Shou was weary from his travels and a smile swept cross his dust covered face as he saw the riverside village ahead, behind which loomed large mountains. He'd been traveling for quite some time living off the land, namely wild lizards and tough plant roots that were rather questionable. He was excited to see a village ahead and planned to spend at least one night on an actual bed. Traveling all the way from Whirlpool Country to Rock was no small feat. He'd heard tale that Whirlpool had been liberated but he had no desire to turn back. The only thing that had made it home was long since gone.

The young Martial Artist increased his stride and started into a steady run. He was eager to have a plate of edible food for a change. As he neared the village he saw many boats and a pier along the river. Looked like fish was likely to be on the menu tonight. Taking a deep breath he smelled a fishy scent that seemed to permeate the entire village confirming his conclusions of it being a fishing town. He noticed a large number of trading post as well as a large smithy towards the north of the village. He noticed the villagers gossiping as he passed but didnt pay it too much mind.

He kept his eyes peeled for a tavern or inn and finally found what looked to be small bar. Close enough he decided as he stepped in. The fishy smell continued even inside the bar mixing with the scent of ale. He dropped his pack at his feat by the bar and waited for the bartender to approach. He ordered an ale and the house special though he wasn't quite sure what it was he knew it had to be better than bitter roots. He slid the payment on the table, the money from bets he placed in the various fighting pits he'd encountered. He took in his surroundings as he finally began to relax.

Asking around he learned the village was well off situated between the plains and the deeper parts of the mountains, garnering trade from both. If anything it explained the large smithy he'd seen as he hadn't been able to figure out why they'd need such a large one for a simple fisherman's village. Shou's food arrived and he ate slowly savoring the flavor of true meal.

"Another round for my new friends!"

Boisterous cheers erupted from a table near the bar as a waitress scurried off to fulfill the order, and a few men patted the shoulders of the man who had shouted it. Their words were mostly lost in the din of the crowd, but Komiya Shizuo spoke back nonetheless. His beer-laden response was met with even more cheers and he slammed his empty mug several time onto the table, prompting some of the men to quiet down. "Thanks you all for'yer wonderful stories!" he told them, his words only slightly slurred. Shizuo grinned at each one of them, pointing a slender finger at a beefy man with a wide nose flushed red by drink. "'Specially you, Izo, but I wasn't ss'pecting sucha scary story!" The one called Izo laughed, emphasizing what he had already said: his story was absolutely true and was absolutely not embellished by beer and ale.

Shizuo believed him, for the most part. Izo had started the story fully sober before they had arrived in the bar. He seemed hesitant to tell the man what he had seen a few nights ago, so the Iwagakure shinobi knew the prospect of beer and food would loosen his tongue. Thankfully he got the story out of him before the alcohol clouded his mind and twisted the story, and he had invited strangers over to his table to dispel the somber mood and liven the place up.

"You oughta stay another night, Koten!" one of the more sober patrons shouted, using Shizuo's alias to address him. "Those pigs don't need no feedin' by you! Some'n else'll do it!" Shizuo feigned shock, sliding down in his chair and then quickly sitting back upright with an over-the-top guffaw. He gave an excuse that was apparently a real knee-slapper, but the truth was he had gotten all the information he needed. He would be staying the night, because the person he had been tracking for the past week and a half was most certainly in this town.

The boisterous group did not detract from Shou's enjoyment of his meal. Rather it only added to it. After all, months of traveling alone had left Shou starved for human interaction, even if he didn't actually trust anyone. He glanced out and over the other patrons observing what he could of them. Most of them seemed ro be a bit on the older side with a notable exception.

Not so much noticable in his youth but his pallor. The man reminded Shou of a fresh blanket of snow with his pale skin and white hair. His gaze lingered on him for a moment as he pondered curiously the man's origin. He then looked back to his own dark sun-kissed skin and wondered if the man was more used to being indoors or was just naturally pale.

Moving his gaze to their company they seemed a rather rag tag bunch gathered for an evening of drinks and companionship. Must be nice to be able to openly chat with people like that. As the waitress passed by again Shou would glance at her curiously. He was no stranger to women, merely not often having opportunities to interact with them made him rather socially inept. He swallowed down his desire to strike up a conversation and tore into his food with renewed vigor to appease his unrest.

Truthfully, even though Shizuo had gotten the information he needed, he wasn't quite ready to turn in for the night. He ordered yet another round much to the pleasure of the new villagers, but this time he didn't drink any of it himself. Instead, he looked around the bar, fixing his gaze on a young man who was sitting and eating alone. "You there! You look bored and thirsty!" Shizuo walked over to the loner, swaying a bit as he stepped down from his stool. He took his own drink and set it in down on the table.

The Iwa shinobi gave the guy a once over, nothing that he seemed to be around his own age. He would have blended in if he had been in Iwagakure. He was muscular and scars were visible on his bare skin, but other than that there was nothing particularly remarkable about him. Shizuo patted the young man on the back and with a friendly grin he asked, "Why dontcha join us? It's too good of a night t'be sittin' alone."

Clunk. Shou was halfway through his meal, as he'd been eating with gusto his face still flushed from having thoughts about the waitress, when a cup was set down on the table. Shou wiped his face and looked up spying the pale gentleman in front of him; giving him another once over as his natural distrust waged war against his desire to socialize and feel human again. Eventually, the base need of social interaction won against his cautious nature and he turned towards the group.

"Thanks for the invitation. Name's Shou. You seem to make friends fast." It was just a hunch but Shou had a feeling the pale gentleman wasn't from the area. He was the youngest in the group and the staff didnt seem to recognize him, though they were happy enough to take his money as he ordered round after round of drinks. Not that that meant anything this was a prime trading port. You had people from all over stopping in all the time. The pale man was probably just another stranger passing through.

He'd take a sip of his drink and stand up, moving to be with the others. His bare feet would scarcely make a sound as he set his bag down at his feet. He paused a moment and looking at his attire was actually some what embarrassed for a change. His clothes were incredibly travel worn and he looked like a dirty street beggar. Mind it wasnt too far from the truth as he usually lived self sufficiently. But he wasn't usually around other people to worry about it. To compensate he stood a bit straighter his shoulder widening and his bare chest puffing out a bit. "So what's everyone in town for business or pleasure?" It seemed like a harmless enough opening for conversation. Then again, Shou wasn't much of a conversationalist.

"They call me Koten here. And what can I say, drinks are a great way to befriend locals," Shizuo replied, his word choice giving the slightest, slightest hint that it might not have been his actual name. But there was no way Shou would know this, and the special jounin wouldn't give the guy time to really think about it. He ushered Shou towards the others with a wide sweeping gesture and followed behind.

The group collectively gave Shou a look over as he approached. "Scraggly, this one," one of the more burly patrons commented, stroking his wiry black beard. "Aye," said another man, this one short and blond, "but if we judged on appearances then we wouldnt'ave picked Koten as a man of means. Haven't been this drunk'n ages and I ain't spent a cent!" The group laughed at this, and then laughed harder at Shou's attempt to start a conversation.

"Don't mind them, they're a drink away from not knowing where they are. I can tell you they're all locals though, and they come here at the end of every week to unwind. Me, on the other hand, I'm here for business. I uh, trade and farm." It was almost a complete lie; he had never stepped foot on a farm in order to work and he knew almost nothing about being a merchant. But he couldn't exactly tell this kid that he was a shinobi who was working somewhat undercover in search of a group of vagrants who were transporting and selling illegal weapons. "What about you, Shou?" he asked, nodding at Shou's cup and urging him to drink.

When the men gave their opinions of him he took a deep drink and shook his head. Scraggly? Maybe clothing wise but he knew he was solid and could probably beat any of these men in an arm wrestling contest. The laughing at his awkward attempt at conversation only further cemented his poor view of them.

Koten however, proved himself once more to be of a different cloth. However only part of what he said was the truth. He was much too free with his coin to be a simple farmer. Plus his answer seemed half baked. But him being there for business seemed to ring true. What that business might've been Shou hadn't the foggiest.

"You could almost say I'm on a pilgrimage. Originally from Whirlpool Country when it was still overrun by thieves and bandits, i learned to fight to survive. I've traveled place to place seeking strength. The ultimate goal of course being to find a fabled village of ninja. Only they can truly make me strong ... Alas, it's probably nothing more than a fantasy."

He knew the old men would probably laugh at him again and took comfort in the knowledge that he could leave them all crippled for life if he felt the need. He doubted any of them would have the strength to stop him. They'd never lived or felt fear as he had. Never had to watch the life leave another's eyes as they strangled them to death to save their own hide... They could never understand.
