Getting special; Inuzuka, Masami recruitment

Post by Legacy » Sun Sep 17, 2017 1:57 am

Steel slammed against steel and the sparks of ambition and resolve flew astray; labored breaths mixed with grunts of effort and perspiration soaked the marble tile flooring as two members of the infamous Anbu Black op went at it. One of them, a tall brown haired Shinobi, couldn't hide his fatigue even from beyond the mask as his stance began to lapse exposing gaps in his defenses that otherwise wouldn't have been there. In context, this member had been deemed insubordinate by his peers but thanks to the ever fair methods of another operative, his opponent & Buntaicho of Katana division, the man had been given a trial by combat to make his voice heard above the rest. Just from appearances, one would question why exactly the taller man had been struggling whereas his Silver-haired opponent ascertained perfect composure and used more precise strikes as well. Truth be told, the taller man eclipsed the shorter Captain in age and experience but when matched against what appeared to be complex applications of simple techniques, the masked Buntaicho had the man beat. "Bringing that...that thing into the force isn't a call that I can agree with, Buntaicho." He'd known. They'd all known about the secret that Takeo had tried to keep from them, from the Captain of Katana squad personally. It had all started started roughly three months ago; before the incident with Zakuro, before the fiasco in Fur country.

Flash back (referrence thread)

Back then...the Hokage had revealed the identity of one Genma to Katana division's Buntaicho but made the unfortunate or fortunate mistake of slipping up dangling the reality of two Jinchuuriki living in the same village before Uoza which resulted in quite the information gathering hunt on his behalf. From observing the suspected host during joint assignments where his specialties were required to even holding idle conversation, eating and drinking out together, playing town house games all in an effort to place himself closer to the truth. That was....until that Manila folder landed on his desk.
Three weeks prior; Tuesday morning approx 5:45am His bones ached and every muscle in his body may as well have shouted for help with each forward step toward the near vacant Office, his office, near the main hall of ANBU's underground headquarters. He an another operative had just returned from hunting three Rogue Chunin level Shinobi who'd proven themselves to be more trouble than initially anticipated. One such missing ninja had been processed and put in custody within the hour while the other two were likely being devoured by crows and maggots where their bodies had been left to decompose....or rather, where Uoza had seared their bodies to a crisp. One of his few lapses in emotional stability had cost two criminal minded ninja their lives but - in his defense, the Captain had tried reason at some point during the skirmish. Alas, he yearned only to sit and replenish his reserves after such a strenuous assignment but found something more when he'd turned the knob to his office and walked in. There, smack dab in the center of the wooden desk, was a manila folder with the Kanji for "TOP SECRET" writted along the spine. "Top Secret, eh? Right. Must be from him..." Takeo had a way of keeping him busy these days and frankly, Uoza hated the trouble. But as duty bound and conscious as he was, Uoza still took the time out to go over the file since someone had taken the liberty to make sure it got to him. "New Candidate, well that's nice. Wait...is this? It can't be?!"

Sore, tired, irritated, none of these things mattered before the Captain as he felt as if the weight of the world had been plummeted on to his shoulders. Stirring from his seat immediately the file in his hand suddenly erupted in a ball of flames. As he stood and hurried out the door the last words on the file to be seen were:

URGENT: SPECIAL CANDIDATE FOR ANBU DUE FOR CONSIDERATION
HOST TO ATURASU NO SOUGENMA; INUZUKA, MASAMI

Present day approximately 2:59PM "I want you all on standby just in case things don't go as planned but otherwise don't interfere. This won't be your average recruitment...." Uoza had advised a handful of operatives before hand and now that they were not to get involved almost no matter what took place here, roughly twelve miles outside the village where Valley and rivers intertwined as one, flora and fauna were common place but the distraction of mortal chatter was not. There would be nothing to get in the way out here - everything was perfect. There'd been an operative who Uoza had tasked with a very important duty; in all senses of the meaning, the operative was to literally become "Mitsurugi,Gene" down to the scent which of course a certain silver-haired ninja assisted with. "Gene" was then beaten or rather, made to look as though he'd been beaten within an inch of his life and tied tightly to a tree. Around the same time the Inuzuka compound would have received a delivery from Yoru, Gene's own personal Summon that the boy had been in a bind and that there was no time to explain the finer details. All that had been mentioned was a location, a brief note requesting aid and a special request not to get either Takeo, Aina or Yoru involved. Something about being troublesome....regardless, the lead was not a hard one to follow for someone of Masami's character and intellect; the true challenge however , would begin once she'd arrived to the scene.

If the woman had followed the instructions carefully, she would eventually be led to "Gene's" location wherein only the boy tied to a tree unconscious could be found. Stripped of all ninja tools, it would appear as though someone got the best of the boy. Meanwhile, Uoza watched from the shadows just waiting to make his move. Naturally, throughout the duration of his little stunt he would not engage her as himself. His hair was brown and his height was an inch or two higher than normal but everything else remained the same. Oh! Except for the fact that he wore nothing that could/would identify him as Gene on his person. Behind the veil of a strangely designed ANBU mask he took great care to not expose himself. First he would evaluate her deductive reasoning abilities, then her ability to make quick and unhindered decisions. All in due time.

Masami was on a mad dash through the village, some part of her being noticably tense after the note that she had received, for a number reasons really. She knew that she really should tell someone regardless of what her instructions had been, the woman even now having difficulty not backtracking and convincing someone to come with her. There were a large number of inherent risks that came with going alone while following a strange note, especially for one such as her. It wasn't that she doubted that it actually had come from Gene himself but rather, she couldn't help but wonder why it had been sent to her specifically, rather than someone like Aina or Yoru. There was no way that he would know about Aturasu so her status as a Jinchuuriki couldn't possibly have come into play, and as for the skills that she possessed, there were several people who could likely do better than her.

Oh well, she was always happy to help out a friend in need, and it wasn't like she could blame him for wanting to avoid the situation becoming troublesome. If it could be resolved easily then she would be happy too.

Anyways, she soon arrived at the clearing, ears and nose instinctively twitching, and the sensation causing her to freeze for a moment, frowning. Something was wrong here.. It wasn't just the sight of her friend beaten and tied to a tree that worried her, but rather.. something seemed off. There were two identical scents. One coming from right in front of her, and another from somewhere in the tree line. Of course someone could be trying to throw her off, or someone could be watching her, but either way she couldn't just leave the situation be.

Slowly she approached the person whom she assumed to be Gene, all the while keeping her nose and ears active and at the ready, intently listening for anything out of place, ready and willing to draw her weapon at any point. After all, she had been taught that for any shinobi, but particularly for those trained in assassination, there was no room for hesitation. Though there was always the chance that she was walking into a trap, so remaining vigiliant was key.

The time waiting for Masami to arrived had been spent with careful consideration and preparation; Uoza was more than aware of her keen sense of smell, realizing that if he were simply to hide she'd be able to sniff him out in an instant. Putting a look alike right in front of her face would do nothing to fool the woman's nose...so the Captain put his scent everywhere. Distinguishing a location by scent was easy enough for someone of her magnitude but what about if there was no distinction? What if the scent came from various places at once? "Gene" struggled to lift his head as if the limb weighed a ton, his vocals strained seemingly from having been hit in the throat. "...Ma..Masami....Trap." Barely above a whisper and rugged sounding due to the strained chords, Gene could muster no more will as his head suddenly dropped, a small package of blood being crushed inside his mouth only to ooze from beyond his Teeth. From the outside looking in it would have appeared that Gene had taken his last breath right before Masami's eyes. His vital signs were...gone.

Meanwhile, the Buntaicho watched with prying eyes. Never before had he witness someone lie so skillfully, it was both inspiring and worrisome to consider such Shinobi existed in this world. However, what was even more inspiring was the fact that immediately following her arrival to the scene Masami's guard hadn't dropped. Frankly, he wouldn't have been surprised if she could see through his little ruse but dared not place faith on a whim; Uoza knew that human emotion was a strange thing and more often than not, drove people to do even stranger things. Deductive reasoning an analytical thinking were two difficult components on their own. But an ANBU operative would be required to exercise both components quickly while in high stress scenarios. Truth be told, every operative had been worried about Uoza's method for this exact reason; a Jinchuuriki under high stress was never a good outcome in normal experiences, their temperament towards chaotic behavior on a whim was too great. In order to silence all doubt indefinitely this was the only way to clear Masami of such suspicions. Besides, there was something he wanted to prove for himself as well.

No sooner had the make-shift Gene's final words been uttered did a Kunai come soaring from beyond the trees toward Masami's location. Its trajectory was such that if she made the mistake of moving too quickly then "Gene would end up taking steel to the neck - a realization that she would need to come to grips with quickly if she were to act accordingly. It was evident that the plan had been to lure her out away from the village, away from people who could brave some of the risks in a situation doomed only to grow perpetually worse as time continued to turn. But it'd been far too late to regret not using a Shadow clone now; splitting through clouds of green were blades of black rain, washing down in a wide arc toward the tree where the two awaited. Extreme...maybe, but Uoza believed that if the woman could not overcome an obstacle this small then facing the problems of Fire country and potentially the world, would be like placing an ant hill to a mountain.

Could she think on her toes? Would she abandon a comrade on suspicion and instead safe her own life? Uoza wanted to know just what kind of person Masami was.

Masami was very much worried that she had walked right into a trap, not to mention she found it weird that the same scent was surrounding her in in every direction, but she wasn't about to let that deter her. With her guard up all the while, she approached 'Gene' and drew one of her knives, cleaving through the ropes holding the boy to the tree, her nose and ears still trained on her surroundings all the while ,in hopes of detecting something beyond the scent that assaulted her from all directions.

She was admittedly surprised when she heard the look-alike speak, pausing for just a brief moment before moving to pull on the now weakened ropes, soon hearing a satisfying snap, it bringing a small smile to her face. A smile that just as quickly vanished as she finally turned her attention on the boy's physical state. He had looked simply beat up before but now.. he didn't even seem to be breathing, and didn't seem to have any vital signs... For a moment the realization that the boy was possibly.. gone was a shocking one, though there was no time to grieve right now. After all, there was still the great possibility that this was a trap. Of course she was angry and sad at the thought of having lost a friend but she had to stay composed for right now. Trap or not, she had a feeling that they weren't alone, a fact soon confirmed as she picked up on a sound that while faint, was very much out of place in an area such as this.

"Now.. to take care of our guest." she whispered, ears twitching as they picked up on the whizzing of a kunai.. no, several kunai. And they were headed directly towards her and 'Gene'. Of course, why else would she have been called out alone? Some part of her had been hoping that maybe she was just paranoid, but once again her isntincts had proved right. Some part of her wished she had sent in a clone to investigate, but it was far too late for that. More important now was protecting both herself and Gene. Even if he was dead, and even if she had been led into a trap, she wasn't about to ditch an ally, she having plenty of methods to protect the both of them.

Just as soon as she heard the sound, she quickly began forming hand seals, grabbing Gene and pulling him close as her hair lengthened, forming a makeshift cocoon to hopefully deflect the incoming projectiles, if not completely knock them away, she all the while waiting for an opportunity to make her move.

And so it was, the storm of Kunai rained down upon them showering hues of green with a sea of black. Trees were as targets and so too, were the unfortunate pair. Violently a maelstrom of Kunai impacted and bounced off Masami's Cocoon of chakra hardened hair, apparently she had trained well. Uoza gave her points for quick thinking and even quicker action but the battle was far from over. Masked by the sound of a hundred Kunai knifes thudding and sticking in various places, Uoza weaved his signs. With her view temporarily obstructed by her own hair as well as the fact that Uoza had not emerged from hiding, it would have been difficult to ascertain his movements but there could be no mistaking the brightly burning hue of orange and heat getting closer and closer to her position. The flames came close and closer, but upon getting closer the ring of fire abruptly expanded outward and upwards searing the ground as well as causing great collateral damage as fires fanned by wind began to spread.

She'd used a technique that served its purpose but failed at providing a solution to another problem. At times, forming a solution in one's head was easy enough but carrying them out would be another story. This was one of those moments. Any logical Shinobi in Masami's situation would have attempted to put as much distance between themselves and the enemy as possible but when that alleged enemy employed trap and preventive style Jutsu then what? A wounded man on the verge of losing their life, behind enemy lines and ill-prepared. These were the kinds of situations that ANBU lived for. Like before, only critical thinking and decisive action would save her from this bind.

Meanwhile, the culprit had finally shown himself. Dropping silently from the tree line in a crouched position the design of a water sign reflected back toward the Inuzuka clan member. Uoza spoke no words raised his right hand in the half ram seal; if and when she made her move, in whatever form, Katana squad's Buntaicho would be ready. ...Give it your all, Masami. True enough he'd been conflicted about his true stance on the matter but Uoza believed in equal opportunity even if that meant putting up with a bitter taste in his mouth. Besides, thus far she'd showed promise. He wanted to see more.

Of course Masami hadn't been simply idling by while sitting in her cocoon, the girl forming another set of handseals as her cocoon was impacted first by a storm of kunai, and then destroyed by a burst of flame, one which it became very clear, had inflicted a great deal of damage on the surrounding area, and even still continuing to burn, as well as serving as a prison. Of course she should have thought about such a possibility, and some part of her cursed herself for not having thought ahead, but there wasn't much to be done about it now. She just had to think of a means of escaping, and she needed to do so somewhat quickly as her opponent had just shown himself.

However, she didn't have many options for her escape, though there was one. She absolutely hated using this technique, especially in her current state, but she had no choice. In her entire arsenal, just this one technique would serve to help her out, as she couldn't brute force her way through a dome of fire. Well she probably could, but not without taking damage in return, so that wasn't really an option. Letting out a quiet sigh, she performed a series of handseals, as a result lowering down to all fours as her eyes became little more than slivers and her nails became more claw-like.

Now it was time to make her escape, and loath as she was to do it, she would have to leave Gene behind for now as there wasn't really a way to take him with her in her current state. Letting out another, internal, sigh, she whirled her body into a drill-like mass, tunneling through the earth and heading directly towards their attacker, hopefully popping up right underneath him to deliver an impact with her technique.

The flames of his technique danced and howled in blissful harmony reflecting an image of both great beauty and destruction. Skipping across branches with ease fanned by an ever present breeze whole trees caught ablaze. Burnt dirt and grass among other things could be smelled for miles out but Uoza cared little for that now, they'd been far enough away from the village and its travel points that no one would come into harms way. Any doubts held about the young Captain's own skill level at this point were sure to be silenced leaving the embers of his will to remind them all of what he'd been capable of. But Katana squad's Buntaicho focused on something else; it was as if the woman had simply given up from beyond the veil of flames, it wasn't like Masami. What are you planning now, Masami? Uoza thought to himself, bringing his hands together in the ram hand seal in order to focus his chakra.

To his surprise however, the opportunity to perform Jutsu had come and gone. It would have appeared that his senses had failed him, how else could he have missed the sound of rumbling underneath his feet? Only when the ground began to rise did Uoza's instincts kick into high gear; in a pivot & leap combination the disguised Shinobi ascended quickly but grounded even quicker just ten meters left of where he had once been before in a gliding slide to a full stop. There was something...off about Masami's appearance now..She looked, primal almost. "That must be the Inuzuka style taijutsu, nifty indeed. Unfortunately it won't make a difference." From beyond the porcelain mask a voice sharp and laced with poison resounded forward. "That boy is going to die and you will become my prisoner." Taking a hold of the handle of his Ninjato the masked Shinobi took a glance over at where he'd left his operative. The operative was still alive of course and unharmed, but the fact that he had to be abandoned in order for the woman to fight concerned him. Worst case scenario, while she'd been busy with him someone else could have stolen the corpse and subsequently - valuable village secrets. On the other hand, the fact that she had been able to escape herself meant that provided she could survive the encounter, she'd be the one to return with a report. Abandoning a comrade might have been frowned upon but Gene - Uoza, valued efficiency over all else. If one branch of a tree was to grow weak it would weaken the tree as a whole; similarly, if one Shinobi were to somehow get captured during a mission that Shinobi has placed his comrades lives & the lives of his people at great risks. You made a call that wouldn't have been easy for most, nice.

Uoza placed his left foot shoulder length apart and ahead of his right, bent both knees and brought his left arm up to the handle of his Ninjato where the hands danced rhythmically waiting to deliver a serenade of death. Because it would have given him away immediately, Uoza did not utilize his Toryu fighting style. To do so combined with his proficiency at close quarters ninjutsu would have immediately given away his identy thus, the improvisation. So long as he could anticipate the woman's moves he could act and react accordingly but to be on the safe side, the Buntaicho would make use of his lack of fear to close the deal should the need arise. In order to combat a foe like the one before her, Masami would need more than just great analytical and deductive skills, she would need a burning resolve that fit into her combative style. It was time to test her will to protect those in need.

This guy definitely wasn't to be underestimated, Masami definitely was beginning to realize that. Not only was he seemingly capable of pulling out high level techniques with relative ease, he had even dodged her attack with the same amount of ease. The Four Legged state definitely wasn't the proper means of fighting him, and so with a deep breath she cancelled the technique, the woman feeling a sense of relief as the primal feeling that she had been overcome with while the technique had been active was now all but gone. She loved feeling connected with nature, but that sort of primality was just offputting. It was almost as if she really had become a beast and she didn't like that feeling at all.

She chose not to respond to the man's taunting, though it did agravate her that he seemed to be so very sure of himself. Still though she said nothing, instead silently drawing an explosive tagged kunai out of her pouch and threw it towards her target's center, detonating it once it came within half a meter of its destination. She normally wasn't one to use the few explosives that she carried on her person, often feeling them unnecessary, but this was a special occasion, and she had an idea. From his stance, she could assume that he was skilled at close quarters combat, though at that same note, so was she. She however prided herself on her ability to end fights quickly and decisively, and in this case she was going to do just that, though she had no plans of killing him. No... there was a good chance that there were still others in wait, and she planned on leaving him alive, to beat the information out of him if she had to.

As soon as the explosion went off, she flew into a set of handseals, dashing forward and keeping her ears trained on him, waiting for him to dodge even as as an orb of light formed in her hand. If her plan worked, the explosion would at least serve as a deterrent or a distraction and once she had an assessment of his location, she would launch the orb, it upon contact exploding in a burst of light and hopefully blinding her opponent, even if temporarily, and even better, hopefully inflicting some damage.

Just as I expected from someone who trained along side Aina...Masami's quick and resourceful, too. Hiding underground and attacking from my blind spot...looks like I'm in for a fight. That look in her eyes, even though he'd been a comrade behind the fiasco right now he was an enemy and frankly, that intense glare of hers was just a little off putting. It hadn't moved him, as few things did. But Uoza took notice and wondered for a moment if whether or not the council had been thinking when they'd made their choice. Or perhaps...the reports had all been a fluke and the girl didn't actually possess the Genma spirit within her. No, otherwise that file wouldn't have come across his desk. ...Hm? Masami was...reverting back to her original state? Just what had she been planning now?

Granted she'd been standing a few paces away, in front of him, Uoza didn't need to guess what her next move was going to be. When her limb sprung into motion so too did the masked Buntaicho. Matching her own Kunai mid-flight had been one of the masked Shinobi's inventory, the two blades met dead center of the two Shinobi to which then Uoza had noticed the orange tag wrapped around the handle of her own. Of course! Judging from her facial expression alone, it had been clear to him that Masami was on the path to regaining what bit of her composure had been lost in the initial attack. Pretty soon, he imagined, she would become progressively more aggressive. After all, she had used the entrapment Katon technique he'd put in play to trap her against him in an instant. There'd been only one feasible option if he were to maintain the upper hand in this battle, he would need to retreat. When (and if) the Kunai Masami had thrown detonated Uoza would have pivoted on his dominant foot away from the bright light of the explosion. However, its after effects had been within close enough range to still propel his body forward - a force of motion that the young Prodigy used to his advantage being ahead of the blast. He'd be thrust into the tree line and luckily close enough to a thick tree that he could have some protection from the shrapnel sent blowing around.

As for Masami, dashing forward toward an explosion may not have been the best of strategies. In her haste to strike, the woman had placed herself directly in harm of being pelted by Kunai chunks blown asunder. Whether or not this would have any real affect on her offensive game plan however, was yet to be determined. Uoza on the other hand, wasted little time in recollecting his train of thought as well as taking a moment to consider what his next move would be. Admittedly, this would have been the perfect opportunity to use his Shadow clones but in the event that the woman did allow the Genma to break free...he wanted to make sure that he was ready. You've succeeded in pushing your enemy back but they're still out there watching, waiting. What will you do now, Masami? Working along side the Shinobi within Mamorinuku, Uoza had learned a considerable amount about tracking and hunting; specifically, the ability to mask his presence entirely so as to leave no traces of his existence in an area. He'd slowed his breathing and eventually lowered his heart rate with focus while silence accompanied by the sound of burning flames and...breathing, met his ear drums.

The desire to break out various Sensory Ninpou was strong but Uoza knew that to utilize a jutsu within so close a proximity even while actively putting his discipline to use was just bad judgment. Chakra signatures were of the hardest things to hide and frankly, those with a high enough aptitude would have still been able to discover him but from what he had known of the woman, it may have been a slow climb jumping to that particular conclusion. At least, right away anyway. With his presence all but gone, the man would silently skulk about the forest - wanting to see just how far he could get before he'd been caught on to. After all, the plan wasn't to hide forever. The test would remain the same.

After much training and deliberation, Gene has learned how to effectively mask his presence when conducting tasks. This essentially makes him harder to track or be noticed when moving about, a skill that certainly comes in handy with covert operations. Unless by way of a Sensory technique of greater rank (Empathy or otherwise) Character's wouldn't be able to notice his presence.

After some practice Gene has become adept in quelling the noise of his footsteps when walking. On uneven surfaces or places with very little footing he can slip through making almost no sound so long as he remains walking thus, he is harder to detect when sneaking up on his targets.

Getting special; Inuzuka, Masami recruitment

Of course Masami hadn't entirely expected to avoid the consequences of her own attack, bits of shrapnel flying past her and some making an impact against her, though it luckily didn't hurt enough to really impede her in any way.

More important was that her opponent had disappeared, and she couldn't sense him anywhere. Typically her ears could pick up on even the slightest of movements and her nose could pick up on the slightest of smells.. but now there was nothing. For a moment she thought that maybe he had fled the area, but the thought was dismissed just as quickly as it came. There was no way that that was possible. Never once had she seen an opponent flee unless they were severely outclassed, and this was not such a case. And even if that had been the case, they would have surely brought along some form of assistance rather than outright fleeing. No, he was still very much around. Rather than simply running, he was hiding his presence.

She was certain that she could find him though, and it would even be an opportunity to put her nose to good use. Over the course of this fight she had memorized his scent, and now it was time to make use of that knowledge. Letting out a deep breath, she leapt up into the nearest tree and first formed a set of hand seals, forming a shadow clone whom she would send down to the ground, at which point she herself would form another set of seals and gather chakra to her nose, tuning out everything aside from the man's own scent as she smelled around for him, her clone meanwhile having dashed off into the forest, making the appearance of attempting to track him down himself.

~The Sleuth
D Rank Ninjutsu
Dogs are known to be excellent trackers, and the Inuzuka do everything they can to compete with their familiars. In an attempt to mimic their ninken, the Inuzuka member will perform a series of hand seals before channeling chakra to their nose, enhancing their sense of smell. While this isn’t very effective at picking out certain smells, if the user has been in close contact with someone, or has one of their possessions on hand, they will be able to more accurately pinpoint the source of scents that are less than eight posts old as long as aforementioned source is still within one mile of where the scent was originally picked up.

*[Ninjutsu • Shadow Clone Technique]
B-Ranked Ninjutsu
After performing the correct hand seals the user proceeds to create a number of clones of themselves (maximum is equal to 1/3rd the users stamina). Unlike the Clone Technique, these clones are actual copies of the user in both appearance and substance. The user's chakra is evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone an equal fraction of the user's overall power. The clones are capable of performing jutsu on their own and can even bleed, but they will usually disperse after one or two solid blows. The clones will be created in roughly the same condition as the original and any experience the clones gain during their existence is transferred to the user once they are dispersed. Given that the clones are an exact replica of the user, they share the same stats except for stamina, which is determined by the number of clones presently in effect.

Tune Out
D-Ranked Taijutsu Discipline
Through training the user has learned to more easily tune out unnecessary sounds and smells, allowing them to more easily focus on a single target without getting distracted by the area around them.

Getting special; Inuzuka, Masami recruitment

"...Well, I suppose it's only a matter of time now." Gene had dug himself into a pretty deep hole and now one of the village's top hunter Shinobi had been closing in on his trail, vying to either rip his head off or grill him with questions...or both. He wasn't sure if he had truly been ready to face such a demon head on but circumstances considered well - he didn't have a choice. If I'm going to die then it'll be on my terms, thought Gene as he tore the porcelain mask obscuring his face clean off and chucked the damned thing by the river stream. "Phew! That's a lot better, I can really breath again." Looking at the boy now it was almost as if there hadn't been a growling Inuzuka tearing through the forest to get to him; such a reality however grim, was beyond him. Instead, he'd devoted all of his time and energy into building a small camp site with firewood and rocks and of course, a burning flame. Hell, he even had the time to hustle up two large fish and place them aside before Masami's presence could actually be felt again. He wasn't going to hide from her at this point since he'd pretty much all but lost the drive keeping him attached to the task to begin with. Personal grievances aside, he knew Masami well enough to not question her overall skill but for the sake of the men - for the sake of a truth he had learned, she needed to be evaluated.

Officially speaking he had done what was intended of him in giving her some controversy to deal with but reasoned that the bond had not been strong enough to elicit any kind of real emotional response. Gene sighed, had he used Aina or someone like Kazuo then many things might have turned out differently. In fact, anyone else may have did the trick wonderfully - oh well. When and if Masami ever decided to emerge on his location depending on where in the forest she'd come from, she would find a young boy sitting silently on a log humming to himself while watching two cleaned and de-boned fish cook over a hot fire. There were no seasonings to use but unseasoned food was better than no food at all in his opinion. Gene took a deep breath and then looked up to the passing clouds above. Man do you have it easy," he'd say to no one in particular.

It hadn't taken long for Masami to sift through the scents and locate the general direction that her target had headed towards. Oddly enough though it wasn't his own scent that she caught but rather that of fish being cooked. It was very suspicios and she had to wonder what her target was thinking, whether trying to lead her into a trap or underestimating her. Or maybe he was even simply dumb. Either way, she now at least had an idea of where he was and as such leaped out of her perch and dashed into the forest, making sure to keep her steps silent as she did. He had obviously let down his guard and she was going to bring the fight to him, though she still was entirely on guard, ready to attack at the slightest provocation and her senses trained on her surroundings. Her expression was unreadable but in all actuality while she seemed calm on the surface, she was battling a mix of emotions, the most prominent being a feeling of annoyance at this man toying around with her and a great deal of anger at him having hurt one of her friends.

Feeling that she wouldn't need it any longer, she dismissed her clone as she reached the source of the fishy scent. Just on the other side of the shrubbery was the man who had been messing with her this entire time. Something did feel vaguely strange about this entire situation but she shook it off and poised herself to attack as she headed through the final bit of shrubbery.

"There you are you son of a..." she began, a light growl coming through even as she spoke, only to pause in confusion at the sight that she saw, two fish being cooked and a young boy sitting on a log seeming to watch them. What was going on here? Was this a trick? It didn't seem like it but it was still better to be cautious. "What's going on here?" she spoke, still very much on guard and ready to attack at the slightest provocation though she was doing her best not to show it.

There was something about watching two giant fish slow cook over a hot fire that put Gene's mind at ease; granted his timing for such an action may have been a little off, the sentiment in end of itself was nice. Admittedly he hadn't put much thought into what would be said once Masami inevitably found him, letting her process things on her own might have helped the situation but there just was no easy way of diving into dialogue after attacking someone. Or....was there? When the woman had finally arrived (rather loudly at that) Gene hadn't attempted to make any sudden movements. He'd known that more than anything attempting to do too much too soon was dangerous and frankly, losing his life wasn't exactly something he was looking forward to. "There you are you son of a..." Gene peered over his shoulders to where Masami had been standing and then back to the fish still cooking diligently. "Glad you could make it but - I'm afraid you're a bit early. The fish hasn't finished cooking just yet."

In so many words this exchange well...it should have been weird, strange or awkward! But surprisingly, for the young Mitsurugi of Konohagakure it wasn't. Somehow it had been so easy for him to take a laid back approach to what should have been an eerily tense situation; the fact that Masami had found him so quickly was anticipated but she'd done so in almost record time, and even now he'd been willing to bet that she were ready to take his head off at any given moment - yet all he could do was chuckle. "I had hoped you'd take your time sniffing me out but I suppose that was just wishful thinking. Besides, I'm not really cut out for all the thematic nonsense. There are things that you and I have to talk about and trust me, for this ride you might want to take a seat." Gene's tone was firm now but not aggressive in the slightest, he wasn't trying to demand Masami around or even take away her freedom of choice in the matter. Right now, the options available to her were pretty much limitless Gene could only hope that she chose one that could open the door to other hidden truths.

Masami blinked as she recognized the boy as Gene, frowning as he spoke to her. If he really was Gene, then what was the deal with all that stuff that had happened back in the clearing? Question marks could practically be seen floating above her now tilted head as she tried to comprehend the situation. Surely this was a trick right? No, despite everything, there wasn't any reason to be suspicious for the time being at least. He seemed to be genuine enough. However, that didn't mean that she was completely happy with the situation, as she still wanted to rip someone's head off. Assuming that this wasn't a trick, there were still a lot of questions she had to ask about this entire situation, and maybe even beat someone's face in for fucking around with her, though that could still wait until after she heard him out, besides that fish looked tantalizing and surely she could stick around long enough to eat. She would decide what to do afterwards, depending on whatever it was that he really had to say. For now she simply let out a quiet sigh and took a seat on the ground. [color=#FF993F}"Jeez, this day. What is going on around here?"[/color] she mumbled under her breath, speaking to no one in particular for the time being.

After a moment she turned her attention back towards Gene, some part of her wondering whether it would be better to have a calm discussion or just angrily berate him with questions. For now it was probably best to just calm down, and so she did, first taking a deep breath in an attempt to relax herself before speaking.

"Alright, what's going on here? Obviously there's more to this than meets the eye but I can't even begin to guess where this is going." And that was the truth. Even in her state of confusion she still knew that much. She just had no idea what it was that she was about to hear, she just hoped that it was nothing too horrible.

He had to give her points for maturity. Admittedly, if he'd been placed under a similar circumstance in her predicament Gene couldn't say with certainty that he would have handled things so smoothly. Granted it was evident that there were still an endles amount of questions to be asked he decided that he would answer the most basic of them all: The why. "Well,
in layman's terms you've been submitted for Anbu black ops recruitment and that's not the only thing - by some twist of fate your name happened to come across my desk."
Gene smiled, there were many things implied in just the one statement; the first being that someone had actually been keeping progress of her development and the second, that he himself was a Member of the ANBU black op despite being at least a half a decade younger than the woman herself. Shocking as the revelation may have been, Gene assumed that she could understand his reasons for not revealing such sensitive information until now but if not, well, she'd just have to deal with it.

"It's quite the story really but the bulk of it is that you've been getting some nice looks around the village.
Though...I wonder if that's a good thing..."

Masami could only raise a brow at the mention of Anbu black ops, having never heard of the organization before now. She could only figure that if A. she had never heard of them before and B. they went to methods like this for recruitment then they were obviously top secret, employing only a select few talented individuals. This was certainly a shock, though there were a few bigger surprises here. one being that they wanted someone like her, even going so far as to keep tas on her, and another being that Gene was very obviously a member, someone higher up on the chain likely based on the way that he was speaking. It was all shocking really and some part of her wanted to grill him about why he hadn't said anything but it was very likely that it was a hush hush matter, much like she herself had been keeping a big secret for very similar reasons.

She couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all, her frown turning into a smile as she calmed herself. She still had a ton of questions but at the very least she was less tense now. "That's some pretty heavy stuff. I never would have thought there was such an organization right under my nose all this time." she responded, pausing a moment as she thought of how to word this next statement. "I have a few more questions but for now I have two that are somewhat connected." she began, pausing again for a moment before speaking up once more. "What exactly is this organization? ..And what would I have to offer that would cause them to take such an interest in me?" She had felt as if she had been being watched more carefully than usual recently but she had shaken it off as a coincidence. How long could they have been scouting her out? ..And what exactly were they keeping tabs on? Were they simply watching her progress or had there been something else at stake? She wasn't entirely sure...

Where Masami had laughed, Gene only kept his eyes fixed to the burning flames as if to be searching for something beyond the orange flaming gates; he wondered for the second time since reading through her file if he'd been making the right decision; there was a chance that in bringing her onto the team Masami would be exposed to even greater risks to her safety than now, she would also become a high priority target amongst Konoha's many hidden enemies in the event that her Genma abilities were somehow revealed. Mulling over this, he almost didn't hear her revelation about the organization and instead tuned in when she asked her first series of questions."Your ability as a hunter and tracker on top of various other skills under your belt have made you a prime candidate for what my unit handles directly;" his word choice was deliberate, Gene hadn't mentioned the Genma within her on purpose feeling as though it would diminish her own accomplishments in favor of overselling a power not yet all her own. "Unfortunately, that's about all that I can tell you in good confidence." Gene paused, turning both Fish about a quarter clockwise to ensure that all sides of their soon to be meal was cooked correctly.

"If you want to know more then I'm afraid you'll have to take an inside tour for yourself; but I'll warn you now, there won't be any safeguards on this venture should you decide to take it. You'll learn things not for the faint of heart and there won't be any turning back from that point forward. I'd say we have about ten or so minutes until our food gets done you have that amount of time to decide for yourself. In the meantime, I have a question for you, too." Peering over his shoulders, Gene's Auburn hues met with Masami's and in that moment a look of seriousness flashed in the orbs only to vanish seconds later, replaced by that nonchalant glazed over expression that many had come to know him for. "He's probably long gone by now but that duplicate of me you saw, after things got intense why didn't you send a clone back to check on them? I may be a runt now but this body holds quite a few secrets ya' know?" At this, Gene's lips pulled into a closed mouth smile. Under the circumstances provided, sure, Masami's actions would have been just but ANBU were expected to consider and plan for many unforeseen circumstances. She'd chased after the assumed culprit but left the person she'd been trying to protect entirely - er, technically.

A part of Katana squads function was to locate, isolate & eradicate all threats to the safety of the village - by this logic, Masami's job would have been far from over as in a real time scenario someone would have made off with Gene's body and potentially looted him for all belongings on his person. They'd crack into his mind in order to learn about Konoha's military, the various special Ninjutsu learned and observed over the years and more! And yet, here they were chatting it up like old friends set apart from the world. THAT was what he feared the most; becoming an operative seemed to steal away the light in a person as even one of his closest friends had started to show signs of change despite a Hokage pipe dream. Murder, deceit, theft and more - all these things were just an honest day's work for Konoha's ANBU black op...was Masami really ready for that responsibility? For the third time he found himself asking this question and chastised himself mentally because of it. As long as she could perform then nothing else needed to be considered, right? So what was with this gut feeling?

"I wouldn't worry too much about it now. This time it was only a test run and frankly, if it had dragged on any longer than what it did I feel confident that the results overall would have been different. Wouldn't you agree, Masami?"

"That was simply a mistake, a very foolish mistake. I let myself get heated and that is something that I cannot afford to do. I know that very well but still I let it happen." Masami responded to Gene's question, frowning as she recalled that she had had a clone created but she had simply dismissed it, without thinking of the other possible uses that it could have, nor had she even thought of the body that she was leaving behind. Frankly she was disappointed in herself but oh well, it was just another lesson learned, and evidently there was still a lot of learning to be done, she knew that well enough.

For now, there was a much bigger matter currently at hand. She didn't have long to decide on whether or not she would actually want to be a part of the Anbu, she would need to consider her options as they chatted. Some part of her deep down knew what she wanted to do already. They thought that she was good enough, that her skills would prove to be of use, and some part of her simply wanted to accept just with that much in mind. All her life she had struggled, had lagged behind others even of her own age and younger, to think that they would want her was enough to make her want to prove herself all that much more.

She was broken out of her thoughts as Gene spoke once more, nodding in agreement with his words. "In all honesty, some part of me is a little annoyed. To a small extent it's felt like I was being fucked with and yes, if it had gone much farther I very much doubt that we would be sitting here having this conversation."

And yet there was still something that concerned her, something very important. Considering the clandestine nature of the organization and how top secret it seemed to be, she could only assume that operatives had access to top secret information.. including something that they could never know otherwise. "They know about it.. you know about it.. don't you?" She asked, lowering her tone just slightly and staring at him with an entirely serious look. It was a risky question but she had to know. And even if he didn't know, given the situation, she would likely have to spill the beans eventually regardless.

"That was simply a mistake, a very foolish mistake. I let myself get heated and that is something that I cannot afford to do. I know that very well but still I let it happen." As a friend, Gene wanted to tell Masami not to beat herself up about the decision she had made & that any normal person just may have made the same error. However, there were few things even he would put above the success of a task and life certainly met that bar. But the wellbeing of an entire village accordingly made the singular life that would have been lost seem insignificant; without realizing it, she had been punishing herself for making the appropriate decision. Ever thoughtful and opened minded as he was, Gene had already begun thinking into future formations with Masami knowing of her Genma status - in the event of any misfortune upon the unit it would be imperative that she at least, be the one to get away at all times. After all, the power within her was more than anything he or any Shinobi for that matter, would obtain in a lifetime. If something should happen and that power fall into the hands of one of Hi no Kuni's enemies....it would be a dark age for the village.
His perspective:
So far...the unit is consistent of mainly Kekkei Genkai and lineage bred Shinobi and their specialties range far and wide among one another. Adding a Genma host to this equation could be as beneficial as it could be detrimental depending on how I set this up. We'll be afforded strategies and battle tactics not available to the other units which will also put us right in the boiling pot as things go on....Heh, Takeo you jerk. Well...seeing as how there's no way to avoid this shit storm how can I gear up for it? Things would be a whole lot easier if we didn't have to hide the fact that there's a Genma among us but I don't think Masami is strong enough yet to take on the world.

WAIT A SECOND!
"In all honesty, some part of me is a little annoyed. To a small extent it's felt like I was being fucked with and yes, if it had gone much farther I very much doubt that we would be sitting here having this conversation." Well, it wasn't the perfect picture of millennial spirit but Gene liked the bravado displayed in this moment. At some point down the line he would make it his personal mission to kick her ass for the sport of it in remembrance of her words today. Until then, he only chuckled in response and hoped that she'd hold on to the flame burning brightly within her now. Strangely enough, it would be this moment that shined a light into the window of his future. For as long as he could remember, he'd been called a slacker and a genius on all accounts but within those two categories he didn't quite "Fit" with the others. Some time after being promoted to Chunin he'd been given the chance to become Commander of ANBU but the position had been robbed of him due to experience. Having faced up against mighty mythical creatures of unimaginable proportion, held his own against powerful Shinobi all across the country side & completed a fair share of high ranking assignments - he begged to differ if things hadn't changed considerably since then. If he were to assume the role of ANBU commander now with arguably the most diverse unit in the entire division, he - no, KATANA squad would break the stigma against the outcasts and misfits of society and what better way to silence the tight asses than that?

It might have been selfish of him but Gene honestly couldn't have cared less, he'd be labeled worse things if he lived long enough. Sure, he still had a long ways to go in the way of accepting the fact that the very being that destroyed his Mentor's mind now plagued the body of a great colleague but that was his own uphill battle. Besides, if she had joined under his command he would go the distance to see to it personally that the same fate would NOT fall on her shoulders. He'd lost enough friends and family for one lifetime, or so he believed. "Yeah, as Buntaicho I was among the first to know. However, even that didn't come without some snooping on my end. I wouldn't worry though, I doubt anyone will be seeing that file again." His mind flashed back to the manilla folder burning to ashes back in his office and then back to the present. "Seems like between the two of us there's enough secrets to build a house on, eh?" Turning around to face her Gene stood and walked over to where the woman had been. Taking a seat on an log turned on its side the boy sighed and gazed into the forest for as far as his vision could see. I don't believe this was a coincidence...Or if it was, it sure is one hell of a coincidence. And so it went, his Mentor had been a Genma host, then his teammate and now a soon to be subordinate , friend and colleague...The village...he, had lost Minoru due to the Genma's influence. He vowed that he wouldn't let Masami slip between the cracks as well. "Aside from you and me and of course the Hokage; your secret is safe with me though, you do stand out ya' know?" Gene poked fun at the body changes initiated by the Genma's influence on Masami's body - granted he'd seen them once before on Minoru back in the past, he'd been among the first to really draw the connection. Not that anyone else would have since it was a closely guarded secret both in and out of the village.

That was something he wouldn't tell her however. After all, everything didn't need to be said right away. She still had a decision to make and if his count was correct, time was almost up. "Should be done soon."

"I knew it. I guess that it was just a matter of time regardless. In a way it's a bit of a relief that one more friend knows about this. It's a weight off my mind in some ways, though admittedly concerning in others, but it's still more of a relief." she spoke, letting out a quiet sigh at the mention of her standing out, memories from long ago bubbling to the surface. Now seemed to be the right time to share as well, well.. hopefully. No harm in going for it.

"Ya know, I really can't understand why I was chosen as a host, though I guess that I've always stood out ever since I was young, though usually in the wrong ways. I was clumsy and in the academy had no skill with ninjutsu or even taijutsu and was bullied for it. I might have broke and just quit if not for the support of my family, and Aina. It's thanks to them, and my own drive to prove everyone else wrong that I got to where I am. I've worked a lot harder than most others and I'm glad that I'm being recognized, even if I'm not entirely sure why." Masami replied, some small part of her being a bit shocked that it had been such a simple matter for her status as a host to be learned of. She really was relieved though that now she was hiding Aturasu's presence from one less friend, a friend whom she would be working under if she accepted the invitation. It was a bit of a weird thought really.

So.. he knows about us and you've trusted him with surely painful information. I assume that you've made up your mind child? Aturasu suddenly spoke within her mind, the Genma having only been nonchalantly listening in until now.

Of course I have. This is the sort of thing that I've been training for, you know that. I just didn't think that it would end up working out quite like this. she mentally replied to the beast.

Hmph, you still have a long ways to go but very well. I trust that you've made the correct choice.

Not bothering to reply further, she turned her attention back towards Gene and the slowly cooking fish. There wasn't much more time for her to make her decision, and she knew what she wanted to do, she just needed to say it. "I.. I've made up my mind."

Getting special; Inuzuka, Masami recruitment

Admittedly, Gene struggled to see the relief in his knowing from her perspective but delighted in the revelation all the same. Whether through a combination of youthful optimism or lack thereof Gene had been more understanding of the situation that he expected of himself, feeling little more than his own heartbeat as Masami mentioned being concerned; they were well beyond the point for such things now, not to mention that of all the people to know the Cloud watcher was perhaps the most reasonable of them. When he looked at Masami he didn't see a monster, a tool to be used or even a host; no, he saw her. Protective, outspoken, ambitious, courageous to a fault & above all else loyal. When combined with her other quirks to say the least Masami was actually a pretty cool person and it was that realization that kept Gene from falling into his own anger about the details of her sealing. All in all, he was glad that she didn't mind opening up to him even if he had forced the issues...somewhat.

I've worked a lot harder than most others and I'm glad that I'm being recognized, even if I'm not entirely sure why." Now, there were several things that had touched Gene's soul in Masami's sentiment; specifically, the desire to silence the doubters and those who otherwise, could not see the great vision of life's great architectural design. In her heart, she had always known that she would be something great, someone strong and fought valiantly to ascertain that dream. Still young himself, Gene received endless waves of criticism when he'd been recruited into ANBU with most everyone including the Commander at the time believing that his youth would be his undoing. The same had been said when he'd been assigned to his old Team as its newest Instructor over Three Genin who were less than a year under him and eventually again when he'd risen to become the youngest Buntaicho in Konoha history. It seemed that for every achievement netted under his belt, there was more doubt, more critique and the shit never seemed to end. Scoffing mentally to himself, something of a rebellious fire had been lit under his ass: If the bastards didn't want to acknowledge that there was a new power rising in the Village Hidden in the Leaves then Gene would grab them by the balls and squeeze until they were forced to pay attention.

"I'm sorry, did you just say that YOU were bullied? Seeing you now that's kind of hard to imagine but...the say the brightest diamonds are usually found in the darkest of places." And he meant every word; after all, Gene never would have imagined that just after one year of being promoted to Chunin that he'd be well - in the ANBU but that was just the thrill of life talking. At this point, he'd given up on trying to make sense of the happenings in his past. From her tone alone Gene reasoned that the opportunity to step into a new light (shadow in their case) was greatly appreciated and he supposed that was all that mattered. When she had come to a decision it'd been right on time, the Fish was finished cooking and while he responded with a look of curiousity Gene had more so been focused on grabbing his own meal. "Yeah? Well, lets hear it." He replied calmly, "Please,
help yourself."

"A lot, and I mean a lot.. has happened since then, hardly anything about me is the same as that girl from back then. Sometimes even I can hardly recognize myself." Masami nonchalantly responded, picking up one of the fish and taking a quick bite before delivering her response to the overarching question, the reason that they were having this conversation. Even as they had been talking, she had been processing everything that she had been told and working to figure out just what she felt about it. In actuality it had been fairly easy to come up with an answer, and now that she had had even more time to think about it, she realized that it was really the only appropriate choice, especially for someone such as herself.

"I'll join you." she said simply, looking directly towards Gene, a fire burning deep within her amber colored eyes and a small smile on her face. "I expect that things will only get harder and more dangerous from here out but if even someone like me can help the village in this way, then I'm all for it." Even despite all of her insecurities she knew this much, that she was willing to do anything, face any danger, for the sake of the village and her loved ones, even if it meant having to do so from the shadows.

And with that, she fell silent munching on her fish as she waited for some kind of response. She had to wonder just what Gene himself thought of this situation but it didn't quite feel right to ask, so all she could really do was wait and look for a reaction.

The answer she had given him naturally made Gene happy but in the same breath, there was a grim realization that everything he believed regarding her recruitment specifically just may have come to pass. He wasn't going to try and talk her out of the decision - after all, that wasn't his place and he damn sure wouldn't make the extra effort to do so but a part of him WAS concerned for Masami rather than thrilled. Regardless of the feeling of uncertainty in his gut however, Gene would stand by the woman and help in whatever way possible to make the transition from regular ninja to top secret operative as...smooth as it could be. "I see. Well, you understand the risks well enough so there's no point in me giving you a lecture." Gene began, pausing only to take a bite out of his meal only to continue after he'd finished chewing. "At some point tomorrow stop by my place but make sure you aren't followed this time.
You and I are going to be taking a little field trip."
Yeah, they'd be going on a field trip alright - a field trip detailing the vast inner workings of an underground compound just about as large as the entire village itself. He'd decided to oversee her development in this particular area personally and as such, couldn't afford to take things lightly so soon. There was still the matter of paper work to deal with as well as a sit down with the other Buntaicho and Commander explaining the situation; boy, THAT fiasco ought to have been a fun ordeal. Gene cracked a smile just thinking about how irate Onigumo would be once he found out and even more so, imagined that the Adrenaline junky of a Hokage was probably spinning in his office chair laughing at this development.

After all, this whole thing had begun with him.....

As much as he would have liked to stay and chat; Masami's acceptance of his offer meant that his job wasn't quite over yet. Since he'd flown off the handle and incinerated her file he now had to go back to the office and create a whole new one within the data base which would take time. Additionally, when he DID create her file he'd be sure to leave her Genma status off the record on purpose. Therefore, anyone snooping or wishing to would not discover her secret even if they had stumbled upon the file somehow. Gene believed in keeping secrets closely guarded and now that Masamai had technically been "one of the family" anything pertaining to her was no longer JUST public record. She'd taken the first step to becoming an Elite among the Elite today, a step toward changing her destiny forever. "From this point forward you'll be entering a world much different from the one you know. But...As long as you continue to push yourself as you have been then I believe you'll be fine." Gene stood, "Oh and Masami.." He paused waiting for her to respond but while he waited, he'd take another bite. "We'll have to finish our bout some time; gotta admit I needed the work out. Feel free to hang around for a bit to process everything we've talked about today - the operatives that were here are long gone now so you don't have anything else to worry about. I still need to take care of a few things so I'm afraid we'll have to cut this one short."

Getting special; Inuzuka, Masami recruitment

"Admittedly this is still a bit much to fully believe but I'll work as hard as I can. I won't let you down boss." Masami responded, standing and raising her hand in a mock salute, lips turned up into a grin. In all honesty, the weirdest part of this entire thing was that she would be working under someone several years her junior, though surely it would be a good experience. Though speaking of experience, she had a vague feeling that the missions from here out would require her to not only improve on the skills that she already possessed but also to overcome her own discomforts and insecurities, the thought causing her to shudder. Granted that much was a natural turn of events but now more than ever there was no room for being stubborn or letting a few minor discomforts get in the way, especially if the job required as much, even if she didn't necessarily like it at times.

She was broken out of her thoughts as Gene spoke once more, taking a bite of her fish as she listened to him speak. "Alright, I think that I'm going to sit around here for a while to let it all fully sink in. I'll see you again soon. And I would like another bout sometime, I owe you one for messing around with me." she responded with a light laugh as Gene mentioned cutting their conversation off. Admittedly she was a bit disappointed at the abrupt ending but there was likely a lot of work to be done concerning the events that had just transpired, probably paperwork and maybe meetings, either way she didn't envy whoever would have to sit through all that.

She took a bite of her fish as she once more lost herself in her thoughts and watched Gene depart, laying on her back and staring up at the canopy. What was her future going to be like from this point? Things were going to be much different from here on, and as uncertain as it was, she was going to tackle it all with her full strength and do whatever she could to prove that they and she had made the right choice, no matter the circumstance.
