[Plotboard] The Boring Bits

[Plotboard] Muddy Fixing Aina slung the simple looking pack over her shoulder, detesting this part of her new role. It still didn't feel right when she sat in what had once been Kawa's office in Mamorinuku, and not just because paperwork was never the man's strong suit and she still couldn't find anything half the time. It still felt surreal, she felt like he was going to show up at any moment now and toss her bodily out of the window.

Again.

The memory of course brought a chuckle to the bannin's lips as she gathered the necessary files and added them to the pack, careful not to put them near the pair of water canteens she had put in it and careful to keep the rations wrapped up away from everything too. Even in the pack, Aina was a stickler for keeping things in their place. She frowned into it even as she realized this was all just going to get jumbled during the trip, but she pushed the thought aside and closed it up as she heard footsteps. Hopeful it would be the man she was waiting for she spoke without hardly looking up. "Sorry to drag you along, it should be a pretty boring trip." she said, unaware of how wrong she was going to be. "Should be a routine inspection, but I want someone along. Second pair of eyes always helps."

Fanho walked as his feet clacked in the halls of the Mamorinuku headquarters. It was a weird melancholy feeling, remembering how he almost had his ass handed to him by Shikari to just become a Juuin. Now trusted with the seat of leading the Katameru division, which was heralded by the late Kawa. Then again, he was the only member capable of advanced fuuinjutsu, able to seal peoples chakra away, and prevent them from speaking. His promotion to Specialist Jounin helped him, but none-the-less it sent him into overdrive with responsibilities of ANBU, Mamorinuku, and his daily Specialist Jounin duties.

With Takeo as the Hokage, he lessened some of Fanho's day to day mundane Spec. Jounin work, but it was still taxing to be running all over the village tasked with stuff. However he felt more at home with Mamorinuku, being in the public eye doing good, wanting to be looked up to as a prospective candidate for some young kid's hero. It was reassuring he was doing a good job, and just made him feel damn good about where he was in life. It made him comfortable. Here is where I need to be in life. Albeit being ANBU was a thrill, and it assisted the village. Fanho didn't believe in hiding behind the mask, he believed strength should be built with others in light to show what can be accomplished. Not hidden behind a special tactics squad specializing in stealth tactics to hide in the dark and do dirty work.

Yet, it was a necessary thing even Fanho acknowledged was necessary. But for him, it wasn't his style. He wanted to show the villagers what it meant to be a shinobi of the leaf by doing what was necessary and what was right, in his way. By the time his thoughts were being wrapped up he arrived at Aina's office as he leaned up in the doorway. "I mean that's what my new job entails right? Making sure everything stays in tip top shape. Although its a little weird to lead along a Bannin, and be over some Jounin." As he slipped his hands into his pockets, he began recalling the mission briefing he received on his desk earlier. "You know, I think the better question is. When have things ever been routine?"

With a shrug, and an adjustment of his shoulder bag packed with his own goodies. He glanced over his shoulder down the hall as the general staff walked around with paper work before a grim look took his face of despair. With a slight groan he turned his head back towards Aina. "Let's get out of here before one of the secretaries and interns put paperwork on my desk. I'd rather be in the field than in a stuffy office."

Aina chuckled a bit as she gathered the last of the papers and Fanho remarked about his new position. "It's only weird if you think its rank that matters." she mentioned as she put them in her pack and closed it up, finally turning her head to look at him. "I prefer someone who has the mind for it than someone who has the rank for it any day." she added. It probably wasn't the first time she'd said it, and probably wouldn't be the last either. Finding people to fill the appropriate positions had been the hardest part of taking over, especially as she still couldn't reach Shikari. She hadn't heard back from her as of late, and it occurred to Aina that she'd hardly seen her since Kawa's death regardless.

'I need to check in on her myself soon...'

She sighed as she pulled the pack on and walked towards Fanho, moving to close the doors behind her once they were both outside of her office. "Let's just say I'm hoping it stays routine this time." she told him as she did so, outright laughing as he mentioned trying to escape before mysterious paperwork showed up. "It'd be a miracle if it found you up here, I swear Kawa must have been allergic to it. I can only find about half the reports I should have from that outpost, much less others." She sighed again as she spoke, partly because of the mention of Kawa. It didn't get any easier moving on in her life without her mentor, no matter how many days had passed.

Fanho gave a chuckle in tandem. After all she was right, it was weird to think rank was the only thing that mattered, especially when Bannin's we're led by the Jounin Aoi. Then again skill, experience, wisdom, and heart played a large part in the leadership roles around Konoha rather than pure rank. Outright strength wasn't a resource that was valued as much as skill, experience, wisdom, and heart. Especially with a village with such brotherly love as Konoha. "I think that's a fair assessment, its not all bad checking on the village defenses and outposts. Plus being one of the few experienced in Fuuinjutsu, its kinda fun learning about the different stuff and devising new stuff."

He smirked as Aina laughed about the paperwork. Truth be told, it was the main thing Fanho begrudgingly hated about his new leadership roles. The amount of paper beyond paperwork necessary about every little nick, and flicker in a village defense. It was tiresome, almost so he was tempted to get a secretary to handle it, however he didn't wish it on anyone else. So as an alternative, shadow clones made pretty quick work of it. Although the headache of it all rushing back was nauseating. "Allergic or terminal illness of not filing his taxes and any other paperwork that may concern him? As far as I can tell, this outpost is the only one consistently missing a report or so unlike the others which send reports often and back-up reports when the original one doesn't make it." Dog eat dog world, sometimes the messenger pigeons didn't make it.

Fanho walked through the halls of Mamorinuku with Aina has they strolled towards the front doors. For a Hyuuga he noticed she was pretty short. At least shorter by four inches, enough to see clear over the top of her head. Then again for a seventeen year old, Fanho was pretty mature, and had the maturity of a late twenty year old. Not only that but the humor of a kid. Which at times came in handy for the young Katameru head."So any idea on what might be bothering the outpost? It hasn't sent a report in weeks, almost a month now. And last report said there were several leaks, and a crack in a wall next to a mud pit due to the western muddy wetlands."

As Fanho mused on the issues the outpost could be facing, Aina couldn't help a frown. "Honestly... I have no idea. And that is what's worrying me." she told him as they walked out of the building and headed for the village's exit. She paused momentarily as they passed a food stall bought a small pack of steamed buns, offering one to Fanho before they continued on again. The woman couldn't help it, for some reasons he had always been a sucker for the steam buns with that sweat red bean paste in the middle. "Last time I checked on an outpost like this, it was with Yoru." She told him with a sigh.

"I think I was a Special Jounin? Maybe fresh Jounin... I don't remember. But it was hell. The outpost had been wiped out by this... person. They could take on the appearance and talents of shinobi they touched." She shook her head as she remembered the chaos, and how scared she had been when she had thought it was Yoru attacking her. "I think it even took memories, it was hell for Yoru and I, trying to figure out what was going on."

She shook her head again as she bit into a steamed bun, silently hating even remembering what had happened. There had been more than just fear in it for her when everything had been said and done. When the thing had looked like Yoru it had walked right back into the village, if she remembered correctly...

Fanho gave a nod. It worried him as well. It was a pretty pressing issue as well, especially if the two of them were going to investigate. However it was probably best it was the two of them, than anyone else. If anything went wrong it probably wasn't anything outside of manageable. "Why not?" Fanho gave a shrug and a smile at the offering of a bun. It'd be a nice treat to set the trip ahead of them. He listened as she continued on reminiscing about the last time she had performed a check-up, which would've been during his time as a genin.

As she continued the idea of a shape shifting enemy, that made it nearly non-discernible friend from foe was frightening. He gave a sigh as he thought of what he would do in that situation, and now he would probably work it out as the same as those two did when they first encountered it. But as a genin? He could only imagine how overwhelmed he would be. "I was still just a genin around that time. Its really hard to imagine how fast time flies by. But, I'm sure it wasn't anything you two couldn't handle. Hell, you're both easily the two strongest Bannin, maybe even a match for Takeo." He gave a shrug realizing that the two were just Jounin around that time.

"Well even as Jounin, I'm sure you guys had it under control. But I can only imagine the strength you guys had to pull to beat 'em." Fanho pulled up the last report from the outpost scanning it over. It was scattered brained, and not really concentrated in thought to make much sense. The only thing he could imagine would be an immense anxiety inducing opponent. One that didn't fight directly, but tried to focus on slowly whittling away the psyche. With the physical damage being done to the outpost, it seemed it was using the repairs to make them feel as if they were losing their minds. Fanho would look as if he was in deep thought gritting his teeth ever so patiently.

"It was hell." Aina admitted. "It's always hell to fight your closest companions, even if it turns out in the end that it wasn't them at all. The image sticks with you." The woman added with a sigh, finishing off the first sweet bun as they arrived at the village exit. She couldn't help wrinkling up her nose at their transport. It was a simple carriage, wooden with no sort of decoration to make it stand out too much. She'd always hated taking a carriage anywhere, any form of transport other than her own two feet she simply detested. But she still had information and paperwork to go over with Fanho and only a carriage would allow for it. Anything else would cause the wind to sweep away their paperwork.

Aina glanced at the driver with a simple nod as she climbed in and waited for Fanho to do the same. Once the door was closed she pulled down a board that turned into a table between them before placing the files before her. "Here's a layout of the outpost." she remarked, passing him a paper. "It hasn't been updated in a couple years but for the most part it should hold true. We should check the main supports for each building, and if anything has changed we'll use that paper to mark those changes."

She laid out a few other papers before sighing and leaning back in the seat with a slight grimace, a hand on her stomach. It was her first task since she'd had the twins, and Bannin or not the woman sometimes could almost still feel the weight of them in her belly. She shook her head and rubbed her temple. "Those are the only reports I have... nothing from the past six months." she told him with a sigh. "Not even requests for provisions... which really doesn't bode well..."

Fanho nodded as Aina elaborated about her fight. It would be hard to fight someone you loved and cared about, trying to overcome the natural inhibitor of love of them to persevere. Not only that but Fanho had his own experience in which him and Zakuro had to fight each other due to a genjutsu user fooling them into thinking they were enemies. As the carriage bumped around it was still a safe bastion to prevent wind or other elemental factors from interfering with their work. The big plus was they didn't have to walk, it was a nice little break from the usual jumping from tree to tree or running.

"Seems relatively basic, nothing that stands out. However the area and their maintenance reports align. With the swamps and the leaks it makes me think there might be fowl play?" The young Jounin rubbed his chin as he grinded his teeth lightly in thought. He glazed over the blue prints and map of the surrounding area before furrowing his eye brows. "Considering they fell out of communications this date shortly after the leaks, I chalk it up to some form of a doton or mud style user. Although there isn't a whole lot to go off of, we only have so much intel considering were one of the first teams to investigate."

Fanho tapped the main entrance of the outpost as he leaned on the table propping his head up with his hands. "My shadow clone will enter here so it can observe and report back without any risk of damage to us. We can hang out on the perimeter to keep over watch to intervene. Anything it sees even if it gets wrecked, it'll report back. Plus if there's anyone there a friendly face from the front will be more welcoming than sneaking around."

Aina remained as she was, leaning back in her seat and pinching the bridge of her nose as she listened to Fanho's input on what their plan of approach should be. She thought it over, releasing the bridge of her nose before finally nodding and sitting up again with another sigh. "Sounds like a plan." She replied. "In case of anything hostile, I won't send in a clone immediately. I'll stay with you. They'll think there's only one of us, no sense showing our hand before we know more about what we might be facing." she added, looking down at the map spread out between them before lifting her white eyes to look at Fanho once more.

"But don't get too tunnel-visioned on it being a shinobi." Aina added, shaking her head briefly. "It could be a shinobi problem, a bandit problem, a spirit problem, or just shit-ass luck." She chewed on her lower lip, remembering a spirit that Yoru and Takeo had been forced to save her from once. The thing had nearly husked her, and in the process had revealed her relationship to Takeo. At the time it had been a secret, and naturally it had angered Yoru to hear about it. It had nearly destroyed the friendships between the three of them, just as the spirit had hoped in order to use such chaos as a distraction.

But in the end it hadn't worked, and Yoru and Takeo had managed to save her. Piecing friendships back together had come later. "There are a lot of wild cards at play here. We need to try and see what they are before we act."
