The mountains of Kumogakure are a dangerous place for the unwise. The rising sun provides the perfect ambiance for the beginning of a hunt. Your mission begins at a mid point between the grazing grounds and the herders home is a myriad of hoof and bloodstained paw prints. Signs of frantic excitement and danger. It's your job to track down these animals, and kill the beast responsible for this or Kumogakure's economy will suffer. There is absolutely no time to waste, get to the scene of the attack and begin your hunt for the vile beast that's done this and recover the remainder of the flock.

Takihime stood prepared, listening intently to the brief being given to her. She was a huge fan of the outdoors, and to be assigned such a mission made her excited. She liked to hunt regardless, albeit smaller animals, now this would just be bigger prey.

As soon as she knew what to do, she turned, grabbed both of her sai from her weapons pouch, gripping them more firmly than ever before. She bound forward, adjusting her pace as to not tire herself out, following the trail of bloody footprints before her. The hunt was on.

The forest was silent, not a single bird or insect stirred, something had silenced nature itself. The mountain lion had definitely enjoyed an early lunch. The remnants of its hastily eaten meal were strewn across the path, a puddle of blood surrounded a torn carcass.

Otherwise, the area is completely vacant. The paw prints had vanished, though the distinct scent of blood was wafting down into the area from above, towering above the canopy of trees was a vast mountain range. Perfect for playful goats or a stalking beast. Clearly, something had enticed the lion to leave this half-eaten body behind. Was it something higher on the food chain, or more prey. There a vast amount of possibilities that only a hunter with discerning capabilities would be able to realize.

Though, along with the threatening scent, another sense was calling for your attention. BAAAAAH! That distinctly annoying bray of a mountain goat could be heard in the almost exact opposite direction of the smell of blood. Will you forgo killing the beast to catch one of the goats?

Takihime came to a steady halt when she came to what was definitely the bloody leftovers of the lions lunch. She looked around, hoping to spot some of the paw prints, but had no luck. She did, however, smell something she was becoming unusually familiar with, the smell of blood. How very distinct it was.

Just as she was about to take off in the direction of the bloody smell, she heard what could be none other than one of the goats. She hesitated for a moment, and thought to herself.

Surely she had to save the goats, but if she had to risk one in order to save the rest from the lion eating them all, it had to be done. For all she knew, the goat could've just been startled by a field mice or hit it's head on a loose branch. They weren't the brightest of creatures. The smell of blood was so strong, she knew the beast had to be somewhere nearby. It might even be stalking one of the other goats. She couldn't lose this opportunity. She knew where she was going.

Taking in a deep breath in order to get a true idea of where the scent was, she eyed an area, knives still in hand, and leaped towards the trees, heading for the mountain range.

Two of the stray mountain goats had been intelligent enough to seek higher ground after being separated from the herd. They were naturally evolved to be able to reach great heights, especially on the sheer face of a cliff they were precariously scrabbling up now. However, mountain lions were inclined towards heights, though the predator was much too clumsy to balance itself on the barely foot wide rocks jutting from the cliff. Like all predators end up doing, it lay in weight at plateau above its prey, pacing back and forth, gathering its courage for a leap.

The livestock were metaphorical cats stuck up trees, going back down would mean that the lion could simply chase them easier, and devour them. Going up meant they would reach the same fate. Standing absolutely still at least prolonged their life. The mountain goats were almost four stories up, a drop from this height would mean certain death for them, and the lion. This stalemate could only be broken by divine intervention.

Takihime finally came to a spot where she could see 2 of the goats, with the mountain lion in wait right above them. It was just a matter of time before the lion would reach them. She took a second to muster the chakra to her feet. She wasn't as adept at this as she would like to be, but she did know how to do it.

She leaped carefully onto the mountain side, finding the flattest rocks she possibly could to balance herself on. She took a second or so to adjust, and them began making her way up the mountain, carefully leaping about 3 yards at a time until she was about 2 stories up, the lion and goats up and towards her left, being very careful to not alert the lion too much.

She leaned over a bit, gripping one of the rocks in front of her just to let her refocus her chakra again. She felt the grip fine, but she knew when the action started, she might lose grip, ever so slightly. She had gone just high enough where she'd be able to land without hurting herself should it happen.

She stood straight up again, holstering her kunai in her weapons pouch. She grabbed 2 of the kunai from the holster, and one of the shuriken. Takihime placed one of the kunai in her mouth. Taking a second to aim properly, she threw the shuriken arcing outwards, aiming at the lions face. Immediately after, she threw her second kunai at the lion, aiming directly at him. Should the lion leap at the goats, she prepped to throw her second kunai at the lion whilst he/she was in midair.

The mountain lion hungrily growled at its prey, barely noticing the scent on the wind of… A hound and human? The smells intertwined seamlessly, and the beast drooled onto the heads of the frightened cattle. When the animal finally saw the new prey it bared its enormous fangs still soaked red from its last meal. It was another creature he couldn’t reach, but who seemed to be able to fly towards him. Excitedly, the beasts tail wagged a hunger imbuing it with the confidence to make the leap towards the fleshy newcomer.

That was until it saw the black saucer flying towards him out of the corner of its eye. It shrieked loudly when the weapon cut across his right eye, blood squirting from the wound. Driven by instinct it scampered away from the edge of the cliff and in the opposite direction of it's curious attacker. He would get revenge later.

You’ve scared off the mountain lion, but now there is another dilemma. The simple-minded goat leaped from rock to rock, scaling the cliff at almost twice your speed. They had lost sight of the lion, and in their minds that meant it no longer existed. The lion was gone, choosing to recover from its wound than snack on another goat, but if the goats manage to escape, even worse problems may arise.

Yes!

Takihime gave a small fist pump in victory as the shuriken hit it's mark, scaring the mountain lion away. Perhaps not the kill she was looking for, but it had served its purpose none the less.

The victory was short lived, however, as the goats began to leap away from her much faster than she could keep up with, especially cliff-side."Hey no! Wait! That's the wrong way!"

Not having much time to think otherwise, she leaped off the mountain side and back onto the ground, and began to run full speed alongside the mountain, making her best effort to keep the goats in view. She might not be able to catch them, but she hoped she was at least fast enough to keep them in sight long enough where they'd get tired and come to a halt.

One of the frantically running goats veered off to the left, some instinct had told it that abandoning its friend for the slaughter was the best choice. This seemingly intelligent animal fell victim to stupidity in the end. The ground beneath its feet seemed to vanish as instead of running away from its partner, it simply marched off of the cliff face. The stunned beast cried in shock and fear, while its partner was more preoccupied with escape than the death of another. Choosing to save the falling animal meant the other would escape, but with the animals stamina it could run for days with you following it.

Takihime knew goats were stupid, but to the extent of how stupid they were she had no idea, watching the goat seemingly run into the air, falling down. Almost instinctively, she leaped up into the air, towards the goat. She managed to grab it, the weight and momentum of the goat sending her crashing down to the floor with a thud, Takihime using her body to break the goats fall.

She landed almost perfectly flat, the pain in her body surging, but bearable. At least I managed to catch one., she thought to herself, knowing that assuredly the other goat must've escaped. Oh, well. On to the next one.

She stood, taking a second or so to dust herself off, thinking of her next plan of action.

"Baaaaaah." thanked the goat. With nine more of these creatures roaming the forest, and no way to corral them, Takihime was in a dire situation. There tons of signs in the forest, trampled leaves, abandoned clumps of wool and the echoing cries of sheep throughout the woods. These hints were spread out through every cardinal direction, there was little hint to which was the closest, or which would yield the most of the dispersed flock. The sky above rocked with the sound of thunder, murderous storm clouds were a bad omen, and maybe even a clue in your hunt. Where would stupid animals go when threatened with a violent storm?

Takihime smiled ever so slightly. She had saved one of the goats, she had 9 more to go.

She lifted up the goat, and stumbled over to one of the grassier areas she could find, using the area as a landmark, at the same time hoping that the goat would find enough grass and what not to keep himself occupied while she went around searching for the other goats.

She lied down for a little bit, looking up at the sky, trying to gather her thoughts. A storm's coming she thought to herself, noticing the swirling clouds, and the echo of thunder in the distance.

I should probably get back to flat land. Knowing these stupid goats, they're probably climbing up the mountain and towards the lightning instead of going away from it.

She sat up in anticipation, realizing the epiphany she'd just had. She jumped to her feet, and turned towards the mountain, looking up the cliff. She couldn't leave the goat alone though.

She smacked the goat on its ass, nudging it in the direction of the mountain. It'd be a slow, long walk, but it had to be done, Takihime and hew new animal companion heading up towards the peak.

The goat seemed almost overjoyed to be cared for by a new shepherd. It was constantly bahing and skipping up the mountain. This part of the mountain wasn't nearly as arduous as the other side, a slanted mass of gravel made it an easy hike. However, time was not a luxury in this mission, the storm clouds released the downpour in a flash. This skyward flood mixed with bolt of lightning caused the goat to shriek wildly, clinging closer to its new master. At the same time, a number of cries echoed across the mountain side. More of the lost flock. The sound emanated from a tight crevice cut into the mountain. Maybe these animals weren't so dumb after all.

Takihime smiled, and rubbed the goats head comfortingly as the downpour began. "You'll be ok buddy.". The rain had seem to catch full stride, and Takihime was now soaked from head to toe. Her hear hung heavily at her sides, her ears poking through. She shivered a little because of the cold rain. This was just another day in the Kumo mountains.

As she headed up the mountain, she stopped under a large arched tree, which would provide her and her goat friend enough cover for the time being. After about a few seconds, she heard a noise nearby. She took a second to focus, and recognized it was the signature "bah" of a goat.

Tugging on the goat she'd managed to catch again, she walked closer and closer to the sound, to where finally she recognized it as coming from a cave a few meters away. She walked over to it, making sure to lead the goat behind her, and walked in.

The cave was a winding network of tunnels that's complex web caused echoes to be amplified in all directions. Each route was pitch black, and the bleating of the goat that seemed to come from every only added to the confusion. Discovering a way to the lost goat would be difficult, but a ninja was an expert in finding their way through chaotic messes like this. Of course, there was the chance that there would only be a single goat in the entire mountain passage, would it be worth it to waste so much time?

Takihime looked at the massive cave and frowned a little bit. It's going to take foreeeeeeeever to find these goats. For a second, she almost considered laving the cave. With the massive amount of caves and different walls, she considered that there might even be just one goat in these entire caves. Was it worth it?

Two goats are better than one goat, I suppose.

She walked forward, making sure her little goat friend would find her. Her doggy ears perked up, as she focused on the source of the sound. It took her about 2 minutes, but she finally had come up with a guess. It was coming loudest from the left, and it would seemingly go there first. She found a small opening, and began walking through it, making sure her lone goat companion was following her every step of the way.

This random decision proved fruitful, when a certain white fleece appeared just around a corner. It also became apparent that the tunnel had eventually become too small, the squealing goat had deep into the cavern only to embed itself between two rocks. It's constant flailing and baaing knocked loose rocks onto its head from above and its white pelt had been sullied with dirt. The more the creature moved, the worse its condition became, but in the near complete darkness, it didn't realize that moving forward would only trap it in a dead end, or that the the tunnel was close to collapsing at any moment.

Takihime continued to follow the sounds of the animal till' she finally heard no more echo. The goat had to be near. In the darkness, it was a little difficult to tell, but she heard the baas and simply followed them.

Flailing her hands about in front of her, she finally felt the familiar fleece of a goat. It felt soiled, but hearing the baah of the goat so near to her, and the soft fleece in her hands, she knew this hand to be it. She came closer, hoping to see the head of the goat, letting her eyes adjust to the sunlight.

To her surprise, she had her hands gripped firmly on the butt of the goat. She made a face, moving her hands away. "C'mon buddy, we're going back home."

Simply hearing the goat bah even more, she noticed another thing. In all the goats flailing, there were several large rocks falling onto to the goats back. Stupid animals. "Hey bud, we're going, c'mon.", she said, pulling slightly on the fleece to try and get him to turn around Yet he didn't.

She peaked closer, squinted, and finally realized the problem. He was wedged between 2 rocks. She raised a curious eye brow, pondering how one could even find themselves in a situation like that. No matter, now was not the time. She had to get him now, and go find the other goats. But how? She couldn't smash rocks. Not yet, anyway.

Her eyes lit up suddenly with a realization. She grabbed a kunai, and began to cut off the hind portion of the goats fleece. She tucked a small bit of it in her weapons pouch, for memories, but let the rest fall to the floor. She did this with haste, the bundles all falling down, Takihime realizing that she hadn't realized just how much fur the goat had.

Finally, the lower half of the goat almost completely naked, she grabbed the same kunai and poked him slightly in the butt, hoping that with his new found nakedness, he'd be able to jerk his way out of his conundrum.

Getting sheared by a weapon commonly used for cutting the throats of human beings was traumatizing for the young goat. It moved madly, not realizing that its movements were not only bringing down most of the rocks but also freeing it from the rocky trap it had found itself subjected to. Its tormentor was actually its savior. The animal bleated a final time before it kicked its way free and fell forward, landing in the tight rocky cell. Slowly, its mind worked and urged him to turn and leap through the space he had been locked in. The flabby goat skipped around its hero.

Now reunited with its best pal, the two goats headbutted each other than bah'd with elation. Two down, only eight more to go, and then... the final foe. Outside the storm was still raging, and the flock was out there somewhere. Only intelligence would help you find the rest of the goats before the tiger did.

Takihime smiled with glee when the 2 goats headbutted each other. She was elated... 2 down, only 8 more to go. She guided the 2 goats to the entrance if the cave, the downpour outside not having ceased in the slightest. She stopped, meditating on the rain contemplating her next move.

She finally stepped outside, making sure the 2 goats followed her, as they followed the trail up the mountain, hoping that somewhere along the rain, she'd perhaps run into another cave, or that the goats would've simply darted up the mountain in some sort of instinctive panic.

Takihime, drenched from head to toe now, looked back at the goats, their fur even more water absorbent than her shinobi garbs, as they continued their trek up the mountain.

This lion was unlike any of its breed, it's domain at the peak was completely undisturbed by other predators and certainly not its prey. Nature itself gave him a wide berth, coming towards the beast was a death wish. And in snacking on the previous creatures that had wandered much too close to him, he had startled a challenger for the top of the food chain. The dog-human. Despite the storm the scent of wandering morsels wafted up to his perch. Revenge and dinner. The beast licked its lips, expertly leaping from rock to rock. It was time yet again for battle.

A third goat slept contently underneath a rocky overhang, its fleece rising and falling with each deep breath lying just in front of Takihime. It was just waiting to be snatched up and returned to its owner. A dull thump erupted over head of the sleeping cattle, pebbles pelted the sleeping goat and the lion that dripped sticky saliva roared above it. A challenge.

Takihime grinned with glee when she found a sleeping goat lying under a rock, not so far from her. This would be the easiest one to corral yet, and she approached it with a regular pace. Things were finally looking up.

The numerous groans of the goats behind her, however, made her stop. She, probably more so than a lot of other humans, had a certain animal instinct in her, which was surely much more prevalent in these goats. She turned around to look at them, then she heard it.

Booming footsteps, falling pebbles, approaching quickly. She turned around, the sounds getting closer, and closer. Finally, the beast stopped at the rocky overhand, the thunder cracking, almost as if to announce the presence of its arrival. On any other day, Takihime would've been mesmerized by it's majesty.

Today, however, was not any other day. She had a mission; a purpose to serve. She'd have to kill this beast. She turned to face the lion, gazing at it, her hands slowly to not cause alarm creeping behind her and wrapping an exploding tag around a kunai, shifting it into her right hand, and grabbing 3 shuriken with her left.

Finally, not waiting any longer, she threw the 3 shuriken directly at the lion, aimed almost at his feet to prevent him from leaping down towards the goat, as she charged forward, preparing to meet the beast head on in battle.

The beast had the animal instincts and trained senses to notice the flying shuriken almost immediately. Dodge? It wouldn't need to dodge, physically it vastly surpassed the girl and its claws were the only weapon it would need. The lion pounced over the flying projectiles, completely ignoring the startled goat and instead focusing on the dog-human. It landed with heavy paw steps just in front of the girl and gave no pause before lifting its enormous skull and using it as a club to slam the girl into the cliff side. The one-eyed creature was driven by true rage, the thought of eating the goats that were frozen with fear behind the girl had never even crossed its mind.

Her shuriken were futile against the giant beast. They bounced off of him like rubber, as he landed with force in front of her. The ground shook before her, and Takihime stood frozen, partially with fear, and part of her trying to take in all that was happening before her. The goats were silent, the only thing she heard was the rain pitter-pattering on the ground, and the movement of the lion.

As the creature raised it's head and rammed into her, she absorbed the brunt of the hit. Right at the moment of impact, she would aim to thrust her exploding-tagged kunai into his skull, hoping to lodge it deep enough to at least remain until the exploding tag went off.

Takihime was knocked back forcefully into the cliff, landing with a hard impact, the pain shooting through her back, as she slid down to the ground, cringing from the pain, waiting to see whether the beast would attack her unfazed by the blast, or whether her plan would succeed.

The lion bared its fangs victoriously as its prey careened into the rocky cliff side. Was it really going to be that easy to batter this puny creature into a pulp? Only upon reflection of his strike did the beast realize that there was an aching pain just under his jaw. Groaning, it stumbled backwards scratching at the wound and the great irritation it was causing. The beast roared a final time as a single missed paw step sent it falling down the cliff, normally it could easily react and cling to the cliff side or brace itself for landing and survive the fall, but the sizzling of an explosive tag would make that impossible.

The resounding explosion echoed through weather-struck forest and signaled the defeat of the mighty beast. The immediate threat had been vanquished, but now there were seven more goats to find and the storm was slowly beginning to recede.

Takihime felt the rush of victory when she heard the echo of the blast, and leaped with excitement from the ground, her pain suddenly having vanished. Victory was hers! She ran and hugged her 2 goat companions, relishing in victory. Technically, this was her first kill, again a lion no less! Her father would be so proud.

After a quick celebration, she walked over to the 3rd goat, that had been hiding under the rock, with the other 2 following closely behind her. SHe'd hope that the goat would regain it's pack mentality, and follow it's brethren. Together, they'd continue their trek up the mountain, Takihime hoping that the lone goat was simply a straggler who'd come from the higher ground in some sort of panic.

The third goat glanced at its savior and then down the mountain. 'Bah'-ing it turned its head towards the base of the mountain. The raging summer storm that had so suddenly appeared was beginning to fade away. The goat turned and nudged Takihime before sprinting towards the edge of the cliff. The other goats soon followed, and called to Takihime to come as well. Clearly, they had made a plan in with their goat words to help the person who had become their mutual hero.

She glanced, to see the third goat dart dart past her and away from her. That was the last thing she wanted to see. She'd worked so hard in herding up all these goats, she certainly didn't want to see any of them run away from her.

She was about to take off after it, when it seemed that the first 2 goats had beckoned for her to follow them. She ran in the same direction as the goats, keeping very close behind them.

[Mission] Natural Selection

Post by naeru » Sat Oct 13, 2012 11:24 am

The lead goat traveled down the mountain and scampered through the woods, invigorated with a mission of its own. After a few minutes, the goat stopped in front of a screen of greenery and pointed with its head through it, instantly its companions tackled through it and stumbled into a pasture of flowing grass. Seven goats raised their heads in confusion after witnessing this sudden arrival. "Bah?" All the goats had finally been found, and the mountain lion had been defeated.
