[Mission] Baby It's Cold Outside

Mission Request
Nighttime was a terrible time - the cold was enough to drive everyone to their shelters, and the wind bit harder than a feral dog. However, in this particular little oasis-village, two ridiculously unfortunate men were still on patrol right outside of a certain warehouse building. A structure of stone, the Genryuu Warehouse was unmistakable. It towered over the rest of the buildings in this oasis-village; it was also the only one actually constructed out of material designed to last long. For everyone else in this village, it was tents and huts and makeshift homes.

The warehouse was, from the outside, a giant rectangular prism - its only entrance, the large set of double doors in front. The perfectly smooth walls hosted no other possible exits, no doors nor windows. The roof was flat, but at least three stories up. No normal man could climb such a thing, especially since no entrance was visible up there if seen from below.

No, it was just that door, and the two freezing men standing in sentry before it, each one with a scimitar at their sides.

[Mission] Baby It's Cold Outside

Yato wasn't the type to stay up late during the night, and preferred to finish missions during the day. That being said, work was scarce and he also wasn't the type to decline a (seemingly) easy job--one where he would unexpectedly break into a security system and try to obtain an object. He didn't have to fail or succeed in breaking in; he just had to try his best.

It had been a week or so since he took up the mission offer, and he figured that the shroud of the night would be good cover to be as inconspicuous as possible. From afar, he gazed at the scene--indeed, a formidable defense, but Yato was inventive and competitive and sought to attempt to get in and get out without so much as a scratch. Combat was a last resort for him.

He quietly tiptoed at a rather high speed through and around the area, making sure to not be seen as he stuck tightly underneath the shadows of the tents around him and looked around for a possible entryway. With two men in front of the doors, he had no choice but to look elsewhere. Perhaps, by chance, the colossal building might have been built with a thinner ceiling so that it would not collapse and he would be able to break through it unnoticed because of the distance from the top to the guards.

After striding to the opposite side of the doors--the back wall of the building, Yato quickly and quietly ran up the wall all three stories up and climbed up to the top of the building before pulling out a kunai and dropping on his knees. He placed his ear up against the extremely cold roof and tapped it with the blunt circular end of his knife to see if it was the slightest bit hollow.

The roof was, as luck would have it, thinner than the walls - but only slightly so. Given the thickness of the walls, that wasn't saying much for the intruder's chances of breaking in.

On the other hand, there was something maybe better than a thin roof. There were no less than two wooden trapdoors on the flat rooftop, each one large enough for at least three grown men to enter simultaneously. That was both a good and a bad thing, if one thought about it enough. One was located closer to the front of the building, near the side with the doors; that one was marked by a large black X. The other, closer to where Yato himself now was, was unmarked; the wood on it, though, was visibly more aged than the other.

Excluding the doors, there was nothing else on the rooftops, not even a lamp. The soft glow of the moon was the only thing illuminating his surroundings, and the persistent howl of the wind the only thing audible in the area.

Yato sighed when he thought found that nothing was on the roof. "Course, there's no way it would be this easy..." he thought to himself. He quietly walked across the top of the roof and looked down and around to see if there were any areas where he would possibly be able to enter quietly from. For some odd reason, he missed the trap doors, but when he turned around again they suddenly seemed to appear out of nowhere--though they had always been there--which startled him a bit.

It felt like a board game where he had to choose between two paths. One was bold and the other was mysterious. Having no way of finding out which was the safer route, he digged into his pockets and took out a coin, which he flipped onto the palm of his hand. "Heads..." After putting the coin back into his pocket, he walked over to the unmarked trap door and slowly lifted it up while peeking in.

As he lifted it up, the intruder would find that maybe the visible aging of the wood did affect the trapdoor - it creaked and groaned loudly.

Peeking in, Yato would only be able to see what the moonlight would show him - not much. There was a ladder leading downwards, down to what was presumably the third floor. The floor itself looked to be made of stone as well, or packed and dried bricks of sand, because in a land of desert creativity was not an option for the thrifty.

On the floor were, well, boxes. There was clearly a space, a strip of the floor that had nothing on it, but to the sides were many large wooden crates and barrels, among other containers. They all had large and visible labels, though from high up there it wouldn't be easy to read them.

Interestingly enough, dim light shown from within - so there was a light in there of some sort. Once more, being on the rooftop made it difficult to see exactly what was down there.

"Fuck me," he thought, as the old trap door creaked loudly. He hoped that since he was on the third floor the guards would hardly notice. But seeing that they were in fact guards, he assumed that if the sounds were loud enough they would have suspicion. He needed to act quick. There was hardly any light in the entryway, so while holding up the trap door with his shoulder, he formed hand seals to spawn an erratic clone of lightning.

As he directed the clone down the ladder, he held the trap door in place by taking off his knapsack and slowly closing the door onto it. It would be a bit more difficult without tools to navigate through the area, but he wasn't anticipating direct combat, and by his logic it'd be better if there wasn't a second loud creaking noise raising more suspicion. There would be no way that the guards would be able to climb to the ceiling from the outside in order to see the backpack anyways; unless of course they were shinobi.

After leaving his backpack, Yato climbed down the ladder, using his clone as a makeshift source of flashy light.

As he descended, noticed a light and immediately dispersed his clone to conceal himself. Stopping himself on the ladder so that he would be able to further hide his presence, he looked down and noticed crates and containers and focused his eyes so that he would be able to read the labels on them clearly.

Yato was now in a large room; it appeared that the entire third floor was a single room, made specifically to store as many things as possible. Boxes, crates, barrels, things wrapped in paper and metal alike - containers were stored and stacked up to the ceiling, making the place a maze as good as any. At the moment, surrounded by walls of items, there was no passageway to other floors in sight, only twisting routes and turning paths.

After a few moments of hiding, the intruder would notice that there was no other sound; that light did not come from another person. If he braved it, a few more steps down the ladder would reveal an actual lantern hanging on a pole attached to the floor, and some distance away another lantern - so the room was lit, though strangely. These lanterns were small things of metal and glass, encasing the flames as so to prevent the fire from escaping. Strange markings were around each lantern, script altogether illegible. The light emanating from these lanterns were just enough to light every passageway.

Now, as for the markings on the containers themselves - they were, to say the least, mundane. There were candles, there were cloaks, there were crates of cloth and barrels of dried tea leaves.

Also a map with a "you are here" symbol slapped on one of the larger boxes adjacent from the ladder; apparently, he was on the end closest to the 'miscellaneous merchandise'. The stairs downwards were on the other end, and the exit was labeled with 'weapons and shinobi supplies'.

There was a strange set of markings on the map surrounding what looked like a drawing of a hand in the center of the map, but who knew what that meant.

Yato first read the crates and found some use in one of the many things, namely the map--he did not know if this was some security measure or something of the like, but he picked it up and began to walk around as he carefully read it. From what he ascertained, he was on the top floor, which was apparently the third floor, and the more he walked around the more he realized that the map was quite accurate, so he chose to trust it. "Miscellaneous merchandise, eh? You got that right..." He scoffed at the crates filled with random junk as he began walking towards the stairs end. He figured he would ignore the weapons and shinobi supplies; if it came down to it he would use covert methods to hide, or if it came to even more desperate measures he would use ninjutsu.

As he walked to the staircase he wondered what the markings with the hand meant. Perhaps it was a puzzle? Or perhaps it was the locations of traps. What the hand was boggled him and he became more curious and engrossed with the mission he was in with every step he took.

And now here came a maze dilemma.

Before him were three routes - forward, left, and right. Judging from the map, all three had different and unconnected paths to the other side of the room. The path to the left was strange in the fact that it was surrounded by nothing but cube-shaped crates, wooden, none of which actually had any markings upon them. It was, however, the most straight-forward path, with a mere two turns necessary to get to the other side of the room.

The right path was complex, and in fact was no straight path - containers spilled out onto the ground, meaning that physical exertion was unavoidable, and some of the stuff there looked precarious even from his location. For one, that giant barrel that looked like it was an inch away from falling over and smashing everything below it. Also, the jungle gym of random metal containers in shapes with sharp edges.

The central path was pretty clear. It led over where that hand-shaped marking on the map was; from here, Yato could see the presence of a circular opening in the maze, a single lantern on a pole in its center. Strange, but not exactly a death trap in appearance.

Yato slowed to a halt when he realized he came to a fork in the road. He looked up from his map to confirm his position and looked back down at his map. There were three choices, but he didn't know which one to choose. One one hand, there were two paths that looked like they went to the same area, but on the other hand, there was this mysterious center area with a lantern in it.

He figured, that, because he was on the top floor he might have already had access to where the main storage unit containing the blue box might be. Perhaps, the hand on the map was the key to figuring out where the room was. Still, the straight path was too suspicious even despite the fact that there hadn't been too much difficulty prior to reaching the fork in the path. He jumped and grabbed a lantern off of the wall of the path behind him and gauged his strength before lightly tossing and rolling it into the center path to test for any kinds of booby traps.

Wise.

The moment the lantern rolled within several feet of that central lantern, a puff of smoke blasted out of nowhere - someone had taken the effort to set up several fuuins in that circular opening. When the smoke dissipated, mere moments later, that single lantern was now absolutely wrapped in tight bandages coming from every side; there were more than enough bandages to completely restrict a small militia, much less a single intruder. That lantern that was once hanging by a pole in the middle of the clearing was now attached to the top of this array of bandages, directly in the center. The sheer amount of bandages, coming from the walls, the floor, the ceiling, meant that the central path was no longer an option.

So this was what men with money and paranoia could do.

On the other hand, the lanterns all around the room began to intensify in their glow. More than that, actually. For one, a loud crash could be heard as the giant barrel, disturbed from its precarious location thanks to the activated fuuins, fell from its place, breaking open and releasing a mass of white powder into the air; the entire right path was covered in the chalky stuff. In doing so, however, it scattered or crushed all of the lesser containers below, effectively removing the obstacle-course aspect of that route.

The left path appeared unaffected, except for the increased light of the lanterns.

"Well, finally, at least there's a bit of security in this building. I was beginning to think this was too easy", he thought to himself. Smirking at the sheer amount of bandages in the central path, he looked to the two other side paths. They were longer but they obviously were the superior options. In the moment that he saw the bandages, however, sounds of destruction came from the right path and he started to become a little more cautious than he previously was.

His two options, the destroyed chalky right path and the calm yet very lit left path, were still both filled with mystery. Regardless, he began to take a walk down the chalky right path as he felt some sense of eeriness from the brighter lanterns. "The traps on this path have probably already been triggered", he thought to himself.

The walk down the right path was horrifying...

in how utterly anti-climatic it was.

No really, it was just walking down a path of chalk dust. Yes, the dust was everywhere, yes, it was eerie in how silent and still everything was, but honestly it was just walking. By the time he'd turned the corner, Yato would find himself standing before a staircase leading downwards to the second floor. A very conveniently-placed sign, attached to the wall next to the staircase, had the phrase "this way to second floor" written in calligraphy. Not even good calligraphy, it looked like a rushed job.

From where he was before the top of the stairs, Yato would be able to see that the map was very much accurate; there was an open crate near the bottom of the stairs with an open lid; from within, countless four-sided shuriken laid in neat rows. A box right next to that one contained something that, from his location, looked like a human arm. Several other boxes nearby proudly displayed their contents - swords, daggers, kunai, senbon, and other implements of wood and metal.

The light emanating from the second floor was dimmer than that of the one he was on right now; in fact, it was exactly as bright as the lanterns up here were prior to being activated by that fuuin.

Yato's calm walk through the chalky path eased his nerves as he confirmed once again that the map he was given was--surprisingly--accurate. He continued down the stairs while looking at his surroundings for any other possible security measures and traps. Again, there were many boxes containing many objects; that was to be expected of a building used primarily for storage. He took a set of 6 shuriken and stuffed them in the pockets of his jacket before taking a look at something that caught his interest: it appeared to be a human arm. He immediately walked towards it and took a closer look.

Meanwhile, he also noticed that the lights were once again dimmer and he reckoned that brighter lights meant that a trap had been triggered. By that logic, it also meant there were more traps on and in the second floor, so while he was excited about what appeared to be an arm, he was also cautious and ready to make action at any moment in time.

Anyone who had ever seen a traveling puppeteer's shows on moonless nights would have known - never walk close to an arm lying around inconspicuously.

The moment Yato walked close enough to see that the arm was indeed very much humanoid, with five digits and all, the arm itself shot out at him, aiming to grab onto the intruder. It wasn't very strong, nor was it durable, but it yes; it was a puppet arm. The sign did, after all, say "weapons and shinobi supplies", and he was, after all, in Wind Country.

The lanterns began to glow brighter, as puppet heads - both finished and incomplete - began to fall from the ceiling, released by a set of fuuin that someone had took the time and energy to actually inscribe onto each and every corner of that room. Most of them were human or humanoid in design.

This was somewhere very high on the list of messed-up "Wind Country Welcomes You!" greetings.

After about a minute or two, the fuuins were all emptied, leaving simply a pile of heads scattered around the room. The other stuff, the weapons and whatnot, were revealed to have no fuuin or anything of the like on them; so at least there was a good side to the releasing of the trap. The increased lighting would let Yato see that there were no more traps in here, at least, nothing that he could see.

The opening across the room showed a long hallway with many doors on both sides, and a door on the opposite end. Most of these doors were slightly open - not enough to look inside, but enough to notice that they weren't completely closed. This hallway, unlike the rest of the building, had flickering lights - because why not? Long hallway, many doors, flickering lights, what could possibly go wrong?

The hand suddenly jumped out at Yato, but because he was cautious he leaped out of the way and it hit the wall instead. Beads of sweat began to roll down his cheeks from a state of surprise and puppet heads fell down all around him. It took him quite a bit of effort not to yell out curse words; he wasn't very fond of puppets and they creeped him out to an extent. The heads continued to fall for a couple of minutes, but it felt like a very long time to Yato. Luckily, he did not get harmed, and proceeded to brush the heads off of his body before standing up.

He noticed that the lamps were indeed lit brighter again, and nodded to himself in affirmation to his previous theory about the lanterns and traps.

He continued down the hall until he came to the point where doors were strewn out across both sides, slightly opened with flickering lights next to them. It seemed to Yato that more than a safe storage area this was a haunted house attraction for citizens to attend. He sighed as he looked around with a glimmer of nervousness in his eyes. He decided to ignore the doors in fear that they might have held traps and continued to the end before reaching out and slowly opening the door at the end of the hallway.

This here was some Five Nights at Genryuu's-level stuff.

After the trap that had turned so many heads in the most literal sense of the term, it wouldn't be surprising if Yato knew exactly what was going to come next - but as he walked through the hallways, his ignoring the doors didn't mean that the doors would necessarily ignore him as well.

Every few doors held a surprise, be it a puppet's head firing out of a weak cannon out a door and into the adjacent room, pairs of arms clasping together just before he could move forwards, forcing him to duck or leap, or, in one particularly memorable case, a complete seven foot-tall puppet falling out of the doorway onto the ground, forcing Yato to have to climb over its cold metal body to get to the other side.

Opening the door at the end of the hallway, Yato would find himself before another set of stairs, leading down to the first floor of the warehouse, a single giant room with much fewer items than the third floor. Most of these were large objects, furniture and raw materials and the like. There were only a few lanterns down there, but what made it remarkable was the fact that there was a small blue box on a stool in the room. This made sense, since the first floor of a warehouse was easiest to access; it was natural that this was the main storage unit.

Except, in a cruel twist of humor, the box and stool were placed right before the set of doors that made up the main entrance to the building.

As he expected, the hallway wasn't just for show. Heads and puppet limbs were flying every which way at him, forcing him to increase his speed to dodge each oncoming projectile until he heard a noise from above and was nearly crushed by a titanic metal puppet that came crashing down. He narrowly escaped it's heavy wrath by jumping backwards and falling onto his back. His impact with the ground hurt, but he enjoyed the pain and it fueled him with a small dose of adrenaline.

He quickly climbed over the metal puppet's body and walked down the next set of stairs, and if his calculations were right, he would be at the first floor. Guards were stationed outside so he was especially quiet as he entered the first floor and took a gander at the things around him. The room was huge to say in the very least, but the blue box that was his target from the box stood out and he slapped his face with his palm in disappointment knowing that if he had subdued the guards outside the mission would have been so much quicker. Who would have thought that the item that he would have to steal would be on the bottom floor?

He sighed and quietly tiptoed over to the box before picking it up slowly, ready to react to any sort of thing that would pop up. He was hoping that the guards would not enter the room by some ungodly chance.

The moment he picked up the box, Yato would notice the familiar markings of something being drawn, via chakra, right under the box - so it was trapped!

The seal, activated, began to activate a series of other seals placed in short intervals around it; a chain reaction, if ever there was any. From the stool to the floor, and then to the walls, and finally to the ceiling, where a puff of smoke erupted - to reveal a message written via chakra on the ceiling.

"Don't Forget to Place the Trap Here, Ryuu"

...

Looked like someone would have some explaining to do tomorrow.
The blue box was made of some good-quality material, but simple in design, and easy to open - there wasn't even a lock, a simple pull would swing the top of the box open in a moment.

In it was the payment for the mission, as well as a little handwritten note on a scrap of paper. Wait a minute, that wasn't a handwritten note. It was a map of the third floor, with a title of "Third Floor Map", and on the backside someone had scribbled, rather messily, "Ryuu, don't forget to replace the real map with this one before nighttime!"

It looked like a job well done. Someone was going to get a beating real bad tomorrow, but it wasn't going to be Yato.

Yato lifted the box and quickly jumped back while keeping a hold onto it as soon as he noticed the fuiinjutsu activating. "S-shit!" he grumbled quietly to himself. He wasn't in a position to dodge anything that was coming up, so he held the box in front of his flinching face in anticipation. A few moments passed until he realized that there was nothing happening, so he slowly lowered the box and walked over to where the fuiinjutsu was to read the paper that was left behind. He couldn't help but let out a laugh at the irony of the situation; the only trap that he truly let himself fall into was one that hadn't even been made.

Yato opened the blue box next, out of curiosity, and inside there was payment. He couldn't help but feel strange that the mission-requester had anticipated his security system to be broken through. He laughed once more as he realized that the mission-requester might not have had much confidence in the security to begin with.

After spending a few moments writing a message on the back of the slip that regarded the fake map, Yato left through the staircases leading upward and through the trap door that he entered from, taking his backpack as he left.

What was written on the note that Yato left behind was a poke of fun at the mission-requester. It read, "Needs traps."

The sun was high in the sky the next day, as a certain irate Mister Genryuu had the time of his life yelling at the poor genin he'd hired to set the traps in the first place.

"You had one job, Ryuu, one job!" The old man shouted, as he walked through the building. "Look at this! You didn't put in anything into the fuuin that was supposed to be the last resort, there's a trail of chalk going down all the way from the third floor, your puppet traps didn't even do anything- do you have any idea how much these puppet parts costed me? - I can't believe my very own grandson could be so incompetent. And what's with the bandage trap on the third floor, didn't you say it would catch living things?!"

The poor young man had some quick thinking to do.

"N-No, Grandpa Genryuu, you see, the bandage trap on the third floor activates if it detects heat, sir, and the puppets were supposed to actually attack the intruders but I forgot to inscribe that part, and the first floor's trap hasn't been shipped over yet, sir- but sir! With the trail of chalk, now we'll know exactly how a real intruder would run along!" He pointed at the white trail that Yato had unwittingly left behind the last evening. "See?"

Unfortunately, Mr. Genryuu was busy looking at something else - a certain scrap of paper, in fact.

"Ryuu, did you forget to replace the third floor's map?"

"E-Excuse me, sir?"

"I said, did you forget to replace the map of the third floor?"

"Were-Was I supposed to do that-"

"Ryuu!!"

By the time Mr. Genryuu's cane had made contact with the genin's poor buttocks, Yato was already far out of sight, the ordeal far out of his mind.
