[Mission] On the Menu: Barbecued Goat

"Wouldja look at that." The large, dark-skinned man scratched the top of his head as he looked out on the scene. What was once a prosperous farm had been reduced to a fire-ravaged plain; it was hardly more than a black blotch on the earth, now marked solely by the depressing, charred shell of a house that wilted next to it. The only thing worse than the sight was the smell: while most of the goats had escaped from their imminent doom, some hadn't been so lucky and now their crispy, rotting corpses littered the farmland.

"Well, the rest is up to you, kiddo. I'm just here to make sure ya got here and get back, aight? The guy's gotta be in the house, so good luck getting into that mess." As... encouraging as that was, he meant well. Patting Omoi on the back, he shoved her forward and waved to her.

The house itself was exactly what he called it: a mess. Most of the ceiling had collapsed into the fire-eaten boards below, causing a handful of the wreckage to accumulate on the front porch, which left the front door inaccessible. There were two other entrances into the ruined property and neither were particularly difficult to find. The back door was locked but accessible, and the cellar doors were unlocked and perhaps the safest, though longest route into the house.

Looking upon the destruction that had been wrought here put Omoi into a state of urgency, and her mind promptly tuned out the man who had brought her here. The herder's requests had been going through for some time now, and the iyou-nin could only imagine exactly what kind of condition the patient was in after surviving this horrid fire. Doing her best to ignore the smell of burnt flesh, she made her way to the back entrance and checked the lock before trying to kick the door in. The chuunin was hoping that the door would cave in before too long and she'd be able to get to her patient that much quicker.

Weakened thanks to the blaze that had brought down the house, the door was easily kicked in, allowing Omoi to enter. The back room was in bad shape. Several beams had collapsed down from the roof, blocking the exit into the living area. Every surface was covered in ash that had settled, meaning there was a good chance the man had suffered severe smoke inhalation.

Besides the blocked entrance, there was a doorway to the left. It led downstairs to the cellar, and Omoi would have the choice of either searching it at the expense of time, or she could work on getting through the fallen debris blocking her way to the next room.

Considering the circumstances, Omoi had no time to waste; the cellar would have to wait until later. Using what physical strength she had, she started carefully moving pieces of debris, making sure not to cause a sudden cave in. During this time, she'd start calling out to the man, trying to get his attention and possibly keep him awake if he were fading in and out of conciousness. "Sir?! Sir, my name is Omoi; I've been sent by Iwagakure! Call out if you can hear me!"

Hopefully, the man was still alive.

There was no reply. The report said the man was delirious at the time the call went out, and chances were he was in worse shape now.

Once Omoi had given herself access into the next room, she'd see nothing more than a charred shell of what it once had been: a living area. The man was no where in sight, but there were several rooms joining this one. One led to a bathroom, the other would lead to a bedroom.

(OOC: Agh. Short post.)

After quickly brushing off her hands of the burned soot that was no doubt on the fallen beams, Omoi headed into the bedroom, searching for the patient. She was hoping that searching the bedroom wouldn't take too long; time was precious in cases like this.

[OoC: Sei, so help me, if you wait until the last day to post again I will have your goddang head.]

When Omoi searched the bedroom, she'd find an elderly man crumpled up next to his bed. His leg was trapped under a pile of broken wood that had come down from the ceiling, trapping him in place. He was lying down as though he were dead or sleeping, his arms pulled tightly to his chest. His face was blotchy with black ash, and aside from what could be inferred about his condition, any other wounds were not visible simply upon looking at him.

(OOC: >.< Sorry about that. I've had stuff I've had to to the past couple days IRL.)

Omoi spied the man trapped under the rubble and immediately set to moving the dead wood from atop him as expediently as she could without hurting him any more than he already was. Removing the debris that was pinning his leg, she knelt down beside him and, after making seals, flowed her chakra into his body, wanting to see the full extent of his injuries.

"Please, don't let me be too late," she whispered to herself worriedly as she tended to her patient.

By the looks of things, he was alive, but barely so. His breathing was shallow, as his lungs were damaged by smoke inhalation. The man was frail to begin with, and his most grievous injuries were his broken legs and his damaged respiratory system. Aside from these, he had sustained a number of small wounds. The wounds along his legs were infected, but given that his bones were broken, it would be hard to tend to them without causing pain.

"Help..." came his husky voice--he wasn't asleep or unconscious after all. No doubt it hurt to speak, but through his blurry vision, he could barely make out who was there and if they were indeed there to help him.

Omoi was relieved to see the man was still alive, but gently silenced him as she began to make seals. "Shh... Save your energy, sir. My name is Omoi, and I'm gonna help you through this. Do your best to relax, okay?" she asked as kindly as she could, trying not to let her persistent worry show.

After having finished the seals, Omoi placed her fingers around the patient's mouth, gently channeling and retracting fuuton chakra into his lungs to help him breathe. This would also serve to clean out his lungs of any contaminants that may have entered due to the fire and ash. Helping him breathe more easily would, in turn, make it easier for her to treat the rest of the damage to the respiratory system before she moved on to the legs.

After making a single seal, Omoi will gently place her hand over the victim's mouth and push a pocket of oxygen in and out of the patient's lungs using fuuton chakra, essentially performing CPR on the patient as their lungs filling up with air causes their diaphragm to expand and retract. Also, with a stronger burst of air, this jutsu can be used to extract small objects that have become lodged within the victim's esophagus by pulling it out with short bursts of fuuton chakra. This technique cannot assist any patient who would not be resuscitated through the execution of CPR. This technique lasts up to three posts.

The man set his head back down and let Omoi do her work. He slipped in and out of consciousness several times, but his health was already taking a turn for the better once his breathing problems were eased slightly. However, the man was still slowly dying and so Omoi would have to work diligently to address his wounds while still being thorough about the treatment.

For as important as it was that Omoi get to the man's legs, she had to make sure that his unseen injuries were taken care of first. Making a few seals, she placed her hands upon the man's torso and started channeling her healing chakra into the man's torso, targeting his lungs and other damaged organs and such. Hopefully, she'd be able to cure his internal wounds expediently so she could attend to his more obtouse wounds.

After ascertaining the damage to the patient's body with a technique like Eisei Shindan no Jutsu [Medical Diagnosis Technique], Omoi makes the needed seals and channels healing chakra from her hands and uses it to heal small wounds to internal organs. She can also use this technique to heal up to first degree burns by stimulating the growth of fresh skin cells, a function that can also be used to heal light cuts and scars. To heal superficial or small cuts on the skin and muscle takes only one post (1) of concentration. This jutsu is ineffective when treating anything more serious, and while it can heal burns, it does not repair any damage to the patient's nervous system.

Omoi was doing a lot of good already, although she still had a long way to go. With the restoration of the man's internal organs and wounds, his mortality rate slowly dropped and he was becoming stable. His ability to remain conscious increased, though he remained delirious and wasn't fully aware of what was going on.

Now the medical-nin would be looking at dealing with his damaged legs and the infected cuts along them. Most of the wounds were small, though two on his left thigh were long, jagged and grossly infected.

Omoi, having finished with the internal injuries, now turned to address the bigger issue: the old man's legs. She decided to take the next step one part at a time. Focusing on his left leg, Omoi channeled chakra into the old man's nerves after making the needed seals. She focused on the left leg, slowly cutting off the feeling to the limb.

The jutsu she was using would hopefully help with the rest of the treatment. No doubt resetting the multiple fractures in his two legs would be excruciating otherwise.

This field-oriented technique is used in place of typical anesthetics when they're not at hand. After forming the necessary handseals and focusing chakra into the hands, the user will place them over a group of muscles. As the chakra flows through the chosen area, numbness will begin to creep throughout it, beginning with the flesh before seeping into the muscle below. Small areas of numbness require one very little time, while medium-sized areas (equivalent to half a limb) require one (1) post to numb, and anything larger than an entire limb requires two (2) posts of concentration to numb. Once numbed, the effects last for four (4) posts before fading.

When the pain began to dull in one of his legs, the old man gathered his strength and looked up to see what was going on. Quite frankly, he hadn't expected to live through that night, which made Omoi's timely arrival something he would never forget.

His head slowly settled back against the ash-covered flooring, and he stared up with glassy eyes at the pieces of sky visible through the damaged ceiling.

Omoi had so far done everything right. She was slowly freeing the man from what seemed like an imminent death as she reversed his injuries one by one.

Having numbed the afflicted leg, it was time for the next step: stitching up all of the cuts on his leg. Making the needed handseals, Omoi began running her hands along the length of his leg, directing her chakra to heal and close as many of the cuts as she could. While she went about her work, Omoi tried getting the patient's attention. "Are you still with me, sir? Do you have a medicine cabinet somewhere in the house? I might be able to use whatever you have to supplement your treatment."

It was an odd question, yes, but Omoi was approaching the large infected cut on his inner thigh, and she wanted to be as careful as she could. Hopefully, the old man had non-damaged antiseptics lying around somewhere in a med-pack or something of the like.

There was no response from the man to begin, but slowly his eyes fluttered open and he groaned weakly. He had heard Omoi, but it was taking him a while to reply to her. His mind wasn't fully intact and he couldn't seem to keep his eyes open. After a few painstaking moments, his cracked lips parted and he spoke:

"T-The bathroom... medicine cabinet..." His voice was course and he weakly lifted an arm to point to the bedroom doorway. Across the way was a bathroom. Most of the items in it were either destroyed or damaged beyond use, but the inside of the medicine cabinet seemed to be in a little better shape. Many of the plastic pill bottles had melted, but a few at the back were still mostly in tact. One was a heart medication that seemed old and outdated and the other was a bottle of topical cream.

Omoi wasn't exactly sure how well the topical cream would work on disinfecting the man's wounds, but it was the only thing she had at the moment. Knowing she needed to act quickly, she returned to the man, checking to make sure the topical cream was, in fact, an antiseptic before carefully applying the cream to the wound before using the same jutsu she had on the rest of the cuts to heal the larger wound.

After making three seals, Omoi will place her fingertips on a wound and slowly drag them across the length of the wound, using her chakra to stimulate localized cellular regrowth and causing wounds and surgical incisions to close. Each cut or wound needs to be attended to seperately. To heal a few small cuts takes only one post (1) of concentration. To heal many small cuts takes two (2) posts of concentration, and multiple surgical incisions or moderate cuts would take three posts (3) of concentration. This technique works on muscle tissue, skin tissue, and arterial tissue, but is ineffective on organs and bone. Also, this technique is effective only on light to moderate cuts; deep gashes and stab wounds are too serious to be healed with this technique.

With most of the small cuts already dealt with, the large, infected cut could get the attention it needed. The topical cream, while it was an antiseptic, could only do so much in a short span of time. However, it was certainly better than nothing and the man's condition was already beginning to stabilize thanks to Omoi's efforts. He was still exhausted, but he was remaining conscious for longer periods of time. There was no doubt that he was going to walk--well, at least make it out of this alive and well on his way to recovery.

As Omoi dealt with his wounds, his legs would be all that remained of his injuries. If she didn't have the means to heal them, it wouldn't jeopardize the man's situation. The main problem she was going to have was getting him out after all was said and done.

For now, it was best to focus on what was at hand, and aside from the healing process, that was the man's questions:

"...My farm. Is it all gone?" he coughed, sadness welling up in his eyes. "The goats?"

[Mission] On the Menu: Barbecued Goat

Post by Yasashikaze Seiken » Sat May 28, 2011 7:07 am

Omoi, having finished with the first leg, began to treat the other leg. The old man's question had an odd sting to it; the kunoichi certainly wasn't one who enjoyed giving bad news. Yet, it was her duty. "I'd... be lying if I said the farm was in the best shape... but not all hope is lost. Though many of them are scattered, the majority of your goats are still alive... It will take some time, but you can rebuild," she admitted, trying to give as much encouragement as she could.

Meanwhile, Omoi began channeling chakra into the second leg, numbing the pain.
JutsuShow
*Mukankaku [Numbing]
C-Ranked Ninjutsu

A weak sigh passed the man's cracked lips, his eyes falling closed. He didn't seem surprised to hear that much of his farm had burned down in the same blaze that put him in this situation. This was his livelihood, and as nice as it was to hear Omoi's encouraging words, he could only hope to restore his home and business back to what it had been.

"Ah... this is my fault, you see. Forgetfulness on my part. I'm much past my prime... and I live here all alone," he confessed as Omoi treated his other leg. "P-perhaps it's time I retired."

Omoi shook her head; part of her training as a nurse had taught her to be empathetic towards her patients. "Don't give up, oji-sama. You can still rebuild, and the majority of your goats are still alive," she noted as she finished numbing his leg. "And if you're worried about living here alone, why not hire a few workers and give them room and board while they work on your farm? You'd increase your productivity and solve the issue of you living alone."

Having finished desensitizing the nerves in the man's leg, Omoi made another set of seals before running her fingers along the length of the various small cuts. When she reached the final major cut on this leg, she'd treat it as she had the other; taking some of the topical cream, she'd spread it along the length of the wound before healing up the cut.

Nuime no Jutsu [Suture Technique]
C-Rank Ninjutsu

"First I'd need to rebuild my home," he muttered, the loss of his property still stinging him quite hard. At least it was nearly the only thing stinging him now. With his cuts tended to and lungs feeling much better than he had, he certainly looked better, even if it was only a little. He still had dark bags under his bloodshot eyes, but that would soon be remedied when he was free from the charred barrens of his home.

"Ah--was it bad? My wounds? I-I couldn't see. They hurt badly before, but I couldn't lift my head. Will I be alright?" At a time like this, it felt good to be reassured, and that's all he seemed to be looking for.

Pleased that the wounds had been treated so effectively, Omoi gave a happy sigh, before offering her arm to the man to hoist him up to his feet. "Well, I was a tad bit worried at first, I will admit. However, I think that with a small trip to the hospital and a little rest, you'll be just fine... just like your farm will be," she responded, trying to be as reassuring as possible, ready to carry the man to the nearest medical facility.

Omoi reflected on how serious this man's condition had been when she had first arrived. She was simply glad that she had been able to reach him in time and prevent his untimely end.

Now that all that could be done was over with, Omoi only had to take the man and navigate her way out of the shambles of his home. It was nothing more than a little backtracking, as nothing had changed since the chuunin had entered the house. Once she made it out, reporting the situation to the young man that had escorted her was a good idea. He was the one to make the official report on the situation, and thus would gauge her success.

The kunoichi, not inexperienced with having to carry and move recently wounded patients, gave a quick apology before carefully scooping the man up into her arms and exiting the house, using the same route she had used to come back in. Before passing into each room, Omoi made sure to watch for any part of the house that had further degraded in its structural integrity, always ready to move at the sign of a cave in. Assuming all went well, she'd head straight for the scout that had led her here, ready to report on the mission.

There were no further issues getting out of the house. Once Omoi had the man and herself outside and joined with her escort, the hard work was over.

"Seems like all went well. I'm glad. Now let's get back to Iwa," he said. He seemed like he was in a bit of a rush, but he was too aware of the man's presence to mention that it was because the smell of burnt goats and charred wood and stained his nose by that time.

After the man had been taken to Iwagakure, he was given more medical treatment and made a full recovery. He would go on to rebuild his home and take Omoi's advice, hiring several hands to help him as he restored his business back to what it once was. Every so often, he'd send Omoi one of his products as a continuous thank you for saving his life.

[OoC: Congrats, you passed.]
