Detailed knowledge of the human body's vulnerabilities and weaknesses are fundamental to learning Yoshin. This Discipline represents the practitioner's knowledge of the precise location of all major organs, tendons, blood vessels, and nerve clusters on both their body and the opponent's body. This allows the practitioner to accurately target those areas even in the heat of combat.
Much like any other day, Abari found himself studying. This time he was reviewing human anatomy. Sure, the boy knew Iijutsu already but it wouldn’t be much help if he didn’t remind himself of how the body actually worked. So the boy decided to quiz himself by setting up a dummy model of a human body and marking the major organs and arteries with his sword. That way it could double as sword practice. Drawing his sword and entering the Yoshin stance, Abari made his first stab towards where the heart of the dummy would be. It was best to start easy so he followed up with two cuts in the abdomen, marking the small and large intestine. Next was a series of stabs he used to mark the lungs and kidneys. Switching to arteries, he cut deep into the neck of the dummy, marking the carotid artery. Next he aimed to stab just below the clavicle, striking what would be the subclavian artery. Another two stabs were aimed at the heart, one towards the aortic arch and the other towards the coronary artery. This was followed by a deep cut on the inside of the bicep, marking the brachial artery as well as another at the wrist, marking the radial artery. Next he delivered a stab in the lower abdomen of the dummy, going for the iliac artery. Finally he dipped low and delivered a sweeping slash to the inside of the leg, cutting what would be the femoral artery. Abari didn’t need to stop and think for a second during this flurry of attacks. He’d been honing his Yoshin style for years to the point where his strikes were almost an unconscious action.

Taking a deep breath, the boy figured he should start cutting where the major nerves would be. It was a little bit awkward to do on a training dummy but he unleashed a flurry of strikes where he thought the nerves would be. He called out the targets in his head as he slashed the dummy. Radial, Median, Ulnar. Three slashes cut up and down the dummy's mock arms. Femoral, Peronel, Sciatic, Tibial. More slashes aimed at the lower back and mock legs cut the dummy. After he finsihed his barrage of cuts the boy decided to check his work. Walking ov1er and grabbing the textbook, he started to match up his cuts with the images. Perfect marks. Literally.

Exceptional Yoshin practitioners move beyond the basic knowledge of the body and delve more deeply into the study of the body. This Discipline represents the practitioner's knowledge of the precise location of all major and minor joints and tendons and all smaller nerve clusters on both their body and the opponent's body. This allows the practitioner to accurately target those areas even in the heat of combat.
Abari spent some time debating what would be a better way to keep his Yoshin skills sharp. He'd been using the style for years but rarely got a chance to use it in actual combat. You could only learn so much by practicing on training dummies. Finally, an idea popped into the boy's head. Wasting no time, he purchased some basic training armor and made small modifications to them. Each set now had a unique "weak point" that corresponded with major arteries and nerves. After making a few clones of himself, he had them don the armor. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it was a hell of a lot better than training dummies.

The boy started off slow, sending the first clone forward to begin attacking him. The boy dodged the first slash aimed at him and and blocked the second. After pushing the clone back, he quickly stabbed the gap in its armor. Poof. The armor fell to the ground. Wasting no time, the next clone attempted to catch Abari by surprise. The boy lifted his blade up just in time to block the incoming slash. After leaping backwards to create distance, Abari took a defensive stance. The clone charged towards him, lifting the sword for another attack, but it was just a feint. Instead the clone rolled to the side and tried to deliver a cut to Abari's legs. He was ready however and dodged the attack. As the clone tried to recover, the boy looped around, looking for the gap in the armor. Once identified, it was a simple matter to catch the clone off-guard. Poof.

The last clone decided not to take the offensive, instead opting to take a defensive stance. Abari delivered a quick slash aimed towards the eyes, knowing that it would be easy to dodge. The boy then brought the hilt of the sword to his chest and stabbed at the opening in the armor. Much to his surprise, the clone was able to dodge. Not letting up, Abari swept the clone's legs with a low kick. The clone rolled as its back hit the ground and cut upwards tried to counter attack but the boy intercepted the blade. Abari performed a feint, causing the clone to bring his guard upwards. In the same motion, he redirected the attack and landed a clean stab at the opponent’s “weak point”. Poof. This was much better than hitting training dummies, but the boy wasn’t satisfied quite yet.

Abari still wasn’t satisfied with his method of training. Surely there was something better he could be doing! Clones didn’t have any variation in their technique, and they were not quite as adaptable as he hoped. It was decent enough training, but not good enough for someone looking to master the blade. So it was time to go to an actual dojo. Thankfully, there was one in Kiri that welcomed him with open arms. It was not often that the boy went there to spar, but they were always happy to oblige. Much to the boy’s surprise, they lined up five sparring partners for him. According to the master of the dojo, he was free to go all out with the practice blade. It seemed they weren’t very concerned with injuries, which was perfect.

The first man bowed before drawing his practice blade and cautiously approaching Abari. They simply observed each other’s stance before his opponent made the first move. They were far too slow however. Abari managed to hit first, striking a nerve point directly and causing his sparring partner’s arm to seize up. There was no point in continuing the spar so Abari instead chose to provide the man some healing via Iijutsu. The next sparring partner stepped forward, hoping to do better than his peer. Abari took the offensive this time, delivering a couple slashes to get a feel for his new opponent. They blocked the first couple before Abari delivered a feint and redirected his strike to his opponent's wrist, striking the weakest part of the joint. Despite their best efforts, the second sparring partner dropped their sword and Abari brought his practice blade to their throat. After healing the wound, Abari called over the third sparring partner.

This woman rushed towards Abari, unleashing a barrage of attacks. He dodged them to the best of his ability but found himself backed into a corner. Switching to blocking the incoming attacks, he looked for an opening. Each time the boy tried to take the momentum of the fight from her, the woman found a way to continue her offense. Realizing that she wasn't going to run out of energy anytime soon, Abari changed strategy. It was a gamble, but the boy chose to instead move past the attack, barely managing it. He struck a nerve cluster in her spine and ended the fight quickly. After another Iijutsu, the fourth sparring partner approached.

The man eyed Abari, taking in every minute movement as they faced off. His opponent moved first with surprising speed. Abari intercepted the strike but before he could attempt a counter attack, a foot crashed into his chest, sending him backwards. Not giving him time to recover, the boy's opponent slashed downwards at him. Not given much of a choice, Abari brought his blade up to block the attack. Next, he delivered a kick aimed right between his opponent’s kneecap and shin, causing them to stumble backwards. By the time they hit the ground, Abari already had his blade poking the space in between their ribcage. A lethal blow. After providing more healing, he turned to face his final sparring partner.

Noticing that the man wasn’t going to take the offensive, Abari decided to make the first move. To his surprise, his opponent not only blocked, but parried his strike. The boy got ready for the counter attack, but it never came. This guy was playing it safe, but Abari had a few tricks up his sleeve. Some might have deemed it cheating as this was technically Yoshin training, but Abari ‘sheathed’ his training blade and let off a few Iaido strikes. Then, taking advantage of his opponent’s surprise, delivered a series of Yoshin strikes. Each hitting the weakest spot of joints in his opponent’s sword arm. After his opponent dropped their sword and Abari claimed his victory, he healed his final sparring partner. Satisfied with how well the training went, Abari turned to the master of the dojo and gave him a smile.

“So… Same time next week?”

The practitioner of Yoshin has attained a knowledge of the human body that rivals even the world's finest doctors. This Discipline represents the practitioner's knowledge of the human anatomy in its entirety, including every single point of vulnerability, and they are able to instantly locate and target those areas both on their bodies and their opponents' bodies whenever they so wish. This allows the practitioner to accurately strike even the most minute of target areas in the heat of combat.
Abari felt like he rarely ever got the chance to go on missions anymore. While he would never refuse a mission given to him, he made it clear that he’d prefer something with combat. Thankfully the council seemed to understand but there wasn’t often a combat oriented mission for one of his rank. So he was pleased to find that they found him a mission that was as simple as taking down some revolutionaries in Water Country. It was a perfect opportunity to test his Yoshin. There is no better practice than live combat, after all.

He would probably have received a lecture about efficiency if there were any superiors accompanying him on this mission. But the boy wanted to see if he could get them to all attack him at once. So he simply walked right into the building the revolutionaries were using as a base. Upon seeing the village headband he kept on his arm, the group immediately drew their weapons. They yelled for the others in the building as Abari unsheathed his blade. He studied the group as the remaining stragglers entered the room.

From the looks of it there were just under two dozen of them. A walk in the park for a shinobi of Kirigakure. Taking a deep breath, the shy boy that everyone in the village knew was pushed aside and the Bloody Demon of the Mist took center stage. Quickly picking his first victim, Abari charged forward. The man blocked Abari’s first attack but the boy redirected his second and severed a tendon in his opponent’s forearm. Before he could finish them off, he was interrupted by an attack from behind. Easily dodging the strike, the boy dropped low and cut the attacker’s femoral artery.

As the boy reset, he found himself surrounded by the enemy, all with their weapons drawn and ready. They were smart enough to not attack him one at a time, but unfortunately for them, nothing could prepare them for a shinobi of Kirigakure. Jumping over one of his attackers, he sent a downward slash as he landed, carving directly into their spine. One of the revolutionaries quickly spun around but Abari didn’t give him a chance to retaliate. Aiming a stab between the ribcage, the blade found its way into the man’s heart. The boy manipulated the impaled body to block an incoming slash. Pushing the limp body onto his attacker, he removed his sword and cut the eyes of an unsuspecting revolutionary.

Noticing their numbers dwindling in such a short amount of time, his opponents were finally starting to realize the position they were in. The boy quickly identified the weakest link in the group and made his way towards them. The fear had paralyzed them, making it all too easy to slip past their guard and cut deeply into their neck, severing their carotid artery. Much like a cornered animal, the others were sent into a panicked rage and once again attacked the boy. Abari parried two strikes aimed at him and severed the axillary artery of one attacker before slashing at the median nerve of the other. The pain caused them to drop their sword and Abari used that opening for a quick slash to the stomach.

Beckoning the rest of his opponents to charge, Abari dodged their strikes, one by one until he found an opening. One poor soul found Abari’s blade buried in their tibiofemoral joint. As they fell to the ground, screaming in pain, the boy rolled behind another enemy and delivered a wide slash that severed both of their achilles tendons. The revolutionaries would find half of their fighting force already either incapacitated or dead. Abari would not give them much of a chance to process it however, charging back in to begin another offensive.

Abari found his next target and delivered a feint and when the man brought his sword up to block, the boy dug his blade into their elbow joint. After removing his sword, he quickly changed targets, delivering a few quick strikes which, to his surprise, were blocked. It seemed that not all of them were worthless. He could not continue to fight this particular opponent for the moment however, as another revolutionary tried to ambush Abari from behind. Dodging at the last second, the boy used the opening made by the missed attack to use his sword to damage their brachial plexus directly. The boy followed this up with a slash across the neck before quickly resetting.

Leaving the skilled swordsman for later, Abari threw one of his enemies directly into them. As the two tried to catch their balance, the boy delivered a barrage to two of the remaining revolutionaries. Cowering, they tried their best to block the shinobi’s attacks but instead found their defenses overwhelmed. Abari cut at their interphalangeal joints, destroying their fingers before giving them a relatively quick death. One of the revolutionaries attempted to flee the building but Abari chased them down and stabbed at the back of their spine, severing two of their thoracic vertebrae.

With just five combat capable enemies left, Abari stood between them and the only exit. They all attacked at once, leaving Abari no chance but to dodge. The skilled swordsman made it difficult however so he again put another revolutionary between him and them. Eager to get the weaklings out of the way, Abari delivered another barrage of slashes, carving into major arteries. After three more bodies hit the floor, he impaled the remaining weakling in the stomach, twisting his blade before kicking the body off.

Now that it was just Abari and the skilled swordsman left, he could finally enjoy himself. With a devilish grin, he sent a few slashes towards his enemy. Again, they were parried but the boy would not let up. Pushing his opponent back with each attack, Abari backed the man into a corner. Their arms were shaking from the effort, it was not easy trying to keep up with a shinobi. With surgical precision, the boy redirected his attacks. The man’s weakened arms could not stop the boy’s blade in time as it carved into his arms. Each strike cut nerves and joints until both of the man’s arms were completely useless. After the deed was done, Abari let out a sigh. His skills with the blade were even sharper than he had hoped, not that his prey were particularly strong in the first place.

The Bloody Demon of the Mist made sure to finish off all the incapacitated enemies before continuing his mission. It was unlikely that all of the revolutionaries were in this building, but it had been a hell of a training session.

*[Yoshin • Glancing Arrow]
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Aiming to hinder the opponent's mobility, the practitioner launches a quick snapping slash or thrust at the side of one of the opponent's knees, damaging the tendon and causing the muscles in the joint to flare up. Aside from causing significant pain, an opponent hit by this technique will not be able to fully support their weight on the targeted leg, hindering their mobility and creating additional openings for the practitioner to exploit unless they have an Endurance equal to or higher than the practitioner's Speed.
As much as Abari had already trained in the ways of Yoshin, he had to acknowledge that his foundations were flawed. He originally just copied the moves written in an old book about Yoshin he found in his family's library. So despite already knowing some advanced techniques, he decided it was time to go back to the basics. Luckily, Abari was able to find a Yoshin trainer in Kiri.

"Glad to see that you acknowledge the importance of the basics. From what I've seen, you've got most of it covered. But you're missing a couple things. Let's start with a technique called the 'Glancing Arrow'."

His instructor demonstrated the attack. It was simple enough, just a strike to the side of the leg. The only trick was you needed to be accurate enough to damage the tendon directly. Abari slowly performed the technique, simply ensuring he understood the proper form. It didn't take long before the instructor confirmed that the boy had it down and was ready to pick up the pace.

The boy repeated the movements at full speed, stopping just short of his instructor's leg. The man seemed to have a lot of faith in Abari's blade control. After resetting and performing the technique a few more times, still stopping just short of the instructor’s leg, the man gave him a nod and called for them to move on to the actual thing.

“We’re going to do some light sparring with training blades. I want you to land this technique in the middle of combat as many times as you can manage.”

With that, they began, each swapping between offense and defense but ultimately not making any progress. After a few exchanges, Abari delivered a feint and dropped low, slamming his training blade into the instructor’s leg. Wasting no time, they reset and went back to exchanging strikes. With zero warning, the man picked up the pace and began to push Abari back. After finding an opening, the boy dodged and once again performed the Glancing Arrow technique.

Resetting one last time, they once again started to spar. Abari wasn’t going to let the instructor take the momentum this time however. After putting some pressure on the man, Abari baited out a wide swing, then, taking advantage of the opening, ducked low and struck his opponent’s leg. The training blade gave satisfying feedback as the boy’s instructor dropped to his knees. Whoops. Abari hadn’t quite meant to hit him that hard. Through gritted teeth, the man spoke once more.

“Not bad, kid, not bad at all.”

*[Yoshin • Burrowed Arrowhead]
D-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): *[Yoshin • Prey's Anatomy]
Looking to cause the opponent as much pain as possible with minimal energy or effort, the practitioner launches a quickly snapping thrust meant to slip through the ribcage and lightly cut the outside of one of the opponent's lungs. Aside from causing significant pain, an opponent hit by this technique will have difficulty breathing, causing future techniques they use to take up more Endurance due to oxygen deprivation.
“Here we go, this is the last of the foundational techniques for Yoshin. It’s called the Burrowed Arrowhead."

Abari watched closely as the instructor demonstrated on a training dummy. The technique required some accuracy, but otherwise was rather simple. The idea was to pierce between the ribcage, deep enough to lightly cut the enemy’s lungs. The attack wasn’t lethal, but it definitely would hinder the opponent’s ability to take in oxygen. Underhanded, but effective. Unfortunately he couldn’t really practice this technique with a training blade, so attacking a dummy would have to do.

The boy entered Yoshin stance and mimicked the movements of his instructor. The dummy was more detailed than the ones Abari was used to. This way he could actually tell whether or not he was actually striking between the ribcage. Once the boy felt he had the movements down, he set out striking the dummy. It was easy to aim attacks against a stationary opponent, so the boy wasn’t satisfied with the results. After performing the technique a few times, an idea came to mind.

Abari made three clones of himself, handing each of them a training blade. It wasn’t perfect, but this way he could do some live sparring without seriously hurting anybody.

"Oh… well that makes things a lot easier. Let's see your form!"

With that, the boy called over the first clone. Abari delivered a feint towards his doppelganger but to his surprise, they didn't take the bait. They tried to deliver a counter-attack but Abari was able to parry just in time. As the clone tried to regain a fighting stance, the boy delivered a thrust aimed towards his enemy’s right lung. Poof. Sending the second clone forward, Abari once again entered Yoshin stance. When the clone went to attack, the boy moved to intercept the blade. Not giving his opponent a chance to react, Abari followed up with an attack of his own. As expected, the clone brought their weapon up to block. Redirecting his attack, Abari delivered yet another thrust aimed between the ribs. Poof.

Abari called the last clone over, hoping that this one would put up more of a fight. The clone took the offensive, delivering multiple slashes, not giving Abari a chance to counter attack. The boy waited for his opponent to slip up, when he saw his moment, he attempted to parry their attack. But much to his surprise, it was a feint. Panicked, Abari realized he wouldn’t have time to block the redirected attack. Taking a gamble, the boy dodged just in time to drop low and perform the Burrowed Arrowhead one last time. Poof.

“Alright let’s move on. You’re picking these up really fast.”

*[Yoshin • Mercy Kill]
B-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
A unique attack in Yoshin, the practitioner strikes the opponent’s temple with their fist, elbow, or the pommel of their sword’s hilt. The nerve cluster in the temple being struck sends a jolt of intense pain through the opponent’s brain and body, causing severe disorientation, uncontrollable shaking, and severe blurring and distortion of the opponent’s vision. The opponent suffers a -3 penalty to their Endurance and a -3 penalty to their Speed for four posts as the brain must recover from the shock unless the opponent has a Rigid Structure technique of equal or higher rank than this technique.
“This is another simple one, just requires some good aim. Just take something blunt and hit your opponent in the temple. We like to call it Mercy Kill.”

With this technique having a lower risk of killing someone, the instructor decided to spar with the boy. Worst case scenario, Abari could always use Iijutsu to heal his opponent . As they both entered Yoshin stance, the boy waited for his opponent to strike. When the instructor took the offensive, Abari blocked the incoming attacks and waited for an opening. Eventually, the man swung a little too wide and the boy was able to parry the blade and throw his opponent off balance. Turning his sword around, Abari brought the pommel crashing into his instructor's temple.

After healing the man’s concussion, Abari reset and got ready for the next round of sparring. Deciding to take the offensive this round, the boy dashed forward and delivered a few strikes towards his instructor. They were expertly parried as Abari found himself losing balance. It seemed the man was going easy on him earlier. Happy to have a bit more of a challenge, the boy tried to come up with a plan as he was knocked off balance. The boy barely dodged the follow up attack by completely falling over and rolling backwards. Standing back up, Abari did not have much time to do anything other than block. In a display of exceptional skill, the boy redirected his opponent’s blade across his guard while slamming his elbow into their temple at the same time. After receiving some healing from his new student, the instructor stood up and spoke.

"I'm not going easy on you this time."

Abari felt a bit guilty for angering his teacher, but at the same time was excited to finally be taken seriously. It would be a fantastic learning opportunity. They both observed each other before taking any action. The man was the first to make a move, delivering a feint before redirecting the attack towards Abari’s legs. The boy was forced to jump to dodge the strike. Trying to take advantage of the opening presented, Abari brought his sword up to attack but his instructor rolled below him. With his back to his opponent, Abari panicked as the man attempted to strike once again. Barely able to duck below the attack in time, the boy spun around and delivered a wide hook straight to his teacher’s temple, knocking the man out cold. Whoops. Guess he could call that spar a success.

*[Yoshin • Rending the Joint]
B-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Useful both as a counterattack and as a technique on its own, the practitioner targets the weak point of a joint on their opponent’s body, such as under the shoulders through the armpit, into the elbow from the crook inside the arms, or behind the knees, and violently thrusts their sword through it, destroying the functioning tendons, muscles, and cartilage of the joint, potentially even ripping the affected bones from their sockets unless the opponent has a Rigid Structure technique of equal or higher rank than this technique. The damage caused by this technique is often permanent if the opponent does not seek highly skilled medical treatment.
"Next one is called Rending the Joint. It's exactly what it sounds like, it's a thrust towards the joints with the intention of tearing the tendons and muscles. That shit hurts, so you’ll have to use dummies and clones again.”

As his instructor demonstrated a few movements related to the technique, Abari mimicked them. He stabbed the detailed dummy in the crook inside the arms, under the shoulders through the armpit, and the backside of the knee. It wasn't something particularly easy to pull off in live combat but Abari was confident in his accuracy. He didn't spend years training for nothing! Making three clones again, the boy got ready for the real test.

Abari called the first clone over and entered Yoshin stance. The boy took the defensive as his clone delivered a series of slashes. Parrying the incoming attacks, the boy tried to get his opponent’s rhythm down. When he finally felt like he had it down, he moved in for a counter attack. With a final parry, the boy thrust his blade under the armpit of his clone. Poof. Unfortunately, the clones couldn't withstand an attack like that. But luckily the boy's instructor was able to act as judge for if the attack would have damaged the joints or not.

Calling the next clone over, Abari waited until they readied their blade before dashing towards them. The clone attempted to parry but instead found their blade knocked aside with each of the boy's slashes. When his clone eventually lost their balance, Abari delivered a feint aimed towards the legs, causing his clone to bring their blade down in an attempt to block. The boy redirected his attack and stabbed the clone on the inside of their elbow. Poof. The instructor raised his eyebrow.

"A bit of a gamble, but the accuracy of the attack can't be denied."

Calling the final clone over, the boy once again entered Yoshin stance. His clone delivered a few slashes toward Abari's upper body. The boy parried the strikes but fell for a feint by the clone. Caught off-guard, Abari barely managed to dodge but nearly fell over in the process. When the clone went to deliver a finishing blow, the boy purposefully dropped to the ground and rolled behind his opponent. Not wanting to waste the time turning around and risk a failed attack, the boy stabbed the back of his opponent’s knee without even looking. Poof. Luckily, it seemed his attack hit dead on the mark. Pleased with his performance, the boy gave his instructor a smile before getting ready for his next lesson.

[Yoshin • Bleed the Carcass]
B-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Useful as a counterattack or as an attack all on its own, the practitioner momentarily torques the muscles in their arms before unleashing a violent flurry of slashes and thrusts. Aiming for various major veins and arteries on the body, this technique can be difficult to completely defend against as it targets multiple vastly different areas of the opponent’s body in the span of a single attack. Even one of these attacks landing can penetrate deep into the opponent’s flesh, puncturing or ripping open a major artery or vein, quickly leading to life-threatening blood loss unless the opponent has a Rigid Structure technique of equal or higher rank than this technique. Multiple hits scored by this technique can cause an opponent to bleed out in a manner of minutes unless they seek immediate medical attention.
It had been almost a week since Abari started training with his Yoshin instructor. So far he was only really able to practice on training dummies and clones under the supervision of his teacher. Thankfully, they were able to find a sparring partner who not only had skill with the blade, but was willing to risk taking potentially fatal strikes. Anything for the advancement in their art, Abari supposed.

"This one is called Bleed the Carcass. It's a series of rapid attacks aimed at major veins and arteries. Ren over here is suicidal enough to let you practice, so let’s get started.”

The instructor demonstrated the movements for Bleed the Carcass knowing that Abari was quick to pick things up. When he was satisfied with the boy’s technique, he called for the spar to begin. Abari wasted no time in dashing forward and taking the offensive. To his credit, Ren expertly deflected the boy’s attacks. But he was only able to keep it up for a short while before Abari broke through his opponent’s guard and delivered a series of stabs and slashes. The attacks were made without mercy, cutting into the veins on the man’s arms and arteries in the chest and neck. As blood poured out of his sparring partner, Abari quickly tried to administer Iijutsu. Much to his surprise however, the man did it himself. Things made a bit more sense now.

Without skipping a beat, Ren stood back up and called for another round. Abari was happy to oblige and entered the Yoshin stance. Taking the offensive again, the boy once again put the pressure on his opponent. Ren realized that simply blocking wouldn’t work and started to parry. Abari let his opponent pick up on his rhythm to set up a feint. When Ren fell for his trap, the boy once again delivered a flurry of attacks aimed at veins and arteries.

Ren healed himself and readied himself for the next round. Abari entered Yoshin stance and waited for his opponent to attack. Ren was hesitant to take the offensive, but eventually aimed a few slashes towards Abari’s torso. Parrying the man’s attacks, the boy waited for an opening to present itself. Eventually, Ren swung too wide and Abari took advantage of it to knock them off balance. Blood flowed from his sparring partner’s body as the boy tore into arteries with his blade. Ren was surprisingly adept at healing himself despite having such severe injuries. Turning back to his instructor, Abari awaited the verdict.

“Alright these are clearly too easy for you, tomorrow we start the advanced stuff.”

*[Yoshin • Great Serpent's Constriction]
A Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): *[Yoshin • Field Dressing].
Using their intimate knowledge of the human anatomy to their advantage, the practitioner will attack an opponent on a seemingly innocuous part of their body, such as a pinpoint slash or thrust to the hand or the top of the thigh, aiming for a highly sensitive nerve point in that area of the opponent's body. The cut or slash itself does almost no damage to the opponent's flesh, but as the tip or edge of the blade makes contact, the practitioner will twist and put pressure on the nerve point, sending a violent shock through the opponent's body. Opponents with a Rigid Structure technique of equal or higher rank will be able to resist any adverse affects from this technique aside from the pain. Otherwise, the opponent is suddenly and immediately paralyzed, interrupting any action they were presently executing and instantaneously freezing their muscles. This paralysis lasts for three posts.
"Throughout our training, Abari, you have proven that you have the Great Serpent's Gaze. So now it's time to teach you how to use it. The first technique is called the Great Serpent's Constriction. It consists of hitting a nerve with the tip of your blade and twisting it to inflict maximum pain. Go ahead, give it a shot on that dummy."

At this point Abari didn't even have to think about where organs, arteries, veins, nerves, tendons, or anything else in the human body might be. It was as unconscious to him as the act of breathing. So with a deep breath, the boy stabbed the dummy where various nerve points would be, twisting the blade each time to get the technique down. This would be much more difficult to pull off in a fight than any of the previous techniques he'd used.

When the boy's instructor gave him a nod, Ren moved forward and drew their blade, ready for their next round of sparring. Abari dashed towards his opponent and delivered a flurry of slash in an attempt to make an opening. Ren fell into the boy's rhythm and began to parry the strikes. Abari used this opportunity to deliver a feint and stab at a nerve point in his opponent's hand before twisting the blade to inflict further pain. The strike was perfectly aimed but it seemed Abari had applied far too much pressure. It was still an effective attack but the goal was to inflict far more pain than that.

Ren healed his damaged nerve while they both reset. Taking a deep breath, Abari moved to take the offensive once more. The boy kept attacking higher and higher to draw his opponent’s guard upwards. Ren parried the attacks and started to push Abari back but the boy wouldn't let up. Not giving his opponent the chance to knock him off balance, Abari feinted and aimed a stab at a nerve point at the top of Ren's thigh. The boy twisted his blade as it made contact resulting in his opponent letting out a grunt of pain. Ren's teeth grit as he froze in place, unable to do much other than process the pain. Abari healed his opponent, feeling a little bad.

"Are you okay?"

"Don't worry. Handling pain is one of the things I hope to train by sparring you, let's go again!"

The boy shrugged. He had to admire his sparring partner's dedication. Entering Yoshin stance once more, Abari waited for his opponent to attack. Ren cautiously stepped forward and slashed towards the boy only to be parried. To his credit, Ren stopped there and rethought his approach. Not letting his opponent get too comfortable, Abari slashed a few times expecting to be blocked. Making sure not to give Ren an opening, the boy applied pressure on his opponent. Eventually, Ren realized that he couldn't afford to spend too much time waiting for a good moment to attack and thrust his blade towards the boy. Abari gave him no mercy, dodging and stabbing the same nerve point on Ren's upper thigh in the same motion. Twisting his blade, Abari caught his opponent dropping to one knee and freezing from the pain. The boy was definitely getting the hang of it. After receiving healing, Ren called for one last round.

Once his opponent was ready, Abari closed the distance and aimed a couple of slashes at them. After Ren parried them, the boy delivered a feint but his opponent didn’t fall for it. The man delivered a counter attack that Abari quickly dodged. Ren stepped forward, sending a few attacks the boy’s way hoping to gain momentum. Abari focused on defense as he blocked the incoming attacks. The boy was forced to take a few steps back as his opponent put more force into their strikes. Abari waited until Ren slipped up and sent a vertical slash the boy’s way before sidestepping the attack. Having created an opening, Abari stabbed at a nerve point in his opponent’s hand and twisted his blade. Ren dropped his blade as the immense pain effectively paralyzed him. After healing his opponent one last time, Abari turned to his instructor with a slight smile on his face.

“There’s a couple of kinks we’ll need to work out, but I think you got it down. Come back tomorrow.”

*[Yoshin • Great Serpent's Venom]
A-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): 30 Speed.
Momentarily torquing every muscle in their body, the practitioner launches a flurry of slashes and strikes aiming for various vital arteries, veins, and organs. The incisions caused by this technique are so incredibly precise that, while at rest, an opponent affected by this technique will not lose much blood at all. However, should said opponent afflicted by this technique overuse their muscles (exerting more than 15 Strength in any action or utilizing more than 15 Speed in any action), large gouts of blood will spray and pour from their wounds. For each instance in which the afflicted opponent exceeds either of the pre-stated limits, they will suffer a -3 Endurance penalty. These penalties will trigger and stack each time the afflicted opponent exceeds the limits imposed by this technique, and the effect persists until the opponent receives medical attention.
“The next technique is called the Great Serpent’s Venom. It has the same general concept at Bleed the Carcass but requires a much finer cut. When performed correctly, the opponent won’t lose much blood until they start moving. Then if the opponent exerts more than the minimum amount of energy, the blood will come pouring out. It’s not one that is easily taught through a training dummy, so we’ll get right to sparring.”

Both Abari and Ren took a fighting stance and waited a moment before starting the spar. The boy cautiously approached his opponent, waiting for an attack. Ren seemed unwilling to go on the offensive so Abari slashed a few times in an attempt to encourage his opponent to fight back. The man blocked the attacks but made no effort to counter attack, instead returning to a defensive stance and awaiting the boy’s next attack. If he was just going to keep his guard up, then Abari would just have to find a way to break it. The boy took a deep breath and decided to simply try and overwhelm his opponent. Torquing every muscle in his body, Abari launched a flurry of slashes at his opponent. Ren was only able to block the first two before the following attacks cut straight through various nerves and arteries. Far less blood than one would expect leaked from the man’s wounds as he brought his sword back into a defensive position. Abari sent a powerful slash his opponent’s way and the act of blocking it led to a large amount of blood pouring from Ren’s wounds. Abari helped the man heal his wounds before they moved on to the next sparring match.

Growing confident that he was getting the technique down, the boy was eager for the next round. Not wanting a repeat of the previous match, Ren took the offensive, doing his best to avoid making any careless mistakes. Abari blocked as he waited for an opening but his opponent’s swordsmanship had only improved from their various spars. But he had a long way to go before he could catch up with Abari. The boy parried an incoming strike and struck his opponent in the temple with the pommel of his sword. He used this opening to once again torque every muscle in his body and deliver a flurry of slashes. The boy’s blade cut cleanly through his opponent’s arteries and veins. Ren attacked Abari but the boy simply parried the attack as the exertion caused his opponent’s wounds to spray blood. After another session of healing, Ren called for the next round.

Both Abari and his instructor decided that this should be the last spar for Ren as even though they healed his wounds, he would still need time for his body to replenish the lost blood. When they both entered a fighting stance once again, the boy dashed forward. He was eager to try this new technique again so set out to try and create an opening. Knowing that his opponent was starting to get a read on him, Abari mixed slashes with feints. This volley of attacks couldn’t be maintained for long, but the boy hoped that the pressure would be too much for Ren. Abari was impressed by his opponent’s reaction speed, but it was slowing down as the barrage continued. The man had managed to read each incoming feint thus far, but after being backed into a corner, slipped up and brought his blade up to defend against an attack that never came. One last time for the day, Abari torqued every muscle in his body and delivered a volley of slashes. Blood trickled from the wounds momentarily before Ren moved forward to attack Abari. The blood sprayed from his wounds as he delivered another slash. The boy smiled, pleased that he’d managed to learn yet another advanced Yoshin technique. Effortlessly blocking the incoming attack, Abari knocked his opponent to the ground before healing their wounds. It wouldn’t be smart to let Ren push himself.

“Alright that’s enough. I’ll have you practice it a bit more tomorrow, but let’s let Ren heal up.”

*[Yoshin • Crushing Grip of the Great Serpent]
A-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): 35 Speed.
A technique designed to utterly maim and debilitate one's opponent, the practitioner will launch a flurry of strikes, all targeting key muscle groupings, tendons, joints, and gaps in the skeletal structure such as the ribs and spine. As the strikes make contact and sink into the opponent's flesh, the practitioner will violently twist the blade upon entry and upon exit. The violent twist will cause miniature air pockets to form and violently expand in the wound with a Strength equal to half of the practitioner's Strength stat, rounded down. These air pockets worsen the damage and bleeding, rendering the affected parts of the body and any parts of the body directly connected to them immobile and paralyzed unless the opponent has a Rigid Structure technique of equal or higher rank than this technique that protects bones, muscles, or skin against damage. For example, a blow to the shoulder would render the entire arm below it limp, and a blow to the spine would render anything below the affected vertebrae paralyzed. This paralysis is permanent until the opponent seeks highly skilled medical attention.
"This is the final thing I have to teach you, Abari. After this you've graduated. The last technique is called the Crushing Grip of the Great Serpent. It's another flurry of strikes but this time you're twisting your blade to create miniature air pockets. You're aiming for key muscle groupings, joints, tendons, and the like. If you do it right, this technique can do enough damage to render a limb completely immobile. This is another one we'll just have to go straight to sparring for."

With that, Abari entered Yoshin stance and waited for Ren to get ready. Ren took the initiative, stepping forward and delivering a series of slashes before retreating out of the boy's striking range. The man's swordsmanship was improving quickly through his spars with Abari. But he wasn't the only one improving. The boy delivered a low slash to draw his opponent’s guard low before manipulating his opponent’s blade into the ground. With an opening made, Abari aimed an elbow directly at Ren’s temple, stunning the man. As the man staggered backwards, Abari stabbed them in the shoulder and twisted their blade. While it still seriously damaged the tendon, it didn't produce the desired effect. The boy followed up with another aimed towards the top of Ren's knee and upon twisting the blade, managed to produce the air pocket he was going for. Taking note of how he pulled that off, Abari helped heal his opponent and prepared for the next round of sparring.

Having handled the pain quite well, Ren wasted no time in standing back up and entering a fighting stance. The man stepped forwards and started to put pressure on Abari by delivering a series of slashes and stabs, not intending to give the boy time to retaliate. Abari carefully parried the incoming attacks as he started to figure out the rhythm of Ren’s attacks. Luring his opponent into a false sense of security, the boy baited out a stab. When his opponent went for the stab, Abari stepped to the side and dodged the incoming attack. The boy took advantage of this opening to stab the inside of the elbow on Ren’s sword arm. Upon contact, Abari twisted the blade and created a miniature air pocket that destroyed the tendons in his opponent’s arm. To follow up, the boy did the same to his opponent’s knee. Both his sparring partner and the weapon they held fell to the ground. Abari wasted no time in healing Ren’s wounds and apologized for going overboard. His sparring partner insisted everything was fine and called for one more round.

As the boy and his opponent both entered a fighting stance, Abari took a deep breath. He was confident that he was getting the technique down but it required a lot of focus. The boy dashed towards Ren and aimed a series of slashes their way. He didn’t intend to land any of them, he was just looking to put some pressure on his opponent. Ren cautiously stepped backwards as he avoided the attacks. The boy made sure to cut off any attempts at side-stepping to ensure that his enemy was forced to go directly backwards. When his opponent found themselves getting close to the wall, Abari let up on the attacks. With nowhere left to go, Ren was forced to try and make a counter attack. Much to his surprise, Abari was barely able to dodge the first one. The attack was perfectly aimed, but wouldn’t be good enough. Expecting Ren’s second counter attack, Abari ducked low to dodge the slash while thrusting his sword into his opponent’s knee in the same motion. The boy twisted his blade and created a miniature air pocket, destroying the tendon in his opponent's knee. Ren tried to bring his blade up to strike the boy, but Abari dug his blade into their shoulder. After once again twisting the blade and ruining the tendon. Feeling bad for inflicting so much pain, Abari healed his opponent before turning back towards his instructor.

“Alright kid, I’ve taught you everything I know. You can consider yourself a master now, but if you want to reach the pinnacle of the Yoshin style, you’re going to have to go to the main dojo in Waterfall Country.”

*[Iaido • Weapon Mastery]
D-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Since Iaido is a style that prioritizes speed over brute strength, wise usage of the blade is paramount to the practitioner's success in the style. This Discipline represents the practitioner's knowledge of their weapon's strengths and weaknesses in combat, allowing them to use the weapon more efficiently both inside and outside of its use in Iaido techniques and avoid unnecessarily presenting their weapon's blind spots to the opponent.
It was a good day for a little Tameshigiri. The boy had set up a few different materials for him to cut. Abari had spent most of his life training with a katana. Even going so far as to stubbornly train a style that was normally for a wakizashi with one. Not a day had passed since he first picked up the blade without him training with it. The very few exceptions were when he was too injured to get out of bed. Otherwise he was doing everything he could to master the blade. Over this time he'd become acutely aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the katana. Most of them were fairly obvious. A katana wasn't meant for stabbing or to be used against a fully armored opponent. But that did not mean that you could not do so, just that it was less effective. A certain degree of skill could overcome most of these drawbacks. But if an opponent of equal skill were wielding a more suitable weapon, there was no replicating the results. After taking a deep breath, the boy slashed through the thin steel sheets propped before him. It was a clean cut, barely even leaving a scratch on the blade.

Where the katana really shined was in its slashing ability, particularly against unarmored opponents. Even the most novice of swordsmen could do some serious damage. With one fluid slash, Abari cut through a series of tatami matts that he had set up earlier. The katana had a reputation for breaking easily, so one wanted to avoid parrying with it. But all of that could be avoided by simply making a katana with higher quality materials. Abari took advantage of this in combat to seamlessly switch between attacking and defending. With such an extensive knowledge of his craft, the boy was able to mitigate all of the blind spots of the katana in combat. All flaws could be overcome with enough practice, so Abari tried not to miss a single day of training. Taking another deep breath, the boy cut through a series of bamboo shoots that were set up for Tameshigiri. Most of the time the act was done more as a display than a legitimate test cut, but Abari had no intention of making things a show. The boy was only concerned with the perfection of his art, and showmanship had no place in that. Pleased with the results of his Tameshigiri, Abari decided it was time to move onto his actual training for the day.

*[Iaido • Spectral Flight]
B-Rank Taijutsu Discipline
Prerequisite(s): 15 Strength, 25 Speed, *[Iaido • Ancestral Visage].
In order for Iaido to stand toe to toe with a variety of high-level opponents, refining fundamentals to a new height is necessary. This Discipline represents the practitioner's ability to more quickly accelerate to max movement speed and decelerate to a full stop at a moment's notice. This does not offer protection against attacks that the practitioner does not know is coming.
Abari had spent the last few weeks trying to improve his reaction time and while he had made significant improvements, he couldn’t help but feel that he had been going about it the wrong way. Until recently, he had been improving his ability to predict his opponent’s next move rather than his actual reaction speed. It was time to change that. With the help of Ren, Abari set up a training method not unlike one of the games he used to play as an academy student. When Ren called for him to move, he ran towards them and when they said to stop, he would stop. The only difference was that at any point Ren could inflict a surprise attack.

Three days of this had passed before things finally started to click for Abari. He already had the foundations of Iaido to build off of, which made things much easier. It was the same idea as using the sudden tension of your muscles to quickly draw your blade, just applied to your whole body instead. When Ren gave the command. Abari dashed forwards, reaching his top speed in nearly an instant. In just a couple of seconds, he had covered a significant amount of ground. As Ren called to stop, Abari halted almost instantaneously as the command was given. It was more difficult to suddenly stop than it was to start, but Abari eventually got it down.

As Ren called for Abari to move forward again, he sprinted max speed towards the man and barely noticed the two shuriken that were heading his way. Without so much as a thought, he drew his blade and intercepted the shuriken just in time. It was much easier to react to such things with a blank mind. It allowed the body’s instinct to take over and eliminate any time wasted thinking about your reaction. Continuing his dash forward, homemade it inches away from Ren before the man unexpectedly went for another surprise attack. Abari hadn’t even seen the blade headed towards him but noticed the man’s muscles move. He instantly stopped in his place and in the same motion drew his sword with blinding speed. Ren’s sword flew out of his hands as Abari used his free hand to grab the man’s shoulder.

“I win”

It was safe to say that Abari had finally gotten it down. Not only had he managed to figure out how to instantly accelerate, but now it had become instinct for him. With this, he could continue onto more difficult Iaido techniques. Admittedly, the difference in speed was the only reason he could intercept the unexpected attacks, but that was something he could work on later.

*[Iaido • Silent Passing]
B-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): *[Iaido • Death’s Gates].
Unlike most of Iaido's techniques, Silent Passing is not particularly useful in the heat of combat. Instead, it is an attack meant to be executed from a standing position, such as while casually walking towards an opponent. Once in close enough proximity to the opponent, the practitioner draws their sword, strikes the opponent's opening, and sheaths their blade with such speed, it appears to the untrained eye that the practitioner continued to simply walk past their target. Properly reading this attack requires the opponent to have a Perception technique of equal or higher rank than this technique. Otherwise, the opponent will not be capable of fully avoiding this attack if they are in range without some sort of passive defense.
Once again, Abari recruited Ren to help him train another technique. This time, however, his friend would be taking a much more passive role. Silent Passing was not necessarily a technique used in the middle of combat so he just needed Ren to watch. The technique was iconic, but far from easy to execute. You needed to hone the fundamentals of Iaido and be exceptionally fast to pull it off. It consisted of calmly walking past your opponent but unsheathing and striking your opponent before sheathing in the process of doing so. If performed correctly, then the attack would be imperceptible to all but the most trained eye, instead seeming like they simply walked by.

Having set up a training dummy, he asked Ren to watch closely and let him know if he saw anything. With a deep breath, Abari walked casually in the direction of the training dummy. In the immediate moment he passed, he tensed his muscles and unleashed his blade with blinding speed before sheathing it equally as fast. Turning over to Ren he was disappointed to hear that he'd made a mistake. The attack itself was fast enough that Ren did not see it, but Abari had stopped walking for a split second when attacking.

Irritated, Abari walked back to reset. He thought carefully about how to fix his issue. After a moment, he came to the conclusion that he had two options: either he could try to move even faster so that even the split-second pause was imperceptible, or he could time the attack perfectly with his step to disguise the pause. The first option would take way too much training to pull off, so he decided to go with the latter. Once again walking casually towards the training dummy, he waited until he was within range and timed the tensing of his muscles with a forward step. His blade shot out from its sheath and sliced straight through the training dummy. For good measure, the red-haired swordsman looped back around and walked by it once more. Applying the same technique as before, he timed his attack with his steps and delivered an impossibly fast slash at the training dummy. After inflicting two perfectly clean cuts, he turned back to Ren to check. With a smile, his training partner told him that he couldn’t see a thing. Pleased with the results, Abari set out to practice the next Iaido technique on his list.

*[Iaido • Death Draw]
B-Rank Taijutsu Maneuver
Prerequisite(s): 20 Strength, 25 Speed, *[Iaido • Death’s Gate], *[Iaido • Spectral Flight].
Building upon the premise established by the Death's Gate technique, this technique now makes it possible to use the technique against opponents at greater distances. Drawing upon the superlative speed of Iaido, the practitioner momentarily torques the muscles in their body to instantly accelerate to their maximum speed. Dashing a number of meters equal to the practitioner's Strength, they draw their sword from its scabbard and deliver a blindingly fast slash before sheathing their blade. Properly reading this attack requires the opponent to have a Perception technique of equal or higher rank than this technique. Otherwise, the opponent cannot accurately read the attack and will be unlikely to completely avoid the attack, if at all.
No assistance was needed for the next technique. All Abari needed was a training dummy and an open area. Like many Iaido techniques, the concept was simple. This one was another blindingly fast slash that consisted of drawing and sheathing one's blade. The difference? This one was designed to cover a large distance. In one extremely fast motion the user needed to dash forwards, instantly reaching max speed, and slash the opponent once within range. It was not a technique that could be simply taught, but rather one that needed to be cultivated. Without the foundations of the previous techniques, one would find it nearly impossible to pull off.

Abari had never attempted it, most of his training was focused on honing the fundamentals to the highest degree he could manage. Without a sensei to guide him, it was difficult to tell when he was ready for the next step. If he had trusted his own gut, he would never have thought he was skilled enough to even attempt the higher level techniques. But things were different after pushing his Yoshin abilities towards their ceiling. Now he knew that he could go further with Iaido.

Starting easy but not too easy, Abari set up a dummy and stood thirty meters away from it. It was a large distance to cover in one instantaneous dash, but it felt doable. He had covered a similar distance without much issue in the past. Taking in a deep breath, the red-haired swordsman drew his focus to a single point: the training dummy. With lungs full of air, he relaxed the muscles throughout his body. In the same instant he exhaled, he torqued every muscle in his body and dashed forward with blinding speed. Abari was surprised at just how fast he had managed to not only close the distance but draw and sheath his blade as well.

With a slight smile, he realized that he had once again underestimated just how solid of a foundation he had built. Knowing he could push himself further, Abari set up another training dummy and moved forty meters away from it this time. Like before he took a deep breath in and dashed at full speed on the exhale. He managed to close the distance in an instant and cut the dummy in half. This was likely the furthest he could go before his speed started to fall off. Something he would have to improve later, but for now it was safe to put this one in the books. It was time to move on to something even more advanced.
