[PB] Heart of the cards

Water country is often described as a cruel cesspool for some of the most heartless people in the elemental nations, especially their ninja. It wasn't a hard image to stick onto the country of islands. Those who know of the caste system knew it was basically survival of the fittest with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. The country was not above trading human flesh and considering the large amount of ports was home to a considerable amount of pirates. Pirates that would harass other ships outside of Water country, plundering their wares and crew before returning to the misty islands to turn a profit.

But most pirates don't stay rich for too long. With ravenous greed they turned to gambling. Underground fight clubs, Casinos, sports betting, you name it. Weather it was legal or not, you could likely find your niche on one or more of the various islands. And from what his father, Mitsu, told him Koji was glad that they were going to one of the more legal and publicly known Casinos.

Yorokobi resort was located on one of the more northern islands of Water country. Built near the beach, the surrounding area was developed and modernized for their paying customers. It wasn't much, a few grand hotels that doubled as restaurants, attractions, and of course Casinos. It was the kind of place that spoke volumes about you if you could afford to stay there, even more if you could gamble.

It wasn't the kind of place you needed to bring ninja body guards. Because unless you were expecting trouble to follow you, there was little cause for violence at Yorokobi. Even as the boat pulled up to the pier, Koji couldn't shake the feeling that this client, a short balding man by the name of Komino, was just wasting resources to show his clout. But he was a shinobi, and shinobi completed their missions.

The pre-teen looked around for his temporary partner. It wasn't the longest boat ride, and he hadn't gotten around to introducing himself. Instead, he had chosen to keep to himself as he wondered what ever became of his last partner. Problem was, he wasn't seeing them, 'Well, I'll just stick to Komino. They're bound to show up sooner or later.'

If there was one thing that could be said about being a genin in the village of Kirigakure you could certainly say that it wasn’t boring. No ninja’s life could ever look that way, between training and missions there was always something to occupy your time and push you to get better. Even a mission like this, acting as a bodyguard, was still an opportunity to hone your skills and push forward. It was the core, the most central tenant of Kirigakure, that was driven into the ninja of the village when they were young. Chiaki knew from eavesdropping on her grandparents, opportunities for improvement everywhere, that other villages might have seen the style of Kirigakure too harsh and cold, yet it was that push to test yourselves against one another that ensured that only the best progressed, but in the harsh world of the ninja wasn’t that for the best? If the village let a weaker ninja through they were more likely to fail and end up hurting theselves and their teammates…or worse.

Still, the raven-haired girl peered over the edge of the pier, her blue eyes staring at the reflection staring back up at her, sometimes it wasn’t that easy. She could still see the bandit from her last mission, the way his head had been left, angled at an unnatural angle, his blank eyes staring unseeingly at her as he fell to the ground. She knew it was part of the same process, and he had been a bandit, intent on taking her life, but she just couldn’t get the sight of him dropping to the floor out of her head. That had been part of why she took this mission, she wanted to prove to herself that it wasn’t an impediment to her, that she could move past that stumbling block in her head. The girl blinked, the wake of a passing boat breaking the surface of her mirror as she glanced up at the dock, watching the ship pulling in as the passengers disembarked. It was easy to pick out her protectee…which meant that boy walking behind him would be her partner for the mission. Pushing away from the edge of the pier the girl slowly started a circuit around them, appearing to browse through the shops as her eyes flicked through the crowd, trying to spot anyone paying too much attention to Komino as she slowly circled closer and closer.

Koji continued to shadow his charge as his entourage came together. A lady on each arm, and a drink in hand, Komino sauntered around like he owned the place. There was another pair of men carrying all the bags, which just left the genin as security. Though he felt the task meaningless, he wasn’t about to let his charge die because he was too lazy or indifferent to do his job. With practiced ease, Koji allowed himself to fade into the crowd.

With his short stature, it was easy to slip between people, especially since most were drunk on the atmosphere and booze. Mostly booze though. Keeping his targets position in sight, he continued to shadow them while looking out for threats. For the most part it was clear, but there was a girl that stood out. At first he wasn’t sure if she was watching Komino, she seemed to be shopping and maybe it was the shrill laughter of one of the women that caught her curiosity. But after that, she continued to make her way towards them in a roundabout manner. As he continued to watch, he noticed that she was looking more towards the crowds, then towards his charge.

‘A ninja. Maybe she’s my partner for this one?’ She wasn’t anyone he recognized, but her pouches screamed ninja. Keeping himself ready for a fight, he took care to stay in her blind spot, before finally approaching her from the back left, “See anything?”

He didn’t hide his smirk. It was kind of a dick move to sneak up on another ninja, but he couldn’t resist. He hoped that didn’t sour their newly relationship, “Just to be sure, you’re here to keep him out of trouble, right? Last thing I’d want to do is have a fight in such a fancy place.” If the pre-teen sounded tough, it was because he needed to put on that kind of front. He trusted that she was there to help, but it never hurt to verify. Allowing his eyes to flicker back towards Komino, he made sure his presence wasn’t needed while he spoke with his fellow ninja.

If there was ever a time to be thankful for the legendary calm of the Aisu, an attitude that had been drilled into her from the time she could stand this was it. The voice at her back almost had the girl leaping out of her skin…almost. If she had been anyone else, then she might have jumped well above the crowd in shock. As this went Chiaki’s back stiffened blue eyes widening for a moment as for that fleeting second she seemed to freeze, turning into a statue for a moment, before she seemed to relax ever so slightly. Only slightly though, the girl’s entire body remained wound as she turned ever so slightly to the side, one hand instinctively dropping down to her side, pale digits playing with the flap of the pouch on her leg as she turned to look at the boy who had spoken.

It was only then, only after seeing the village crest on his headband, that Chiaki relaxed, the tension dropping out of her shoulders as she released the breath she didn’t even realise she’d been holding. “Oh well, you know, I’m sure that my parents would just love that vase there, or maybe a nice fan. If I don’t bring home some kind of souvenir I’m not sure they’ll let me back in the house after all.” Even as she spoke, her voice soft and conversational with a slight trace of amusement her eyes flicked past Koji to settle on Komino behind him, eyes flicking over the crowd around him as she withdrew her hand from her weapon’s pouch as she returned her gaze to the boy. “He didn’t give you too much of a problem on the way out did he?”

If she’d seen this scene from the outside, not knowing the context she might have found it funny. Two teens standing in the middle of a Casino town chatting to one another as if they didn’t have a care in the world while some of the roughest pirates and cruellest merchants she’d eve seen ambled around them. As it was the idea just brought the slightest ghost of a smile to her lips as she twisted back to the shop keeper, the glint of coins flowing between their hands as she bobbed her head in thanks, a paper and wood fan slipping into the sash tieshopkeeperr waist as she moved away from the shop keeper, one foot kicking off the ground to transform her turn into a small pirouette. “It doesn’t look like anyone is too interested in him, you know, as much as that can be said here when we’re dealing with someone who doesn’t fit in but has lots of cash to spend…” A wry smile pulled up Chiaki’s lips as she turned to face Koji. She could already feel a headache coming on as she thought about the potential problems. Sure she’d grown up around people with money, but they’d never flaunted it like this, she couldn’t see any of her family visiting a town like this unless it was on a mission. Still…she did get to see a new part of the work so it wasn’t all bad, was it? “It’s gonna be an interesting day isn’t it?”

Koji was just quick enough to see her stiffen before any trace of shock gave way to indifference. He didn't need to point out her bravado, nor show that he knew. Instead he simply shook his head and responded to her question, "Not really. He talks a lot to his girls. A real braggart that one, but doesn't strike me as too stupid." He allowed his gaze to go back to their target, "I think he really just wants the prestige."

Perhaps it was his youth that made him naive. A man of power, who had wealth to throw around on fancy resorts, escorts, and ninja bodyguards was probably well connected. And that brought its own dangers. Yet he doubted that there would be anything fantastical. At most beating up security guards who though his client a cheat.

It seemed that his partner was a little more streetwise, "Depends on how his luck holds out." He thought for a moment, before he stuck his hand out to the girl, "I'm Koji, your partner." After the introductions were done, he turned his attention back to their client, who was about to step up to one of the many bars for a drink, "If we're gonna be paraded around, the least we can do is be there, right? Our headbands should at least serve as a deterrent for any one trying to make a mark of our guy."

“At least it’ll keep the common thugs and thieves around here away from him,” the girl agreed as she turned ever so slightly, a small smile playing across her face as she settled one delicate hand in Koji’s, the slim white digits curling around his hand for a moment. “Chiaki,” she introduced herself with a small respectful bow of her head. “So, at least it doesn’t sound like he’s planning on actively getting himself into trouble, that’s something at least.”

The girl had heard stories from her family, her cousins gathering their younger cohorts together before regaling them with horror stories of missions past. It was meant to be a way to prepare them for future missions and trouble they might face when it was time for them to face the world, but it was the closest she'd ever come in her childhood to actually camping out with family and telling stories around a fire. The memories flicked across Chiaki’s mind for a second before she shook her head, dragging her mind back to the present. A rueful smile crossed her face as she reached up to adjust the headband wrapped around her forehead, to settle it better around her hair so the silver village seal shone in the light.

“Well, if we’re going to be show pieces, then I guess we should try to be the most decorative and terrifying showpieces we can be right? And the most deadly.” Although two teenagerd really weren't the kind of sight that snt grown men running for the hills in fear. For a moment an amused light danced in her eyes before she inclined her head. “After you then? Lets see what kinda mischief he wants to get himself into today.”
