[Graded][Plotboard] The Heist

Post by Kao » Sun Feb 18, 2018 10:52 am

The plan was going near perfectly. Kotaru had managed to convince his friend Mitsuo to accompany him on at cross country trip that landed them in the Khentii province of Rock Country, hundred of miles from their home village. Before that, he got his friend to deceive his family in a way, lies by omission. And before that, he had Mitsuo help him steal from a restricted section in one of Iwagakure's libraries. He was turning Mitsuo into quite the delinquent, all for a strange stone with stranger powers.

"Let's start there," he said as he pointed to an opening in the cavern's wall directly across from them on the other side of the murky pool. There was no telling how many different paths they would have to explore and they didn't have time to waste. They had less than a week to find what Kotaru wanted and get back to the caravan, and they had no way of telling how much time passed while they were in the cave system. Kotaru lit the tips of his fingers with his Match Stick jutsu and headed towards the tunnel he pointed out, and when he reached the edge of the murky water he quickly focused chakra to the bottom of his feet so he could walk across.

If Kotaru knew how things worked in creepy, spirit-infested caves he would have never uttered the words, "So far so good." He had only taken a few steps on top of the water and as soon as the words left his mouth, his feet started to sink beneath the surface. He looked down, confused since he was still using his chakra correctly for the technique. "What t-" He suddenly fell into the water as he felt his chakra falter and then become completely disrupted. It immediately became apparent that this was not a normal pool of cave water. Despite the unnatural warmth of the air, the water was barely above freezing and the shock of the temperature caused him to gasp, which of course meant the water rushed straight to his lungs. Not only that, but even though he was only a couple feet from shore the water was deceptively deep. Once his head was beneath the pool's surface, the poor Akari started to sink straight to the bottom.

With a nod of agreement, Mitsuo followed Kotaru and his glowing fingers as they moved towards an opening in the cave wall that appeared to be a pathway of sorts. The sheer darkness of the cave coupled with Kotaru's earlier revelation that the rest of the cave was essentially a maze, Mitsuo could feel himself honestly begin to worry about the logistics of this mission. With very little light to guide their way, entering an area deep within a mountain that was described as 'a maze' probably wasn't their best idea. What if they got lost? They had no map, no way of tracking which way they had gone, and there was no chance that someone would miraculously find and save them if they never returned.

Mitsuo had been deep in these thoughts when he and Kota came up upon what appeared to be an underground lake of sorts. As shinobi often do, Mitsuo watched as Kota took a few steps onto the surface of the water, channeling chakra into his feet, and was prepared to do the same when the genin suddenly yelped and plunged into the water, dousing the flames on his hands.

"Kota!" Mitsuo called out into the darkness. He could hear the boy's gasps for air and thrashing in the water, but in the pitch black of the cave he couldn't actually see it. It would be suicide to just dive in, Mitsuo thought to himself, feeling a small twinge of guilt for thinking of his own safety while his friend was thrashing about in the water. He knew he needed to do something but he didn't exactly know what. When Kota's thrashing about suddenly went still, Mitsuo quickly performed a set of handseals and slammed his fist into the ground on the shore. Spawning three large chained blades, Mitsuo directed them towards the lake in the area where he had heard Kota's splashing, hoping that he wasn't too late. Come on come on come on, he thought to himself as heard the blades plunge into the water. Moment's later, he heard the sound of one of the chains go taut and immediately grabbed hold of the line. Putting all of his muscles into work, Mitsuo heaved back on the chain, pulling it and whatever it had wrapped around out of the water, at a slower rate than he liked, until whatever he had caught slid up onto the shore.

"Kota?!" He called out as he fell to his knees and started feeling around. Following the chain, he soon found himself placing his hands on what felt to be Kota's shoulder, cool to the touch. Frantically, he moved his hands up the shoulder until he reached the boy's neck and began feeling for a pulse. Thump...thump he felt, just as the boy started to groan.

"Oh thank god." Mitsuo uttered to himself as he sat back. As he began to let himself calm down, however, he heard another one of the chains go taut. Odd, he thought to himself as he got up. Grabbing hold of the taut chain, Mitsuo once again began to pull, but whatever this chain had caught was much heavier than some genin Akari. Oddly enough, as he stopped pulling the chain seemed to start rising, as if whatever the chain had wrapped around was beginning to surface. "Well this can't be good." He mumbled to himself as he backed away.

Looking at the water of the lake, a sudden glow beneath the water's surface was beginning to get larger and larger before a form of considerable size suddenly burst up from the surface. Turning away from the initial splash of water, Mitsuo turned back towards the lake to find what appeared to be a large eel like creature had emerged from the lake, glowing from what appeared to be crackling electricity bright enough to illuminate several meters around it. And there, between it's lips, was the chain that had emerged from Mitsuo's jutsu. His chain hadn't wrapped around anything; this thing had tried to eat it. Mitsuo had unintentionally cut a fish. Or, well, eel. A very, very, large eel.

Well shit, Mitsuo thought to himself as he stared up at the beast. As it opened its jaws and let out a roar, a roar that he didn't think an eel should be capable of making, Mitsuo dispelled his jutsu, releasing Kota and the eel from the chains, as he grabbed onto the genin and started pulling him back the way that they had come.

"We need to move!" He announced with a sense of urgency. He wasn't sure if they would be able to fight the thing, but they needed to put some distance between them and it.

What a stupid way to die.

For a terrifying moment Kotaru thought he was dying. His lungs were screaming at him from both the lack of oxygen and the water that had filled them instead. His mouth and nose burned and his chest ached, and though his arms and legs frantically flailed to try to get himself back to the surface, he continued to sink to the bottom of the seemingly endless pool. Something wasn't right. He should be moving closer to the surface. But Kotaru's mind was blanking as he began to lose consciousness, though he tried to fight it. His flailing slowed and his eyes flickered closed.

Luckily he wasn't alone and Mitsuo fished him out. He didn't immediately respond when his body hit the shore, though after a few seconds he lurched and spit water out of his lungs and mouth. Groaning and coughing, he turned over and barely registered that something was going on. "Wh...what? I-" Kotaru heaved again as a mighty roar filled the cave. Their part of the cavern was suddenly lit up and Mitsuo was suddenly dragging him, but the boy was disoriented didn't understand what was going on. But when the giant eel let out another roar, he looked toward he was able to snap out of it.

"Shit shit shit!" He jumped back just in time to avoid a wild bolt of lighting hitting the ground right where he was standing. He wobbled on the landing and coughed up the last of the water lingering water. "Watch out!" The eel opened its jaws impossibly wide and lunged toward them with teeth as long and sharp as swords. Kotaru barely managed to dodge, and when the eel reeled back the genin took the opportunity to manifest his melashiin.

"We gotta get around this thing!" That much was painfully obvious. Going across the pool was out of the question, and going around it would be difficult since the pool was large enough to hide the thing. Their best bet was to try to stay out of the thing's reach and go around and dart down the tunnel. "Come on!" Kotaru backed up as far as he could and started to take the long way around, and the eel screamed loud enough to make the cavern shake.

They weren't going to be able to out run this thing. Even if they were to stay out of it's lunging range, it still had the ability to fire lightning bolts, and that was only what it had shown. It was very likely that this thing was either a spirit of some sort or a natural creature influenced by spirit energy. Either way, it was dangerous and it wanted them dead. The only way that they were going to be able to increase their survival chances was if they split its attention.

"You go right, I'll go left!" Mitsuo called out to Kota, not really giving the genin any time to argue as he started dashing down the leftmost path around the lake. If they split up, he hoped, it would force the eel to either alternate which one of them it attacked or it would only focus on one of them, giving the other one an opening to attack. Looking over his shoulder to see if his plan was working, he realized that it was: Just not how he wanted it to. While he had hoped that the eel would choose to follow and attack him, seeing as how he was the one that had speared it in the mouth with a chain blade, the creature seemed deadset on attacking Kota as it launched yet another lightning bolt at him, narrowly missing.

"Hey!" Mitsuo called out as he slid to a stop. Forming handseals, Mitsuo held out his hand as a large sphere of molten lava suddenly materialized in it. Taking aim, Mitsuo threw it with all of his might at the creature, launching the sphere in a wide arc across the lake, landing square on the back out the giant eel. Letting out a high pitched wail, the creature thrashed about as the lava seared into its flesh before diving down into the water. Mitsuo watched a faint glow beneath the water's surface began to dart towards his direction, indicating that the creature was now focused on him. Just has he started running towards the other side of the lake once more, the creature emerged from the lake and letting out a bellowing roar.

"DIIIIIEEE" It hissed, something that Mitsuo hadn't expected. It was a spirit. Mitsuo barely had time to process this fact as the creature dove towards his direction with its teeth barred. Leaping up into the air to avoid the creatures bite, Mitsuo landed on the cavern wall and continued running, but was unprepared for the electronic discharge released by the creature, sending a wave for pure electricity through the area and striking Mitsuo in the back, sending him tumbling to the ground as he let out a scream from the sudden shock. Get up! He thought to himself urgently, knowing full well that the creature was going to take full advantage of the situation. Looking up, he was just in time to see another lightning bolt coming his way, narrowly dodging it by diving to the side.

Keep going Kota, he thought to himself as he dodge another lightning bolt, Just keep going.

Kotaru didn't need to be told twice. As soon as the command left Mitsuo's mouth the Akari darted to the right. All he thought about was getting away from the thing and into the tunnel unharmed, but the eel had other plans. The thing didn't hesitate to turn its attention to Kotaru, and the genin cursed colorfully as he only just barely missed being hit by a lightning attack. When Mitsuo attacked the beast with a ball of lava - 'Smart! - it disappeared back into the water. When it did, Kotaru booked it and ran towards the tunnel as fast as he could.

"DIEEEEEE!!!!" Like Mitsuo, Kotaru didn't have the opportunity to process the fact that the creature was indeed a spirit. He looked back to check on his friend, just in time to see a bolt of lightning strike his friend in the back.

"Mits, NOOO!" A wave of fury rolled through the genin's entire body and his melashiin slammed onto the ground, propelling him forward. He drew two kunai and made his way to the spirit eel, sometimes running on his feet, other times 'running' on his shiin. Seeing his friend, his first real friend, on the ground and injured made the boy practically see red, and he was determined to get the eel away from him and maim it in the process.

The lightning was exploding from random parts of its body, so there was no one, obvious place for Kotaru to attack. Knowing that, Kotaru leaped into the air towards the preoccupied eel and landed on its back. It was slick and slimy, so he instinctively drew chakra to the bottom of his feet and ran up its back towards its head. With a mighty yell, he jammed the kunai in the top of the creature's head and hoped that he'd injure it.

But the eel's hide was tough and the kunai were only slightly more effective than a bee sting. The eel stretched further out off the water and, with a horrible hiss, slung its body with so much strength that Kotaru went flying off and slammed painfully into the cavern wall. Luckily - if one could consider being thrown like a rag doll lucky - it threw Kotaru in the direction of the tunnel. But Kotaru didn't realize it right away; with the wind knocked out of him he struggled to get back to his feet and searched left and right for his friend, who he hoped had used the distraction to get away.

Mitsuo had been so focused on dodging that he hadn't noticed his teammate charge the creature instead of running like Mitsuo had hoped. Dammit Kota, Mitsuo thought to himself as he watched Kota run along the creatures body, Why didn't you run?.

There was no way that they were going to defeat this thing. It's hide was thick, it's power immense, the only thing that was really saving them was that it was bound to the water and it's aim was fairly awful. Realistically, though, they didn't have to beat it. They just had to escape it. All they needed was a small window of opportunity to make for the tunnel beyond the lake and they would be safe from the creature. Sure, they would have to deal with it again if they ended up coming back this direction, but at least then they would be better prepared to deal with it.

As much as he didn't want to admit it, Kota's intervention had given him time to plan in addition to likely saving his life. As the creature threw Kota from its back, Mitsuo drew two kunai from his pouch, each with an exploding tag attached, and threw them at the ceiling above the creature. Detonating the tags, Mitsuo immediately began charging at the creature, performing handseals in the process, as parts of the ceiling began to fall on the eel, causing it to screech. While the eel tried to avoid the falling rocks, Mitsuo's leapt towards it as his fists became coated in steel. As he neared the creature, distracted by the falling rocks, Mitsuo swung his fist with all his might, connecting with the eels jaw and sending it reeling backwards as Mitsuo continued his trajectory towards Kota and the entrance to the tunnel. Landing with a roll and a slide, Mitsuo spun in time to watch the creature crash into the water, hitting its head on the embankment before submerging.

Not one to waste time, Mitsuo looked at his winded friend and grabbed him by the arm, lifting him to his feet and towards the tunnel. "Let's go!" He called out as he pulled Kota along. He continued running until they were well into the tunnel before coming to a stop and leaning his back up against the tunnel wall, heaving as his lungs tried to catch his breath.

"Is THAT what you call an intimidating yet weak spirit?" Mitsuo asked with labored breaths, "That thing was huge and it probably would have killed us if we had continued trying to fight it. I mean, seriously Kota. I'm starting to think that the information in that book you read might be a little outdated." He continued. He had accepted that they would likely have to fight spirits of some sort once they had entered the area, but...that one was no slouch. It easily could have killed them if they had gotten too close. If Kota's book considered that to be a weak spirit, Mitsuo feared what they were going to have to face when they found the spirit guarding this stone.

"Doesn't matter, I guess. Let's just keep moving." He said, pushing off the wall and beginning to walk further down the tunnel into the darkness. "Thank you, by the way." He added, the reason for his thanks likely apparent.

Kotaru watched through lidded eyes as Mitsuo took on the spirit. It was impressive to see the Enkouten in action, first throwing kunai tied to exploding tags to distract the creature then using a jutsu backed by his apparently huge strength to knock the eel into the water. It was a lot more effective than his attack; then again, Kotaru's main goal was to get it away from Mitsuo so that it wouldn't hurt him anymore. If he looked at it this way then he succeeded. But Kotaru wasn't much of a 'bright side' kind of kid.

Mitsuo pulled him down the tunnel and they both ran far, far away from the chamber, only stopping when the sound of the crashing rocks and hissing eel were long gone. Kotaru sunk to the ground, completely out of breath after being knocked into the wall and almost immediately having to run to safety. "Well, yeah considering it didn't kill us on sight," he responded to Mitsuo's complaint. "We handled it pretty well, I think. We're not here to to have prolonged battles with the things. We get in, find the stone, and get out. Simple." Of course, it wasn't simple, and deep down Kotaru knew that. The encounter with the spirit made him painfully aware of his weaknesses, and for a few moments he considered all the ways he needed to train when they returned to the village. But he couldn't let himself get hung up on that, seeing as it wasn't the time to brood over his insufficiencies. "The book's information is sound. It warned us of intimidating spirits and that's what we got."

Kotaru did his best to stay calm, but the fight and the pain he still felt from being thrown had him a bit on edge. "You're welcome," the genin added after a long pause. "Thanks to you, too. Your jutsu was way more effective than what I did." The kid dusted himself off and stood up, then he ignited the tips of his fingers once again. The tunnel was long and pretty wide, so if anything else came after them they would have enough room to maneuver. "Remind me to learn some more offensive jutsu. Maybe lift some weights, see if I can learn another affinity. That way, next time it'll go a lot smoother."

This trip might have been more dangerous than he anticipated. Kotaru didn't want either of them to get hurt. It would be his fault, and if they got seriously injured then it was over for them. No one knew where they were and no one could help them; they were on their own, which meant they had to be smarter. He had been too eager and careless in blindly walking through the cavern. From that point on, he had to look at every shadow and every obstacle as a possible threat. He was a bit nervous now, but he would have to hide it. Otherwise, he was sure that Mitsuo would demand that they turn around, and Kotaru had come too far to give up. "I'll...be more careful," he promised, though he wasn't sure how. "Your family won't be too thrilled with me if something happens to you. It'd be all my fault."

With a sigh he turned down the tunnel and said, "Guess we should keep going." So they walked. And walked. The tunnel never seemed to end. But eventually it did, opening into another chamber. This one was much like the first except it lacked the huge pool in the center. It was dry and seemingly completely empty.

Mitsuo merely grunted in agreement, both to the statement regarding is family and the fact that they should continue moving. They spent a long while silently walking through the deep darkness of the tunnel, only the sounds of their footfalls alerting them to where each other was. He didn't know how long they had been walking, but there came a point where Mitsuo wondered whether or not they were going to ever reach another room or if this tunnel was simply a false path designed to bury prisoners in its length. They could barely see their own hands, an unknown source of minuscule seemingly allowing their eyes to adjust slightly to the darkness, and so Mitsuo kept close to the cavern wall so as to keep direction. Luckily, after seemed what hours, he felt the wall suddenly begin to bow out and expand outward at a sharp angle, suggesting that they had entered some sort of room.

The oddity about this room? They could actually see. Not well, but there was more light in this cavern than there had been in the tunnel. At first, that fact hadn't occurred to Mitsuo, but once he realized it he began looking for the source of the light. There were no lamps, no open flames, nothing obvious that seemed to give off light yet the room had a faint glow that allowed the boys to see the depth of the cavern that they had entered and the several paths that branched off from it. He found himself perplexed; what was giving light to the room? What was allowing them to see along the walls of this cavern? Then he realized.

"It's the walls." He mumbled, at first to himself, "The walls are...glowing." He said a bit louder so that Kota could hear him. Indeed, the walls were glowing, giving off a faint red hue that was allowing them to see. All along the room, on every side, the walls glowed, brighter in some spots than others. "That's...odd." He added, openly staring. Moving his thoughts away from the walls, Mitsuo looked at the three options of tunnels that they were given. If this place was a maze, there was likely only one path that would be the correct one. There had to be some kind of clue, something that they had learned that would help them figure out which path to take.

"Why don't we try that one?" Mitsuo asked, pointing at the tunnel in the rear-right corner, "It's probably a stretch, but the wall seems to be glowing brighter over near that door. If we assume that the walls are glowing due to the spirit or that stone, maybe the walls will start glowing brighter the closer that we get?"

Finally, the tunnel opened up into another chamber. They'd been walking for hours it seemed, and Kotaru thought that maybe they needed a break. They didn't rest after the encounter with the eel, and he hoped that there was nothing like that in this cavern. "We must be getting close," the boy said, referring to the glowing walls. A quick look around the chamber revealed that it was empty, but he knew that probably wasn't the case.

"Sure, we can try that one. But first we need to eat something. I have a feeling that anything we encounter from now on won't be as much of a pushover as Eel-kun back there." The pair paused to eat and regain their strength, and even after they were done, Kotaru insisted that they use the opportunity to rest. They still had several days to explore, and he didn't want to push themselves too far too quickly.

After they rested for an hour or so, Kotaru stood and dusted himself off. He again led the way down the tunnel Mitsuo chose. It also had glowing red rocks lining the walls, which made it easier to see and they moved faster as a result. But after they walked through the winding tunnel for roughly twenty minutes, the floor of the tunnel in front of them suddenly dropped into a deep, pitch black hole that prevented them from moving forward. Though the glowing rocks on the walls indicated that there was more to the tunnel, the glow disappeared after a sharp turn in the tunnel, and there was no sign that there was an other side to the trench. They could probably walk on the walls to see if the ground returned, but now Kotaru knew better than to recklessly push forward.

He sighed, "Let's turn around," and they made their way back to the chamber. When they returned, he pointed at the glowing rocks around them. "Are you sure those rocks were brighter before? Because now," he pointed to a tunnel toward their left, "now those look brighter to me."

"So much for my theory..." Mitsuo mumbled as he stared at the deep dark abyss. He half considered continuing on despite the pit, purely out of pride, but decided against it for fear of what may be beyond that sharp turn. That and with their luck the walls would be coated in the same chakra like substance that had prevented them from walking on the water in the lake for too long and they would drop into the eternal abyss never to be heard from again. When he considered that option, turning around didn't sound like such a bad idea.

"Of course I'm sure." He replied to Kota's question as they entered the original cavern, "This tunnel was clearly brighter than the others. See?" He said, turning back towards the tunnel that they had just walked down only to find that the light emanating from the stones was significantly dimmer than it had been before. Puzzeled by this development, Mitsuo turned back towards the tunnel that Kota was now indicating, looking at it with squinting, inquisitive eyes. "Huh...Alright, well, maybe I need to get my eyes checked." Mitsuo said finally, "Shall we try that one?"

"Your eyes are probably fine," the younger shinobi replied as walked toward the brightly glowing rocks. As he approached he paused and looked at them curiously. The closer he got to them, the dimmer they became. Kotaru hummed in contemplation and backed up again while looking over to the third tunnel but nothing seemed to have changed. He then looked back to the first tunnel, and right before his eyes the rocks near it began to brighten. He got a sudden hunch and motioned for Mitsuo to follow him down the first tunnel again, saying, "I wanna test something." The genin led Mitsuo down the tunnel for a few minutes and then they turned around to go back into the cavern. Just as he expected, the second tunnel - the same one that Kotaru had pointed out earlier as suddenly being brighter - was once again glowing with more intensity. Just to be sure, he led Mitsuo down that tunnel and again turned around, and once again the first tunnel was the one going brighter.

"Interesting," he droned, "Those two tunnels alternate between being the brightest path. I think that's meant to throw off any intruders. Lead them down the brightly lit tunnels and then send them tumbling down a pit. I'm willing to bet that the other bright tunnel has some kind of hazard in it that's meant to quietly kill."

Kotaru then pointed toward the third tunnel, the one that hadn't shown any difference in the intensity of the glowing rocks. "I think our best bet is that one." He looked to Mitsuo for some kind of positive feedback before he led him down the third tunnel and hopefully towards their goal.

"That's really odd." Mitsuo said as he and Kota came out of the tunnel for a second time. Just as the genin had said, while the lights of the tunnel they were in had been the brightest before they had entered it, the rocks of the tunnel directly across from them were now glowing more intensely. "I suppose you could be right." He admitted, "Making it seem like one tunnel was glowing more intensely than the others could have been a trap set to lure explorers to their doom. Certainly misled us." He said, "Well, fooled me. Then again, we can't really be sure that the one that isn't glowing is any less dangerous or will have a more fortuitous outcome." He added. In reality, they didn't even know if they had been going the right way from the start. They had just randomly chosen a pathway at the beginning of the cave and made their way to the point that they were at now. For all they knew, they were going the complete opposite way that they were supposed to and any of these three paths would just lead them to death. No point in thinking like that I guess he thought to himself.

"I suppose we might as well try it." He finally lamented, "Who knows where it will take us, but we might as well find out."

Kotaru sighed as he looked down the path they had chosen. He wanted to be ready to venture down the tunnel and take on whatever they found, but mentally and physically he was exhausted. It had been hours since they first found the caves, and based on how heavy his eyelids were becoming he could only guess that it was in the middle of the night. "We can find out later," Kotaru mumbled as he swung his bag off of his shoulders. He pulled out a tightly rolled up sleeping bag and spread it on the ground. The ground was just as warm as the cavern itself, which would make it slightly more comfortable for the two to sleep on the ground.

"We still have some days to explore. No sense in trying to run through every tunnel in one go." The genin pushed aside a few rocks so that their sleeping area would be smoother; neither of them would want to sleep on top of pointy, uncomfortable rocks. "Nothing's tried to kill us in here, so here's as good a place as any to try to get some rest." Kota was an extremely light sleeper, so he figured if anything tried to sneak up on them he would be the first to know about it. "Let's try to sleep for now."

Mitsuo hadn't realized just how exhausted he was until Kota suggested that they rest. Having been running on seemingly pure adrenaline since the fight with the giant eel, Mitsuo's body had been pushing him further along despite having expended so much energy. All at once, his body was suddenly sore and his tired, as if considering his physical condition had suddenly revealed all of his aches and pains. His back still ached from there the creatures electrical discharge had struck him while his legs burned from the constant walking that they had been doing for the last who knows how many hours. "Maybe you're right." He said in agreement, moving towards one of the walls and sitting up against it.

Taking his pack off of his shoulder, Mitsuo began rummaging around in it, looking for his canteen and a few rations, realizing that he suddenly had a deep hunger due to not having eaten since they entered the caves. Pulling the canteen and a few strips of jerky from the bag, Mitsuo consumed as much as he felt comfortable with before putting the canteen away and removing a rolled up blanket. As much as he wanted to drink more of the water, he only had a limited supply and who knew when they would find fresh water. Clearly they couldn't go back to the lake; not with that eel floating around. Taking the blanket, Mitsuo tossed it in the air while holding one end, causing it to flare out before gently falling to the ground. He figured that while they wouldn't need it for the warmth, it would still be slightly more comfortable to sleep on top of the blanket than the ground. "I guess we can rest a bit." He said as he laid down. He hadn't actually intended to fall asleep, planning to let Kota sleep while he kept watch, but soon enough he passed out.

The two slept for hours. Though they couldn't tell exactly for how long, when they finally awoke they had gotten a full night's sleep. Kotaru woke up a bit before his friend and quietly stretched to wake up his muscles. He wasn't in any hurry to wake up Mitsuo; after the run in with the eel, he needed as much sleep as he could get. When Mitsuo finally woke up, Kotaru was staring into the vastness of the cavern.

"Morning," he drawled as he chewed on some jerky from his bag. "Or whatever time of day it is." He rolled up his thin sleeping bag and stuffed it into his bag. The cavern was still just as silent as it had been before they went to sleep, which was a good sign. Not only that, but the glowing rocks still looked the same as before, which bolstered Kotaru's resolve to go down the dimly lit tunnel that they had chosen earlier. "Let's get going then."

The two would travel through the tunnel for roughly an hour; it winded through the mountains, plunging them deeper into the earth. Every once in a while they would come across a fork in the tunnel, but the glowing rocks never failed them. They always followed the dimmer path, and they didn't meet any dangerous obstacles. Finally, after walking and walking, the tunnels opened into another cavern.

This one was different than the others, and the boys would be able to tell immediately. The cavern was enormous with no ceiling in sight; instead, what appeared to be red clouds concealed just how high the ceiling was above them. The cave was filled with a red mist that seemed to circulate and swirl within the cavern. Not only that, but it was hot, almost as stifling as a forge."This might be it," Kotaru murmured as he looked around from the cavern's entrance, now completely on guard. "Stay alert."

Mitsuo awoke from with a bit of a start, momentarily forgetting where he was. After a brief moment, he remembered: He was underground with Kota hunting for some treasured orb while being attacked by monsters. If he wasn't so sure that he was awake, he would swear that he was in a nightmare. "Morning.." He mumbled as he rubbed the rest of his tiredness from his eyes. He took a few moments to pull out his rations once again to have a small bite to eat and then began rolling up the blanket that he had put down. "Alright, lets go." He said, stuffing the blanket in his pack and slinging it over his shoulder.

Mitsuo let Kota take the lead as the traveled through the tunnels, figuring that the boy had a good idea of which direction they should take despite the pattern being seemingly obvious now. Each time that they followed the dimmer tunnel, they were met with a seemingly peaceful walk, to the point that it was kind of getting boring. They had run out of unique topics hours ago and now walked in mostly silence. It wasn't until they had entered the new cavern that Mitsuo really started to take an interest in their path. "I don't think smoke is supposed to be red..." He mumbled back as he looked straight up, "If that giant eel was just the appetizer, I can't wait to see the main course." He added a bit sarcastically. He wasn't sure what it was, but there was a feeling in the air that told him that they were in for quite the fight.

Kotaru took a hesitant step forward. The red haze wasn't very thick, but there was enough of it that they couldn't clearly see more than about twenty feet in front of them. "I'm guessing you don't have a jutsu that can get rid of this red shit, huh?" He kept his hand hovering over his kunai pouch, hoping he wouldn't have to use any, and then he left the relative safety of the tunnel and stepped fully into the cavern. Once the two shinobi stepped out of the tunnel, some of the swirling red haze directly in front of them stopped and sped towards the tunnel's entrance. It filled the entrance and became opaque, almost blood red in color.

"Well, that can't be good." The genin swiftly picked up a pebble and tossed it toward the entrance, and just as he dreaded, it bounced off. The haze had formed some kind of barrier and now the only known exit was blocked. There was no telling whether or not a well placed punch would shatter it, but there would be time to figure that out later. "This definitely must be the place." With that, Kotaru manifested his melashiin and the tendrils waved lazily behind him. "Stay close."

Through the haze they could see that the cavern was nothing like they had ever seen. There were rock formations all around them that formed columns almost a fifty feet high, a cliff at the back of the cave that fell into a dark pit, and a few stalactites scattered throughout that were larger than some buildings. In front of them and to the right were enormous flat stones that raised up almost like stairs, though what they led to was hidden behind the strange red clouds. Kotaru pointed towards it, knowing Mitsuo wouldn't like what he was going to suggest. "I think we gotta climb that."

Mitsuo removed a kunai from his back pouch and brought his guard up as the red mist began to ominously swirl and thicken around the entrance to the tunnel. It was a never a good thing when something like that happened, especially when there was a good chance that it meant that they were going to get attacked by something. It made Mitsuo kinda laugh, then that he had simply pulled out a kunai to defend himself with; if whatever was about to attack them was anything like the giant eel that they had faced earlier, his little kunai was going to do nothing to it.

"I get the feeling that climbing up those things is going to lead us right into a trap for some creature," Mitsuo said dryly, "Of course, I suppose that's what you want considering that wherever there's an angry spirit, there might be this object that you are looking for." He added, looking over at Kota. "Guess we might as well get going." He sighed. Approaching the 'step', Mitsuo flowed chakra into this feet and stuck his foot out onto one's surface. Unlike the water in the lake earlier, it seemed that he was able to use his wall walking technique to walk up the side of the step which would make climbing up however many there were much easier. "So far so good..." He mumbled. He couldn't wait to meet whatever creature awaited them at the top.

They didn't get far. The duo made it a few dozen feet off the ground before the first sign of trouble came. As they climbed they approached the clouds - which, upon closer inspection, were noticeably darker and denser than the fine red mist below - and the air around them became significantly warmer. Kotaru's skin felt hot an uncomfortable and eventually began to sting and turn pink. He pointed this out to Mitsuo but as soon as he started talking a hum sounded around them and the vibrations were so powerful that it rocked their chests. Kotaru looked around, alarmed, and as he reached to his kunai pouch something huge emerged from the cloud and slammed the genin into the steps.

The object - the thing - could only be described as a giant insect leg. It was huge, at least twice Mitsuo's size in both length and girth, and it curved around Kotaru and pinned him to the rocks. Kotaru coughed and struggled against the appendage but paled when he saw what was coming behind it. A pair giant, glowing purple eyes peered down at them from behind the maroon clouds, and a second later the clouds dispersed to reveal the grotesque spirit that had them cornered.

Despicable humanssss.

The spirit slithered slithered down from above, its body twisted around a gigantic stalactite. The spirit took the form of a giant centipede, red and purple in color, with black antennae protruding from its triangle shaped head. The antennae wiggled around in Mitsuo's direction; though its attention seemed to be mostly on Kotaru, it was certainly aware that Mitsuo was there. There was a thick red mist coming from its mandibles, which explained where the red haze and clouds came from.

It's been years since a human has made it this far into my nest, the spirit said, and whenever it "spoke" the entire cavern seemed to vibrate. Kotaru continued to struggle against the spirit's leg. The end of it covered his entire chest and blood trickled out of a gash on his shoulder. The leg was no longer attached to the spirit's body; it had come detached after it pinned the genin down.

The two of you...will make a decccent snack.

"Kota!" Mitsuo screamed as he watched his friend and teammate impaled on the rock face above him. He whipped his head back in the opposite direction, looking for the source of the attack only to find a ginormous creature 'standing' before them. Mitsuo stared, mouth agape, as he marveled at the creature's size. It was intimidating to be standing before such a creature, it's single attack on Kota proving that it was not only large, but also strong. How could we ever hope to beat this thing? Mitsuo asked himself. He knew that he had to save his friend, but there was nothing in his arsenal that was going to be able to take down this giant centipede-like monster. Or rather, this centipede-like spirit. Who knew what other capabilities besides its size and strength it had at its disposal. What do I do!He asked himself.

Save Kota. It was as simple as that. In this instance, in this one singular instance, his mission was not to defeat this creature. It was to save his teammate, or to go down trying. Resolved to his mission, Mitsuo sprang into action, reaching into his weapons pouch. Noticing his movements, the creature looked down just as Mitsuo let several kunai fly with explosive tags attached aimed squarely at its face. As the tags exploded in the creatures face, it reared backwards slightly in surprise, taking no damage from the attack, but giving Mitsuo time to form handseals. Flowing youton chakra into his hands, Mitsuo formed a tennis ball size orb of lava, throwing it towards the creature's face as he launched upwards towards the creature's 'talon' that was pinning Kota to the wall. Struck in the face by his lava ball, the creature let out an angry roar, the bubling liquid searing into its face. As Mitsuo near the creature's talon, Mitsuo threw his weight into a single punch, striking the talon and while not completely breaking it, the strike caused several cracks to form in the talon and moved it backwards just enough to remove it from Kota's body, allowing the genin to fall to the ground below.

Yes! He thought to himself as he looked back at his teammate, completely unaware of that the same talon was now swinging at him while he was midair. Striking him just as he looked back at the creature, the talon sent Mitsuo flying through the air and into the wall of the cavern where he impacted with enough force to cause a slight dent in the wall before falling several meters to the cavern floor.

Foolish huuummaann! the creature roared, its eyes now clearly focused on Mitsuo as he slowly pulled himself into a crouched position. That last hit had hurt

You think you stand a chance against me? You are nothing!

With a groan, Kotaru hit the ground after Mitsuo freed him. Blood started to puddle on the ground so he pressed his hand against the open wound to apply pressure. As he looked up, his comrade was hit and was sent flying through the air. "MITSUO!" The creature roared and turned toward the chuunin as if it was preparing to attack.

You will be the first to die.

Though it pained his shoulder, the genin quickly formed hand seals and a spike made of katon chakra formed in his hand. He reared back and threw it with all his strength towards the back of the spirit's head. "Mitsuo, climb!" The jutsu reached its mark, but the creature was barely phased as it exploded against its body. "Shit...." He manifested his melashiin as the centipede spirit turned slowly toward him. He backed away, trying to lure the spirit farther away from Mitsuo; it worked, but now he had to deal with an angry insect. "I got it," he yelled to his friend, "just climb and look for the stone!"

At that the spirit laughed, the sound like thousands of hissing insects caught in its throat. You seek the stone. It will destroy you!

"Go!" Kotaru urged, knowing Mitsuo would want to stay and protect him instead. The spirit turned its attention fully to Kotaru, its antennae undulating threateningly in his direction. The genin pulled out two kunai in response, then threw three more to be held by his melashiin. "Find it so we can get out of here!"

As the spirit roared once more, a fine red mist spread from its mouth and covered the immediate area around its head. At the same time, Kotaru threw one of the kunai in his hand toward it. As soon as the kunai touched the mist it began to disintegrate, and the genin watched as the kunai completely disappeared just before it reached the spirit. "Oh, fuck!"

Mitsuo had barely gotten himself off of the ground as the creature charged, only for its attention to be diverted when Kota attacked it from a different angle. As the creature turned to attack Kota, Mitsuo felt a strong urge to attack it again and lure it away from the genin, but Kota's plea gave him pause. While he didn't like it, he had to trust that Kota was going to be able to handle himself, at least as a distraction. He would die for the kid, clearly, but sometimes he just had to give him a chance.

"Just don't die on me!" Mitsuo yelled back as he ran for the 'stairs'. Approaching the first stair, Mitsuo launched into the air and began ascending the steps. One after another, he leapt up the steps while the battle below raged on. Faster and faster he moved, his legs starting to burn as he got closer to the top. As he came up upon the final steps, he noticed that the area at the top seemed to flatten out into a landing of sorts and as he reached the top he found.....nothing. No orb, no caverns, no anything just a bunch of dirt and rocks.

"There has to be more." Mitsuo mumbled to himself as he rushed towards the center of the expansive landing. The area was probably a nest of sorts for the creature, a place for it to rest or do whatever giant centipedes did with their time. With no sign of the stone, Mitsuo rushed back to the top of the stairs. "There's nothing up here!" He called out, though he was unsure if Kota was going to be able to hear him. With no reason to remain up top, Mitsuo began descending the steps in order to rejoin the fight.

As Mitsuo searched above, Kotaru was busy below doing his best to stay alive. The centipedes many, many legs lunged for him in an attempt to grab him, pin him down, impale him. But Kotaru leaped and dashed out of the way, each time only barely avoiding behind hit by the spirit's limbs. He threw the rest of his four kunai, one after the other, but again the spirit breathed out that red haze and the kunai promptly disintegrated. As the battle raged on and Kotaru did his best just to keep from getting injured again, it sunk in that there was no way for them to beat the centipede spirit at their current strength. Mitsuo might have a chance, but only for a while. Had Kotaru been even a hair slower, it would have been over for him before Mitsuo could have even made it up the first step.

Kotaru wanted to yell to check on Mitsuo, but he didn't dare take his attention away from the spirit for even a second. He used his melashiin to grab onto a dangling stalactite, but the spirit anticipated his move. It swung its entire body towards Kotaru so that its tail end smashed into the rocks and sent Kotaru tumbling down. He managed to whip one of his tendrils around another stalactite but it only slowed his fall.

As he fell, he performed hand seals and watched as the beast breathed out more of the red haze. "Shit shit shit!" He somehow managed to twist his body so that he landed on his feet, and his move earlier slowed his decent enough that the landing wasn't painful. When his feet hit the ground another spike of katon formed in his hand, and instead of aiming towards its head that was surrounded by the strange mist, he aimed lower. The spike hit its mark, and the spirit reared back. But it was clear that the attack didn't do much damage, and Kotaru was once again on the run as the centipede moved to once again impale Kotaru with its talons.

'Hurry up, Mits!'

As Mitsuo bounded back down the gigantic steps, he had a birds eye view of the battle below, watching as Kota dipped and dived in every direction to avoid being hit by the creature. That's it, just keep moving! he thought as he watched. As Kota fought back, Mitsuo began to take note of the creature's various abilities. While it was relatively slow, its strikes were fairly accurate and that mist that it breathed out seemed to dissolve anything that it touched. Oddly enough, every time the creature seemed to exhale the deep rust colored mist, a weird orb of a similar color embedded on the creature's forehead would glow ever so faintly until the attack was over. It was almost as if...

Mitsuo stopped in his tracks for a moment as a light bulb seemingly went off in his head. Quickly thinking through everything that Kota had told him about this mystical stone, he knew that it supposedly possessed the power of pure destruction and was supposed to be hidden somewhere within these caverns. While the 'power of pure destruction' was never really expanded upon, what if it was the same power that this centipede creature was using? That red mist that it expelled seemed to destroy anything in its path. If he followed that train of thought, what if that orb on the creature's face was the same orb that they were looking for?

Beginning his charge down the stairs once again, Mitsuo began performing handseals, flowing kouton chakra into his hands in the process. As he passed the halfway point on the stairs, Mitsuo leapt off of the staircase in the direction of the creature below him as his fists became covered in silvery metal. As Mitsuo descended, he brought his fists together and as he neared the creature's head, he swung his fist down, bashing the creature in the top of its head and causing its head to droop towards the ground with momentum of Mitsuo's strike. Rolling as he landed on the ground, Mitsuo immediately began performing handseals as the creature roared and stumbled backwards, dazed from the strike and shaking its head back and forth. Slamming his hands to the ground, several chained swords erupted from the earth and began wrapping around the creature, one around each of its front legs with the final one wrapping around its neck and pulling it closer to the ground.

"That stone on its forehead!" Mitsuo yelled out to Kota, "I think that's the stone we're looking for!"

D-Ranked Ninjutsu
After performing the correct hand seals, the user will coat their hands in a silvery metal. This hardens their hands considerably, allowing them to punch and fight with their fists as if they had +3 strength. The metal causes their fists to become less dextrous, however, and reduces their taijutsu by 3. This is, however, unable to protect the user from attacks as the metal coating is too thin.

*Kouton • Lock Down
B-Ranked Ninjutsu
After performing the required hand seals, the user will kneel down and place their hands on the ground. Then, three chains with 50cm long blades at the end will burst from the ground toward a target at 20 speed. They will bind the target with 20 strength and attempt to either stake them into the ground or impale them upon the blades in the end of the chains. These chains remain taut and strong for 5 posts.

That was all Kotaru needed to hear. With a grin he dashed toward the spirit just as Mitsuo began to bind it with his chains. The centipede's head was pulled down and it screamed, red haze spreading from its mouth to try to defend itself. It was at that moment that Kotaru noticed the glow from the orb shaped structure that slightly protruded from its head. "Hold it down!" The red haze drifted to the chains that bound it and it began to eat it away, but it wasn't enough. The haze ate away at the chains but it dissipated quickly, leaving the chains mostly intact. By that time Kotaru had leaped onto the centipede's body and ran up the segments until he stood atop its head.

The stone was smooth and roughly the size or a grapefruit, and it was embedded in the centipede's forehead. Just as Mitsuo noted, it had a faint glow to it every time the creature breathed that strange mist from its mouth. The genin cackled as he removed two kunai from his pouch and crouched next to the stone.. "Found your stooo~oone!"

Insolent humaaaaan! It will destroy you! I will destroy you!

"I bet this is the source of that power of yours, hm? You know, the one that disintegrates things?" He expected the creature to struggle more, but for a moment its thrashes decreased in ferocity and it paused.

It is not meant for humans! You will be destroyed like all others before you and the stone will return to me. You cannot harness its power.

The genin placed the kunai on the sides of the stone where the flesh was discolored to the color of rust. He stabbed the ends into the spirit's flesh, and the centipede hissed and began its thrashing once more. The flesh there was softer than he expected; perhaps the flesh around the stone was tainted and vulnerable. Swiftly, Kotaru swiped his weapons in a deep, scooping motion and the stone and the surrounding flesh was severed from the spirit's body. Immediately, where the spirit's body had been red changed to a deep blue and the centipede went limp. He picked up the stone and it was surprisingly hot, and he hissed in pain as he quickly opened his bag and dropped it inside. With his prize won, Kotaru jumped from his perch, and for a second he thought the centipede had been defeated.

But then, it roared, a sound much louder and more ear shattering than before. The roar shook Kotaru deep to his core and he whirled around, immediately on the defensive. After the spirit demonstrated that it was very much alive, he expected it to lunge for him. But the spirit instead thrashed its body about wildly, straining against Mitsuo's chains. Its backside crashed into the rock formations around them and shattered them, sending deadly shrapnel barelling through the cavern.

"We gotta move!" Kotaru's ran toward Mitsuo and used his body to block pointed shrapnel from hitting Mitsuo. He had held his melashiin up defensively so the stone pierced the shiin instead, and though it hurt like a bitch at least it didn't impale his friend in the chest. He flung it away and motioned toward the exit. "Let's go let's go!"

Mitsuo didn't need to be told twice. As soon as Kota forcibly removed the stone from the creatures forehead, it began to violently thrash about, shattering the chains that Mitsuo had used to hold it down. Dodging falling rocks and shrapnel, Mitsuo followed Kota to the entrance to the cave that they had entered from, sprinting as fast as he could for as long as he could, leaving the sounds of the creature's rage behind. The pair of shinobi ran and ran, through the tunnels that had brought them to the creature's nest and not stopping until they had reached the cavern that they had used as shelter to sleep in the 'night' before.

As their runs slowed to a crawl, Mitsuo essentially collapsed on the cavern floor, breathing heavy from both the fight and the retreat. "That...was fucking...insanity." Mitsuo said through ragged breath as he laid on his back, "You owe me SO much." he added. The pair would wait at there for what would seem like several hours, recuperating their energy and strength and patching up their various wounds from the fight. "What do you say we get out of this place?" Mitsuo finally asked, pulling himself to his feet.

Once they had regained some energy, the pair would continue back the way that they had come, following the same tunnel until they reached the cavern with the lake. Cautiously entering the cavern, Mitsuo noted that the giant eel from earlier was no where to be seen. It was likely that it had only surfaced and attacked them last time because his chain jutsu had struck it while he had been saving Kota from drowning. If they avoided touching the water, there was a good chance it wouldn't surface again. Following that idea, the pair stuck close to the wall, slowly moving through the cavern until they reached the other side and followed the only tunnel, leading them back to where they had entered the caves in the first place.

"Thank god for fresh air." Mitsuo said as they exited the cave and walked out into what appeared to be the early morning sun. It felt good to be outside again, feeling the sunlight and not surrounded by nothing but stone and creatures trying to kill them. "I wonder how long we were in there."

They reached the cavern, exhausted from their ordeal, and Kotaru fell face first into the dirt. He turned over and gave Mitsuo a thumbs up and then his arm immediately collapsed back to the ground. He didn't want to think about how he would have to make this up to his friend, but he was glad that he had the chuunin by his side throughout their unsanctioned mission.

When they rested, Kotaru did his best to mend the deep gash in his shoulder. He was far from a medical nin, so at best he applied more pressure to stop the bleeding and wrapped it in shreds of his shirt. The two managed to find their way back to the cave entrance where Kotaru found his discarded jacket and put it back on. The cold air was a big change from the hot, damp atmosphere of the cave, and the temperature drop shocked his lungs and sent a violent chill throughout his body.

"There's no telling," Kotaru answered about how long they had been in the cave. He looked up at the sky, and the sun's position indicated that it was late afternoon. "But I'm sure we can find out." The two made their way back to the village and Kotaru led them to the inn they had visited. As expected, the old man from before was at the desk, and when he saw the two shinobi approach - beat up and looking like they'd been through hell - the man shook his head. "Ya back," he greeted, disapproval evident in his voice. Kotaru gave a slight smile and nodded.

"We went on a bit of ah...an adventure."

"YOU WENT TO CAVES!"

Kotaru flinched at the man's tone. He was not happy. "No, no. We went...hiking. For a while."

"THREE DAYS HIKING?!"

Kotaru looked back at his friend, his eyes wide with surprise. It hadn't felt like three days, but at least they knew how much time they had been gone, and how much time they had to get back to either the caravan or the village, whichever came first. The genin looked back to the man, but he shook a finger in Kotaru's direction and wouldn't let him say more. "Go home! NOW!"

The young Akari huffed and turned to walk away. He was hoping they could have rested there some more since his shoulder was aching terribly, but perhaps it was for the best if they left as quickly as possible. He muttered a soft, "Let's go," to his friend, but his sour mood wouldn't last long. After all, he had gotten his precious stone.
