Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

Post by AFungalNetwork » Tue Apr 15, 2025 12:23 am

Tetsuo sat alone in the training hall of The Defiant Order, the silence heavy around him as he turned over thoughts of his own shortcomings. There has to be a way to get stronger, he mused. Training with Shintaro and enduring the trial of the Stone Monolith had pushed him further than ever before—but something still felt missing. There was a gap in his technique, a hollow space he couldn’t quite fill.

His eyes drifted downward, to the faint scar on his chest—a mark left by the monster boar’s tusk. The wound had long since healed, but the memory remained, etched into flesh as a quiet reminder of his limits. That’s when her name surfaced in his mind: Hanayo.

She was formidable. Skilled in ways he wasn’t. Maybe there was something he could learn from her—if she’d be willing.

Tetsuo rose abruptly and returned to his quarters, retrieving a sealed glass jar from the back of a shelf. Inside, suspended in a preserving fluid, was a long, inky-black, tendril-like appendage—the Deepcaller’s Tongue. He had collected it knowing Hanayo—or perhaps even Bando—would be interested in its unique properties.

The decision was made.

He gathered two scrolls, a pen, and a small vial. He’d write to her and offer the tongue in exchange for training. Whether she accepted or not, he had to try. This was the next step.
LetterShow
To the Esteemed Shinobi of the Hidden Leaf,

I trust this message finds you beneath watchful eyes, yet beyond their full reach.

Word travels quietly of your skill in refined martial practice—strength guided by precision. I am writing to propose an exchange that may prove mutually beneficial. I am in possession of a component of rare pedigree, one desired by those who seek understanding of the deep and the unseen.

Enclosed with this letter is a sealed vial—a token only. A blood sample drawn from the Deepcaller's Tongue, taken in the field and preserved immediately. It will confirm the authenticity of my claim, though the quantity is insufficient for application. Consider it proof of concept.

In return for this resource, I seek practical instruction in a particular combative tradition. A physical art—resilient, grounded. It need not be formal, only effective.

To legitimize your movements, I have included a dossier outlining a fabricated mission assignment. It should suffice under casual review, should your departure require justification. The forgeries are of professional standard.

Should you find this proposal agreeable, I will remain near Daikan Hollow Pass, nestled among the abandoned mines east of the Silverback Ridge. It is untraveled terrain, known for avalanches and wind shear—unlikely to be disturbed.

I do not expect a reply. Only your arrival, should the offer speak to you.

—A Traveler at the Foot of the Mountain
DossierShow
Mission Title: Investigation of Missing-Nin Activity – Mt. Daikan Hollow, Lightning Empire

Location: Mt. Daikan Hollow, Northern Lightning Empire — Abandoned Mining Region, North-East Quadrant

Mission Type: Reconnaissance / Potential Recovery

Requested Classification: B-Rank (Solo)

Objective Summary:
Intelligence received from unaffiliated source regarding possible missing-nin occupation or artifact retrieval efforts occurring in the remains of the Daikan Hollow mining complex. The informant claims to have spotted a rogue shinobi operating alone, seeking to recover high-value materials—potentially restricted relics or chakra-sensitive substances—left behind in the now-defunct facility.

The informant has no prior affiliation with Konohagakure, and appears to be offering the information in exchange for a future favor or trade, citing possession of a rare alchemical material allegedly recovered from an aquatic summons species.

Justification:
Though structurally compromised, Daikan Hollow was once a shinobi-operated mining facility utilized during the 2nd Shinobi World War, and could house remaining fuinjutsu seals, chakra-infused ore, or historical scrolls left behind. Given the risk of forbidden materials falling into rogue hands, immediate reconnaissance is requested.

Contingency Protocols:
If the informant proves hostile or the area is found abandoned, the mission will be marked as neutralized or invalidated.
No formal connection exists between operative and informant. Interaction will be treated as first contact.

Estimated Duration: 4–6 days, including travel and high-altitude adaptation.

Risks:

Severe weather conditions and high-altitude fatigue

Structural collapse

Potential hostile contact with rogue shinobi

Limited communication range due to terrain

Hanayo thumbed the stopper. She’d read the attached note twice. Though she did find it flattering, she was no longer the type to swoon over sweet words. The vial, however, drew her full attention. She gave the semifluid contents a shake; watching the dark residue bleed up the glass. It might be a genuine article. Uncorking the vial and giving it a single sniff, she recoiled as blood swelled to her face. The meaty, raw scent invading her nose set off an explosion in her sinuses.

Somehow, in a fit of red-eyed sniffling, she experienced a brief flash of clarity. Extract from the Deepcaller’s tongue was banned for good reason– even a sample of this size carried remarkable potency. Though it was common in recreational and ritual use, if she could get hold of a larger quantity, the jounin suspected she would be able to find a far greater purpose. It was an unusual one, but her secret admirer was offering a gift.

She didn’t encounter much trouble at the village gate. That was the nerve-wracking part. She weighed every step, expecting someone to swoop in from the shadows to collect her at any moment. It would be hard to excuse a sudden vacation to the Lightning Country, even with the forged mission scroll. They didn't ask many questions, none of which concerned why she was sweating in the shade.

After setting out, Hanayo found passage east out of a small port. Her nerves cooled as the ship rode off the coast into cold open waters. A journey of three days and two nights. She played the guessing game to keep her occupied, tossed and turned the question of ‘who’ over and over again. It had to be someone who understood the inner workings of Konoha’s ninmu system. As if that narrowed it down. Her old merry band of misfits, now scattered to the winds, were all former Leaf nin. Could one have been blown northward to the Lightning Country?

The jounin kept her headband hidden once she set foot onto foreign soil and a dusty cloak wrapped over her flak. This far from home, it brought not only warmth, but a sense of comfort.
She convinced a charming mountaineer to let her hitch a ride. He brought her to the foot of Mt. Daikan, warning her sweetly and rather pointlessly of the extreme conditions she would face. She’d packed light for the expedition, unsure of what to expect aside from a vague idea of ‘practical instruction’.

As she entered into the wind-chiseled stone pass it was the quiet that struck her first. The emptiness. She could almost hear her heartbeat echo. She climbed steps cut along the mountainside while old railway tunnels bored straight through it. There were shafts– no, chasms with never-ending drops that provoked a voice-stealing awe. Not for the first time she suspected someone of drawing her into a trap of curiosity. She liked to believe she had a sixth sense for trouble but not the wisdom to avoid it.

After wandering the mines for some time, Hanayo came upon an open area strewn with construction and mining equipment that she swore she had passed before. So far the mountains seemed endless. And deserted… They knew to expect her, and as a guest it would be polite to announce her arrival. All she needed was a means of getting their attention. The moment the thought came to her, Hanayo spotted a pulley system– chains rusted, frame brittle –designed to lift workers to higher levels.

A kunai appeared in her hand and just as smoothly she launched it with a hint of short-sighted mischief in her smile. The blade struck a weak link and sent a chain clattering down. She flinched. It chimed in the delicate silence building into a crescendo and crash as it dragged the rest of the system with it. Well, that’s one way to knock.

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

The first thing Tetsuo heard as he waited was a chaotic clatter—crashes and bangs echoing like an avalanche of metal. It could only be a falling minecart. He looked down from the ledge where he'd been meditating and, to his delight, spotted Hanayo. She stood below with a mischievous grin tugging at her lips.

Tetsuo smirked and leapt down to meet her.

Two things had changed about him:
A large scar now stretched across the center of his torso, a brutal reminder of where the boar had gored him.
His muscles were more defined, his body hardened—he looked like he'd grown significantly stronger.

“What an entrance you’ve made. Welcome to the Lightning Empire. It’s been a while, Hanayo. I hope you’ve been well.”
His voice was calm as ever, but the small smirk across his lips betrayed a flicker of warmth.

“Thank you for the truffles. I met an... interesting person because of them. Which brings me to why I asked you here.”
His expression shifted, the smirk fading as he turned and began walking along the edge of the mineshaft, motioning for her to follow.
“There’s a tournament coming up, and I’ve realized... I’m lacking.”

He paused, his tone darkening.

“I’ve grown stronger since you last saw me. But it’s not enough. I have strength—but not the technique to use it properly.”
There was a flicker of frustration in his voice, almost disgust at the thought.

“I need skills that match the power I’ve gained. Konoha is known for the Strong Fist style of taijutsu. Perhaps you’ve heard of it?”
His eyes met hers briefly, searching, before flicking back toward the path ahead.
“You’re my only contact in the village. Naturally, you were the first person I thought of.”

They reached a small, hidden alcove carved into the rock—easy to miss if one didn’t know where to look. Inside stood a large test tube, filled with glowing fluid. Suspended within it, slowly drifting, was a long, inky-black, tentacle-like appendage.

“Have you ever seen something like this?” he asked, resting a hand gently on the glass.
“It came from a creature called a Deepcaller. A juvenile attacked me a few weeks back. I managed to harvest this... and I remembered your fascination with rare ingredients.”

He turned to Hanayo, offering a small, knowing smile.

“I’d gladly trade it... in exchange for your knowledge of the Strong Fist techniques.”

Then, with casual ease, he leaned back against the stone wall, eyes fixed on her, waiting.

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

Post by Dual » Thu Apr 17, 2025 7:56 pm

Hanayo chewed her thumbnail coyly as a plume of destruction clouded the area. A tad bit dramatic, but it served a purpose. Hyuuga Tetsuo appeared out of the fine dust. A part of her was surprised to see him still alive. The man she’d left bleeding through his bandages in a swamp wouldn’t have inspired hope in the most optimistic of surgeons. But he'd recovered, grown– and the muscles were not the only change. His gaze had sharpened somewhat, as if he saw the world with new clarity.

She followed him on the tour of his new haunts. Along the way, her eyes swept around the cold gray landscape. Good for brooding. “It is a step up from the swamp,” she muttered, marveling at the way her voice bounced off the hard, flat planes of rock. It might be lacking some color, but if you wanted seclusion then it couldn’t be beat. She almost envied him.

“You brought me all the way out here just for that?” she asked when he made his offer. The man was stone. Cut, break, or crush it, it’d always be the same on the inside.

Pride. Such a nasty thing. From trophy hunting to the tournament, it was driving Tetsuo to madness. She should warn him not to make himself a target—but then again, if he insisted on charging into danger, she might as well be the one to benefit from it.

Her yellow eyes flicked from the vial to Tetsuo. The thought of sharing village secrets with a rogue ninja made her hesitate. She’d observed him protecting the innocents of the Fire Country when no else bothered. And for that he fit into a neat little exception for her. Though it formed the base of her fighting style in close quarters, Hanayo considered Strong Fist to be too straightforward and deliberate, but it seemed that little squabble in the swamp had left an impression. The fighting style was just the sort of honest discipline that would suit him.

“Very well," she said with a bemused laugh. She tugged the drawstring of her cloak loose and let the wind sweep it aside. “As much as I’ve enjoyed the change in scenery, I can’t stay here long. But I will provide you with a demonstration.” Sweeping a leg behind her, Hanayo dropped into stance and curled her fingers in a ‘come hither’ gesture.

Tetsuo listened closely as Hanayo spoke, his gaze steady and focused. When she shifted into her stance, he smirked—not with arrogance, but with curiosity. He took a moment to observe her posture, noting its lightness. Not a very sturdy stance, he thought. But maybe that’s not the point.

He adjusted his own stance in an attempt to mirror hers. The result was clumsy, unrefined—like a child mimicking a parent without truly understanding the intent behind the movement. His shoulders were stiff, his balance slightly off, but he held the pose nonetheless.

The space between them settled into silence. Tetsuo studied her, and then moved forward with a slow, controlled punch. It wasn’t meant to land. It was a test—a question posed through motion. He wanted to see how she would react. Would she block? Evade? Counter?

Tetsuo wasn’t new to combat. His training emphasized strength, precision, and structure. But Hanayo’s stance suggested something else—fluidity, adaptability, an ability to flow rather than resist. It wasn’t about brute force. It was about movement, timing, intent.

He watched closely, noting every detail: the subtle shift of her weight, the way her eyes tracked his motion, the calm stillness in her frame. He was already imagining her response before it came, each possibility playing out in his mind.

Beneath the calculated observation, something stirred—excitement. It had been a while since a sparring match felt unpredictable, alive with potential.

The punch paused just short of contact before he eased it back slightly. It was an offer, not a threat—an invitation to respond.

Tetsuo’s smirk remained, his body relaxed but ready.

Let’s see what you’ve got.

Hanayo tutted at the man’s stance. I know I don’t look that bad. She thought grimly. It was like staring into a warped mirror. Though, Her frame would always look dainty by comparison. He looked especially cramped trying to fit into the Strong Fist stance.

“Loosen up,” she ordered. Only because she valued education did she bother to correct him. She fell into a natural lecture mode– better to get it out of the way before the practical lesson began. “In traditional martial arts, power comes from a wide-legged stance. But Strong Fist is a bit different. It sacrifices the stability of a grounded base for fluidity, capable of launching strikes from any position, sometimes working inside of impossibly slim margins.“

She refrained from explaining in too much detail. Considering Tetsuo’s talent for violence far exceeded her own, Anything further would be unnecessary. Hanayo hoped she could provide the sort of demonstration he was after. But truthfully, she was fighting with an arm and leg behind her back.

All her memories of him were tangled with bone-breaking, blood-drawing, and battle cries. Back then, she hadn’t had time to observe him clearly. But now? She took the time to study his movements in the moment of stillness. It was a moment all fighters should recognize when the mind switches tracks from intellect to intuition. A rush in her ear, drum in her heart. Even the mountains felt the weight of anticipation. Hanayo swore she felt the ground trembling beneath her feet.

Tetsuo cut the tension as he tested her with a jab. “Tch. Be serious.” Hanayo growled under her breath. If the staredown was a fighter’s handshake, then the opening move was like the first word. The Hyuuga’s slow punch was almost insulting in its politeness.

The greatest advantage of her bladed stance was that it presented a smaller target. She used her lead hand and turned his jab away almost disdainfully. Stepping to his outside, she would bring her leg up and around his guard in a tight circle before dropping it on the crown of his head in an axe kick. The strike was pulled like Tetsuo’s, yet thrown with ferocity to emphasize Strong Fist’s dynamic nature.

There was no wasted movement in the effort, another tenet of the discipline. The style had no defensive forms. Every attack meant advancing or finding a means to improve her position. After her attempted strike, Hanayo set herself off to his side at a distance where she could react to a counter.

INTERESTING, he thought to himself as she stepped back to create distance. He reset his stance, mimicking her posture as best he could, her advice still fresh in his mind. Drawing in a deep breath, he exhaled slowly, allowing the tension in his body to ease. His balance wavered briefly, but he corrected it quickly—his form already improved on the second try.

She had been so close when she landed that kick. He was genuinely surprised she'd managed it with such limited space. The realization stirred something in him—he felt like an academy student again, a sensation he hadn’t experienced in years.

He’d lingered too long in place. Time to move.

He surged forward [36 Speed], closing the distance.
Prepare yourself. I'm going to hit you this time, he said with a grin.

He threw a kick, trying to replicate the one she’d used before. Though his aim was to strike, he held back enough to show restraint [40 Strength]. The motion was clumsy, a far cry from her precision—but it was a start.

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

Post by Dual » Sat Apr 19, 2025 8:51 pm

The crack of the blow echoed off the canyon walls. Hanayo held back a wince as she felt her heel connect. It was like kicking stone- and she was very familiar with the sensation. Through years of conditioning, she’d strengthened her bones, but rocks never get softer. She stole the chance to rest on her back foot and returned to her stance. “Let’s skip the warm-up, Tetsuo. You can go all out. I’m tougher than I look.”

Tetsuo began his offense with a burst of speed. Hanayo charged in rather than wait. He was not the only one mimicking and as the two fighters closed, Hanayo stayed off center. Moving from side to side, cutting him off at angles, doing her best to avoidplacing herself in front of his powerful strikes.

Seeing the arc his kick would take, she stopped short and watched it pass. Her eyes widened as she felt the wind rushing behind it. I’m tough, but not that tough. If it wasn’t for his unease with the technique, he might have taken her head off. The woman wasn’t sure she could block and keep her footing.
No matter, he was off-balance. Seeking to capitalize in the tight space, Hanayo would feint high before whipping a punch towards his open midsection. She needed to exploit the weaknesses while she could. There was a marked difference in his skill from the swamp to now. Hanayo knew that if Tetsuo could sustain this rate of growth, he’d surpass her before long.

Whether or not her punch landed Hanayo would pivot on a heel, appearing at his shoulder to send a well-spaced lead front kick at his hip. All her attacks flowed in a coordinated fashion, though there was a rote stiffness undermining the combination's grace. It was subtle, but she had a habit of always attacking opposite from where her last hit landed in a clockwise pattern. Old habits die hard, especially under pressure.

Hanayo was fast and her strikes were strong. Tetsuo took the hits, studying her movements. This style was interesting—fluid, deliberate. Every strike wasn’t just meant to damage, but to lead somewhere. Positioning. Angles. It wasn’t a brawl; it was a conversation of motion, and she was fluent.

He took the body shot, letting it push him back slightly, more from choice than force. Her follow-up kick clipped his hip, but he stayed standing, already turning his torso to track her next move.

Too hard, he realized with a furrowed brow. His kicks were sharp, brutal—still too much. That last one had nearly taken her head off. Even holding back, he hit like a battering ram. If he didn’t dial it down further, sparring with him would become a liability. I’ve gotta find the line, he thought. A hair softer. Precision over force.

As she reset, he took a slow breath, rolling his shoulders. Then, mimicking the same shifting footwork Hanayo had used, he tried to cut the angle in a similar fashion. It was... clunky. His balance was off. He favored power over form, and it showed. The feint he attempted came out more like a stutter step, and the punch that followed lacked her smooth transition. His body wanted to muscle through it, not flow with it.

Still, the intention was there—an effort to learn, not just fight.

“Like that, right?” he asked mid-motion, lips tugging in a grin as he nearly tripped over his own feet from the overextension.

He’d get it eventually. But for now, he was a storm trying to learn the rhythm of a stream.

Hanayo bounced on her toes, staying limber during the pauses. The two hardly exchanged words between blows but that was fine, encouraged even. They didn’t need to when the air was filled with the brutal language of a fight; grunts, groans, and short utterances of ‘kiai’. It was a primitive means of communication, but they were somehow coming to understand each other. Perhaps, Hanayo more so than him.

When Hanayo was first forced to learn the style, she sulked often. Believing her training to be a waste, since she would never be able to match the taller, stronger ninja in her class. ‘Use their power against them,’ would be her sensei’s useless platitude. Hanayo remembered feeling mature when she ignored him and accepted reality. After all, everyone had limits whether they were biological or otherwise. But now it clicked in her head. Power was a mindset. Placing undue emphasis on one area revealed vulnerabilities in another. Her opponents could be defeated by their own strength. Watching Tetsuo now, seeing how he loaded his swings, the unnatural effort he put into disguising his attacks... Why would you need to learn how to feint when the threat of your power and speed was enough for most opponents? This tournament, or whatever he was getting himself into, would be a less test of strength and more strategy for him.

Her gaze quickly turned to one of medical concern as the Hyuuga began to imitate her movements. “Don’t waste so much energy. Strong Fist thrives on efficiency.” She called, circling left of his attack with ordered steps. “Otherwise, you’ll find out how a stream cuts through a mountain.”

So far, she had done her best to dodge his attempted strikes, but this time she used her lead hand to guide his away. Tipping him as he stumbled on the follow-through. Ordinarily, that would have been enough. But she wanted the lesson to get through his hard skull. Even if it demanded a bit more force. Without giving him a moment to recover, Hanayo chased the man with a leaping kick [14 Strength]. It was a means to an end. Carrying her across the gap between them [40 Speed] and setting up another violent leg towards his side [20 Strength].

Post by AFungalNetwork » Sun Apr 20, 2025 10:37 pm

Tetsuo took each blow in stride. Every kick, every punch, brought him closer to understanding. But this latest onslaught had caught him off guard. He was strong and fast but his balance needed improvement. So, when Hanayo delivered the flying kick, he collapsed to the ground. I think I'm starting to get it now. he said, picking himself up off the ground and dusting himself off.

He carefully assumed the stance again, this time it was almost identical to Hanayo's. Third times the charm, I guess. he thought as he tried to recount what she had just done to him. I need more. with that thought he moved toward Hanayo, getting close enough to hear her breathing but not so close that she would feel uncomfortable. He listens intently to her breath as he swings his fist toward; missing entirely but that wasn't the point. If he was going to learn this style, he needed to learn everything about it. How someone breaths during a style is incredibly important and he needed to know. Does she hold her breath before she strikes? Does she have slow, controlled breaths that explode out as she strikes?

With his missed punch, he allowed himself to show an opening; and he waited. And listened.

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

Hanayo bared her teeth as the big man fell. She’d never boast, but that knockdown felt earned. Now that she was finding her rhythm, she moved with fluid efficiency. Another advantage of a slimmer figure– it was easier to conserve her energy.

“Oh?” she hummed, as the giant drew himself back to his full height and said he was starting to get it. Her nostrils flared in amusement. He did show improvement. And if nothing else, Hanayo was happy to see he wasn’t feeling discouraged. He closed again and Hanayo beckoned him ‘come’.

His shoulders turned. On instinct, Hanayo lurched out of the way, predicting the punch. It was a subconscious suspicion that made her question why he threw the strike bare? Had she misread him? Perhaps fallen for his hustle? But looking up, she saw it in his blank eyes– he was searching for something. The woman was unsure what it might be, but the intensity was there. She couldn’t help but smirk at the hint of how serious he was taking this.

Over the entirety of their spar, Hanayo had punished his mistakes, chaining strikes. This was no different. After dodging outside to his left, Hanayo would seize the opportunity close quarters provided to plant her feet. Starting the swing in her hips, Hanayo braced her arm in an attempt to drive a vicious elbow into the same hip she’d been battering. The aim was to test his balance. If he was starting to grasp the technique, as he claimed, it would be easy to dodge, twice as easy to brace against the hit. Either way, Hanayo would convert the momentum into a shove to reassert her stance and spacing. If he kept both feet on the ground, then Hanayo would continue her barrage, pushing off with her lead leg to launch an explosive knee into Tetsuo’s open chest.

When fighting in close quarters it becomes difficult to generate energy for full powered strikes. Practitioners have learned how to explode force from every muscle with minimal energy wasted and space needed. Every strike done by the practitioner has the potential to be at full strength, so long as they have at least one inch of movement.

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

He listened as she dodged the attack and as she launched her counter attack. He saw the elbow coming and imitated her breathing as he attempted to dodge it [36 speed]. Then the barrage came, this time he once again didn't attempt a dodge. Instead, he continued to listen to her breathing, he studied her form. Her continued blows were starting to wear him down. He was durable but even he had his limit.

He exhaled slowly. Focused. Tuned in to her rhythm.

Then, he moved.

Tetsuo shifted his footing, mimicking the neutral stance she had shown—Balance. One foot turned, toes brushing the ground, hands positioned just like hers. Perpendicular, patient, prepared. His body flowed with surprising grace for his build, tension melted into readiness.

Perpendicular for flow... he muttered, almost to himself. "To move without wasted motion."

Her next movement barely had time to manifest before he launched forward, body twisting into a fluid arc. His leg snapped up—
Rising Leaf Wind—a kick not meant to hurt, but to show. In that moment, Tetsuo moved again.

He advanced with the rhythm of his strikes—short, sharp punches that didn’t give her time to reset. Every motion carried him forward, closing space.
Dynamic Action.
There was no room to breathe, no room to think. Just pressure. Constant, pulsing pressure. He twisted around to her side. His foot hit the ground, pivoting sharply. Another kick lashed out.
Great Leaf Whirlwind.

But he didn’t stop.

Each attack flowed into the next, a dance of force and form. Tetsuo’s fist coiled tight, his whole frame compressed like a spring. Then—
A single, focused strike exploded from his shoulder down to his knuckles. Stopping just short of her face.
One Inch Punch.
None of his moves connected, but he hadn't intended them to. He just wanted her to see. To know.

He stood in front of her, panting and sweating. This style was nothing like he was used to and he was tired. But he was smiling, happy. He felt like he had really understood. Like he had learned.

How was that? he said between strained breaths.

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

Overconfidence will make you do crazy things. Attempting to bully a physically stronger and taller sparring partner was one of them. Hanayo realized she’d been tricked into a false sense of security when Tetsuo reversed the offensive. A subtle change. One moment she noticed his hips opening then– kick! She met his blow with her guard raised; elbows tight, Bang! Even softened the blow made her knees quake, legs almost sliding out from under her. She’d shake the sting from her bones later. For now, he was pressing forward and it was too late to escape.

She weathered the storm. Trapped in close quarters, hair whipping past her face, Hanayo could only perceive his barrage in rushing images. Every second brought a fistful of information faster than her mind could process. Hanayo trusted instinct. He was no longer overcommitting with his attacks, but Hanayo could see the power chambered in each attempt and braced through preemptive action. Hanayo interrupted swings at the elbow joint or pressed the flat of her palm into his strikes, redirecting the energy before it landed. Her stance remained tight, stepping at appropriate angles to defend but he was pushing her back with the relentless pressure.

Sweat crawled down her cheek as he transitioned from the flurry of blows to a kick faster than she could recover. Who knew a man his size could be so agile. The miscalculation cost her. As her heel touched the edge of their sparring ground, She tried to dodge his fist, flinching as it appeared an inch from her nose.

“Better,” She said through grit teeth pushing his fist away. All snark aside, she was a tad bit rattled after being spared the avalanche of attacks. The question of what would have happened if he hadn’t fluttered in her heart. Had she created a monster? A smile cut across her face. Then it was an experiment gone horribly right.

Hanayo rolled her shoulder as she reset, the bruises along her arm had already healed in the brief pause. Good sparring was hard to come by in the Leaf. And she didn't want the opportunity to go to waste. The refining process helped her find her upper limits and exceed them. “But we’re not finished yet. Once more, let’s see you put it all together.”

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

The moment Hanayo reset, Tetsuo mirrored her, sliding into the Balance stance he'd tried over and over. Back straight, body turned, one foot barely grazing the ground. He was trying. Really trying.

It was easy to see though—the tension just under the surface. The way his muscles coiled, like a beast barely restrained by form. But he knew what the form required, how he needed to move.

From neutral to motion in a blink, Rising Leaf Wind lashed out, the speed nearly folding the space between them. But the power—he held back. It was a glancing breeze instead of a hurricane. Disruptive, not destructive.

Tetsuo slid in, pressing the rhythm with Dynamic Action. A half-step became a full press. He let instinct pour into the flow—Great Leaf Whirlwind followed, but clipped. Sharp, efficient, and—most importantly—controlled. His foot struck to the side of her, then pivoted. Disappearing behind her and loosing a flurry of light punches around her guard. [20 Strength]

He felt the urge to overwhelm—let loose. But Hanayo's presence was like gravity, anchoring him to the purpose behind each strike. Not domination. Discipline.

At close range, he pulsed out a strike with barely an inch of space. One Inch Punch. It stopped just before her chest.

He paused, breath steady, sweat beading along his temple.

“I get it now,” he said, lowering his arm slowly. “Strength’s only part of it.”

His voice was calm, but the look in his eyes was different—focused, even reverent.

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

Echoes of the blows faded. A few pebbles skittered away in the quiet. The round had ended as before, with Hanayo on the receiving end of a pulled punch.
“Yes, well, strength is still a very important part,” Hanayo said, her chest heaving. Even after disengaging from combat, her lungs refused to fill. Hard to say if it was the altitude or the challenge itself.

She bowed, a sign that their spar had concluded. Hanayo was no expert in Taijutsu and Tetsuo had pushed her instruction to its limit. She lacked the strength for Strong Fists more advanced maneuvers, and for that she was apologetic. Any further pushing might pass on bad habits. But at least Tetsuo appeared satisfied.

Their efforts were far from fruitless, however. Hanayo thought. Tetsuo had become proficient in the basics of the discipline, flowing through the dynamic movements— and all without stumbling once, a marked improvement. His control and grace brought to mind the Hyuuga’s renowned Gentle Fist.

Her mind pivoted towards her prize and the purpose of her visit: the Deepcaller’s tongue. “You know, you surprised me, Tetsuo,” Hanayo said once she could speak without gasping for breath. “A mission to apprehend a missing nin?” the jounin flashed a fanged grin at the deception. Being a shinobi was a dirty line of work, but some of the Merchant's filth had rubbed off on him too. “It was clever bait, though in our line of work, we usually communicate through proper channels.”

“The next time you want my attention, seek out a man named Manako Majii.” She was reluctant to drag him down further into the muck, but there was an element of self-protection as well. “He’s dead. Buried in a family tomb in Tea Country. Every few moons I pay my respects at his last resting place; sweep the headstones, leave a gift, and sometimes take one... It’s slow, inconvenient, but secure. No one asks questions at graveyards.”

Muscles and a Tongue (Training, Tetsuo and Hanayo)

Tetsuo flashed a quick smile. I value this relationship we have and I would hate for you to get into trouble because of me. his tone was gentle but serious. He walked over to the vat holding the putrid limb, picked it up and walked it over to her.

I'll remember the name, the next time I find myself in need of your assistance. he handed the vial to her and began walking her to the exit. His expression shifted from amused acquaintance to something Hanayo had not seen on him before— worry. He walked in silence for a few minutes, the air heavy with unspoken words. Words he wanted to speak. Things he wasn't sure how to phrase. Until finally he stopped and turned to face her. His expression extra serious, he normally looked like a man in his 40s but this expression aged him.

One of these days, I'm going to entrust you with something very valuable — a gift. Even if you can't use it yourself, I know you'll find the best way to put it to use. I don't know what the outcome of that day will be... but whatever happens, one thing will be certain: after that day, I will no longer be Tetsuo Hyuuga.
You could have turned me in that day with the boar. I was unconscious, couldn't even stand — but you didn't. And even now, you're taking a big risk just by humoring me.
They had reached the entrance to the cave system but he continued.
I give back to my friends. If you ever need me, or my associates, come find us at the headquarters of the Defiant Order. And know, there's always a place for you there, should the world ever turn upside down on you too.
With that, he pulled out a folded cloth map and handed it over, the directions to the headquarters carefully marked.
