Missing Pages Caper!

Post by Awesem » Wed Sep 02, 2009 4:32 pm

The house was abandoned, just the way they had left it. The books were still strewn across the floor, burn marks all over the place. It almost had an eerie quality to it. The doors creaked from years of non-use, cobwebs covered the ceilings. There was one book, however, that seemed to stand out among the rest. For one thing, it wasn't ripped or thrown onto the floor. The other thing was that it was hidden.

A plethora of emotion filled Rai's heart as he entered the abandoned household. He choked back his tears. Not just tears of sadness, but tears of anger. Rai glanced around the book strewn room. He sank to the floor and wept. The charred remains of furniture and the red sign that condemned his childhood home seemingly glaring at the boy. He looked up and noticed a sight more horrific than any other imaginable. A reddish spot no the floor where Rai was certain his father had been slain. A trail of red splotches he assumed were bloody footprints led away from the pool and out the back door. Rai looked to Soku

"It's more horrible than I remember"

Soku only responded with the slightest of nods. He was afraid that if he replied he would end up saying something that he would later regret. It was easier for him to keep his emotions bottled up, it always had been.

The books scattered throughout the store brought back bitter and painful memories of the night that a group of thugs had busted into their home, had killed their father, and had taken their mother. But they took more than that on that horrible night. They had taken Soku and Rai's lives and had forced them to scrounge up a meager and pathetic life on the streets.

God help those thugs if Soku ever got his hands on them. There wouldn't be enough of them left to fit into a matchbox.

"Well, let's start looking for those missing pages. Mom's diary has to have some information on that gang that did this." Soku said quietly, his voice was emotionless and hollow. It even surprised himself a little to hear the sound of it.

Without hesitation Soku began rummaging through the shelves upon shelves of books that were still sitting sitting on the racks. Many of them had so much dust covering them that he had to blow across the pages to recognize what was written on them.

There were no pages that Soku could find that seemed to be from his mother's diary. Maybe they were somewhere else...

OOC: This part is basically you guy's trying to find out where I would put them in a bookshop. I will post what your findings bring whenever you search at X spot. Goodluck.

(OOC: Screw the posting order, if Sparx isn't going to post I will.)

Soku grunted in frustration as he reached the last book lining the shelves in his father's old shop. Though he wanted to hurl the ruined book across the room out of anger, Soku simply placed the blue and white leatherbound novel back in its place. There was no point to cause any more damage, it would just make him feel worse.

Without a word to his brother, the special jounin quickly climbed the stairs leading to the shop's second story. His mind was wracked with wave after wave of emotions as he climbed the dusty stairs leading to his bedroom. As he reached the first door on the right Soku was surprised to see that the door leading to Rai and his own room was still intact. He paused for a moment to prepare himself for what he knew was going to be the hardest room to enter in the entire house.

After a few seconds and a deep breath, Soku pushed the door open and stepped inside. His eyes widened as the image of his old room spread before him. Compared to everything else in the house, this room seemed relatively untouched by both time and scarred blackness. Doing his best to push all of the memories he experienced from his youth to the back of his mind, Soku began rummaging around for any signs of his mother's diary.

OOC: Since Sparx told me himself he is leaving the thread, lets just assume his nin got an urgent call from the kage for a mission.
There was no diary pages to be found. Then again, why would his mother hide her diary in his room?

After realizing his mother's diary was nowhere to be found in his old bedroom, Soku's resolve failed him. With a scream full of frustration and anger the special jounin grabbed one of his favorite childhood toys and hurled it across the room. The toy crashed into the old, tarnished mirror on the opposite side of the room, causing both the toy and the mirror to shatter. Sharp, jagged pieces of glass and plastic fell to the carpet below. He stared at the dozens of small reflections of himself littering the floor, almost as if the eyes staring back were silently judging him.

"Mom and dad wouldn't want to see me like this." Soku thought to himself after taking a few deep breaths and getting a grip on his anger. The special jounin silently slipped out of his childhood room, not even bothering to close the door behind him.

The next room he entered was nearly as upsetting as the last, the special jounin wasn't surprised to see his parents' old room burnt and ripped to shreds. Those bastards that took his old life away must have searched the room before they set fire to the house, probably in the hope of finding his family's life savings. The image of those goons ripping apart all that his father had worked so hard to gain in a matter of minutes nearly caused him to go into yet another fit of rage, but this time he managed to control himself and walk calmly into the room.

He began looking in and around any piece of furniture left in the room. Dressers, the closet, his parents' bed, nothing in the room was ignored.

There was not much left to search, and it looked like all the pages that were even in there were burned. It seemed like there was nothing in there, except.... wait. What is that glinting underneath the burned bed? Between the lining there seems to be a...... key? Did mother hide this?

Soku's fingers gripped around the small, metal key he had found lying under his mother's bed. It wasn't a diary, but the special jounin was glad he had at least found something in his parents' room. He silently inspected the simple looking key and tried to think of what it could possibly open.

It could have been the key for the entrance to the store's underground basement, which was located outside behind the shop. Or it could even be the key for their lockbox where they kept their valuables. But Soku highly doubted that something like that was still lying around, considering those thugs had ransacked the entire house for anything that looked remotely valuable. A small, locked box would have attracted their attention like a corpse attracts flies.

So, with no other clue to what the key could unlock, Soku made his way back down the stairs and out the front door. He circled around the store and, after fighting his way through the mess that was their old lawn, found the entrance to the basement. He knelt down and looked at the key, then back at the lock hanging from the small, wooden door's handle. "Here goes nothing." Soku said to himself as he placed the small, metal key into the keyhole and turned his hand.

The lock made a slight click as the key turned. The door opened with a slight creaking sound, revealing the contents within. The room was sparsely decorated, only a slight frilly decoration lining the top of the walls, which were painted blue. There was hardly any furniture as well, just a table and a single chair within the room. The thing standing out, however, was the small box on top of the table.

What could be inside?

Soku slowly descended the stairs leading into the basement. Years of neglect had left the planks he was stepping on weak and noisy, every step caused a resounding creaking noise to ring throughout the rest of the basement. If there was anyone lying in wait for Soku to walk into the underground room, the special jounin was doing a lousy job of being discreet.

His eyes scanned the room quickly and silently, looking for anything that could be hiding his mother's secret diary. When his charcoal grey eyes fell upon the small, metal box lying on the table, however, his entire body froze. He stared at the simple looking box for a good thirty seconds before walking over to it and placing a shaking hand on top of it.

"Why am I so scared?" Soku thought to himself as his hand finally steadied against the box's lid. "I was more than ready for this a minute ago... why do I feel this way all of a sudden?"

The special jounin sighed as his face became determined and focused. He had made it this far, a few butterflies in his stomach wasn't going to keep him from learning the truth. Without a word, Soku opened the top of the box and peered inside.

What could possibly be inside the box? Can it be a map, leading to exactly where she has been hiding for all of these years? Will it be her journal, where she puts all of her feelings about what is going to happen, will happen, and where she was taken, and by who? Or even, will it hold the location of her dead body?

"A note?" Soku asked himself quietly, his eyes and brow narrowing with annoyance. He was tired of these games, he was tired of waiting for answers. This note was working on his last nerve, and after it snapped nothing in the house would be safe or sacred to him. He would tear it to the ground to find his mother's missing pages.

The special jounin picked up the encrypted note and silently read it to himself. He could already guess at a few of the words hidden within the message. The word uloorboare could only represent "floorboards," and Uoom could only mean "look" or "room." He went with look, seeing how this message was probably a clue to where his mother's diary was hidden.

But other than that, Soku couldn't make heads or tails of the note. He spent a good five minutes staring at the words, trying to find some sort of pattern or key to unlocking the code. Suddenly his eyes widened a little as he realized the first and last letter of every word were scrambled and shifted throughout the message. The special jounin pulled out a small pencil from his ninja pouch and quickly copied the encrypted message on the back of the note.

"Look... under... the floorboard... another under..." Soku muttered as he slowly revealed the note's hidden message. His heart was pounding loudly in his ears as his mind worked, he was so close to finding his answers that he was wracked with anticipation.

"Another and, iee... if I put the b here... bed, look under the floorboard under the bed. Who's bed, goddammit?" He cursed his mother for leaving him this note, she should have known that Soku wasn't exactly the best problem solver in the world.

"Wait... in her bedroom?" Soku's expression was riddled with confusion as he finished decoding the message, but not because he didn't understand what it was trying to tell him. By using the word "her," it was clear that his mother wasn't the one who left him this note. But who else could have? Was this some sort of trap?

Soku sighed and slipped the note into his shirt's chest pocket before exiting the basement, closing and locking the door behind him, and heading back into the house and up the stairs to his mother's room. With a grunt the special jounin moved his parents' bed away from the wall and into the center of the room. He got down to his knees and began searching for a loose floorboard, or at least one that sounded hollow.

A small gasp escaped his lips as his fingers ran along one of the boards, shifting it slightly out of the way. Without a second thought, Soku carefully removed the floorboard and looked into the gap it's absence created.
