Down in the southern end of Wind country a large sinkhole had begun to form in the center of a small village. As it grew larger a being of living earth could be seen within its depths. It had apparently been eating the earth and stones beneath the village in order to grow in size. Though eating was not quite the right word as the spirit had no mouth, or even eyes. It's “arms” continuously changed shape as it dug out, and ate everything.

This spirit outbreak was proving to be quite the adventure for the genin of Konoha. For only the second time in his life Yozei had been permitted to travel outside of Fire Country. The trek through Oasis had been very memorable, despite the majority of the land being barren there were a few streams here and there and the handful of villages they passed through were beautifully lush and rich with trade. Each one had been very secure and well defended actually, acting as a mustering point for hundreds of shinobi both from Konoha and Suna as they relayed information to one another and designated tasks, sending shinobi out between resting periods in order to quell the spirits that had been mostly pinned along the borders of each great nation, attacked from both sides.

Of course there were always spirits that slipped through the cracks, random small villages here and there that were attacked or went off grid for days at a time. It was more difficult to get on top of such situations and often genin were sent in as scouts to determine the situation. In this instance Yozei would be sent in to a small village in southern Wind country that a civilian had come from, claiming they were having an issue with sinkholes. By the time he had arrived there the scenario seemed to have escalated somewhat, it was now evident that this was in fact a spirit related incident and not an environmental issue. Speaking with a few local villagers Yozei quickly found himself at the center of the commotion, standing at the edge of the largest sinkhole and staring down a fairly large spirit by his standards at least.

He had to at least test the strength of the creature, determine if it was something he could handle on his own or buy time until back up arrived. Drawing a kunai tagged with an explosive note he would leap onto a nearby roof for a better vantage point and then throw the weapon into the center of the hole, aimed right at the chest of the creature causing so much mayhem. He would give it a chance to impact and test its armor or reaction speed before forming a handseal and detonating the tag. Standing at the edge of the building he would call out to the creature, “What reason do you have for attacking this village? Can’t you see these people are just trying to live their lives in peace?” he shouted out, many of the villagers had packed up their belongings already and set out onto the road to other villages for safety. Still, some remained gathering belongings or being unable to leave due to sick or elderly or perhaps their loved ones were out of town for some reason or another when the spirit attacked and now they were left not knowing whether to wait or head off on their own. Still, these were all hardworking common people, that much was certain and even though they weren’t his own countrymen he hated to see them suffer needlessly and lose their homes because of this creature.

"...the desert sure looks different than I expected it to..." Isuzu took out his small sketchpad and, as he dashed across the shifting sands, sketched out a rough depiction of the dunes. His drawing was complete with casting shadows, and a sun located directly above. A cactus here or there, much like what he was seeing before him - along with more grass than he'd expected. This drawing looked a little rougher than his others though, his hands a bit shakier than normal today. Though he'd traveled extensively throughout the Fire Country, this was his first time venturing into a foreign land. Everything looked so exotic. Truth be told, he was only doodling now to help calm his nerves. The prospect of what could be facing him was daunting for the freshly re-instated genin.

His destination was a small village near the border of Wind Country to the South, a short journey for him to make. He'd been dispatched to the small village to assist another genin who'd been sent before him for scouting. Isuzu'd already gone over in his head countless scenarios of what sort of 'spirit' would be waiting for him upon his arrival. It wasn't long before he made it to the village in question, easily distinguishable by the mass of civilians crowded around the borders of the village, though nowhere near enough to be the entire populace. This meant that there had to be some additional people still in the village who needed rescue. The crowd as muttering loudly amongst themselves and seemed frightened. The genin made his way over to them, jumping atop a village at the edge of the village. He'd yet to turn his eyes to the spirit in the middle of the town or his fellow genin who was there, feeling he needed to instruct the scared villagers on what was occurring. "Everyone.." Isuzu spoke, though none but a few villagers noticed him. He cleared his throat and began to speak again. "EXCUSE ME!" This got the attention of most of the villagers now, and the murmuring from the crowd died down to a whisper. "P-P-PLEASE, STAY CALM. EVERYTH-THING IS UND..UND..UNDER CONTRO.." A loud explosion went off behind the genin, sending the vast majority of the villagers running for the dunes on the outskirts. A few villagers stayed behind, including some children, a few adults, and an extremely old man. Isuzu had to turn his attention to him to see what had caused the explosion. He saw nothing initially, though he could see houses beginning to give way and a large circumference of buildings in the middle that were seemingly destroyed.

"You're a shinobi, aren't you?" A frail voice could be heard from below, coming from the old man. Isuzu jumped down, viewing the humans before him as a priority to those he couldn't yet reach. "Y-yes. From the Lea-af Village." The man's bushy eyebrows covered his eyes, but Zuzu could tell it put the man at ease having a ninja there. "I thought as much. The Leaf Village has always treated us well." The older man winced and held his hip, drawing Isuzu's attention to the blood stain slowly spreading across his pants leg. "Mr, you're h-h-hurt. Please, al-allow m.." The old man held up his hand, steadying himself to stand firmly. "I've been through worse." He slightly wobbled again before again steadying himself. "Please, there are others who haven't made it out yet. As their leader, I won't..." The man let out a cough that showed he was weak - but it left Isuzu's eyes a bit teary. He moved forward to help the man, but the old man quickly held his hands out. His face was covered with wrinkles now, showing his conviction. "Didn't you hear me! Go help them! I said I'll be fine!" Isuzu stood paralyzed for a moment, thinking through his options. "Y-you there." Isuzu pointed towards one of the more able-bodied looking villagers, his eyes wide with fear. He pointed at himself inquisitively, to which Isuzu shook his head to affirm he was indeed speaking to him. "Help this ma-ma-man get to the others. Som-om-one there may be able to help." The younger man sprung into action, coming to aid the old man to walk on his injured side. "Come, Leader Oru. I've got you."

Isuzu turned and lept atop the village, making his way to the sinkhole to assess the damage. There was indeed a large sinkhole in the middle of the village, the edges slowly growing farther and farther apart as it grew. Across the way he could see another shinobi standing on the edge of the hole, he himself standing on a building to that boys left. That boy had the...things attention for now. He hesitated on what to do. "...Think Isuzu. Assess the situation. We have a large sinkhole with a spirit in it, an unknown number of villagers who may be injured, and a shinobi who appears to be engaging the creature. I have a duty to help my fellow shinobi, but there are still villagers who need my help as well. And they aren't able to fight back as he is..." Isuzu paused, knelt atop the building. He pondered for a moment before taking action. "HEY! I'm w-w-with Konoha. Think y-y-you can handle this thi-ing while I help the stragglers?" Isuzu was waving his head and speaking loudly so the boy could hear him.

He awaited confirmation before making his next move.

The creature seemed to be oblivious to the shinobi and his antics now as it seemed to be continuous moving in a clockwise manner near the bottom of the sink hole that was forming around it as each of its shapeless arms seemed to be devouring the nearby earth in some fashion and as it continued to do so it was slowly growing in size. As the kunai impacted it square in the chest the creature seemed to continue about its business then then in a puff of smoke and fire the tag exploded directly against he stone creature but the results were only a small crater formed in its upper torso. Even this type of attack seemed to go unnoticed by the strange earth based elemental creature as the small crater repaired itself quickly as the sink hole continued to grown but now at a slightly faster rate as the creature grew from its previous fifteen feet to now closer to twenty in only a short period of time. It was at this point that a few homes became victim to the sink hole and crashed down into the pit that was starting to reach a depth of nearly fifteen meters in the center and forty meters in width. For now the creature seemed to just want to continue absorbing the earth into its own body and didn't care about the humans in the area. Seemingly posing no true threat to them aside from its creation of the sink hole.

Though a few of the younger villagers, despite the warnings that had been given to them by the elders of the village, couldn't help but try to get a glance at this spirit that was slowly destroying their small village and it was at this point that young girl who was on the edge of the sink hole with her brother got a bit to close to the edge as the hole expanded drawing both of them tumbling down the angled edges of the sink hole that were to soft to be able to climb out as they finally found themselves at the bottom of the pit with the creature on the direct opposite side. The earth spirit continued to make its rounds now in a clockwise manner as it slowly but surely began to close in upon the two, it was uncertain if the absorption of the 'arms' would do the same to the human children or if the massive creature would simply crush them to death as it passed by that area....

The son of the Hokage narrowed his eyes as the creature simply took the strike of the kunai straight to its chest and was unphased even after the tag detonated. ‘What on earth is this thing?’ he wondered. Even when he called out to it there was no response. It seemed almost lifeless, having a very singular purpose with no regard to anything else. There had to be more to it than that though, right? The only other spirit he had encountered was a lizard with also seemed fairly simplistic but at least it talked and had regard for its own life, acting very much like one would expect of a large animal. This thing was completely different, vaguely humanoid it was still unlike anything he had ever seen before. The auburn-haired boy was considering the best course of action, noting with worry how rapidly the creature was gaining in size as well as judging the speed of its movement, when suddenly another shinobi addressed him. ‘Back up?!’ he realized. He looked over the other boy, assessing him to be roughly the same age and likely the same rank as himself. “I’m not sure there’s much point in attacking it, can’t seem to draw it awa…” it was at this moment that he heard the scream of the children falling into the pit. He had only turned his head away for a few moments to speak to the other genin but already the situation became perilous. “Dammit!” he muttered, springing into action without a second thought. “Cover me!” he stated to the boy on the adjacent rooftop, it was best to have someone as overwatch just in case the creature decided to attack.

He would have to take his chances in the pit of sand, leaping forward and sliding down the bank with admirable agility. Flowing chakra into the soles of his feet for good measure he would rush over to the children, “I’m a shinobi from Konoha, here to help. Hold on tight” he encouraged, attempting to quickly lift each of them, one on each shoulder before attempting to jump back up the side of the sand dune, running with chakra coated feet up the side if he couldn’t clear it in a single bound. From what he observed the creature moved at roughly the same speed as himself, perhaps slightly faster. If he was able to move up the side of the sand dune without too much difficult he should be able to get the children to safety.

Isuzu watched as the child began to fall into the pit, his body already taking steps forward without thinking. Once his fellow genin's voice told him to watch his back, he froze in his tracks and immediately dropped to one knee, drawing a kunai from his holster if needed and preparing for what may be necessary. While his teammate handled the children, Isuzu kept his eyes peeled on the enemy - mind churning as he watched the slow rotation. "On it." He smiled a bit to himself as he spoke without stuttering. That'd been happening more and more often lately, and even in these circumstances, he was able to find a little satisfaction in that. He regripped his kunai in a more ready throwing motion and allowed the explosive tag to hang down the back of it, dangling and twirling in the wind. The sound of the spirit twirling made it difficult to think.

"...Alright, let's take inventory of the situation. I'm pretty sure that thing is bigger than it was when I first arrived. I also see all the earth slowly giving way - but it's not going anywhere..." This was true. Seeing into the bottom of the pit, there was no real "loose" dirt laying around. At least, not enough to make up for how much must've caved in. "...Is it...eating it?.." Maybe eating wasn't the right word - but it was definitely doing something with all that earth. The genin watched closely as it made it's way around the circle, getting ever closer to the genin as his fellow shinobi attempted to save them. To beat this thing, they would need to know more. They'd need observations, experiments, etc. They needed to gauge its strengths and weaknesses through various forms of attack. The genin gritted his teeth a bit, as he was somewhat limited offensively - but skilled from long range, which could be a big asset here. To this point, the thing had shown no sign of intelligence beyond simply spinning in a circle.

"...Shit!...", the genin thought to himself, watching as that thing got closer and closer to the children. "Hurry!" He'd lost himself in thought and let it get a little to close for comfort.

The thing was getting a little too close for comfort for Isuzu, and though it looked like he'd get there safely, Isuzu was never one to take chances. Doing a quick amount of handseals as he lept from the top to get closer, he created a barrier to protect his comrade and the children from being crushed. "...Hopefully, it will stop it - or at least slow it down. Either way, whether it breaks it or not, I can get a general idea of it's strength..."

The creature appeared to continue as normal now as it moved around the growing sink hole moving closer and closer as it also continued to ignore all else but 'eating' the earth now as the genin managed to make it to the children and leap upwards. Wither or not he would be able to make it up the sandy slope would be up to him alone with the additional weight of the kids and even as he attempted to do so he would feel the group giving away as the creature's absorption rate seemed to be increasing as its size also increased. But one had to also wonder...was anything else increasing now? Seemingly oblivious to the barrier it actually ran head first into the barrier before stopping after running into it now tilting its faceless head from side to side as if questioning what it was. It's right arm that was almost shapeless before drew back and formed into a spear like cone before it drove the arm forward shattering the barrier in a single strike now. Almost shrugging its shoulders the creature's arm returned to normal as it then began to move once again only just slightly faster then before in its 'eating' of the earth as it grew nearly a meter as it did so.

Yozei heard his comrade call out as he scooped up the children, looking over his shoulder he saw the earth spirit closing in already. Without wasting any time, he held the children tight and leaped out of the way, stumbling a little as he impacted the sloped sand with more weight than he was used to. He didn’t fall but his feet sank in deep and he was starting to slide backward, looking again he saw a barrier form around the creature but wasn’t about to wait around to see how it responded. Channeling chakra of his own through his legs, feet and into the sand and dirt around him he would cause the earth to shift suddenly in the opposite direction, propelling him upwards as he steadied his center of gravity and braced for the movement. Right next to the edge of the sinkhole now he gently tossed each of the children to safety before making a final leap and pushing free from the sand before landing softly on the hard earth once more. Immediately he would go to the children, ensuring they were relatively unharmed. “You two need to get out of here,” he said as he formed handseals and an earth clone appearing identical to himself formed out of the ground. “Come with me, I’ll help you find your parents” the clone stated, holding out its hands to take hold of each of the children before leading them away. It couldn’t move too far away from the original, but he could at least get them out of the immediate area and hopefully find an adult to hand them off to.

Looking back down at the creature the true Yozei would assess the situation. “Good thinking with the barrier,” he said tilting his head back in the direction of his comrade up on the roof. “Doesn’t look like it did much though, there’s really no stopping this thing” he assessed, watching closely as it continued to move in circles. Turning, Yozei would leap up onto the safe rooftop as his fellow leaf genin. “Natsuki Yozei” he introduced with a handshake. Once the other genin introduced himself he would turn his attention back to the matters at hand. “Is it just me or is this thing getting bigger and faster?” he observed. “It’s entirely focused on consuming the ground and can repair any damage taken to it. For now, it’s not a direct threat to us but who knows how long it will keep this up for and what will happen when it had its fill…this might be too much for us to handle alone” he speculated. Perhaps the best course of action would be to help the civilians evacuate and report their findings back to headquarters so a team of Chunin or Special Jounin could be sent in.

Isuzu blushed a bit at the compliment. He wasn't used to receiving them - especially not for his battle prowess. He scratched the back of his head and let out a nervous laugh. "It w-was nothing." Ever the humble one, he was never good at accepting praise. He was strangely good at accepting criticism, in contrast. When the genin held out a hand, Isuzu looked at it and then back at Yozei. Being awkward and from an upper-class family, he hadn't had the opportunity to participate in many of these "common greetings". He'd seen it done a lot though, so he extended his hand, grabbing the others boys and squeezing is somewhat tightly. "Isuzu Hinoshi.", he said, taking the queue from Yozei to say his name when shaking hands.

As Yozei turned his attention to the dilemma, Isuzu did as well. His fellow genin suggested that it may be too much for them to handle; Isuzu tended to agree. He watched as the creature spun in circles, gathering earth and "merging" with it. It wasn't quite merging, but it wasn't quite eating either. He still hadn't found the right word for it. "Mayb-be.." He crouched down, one hand touching the roof and the other towards his face as he chewed on this thumbnail. He continued to watch the beast gobble up earth at a slightly faster rate than earlier. "...So this thing is feeding on the earth. We can't get an attack on it, since it's way more powerful than us. But what if..."

"Got it!" He reached for his belt pouch, pulling out his 5 pre-written explosive tags. "Yozei, I th-th-thin-think I have an idea. What i-i-if we put these tttags around the circum-cumference of the pit? It'll consume them.." Isuzu paused a moment, hoping his fellow genin would catch his drift and finish the sentence for him. If not, he'd fill him in later. Almost instantly, Isuzu threw a kunai with an explosive tag attached towards the pit wall, sticking it in the somewhat loose earth right before the creature made another pass. He'd let the creature consume it, then attempt to kai it.

It's time to experiment.

As the pair of shinobi made their introductions to one another, the creature had simply continued to ignore them now and went straight about its original business which was to continuously 'eat' the earth within the sink hole that it had created. Continuing on as if nothing had happened now walking in a counter clockwise fashion as its formless arms continued to scoop into the dirt causing it to be absorbed into the body of the elemental spirit now. If left alone it would continue to grow to a point at which the pair of young shinobi would have no chance at being able to defeat it, for they didn't know that the spirit had previously been a rather powerful spirit before its core was damaged in battle rendering it almost being killed. But having survived it was now working to diligently repair its core and old body back into battle ready shape and if that happened the shinobi wouldn't even have a chance to escape let alone fight back now.

The large earth based spirit didn't even seem to notice the pair any more or their attempts to stop it as the kunai lodged itself easily in the earthen wall with its explosive tag gently flowing back and forth from the sudden stop in momentum. Quickly the creature made its rounds until it had moved past the kunai and tag as they were both absorbed with the earth that they had been embeded in. Moments later the young genin used the Kai ability to detonate the tag and explosion of earth was seen as about halfway up the arm closer to the shoulder joint. It seems that when the earth was absorbed it was funneled up the arms and into the center of the creature before being used to strength and expand the creature's size. Thought he explosion only made a small hole in the creature before it began to rapidly repair and the creature only took a few seconds to stop and turn its faceless head towards the new wound. Almost seeming to shrug before starting to absorb earth at an increased rate when compared to before...

Yozei noticed that the other boy seemed a bit uncertain about shaking hands, at first he chalked it up to his overall nervous demeanor but when he heard his full name something clicked. ‘Hinoshi..Izuzu Hinoshi’ he repeated the name, their was something familiar about it. The truth was Yozei had only grown accustomed to shaking hands in recent years, it was a habit he had forced himself to adapt, an attempt to blend in and be accepted by those within Konoha for the truth was he too was born and raised as a noble. “Isuzu…unless I’m mistaken your father served my Grandfather” the man was no longer the current Daimyo, having been replaced two years ago but after another five years the Harukatsu would once again rule Fire Country, electing a member of their family to take up position as Daimyo once more. “My mother is Harukatsu Megami” he explained. He knew that the knowledge of his existence was not something that was widely talked about. While all in the upper circles knew that Megami was the former Daimyo’s daughter very few had any notion that she had birthed a bastard son. Ordinarily Yozei wouldn’t bring up the topic, it was a subject that was meant to burden him with shame though through his acceptance as a Konoha shinobi and becoming connected with his father he had come to learn to trust more in others and accept his past. “It’s an honor to meet you” he stated, bowing formally. Perhaps to Isuzu it seemed that he should be the one who owed the greater respect, though as a bastard Yozei had been sheltered from other noble children, kept within the palace to memorize the names of noble families that he would never be allowed to meet. To finally get that chance, even in this situation and especially now that they both found themselves as genin and equals, it was an exciting and fortunate circumstance.

As the genin sprang to action, Yozei too was considering possible tactics in case retreat wasn’t an option. Isuzu was the first to come up with a solid plan and as he drew the explosive tags, Yozei was already beginning to piece together the likely strategy he had in mind. He let the boy state his plan, seeing where it was going, “And then we blow it up from the inside” he finished. It was a good plan, certainly worth a shot. First he would observe the creature after Isuzu threw the first explosive tag. If it consumed it as planned Yozei would add his own firepower. It seemed to pay the tag no mind and so Yozei tossed in his 9 remaining tagged kunai, throwing them spread evenly across the entire sand pit. If the creature insisted on devouring the earth it was about to get a very unpleasant surprise.
