[Plotboard] The Last Outpost

Post by TyDie » Sun Aug 07, 2016 2:25 pm

The past months had been strenuous to say the least. Outpost after outpost was built by the team that she had requested, as Sayaka had no way to build the outposts herself. Lacking the ability to use Doton made such things difficult to say the least, but Sayaka's role was just as crucial as the building of the site itself. Sayaka was the scout; the one who went ahead of the group and cleared out any natural hazards or wildlife along the way, and the one who found the spot for the next outpost.

At least fifty times now, the routine was mostly the same: Sayaka would find a suitable location and clear out anything that was in the way of the outpost's construction, while Tsubaki, the Jounin in charge of the construction squad, trailed about a mile behind her. Once Tsubaki and her team caught up, they would set up camp in the area, and over the next few days, the outpost would be outfitted with the needed furniture carried by the various wagons the squad brought along. Things such as cots and work offices, as well as holding cells with simple benches to hold criminals the outposts managed to capture were put into each outpost. However, they didn't outfit the outpost with any food or water; that was the job of the squad that suna would send to man the outpost. After each outpost was completed, a member of the construction squad would send the location of the outpost to Suna via a link seal connected to part of the squad in Suna, and that squad member would inform the village that the outpost was complete and ready to be manned.

The system was practically fullproof, as was evident by their continued success. Of course, there were plenty of hang ups along the way, mostly wildlife and issues with the nomadic people of wind country, but it was all handled by Sayaka. Of course... the woman hadn't experienced anything like she would today. As every day had been on this trip throughout the desert, Sayaka walked alone through the desert in search of the location of the next outpost, or in this case the final outpost. This last outpost would easily dwarf the rest of the outposts with it's size: it would be able to fit over 50 shinobi, and it would even serve as a beacon in the desert to connect diplomats and traders between Konoha and Suna. As such, the location needed to be perfect... so Sayaka trudged through the seemingly endless dunes in search of the perfect location.

[Plotboard] The Last Outpost

There had been moments, especially early on, where Sayaka had run in pursuit of a new place. But she had quickly relearned just how important it was in the desert to conserve energy. At the moment she was walking along at a decent pace, her head on a swivel as she watched all around her for any sign of a decent place. While part of her was thinking of having them make a construct she was also thinking a very large cave would do wonderfully, or even a series of caves would be most ideal.

Being in the desert, her long hair was back in a single braid and up in a bun to keep it all out of her face and out of the way in case of a fight. Some of these discoveries had gone simply, some not, and if she found what she wanted she knew it could be the most difficult of all. She wore her typical gear with a pack on her back with her meager supplies, a bottle hanging off of it with water in it. She had only been taking small sips here and there, enough to keep her hydrated without wasting it in case things went entirely wrong in the desert. "Ya know it's a good thing I got you behind me or I might get lost out in this mess." she muttered, probably not for the first time in the last several weeks through a link seal to Tsubaki. The quiet drove her nuts sometimes and so Sayaka would speak through it to make conversation once in a great while, a bad habit likely but one that had been tolerated thus far.

It had certainly come in handy once though when she'd realized she needed a way to keep the sun out of her eyes and so now she went out in a straw coolie hat. The item was simple but did the job, and even now as a small gust of wind blew up her right hand snatched up and grabbed onto the edge of it, to keep it in place. Her eyes scanned as far as she could and she sighed. "Really hope I find something soon..."

The message came clear over Tsubaki's fuuinjutsu, and with a small sigh she shook her head and responded. "Well, you know the drill Sayaka, we've been at it for months now. Stay focused on finding a location, let us worry about your whereabouts." Of course she knew that Sayaka was more than capable of keeping her mind on task, but Sayaka also knew by now that Tsubaki was 95% serious. Getting a smile out of the girl was an incredible feat, let alone maintaining friendly conversation for longer than 5 minutes.

Moving back to Sayaka, the woman was now treading not through sands, but through barren earth. The only things breaking the monotony of the dry, cracked landscape was the occasional boulder or cactus. The woman's walk would continue on for over an hour with little change, except of course the steady increase in heat. Eventually however, the woman finally stumbled upon something that might fit her purposes; the earth curved inwards at a 20 degree angle, steadily dropping lower and lower before flattening out after about a 20 meter drop. At the bottom of this divot in the earth sat a large patch of flat land at least 100 meters in diameter. As she descended into the area, she would discover that it wasn't -quite- as hot down here due to the cold air that was pushed downward by the hot air above it. it was only a 5 degree change at most, but it was enough to notice and provide a slight bit of relief from the sweltering heat.

Perhaps it was the location she was looking for.

Sayaka sighed and shook her head at Tsubaki's response. The woman was so straight-edged it was hard to imagine her doing anything other than missions and staring at a wall watching paint dry when she was at home. For probably the third time since this all started, Sayaka muttered into her seal, "I swear we are getting drinks at the next festival just so I can see if you know how to have fun, woman." She shook her head again as she continued on, her eyes scanning the sands as she searched for what would become their last outpost.

She came to realize at some point that she had left the sand behind, her feet finding barren earth which brought a smile to her face. She was out of the desert and likely closer to the border, which she knew meant she was getting close to where she wanted to be for this outpost. It would be their largest and likely a bridge between them and their allies.

As she walked along she came along what appeared to be a valley of sorts. The earth curved downward into a flat plain, though the structure of it made it seem man made, Sayaka was happy to see it, and even happier to feel it. As she stepped further down the shallow slope she found the air cooled as she went along, a relief out here in this heat that could certainly be taken advantage of for an outpost. 'Perhaps an underground facility here? Between the earth and the slope it could be quite cool without any further aid from chakra...' she thought to herself as she went.

"I think I found something." Sayaka remarked into the seal as she walked. "It looks like a man-made valley of sorts, but the slope is enough it provides relief from the sun and wind a bit... I'm going to explore it some more. It might be ideal for an underground facility..." Sayaka picked her way as she walked down the slope, her eyes scanning and taking in as much as she could, her hands straying back to rest on her Koibito No Tanken as she moved.

As she made her way down into the canyon, she could feel how solid the earth was beneath her feet. The foundation of her final outpost perhaps? It would need to be inspected further by the team following behind her to ensure that it was capable of supporting the weight of the sizable outpost Sayaka had in mind, but based on the previous outposts they had made, it seemed it would be a feasible option. Of course, nature had other plans, and places like these were coveted among the creatures of the desert as Sayaka was about to find out.

From the height she was at before, she hadn't noticed it very well, but now that she was below the heat, she could see something she had not seen before due to a heat mirage; holes. lots and lots of holes. hundreds of them. And Sayaka's footsteps had stirred the inhabitants of the nest; before long, one after another, scorpions came skittering up from the earth to defend their home. And not just normal sized scorpions; these scorpions were 2 meters in length from head to tail, two and a half counting the claws. At the moment there was only about 20 of them, but there were over a hundred holes in the ground at a glance... there were bound to be more.

The scorpions that had revealed themselves immediately charged the woman with unnatural speed, their claws clicking and their tails bobbing above their heads as they darted across the sands towards her, obviously with the intent to sting and claw and bite the woman until she was no more.

"....well this is not what I had hoped for..." Sayaka muttered glumly as she saw the scorpions popping out of their holes. She really didn't want the things getting very close to her, and at the same time she really didn't want to damage the ground. But ground could be repaired by shinobi better than she could and so with a sigh of resignation she formed the seals and just as some of the critters got the idea to run at her, she slammed her hands into the ground.

"Be careful of the ground when you get here." she spoke into her seal to her oncoming group as the jutsu did its work and the ground began to turn to lava. She frowned as she watched it happen, sincerely hoping the ground could be repaired later, and also hoping the scorpions would sink into the lava before getting to her.

She really hated bugs, and while scorpions weren't bugs she still viewed them as such, and the fact that they were so huge really wasn't helping her mood any.
Jutsu UsedShow
~Kaenton • Lava Field
A-ranked Ninjutsu
Prerequisite: ~Kaenton • Magma Touch
After performing a long string of handseals, the user slams their hands into the ground and pours Kaenton chakra into it. For the next post, the ground within a 20 meter radius of the user melts, becoming a hot liquid form; essentially lava. A 2 meter radius around the user is the only spot within the 20 meter radius that doesn't get converted to lava. This lava remains the same ridiculously hot temperature for up to 4 posts before the Kaenton chakra within it runs out, at which point it begins to cool and solidify at a pace dependent on its environment, with regular environments resulting in the lava cooling down and solidifying within one post. This lava is extremely dangerous and destructive and will cause fourth degree burns with sustained contact, with further exposure actually causing complete destruction of a body part. The drawback to this jutsu is that the user can not control the lava in any way and are hurt by it just as much as anybody else.
