Mentors Gotta Train Too

Post by Jinan B » Sat Mar 04, 2017 11:10 pm

"Faster... Faster! It doesn't matter how good your coverage is if you can't maintain enough speed with your movements... Hoshiko, think fast! Good, good. Take a lesson from Hoshiko, all of you. Not too slow, but still steady enough that adjustment can be made to take out an incoming projectile. You've all done well today for a first lesson. Keep at it before we meet again. Matsuko, you have the right pace behind your movements, but you're leaving your left side exposed for too long before you move back to it. Daichi, it doesn't matter how many times I need to say this, but your movements need to be faster; you and Satoru both. I expect each and every one of you to have mastered the technique before we meet again. Renjiro, your spear. Pay close attention, this is what I want all of you to be able to do by 3 days from now."

The redhead wasted little time in tossing her weapon over to the man teaching them, just as Ken wasted little time in beginning to twirl the spear around him. It was an elegant dance, he had to admit, as he moved the spear over his head; across his body; covering his left flank just before moving back to his right. It started slowly enough, so that the 8 students before him would be able to easily keep track of the movements, but soon enough the Kenitsuna found himself increasing the speed with which he moved, now with his feet as well as with his hands and arms. The spear became a blur as it went left, right, across, up; to the point where it was a certainty that none of the children assembled would be able to track the motions with their own untrained eyes. "Hikaru, Kaoru!" On the eldest man's command, the two slight students moved almost in unison, throwing a single kunai each at their teacher. The man didn't skip a beat, twisting the end of his spear upwards and moving the first kunai above his head. At the same time his feet moved to the left, and with another twist of his wrists the spear moved across from his hip and thrust the second projectile into the ground, where it remained quivering.

For most of the Bannin's life, his specialty had been only in techniques relating to the use of bladed weapons, be they daggers, short-swords, katana, or even great-swords. Recently, however, he had begun to see the promise of branching out and learning techniques from other styles for the sake of variability. He had set his eyes on a fighting style meant to break the bones of an opponent with well-placed punches, but when Erizawa, Matsuko had requested that Ken teach her the soujutsu style of the Holy City of Towers, he had decided that that would be what he would master first.

So it was that he found himself before 8 promising Academy students outside the walls of Iwagakure. Most days it would hardly have been necessary for them to meet at the location that the Bannin had chosen, an out of the way field just south of the village. Today, on the other hand, Ken had plans that would require a vast amount of empty land in order to act upon them. As much as he was training his students, before long he would need to train himself; and the space around him would bear the marks of such training for a while yet, he was sure. About 100 meters to the west, swords; spears; and other weapons of all descriptions lay against the side of a sudden incline, ready for use in case Ken needed any of them. Besides that land mark, however, the 9 shinobi were surrounded only by flat earth for hundreds of meters.

With the lesson over, the 8 students began to make their way back to the village guided by one of their regular academy instructors. Ken himself would make no such movement, instead kneeling down and lapsing into prayer while he waited for the man who he had invited to this training session to arrive. The Genkouyoushi were a punctual people after all.

Mentors Gotta Train Too

“Phew.” He had made his final few steps up to the top of the walls that surrounded Iwagakure. The walls weren’t so much walls, however, as Iwagakure was a valley; a vast plateau spread out for miles above the village. Because of the terrain, a stealth attack on the village was nearly impossible.

Ryuu looked up at the sun. It was directly above him; he was late. He wasn’t quite sure how long it would take him to get to Ken’ichi; he didn’t often train on this plateau, even though it did seem like a good place for it. As such, he couldn’t be exactly sure how late he was. The Banin had invited him to train, and Ryuu thought it was a good idea. While he hadn’t very much liked Ken when they first met, the Banin had grown on him. He was a more down-to-earth guy than Ryuu expected, and Ryuu had gotten used to his gross missing. He wouldn’t necessarily call them friends, but they could be in the future.

But first Ryuu would have to find him, and get there quickly. Ryuu had been thinking up an apology for his when he came up with an idea. A new jutsu he had been practicing could increase his speed; maybe he’d even get there on time! He immediately pumped out a few hand seals before focusing his chakra around his feet. Converting it to Fuuton, he slowly felt himself lifting ever so slightly off the ground.

Having successfully created the form of the “wind skating” jutsu, it was time to test if he had created the function as well. He began to shuffle his feet, picking up speed as he sped across the plateau. The jutsu seemed to be working rather well, as he was reaching speeds he couldn’t without its assistance. It was a bit difficult to control, however, and, as he was reaching max speed, he tripped over nothing, skidding across the ground.

He pulled himself to his feet, and checked his body for injuries. There didn’t seem to be any real injuries; just a few scrapes and bruises. It was his pride that was truly injured, as he turned to see the Banin, Kenitsuna, Ken’ichi standing just a phew meters away. The Banin was on his knees, praying, and Ryuu had hoped he hadn’t seen what had just happened. Ryuu made his way over to Ken’ichi.

“Ohayo, Kenitsuna,” Ryuu said with an embarrassed smile.

*Fuuton • Wind Skating
D-Ranked Fuuton Jutsu
After performing the needed hand seals, the user is able to glide on air as if they were skating on ice. This allows them to move faster (+3 speed) but lowers their accuracy and agility (-3 Taijutsu). This doesn't allow them to fly, but rather to travel over things like land, water, and ice with greater ease. The user is only held several inches off of the ground. This Jutsu does not expire until the user’s chakra supply runs out or the user shuts it off. The fuuton passive is not applied in this technique.

"Ohayo, Genkouyoushi. Having trouble with your dismount?" The Bannin couldn't resist passing the comment, the grin on his face no doubt only embarrassing Ryuu more than he had already been. The man had been taken from his prayers by the noise made by the Jounin just in time to see him land almost face first before him. The circumstances behind such a dynamic entry were unknown to the man, but of course they hardly mattered; Ryuu had arrived, which meant that it was time for the two to begin their own training.

"So... It's best that we begin then." The man said slowly as he rose to his feet. "You're certainly a proficient user of ninjutsu, Ryuu, that much cannot be denied; but to learn the arts behind Taijutsu takes an entirely different set of skills." He began, going straight into his explanation of his specialty without wasting so much as a single breath. He knew why it what it was that Ryuu had been hoping to take out of the session; a greater level of skill in Taijutsu, so what point was there behind wasting the precious seconds of the day? "Taijutsu is a varied art, such can be stated without any doubt. Just like a user of ninjutsu must decide to which of his arts that he dedicates his practice, and a genjutsu user must pick which senses it is that he will ensnare with his illusions, a taijutsu warrior must choose as well. With the correct focus, he could become a shadow; able to move without being heard and break through the most tight security without being seen. He could become a spear." Sliding his foot under the spear that he had left on the ground next to him, Ken kicked it up into his hand before moving directly into a thrust. "Breaking through any and all defences." He began to twirl the spear around his body, slowly walking towards the Cliffside where the rest of the weapons stood and clearly expecting the Paper Prince to follow him. "Or you can become a wall as unbreakable as our own great construction, able to weather the blows of the most hardened of opponents."

The speed of the spear began to increase slowly as he neared, with each subsequent rotation passing quicker than the last. "There are those that believe that Ninjutsu and Genjutsu are inherently "better" than Taijutsu. After all, the only options afforded to a user of taijutsu are throwing projectiles or Close Quarter combat techniques, right? Ninjutsu users can make their footsteps silent, or piece the most powerful defence. Genjutsu users can entrap their opponent within their very minds, making combat entirely unnecessary to begin with. What they say is true, partly. Even heavenly Taijutsu can't compete with the scale of Ninjutsu, and of course it cannot replicate the effects of Genjutsu, but why would it need to." As he finished, Ken shifted the movement of the spear, twisting it only around the front of his body as he increased its speed even more. A moment passed, and then 6 blades of wind seemed to blast out of the weapons, rushing to the Cliffside before connecting with it and cutting deeply. Ken slowly shifted back into his prior stance, moving the spear around his body more and more slowly before eventually planting it next to him with a grin on his face. The lower portion of the cliff, on the other hand, had been reduced almost entirely into nothing more than rubble. If Ryuu looked closely, he'd notice that light was visible again through the created holes.

It was a childish motion, sure, but Ken was more used to explaining the benefits of Taijutsu to Academy students and Genin, rather than hardened Jounin. Regardless, the entire situation brought a smile to the face of the Samurai's right hand, and so he turned back to Ryuu with a clear grin present. "So tell me, Genkouyoushi-san, how easily would you be able to do that with an A-Rank technique of your own?"

The man would move parallel to what remained of the cliff towards his stock of weapons, placing the spear back to where it had been previously before drawing two blades from the rack. The first was a simple Longsword, while the other a far shorter Sword-Breaker. "I'm sure that you did not come here just to hear of the use of Taijutsu, so let us begin in earnest. What exactly is it that you hope to learn here?"

Kushou・Low Wind Striking
A-Rank Taijutsu Manoeuvre
Prerequisite: Kushou・Low Wind Rising; 35 Speed
While within the Low Wind Rising Stance, the user will increase the speed with which they spin their spear or polearm in front of them to near superhuman levels. Once the user is ready, they will increase the speed of the spear or polearm even more, and the sheer force of its movement will create blade of wind equal to the length of the polearm that fly forwards at a speed and strength equal to 3/4 of the user's strength. The maximum amount of blades that can be created at any one is defined by the user's stamina/5. Blocking a projectile while performing the manoeuvre will throw off the user, however, making him unable to complete it; and they will also be unable to move will in the process of creating the wind blades.

Mentors Gotta Train Too

(OOC: Sorry for crappy post but I gotta get back in!)

Still a bit embarrassed about his flopping, Ryuu was mortified at the Banin's question. Despite his recent training, he was extremely deficient in taijutsu. The move that Ken'ichi had just performed was way out of Ryuu's league. He needed something more basic, ideally, something that wouldn't involve too much physical strength.

"Well," Ryuu began. "I was hoping you would be able to teach me some stealth movements. I admit my taijutsu combat skills are lousy, but if I can avoid confrontations of physical strength..." Ryuu didn't finish his sentence, not wanting to brag about himself. He let the Banin fill the rest of the words in. After his pause, he continued. "Any way you could show me some infiltration techniques?"
