[Plotboard] The First of Three

Post by Niro » Sun Jun 02, 2019 7:29 pm

The first rays of golden morning sun light began to to spill over Rock Country and the rest of the Elemental Continent early this morning. Its sleep addled inhabitants began to stir from their slumber and rub the crust of sleep from their eyes and dried drool from their mouths. Other citizens were already up and keen to starting their days while even rarer some continue from the previous day, their poor bodies unwilling or unable to welcome the sweet comforting embracing of sleep.

Three dark blurs raced across and over the countryside of Rock Country, their destination being one of the daimyo's more frequently visited cities. The city was situated and built in the more fertile region of Rock Country with a small, landlocked river running through it east to west. The fast blurs moved quickly, their pace having never once wavered since they had first departed from their Village in the middle of the night due to the secret nature of their meeting.

The squad of three shinobi did not enter the city through its front gate. Instead, they circled around it to a broken down shack on the outskirts of the city's defenses. The widest of the three figures moved to the door where he took out a kunai and ran it across a weathered, calloused palm. Once blood freely flowed from the wound, the man pressed the bleeding limb to the door which lit up in response. A spider web of a complex fuuinjutsu lit up across the door before the glow died down and the door unlocked with a click, allowing the three entrance.

Once inside, the three men shed their cloaks to reveal Chuutetsu, Ishidai and two of his bannin; Akari, Tatsuo and Karuki, Hibiki. Akari, Tatsuo was a newer bannin who led the villages defense force, Jousai, and maintained the Catacombs filled with unruly spirits below the village while Karuki, Hibiki was a 40 year veteran of Iwagakure's shinobi forces, the Tsuchikage's right hand man, and second in command of all of Iwagakure's shinobi forces. The The dark robes concealed their usual attire and equipment but it did not take long for that to change. The three men tore off the robes and pulled scrolls from their supply pouches. In an instant the cloaks were gone and in their place was each shinobi's ceremonial robes. Their meeting with the daimyo was top secret yet the man demanded they meet him in formal garb.

After several minutes, each man was garbed in his ceremonial robes. Ishidai's Kage robes were the traditional white and brown of his office while Tatsuo's were maroon and Hibiki's were purple.

"Let us get going. It would be wise not to make him wait." Ishidai grunted, discomfort caused by the starchy and itchy clothes evident in his voice and demeanor. The 19th Tsuchikage removed a floor panel to reveal a descending set of stairs that led the group into a dark corridor wide enough for only one person at a time with torches on the walls for light. Both Tatsuo and Hibiki elected not to say anything as they trekked through the hidden passage to the daimyo's palace.

Hours seem to fly by like the wind itself before the group found themselves ascending a new set of steps into a darkened room. Ishidai cleared his throat for a moment before the room was illuminated and revealed its contents. The trio's exit was the daimyo's fireplace in his personal study. In front of them was a wide desk housing the daimyo and his most trusted advisers.

"Let us begin then, gentlemen." The daimyo ordered, offering three seats to his guests on the opposite side of the table after their long trek.

The Daimyo of Rock Country was as attractive as he was patient. Thin blue-grey eyes watched as the three guests entered the room, late by his standards. He pulled at his wiry thin black and grey beard, and his face was etched in wrinkles and scars. One scar was the result of a nasty burn he had received in his use to chin and neck, but he kept the thick, reddened skin in full view. Self-imposed formality had demanded the daimyo arrive thirty minutes before the meeting time so that his attendants could prepare both him and the building in which he would meet the leaders of Iwagakure. It was decorum that not even the daimyo cared for, but decades of doing things the traditional and tedious way had been so ingrained in the man that most of the time he couldn't do without it. It was also a wasted one, for in the end the daimyo simply met them in a huge private study, a large fire roaring to keep the chill in the air at bay. By the time the three Iwagakure shinobi arrived, he was a bit annoyed by the wait.

After he ordered his guests to be seated the daimyo looked around the room to his trusted advisors. Two men and one woman sat at his side, their ages varying from mid-thirties to past sixty. The daimyo himself was officially fifty-eight, though in truth his exact age was known to very few. "I'm surprised to see you are still Tsuchikage, Ishidai," the daimyo began, his voice lighter and kinder than his countenance would suggest. He spoke to the village leader with the sort of informality that most wouldn't dare use when speaking to the man. The daimyo's station, however, afforded him that right. "You were always reluctant in regards to taking leadership, but as expected Iwagakure has flourished under your guidance." He looked to Hibiki next, his expression unchanging. "Hibiki." He had grown used to the bannin's taciturn nature and wasted no needless words on him.

"And this must be Akari Tatsuo. I'd heard how young you are, but perhaps it's true that seeing is believing." The man rubbed his chin thoughtfully as his gaze cut into the youngest bannin. He hadn't attended the boy's bannin ceremony, and after taking a gander at the Akari he briefly wish he had. There had been two others honored along with this Tatsuo, even one who was several years younger. Perhaps an error had been made when he decided to skip the event. His interest in the village's newest bannin had suddenly grown.

The daimyo carried on after a pause to allow Tatsuo to respond, turning his attention back to Ishidai. "There are several matters to discuss so I expect we will be here for a while. Servants will bring food and drink. In the meantime, which topic would you like to breech first then, Lord Tsuchikage?"

Ishidai, Hibiki, and Tatsuo bowed their heads in respect for the leader of Earth Country in turn as he addressed each of them individually. Ishidai and Hibiki held themselves with such poise to prevent any nervous looks. Tatsuo was trying his best to emulate the two shinobi as this was his first ever event meeting someone of such influence and stature.

Ishidai cleared his throat which signaled Hibiki to begin unsealing several scrolls he had stored within his robes. With a puff of smoke, manila folders were unsealed and released from the scroll. The Bannin motioned for one of the servants to hand the paperwork over to the Daimyo and his advisors. One of the older servants moved to retrieve the folders for the court, his eyes never actually looking at the folders. Inside were state secrets and it would be nothing for either party to dispose of him. The older gentleman placed a manila folder folder before each of those seated at the table before stepping back and bowing low to the floor, and then retreating into the shadows of the room.

"Inside these folders is the information our scouts have gathered in regards to our first topic: Activity involving Fire and Lightning Countries." The sitting Tsuchikage began, hoping the Daimyo and his advisors had opened their dockets by now. "This is the information gathered by our agents in the minor countries bordering the Lands of Fire and Lightning:

Over the last few years we have compiled reports about decreased activity from Kumo while Konoha helped to 'free' Whirlpool. Due to Kumo's neutrality, we had left the period of low activity from them alone. However, recent reports have included sightings of shinobi crossing through the minor countries into the Land of Fire and Lightning and vice versa. This prompted us to look into their decrease in activity. According to the information we were able to gather from the citizens of Lightning country, we were able to find out that their village had been attacked and the country was embroiled in a civil war between various noble factions.

The war is already over, and the region is stabilizing and beginning to return to normal albeit at a very slow rate. The situation is fragile, for now we have left it alone and focused on building our own might just in case something forms between Konoha and Kumo."

Hibiki and Tatsuo stayed silent as the Tsuchikage himself presented the information.  Ishidai fell silent for a moment as the men and women in front of him dissected the information given to them before starting up once again.

"The currently suggested plans of action are to begin forming alliances with the countries surrounding Rock. We cannot risk letting any of them fall into the clutches of either Lightning or Fire.

We are too late in regards to Whirlpool country but that does not mean we cannot secure footholds in others. The village has been devising teams of diplomats to be sent out to these countries. Those who peacefully join hands with us shall have nothing befall them and shall benefit from our agreement, but those who refuse will require a little extra... work.

Those who resist are to be broken quietly; no ground invasion or sacking of villages within their country. We do not need the other nations knowing that we are suspicious about their meetings. Teams made up of Genjutsu users specializing in coercion along with Iijutsu users to both poison water supplies and to heal those who fall sick, so as to make these lesser nations indebted to us for our relief and make ourselves look exceptional in the meantime. The two nations worth worrying about are Iron and Fur. Having Iron as backup in case of an emergency is like having a second Hidden Village in one's back pocket with how many samurai populate the country.

Fur also has a substantial amount of samurai forces that would be incredibly helpful in dealing with the other villages. I expect them to be the most difficult in converting to our side. I am authorizing the trade of an Academy infrastructure and curriculum to be offered to these two nations in return for their allegiance. built and initially supplied by Iwagakure shinobi. We can offer other things such as money or raw materials but neither Fur nor Iron are hurting for imports."
Ishidai finished before once again falling silent as he allowed the information to be processed and questions thought up.

The daimyo's brows furrowed as he began flipping through the pages of the envelope. Both he and his advisors listened intently as Ishidai explained the concerned news about Lightning Country. The people of Earth had understandably never given much thought to the isolated country. They viewed them as borderline cowards without any strong convictions, and for generations they had been content in ignoring them. But this news sat uncomfortably in his gut. 'A civil war....' the country leader thought, dwelling on those words. Perhaps it was a mistake to think so little of Lightning; a civil war could have provided ample opportunity to undermine and disrupt - perhaps even destroy - Kumogakure. 'Wasted opportunity.'

The next bit of news was troublesome. The daimyo in no way wanted Kumo and Konoha cozying up to one another; their countries weren't exactly close together, but if they managed to create a formal alliance it would create an even stronger obstacle between Rock Country and its sole ally. Water Country was on the other side of the continent; it was difficult enough to even trade without interference.

When the Tsuchikage paused, the daimyo momentarily set his papers down onto the table. His advisors started to whisper amongst themselves urgently but quickly silenced themselves as the daimyo began to speak. "I'm amazed I didn't know the extent this information about Kumo and Konoha sooner," the man began, looking first from Ishidai then to Hibiki. "You've been gathering this information for years, you say? Strange that Fujiwara, may he rest in peace, rarely mentioned this. I'll have to choose his replacement carefully. Nakatomi will suffice for now."

The daimyo was naturally a suspicious man; he never would have gotten to where he was had he not been cautious at all times. But he trusted Fujiwara more than most, and if the man had not reported this information then the daimyo was sure that he, like most, didn't think Kumogakure important enough to spend much time thinking about. An unfortunate oversight, but a simple oversight nonetheless. Ishidai finally finished talking and the daimyo gave a small, pleased sigh. He felt fortunate that someone like Ishidai was the leader of the village; it seemed the man had already thought ahead and came to the same conclusion that the daimyo had. The Earth Country leader had for some time thought about expanding the country's influence to surrounding areas; all he needed was the right moment to extend his reach.

"I'm glad you mentioned this. Rei." At the daimyo's beckoning a well-dressed servant emerged from the back wall holding a long scroll in his hand. He and another servant skillfully unfurled it on the table, revealing a huge map of the continent. "You are right. With Konoha poking their nose into Whirlpool there's a chance they'll do the same to every backwoods country within their sights. It's time we make our own moves. Fur Country is a gamble; they are friendly with all five Great Nations. It won't be easy to win them over. Iron, on the other hand, we may have a stronger chance. But I like the plan. Send your best, your strongest, to both countries, but make sure you do so without alerting those bastards from Konoha and Suna. While we are here, I have concerns about the Borderlands."

The daimyo pulled out tiny figurines in the shape of a battle-ready samurai from seemingly nowhere, placing them one by one on the map. "Grass Country. Waterfall Country. These two in particular I want secure borders at the very least. They're the most direct route from Fire Country to Earth. And here. Pebble Country is a war-torn hell hole that borders us and Wind. Silver Country as well. It shouldn't be difficult to bring them into our growing Sphere. The Land of Stars is tricky. I want eyes on them, and quickly. I want to know where they stand."

Then, the damiyo turned his eyes on Tatsuo. He had been very quiet and the man didn't yet have a good read on the young bannin. But if he was important enough to attend the meeting, then his opinion was presumably important enough to hear. "What say you?" he asked, looking the Akari in the eye. "Is this something we as a country can achieve? Are we missing anything?"

Tatsuo and Hibiki had stayed as quiet as possible while Ishidai relayed the information Iwagakure had collected about the other Great and Minor nations to the Daimyo. The young Bannin knew better than to speak out of turn or interject in any sort during this meeting lest he draw the ire of the Daimyo and his court.

A look of confusion briefly flashed across his visage as the Daimyo asked for his opinion on the matters discussed. His brow furrowed and his eyes shifted to Hibiki for help but found nothing besides a small upturn of his lips. Realizing he would have no help or anyone to save him, Tatsuo cleared his throat.

"I believe we can easily sway or otherwise convince several countries quite easily. Pebble, for instance, is as you've said, Daimyo-sama, a war torn hell hole. During a mission of mine to the country I had come across rogue shinobi pillaging Pebble as they saw fit. Offering protection and installing our own figureheads would be easy." Tatsuo explained to those within the room, recounting the time he had come across a former shinobi of Konoha within the war torn country.

"Fur and Iron, I believe we all agree, are the main countries we wish to sway to our side in the coming days. Although Fur is friendly and trades with everyone, they're also quite a distance away from any nations besides our own and Wind. My suggestion would be to hire rogue shinobi to attack all supply lines besides those running to Suna. It'd move eyes away from us and hopefully convinces the other nations Wind has broken away from their alliances and is trying to strike out on it's own. Once distrust has spread between Fur and other nations, we offer the cheapest protective services and buy their unsold product in bulk for cheap prices. We destabilize and force Fur into trading and relying solely on us and our allies. Iron, however, is a different matter and I am not too keen on any one idea. Perhaps another may have an idea?" Tatsuo finished with a question designed to shift the Daimyo's attention anywhere else as the bannins vision shifted from the Daimyo to his advisors to Ishidai and Hibiki and finally stopping on the Daimyo once more.

Neither Hibiki nor Ishidai offered much in the way of suggestions. Hibiki was terse at best, and at this moment he remained silent. Ishidai looked as though he was mulling over the possibilities. He had already discussed regarding Fur, but as far as Iron was concerned he was still unsure of the best way to proceed.

As hoped, the new young bannin wasn't there just for show. His input was more than helpful; in fact, it gave the daimyo more insight on the Akari's train of thought, and how useful he would be as a bannin. It seemed he had a ruthlessness about him, a cunning streak that was essential in Iwagakure's leaders. Though the daimyo was still wary in regard to Fur, Tatsuo's suggestion opened the door for confidence to enter him.

"Pebble is a good start. When one piece falls, the surrounding ones will follow," the daimyo said with a nod. "But Pebble is such a small piece. I - we - need the larger pieces to be in play."

The next person to speak was one of the daimyo's advisors, a chubby man with narrow eyes and painted lips. "If I may, my lord. Iron Country has not a daimyo, but a taisho, and his word trumps everything else. Not only that but the people of that country don't exactly trust shinobi. It's a neutral relationship, at best, so we likely will not do well if we try anything resembling diplomacy. Not only that but the last thing we want is to foster distrust toward shinobi in any way. It may be best to erm...surreptitiously orchestrate events in the country that would encourage the taisho to lean on us, their nearest neighbor. Whether that be secret sabotage of their resources, or by controlling the taisho directly, is yet to be decided."

There was a long pause during which the daimyo pulled at his beard. He was quite keen to the idea of taking control of the taisho; it would be much easier to sway a nation by swaying its authoritarian leader. "Ishidai, do you have any men who would be suited to tackle Iron Country?"

Tatsuo's mind immediately went to Kotaru as they decided leaning on the Iron Country leader may be the best course of action. The boy was one of, if not THE, best at genjutsu in the entire village of Iwagakure. However, the younger bannin definitely lacked in the subtle category with his stronger jutsu. Maybe he wouldn't be best.

Ishidai was quiet for several moments as the the Daimyo brought the question back around to him. There were several avenues they could take in "coercing" Iron Country to their side.

"Although they are not shinobi, the samurai of Iron are no strangers to ninjutsu or genjutsu. If one of our shinobi were to be caught, our entire plan would falter. I believe we play Iron Country slowly. Poison their wells and crops and await the request for help. Once Iron is requesting medical assistance, our shinobi will begin to publicly help Iron residents. They, like Pebble, will become indebted to us. Combining this with an offer to establish an academy system will hopefully be plenty in securing their loyalty.

The issue, however, is the fact that there are not many prominent poison wielders running around our village. We are more likely to find a capable medic than a poison expert. The good thing is the fact we have recently tightened our alliance with Kiri who has one of the foremost poison masters on the continent. I propose the Iron Country coercion be done by a joint team of Iwa and Kiri shinobi."
The current Tsuchikage proposed before once again falling silent while awaiting the Daimyo's reaction

The daimyo grunted grumpily at Ishidai's suggestion. The idea seemed time consuming, and although the best plans could not be rushed the daimyo wasn't a man known for his patience. Daimyos of the past would take different measures, moving quickly and boisterously by raising the banner of war and destruction. But as much as the daimyo wanted to get things underway, he did not wish to do anything prematurely or take too many unnecessary risks.

The man's lip jutted into a brief scowl and he seemed reluctant to return to a more neutral expression. "You are well studied on manners relating to shinobi. If this poisoning idea will produce the results we want, then I grant my approval. But just in case, keep your shinobi that are proficient in ninjutsu and genjutsu on standby. It's best to have more than one option.

"As far as Kirigakure"
the man continued, nearly growling their ally's name, "I suppose we may as well make use of our alliance. Send word to them of the plan. Now, what other matters do we need to tend to?"

The remainder of the meeting was dull, filled with queries about resources, the slave trade, and the condition and goings on of the country's smaller villages. After nearly two hours the daimyo stood, signaling the end of the meeting. His advisors quickly stood and bowed as he left the room, flanked by his guards and servants. The advisors soon followed, leaving the bannin trio in the room alone.

"Well done holding your own," Hibikii commented gruffly, regarding Tatsuo with a brief look, sitting back down. Although the daimyo had excused himself for the time being, it was clear the Iwa shinobi weren't yet done with important meetings. "Making a good impression on the daimyo is important as you come into power." With those words Hibiki gave the Tsuchikage quick side glance. The man had long lamented his long tenure as Tsuchikage and had been considering a successor. Hibiki stiffened in anticipation for what they would possibly discuss next. "Speaking of which. How far would you go for power, Akari Tatsuo?"

The rest of the meeting involve much less sensitive topics, topics Tatsuo had some knowledge in but his own duties prevented him from becoming intimately involved. The young Bannin continued to hold his tongue unless spoken to first, providing quips here and there when asked and reporting on Jousai activities and efforts involved in the relatively calm Spirit Colony far below the villages depths.

An intermission allowed him to finally release a breath he did not know he was holding as the final member of the Daimyo's Court disappeared behind the door and it was only the three shinobi for now. Hibiki's question caught him off guard.

For a moment.

"Power is just a means to an ends for me. My goal is to keep my village, my family, protected and healthy. By any means necessary. Whether that be through poisoning others or conquering them."

"Hmph." Initially, a soft grunt from Hibiki was the only response Tatsuo received. It wasn't a bad answer, not by any means. In fact, the two older bannin were hoping that his response would be something like the one he had given. Tatsuo, along with his friends Kotaru and Mitsuo, was one of the most talented shinobi to come from Iwagakure in generations. But out of the three, Tatsuo was the most imposing. His physicality far outpaced his teammates, and the man's strength alone was a force that the village could someday rally behind. Still, although the young bannin had achieved several impressive feats, both Ishidai and Hibiki believed his true power had yet to be discovered. There was something he needed to do.

Finally, Hibiki spoke again. "You're definitely a product of Iwagakure. Your strength and leadership is what got you here. You, and you alone. Understand?"

"Just get on with it, Hibiki." Ishidai couldn't stand the build up. Rather than ease into the subject he wanted it out in the open.

Hibiki paused only to frown. "We know of your strength - some of it, at least. The fact is, you need a challenge. A test."

"A kage test."

"Right. Ishidai won't be Tsuchikage forever. He would rather eat his own foot." The kage grunted in agreement. "It's time for the next generation to take up leadership. You are by far the best candidate." Hibiki gave Tatsuo a moment to digest the situation. It wasn't the first time someone told Tatsuo he should be Tsuchikage some day, but it was certainly the first time shinobi of Ishidai and Hibiki's caliber had said such a thing to him. "The daimyo is aware of the situation. If you choose to accept, your kage exam will begin immediately."

Tatsuo REALLY wanted to say something back to Hibiki when the older bannin claimed the Akari's strength came from his own endeavors and hard work and his alone. He knew that wasn't true in the slightest; his team had helped forge him into the shinobi he was today by fighting with each other day in and day out against whatever they were thrown up against. Tatsuo felt indignation as they insinuated he hadn't been tested by his mission, the mission down into the depth of the Catacombs filling his mind's eye for a moment. THAT had been a test; a test of survival, whoever crawled out of that hole was the survivor of the fittest.

"You two want me to take the Kage Exam?" Tatsuo asked, his face scrunched up in confusion as he processed the words spoken to him. The last he had heard of anyone attempting a Kage Exam was Ken'ichi and he had failed before truly beginning. It was a miracle the man had been able to keep his title of bannin, most who bowed out of the Exam were forever disgraced but it seemed Ken'ichi had extenuating circumstances that had excused him.

"I...accept. How does this work?" Tatsuo answered the two men in front of him, a look of determination etched across his facial features as he awaited the explanation of the Kage Exam and the aftermath.

Ishidai looked to Hibiki before looking to Tatsuo. He couldn't exactly spoil the entire exam for the boy but he could let him know of what would happen after.

"Assuming you pass, you'll be the Tsuchikage-Elect. Once I step down, you'll step up and take my position. Until then, you'll be working with me to prepare you for the coming years and ease you into the transition. Hibiki, anything to add about the actual exam?" Ishidai asked, wanting to get this show on the road already.

Although Hibiki's expression appeared as dour as ever, he was in truth quite pleased with Tatsuo's answer. He had no reason to believe the young bannin would not accept the task, but there was always the possibility that Tatsuo simply was not the type to want to be Tsuchikage. Then again, the man thought, neither was Ishidai and the man had maintained his title for years.

"The exam - the Trials, rather - is a series of three tasks that will be the ultimate test of your abilities. Your life will be on the line, and you will use every bit of knowledge you have as a shinobi, every ounce of strength that you have. It won't be like anything you've ever experienced." With that, Hibiki turned toward the Tsuchikage and bowed. "I'll start preparing him now. I'll be back before the daimyo returns."

With that Hibiki motioned for Tatsuo to follow him, leading him through the huge double doors and down an adjacent hall. They walked in silence for a few minutes, walking through a maze of halls and courtyards. Hibiki finally spoke again once they reached a large, empty room. Despite the fact they appeared to be alone, the bannin still took care to keep his voice down. "The first test is a test of survival. As Tsuchikage you must be able to endure the harshest situations in the most unforgiving environments." The bannin began to form a long string of hand seals, never taking his eyes off the young Akari. Once he completed the seal he pressed his finger to Tatsuo's forehead. "Come back alive. Understand?"

Tatsuo really, really wanted to interupt the older, gray-haired Bannin about just what these Trials would entail. He assumed Hibiki would fill him in and, after walking some way into an empty room, his patience was rewarded.

The first Trial was one of survival. It being an extreme survival exercise was something he should have expected, honestly. Iwagakure was built on being tough and able to survive. This test took that very belief and made it into a very real obstacle he would have to not only survive but conquer. The hardy, weather worn people of the village would not follow someone so weak as to die in anything besides ferocious battle.

Tatsuo wanted to object as Hibiki went through a string of hand seals. He knew what was coming next, some sort of genjutsu, and once cast he knew he could beat it but allowed himself to be ensnared in it's spell. The young Bannin crumpled to the ground as his consciousness faded, the Hibiki stepping forward to prevent the Akari's head from impacting the floor.

Several dark figures emerge from the Shadows of the room, their midnight black clothing and mass hiding their identity from all. They collected the unconscious young adult before exiting the room, the first trial ready to begin.

In the northern region of Rock Country, snow fell and wind whipped through the mighty pines, spruces, larches, and other trees native to the region. A black mass quickly moved through the coniferous forests before stopping abruptly. Finally still, the black mass was revealed to be the black swathed figures from earlier. The figure leading the pack removed a map from its clothing before nodding to those behind it.

This spot was exactly 75 miles north of Iwagakure no Sato and the starting point for the first trial. A large bundle of maroon clothes was thrown from the black mass which disappeared just as quickly as it appeared. They have left the Bannin with his clothing and gear but he would have to forage for food and water by himself. It only took several minutes for Tatsuo to awake from his genjutsu induced slumber. A loud groan and the sound of bones clicking into place emanated from below the snowbank he had been unceremoniously tossed into. Tatsuo sat up from lying on his back before finally transitioning into standing. Dark purple eyes took in the surroundings and he immediately knew he was not in Iwa anymore. Snow covered tree stretched in every direction with the odd breakup in scenery such as boulders here and there.

Tatsuo started to pat himself down and remove some of the snow from his clothing. He could already feel the ice melting into water and soaking into his clothes. His first mission would be to get dry and then find out which way was home so he could give Hibiki a piece or six of his mind in regards to being subject to a genjutsu instead of something simple like drugging. Moving to the pine tree covered in snow to his immediate right, Tatsuo began going over his current inventory in regards to logging and starting this fire. His hands padded at his holster and supply kit, positive he would have something. Disappointingly he only had some kunai, excluding tags, and wire on him. Nothing he possessed would make this easier so the young Bannin went for the method that had taken him so far in his career.

Tatsuo stepped back, planting his feet in a wide L shape as he twisted his hips and begun to generate the needed torque. His right arm mimicked his right leg, sliding back, before his fist rocketed forward into the body of the tree. Nothing seemed to happen for several seconds before a large crack split where his fist had impacted and then the tree fell over defeated. The young adult nodded to himself before punching chunks of the tree off and into firewood. Some of the underbrush could be used for kindling and he could produce a spark by striking the kunai together hard enough. With the assistance of some well kept a kunai, logs, kindling, and a whole lot of cursing, Tatsuo had finally managed to set up a small, dry camp consisting of a fire and himself.

His clothing had finally dried but at this point the sunlight was fading quickly. He decided that sleep would be for the best but not without some sort of look out. Tatsuo flew through a short set of hands seals and in a poof of smoke a double of him appeared. The two Tatsuo's nodded at each other, the original making himself comfortable while the Clone would tend to the fire and keep watch. By the morning, he have recovered the chakra needed to create the clone due to sleep. He hoped to find the North Star but cloudfield filled skies prevented him the luxury and within minutes he dozed off.

Tatsuo was awoken in the morning by the poofing of his shadow clone back into smoke and chakra, the return chakra topping off his reserves. He stretched his limbs and back before rubbing the sleep from his eyes. There was something specific he had been hoping to find while dismantling the tree last night but it had eluded him. Tatsuo would have to find it first before truly beginning his trip back home.

And so Tatsuo began his trek through the forest, keeping his eyes glued to the trees. It seemed either this section of the forest was dry or someone had purposely removed it all. The Akari Bannin continued on, his fingers running over the bark of many trees and up turning any stone he thought large enough to house his treasure. His fingers finally found what he was looking for after what seemed like forever. Feathered Moss clung to the side of the tree facing him and now he knew he was at least headed south. Tatsuo continued into a large empty clearing before deciding that he was done with walking.

The young Bannin crouched low as he built up the needed strength to dash off at his top speed. His toes ground against his boots and he pushed off the ground.

Only for the entire section of the clearing to crumble from the transfer of energy between him and it. A black gaping maw opened up below him as his royal purple eyes turned into saucers and he tumbled down into the depths of the earth and back into the Catacombs, where this trial would truly begin.

By the time the ground began to give way underneath Tatsuo's feet, it was already too late. No amount of speed or physical prowess could save him from the massive cave in, tons upon tons of rock cascading down into the immense cavern system underneath Rock Country; The Catacombs. Tatsuo fell for what seemed like an eternity before he saw the ground, sticking the landing rather easily given his immense physical capabilities. However he'd immediately be met with his first challenge; lack of sight. As the rocks continued to cascade down, many of which threatened to crush him if he wasn't careful to avoid them, he'd watch as the dirt clotted above him slowly but surely, and when all was said and done he'd find himself enshrouded in a lightless abyss.

If and when he somehow found the ability to see, he'd see that the cavern was full of rubble all around him. Upon first inspection, he'd find that he was trapped; no way out of this horrific situation he found himself in. However, if he was perceptive enough he'd find that while he wouldn't see an exit, he would most certainly feel one if he checked the southern side of the cavern, in the form of a faint draft of wind. Given Tatsuo's incredible strength, he'd find that he had no trouble moving the rocks away from the cavern... although the Akari would be wise to exercise caution for fear of making the cave in worse, possibly crushing him if he didn't watch out.

Tatsuo was in free fall for what felt like forever to the young adult. Once the immense shock of the moment wore off, the Bannin channeled the needed amount of chakra to the astra, lacrii, and melashiin sacs housed inside of his body. The sacs began to inflate with the introduction of chakra and form the organic armaments of the man's clan. A dark violet armor studded with spikes and similar in appearance to an insect carapace enveloped his body while his head was engulfed in a similar substance with two dangerous horns sitting atop his head. From the small of his back, twelve thick dark violet tentacles emerged and immediately went to work at keeping away and smashing as much of the debris as possible until he finally hit the ground. His melashiin continued to strike out against the falling debris until finally the sink hole collapse ended.

Tatsuo got up from his position on the ground; hunched over on his knees with his arms protecting his head so his melashiin could freely maneuver. He stretched once standing, his hands reaching out in an attempt to find a wall or something. Instead he found only rubble surrounding his immediate reach.

'Can't use Raiton continuously to light the area without wasting chakra. Don't want to attempt moving the earth too much with Doton...this is a real shitty situation. This is why I grab flares when I go down the normal way. Of course I don't usually carry something to independently produce light. Figures.' Tatsuo complained to himself internally as he began contemplating just what he could do. The village had basically sent him off to win or die so they'd be providing no help.

It was all him, all alone.

'C'mon, there's gotta be something...what kind of creatures live down in places like this anyway? Bats?' Tatsuo wondered, slightly curious if there were any creatures down here. 'Wait...bats. Bats can't see for shit, they use echolocation.' The answer to the impossible problem was now just in front of him. 'How do they do it? With their squeaks? Maybe at first but the adults can use any sound they produce. Now just need to figure it out for myself.'

Tatsuo began to produce the most ridiculous squeaks in an attempt to emulate a bat. It didn't really surprise him when his squeaking brought nothing to his brain. He still couldn't see but now he also felt ridiculous. The Akari Bannin continued to feel his way around the floors of the chamber while producing squeaks similar to those of a mouse. If a mouse were a 6'2" behemoth, anyway.

He continued on with his squeaking and feeling around until his hands reached a wall. His twelve melashiin tendrils immediately spread as wide as they could along the wall as he walked along it to see if, just maybe, there was some kind of way exit out of this dark pit. Tatsuo's walk around the circumference of the pit was rewarded with the information that were no was perceivable exit besides up. Continuing to squeak in an asinine attempt to crack echolocation, he slid down the wall as his thoughts turned towards home. He hadn't told anyone of his mission with the Tsuchikage and Hibiki to meet the Daimyo. Eventually someone, Kotaru or Mitsuo, would ask where he was.

Eventually...

The darkness of the chamber continued to press down upon him, making him feel just a bit more crazier than usual. His eyes were shut tight as he imagined himself lying down on one of the many plateaus around the village. Basking in the sun as its rays beat down, feeling it soak into his skin and bones. He'd take his sisters out to one of the training grounds and show them a new jutsu.

But it was no good. No damn good!

He stopped squeaking, rage boiling within his chest at his predicament, at himself. He could not wish himself out of this lifeless hole in the ground. Tatsuo wanted to scream. To scream and to holler until his voice itself became a weapon. This feeling of helplessness, unable to see, taste, smell, or sense anything was equivalent to torture. Except this was no genjutsu, this was real. His rage continued to build until he finally did scream. It echoed in the chamber, taunting him.

Tatsuo screamed until his throat began to dry and he coughed. It was a small cough but it was just enough to push him over the edge. The instant that small, rough exhale of air left his mouth and produced a sound, it was if lightning had struck the room. He could...see? Not exactly see, per se, due to eve rpresent overwhelming inky blackness. However, Tatsuo could tell with absolute certainty the proximity of the rubble nearest to him. Shocked from his ever growing despair, Tatsuo stood up and coughed again.

Another clear picture of the chamber appeared in his mind's eye before fading. There was rubble surrounding him on every side and the ceiling had been closed off with built up debris. Still with no way out, Tatsuo devoted his current time to mastering his newfound skill. He continued to cough, doing so periodically, to get more repitions under his belt. As he continued to refine his budding echolocation skill, Tatsuo began to see more. At first he could only make out a general shape and location in shape but as he continued he could make out the cracks and crevices in the ground, walls, and rubble rather than just the basic shape. Sure, he couldn't describe a picture in the dark but anything with peaks and/or valleys could be imaged through the echoes.

Tatsuo began to fall into a set of academy kata as he adjusted to his new sense of vision. He began to ready his body to use echolocation in tandem with combat maneuvers. Each exhale he made sharpened the image in his mind as his mastery continued to increase. A particularly deep cough allowed him to see there was a particularly thin portion of the wall with nothing behind it. A grind spread across his lips as he immediately moved over to the section of the wall where he coughed deeply once again to confirm the lack of density behind the stone.

His twelve melashiin tendrils struck forward at the section of wall, hoping to reveal the path forward.

The Akari warrior took his time to train his new sense of 'sight' by mimicking the technique of echolocation perfected by creatures such as bats, and before long he had a relatively adequate understanding of his surroundings. At the least, it was good enough that he would be capable of finding his exit, and removing the rocks stuck in the section of the wall with careful precision to clear himself an exit. Success came eventually, and with that he made his way out of the first cave into a small tunnel. The tunnel measured about 3 meters in diameter; big enough that he wasn't bumping his head and had some room to maneuver, but not much. And without any sort of reliable torch or method of creating light, he'd find progress slow to say the least.

But without anything to hold him back, and no real sense of direction other than 'forward', Tatsuo would roam the tunnels ahead of him for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually however, he'd feel something; Not something so tangible as a touch, or a sound, but more of just a... presence. A sort of sixth sense feeling, like someone watching you even though you don't see anyone around. Shortly after getting that feeling, he'd then get a far more obvious one; rumbling beneath his feet. If he wasn't quick, he'd find himself impaled by a large stalagmite that jut from the earth! He'd find that, even if the first one missed, the moment his foot touched earth again another rumble would be felt, and then another. As if the very ground itself was reacting to him, and wanted him dead for defiling it.

Tatsuo’s melashiin carefully excavated the tunnel mouth from the rock wall, the Akari coughing in short intervals each time he needed to refresh the mental image of the room in his mind. With every cough he grew better at the skill and by now he was noticing that he was subconsciously coughing and clicking his tongue rather than him having to mindfully perform the action. Each time he clicked or coughed, and the sound rebounded back seconds later, he could see the grooves of the rock and the dimensions of the tunnel.

If he had to fight in here, he could. It’d be cramped and he’d have to be mindful, but Tatsuo was already thinking of the worst possible circumstance that could happen down here. The tunnel collapsed and he was immediately killed or maybe worse. Actually, was there worse? Probably not. Other options included never finding any sort of exit to this tunnel or never finding some sort of sustenance to survive off of. The situation was dire and the more he thought on it, the worse it became. Tatsuo pushed those thoughts from his mind, concentrated on continuing on down the tunnel while clicking and coughing away to better hammer his new skill home.

S-rank Taijutsu Discipline/Stance 1274/1200

Comfortable with his newly learnt Echolocation, Tatsuo began to explore another option of his. Most people had five senses but those attuned to chakra could learn to open their sixth sense, the ability to sense chakra. Tatsuo was one of those and had the basics down, but they required him to sit still and concentrate. Right now, he needed a version he could count on while moving and by combining it with his Echolocation, it would be like he hadn’t lost his sight in the first place.

Tatsuo stopped in his tracks and opened his Senses, his Mind’s Eye projecting no chakra in his immediate area of the tunnel. His first step was to open his eyes without losing his concentration and immediately he failed. The second Tatsuo’s eyes opened up he lost the feeling of his Sensory extending. Steeling himself with a deep breath, Tatsuo closed his eyes again and opened his Senses once again. He cycled deep breaths through himself as he calmed his heart and mind before opening his eyes and finding it did not work. He knew he wasn’t the best sensor but he also knew ninjutsu wasn’t his worst area of expertise. He could get this, he just had to try a bit harder.

He repeated the steps, closing his eyes and opening his Senses. Tatsuo breathed deep again and held it before releasing it. He pressed his sensory range farther, still nothing came within range. It truly seemed that nothing else was down here with him at the moment. The Bannin was glad nothing had happened so far but he also knew his own luck. Something WOULD, eventually.

Finally Tatsuo opened his eyes and found he could maintain his Sensory but that his range was greatly dulled compared to normal. Focusing on the jutsu, Tatsuo began to supply it with more chakra as he finely tuned its range into something more useful. The mere ten meters he was sensing at the moment with his eyes opened was puny and he knew it. Slowly the range grew. At first it went from ten meters to twelve meters. Then it went from twelve meters to sixteen meters and Tatsuo could feel his control faltering over the jutsu. Gathering himself and his concentration, he took a breath before continuing to increase the range at which he could sense with his eyes opened.

Sixteen meters grew into twenty meters and after that to twenty five meters. Tatsuo’s maximum range for the moment wasn’t bad but he still had to test if he could move and fight while maintaining the concentration. Believing in himself and that he could do this, Tatsuo began to walk forward while maintaining the Sensory jutsu at its current max range of twenty five meters. He could feel his concentration wavering before he brought it back under his control. Sensory jutsu were more above finesse and control than brute force and destruction. One set of those Tatsuo knew very intimately but the other…this was a moment that didn’t come around often.

Slowly but surely Tatsuo found himself extending both the range of the jutsu and his ability to move and fight with it. By the time he was done, he had discovered he could perform normally and the maximum range he had extended it to were a whopping fifty meters.

555/520 B-rank Sensory Ninjutsu

And then something happened that he wasn’t expecting. Chakra was coming into his range and Tatsuo was both perplexed and excited. It was moving fast and didn’t seem keen on stopping, rather it was aimed right AT him. Moving quick, Tatsuo began to run down the tunnel while using his combined Echolocation and newly trained Sensory jutsu to monitor where each spike of earth was aiming for and be two steps ahead of them to avoid impalement.

Great, it wanted to fight. This tunnel wasn’t very conducive to such activities, especially with the fact whatever was attacking was using Doton or some variant. Deciding to no longer mess around with his running Speed, Tatsuo increased it to the max as he continued down the tunnel hoping for some sort of wider, open area to fight in.

The Akari warrior would find that, even with his incredible speed, dodging those stalagmites would take every bit of focus and concentration; their speed was blinding. However, moving forward he'd get his wish, as the narrow tunnel began to open up more and more as he dodged the stalagmite assault, eventually revealing a cavern that, based on his echolocation, would seem to be around 20 meters in any direction. There were multiple columns of rock and stone holding up the ceiling, and jagged rocks jutting out of the walls, requiring that Tatsuo be careful if he decided to try walking along them. He wouldn't have much time to focus on that, as those stalagmites simply weren't stopping. Whenever he touched one location, the ground beneath him would begin to erupt again, preventing him from standing in one spot for longer then a moment. Eventually, after a few moments of this game of dodge-spike, a voice resounded through the cavern.

"You who has stumbled into my realm... Name yourself!" As the voice rang out, Tatsuo would sense a great presence of chakra that slowly began to take form about 15 meters to his left, and his echolocation would no doubt tell him that this chakra presence was inside of the walls of the cavern. The sudden eruption of spikes would stop for a moment, granting Tatsuo the chance to speak without playing 'the floor is lava'.

Tatsuo continued his mad dash down the blackened tunnel as he relied on a triple combination of his Tremorsense, Echolocation, and Sensory to avoid the rapidly attacking his spikes. He dodged just enough for each of the spikes to miss him without having to expend extra movement or energy, he knew it would spell his end if he was caught and/or injured by one of the offending spikes.

Finally his Echolocation reveald to him an exit to this damned tunnel. Reaching the exit, Tatsuo found himself in a chamber. It was decently spacious and was littered with rock formations connecting the floor and ceiling as well as movement hindering spikes jutting from the wall. His new location did not stop the spikes from attempting to impale him from below either.

Tatsuo continued to dodge as he watched each spike of chakra form with his Sensory to predict where they would break through the Earth. Soon the spikes stopped and chakra began to fill not just the spikes but the walls of the room. A denser concentration was forming on his left as a voice rang out.

Tatsuo listened carefully before deciding to respond to the disembodied voice belonging to the chakra in the walls.

"My name is Tatsuo... I didn't exactly plan to or mean to get trapped down here or intrude. If you'd be so kind as to show me to the surface I'll be out of your hair and you'll never have to deal with me again." Tatsuo decided to try diplomacy and playing nice, it was his best option at the moment. He could see just how he had the disadvantage if this turned into a fight and he was just slightly praying that whatever was messing with him wouldn't be bloodthirsty. He was willing to leave and move on, it all rested on just how this particular Spirit was feeling in the moment.

~[Perfect Balance]
D-Ranked Discipline Taijutsu
Type: Melashiin, Temershiin, Phasmashiin, Eroshiin, and Lacrishiin.
Due to training with their shiin, Akari members are much more at balance than those without a shiin. This holds especially true for those with temershiin, as the tail-like protrusion provides a counterbalance. This also allows for clan members to use their shiin as legs for balance, if able.

[Quiet Steps]
D-ranked Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Stealth] Concentration
The user has learned to move silently, and does not produce any sound when walking. They cannot be heard unless a person listening for them has a specialized hearing technique.

[Incoming]
C-ranked Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Perception] Concentration
The user has attuned their hearing to subconsciously listen for the sound of things moving through the air and alert them when picked up. This allows them to hear and become alert of projectiles flying at them from a general location, even if they can’t see them. This technique does not work in enclosed areas where sounds can be distorted.

[Trained Nose]
B-Ranked Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Perception] Concentration
Over time Tatsuo has developed a keen nose. He can pick up on faint scents that average shinobi wouldn’t even notice to the point where he can distinguish the individual body scents of people as well as determine specific species of animals even by just a strand of hair. The passive range of this ability is about 30 meters though if he has picked up on a trail he can continue to follow it to its source assuming there are still scent particles in the air or physical remnants of a trail.

[Trained Ears]
B-Ranked Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Perception] Concentration
Tatsuo’s sharp senses allow him to pick up on slight sounds within a 50 meter radius of himself. This can range from the sound of a weapon being drawn, a projectile in flight or subtle footsteps and sounds of light breathing. In terms of eavesdropping he can discern a conversation at such a range as if he were standing next to the person whom is speaking.

[Awareness]
B-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Perception] Concentration
The user has learned to pay attention to their opponent's minuscule movements preceding an action and other things in the midst of a fight. The longer the fight goes on, the more details about the opponent will become noticed by the user. The user can only notice and follow those with a Taijutsu equal to or lesser than their own.

[Silent Steps]
B-ranked Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Stealth] Concentration
The user has trained to stay silent when moving at their full speed unless the foe has a jutsu to hone their sense of hearing. If the user sticks to walking rather than running, they won’t be able to be heard regardless of the foe possessing advanced hearing techniques.

[Close Quarters]
B-rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisites: Upper Body, Shiin Usage
When in enclosed areas, the user may find themselves with limited space and find it difficult to get the full force out of their attack. No matter the angle, the user who practiced this discipline will be able to get full strength from their attacks even if they can't extend them fully.

[Recognition]
B-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
Humans are being of habits and patterns, this is no exception in combat, ranging from taijutsu to hand seals. Patterns already being easier to remember, the user has worked hard at actively committing whatever he sees to his short-term memory. This allows him to remember things such as the beginning wind up to a strike or a hand seal pattern after seeing it once, so that he can recognize the technique if used later in a battle. This gives him an advantage in anticipating his opponents next action and makes an opponent’s consecutive usage of a technique a liability.

[Titan’s Strength]
B-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: 30 Strength
The user has trained their body and as such can use their oversized weapon with such ease that the usual encumbrance of such large weapons is as if nothing to them. This allows the user to use their weapon with the same speed and control as a smaller, more easily controlled weapon, such as a ninjato or katana. The benefits of this are incredibly useful, as this allows them to attack with incredible speed and accuracy without sacrificing their power, as well as block efficiently between blows.

[Tremorsense]
A-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Tatsuo is sensitive to vibrations in the ground and can automatically pinpoint the location of anything that is in contact with the ground within a 10-meter radius. While underwater, Tatsuo can still use his tremorsense by backtracking the vibrations that carry in water.

[Titan’s Grip]
A-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: 35 Strength
The user has become so adept at using his heavy phasmashiin that he can do so one handed with no penalty. The user can perform any Shiin Usage taijutsu of A rank or lower single handedly, and can maneuver their shiin fluidly and accurately with only one hand. This has the added benefit of freeing up their other hand, allowing them to use their other hand for a variety of purposes while maintaining an offensive advance.

[Feel No Pain]
A Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: 35 Stamina, 35 Strength
A user with this technique has trained themselves to ignore even the most painful of wounds. This isn't to say that the damage of the wound is ignored; a grievous wound will still cause damage to the user's body and could inhibit their abilities or kill them outright. This discipline simply allows the user to treat pain as if it doesn't exist through shear force of body and will, allowing them to charge straight through attacks and jutsu to deliver their onslaught of attacks.

[Spatial Awareness]
A-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Perception] Concentration
The user has undergone years of training their hearing to levels that are beyond human. The user is able to pick up and detect the faintest of whispers, the softest of noises, and even those with lower ranked [Stealth] techniques. This jutsu will not pick up foes with a [Stealth] technique equal to or exceeding its rank.

[Vacuum Steps]
A-ranked Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Stealth] Concentration
The user has mastered producing no noise while utilizing their full speed. While either running or walking the user is unable to be heard by foes whether using an enhanced hearing technique or not.

[Flicker Proficiency]
A-rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Perception] Concentration, 30 Instinct, *[Ninjutsu • Body Flicker Technique]
The user has become accustomed to and is no longer affected by the lag of the *[Ninjutsu • Body Flicker Technique] through repeated usage and practice of the jutsu. After performing the jutsu the user is able to instantly attack or defend rather than suffer the momentary lag accompanying those not acclimated to the jutsu.

[Instant Acceleration]
A-rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: 50 Strength
The user has trained their body to utilize their full speed without any build up or using any excess energy. This allows the user to use their max speed while operating in the midst of a fight or even from a dead stop.

[Lie Detector]
A-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite: [Perception] concentration, [Trained Nose], [Trained Ears]
By using his enhanced senses of smell and hearing, Tatsuo is able to act as a type of natural lie detector by detecting the faint change in a person's heartbeat and scent due to perspiration when a lie is told. This is rendered ineffective against those who have an A-Rank or higher technique to fool Tatsuo's senses, or those who do not have a heart beat or sweat glands (i.e. Elemental Body).

[Watching Closely]
S-Rank Discipline Taijutsu
Prerequisite: [Perception] concentration, 39 Instinct
Possessing immense instinct and perception, Tatsuo is aware of even the most subtle details around him, to a point where he can even pick up on the slightest tension changes in an opponent’s body allowing him predict their movement before it is complete or even read what someone is writing by the way their pencil moves. At times his eyes seem to move on their own will, rapidly tracking an amount of movements equal to his [Instinct]/2.

[Echolocation]
S-rank Taijutsu Discipline
The user has learned how to utilize sound to provide them with a form of a site. Mimicking the Echolocation of animals such as a bats and dolphins, the user has learned how to use coughs, clicks, and other noises they produce to 'see.' Each time the user makes a noise, it travels 500 meters and provides them with a mental 3D image of the surrounding area. They can detail size, shape, surface features, and density but cannot details such things as color.

[Sensory Style • Broad Sense Mobile]
B-Rank Ninjutsu
Prerequisites: *[Sensory Style • Beyond Senses], Control/Instinct stats of 25
This jutsu is an extension of [Beyond Senses]. With this jutsu initiated, a sensor can focus on individual chakra signatures to get a precise idea of where their opponents are at up to 25 meters and a general sense of the direction and number of chakra sources can be determined at about 50 meters. This jutsu is designed for on the move and combat, allowing the user to see, move, fight, etc while maintaining it for [Control]/2 posts.

The entity of chakra grumbled and groaned as Tatsuo attempted to be diplomatic about the situation... "Hmmmmmnooo I don't think that's going to happen. You shinobi and your deception are why I reside here in the first place... If you've come to my realm it's because you want whats mine, or you want to enslave me with your horrid arts. I'll bury you before that happens!" As it finished speaking, Tatsuo would sense the body of chakra burst forth from the rock wall, and as soon as it did the noise reverberating around him would tell him that this 'spirit' was actually in the form of hundreds upon hundreds of smaller shards of rock and stone... a 'swarm' of earth, as it were.

And it was coming right for him at breakneck speeds, clearly intending on shredding the Akari warrior to pieces if he didn't have some plan of action to combat the oncoming spirit of earth and stone.

The chakra in the walls did not even fkinch at his offer to leave peacefully. The spirit was stalwart in its decision to attack. For Tatsuo, that was enough. He had given it a chance to stand down, escape with its life. The Akari Bannin was glad he had pre inflated his lacrishiin and melashiin as the chakra in the wall decided talking was over.

"Really wasn't here for either of those reasons but fine! Bring it on!" Tatsuo snarled with spittle flying from his lips as his twelve mleashiin tentacles shifted into defensive positions around him and he shifted into a stance more suited for close combat. They actively whipped back-and-forth as stones began their flight at him, the tentacles picking up speed to the point where they became a whipping defensive whirlwind that aimed to bat down or away every stone coming his way. While his Echolocation and Sensory served well at tracking the shards his melashiin and lacrishiin served well to prevent a majority of the damage from landing, several of the shards were able to slip through the gaps between the tentacles only to be met with his actual fists striking and destroying the stragglers.

Tatsuo waited patiently as he continued to strike back st the deflect the incoming stones. Eventually one of them would tire; either it would run out of chakra or he'd be worn down over however many days it would take to lose all of his energy. For now it was a battle of attrition.

Tatsuo would find that by destroying each and every little stone thrown out by the spiritual creature, he'd succeed in protecting himself from the stones. At best, a few of the smaller shards might have scratched his armor, but nothing significant enough to warrant concern. As the barrage slowed down and the amount of shards of earth dwindled, Tatsuo would noticed that a particularly large chunk of earth did not fly forward; instead it retreated into a nearby column of earth. His sensory jutsu would also indicate that the particular chunk was also the source of the creature's chakra.

It didn't take a brain surgeon to deduce that this stone spirit had a core of some kind; it was akin to an elemental body.

But as the stony core maneuvered through the column into the ground below, shards of rock still bombarding Tatsuo at a slow but steady rate, the ground beneath Tatsuo would once more begin to glow with the same chakra as before, signifying that more pillars of rock were coming to try and impale the Akari warrior. "Why should I believe you!? Why should any spirit believe that a shinobi would wish them no harm? Do you forget the past so easily?" Clearly the spirit was old enough to remember the time of the Genma's rule, when spirits roamed freely while humanity was kept under the yoke. To be so ancient and so powerful, only to lurk beneath the earth nowadays, a shell of it's former glory... It was no wonder the spirit harbored such resentment.

The barrage of shards would have finally stopped as the last few flew out towards Tatsuo, but now he had the spikes to worry about again. The source of the spirit's power rested underground about 10 meters, no doubt within Tatsuo's reach. But the shinobi would still have to exercise caution. After all, this was the spirit's domain, and who knows what might happen to the caverns if he used such force to destroy the spirit underneath the earth.

Tatsuo wasn't willing to sit still and let this stony bastard attack him freely and without punishment. As the barrage rained down on him, he began to move forward at a steady gait that wasn't quite a run but definitely not a walk. He homed in on the direction of the core and the column it was beginning to merge and sink into as the hail of stone began to lessen.

Before it could disappear into the ground and away from him, Tatsuo commanded two of his Melashiin to shoot forward to their max length at top speed and strike above and below the cores location in the column, leaving it free falling and unconnected to the earth.

He shot forward from his position in the dark before the column piece could touch the floor and attempted to drill a punch into it dead center to shatter the core to pieces.

There was a resounding crack as Tatsuo's punch cleared through the core. The spirit within burst forth with an ear piercing screech from the remnants of the core. Fading away as it was drawn back to the spirit realm, it's tether no longer able to hold it in this plane of existence. The Spirit produced a ominous cackle. "If this is the level of your power, you will find only death here little shinobi. I won't forget this! We spirits have a long memory." The remnants of the stone looking spirit finally faded leaving only the echo of it's cackle behind.

The floor of the cavern began to rumble and shift. All the jagged edges began to become smooth leaving the vast opening in the cavern looking very different than it had prior. With the death of the spirit inhabiting this place it seemed the cavern had changed. This was not to say the entire cavern had become smooth, the stalagmites and stalactites that remained were much smaller in comparison and a lot less likely to impale you. Around the edges of the cavern the rock seemed to take on a stepped appearance, each cliff leading up to a large plateau that backed up onto another cliff. If they were steps they were stairs for a giant. In the centre of the cave a pile of rubble had collected from where the cave had collapsed bringing the bannin down here prior.

On the northern face of the cavern a tunnel led upwards, bird song could be heard emanating from within. A faint smell of cedar and fresh grass wafted downwards from this tunnel. A warmth also flowed down through the tunnel, it was a pleasant to the senses like a fine summer's day. On the southern end a tunnel seemed to descend further down a faint blue glow pulsating from below. From the entrance it would be easy to feel the damp in the air below, a musty smell followed behind the feeling A small beam of light shone from a crack above providing a very dim light in the cavern. A small body of water had collected near the rubble, running down from somewhere above it was only a puddle at present. Given time the puddle would likely form an underground spring, the water seemed fresh. The cave was filled with the kind of ambient noise you could come to expect out of an underground cavern.

"You stupid pile of rocks, don't make me follow you into that shitty spirit realm and kick your ass again." Tatsuo taunted the fading spirit as the lack of its chakra transform the cavern back into its natural formation. His echolocation bounced off the walls as it developed a picture of the newly transformed area.

He really wasn't surprised by this seemingly giant steps surrounding him. At least something lead upwards and he could figure it out from there. The tunnel leading upwards seemed safe but safe wad dangerous as far as he was concerned at the moment. The pleasant smells may not have caused others for alarm but one of Tatsuo's teammates was one of the most adept users of genjutsu in the village. Strange smells were a frequent genjutsu trigger and that was enough for him to scoff at the path.

If it looked too good to be true, it usually was.

Tatsuo drank his fill of the collected water in the dim light of the cavern before stepping towards and down the damp and musty tunnel past its glow.

While the glow seemed less pronounced it left a faint blue hue to the air around Tatsuo. The musty smell only growing stronger as he delved further in. The tunnel began to open wide, the sight before Tatsuo was not all that common. Large mushrooms as tall as trees made a great fungal forest ahead of him. A winding path of stone led through the open space to the other side. It split in several directions however, from the elevated position Tatsuo was on he could see they all led to the same place. A large triangular opening up a large set of stone steps, the forest of fungi seemed to stretch on for quite a distance between where he stood and the opening. Just from eyeballing the distance it would be easy to tell it would be a day's walk.

Each of the tree like mushrooms that spread through out the large open space held a faint blue glow about them. Originating from beneath the mushroom cap where the gills resided. Blue glowing spores rose up from the cavern covering the air above in thousands upon thousands of spores. A large clearing opened up in the canopy of fungus, revealing a lake of bright blue water. In the centre of the lake was a small island where a odd silhouette sat at the water's edge.

To the left and right most walls of this cave structure were a series of shelf like rock formations. Some kind of avian creatures had made these places their home, a few circled above the forest. Occasionally one would dive and rise back up with some rodent like creature in it's grasp. From this distance it was hard to make out details of the creatures, their exact size and features. They seemed to be purple in colour a very subtle slight contrast to the blue backdrop of the cave.

Tatsuo wasn't sure if what he ran into while descending was worse or better than what awaited him if he had decided to ascend. A giant mushroom forest that softly illuminated the area with a blue glow stood in front of him. He had seen the bioluminescent mushrooms before in the many tunnels littering the catacombs but never seen any as big as these. This was probably the origin point for the others and didn't doubt the animals had been instrumental in helping it spread.

His Echolocation and Sensory jutsu weren't as needed here due to the soft blue glow put off by the mushrooms but he felt safer keeping them active, at least for the moment. He clicked his tongue and waited for any feedback from the rebounding sound waves or his Sensory jutsu before continuing on. Once satisfied, he turned off the Sensory jutsu and channel chakra to his feet before climbing the wall to his right. He didn't want to risk any adverse effects of the mushroom spores and decided to climb the shelf like rock formations to the top where he began to travel along it to the other side of the cavern towards the triangular exit.

The climb round was not all that challenging it gave Tatsuo a clearer view of the forest from alternative angles also. It seemed a thriving ecosystem had developed down here, all manner of creatures seemed to call the forest their home. A pair of white fur foxes danced between the trunk like sections of the mushrooms. A pair of lines ran down their fur from the top of their eyes up and over the ears, over the back and finally merging at the tail. The lines had the same blue glow as the mushroom forest.

The most odd sight was a small hamlet in a little clearing of the forest. Houses made of stone with thatch roofing made from the teal grass that had sprouted along the forest floor. The villagers themselves were a stranger sight still, they were three foot tall with mushroom caps attached to the top of their heads. Their skin was a mushroom fleshy colour, they moved about their business without a care in the world and seemed to be quite peaceful from casual observation.

As Tatsuo would begin to move closer towards the rock shelves, he would begin to notice that the avian creatures were drawing their circling closer to him. They were becoming more curious of the Bannin yet maintain a cautious distance. Along the shelf formations the birds had made a series of nests, many were flying to and fro to feed their young. Now that the creatures were coming closer they seemed to be the size of a small dog, their feathers were interspersed with a scaly hide. Their beaks had a serrated edge to them, the talons were like the blades of scythes.

If Tatsuo got any closer to the nests five of the bird creatures would dive in his direction, their talons stretched out in an attempt to knock him from the wall. They would not take their turns either, swarm tactics seemed to be how they intended to come at him. They otherwise seemed disinterested in him as long as he stayed away from their nesting area all along this cave wall.

[Plotboard] The First of Three

Nope.

The single thought that ran through his head at the site of another colony of... beings down here besides the spirits. The last thing he wanted was even more dead or injured combatants on either side of the equation. He would continue to pretend they didn't exist unless they made themselves a threat.

Then it was game on.

Tatsuo navigated the rock shelves in such a way to maximize his distance from the nests but maintained a steady pace to the other side. The birds were circling now and obviously anxious because of his actions. The Bannin moved along the wall hoping he wouldn't have to harm them.

Yeah, okay.

The swarm of birds began to dive him as he progressed closer to the nests. He quickly went through a series of seals before withdrawing a shuriken from his weapons pouch and firing it forward and up. The single shuriken turned into a cloud of razor sharp death that worked its way through the flock and fell into a section of the forest away from the settlement. Once the swarm was taken care of, he continued his trek to the other side.

The user will perform the needed hand seals and then take hold of a shuriken. The user will throw the shuriken where it will rapidly duplicate until it forms a densely packed 15-meter diameter cloud of shuriken, made completely of Kouton. The swarm of projectiles will propel forward from the origin shuriken at a speed of 20 and strength of 20.

Some of the birds exploded in a bloody mess as the shuriken rained down on them. Tatsuo would be able to walk on unhindered. Eventually he would come to the cave exit at the other side of the mushroom cave. Once entering a long tunnel was all that awaited Tatsuo. At the other end of this tunnel Iwagakure waited.

Tatsuo continued his dash sprint across the cave wall unhindered by anything else. Once he had made it to the other side and through the exit, it had been a long hallway. He continued down it at full speed while using his Echolocation as a means of early warning system if anything tried to attack along with his previously trained Sensory jutsu. Eventually the hallway opened up into the bottom of a very familiar location.

The ravine dug out by the Leviathan worm.

A grin spread across Tatsuo's face as he raced up the rock wall towards the Boneyard and its rodent inhabitants. Nothing dared attack him at the speed he moved and energy he put off. Soon the cliff that led to the forward operating base was the only thing left in front of him. He shot up it like a rocket, triumphant with his First Trial.
