the matter was, the grain secreted a sticky compound that fused with the dirt around it to make a quicksand-esque, cement-like dirt, only to turn into a stronger version when the regular irrigation system functions came around.

Rauji's path, on the other hand, was much simpler than the other two, and in moments he would arrive to the front gate of the relatively small territory that the farmer owned. Indeed, there was an X at the gate, something that the three quite possibly could have overseen on their way to the farmhouse. However, the only difficulty that arose was that there wasn't any tools along the way; after all, what kind of farmer doesn't look after their tools?

Kuodachi would enter the cornfield with a direction in mind. As the paranoia set in, it was nothing new for the boy. He was naturally quite paranoid. Always thinking of the worst possibilities really brought about a great deal of strain on a small boy's sanity. Lucky for him, paranoia was not a poor quality to have as a Shinobi. Such a ailment brought about a sense of enduring vigilance to danger. All this aside, Kuodachi would turn back only moments after entering the cornfield. If something was truly lurking within the maze, it would not be a wise idea for the very short boy to use a route through the corn. Instead, he decided on a much better course of action to take.

After turning back and leaving the cornfield, he would return to the path that led to and from the farmhouse on which one X was suppose to reside. Kuodachi's plan was clearly faulty. It banked on the hope that the woman had not just forgotten to mention shovels. It called for a lot of potentially needlessly wasted manpower. Even if Kuodachi managed to make his way through the corn field, he very well may need to head right back if no shovel was available. Given the sounds, that lingered in the maze, it was definitely not a good idea. Rauji had the most straightforward path to take. If a shovel was not at the X Rauji was heading to, then there was likely not shovels at the other Xes. Checking the easiest to reach X would save time. If he saw Saburo, he would call out to him and save him the effort as well. If not, it was too late for him, and he would simply head down the path to meet up with Rauji.
