[Red Alert] Tangled in the Web

Post by Zao » Tue Mar 27, 2018 3:50 pm

Over the course of the spirit attack that was assaulting both of the great nations borders something had slipped into the northwest portion of the forest of Fire country unseen or heard and in its wake the forest in an area of ten square kilometers had been infested with various webbing as all communication from that area of the country had gone silent. Even the Leaf village had lost two scouting parties within the web covered forest area that had been deemed by some the forest of death, who ever was to explore the cause behind the various disappearances and deaths within and nearby this area of forest would need to be on their toes. Because the strange thing was that almost daily the exterior of webbing was slowly expanding as whom ever or what ever had taken up residence within the dark patch of forest planned on continuing to expand it's territory...

[Red Alert] Tangled in the Web

Post by Valkier » Wed Mar 28, 2018 1:18 pm

At first, the few missing reports from outposts in the area had seemed a minor concern next to the state of emergency elsewhere in Fire, Wind, and Oasis countries. But as the lack of communication continued, anxiety over the fate of the region deepened. When the scout parties too failed to return any word, a more decisive investigation was called for. So, while many of Konohagakure's finest scoured the front lines on the conflict on the western borders of Hi no Kuni, Terūin Hayashi prowled towards the north-western forests.

The aged jounin moved carefully, keeping his footfalls soft and steady as he shifted positions continually while searching. While locating the lost scout parties was a core part of his mission here, the evidence of a looming threat soon became apparent, and his objective therefore quickly began to change from a search and rescue mission to one of threat elimination. When he found the outside edge of an area covered in webbing, he kept himself at a a distance and considered. Whatever lay within that area had completely dominated the forest, and he was quickly losing hope of finding the scouts at all, let alone alive. Still moving carefully, Hayashi wove a series of hand seals before a mirror-image of him burst into existence beside him. While he himself hung back to observe - at least until more backup units caught up with him - he sent the clone in closer to the webbed area to investigate.

The clone unsheathed its sword and slashed experimentally at a dense section of webbing, intentionally disturbing the out-of-place material in the hope of drawing out whatever had created it. At the same time, a second but weaker technique followed from its master, and a fireball arced through the trees towards another section of web. Hopefully, one attack or the other would prove effective.
Techniques Used...Show
*Katon • Idol of Amaterasu
A-Rank Ninjutsu
After performing the correct hand seals the user forms a clone made completely of Katon. This clone is incapable of performing ninjutsu, however is very adept at hand to hand combat and has the following stats:
  • Taijutsu: 20
  • Stamina: 20
  • Strength: 20
  • Speed: 25
*Katon • Great Fireball
C-Rank Katon Ninjutsu
After performing the correct hand seals, the user draws in a deep breath before exhaling a thin stream of flames up to 15 meters away at a speed of 10. Either at 15 meters, or if the stream makes impact with anything, the stream will erupt into a spherical C-Rank explosion, scattering flames all over the immediate area.

[Red Alert] Tangled in the Web

The forests were as much his home as the village itself these days. Kazuo spent more time prowling amongst the trees and fighting with the local chakra-enriched fauna and flora than he did fighting off criminals or enemy ninja. So when the reports came back that people were going missing in the aptly named Forest of Death naturally he, as the leader of the Sekkoutai branch of Mamorinuku, moved to find out just exactly what was going on in his back yard. Moving through the trees, he and Koji were as silent as ghosts, their feet and paws respectively rarely so much as disturbing the branches they landed on before they were moving once more. All the while the duo had their nostrils flared, senses opened wide, searching for any sign of a scent trail that would lead them to either their missing comrades or to whatever had made them go missing in the first place.

The most prominent scent in the area, the first one he could definitively track, was only a few hours old at most. Fresh. Far too fresh to be the missing scouts and too human to be any kind of monster. He followed the trail until he started coming across the mass amounts of webbing encroaching on his forest and had to fight back the urge to snarl and start burning it away. The trees were strong and could likely survive the inferno and even if they didn't, that was what the Senju were for. Moving as carefully as he could to avoid ever touching the stuff, he found the source of the scent trail. Dropping down beside the ninja silently, he rose an eyebrow at the elderly man and offered up in standard Konoha sign language rather than speaking aloud.

Anything to report?

He made sure his forehead protector was clearly visible and made a motion to the large symbol of Mamorinuku emblazoned on the back of his coat. He didn't want the jounin thinking he was getting in over his head.

Konoha Nin

The webbing on the exterior portion of the claimed area of forest wasn't to incredibly strong, able to withstand the weaker katon technique though over time the technique would burn through the threads of spider silk before it burned out out and as for the clone these weaker webs were more than easily cleaved through by the fire clone now. About forty meters away from the pair a group (six) of two-to-three meter tall spiders were spread out with their glossy black eyes watching their portions of the forest, two of the young spirits felt the tugs of the man's attacks on their signal lines. Their was no verbal communication between the spiders but three of the spiders retreated towards the interior area of the webbed forest region leaving the remaining three to watch over these new comers.

On the complete opposite side of the forest region of the two Konoha-nin, a white robed youth stood at the visible line between the forest and the territory of the spiders that had taken over this portion of the forest now. The man's bright blue eyes suddenly were infused with a maroon tent to them now as the former Suna-nin activated his [Vision of Spirits] technique now allowing for him to see spirits or animals and objects with spirits within them now. This type of event was much different the ones that he had been helping deal with over the past week or so of these random spirit attacks. The other spirits didn't seem to be organized in any fashion or demonstrate any ideals of dominating a piece of land to make it their own, simply attacking what every they ran into from being in such a frenzied state of mind due to being locked away for so many years. But this scene was different and it was something that gave the experienced Tenku user a slight chill on the back of his neck. Off to either side of the man was a figure cloaked in black or red, though aside from the different color identifiers one was unable to tell a difference in them and the fashion of the layers of material prevented anyone from viewing what laid beneath them with the naked eye now.

While not clearly, the young scholar could make out the chakra of a few lesser ranked spirits within the dense forest that was shrouded in additional darkness provided by the webbing that blocked out light from above the canopy from penetrating to the ground in this sector of forest. Removing a kunai from the left thigh rig and began to cautiously cut a path through some of the webbing finding that the exterior layers of webbing that spanned between the majority of trees was fairly weak but after pushing thirty or forty meters into the tree line it actually became able to resist being cut for the first couple of swipes. The two figures that had came with Zao flanked him on either side as they began to push into the forest in search of just whom was responsible for this. Just like the Leaf village, the Sands village had also received various reports from the surrounding area and had even launched a scouting party of their own.

The young man had come personally because one of his friend had been on that party and had not relayed any word in two full days after arriving here. He only hoped that he was still here on a rescue mission and not a recover mission instead. Steeling himself for the path ahead now the bright blue eyes with their ever so slight tinge of maroon swept side to side and above as this type of environment presented a three hundred and sixty degree threat to those who chose to push in and seek the truth of this place.

The report must have taken a little longer to reach the Suna camp than it did the Konoha forces it seemed- because as he lept through trees and dodged branches in the dense forest- something he wasn't painfully use to being from the desert, he arrived to find there were already two figures at the site when he arrived, both wearing Konohagakure forehead protectors. He approached with caution. This was more their territory than it was his, but as a joint act both shinobi village forces were moving freely about. Before he could kick off the trees to get closer an intense blaze filled the area.

Those Konoha guys... always trying to fight everything with fire.

Assessing a safe point he lept down to meet the other two, making sure his forehead protector was visible. At this point his body was completely covered in bandages sans his desert clothing- he wasn't aware of the culture elsewhere but in Sunagakure his body was... somewhat of a sin. Or point of shame. He'd probably look weird.

"Suna's Hasegawa. Artillery specialist." He brandished the forehead protector that was embedded into his scarf. "I don't think your fire is doing much. He held his arms out." He grinned wide, clicking his teeth. "Want me to fan that fire for you?" The Fire and Wind were a good combo after all.

[Red Alert] Tangled in the Web

Hayashi watched his fireball impact the targeted web with little immediate effect, while the clone clove through the web with a single slice of its weapon. That gave him some indication on the strength of the web; clearly it was far beyond that of a regular creature, but neither was it indicative of something beyond his ability to contest. Furthermore, the web hit by the fireball had begun burning nicely, implying that there was nothing particularly unusual about the material -- it would cut and burn just like anything else.

Part way through this line of thought a flicker of movement caught his eye, and he looked sideways to see a comrade drop to the ground beside him. Hayashi immediately took in the slightly wild appearance and cheek-marks of one of the Inuzuka, and followed the man's indication to the symbol of the Mamorinuku. He met the Inuzuka's eye and nodded in welcome.

"Appreciate the support," he muttered, forgoing the sign language in favour of a muttered communication. It was simpler, and he didn't yet see the need for secrecy. "Nothing definitive yet, and no sign of the missing scouts so far. They must be further in, where the webs grow thicker. Those don't seem to be anything special." The grizzled jounin turned his gaze back to the forest ahead, where his clone now waited for its next command. "I'm glad you're here, Inuzuka - that nose of yours will be useful as we move forward. What's your name?"

At the sound of a second approaching person, Hayashi's hand darted down to the hilt of his weapon and he half turned towards the newcomer, poised and ready to draw, before his eyes found the man's forehead protector. Spotting the symbol of Sunagakure made him hesitate long enough to hear the man's introduction, whereupon Hayashi relaxed and withdrew his hand. Ignoring the jibe about his katon - if it came to it, his fires would be plenty strong enough - he looked the new arrival up and down briefly before returning the greeting.

"Terūin Hayashi, of the leaf. Your support is welcome, Hasagawa." 'Artillery', huh? Interesting. The man didn't appear to be heavily armed - though wrapped up as he was, it was difficult to say for sure - so Hayashi presumed the Suna ninja was likely to be a long-range ninjutsu specialist. If true, that could complement their growing group nicely.

Looking between the two, Hayashi tried not to frown. They both seemed very young to be out on the frontlines alone. Could he trust their abilities? The Inuzuka was obviously sanctioned by the Mamorinuku which eased his concern, but he could only guess when it came to the Suna shinobi. Unfortunately, he didn't like the idea of dismissing any willing help, so he decided to put a little trust into his new colleagues. And perhaps keep an occasional eye on them until he could see that they could hold their own. Allowing his clone to watch ahead, where the webs had been disturbed, Hayashi turned to address the two other ninja.

"We have no intel about what lies ahead. For that reason, I think it's best we stick together and move as a single unit. Artillery Hawagawa, I take it you can clear a path for us through these webs? They grow thicker ahead, and it'll be slow going hacking through them one by one... And I'd rather not ignite the entire forest. I suggest you follow the nose of my comrade here -" he looked to his fellow Konohagakure shinobi and tried to gauge the man's reaction to his next suggestion, seeking confirmation of the man's skillset "- who I trust is capable of hunting down whatever is lurking ahead before it starts hunting us." If they agreed with the marching order, the small formation would also allow Hayashi and his clone the freedom to react swiftly to anything they encountered.

[Red Alert] Tangled in the Web

Post by Sanjuro » Sat Mar 31, 2018 12:44 pm

Since the one on site saw no need for silence, Kazuo decided to respond in kind, "Kazuo. That's Koji," he jerked a thumb in the ninken's direction, causing Koji to growl in response. "Happy to help out in any way we can. Don't much like it when creepy crawlies take up residence in the rafters, ya know?" Even as he spoke, he was closing his eyes and flaring his nostrils, taking in the nearby scents and breaking them down into their individual trails while his ears began to blur our the natural sound of the forest, focusing in instead of the sound of his breathing, that of Hayashi's, and the fast approaching footsteps of another shinobi.

He ignored the introductions for the time being, trusting Hayashi to handle things, while he began to backtrack the faint scent trail of whatever creature had created the nearby webbing. Once he found the scent trail it wasn't hard to pick it up. The lack of wind in a forest this dense didn't hinder or help his efforts, but the trees themselves were covered in the scent he had found. Whatever it was, there was more than one. Opening his eyes, he could track the scent without focusing so much now, he turned and offered a nod to the newcomer. He hadn't had many dealings with their allies in Suna, only serving as an escort through the forest now and then.

"There are more than one, I can pick up at least a half dozen, maybe more." A small shudder ran down his spine, not of disgust but more of excitement. It had been a while since he had had the opportunity to stretch his legs, so to speak. He gave Hasegawa a once over, sniffing the air and making sure to take note of his scent, picking it apart for how the man felt in such proximity to a pair of foreign shinobi and in their territory. "I can lead us through. Step lightly, if you're capable of such a thing." He jerked his head to the artificial leg of the suna ninja; Kazuo couldn't see it so much as hear the strange combination of materials that sounded nothing like flesh and bone.

Leaping forward into the darkness, he was sure to keep his nose and ears open as much as, if not more so, than his eyes, as he began to track their pray. Koji moved right alongside him, head held low, moving as silently as he large form allowed, which was still better than most. The problem remained that no matter how silent they were, each time they touched the branches they sent vibrations through the trees, to which the webs were attached, and from what Kazuo understood of normal spiders and working with Yosuke, that was how they detected their prey, not through scent or sight or sound.

It made scenting them before they came into visual range all the more important. As soon as they were within striking distance he would issue a warning to his temporary comrades so as to avoid having them all get webbed and sucked dry.
TechniquesShow
[Predator's Instinct • Primal Nose]
B-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
After utilizing his nose and training his sense of smell for so long, Kazuo has become able to tap his sense of smell to its most refined and most bestial. Kazuo is able to pick out the most common scents and focus on the freshet ones in an area of 10 meters around him. By doing this Kazuo is able to tell the amount of individual humans, animals or creatures and the most intense smells of each person, including if they were injured or if they were tired by gauging sweat levels. Kazuo can then track these groups of scents with relative ease.

[Predator's Instinct • Faint Scent]
C-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Inhaling deeply of a specific scent and focusing on it, Kazuo becomes able to track this scent over great distances. Faint scents are the layered, complicated scents such as sweat, sparks, treated wood and oftentimes are hard to distinguish even for canines. During the tracking of these scents it is often hard for Kazuo to focus on other things and he can easily lose the scent, so avoiding combat is required. Targets must have been standing in the area Kazuo begins tracking them from for at least a post or a scenting object such as a personal object must be used to begin tracking. Water, wind and strong scents do not inhibit this level of tracking individually, but when used together they will block scent.

[Predator's Instinct • Distinct Sounds]
C-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Kazuo mentally takes in and registers the default sounds of an area; creaking on a boat, wind against walls, their own breathing and other sounds one would expect. By doing this Kazuo becomes more acutely aware of sounds that 'don't belong', such as footsteps in an empty room or a branch breaking in a quiet forest. The contrast of sounds is what is important here, not the type, and Kazuo can discern differences in natural sound versus those made by action in most cases unless the actions are deliberately made to sound natural. This focus on distinct sounds once again opens up the user to sonic attacks very damagingly and can often deafen the user.

[Predator's Instinct • State of Affairs]
C-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Having spent so much time honing his sense of smell, Kazuo has become more attuned to the way smells can reflect the emotional state of the one who emanates them. He can tell when someone is nervous or excited, scared or happy, etc, from their scent alone.

[Predator's Instinct • The Hunt is On]
B-Rank Taijutsu Stance
Having spent years honing the art of silently stalking his prey, Kazuo has learned to naturally adjust the way he moves to remove any distinguishable noise even when moving at top speed. Those with enhanced hearing will still be able to make out the sound of his approach whilst moving at top speed, but should he slow to a walk he will become completely undetectable by sound even to himself.

As the Kazou took the lead the Inuzuka's nose would be filled with the scent of many, though the odor of death and decay could be smelled from all around but it only would continue to grow stronger the further the ground adventured inwards toward the darkening forest before them. About twenty to thirty meters in from their previous meeting position the ground would begin to see cocoon like wrapping that were small, some around the size of a small dog before they would see a much larger one that was about the size of an averaged heighted man. The smell of a dead human would have been easy to detect. Much further in the forest a single signal line vibrated sending a message out from the center of the forest area to a series of spiders who received the message and passed it along like a phone tree. It was simple. "Kill the shinobi and bring their bodies to me, they'll make a nice snack for my new born." The spiders nearest the group began to slowly form a semi circle around them but refrained from venturing within forty meters of them and instead just observed through their numerous signal lines spread out now. Waiting for the proper moment it seemed....

On the other side of the forest

The white robed youth made much slower progress then the other shinobi that were on the opposite side of this forest of death, after entering ten to twenty meters into the wood the man then silently flared out his chakra to encompass everything within a fifty meter radius of himself now. Being here with only his two partially designed puppets as the man truly wasn't a proficient puppet master by any means yet and was only something he messed around with as a hobby in truth. He needed to be much more careful then he would have been traveling with a partner or group even. As the chakra reached its boundaries the man could instantly make out five to eight chakra signatures within his range and to a point it made a few drops of sweat form on the back of his neck.

He had just barely entered into the forest and their was already this many foes around him, simply judging from the area it was more than obvious for on to guess that these spirits were of the arachnid variety and one that Zao didn't have a lot of experience dealing with. To an extent, this would be a learning session for the man only this was not in any library or controlled environment instead it was on the field of battle were life and death were real things. Narrowing his bright blue eyes slightly at the targets he began to move with forward again as the puppet in the front had brandished a pair of Katana which were slowly hacking away at the field of spider webs that were zigzagged back and forth through the tree trunks. Pushing straight through them instead of utilizing the paths left by the webbing that most likely were a method to funnel prey into a choke point before attacking and killing them.

It was at this point that the man began to see the same thing that the other group was seeing, prey that had been caught and wrapped up within the webbing though none of the ones this far out were alive having already been killed and some still in the process of being eaten. Even without the enhanced senses like some the man could faintly smell death lingering within the air from the numerous cocoons that could be found handing around and the further one went the larger they seemed to become human size which caused the man to stop in his tracks. A few chakra strings snaked up and grabbed this large silk cocoon now and after a few tugs managed to pull it free and bring it to himself now before removing a kunai and carefully cutting open the silk which was tougher then rope. Inside was the dead both of a young kid, probably only around twelve to fourteen judging just from the boy's face now. At the top of the boy's head was a pair of incisor holes from where the spider had fed on the body after capturing him.

This caused the man to grit his teeth as an ugly look over took the man's normally handsome face, he truly had come to late but perhaps he wasn't to late to help his friend who was missing. Withdrawing a kunai from each leg holster now the man set the cocooned body down on the ground as their was nothing that could be done at this point for the child. The clean up of the bodies would be the last thing that would be done as the man would need to start dealing with the numerous spiders that blended in effortlessly within the dark forest ahead of and around him. Though it wasn't these on the outer rim that worried him so much as it was the ones closer to the center who had spawned all of these spiders...
