[Mission] Oh that pretty floral bonnet...

Mission DetailsShow
At the gates of the village they waited, a carriage of a pale wood had been constructed for the trip, a single dark brown horse standing in front of it, properly tethered and secured to the cargo he would pull with a male of about twenty years of age sitting in the seat. The man was clearly a civilian, hired only to drive the carriage and nothing more. He was leaned back in the seat, hands behind his head and fingers intertwined, eyes closed, as he awaited the arrival of the escorts his Mistress had hired.

Within the carriage was Mami and her daughter, though the curtains were already drawn, a pale blue color in the little windows and only the bright sun in the sky betrayed the fact that the carriage had any occupants at all. It would not be a terribly long journey, but it would certainly have its own hazards, especially given recent events in the area. However it was those same recent events that had made this mission so very important, and why this pair needed protecting.

Mami knew three shinobi were being sent to guide them, and she would wait in the carriage for their arrival, only dismounting when told by the driver that they were there.

[Mission] Oh that pretty floral bonnet...

Since becoming a Chuunin, Kuodachi sought out more and more missions on his own volition. This desire for missions spawned from the new found freedom of being able to leave the village, no longer being constricted in such a manner. It felt like the shackles were listed from his ankles and he suddenly grew wings. Who wouldn't take advantage of such a benefit?

Now, Kuodachi walked the streets, his destination being the font gates of Konoha. He was geared up for anything that could head their way on an escort mission, be it bandits or some wild creature. Thus, he sported all his gear. His clothing were of darker colors than usual. His shirt, a collared shirt, was of a dark forest green, black pants, and black tabi. As he understood it, he'd be working with Kazuo, the Inuzuka from his Chuunin exam as well as a third Chuunin he had yet to meet. As always, Kuodachi hoped for an uneventful mission that would be completed without a hitch.

After a quick stop to buy a small bag of apples, Kuodachi continued on to the meeting point. In a matter of moments, he caught sight of the carriage. As always, he was early. He did not see Kazuo or the one who, for now, he only knew as a name on paper, Makoto. Still, he assumed that they would be there in the next moments. Kuodachi continued forward, munching on an apple as he did so. He would call out as he came close to alert them of his approach, “Heard you all are in need of some bodyguards!”

"Hyuuga Makoto, chuunin, rep-" A brief pause punctuated by a light cough. ". . .reporting in."

The second escort to report in did not cut a particularly impressive figure. Short for his age, with long, earth-toned sleeves concealing whatever muscle he had, and a cough (courtesy of smoke inhalation) that simply wouldn't go away, he seemed more pasty scholar than deadly shinobi. There were, of course, his eyes to be considered. The Hyuuga and their Byakugan were known and (to some degree) feared throughout the ninja world, and even to civilians the off-white, pupil-less iris was sure to intimidate (or at least confuse). Hopefully, that would be enough for his teammates to give him the benefit of the doubt; if not, well, that didn't really matter did it?

In truth, he didn't quite know why he had signed onto the mission. He had no escort experience, knew none of the parties involved, and didn't much like working with others (at least, those he didn't know). Be all that as it may, when the chance had come to leave the village, he had almost literally jumped to take it. Ever since the attack, the village had been stifling. A suffocating gloom had settled in over his compound, and the rest of the village was little better. Mino was gone, his team finished, his family scarcer than ever; there was nothing for him in the village but regret, misery, and bitter work. So he had signed up for the first mission out of there, and here he was.

He nodded politely at the other chuunin, but said no more. There would be time for introductions and discussion when they were under way. And if there wasn't, well, that was fine by him.

"Ah crap, ah crap, ah crap!" Woof! "Shut up! I know I'm late! You were supposed to wake me up!" Woof! Woof woof! "Don't you backtalk me! Just remember who the master in this relationship is!" Grr! "Damn straight. Now, which gate were we meeting them at again?" Woof! "Cheers buddy!"

Gathering the dog up in his arms, not exactly an easy feat given Koji's size these days, Kazuo shrugged in apology and pressed off his heels with a mighty leap, taking to the rooftops in order to avoid any traffic in the village. He was already running late as it was, he didn't have time to deal with traffic as well. Pushing to top speed, the world around him turned into a blur, buildings and people flashing by in an instant. It was only thanks to his keen nose and ears that he avoided running smack bang into a couple other shinobi that had the same idea as he did to use the rooftops as their own personal highway.

He slowed a little as he reached the gates the client would be waiting for his team at. He knew he was working with Kuo again, which would be interesting. He hadn't seen either Kuodachi or Saburo since they had taken the Chuunin exams together. The other guy was a Hyuuga, Makoto or something like that. He seemed to be working with a lot of the white eyed clannies lately. Not that he was complaining; he loved pitting his nose against their eyes. It was quickly becoming one of his favourite pastimes.

He pushed off the final rooftop with a grunt and curled himself around Koji, who was roaring and barking at him the entire way, demanding to be put down. He came full circle, performing a frontflip, before landing right near the carriage and his two teammates. Dropping Koji to the ground, who seemed to almost kiss the earth praising whatever dog gods he believed in, Kazu offered a thumbs-up and a lopsided grin. "Sorry we're late! Inuzuka Kazuo and Koji, ready to kick ass and take names!"

Noting the somewhat gloomy atmosphere surrounding the Hyuuga and Kuodachi munching on an apple –wait did he have an entire bag of those– Kazuo gave a sheepish chuckle. He had a simple pack on, its lone strap slung over his left shoulder and under his right arm, clipping together in the middle. It served to press his coat down a little but he could live without the dramatic flair if it meant he didn't have to sleep on the dirt. "So, uh, how's it going?"

The moment the first chunin arrived, one of the curtains moved and pale blue eyes peered out before an older woman could be heard clicking her teeth in agitation and the curtain closed swiftly. A moment later the door to the enclosed carriage opened and a woman stepped out. If the boys had been expecting an aging woman to belong to the name ‘Mami’, they would be very wrong. Mami herself was near thirty, but she certainly didn’t look it. With long dark hair that reached just past her shoulders and dark chocolate eyes the woman was quite a beauty, and her gypsy-like appearance simply emphasized the fact. She wore dark leggings that fig her perfectly with boots that tied up the front and reached nearly to her knees. A dark blue sash at her waist hung down and over her left hip and around behind to cover her backside, not unlike a rather small skirt and over this was a brown belt. The belt held three small bags, unknown to the escorts these contained three differing types of currency and off her left hip was a straight sword though it was mostly for show. The woman had requested escorts for her work this time because she truly had only just a working knowledge of the blade.

Her shirt was a corset-vest that accented every curve with fluffy sleeves that, at the elbow, split to allow for freer movement. A simple cloak was clasped at her throat that was just long enough to reach behind her knees, the hood currently pulled up over her head. ”You three are my escorts then?” she asked as she stepped from the carriage, and behind her one of the curtains shifted again, the same blue eyes from before peered out at the boys, wide and curious as they took in everything they could see. ”My daughter is in the carriage, her name is Hana, she’ll stay in the carriage for most of the trip and is my primary concern, hm?” she mentioned glancing up towards the driver. ”Nobu can give you more information.” she added before disappearing into the carriage again and the door closed behind her, another agitated sound coming from the woman before the curtain snapped closed again.

Nobu was sitting at the edge of his seat as he waved at the boys. ”Don’t mind the Lady.” he said reassuringly as he lit himself a cigarette and took a drag, breathing the smoke out through his nose before speaking again. ”She’s a trader and a merchant, but secretive as hell and very protective of her girl. We got a journey ahead of us so let’s get moving? I assume you three will want to work out who of you is taking lead and what formation or somethings before we go?” he mentioned, relaxing as he waited for their decision. He would only start moving once they came to a consensus.

Just as Kuodachi was reaching the cart with his first words, he heard words from over his shoulder. Seems the Hyuuga was not too far behind him. Those familiar white eyes were always a welcomed sight. Kuodachi had a great deal of respect for the clan, specifically, their skills. He would return the polite nod. Only a second later, his attention would be grabbed by another recent presence, this time, one that he was familiar with, Inuzuka, Kazuo and his companion, Koji. Oddly enough, they had not really encountered each other outside of the Chuunin exam. Seems proper that their paths would cross again.

Kuodachi's inclination was to return a warm welcome, but he knew that would make the Hyuuga feel like an odd man out. Did that matter though? After a seconds thought, he responded, “Good to see you, Kazuo, Koji.” Before he got the chance to respond to the inquiry, he heard the click of the click of the door and his gaze redirected to the carriage. Catching glimpse of the blue eyes peering from under the curtain, it was easy enough to assume that to be the daughter, but to anticipate the woman being their client, Mami, that would have taken an entirely different level of deducing skills.

Kuodachi wouldn't let his surprise be known, of course. He would meet the woman with a smile quickly nodding to confirm her initial question. As she explained that her daughter was the top priority for protection, Kuodachi would quickly respond with a light bow to declare his understanding. The woman was clearly very concerned with her daughter's safety. To hire three Chuunin for this trip was more than plenty, assuming this was just a normal trip. That is, unless they were missing some information.

His attention turned to the driver, Nobu as he began speaking. As he finished speaking, Kuodachi would pose his own question, “Right right, before we get moving, I just have a quick question. Is there anything in particular we should be concerned about on this trip?” The words carried a hint of accusation, though it was mostly to gauge a reaction from the driver than anything else. After listening to a response, Kuodachi would speak up immediately jumping to orders for both Makoto and Kazuo. He did not really need to inquire about skills to make the formation. “Kazuo, take the front.” That was expected of course. Kuodachi had seen how proficient the Inuzuka was in close quarters with his own eyes. Of course, the Hyuuga was likely just as skilled. So, speaking up and turning his gaze to the Hyuuga, “Mind also taking point with Kazuo?” Kuodachi would move to stand behind and to the right of the cart.

The formation was simple. An ambush was quite unlikely given Koji and Kazuo's nose along with a Byakugan. With such a little need to prepare for a surprise, it was simple to stick two strong combatants up front and for Kuodachi to lay back, ready to defend the caravan with barriers should the demand develop. Should no argument arise with such a formation, Kuodachi would signal Nobu once all were in position, “Ready when you are, Nabu.”

Fortunately, their third member did not keep them waiting long before making an entrance; and an entrance it certainly was. A large youth falling from the sky, performing a beautiful flip before landing and beaming furiously at his companions, his similarly oversized dog flopping exhaustedly to the ground. Even before his introduction, his lineage was clear. An Inuzuka. Oh boy. It wasn’t that he dogmatically disliked or mistrusted the clan based on deep-rooted prejudice or traumatic childhood event. It was just that, well, sometimes they seemed a bit . . . daft.

As it happened, this Inuzuka’s aerial introduction closely mirrored that of another of his clan, one that had rather startled the young Hyuuga at the time. Now, Kazuo’s bombastic entry warranted a turn of the head and a raised eyebrow, but no sign of surprise or shock; whether this due to increased awareness or composure was unclear. Kazuo received the same polite, perhaps terse, nod that Kuodachi had. Nor did the familiarity between the two go unnoticed. That was good; they were probably used to working in tandem, and (more importantly) would be more likely to engage each other in conversation, thus leaving Makoto in peace.

At that moment, Mami appeared. Makoto didn’t know what he expected (he hadn’t given it much thought), but Mami was not it. Though not exactly young, age had been kind to her. With her sword, close-fitting, functional outfit, and overall air of authority (or was it mystery?), she seemed a character from one of his novels sprung to life; a gypsy warrior, or a queen on the run. Whoever she was, she had little enough to say. Three civilians. Two in carriage, one driver. Assumed minimal defensive and offensive capabilities. He gave her a nod (his neck was a bit tired of the motion, but it was still easier than talking), and gave his attention to the driver. Nothing he said was terribly interesting; eccentricity often seemed to accompany wealth, as did overprotective parenting. His business was guarding, so guard he would.

That said, Kuodachi’s question was not without merit. For such an inoffensive sounding task, three full-fledged chuunin did seem a bit excessive. Then again, these were dangerous times, and if this Mami could afford it, why wouldn’t she want a little extra protection?

When that was settled, and they began discussing formation strategy, Makoto interjected, speaking to the other two shinobi for the first time. ”I would prefer to take up the rearguard, if I might. My Byakugan can cover a wide radius, but if an attack should come from the back I believe I would be best prepared to quickly detect and respond to the threat.”

However that discussion resolved itself, he would move to his proper position, and await their departure.

Just as he was about to strike up a conversation, the doors to the caravan opened and the curtains parted to reveal a figure that had the Inuzuka stopping dead in his tracks. "Hel~lo Mami…" he muttered under his breath, a lopsided grin settling into place on his face. The words exotic beauty came to mind as he took in Mami's tan skin and… impressive clothing. The grin grew a little more and before he shook his head and forced the less than professional thoughts to the back of his mind. In doing so he completely missed whatever it was she had said and she disappeared back into the caravan. With Kuo and Makoto both heading for the front of the cart, he looked down to Koji, who shook his head at him and trotted off after Kuo. Kazuo shrugged and followed the rest of the group. Seriously, how was it his fault that he was a healthy teenager?

The sting of tobacco and smoke hit his nose hard, causing him to scrunch it up in minor annoyance. He couldn't understand how people could enjoy that crap; didn't they know how badly it smelled? "Hey man, you say secretive, I say alluring." Kazuo was standing a little ahead of the group by this point, hands tucked into his pockets, giving Kuo and Makoto a once over. The Hyuuga had that look about him. That far too serious for his own good look. He used to have a teammate that had that look as well. And then there was Kuodachi. Good old Kuodachi. He had gotten a wardrobe update since their exams. Kazu glanced down at his own coat and flak jacket; he supposed he had as well.

His gaze was torn from his coat to Kuodachi as the younger Chuunin started throwing accusations and orders, raising his eyebrows with mild surprise and just a hint of 'really'. "Well aren't you just mister confident?" He shrugged though when Makoto asked if he could go to the back. "Doesn't bother me none. Two in front, two in back. Works out well." He gave a sly grin to Kuodachi. "Just remember who can pummel ya if you try to give me stupid orders, k?" He winked at Kuodachi and Makoto, moving a few steps ahead of the caravan with Koji by his side. He had a feeling this was going to be a long mission.

The driver chuckled as Kazuo remarked about Mami and winked at him. "Careful boy, she's a bit of a man-eater." he replied, turning towards Kuodachi as he asked about dangers. Nobu shrugged. "Far 's I know, just the usual. Bandits, wild animals, those sorts of things." He adjusted how he was sitting, gathering the reins of the horse into his hands before snapping them harshly. The horse snorted in response and started moving.

As the carriage lurched and began to move, one of the curtains moved again and this time the face of Mami's Daughter peered out. Aged about fourteen years with bright blue eyes and raven's dark hair, she was rather pretty herself. She wore a white and blue kimono with a blue sash and a blue flower in her hair. Her bright eyes were curious as she looked around, her eyes seeking out the three chunin who were escorting them as a light blush rose to her cheeks.

Kuodachi would concede quickly after asking the driver the question. He was just looking for a response from the accusation of the words and was satisfied with what he'd received. Whether or not the driver was simply also out of the loop, Kuodachi couldn't be certain of. Mami could have been hiding it all to herself, or she could just be quite wealthy and looking to ensure protection. Whatever the case may be, Kuodachi let it be for now.

In response to Kazuo, Kuodachi would response a smile, "Of course I am." And to Makoto, Kuodachi was surprised. It was Kuodachi's initial thought to have him in the back. the only reason he had decided against it was due to the profound skill it would take to sneak up on an Inuzuka and a Hyuuga. Skill that no mere bandits or animals would have. Of course, he was fine with it if the Hyuuga felt more comfortable there. Kuodachi would, in turn, alter his own position to stand outward from the door of the carriage. He would wave Kazuo's threat off with his hand closing his eyes and turning his head away from him, "Yeah, yeah. Just make sure that nose of yours is working." redirecting his words to Koji, Kuodachi added, "You too, Koji!" as he turned his head back to them with a smile. It was clear Kuodachi was quick to assume the jesting nature of the comments from Kazuo, whether they were truly jesting or not. Kuodachi was not quick to believe he would give any stupid orders anyways.

Then, promptly following giving the go ahead to the driver, the carriage was set in motion. The journey was underway, and Kuodachi couldn't be more excited to leave the walls again.

Makoto nodded somberly (again), ignoring the playful exchange between Kuodachi and Kazuo. If they wanted to joke and snipe at each other, they were free to do so, so long as it didn't interfere with the execution of the mission and they didn't try to involve him. The Inuzuka's particular brand of careless humor and easy confidence grated on him a little bit, but Makoto was well aware that he wasn't the best travelling companion either. Ignore and be ignored alike, and it should be a peaceful journey.

After all, He reasoned. If there was something in particular to be worried about, Mami or the driver would have told us, right? If such a threat existed, it would be folly to leave their escorts in the dark. Unless she thought we'd refuse the mission. That was a chilling thought. He tried to shrug it off, but it clung unshakable to his brain like a leech. This is going to be an unpleasant. He concluded moodily.

As the carriage bucked forward and Makoto slid to his position in the back of the procession, he cast a casual glance at the side of vehicle, only for his heart to skip a beat. His weary white eyes met her wide blues, and for a fraction of a second he held her gaze. She was pretty, that much was immediately clear even to the stoic Hyuuga. Unlike her worldly mother, she seemed a sheltered thing, as evidenced by the fineness of her dress and the curiosity of her eyes. Loath as he might be to admit it, Makoto was rather smitten with the little ingenue.

The next moment, he turned his face away, warmth creeping into his cheeks. He was glad to let the carriage go on ahead, as he assumed his place in the rear of the party. Berating himself inwardly for his foolishness, he forced himself to turn his attention to the job for which they had been hired. As they progressed out of the village and into the wild unknown, he would intermittently activate his Byakugan, briefly scan the surrounding woods, and deactivate, so as to maintain a consistent field of awareness while expending minimal chakra.

Kazu let out a sigh as he walked ahead of the caravan, ignoring the whinny of the horse. The constant morose silence from Makoto was going to get to him. Even Yamaro spoke every now and then; this guy was just creepily quiet. He tucked his hands into his pockets and started talking over his shoulder to the driver, Nobu. "So, you known Mami-san long? I'm guessing you have if you know she's a, what did you say? Man eater? Heh." He fell into step ahead of the horse, on the left, with Koji trotting along on the right side. Both man and dog were constantly sniffing at the air. He would have focused on his hearing as well but the wheels of the wagon crunching the earth and the constant clopping of the horses hooves rendered the effort pointless.

If he was perfectly honest, a small part of him was really hoping there were bandits or something waiting for them on their path. He was getting antsy from spending so much time in the village and only ever training. It seemed like all he was doing was training and training and never seeing any real combat. How would he ever get to really test his mettle if all he did was spar? Admittedly, not the best line of thought, the entire purpose of the mission was to keep the client safe and if there was no attacks that meant a successful mission was guaranteed.

Oh well. Maybe Kuodachi's suspicions were right and there was some secret mystery plot going on that would result in Kazu having to save the day. He could dream at least.

Mami’s daughter caught Makoto’s gaze and held it a moment before the young girl giggled. She waved at Makoto happily, a sweeping wave of the hand rather than something elegant that might have indicated the dress could have been a command from her mother rather than the girl’s preferred garb. Her wave only stopped when her mother’s hand suddenly shot out of the carriage and grabbed her wrist, pulling her in with a shout of, ”Haruko!” Yet it wasn’t long before those blue eyes were peering out of the carriage again, watching Makoto for several moments before the shade moved again and the young girl was leaning out the window and looking around once more. ”Impossible child…” came Mami’s hissed murmur from within the carriage, if any of the boys were near enough or could hear the statement well enough from where they walked.

Nobu meanwhile was chuckling as he glanced back in time to see most of the exchange, shaking his head as he returned his attention to Kazuo. ”I have been in Lady Mami’s service for only about four years now… since I turned sixteen.” he remarked, thinking a moment before he finished off his cigarette and flicked it off into the dirt. ”My father worked for her and her father before her… I guess you could say our families have been around each other for some time.” he added, glancing back towards the curious daughter, Haruko, a moment before looking at Kazuo again. ”Mami is a man-eater to be sure… she don’t keep a man longer than a week before discarding them, probably because of the situation that led to that girl there. Be careful though, that girl is just as much trouble as her mother, just not necessarily in the same way. Keep your eyes off her too, her mother catches you making eyes… well, I don’t care how skilled you are, that woman’s wrath is no joke.” he was laughing by time he finished speaking. Clearly he had seen her wrath quite often.

So far the drive was quiet, save for the conversations up front, and no sign of trouble to be seen. In the moments Makoto had his byakugan activated he may have seen something at the edge of his vision off to his left, but it danced out of the range of even his eyes so quickly it was hard to determine if it was anything at all.

Kuodachi was in a state of half alertness as they walked. To be alert the entire time on a trip that could very well end without any event would be tiresome. Additionally, he knew the powers of the Hyuuga and the Inuzuka. They should alert him should anything appear in their field, and that would be far before they were in Kuodachi's field.

Kuodachi was close enough to hear the words from inside the carriage. The mother was snapping at the girl, trying to shut down the curiosity most children possessed. It seemed futile for this stubborn little lady. It was enough to draw his attention as he contemplated the relationship, all the while, hearing in on what the driver had to say. The entire situation was not sitting well with the young Chuunin, but what could he do about it? He was simply charged with protecting this carriage on its path, nothing more.

He continued walking parallel to the carriage door in silence, only listening to what was going on and staying mildly alert to the situation on the road. He contemplated dropping back and striking up conversation with Makoto, but he could assume how such an interaction might go. Only took a second to rid the thought. Didn't seem like much of a talker. A silent, boring trip. Kuodachi really didn't mind the sound of that. Basically like getting paid to walk.

Makoto did not miss the wave, nor the following series of exchanges between the strict merchant and her incorrigible daughter, but he tried to pretend that he had not. She's just a silly girl. I'm a shinobi of the Leaf, not some foppish, idle flirt. That didn't stop him from glancing back at the carriage door every now and then, to see if she was persisting in defying her mother's orders; more often than not, she was.

He tried to focus his attention on his scouting, but that also proved difficult. No threats appeared within his immediate, comfortable range, but at the very edge (around 3/4 of a mile), shadows danced in and out of reality. Something would flicker on the edge of his consciousness, then vanish the instant he tried to focus in on it. Nerves. He assured himself. You're being absurd. Nevertheless, he kept an eye on the questionable patch, watching for any change. "Squawk"

Makoto stumbled and fell down altogether. It took only a moment for him to regain his balance, and less than that to realize that something had gone horribly wrong. But . . . how? He moved to remove his pack, but stopped halfway, as if hoping that if he ignored the sound it would go away.

"Squawk" This really was going to be a miserable trip.

"So basically, no flirting with the clients if I want to hang onto my man parts." Kazuo said with a sad sigh. "Good to know. I'm sure that's probably in the shinobi rulebook somewhere anyway. Not gonna lie, I only really skimmed it," his tone was light, joking, but it was hard to tell if he was being honest or not with that last statement. Kazuo started to whistle as they walked. It was a tune his brother had taught him; something he once said was a good tune for long missions full of walking. He also said that it was good at annoying others, especially the dogs. He glanced over at Koji while he whistled, noting the dogs ears were pinned down. Hah, good to know.

He heard a noise come from the back, causing him to break in his whistling for a second, wondering just what it was. When he focused on his hearing he heard it again. Squawking. What in the hell was squawking? Was there a bird in the carriage or something? He hadn't seen either of the others with an animal companion. Raising his voice, Kazuo shouted back, "Oi, whose got a bird back there? … And is it edible? I'm starving." The last part was a joke. …Mostly.

@ san, I now demand a recording of you attempting to whistle this, I'm intrigued.
Nobu was chuckling about Kazuo wanting to hang on to his man parts. "That's pretty much the gist of it... of course if you're old enough I hear it's a hell of a ride and worth the risk." he replied with a wink and a laugh. The man didn't seem to care of Mami heard his perverted remark or not since he didn't quiet himself at all when he said it.

And then that squawk. Haruko seemed to perk up, turning to look at Makoto and grinning as she heard what Kazuo said up towards the front. "I like birds." she said quietly, ducking down to rest her chin on her arms on the window sill of the carriage as her mother looked at her strangely.

"You like dogs too but you haven't said anything to the Inuzuka boy." Mami replied, looking out one of the other windows at Kazuo before relaxing in the carriage again and staring at her daughter.

Haruko visibly blushed as she glanced up towards Kazuo and quickly looked away again. 'He scares me..." she said quietly, disappearing into the carriage again.

Mami sighed and looked out of the carriage again at Makoto. "You, here." she said, motioning for Makoto to come closer to the carriage that she might talk to him.

In the meantime the carriage came to a stop at the start of a bridge and Nobu sighed, looking down at Kazuo. "This thing is only wide enough for the carriage so no one will be able to walk across it beside the carriage, only in front and behind. Do you guys want to check it first? We've been attacked in this area before."

Kuodachi was making the trip largely in silence, though, he did find himself glancing at the carriage when the little girl moved the curtains. She had beautiful blue eyes, and was all around quite pretty. Though, it was clear that she was horribly sheltered by her mother, seemingly captivated by the outside world as if she had lived her entire life behind those curtains. He could see the profound curiosity in her eyes as she peered out... It was cute yet also unusual.

His ears remained alert, listening to the vile conversation between Kazuo and Nobu. It was entertaining at the very least, but also held further information on those they were escorting. Not much that he couldn't pick up on without the conversation, but information nonetheless. He wondered how long it would be before Mami would snap at them as their words were probably loud enough for her to hear. Kuodachi was convinced that would be a memorable scene.

Suddenly, he heard the clash from over his shoulder. Looking back, Makoto had fallen down. Was it due to clumsiness or something else? And... was that a squawk he heard coming from Makoto? He quickly looked away, hoping Makoto didn't notice that his blunder was observed. He chuckled at the comment from Kazuo. It was clear the squawking was coming from Makoto, perhaps a pet or something. Realizing this, Kuodachi blurted out to Kazuo, “How about an apple instead?” as he was still carrying the bag filled with them. Should he accept, Kuodachi would launch one his way.

As the rolled up to the bridge, Kuodachi closer to the driver to better hear his words. It was a good idea. There was likely nothing too close as Makoto had yet to give any warning or update on anything he might have sensed. Just to be sure, he would pipe up, “Anything on your radar, Makoto? Can you reach the area across?” not even bothering to look at the target of his question. Should Makoto confirm being able to scan across the bridge as well as nothing being there, Kuodachi would continue with words directed at Nobu, “We can just continue.” Promptly following the words, Kuodachi would leap atop the carriage and sit on his legs. Laziness was not the main motivator behind the position change as much as a greater line of sight across the narrow structure.

Makoto ignored any comments about the bird, and any attention his little stumble might have generated. Even muffled by the bag that he had inexplicably wormed his way into, Akira's noise would certainly draw attention; that would simply have to be dealt with as it came. The option of withdrawing the thing from his pack and physically hurling it into the woods occurred to him, but unfortunately he had to let it go. Too many witnesses.

Just then, the merchant woman ordered him to the carriage in a not terribly respectful fashion. As he nodded and dutifully increased his pace so as to fall in line with the carriage, it occurred to him that he might be offended by her manner; he was a shinobi after all, not some gangly serving boy. And yet, he couldn't find it in himself to much care. From a young age, he had been serious, rigid, and humorless, but never very proud. The more humble among the Hyuuga believed there was an honor in serving, in humbling oneself for the good of family, clan, and village. It was a belief he had mercifully inherited, else he might have been a truly insufferable travelling companion. He brought himself level with the carriage window and inquired politely: "Yes, madam?"

When they stopped to discuss the matter of bridge, Makoto listened, then spoke. "I have seen nothing, but I will remain vigilant." As if to assert his master's trustworthiness, Akira chose this moment to wriggle free of Makoto's bag and climb onto his shoulder, announcing his ascension with a hearty squawk. To his considerable credit, the little Hyuuga managed to keep an entirely straight face, despite the strong urge to revisit his plan involving the bird and the woods.

If his Byakugan picked up no threats (ahead, behind, left, right, down, or up), he would fall in at the back of the procession, guarding the rear. If it did, well, so much the worse for the would be bandits; Makoto really wanted to hit someone right now.

Kazuo's nose scrunched up when Kuodachi offered an apple. "I think I'd prefer some fresh cooked bird but what the hell-" Before he even finished accepting the other Chuunin's offer, there was an apple flying at his head. The Inuzuka snatched it out of the air with ease… with his mouth. He bit down hard on the part of the apple he had caught between his teeth, causing the majority of it to drop down into his waiting hand while he chewed on the piece he had bitten off. The acidity of it hurt his teeth a little. This was why he preferred meat.

Coming up on the bridge, he waited a second for Makoto's call out before shrugging and walking ahead of the caravan. He stretched his arms across his chest and rolled his shoulders as he walked. "Time to get paid I guess." It was his role as the vanguard anyway to be the first out in front to check for any threats that the others might have missed. Koji was padding along beside him, ears pricked up and nose sniffing the air for any foreign scents. Kazuo did much the same. If anything did pop out, they'd be reading for it.

Even if there was a threat, he doubted it was anything he couldn't handle. Run of the mill bandits didn't have shit on him.

Mami sighed as her intent to have a conversation with Makoto was interrupted by Kuodachi’s question. But she did not interfere, instead remained silent as Makoto answered the boy before she asked her question of him. ”My daughter loves birds.” she began, glancing at Haruko who visibly blushed and seemed to recede further into her corner of the carriage. ”Would you mind riding with her for a few minutes so that she can see your friend there.” she asked, motioning towards Akira on Makoto’s shoulder. ”If it wouldn’t interfere with your work of course.” she added. If Makoto chose to get into the carriage he would be permitted by the woman to sit beside her daughter while the poor young Haruko blushed all the deeper before turning her attention to Akira. Of course if he did not Mami would let him get back to his work with only a thank you.

Looking over the rather long bridge Makoto would see nothing up ahead, and Mami would only spare a glance upwards as she heard Kuodachi climb on the roof. Meanwhile Nobu simply grinned as he watched Kazuo move up ahead of the carriage, waiting for the Inuzuka to begin his walk before the carriage began to move again. All seemed quiet and peaceful, and in fact it wasn’t until the carriage was across the bridge entirely that an explosion rocked the area, the bridge falling away.

It was then that Makoto would see movement into their area with his Byakugan, if he used it, three forms that moved at a speed only ninja could move and one of them landed about ten feet in front of Kazuo when he jumped from the trees. His hair was a dark brown, short and spiked, as he straightened up, his face hidden behind a plain black mask. His clothes were all shades of dark green and brown and no one else was immediately visible, but with his eyes Makoto may have noticed two others, one on either side of the road, hidden in the trees and unmoving as they waited for what was to come.

”Hand over the girl!” the masked man demanded, waiting an answer with a body tensed as if ready to fight.

The request was . . . not quite what Makoto had envisioned. "Oh, I . . ." He glanced at the young girl who, before so bold and firendly, now went red at the face and hid at the mere mention of her own name. Makoto felt a tinge of red creeping into his own expression, but managed to suppress it. "I suppose that I cou-, I mean, yes, of course, but . . ." He glanced past the carriage at the bridge, now only a few hundred feet away. "I would rather see us safe across the bridge first." Akira squawked cheerily (he seemed to be staring at the girl who apparently held such an interest in him) as Makoto bowed and withdrew from his position beside the carriage.

In truth, he wasn't particularly worried about an ambush at the bridge, especially considering how lifeless the surrounding area seemed to be. But it's best to be safe right? After conferring briefly with his fellow guards, he gave the all clear and took up his position at the rear. For most of party, it was an entirely uneventful crossing. For Makoto, it was ninety-five percent uneventful, five percent dearheavensabovewhathappenedtothebridge.

As soon as the carriage had passed over, with Makoto mere feet behind, a roar shook the bridge, and firm ground became suddenly a good deal less firm. Not taking the time to fully consider his situation, the Hyuuga formed a single handseal and jumped, soaring gracefully over the carriage to land lightly on a foot, a knee, and a hand, on the other side. As he got to his feet, a few questions shot through his head in rapid succession. What happened? Glancing back, he saw that the bridge had, indeed, been powderized. Are the civilians safe? A quick glance back at the carriage confirmed they were, at least for the moment. Am I going to get to hit someone now? A Byakugan sweep of the surrounding woods located three figures,, at first far away but rapidly converging on their position at a speed unreachable by your average bandit.

"Three figures, ninja, rapidly closing on our position from the north-east. Prepare for battle." He pointed, and began rapidly forming handseals. "Arriving in five, four, three, two, one." Moments before the masked man appeared from the trees, he formed the last hand seal, and a warping of air appeared above the carriage, near where Kuodachi might still be sitting. As their accoster stood before them and stated his demand, the warping expanded and took shape, a ghastly wraith hovered above the carriage. Anything that threatened the vehicle or its occupants would face its cold, impassive blade.

Makoto himself made no further move nor reply, leaving it to his comrades to bandy words if they would. Had he performed seals for an offensive ability, he may have simply tried to blow the bandit away the second he stated his outrageous demand. The girl? Why the girl? It was confusing to be sure, but that was neither here nor there. These outlaws threatened their empliyers, and for that they would be dealt with. "One on the left, one on the right, parallel to the one in the road." He advised his comrades quietly, though the head bandit might have bee able to hear as well. Makoto shifted his position to the left of the carriage, ready for whatever followed.
Jutsu UsedShow
*[Jump]
D-Ranked Nintaijutsu
The rudimentary technique of the High Style, Jump requires the user to first perform a single handseal, followed by focusing chakra into the feet. When the user jumps, be it at a standstill or with momentum, the chakra will release in a burst, sending him/her a distance that depends on the amount of chakra placed into the technique. This boost is purely in vertical distance; horizontal distance depends on the user's momentum when this technique is performed, meaning it causes higher jumps, not longer ones. The maximum height that can be gained using this technique, no matter that amount of chakra placed into it, is 30 feet, while the minimum is 5 feet. Each jump with this burst counts as a new use of this technique, and thus requires handseals to be reactivated.

Wind Element • Wraith
B-Ranked Ninjutsu
Makoto forms a series of hand seals, ending on the ram seal. Somewhere within a ten foot radius of his body, the air within a roughly three foot diameter begins to warp, creating a soft hissing sound. After a few moments, the air takes the shape of the roughly humanoid shape of the Wraith, as outlined by the rushing wind that composes it. Its midsection resembles that of a human, as do its upper arms and left forearm, but has a three foot long wind blade in the place of a right forearm. In place of lower body, it has roughly conicular tendril that terminates in a point roughly two meters below its waist. Its head bears no facial features or hair. It is capable of flying, and can travel up to one quarter of a mile away from Makoto. It cannot speak, but it can understand simple commands and carry out simple tasks.
Taijutsu: 3
Speed: 5
Strength: 2
Stamina: 3

Steady Stance
D-Ranked Taijutsu
A classic, neutral stance often utilized by practitioners of the Gentle Fist. The user crouches slightly, and extends his right arm forward, bent at an approximately 30 degree angle, while the left arm, bent at a ninety degree angle, is positioned about half a foot to the left. Both feet point directly forward, with the right being about one foot ahead of the left.

Kuodachi stretched out his arms into the open air as the crossed the sturdy bridge letting out a grunt from the stretching of the muscles. The air atop the carriage felt fresher, somehow. Seeing Kazuo eating the apple, Kuodachi would retrieve one of his own and begin munching on it as they made their way across the bridge. Makoto behind, Kazuo in front, and Kuodachi had a view of it all. They were ready for an attack, should one come. Of course, it seemed like it was destined to be an eventless trip.

That thought was crushed when he heard the explosion from behind them just as Makoto made the final steps off the bridge. It caused Kuodachi's body to jump from the surprise as his head quickly jerked in the direction of the noise. The sight shattered any hope of a boring trip as the bridge tumbled into the abyss below. the question flicked into his mind, was it coincidence that the explosion came after they crossed, or something more?

Listening, to the expected words from Makoto, Kuodachi felt his heart sink a little. He was expecting simple bandits, but Ninja and three of them? Kuodachi had to stifle the surge of anger he felt as he got to his feet atop the carriage. Why would Ninja be attacking this caravan? Were his earlier suspicions were holding true? It didn't matter. For now, they had a job to do. He advised Nabu as he got to his feet, “You may want to join the ladies in the carriage!” Given they were Ninja, it might be the safest place for him. Of course, that prospect depended on their desires. Being out in the open as a civilian would only be a liability and extremely dangerous.

Kuodachi's eyes were drawn to the hissing of the wind close to his ear. Spotting the wraith, his heart fluttered, only to quickly realize it was friendly and return to the matter at hand. With a stomp of his foot, he forcefully commanded the occupants of the carriage, “Stay down and away from the windows.”

Then, only moments later and perfectly in line with Makoto's count, a Ninja dropped down from the trees only a short distance ahead. Only one. Makoto quickly revealed the relative location of the other two. It was clear the individual was ready, perhaps even eager to fight as he spat his demands. They wanted the girl? What for? There was clearly something he was not told. Though, the fact that they were requesting the girl be handed over, as well as waiting to blow the bridge until they were across, were good indications they wanted the girl alive. That could easily be used to their favor for this encounter.

Quickly speaking up before Kazuo could mouth off and prematurely start the engagement, Kuodachi spoke through a mouthful of his apple, remaining calm, “Easy now. Can't we resolve this in a civil manner? Firstly, who's this girl you want, and why do you want her?” Kuodachi made it seem as if he was vulnerable, truly not wanting to fight. He stood casually, one arm crossed over his chest and the other using the first as support, holding the half eaten apple at eye level. Of course, he was alert and ready to act should the situation change.

Truth be told, Kuodachi wanted to know what he was missing. He wanted to know why these Ninja were demanding the girl be handed over. He was convinced the mother had knowledge of this. Why else would she have clearly stated her daughter should be the main focus of their protection? It irked Kuodachi to be left in the dark by an employer. Of course, he was also attempting to get a feel for their opposition. They seemed ready to strike, but just how eager were they to tango with other Shinobi? Should they make any funny moves, Makoto was ready to report on them and Kazuo was surely ready to strike.

With as focused on his hearing as he was, the explosion that ripped apart the bridge after they had crossed caused him to wince and cover his ears, the shockwave as a result of the explosion making his sensitive hearing ring to the point he could barely make out what was being said around him, though he imagined it was cries of shock and horror. Koji wasn't in much of a better state. Reacting on pure instinct, Kazuo pulled his hands away from his ears and started forming hand seals, using Koji's chakra to transform the dog into a copy of himself. Koji looked around, adjusting to the new point of view quickly, and they both turned to look at Makoto as the Hyuuga landed next to them.

He couldn't quite make out what he was saying over the ringing in his ear but he assumed it had something to do with the scents he was picking up. The ringing in his ears was finally beginning to clear up when one of the scents suddenly appear in front of him. So they wanted the daughter? For ransom maybe? If this merchant woman Mami could afford three Chuunin for a simple escort mission then she could probably afford to pay a ransom. Kazu shrugged, ultimately it didn't matter. His mission was to prevent anything happening to his clients, which meant putting down these bastards before they could do anything.

He opened his mouth to tell the masked man exactly where he could shove his demands when Kuodachi decided to speak up. The Inuzuka turned just enough to look up at the roof of the carriage. "Didn't your parents ever teach you not to talk with your mouth full?" Kazuo called out in reference to the fact that Kuo was still half way through eating an apple. "Makes you look like a jackass." He turned to look at Makoto and grinned with a shrug. "Just sayin'." Kazuo knew ignoring the baddie would probably annoy him, which was kind of the reason why he had done it.

Kazuo motioned towards Koji and grinned. The transformed dog nodded and started making some hand seals, flooding his limbs with chakra to being the four legged transformation. Kazuo himself only channelled chakra into his fingernails instead of making hand seals, turning them into claws. He didn't see any need to waste all that chakra on a full transformation for smallfry. "Koji and I will handle the outliers if things get… hectic." It was spoken in a soft tone, quiet enough that only Makoto would be able to hear it.

As Nobu tried to follow instructions and move back into the carriage, an arrow suddenly flew through the air from one of the men hidden in the trees and slammed into his shoulder, knocking him to his back on the seat of the carriage. The man groaned, slowly getting back up and snapping the shaft of the arrow before glaring in the direction it had come from, taking the arrow as a signal that he was to stay put where he was.

Meanwhile the masked man kept his gaze primarily on those in front of him, Kazuo, Koji, and Makoto, though he didn’t seem surprised at all in the change in the dog, as if he were familiar with the clan in some way. ”Nevermind why, that isn’t your business, hand over Haruko to me, now!” he demanded, his use of the girl’s name betraying a familiarity with the family.

If Makoto studied the two on the sides he might have noticed that while they possessed chakra, they did not use it. The one who had fired at Nobu was using a basic bow, his movements out of sight of the others were nothing unique, and no handseals.

At the use of her name the young Haruko stuck her head out of the carriage and suddenly she stepped out, Mami was quick to scramble after her, grabbing her by the arm to hold her back. ”But, mother! That voice!” she protested, with Mami hissing in the girl’s ear.

”Hush, it’s not safe.” Mami replied, her eyes on the masked shinobi in front of the group, all while Haruko looked up, begging her mother to let her go with her eyes, but the woman wouldn’t.

”Let her go! And this ends here!”

To an impartial, detached observer, it ought to have been clear that something was amiss in the situation. Whether from the way the mysterious accoster called Haruko by name, the decidedly un-fearful way the girl responded to his call, or even the words ‘let her go'. Yes, to those who were looking, there were certainly clues to be had. But Makoto was not looking.

As soon as he had finished the wraith and the bandit had bounded into view, Makoto had been quietly channeling chakra into his left arm, waiting for a reason to strike. The reason came when an arrow flew out of the woods (how had he not seen that coming?) and struck their driver in the shoulder. Makoto threw a quick glance back to confirm that Nobu would not require immediate aid (he appeared fine for the time being, though in likely in a good deal of pain). As he was turning back, he slipped a hand into his right thigh pouch, withdrawing a kunai, Just as the masked figure finished his demand, Makoto spun, hurling the kunai at the masked bandit’s chest, to distract him if nothing else. In the same movement, he began sprinting towards the figure in the woods nearest him, the bow-wielder; though all were shinobi, he posed the most imminent threat to the civilians (Nobu in particularly). After closing the distance to the forest as quickly as possible, he jumped and thrust out his left arm at the archer, sending a wave of wind crashing down upon him.

Some might say that he was hasty, that he resorted to violence to quickly when diplomacy might have saved the day. But the bandits had attacked a man travelling under the protection of Konoha, and in doing so had incurred the emnity of the Leaf; Makoto was simply doing his duty as executor.

[Mission] Oh that pretty floral bonnet...

As the arrow slammed into Nobu's shoulder, more information was revealed. It was a nonfatal shot, the question that remained was whether that fact was intentional or not. With Kazuo's retort to Kuodachi's chewing, Kuodachi swallowed down the bite of apple with a simple, general apology, “Mmm. Sorry,” as he let hand holding the apple fall to his side.

Following hissed response of insubordination from their assailant, Kuodachi chuckled a light, forced chuckle. The three attackers were either skilled, or their leader did not understand the situation. It became his business when he was hired to protect the caravan.

“I don't think you...”

His speaking was cut short as he heard movement from below followed by the sweet words he assumed to be from Haruko. There was undoubtedly something Kuodachi was missing. There was a clear familiarity between these parties. Haruko clearly knew the assailant, and was ready to run to him. She definitely didn't feel like she was in any danger. Kuodachi knew he had a habit of reading too much into situations, but this time, he knew there was something up.

With a harsh sigh, Kuodachi hissed out quiet words through gritted teeth directed to Mami, but also hoping for a response from Haruko as well, “In the carriage, now. They'll be dead shortly.” He wanted to know if Mami and her daughter truly wanted these people dead or if there was something more. Regardless, these people already injured their caravan driver and they needed to be dealt with. Force was the quickest way to ensure the mission integrity is kept.

Immediately following the words, Kuodachi launched himself into a back flip off the caravan, slinging the remainder of his apple at the masked man on the road as he did. As soon as the apple left his hand, he pulled them together and began weaving handseals as he flew through the air. Finally, as he waved the seals, he shouted, “Kazuo, Makoto! I'll manage defense!” The seals would finish, hopefully, as he vanished from the sight of the enemies and result in a large, blue barrier appearing around the entirety of the carriage. It was a weak barrier, but he was reasonably certain they would not be going for kills on its occupants, except for, maybe, Nobu. They would be far more concerned about the charging Shinobi. As long as Mami could actually get her daughter into the carriage, they would be pretty safe even should the enemies try to attack them.

Well, shit. Now they'd gone and done it. Kazuo heard the arrow coming but given the distance between himself and its target he couldn't do much to stop it. He winced in sympathy when the arrow pierced Nobu's shoulder before he turned and snarled at the enemy. Apparently Makoto was of a similar mind to Kazu as he threw a kunai at the apparent leader before taking off after the archer. Kazuo let out a sigh; he had said he would take care of the outliers. With a jerk of his head, the cloned Koji took off on all fours in the direction of the other hidden figure, using his nose to sniff out his exact location before turning into a flurry of claws as he used the Piercing Fang to open his assault.

Kazu himself took a few steps towards the leader and rolled his shoulder, cracking his neck. The blue barrier sprang up behind him and Kazu simply smirked tauntingly at the leader. "Ya know, you don't seem like a slaver. And you weren't at all shocked when Koji transformed." He started, flexing his claws and sizing up the man. "I'm guessing you're from Konoha, aren't you? You even know Mami and her daughter. You don't seem to care about killing them and you only want the kid." He scowled, the pieces clicking in his mind. "Ah… so that's why you want her. Sorry pal but orders and order. I'm gonna have to kick your ass for shooting Nobu there."

Tensing up as he lowered to the ground, he pressed his hands to the dirt road for a second and then he was off like a shot, moving on all fours as efficiently as he would as if he were on two. He circled around the man, aiming a swipe of his claws at the man's ankle, attempting to hobble him, before he would circle around again, all the while swinging his claws at the man's arms, legs, and chest. He was aiming to bleed the man, not kill him. The others would want to question him and get to the bottom of this little situation.

Ducking low during a charge, Kazuo hooks his claws around the back of his opponent's ankle, digging his nails in and drawing them along to slice against the ankle's tendon. The resulting pain is enough to cause those with lesser fortitude to limp and wince whenever they apply pressure to the injured foot. Opponents with less than 5 Stamina will receive a -1 to Speed until the end of the thread or they receive medical treatment.

Their enemy in the mask, a boy named Senju Riku though they did not know that as of yet, simply grinned behind his mask at the kunai Makoto threw his way. His hand seemed to shoot out as he snatched the kunai out of the air by its hilt, throwing it point down to embed into the ground at his feet.
Jutsu UsedShow
*Hunter's Prediction
C Rank Taijutsu
Prerequisite: 5 Wit
By observing a weapon's movement through the air and having a deep understanding of weaponry in general, the user is capable of predicting a weapon's trajectory. This jutsu is especially effective when the user saw the actual moment the weapon was launched, as seeing the movement of the weapon wielder provides crucial information. If they don't see the action of the weapon being launched, they still have minor prediction over the weapons trajectory, but are incapable of accounting for high level taijutsu that may be applied to the throw/strike.

*Rapid Paw
B Rank Taijutsu
Requirement: *Soft Paw
When dealing with projectile weapons, the user pushes their reflexes and their taijutsu abilities to the limit. As kunai, senbon, shuriken, etc, approach, the user attempts to rapidly shoot out their hand and catch the incoming weapon, grabbing them where they will not hurt them. If successful, they'll be able to either grab the kunai and proceed to keep it, or they may simply push/pull the weapon so that they're no longer a threat.
However the hired thug hiding in the foliage who Makoto targeted next was less than fortunate. This thug was only a samurai, knowing only taijutsu and had not been expecting the wind attack which threw him back, slamming him into a tree and knocking the bow from his hands. But the man didn’t hesitate to retaliate, his left hand dropping to a katana at his left hip while his right came up in front of him. A moment later he had hooked the hilt with two fingers and shot it out of its sheath and into his right hand and slashing at Makoto’s chest as he advanced forward at the Chunin.

Yet as Kuodachi shouted his instructions to Mami and her daughter the merchant woman grabbed the girl around her waist, despite her wails of protest, and drug her into the carriage as instructed. The only reason she did not speak nor berate her daughter then and there was simply to avoid distracting the three who were to be protecting them. All the while Nobu remained seated on the floor in front of his driver’s seat to try and stay fairly out of sight, raising an eyebrow as the barrier went up around them.

A thrown apple really wasn’t anything to Riku as well, the boy ducked to dodge it and shook his head, though he was sure to keep his eyes on Kazuo and Koji even as he moved. With Makoto attacking one of his partners, he obviously knew his real concern would be the Inuzuka and his partner. It was then that he formed the seals for a pair of ninjutsu and focused all his energy on Kazuo, even as Koji turned to attack his other partner whose cries could be heard a moment later. The man was supposed to be a speed based swordsman, but it seemed the sudden appearance of Koji spinning at him had caught him off guard and Koji’s attack struck him hard.

Riku’s eyes never left Kazuo’s, even as the chunin spoke to him. ”Why don’t you ask Haruko what she wants?” was all he said in response. He spun to meet Kazuo’s attack, snarling under his breath as he realized he couldn’t quite match the Inuzuka’s speed and his claws made contact. Riku drew a single kunai as quickly as he could and brought his fist down aiming for the back of Kazuo’s head as he fought against the pain and fought for what he thought was his.

*[Senses Open]
C Rank Ninjutsu
The main jutsu of the Skitter Step, Senses Open does exactly what the name states. The user's senses are magnified by a great degree and they are constantly looking around, gaining sensory information. Their personality will slightly change to a "defeat or be defeated" mentality. Also, a user in this state will be easy to see that they are in it since they are constantly acting paranoid by looking around, zoning in on about anything. Though, throughout the time, the ninja tends to attack purely based on instinct, rather than planning anything out, which effectively increases their speed and taijutsu by 1 and decreases their wit by 2. To activate it, the user must do a handseal, flooding chakra to their brain to 'unlock' their senses. Once activated, this lasts until they deactivate it with *Stop or until they are out of battle.

*[Sixth Sense]
B Rank Ninjutsu
By utilizing "Senses Open" the user forms the needed and seals and rushes chakra to their head. The chakra gives them a sort of "sixth sense" meaning that they can halfway predict things that are going around them. However, because of the nature of the style, some of the things that are "predicted" turn out to be nothing at all, giving them false images and sounds. For a note, this isn't able to sense things, such as a Sensor, but instead senses danger to the individual.

*Ochiba • Leaf Duster
C-Rank Bukijutsu
The user will place their middle finger through the pommel of the kunai, gripping the handle of the kunai and hanging the blade out of the left side of the palm, using the weapon as a knuckleduster. The user will raise his hands to protect his lower face, and keep his elbows almost united. This stance signifies that they will focus on the usage of their fists for a while, even though they are not at all limited to them. As they enter this stance, the user's way of fighting at close combat will alter slightly. From here, the user is very much able to get close to the opponent and deliver very painful combinations made of punches.
All the while a young girl was screaming for everyone to stop, but no one would hear her over the sounds of the conflict, or her mother as she clapped a hand over the girls mouth and told her to be quiet.

The failed kunai attack on the masked man did not surprise Makoto, for the moment of brainpower he devoted to it. In fact, it confirmed his earlier observation; their opponent(s?) were ninja, and to take them lightly was to court death itself. So when his first attack landed on the bush-bound bowman, he did not press his luck. Instead, he began channeling to his throat and leapt back, putting space between himself and the steel that had sprung into his enemy's hand. He did not have time to do a full evaluation of the bandit's chakra network, but a few things were immediately clear: A samurai. And a fast one. It would be it Makoto's best interest to stay out of reach for the time being. The Hyuuga specialized in close-range combat, but samurai focused on it exclusively. Furthermore, Makoto had little experience against swords, a shortcoming he would make sure to address when (if) he returned from this mission alive.

Instead, he whipped back his head and began a barrage on the hapless samurai. It was a vicious technique, one had had developed himself only just recently. Part of him shrunk at using it on a human being, but he forced that part to be silent. This man was an outlaw, and immediately threatening the safety of shinobi and civilians alike. Whatever injury he received at Makoto's hands would be entirely of his own making.
Jutsu UsedShow
Wind Element • Barrage
B-Ranked Ninjutsu
Makoto channels a large amount of fuuton chakra to his throat, and releases it in tiny, rapid bursts through his mouth. Each burst takes the form of a small, teardrop-shaped pellet, flying with a speed of 8 and striking with a strength of 3. The bursts do concussive damage, though because of their small size do damage similar to bullets (though somewhat less effectively). In total, fifty bursts can be fired over two posts, after which any unused fuuton chakra will dissipate.

Well, that went to hell real quick! The reactions from Mami and the girl were not entirely what Kuodachi expected. Still, he didn't have time to dwell on Mami's lies. He had a battle to see to and needed to keep on the move!

Landing behind the cart, just outside the barrier, Kuodachi quickly moved around to the side in time to see Kazuo charging, ready to take on the masked leader of the crew of three. Makoto to the right, a cry of pain from the left. Koji. Seems all three threats were being managed with superb coordination. The barrier was up to protect the carriage, along with the wind wraith, the defense was pretty solid. Now, Kuodachi needed to help his teammates where he could. He also needed to make sure that Kazuo didn't kill the masked man. Knowing Kazuo, even as little as he did, that could be a battle in and of itself.

As he sprinted forward, alongside the carriage, to get a better view, he began a series of handseals. As soon as he completed the seals, he shouted, “HEY! Masked man! Your arm is on fire!”initiating the jutsu, should his words reach the masked attacker. If the genjutsu takes hold, Kazuo would have an easy time dispatching the assailant. To make sure Kazuo understood the situation, following the jutsu taking hold, he would yell to Kazuo, “Go easy on him, Kazuo! He's already going to be missing an arm!” All the while, Kuodachi would be ready should the man change targets to the one he would believe is destroying his arm. Of course, Kazuo wouldn't be an easy one to get through unscathed.

Jutsu UsedShow
[Genjutsu • Melting Flesh]
B-Ranked Warp Genjutsu
Kuodachi will form a series of handseals before making a phrase that contains the words, “Fire” and “Arm”. If both words are heard, they will be trapped in this genjutsu. If the genjutsu is not dispelled, the victim will feel as if their right arm is burning. Should they look, they will only see smoke as their arm disintegrates into dust. This will cause an unbelievable amount of pain and they will truly believe their arm is burning off. It takes a full post for the arm to disintegrate. For the next 7 posts, they will truly believe they have lost their arm entirely, effectively making them unable to use the limb.

There was a moment when his claws dragged across the figure's ankle where he could have sword he struck… wood? Like a training post. He didn't have time to double check when he brought up his arm in order to intercept the kunai coming for his head. At such an awkward angle he couldn't perform this technique perfectly would he could at least avoid any kind of lethal damage. He shoved the hand holding the kunai aside from the wrist, guiding the attack downwards while he jumped backwards. As soon as he was safely out of range, he glanced down at his claws. He was right, there was wood underneath his nails. The hell?

Meanwhile, Koji was focused on his target. With Kazuo distracted and not close enough to call him back, the dog's inborn ruthlessness was readily apparent. His first spiralling attack had taken down the samurai easily enough but he wasn't done. He curved around and, appearing directly above the man, drove straight down into his chest, claws extended, drilling downwards with the intent of rending him piece from piece.

Back to Kazuo, now that he had inspected his nails and determined that this guy was indeed wearing some kind of wooden armour or… something, he brought his hands together to try a different tactic. "The client is Mami. It's her orders we follow, not her child's. You were stupid enough to attack a carriage under our protection. I don't care what excuse or reason you have, anyone that attacks Konoha…" After he weaved the hand seals, he began to gather chakra above his hand, which readily became apparent when a swirling orb of fire appeared there. "… Will face my wrath!" He curled his fingers around the fireball as if holding it and then took off in a zig-zag pattern towards his opponent once more.

Once he got into range, he would aim to slam the orb of flames into the man's stomach. On the off chance he missed he would turn and throw the orb in the direction the man dodged while he himself rebound backwards from the attack.

Makoto’s opponent had no means to defend himself with that would do any good against the Fuuton attack that was unleashed on him, and he was thrown back and bloodied, falling face down to the ground with a groan. He did not immediately get up, his blade on the ground in front of him as it had been knocked from his hands in his failed attempt to stop the barrage against him. It would be up to Makoto if he would finish him off or not.

Riku clearly hadn’t been prepared for such an assault on his person, looking up as he heard someone call to him he suddenly jumped back with a cry of pain and horror, he dropped to a knee as he watched his arm disintegrate before his very eyes. Unfortunately dropping to his knees as Kazuo attacked again made his disadvantage in more than just speed. Instead of slamming the orb into his stomach, Kazuo slammed it into his chest and the resulting explosion sent the man flying backwards, rolling across the ground.

Riku lay on the ground on his back, staring up with his mask on the ground a few feet away where it had flown off as he rolled, blood running down from the corner of his mouth as he tried to keep breathing. The damage of the genjutsu was still felt, his eyes closed as the pain ricocheted through the limb he thought gone and his clothing burned, as well as his skin, from Kazuo’s attack.

Haruko’s scream echoed from within the barrier. ”RIKU!” All while Mami fought to keep her daughter in the carriage.

And just like that, it was over. It had lasted little more than ten seconds from Makoto's first attack until he finished his barrage and watched his bloody foe tumble to the ground. Even so, he was breathing heavily, as if he had been training in the hot sun for half an hour. The excitement and terror accompanying a true life or death situation was still a new sensation for the young chuunin, and he could hear and feel his heart thrumming rapidly in his chest. The surge of adrenaline, accompanied by using relatively fuuton techniques in less than a minute, left him dizzy, and he took a moment to drop his Byakugan and steady himself as he studied his fallen opponent. He hadn't been able to see the exact extent of the damage inflicted on the samurai by the deadly little wind bullets (as the attack lowered his own visibility), but he knew that most of what he had fired had hit.

Withdrawing a kunai, he moved cautiously toward the prone figure, watching for any sign of movement or aggression. Should none come, he would gently kick the sword away and slip two fingers under the man's jugular. Finding a pulse, he breathed an initial sigh of relief, but hesitated at the next step. Certain moral imperatives were drilled into every academy student; protect the innocent, serve the village, and the like. But the matter of killing the guilty was a more contentious one. Some supported it only as necessary in the defense of self and others, while the more ruthless of the Leaf would end anyone who threatened or impeded them, avoidable or not. Makoto had never killed anyone, and the thought of driving a kunai into the neck of this fallen enemy (no matter misdeeds past or present) nauseated him. Still, he couldn't just let the vagabond go: Justice must be done.

Grabbing the samurai by the back of his collar, Makoto began dragging him back to the cart, stopping a moment to pocket the kunai and recover the sword. He considered retrieving the bow as well, but decided against it; his first attack appeared to have damaged it slightly, rendering it useless. Barring incident, he would drag sword and samurai back to the road, where he'd drop the latter as he surveyed the situation. To his relief (and satisfaction), no one seemed to have been hurt (more) and the de-masked bandit had been driven to the ground.

The girl's scream startled him, and for a few panic-stricken he glanced every which way, trying to find the threat that had so startled her. His panic subsided to confusion as he realized that, not only did no threat exist, the name she had spoken was an unfamiliar one. What on earth is going on? Sighing heavily, he directed his attention to Kuodachi and quietly queried: "What of the third?"

As the genjutsu took hold of Riku, Kuodachi immediately began to fear the repercussions as he saw Kazuo creating a sizable orb of Katon chakra. Sure enough, he witnessed Riku fall to his feet, his attention on his arm as he watched Kazuo's attack slam into his chest with an explosion that sent the masked figure tumbling backward. Kuodachi mumbled under his breath, “Shit.” The attack was vicious, but if these were truly ninja, he'd likely still be alive. Kuodachi just hoped that, once the genjutsu was ended, Riku would still be conscious.

As the scene finished out, Kuodachi's attention was immediately grabbed by the approaching Makoto from the tree line. Seems he had an easy enough time with his opponent, with no visible wounds that Kuodachi could pick up on. Samurai in hand, it was clear that Makoto had neutralized the threat. That side was the source of the arrow that lodged into Nobu. Good.

Along with Mokoto's appearance came the shriek from Haruko, spouting a name to what Kuodachi assumed to be the downed previously masked Shinobi. His head would turn, gaze looking over his shoulder toward the carriage to see the young girl still struggling against her mother's grasp. Surely she must know she wasn't about to get through that barrier?

His attention quickly redirected to Makoto as he asked his question. All Kuodachi knew about the question was that Koji was in charge dealing with the third. A quick wave of worry came with the uncertainty. “Not sure. Wanna check?” he noticed Makoto's Byakugan was disengaged, but was not sure if it was due to any inability in the moment. His eyes would be more effective in checking the third's status than Kuodachi running off blindly in the direction he had seen Koji go. Kuodachi was fairly certain Koji would have been able to deal with the third, else Kazuo probably wouldn't have split him up like he had.

… He hadn't expected that. The sudden scream that came from Riku in the seconds before his attack had even hit him. He hadn't had time to adjust the course of his own assault and as a result had wound up almost killing the guy. That… wasn't what he had intended to do at all. He glanced back to the cart and Kuodachi standing beside that glowing blue barrier. The Inuzuka looked back towards where Riku had fallen before he let out a shrill whistle. Koji, who had shifted back into dog form, came bolting from the tree line, blood dripping from his maw. Kazuo scowled at the dog, not even wanting to guess what he had done to the poor bastard that he had been sent to attack.

If he were to go and look, he'd find the man with a drill-shaped hole in his chest the size of a basketball where Koji had ground his claws into the man repeatedly with the use of the Piercing Fang, and his throat gouged out with obvious bite marks around his neck. The Inuzuka sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, walking over to kneel at Riku's side. The first thing he noticed was that while the skin and clothing had burnt away, there was a distinct smell of burning wood, more wooden armour? He looked at the guy's face for the first time, his mask off, and suddenly his frown turned to a scowl. This guy… wore a Konoha forehead protector. It wasn't scarred or marked to signify he had purposely gone rogue, it was worn proudly around his forehead. Kazuo grabbed the guy by his collar and roughly lifted him up, leaning down to his neck and inhaling deeply.

He recognized the scent, if only vaguely. He had smelt it around the village and years ago in the Academy. The girl, Haruko, screaming the name reminded Kazuo of something. He leant back and stared at the teenager a little longer before he suddenly bared his teeth and growled angrily. "Senju fucking Riku." This kid had been in the Academy a year below him. Even back then he was constantly fighting someone, usually his little brother. Kazuo growled deep in the back of his throat. "I swear if you've actually gone rogue and this isn't your usual stupidity, I will kill you right here and now."

Riku groaned, everything across his chest seemed burned away, his core exposed where his heart should have been, and it was charred with the faintest smell of blood. Much more damage and it would have killed him outright, even with his elemental body. He looked up at Kazuo and made an attempt to grin, ending in a small coughing fit. "Not much choice..." he said quietly. "I love her... and that woman... Mami... she claimed I raped her, tried to stop us." His eyes turned towards the carriage a moment where Haruko still struggled against her mother, still stuck in that barrier before he looked up at Kazuo again.

"I just wanted to take her away from here... where we had a chance... without her mother, without my brother..." Riku had spent so much time training and working towards his goals of a shinobi, it'd be odd to hear the boy professing some kind of romeo and juliet love for a girl, especially one like Haruko who clearly had no training or experience herself. She was a girl who would be completely helpless without someone around to protect her. "I even... did this, just so I could protect her out here..." he added, reaching up the hand not affected by the genjutsu to tap the charred wood of his chest.

[Mission] Oh that pretty floral bonnet...

Makoto nodded and (with a slight wince of effort) reactivated his Byakugan. It did not take long for the Hyuuga to locate the third member of the ill-fated ambush, and when he did his gaze did not linger more than an instant. Makoto's ocular veins retreated back into his temples, and he was forced to steady himself against the cart as a violent fit of shivering set in. The man's chest had been destroyed, his throat a bloody ruin, as inflicted by the Inuzuka's mutt. Or a hundred crows. His thoughts escaped him, and suddenly his mind's eye was flooded with images of that day: a couple crushed by falling debris, a crow pecking the eyes from a nurse's corpse, a hallway of fire and charred flesh, of fire and smoke, stifling him, choking him, killing him.

Without warning or reason, the cough returned, and he went from leaning lightly on the cart to regain his balance, to placing the majority of his weight on it as he bent over double, hacking up a storm. It took a full half minute for the assault on his respiration to abate, at which time he shakily brought himself to his full height and removed his hand from the carriage. Not that he had fully recovered; his throat burned, his stomach roiled, his heart thrashed against his chest, and he simply could not stop shivering, no matter how hard he tried. Trying to keep his breathing steady, he turned and sat on the side of the carriage. So occupied by his episode, he had completely missed the last exchange between Riku and Kazuo; his two partners would have to handle the situation themselves, at least for the moment.

Just as Makoto was activating his Byakugan, the question was answered with the appearance of a blood covered Koji. Kuodachi couldn't help but grimace at the sight. He could only imagine what condition the third was in. Of course, the image caused him to shudder as he stepped off in the direction of Kazuo who was moving to inspect Riku. As Kuodachi moved out to the side of the two, Kuodachi saw the oddness in the damage done to the figure, as if he were made of wood. Then came words from Kazuo and coughing from Makoto. The words were suggesting a familiarity between Kazuo and Riku as well as Riku being of the Senju clan of Konoha.

Furthermore, the slight explanation from Riku caused a scoff of disgust to bellow forth from Kuodachi, but he would keep any words he wanted to say to himself, choosing to let Kazuo do the talking. This was not something Kuodachi would normally do, as Kazuo was far too brash, but given his familiarity, it seemed appropriate.

Kuodachi's attention would be drawn to the coughing fit after it went on for longer than would be expected of coughing. “Makoto. You okay?” He'd speak just loud enough for the Hyuuga to hear when his coughing started to tone down. Kuodachi would give a few final words to Kazuo, “Tie him up when you are done,” before pulling a roll of wire from his back pouch and tossing it to the Inuzuka. Following the words, he would walk towards Makoto to investigate further. As he came closer, he would speak in softer words, “You don't look so well. You need some water or something?” As soon as Makoto was not using the barrier to lean on, Kuodachi would make a single seal and allow the barrier to vanish.

Kazuo stared at the Senju confessing his story with nothing more than a blank look. When he was finally done, with the rap to his chest, Kazuo 'tapped' him on the head, rapping his knuckles against the top of his skull hard enough to bruise. Well bruise a normal person. If this guy was made entirely of wood then he didn't even know if he could bruise. "You aren't the sharpest tool in the shed, are ya? You attack three fully trained Chuunin, abandon your morals as a Konoha shinobi and try to fight your comrades, over some bullshit trashy romance novel story?" Kazuo punched him again, this time hard enough to make Kazu wince and shake out his hand. "Moron. That's all I've got to say to you. That and I'll be dragging your ass back to Konoha by your damn ankles."

Snatching the wire out of the air that Kuodachi threw, Kazuo made sure he had Riku firmly in his grasp before he started to bind his hands behind his back. Koji was right there as well, bloodied maw and all, growling at the Senju in case he got any kind of stupid ideas. He was tempted to hogtie him and literally drag him back to Konoha by his ankles but they still had a mission to complete. He stood up and rolled his shoulders, looking down at Riku with a final shake of his head before dragging him to his feet. If he was still alive after that last attack because of whatever he had done to himself, then he could walk under his own power.

He shoved him roughly in front of him and started walking back towards the group, keeping a wary on the Senju's hands in case he tried something. "Look guys, I caught me an idiot." He glanced at Makoto and his face morphed into one of mild concern. Had he been injured in taking out the samurai? The only blood he could smell was from the Senju though.
