So we know nothing. Great.
With not nearly as many of his questions answered to his satisfaction as he'd have preferred, Shin's train of thought was already turning sour as the chuunin opened the door to reveal what was either a very deformed wolf or some exotic breed of ninken he hadn't heard of. Well, here was one apparent explanation for her promotion. Either way, the air in the room changed between the two as the animal's eyes met Shin's. He instinctively put a hand on the mace at his side. Logic would dictate that the dog was trained if she allowed it inside the building, but the manner it projected was one of authority, the spoiled air of an animal that's been given too much rein by its trainer. Wana's lip curled at the genin's continued stare, and received one in return; Shin wasn't in the habit of allowing himself to be cowed, and that went doubly so for anything less than human.
His attention was diverted, however, by a small voice in front of him.
Shin did what he could to mask a bemused look as the kid archer introduced himself, practically oozing the general incompetence of youth. Shin stuck out his hand to shake. It was times like this that he begrudgingly acknowledged the results of his strict upbringing. While he might have been no more skilled at this kid's age, he at least had the certainty that his father's training would produce results. The genin across from him obviously had no faith in his own abilities.
Smack.
The poor kid was nailed in the face by a bento box his cousin (presumably) made and saw fit to fling at her subordinate. While he didn't much care for her carefree demeanor, experience had taught him that freewheeling shinobi of any rank beyond genin were usually those who were competent enough to handle most routine missions. Hopefully she was capable of dropping the act when the situation called for it. Sensing that the incident had somehow demoralized his newest charge (the kid's reflexes apparently weren't great), Shin gave him a passing clap on the shoulder as he made for the door.
“If this is everything, let me just grab my pack.”
By 'pack', Shin was referring to the canvas cube in the corner that might have been mistaken for furniture by anyone not familiar with the surroundings. Granted, it was almost the size of Hoten, but only because a tent, a thick animal hide blanket/all-weather cloak, flint and tinder, cooking utensils, a few days worth of dried goods, rope, and some basic medical supplies took a little bit more space than a picnic lunch.
Settling the bundle on his back with his shield gracefully resting on top like the lopsided shell of a tortoise, Shin made for the door.
