[Graded][Grass 1] Lay of the Land

Post by Ace Trainer » Fri Nov 15, 2019 12:32 pm

Kozaki stretched his arms, their long journey of running had finally come to a halt. Crouching, he bobbed up and down a few times, allowing all the tiny muscles in his legs to stretch. What a long run that had been. He wished someone would invent some sort of metal contraption that could move you long distances in short amounts of time so he didn't always have to run everywhere. Life as a shinobi was hard. Cracking his neck, he turned to Iwamaru, smirking before turning to look back over the valley that stood before them. It was early in the morning, the sun rising in front of them. There were a few buildings, not very many. This was clearly a small farming community, as were all the communities in this country. However, based on the information given to him, this community was home to an important individual within the grass country culture. Arguably the closest thing this region of the country had to a leader.

Their instruction had been clear, find him, gain his favor, then utilize him to be welcomed enough into the community that they'd be willing to let Iwagakure and Kirigakure build outposts in their villages. Kozaki wondered why the outposts were being incorporated into the villages, instead of elsewhere. His first thought was that in doing so they would have supply-chains coming into the villages, allowing them to help enrich the people and provide them with anything they may need. The more sadistic part of Kozaki considered that having an outpost within these people's village meant if the other villages tried to attack, they'd have to try and discern the people from the shinobi. Killing random internationals would certainly be an act that would gain a lot of opposition from people all over the world, so, it seemed win-win to Kozaki. Of course there was also the possibility that simply having outposts within their communities would be helpful in maintaining a feeling of integration.

"Well, we've got all of 10 buildings to start at. Did they tell you where our best shot was? What this guy looked like? Anything liek that?", he asked his comrade. Whenever Iwamaru was ready they could head down into the farming valley.

[Grass 1] Lay of the Land

Post by ShinobiTruth » Sun Nov 17, 2019 5:38 pm

Iwamaru, unlike Kozaki, had quickly become accustomed to traveling. Having to travel to other lands in short periods of time had actually done wonders for his stamina levels, and it didn't hurt that he was also looking forward to visiting other places. Maru had within him an intense, if not cautious, curiosity for the world outside, especially ever since he'd been promoted to chuunin. Plus... considering what had just come to pass at home, having a mission to focus his mind on was a nice return to routine that he felt he desperately needed. He'd jumped on the opportunity to work with Kozaki when it arose, albeit for selfish reasons.

As they stood at the crest of a valley, Iwamaru scanned the surroundings. It was strange to see a village left out in the open like this. It was clear that they either didn't face many marauders or bandits like most small, rural villages had to face, or they were very confident in the skills of their guards and warriors. There were farms, herded animals, and rice paddies near the walls of the valley, and it was clear just by the grass alone that the soil was incredibly fertile. Iwamaru was curious to know how they endured floods. He could only see the tops of the houses from here. These seemed like pointless details to some, but oftentimes, paying close attention to the hard work of those living in the place you seek to do business with and showing that you could be perceptive was a sign of respect. Maru suspected that such observational skills would be necessary for a mission like this. This wasn't a smash 'n grab, nor was it a mission of sabotage. This was diplomacy, and its rules of war were different from those he was accustomed to.

Iwamaru shook his head. "The person we're trying to contact is pretty reclusive, by what local information tells us. He normally wears a fairly ornate headdress of some sort, but other than that, he could be in any one of those buildings," he explained. "Then again, this isn't an infiltration mission. This is a diplomatic mission for us right now. We shouldn't rule out more simple solutions, like asking. Even if the locals don't open up right away, we might be able to curry favor from them by assisting with some sort of menial task. Maybe they've had their own run-ins with bandits and need help chasing them out once and for all or something."

Iwamaru spoke, and Kozaki nodded his head in understanding. Limited information, but it seemed perhaps the lack of information was a product of not needing a huge quantity of information in order to be successful. Iwamaru was right, contrary to what Kozaki's kirigakure instincts told him, he wouldn't have to think about this in an abstract way. They were simply looking for someone, as casually as Kozaki would in any other scenario. Placing his hands in his pocket, Kozaki began down the hill into the valley, assuming Iwamaru was following him, he began thinking out loud.

"They said these people are pretty chill, so I reckon you're right. We just gotta ask around and see who they consider to be their boss or whatever is I guess? We're just kids, so even if they know we're shinobi they prolly won't think much of it, I bet, huh ?", they'd quickly approach the village, where Kozaki would stop on just the outskirts, "Do we wanna tell 'em we're big bad shinobi looking to high jack this place for our own gain or? You know, we just gotta find the dude and get him to like us. I think maybe lying isn't too great of an idea.", a surprisingly accurate observation from Kozaki. Perhaps the best way to get on a good foot with this guy would just be to be honest.

Surely, as they got close, however, a woman would be walking through one of the farm lands on the same edge of the village they stood, her eyes locked onto the pair. Kozaki would grin wide and wave at her, "Hey lady! We're looking for someone!", he said cheerfully. Hopefully he'd receive this positively.

The lady was clearly unsettled by the visual of Kozaki covered in tattoos. It seemed that Kozaki understood that there was no need for deception in this mission. The more honest they were about their intentions, the better the two would likely fare in their endeavors. Despite this, his overt appearance would be a barrier to their overall objectives. Kozaki was generally speaking a pretty outgoing guy, but in more reserved cultures, such as this, it might actually work against them. Iwamaru tapped Kozaki on the shoulder and gave him a nod. "Let me take point on this part. Your skills with words and reasoning will probably be better used with the leader of this place, but for the commonfolk, I might be more well-suited," he explained.

Stepping forward, Iwamaru approached calmly and offered a smile and a deep bow, eyes closed and head forward to convey deep respect. "Good day to you, ma'am," he offered. "I hope you can forgive our intrusion upon your work, but we are travelers, coming in peace. We wish to speak to the leader of your humble village. Would you know where we might find him?"

The woman was taken off-guard by the guard, though she still eyed the two suspiciously. "For what reason do you seek to speak to the Elder? You do not wear clothing of the common people. We seek no harm from the outside, traveler," she contested, wary of their presence.

Iwamaru cursed inwardly. 'She's perceptive. I need to consider wearing different clothing the next time we take a mission like this,' he thought to himself. Still, this was not enough to deter him. "And I promise you, we wish no harm upon you or anyone in this country. Its people have treated us kindly ever since we arrived. On the contrary, we seek a deeper relationship with your people so that we may both benefit," he stated. This was technically true. The guards they had run into at the border, despite being suspicious of them, had let them pass and had treated them well. They'd even given them refreshments while discussing their terms for entry into the country.

Her eyes narrowed, but Iwamaru could tell that she was slowly conceding. She was ultimately a good-natured person, and she would not turn these ones away if it could benefit others in her village. "May the spirits curse your tongue if you deceive us, traveler," she warned.

Iwamaru didn't miss a beat. "May I forever be condemned to face their wrath if I do," he replied.

Nodding, she hoisted her basket over her head. "Very well. Come with me."

Kozaki's lip curled as Iwamaru suggested that Kozaki lacked the je ne se quoi to handle this interaction. How rude. Kozaki could be plenty tactful if he needed to be, he was just trying to be friendly. His crossed his arms, his bright yellow eyes peering off into the distance in annoyance as Iwamaru interacted with her. What a rude way for Iwamaru to go about it. Him and his fancy pants. So annoying, Kozaki considering just intervening at that point just to make a point, but if it was going to compromise the mission, probably not the best move to make right there. He sighed, listening in to the conversation. At least Iwamaru seemed to be convincing her. She gestured for them to follow, finally, and Kozaki smiled, whatever, it had worked, no point in starting a ruckus over it.

Following her dutifully, he listened with a smile as she began talking.

"Now listen here you two, hes an elder. Lots of respect for them in these parts. Convened with the ancestors, knows the ways of the spirits. Don't go in there acting all wild.", she insisted.

Kozaki smirked. Wild? What on earth could she mean by that? He quickly caught himself, going back to a straight face. But couldn't help but imagine walking into a building and immediately setting it on fire or throwing food at the ceiling. All sorts of ways to go wild. As they entered the village she took them quickly to their destination. A smaller building, with lots of ornate decorations on the walls and such.

"In there.", she directed. "Let them know I guided you. I just go by Naimuri. That should get you part of the way.", she offered before walking away.

Kozaki frowned, part of the way? He turned to Iwamaru, gesturing towards the door. Stone man wanted to take the lead, Kozaki would let him.

He sensed Kozaki's annoyance at his interjection. It was something they'd have to hash out later. He suspected that his partner took his action as an insult, and Iwamaru would rectify that once everything was settled, apologizing if he must. Had Kozaki approached the woman, with his physical appearance, he wasn't certain how smoothly the initial conversation would have gone. To be frank, the number of tattoos and inkings on his body would have probably been something of note even in the shinobi villages, let alone out here, where they were considered as wizards, shaman, and even gods or demons. People's prejudices based on first impressions were strong, and while Kozaki was clearly a competent shinobi and had a quick wit, Iwamaru knew that it would be easier for Kozaki to use his talents if Maru smoothed the road for him first.

Iwamaru followed their guide, Naimuri, and paid close attention to every word coming out of her mouth. His eyes narrowed at the mention of knowing the ways of the spirits. Was this perhaps a religious tradition these people followed? His mind momentarily drifted to Tenkujutsu, but such a thing seemed almost impossible outside of the villages, where they didn't even have access to chakra. How would they have divined a way to separate spiritual energy from physical when they couldn't even use the combination of the two in its most rudimentary form? Iwamaru gave the building a once over, making certain to take special note of the decorations, trying to memorize the most noteworthy details as quickly as he could. Often times, things of historical or cultural importance could be found in these drawings and etchings. Every little bit of information they had would be important in their discussions with the Elder.

Maru also caught Naimuri's odd choice of words. She implied that the journey to the elder would be longer than they anticipated. Perhaps making it to the Elder implied some sort of test had to be passed first? "Keep your wits about you, partner," he warned quietly, stepping inside carefully. "I'm pretty sure you caught it too, but her choice of words there was... odd."

Kozaki followed Iwamaru with caution, practically tip-toeing into the room. The building was relatively small, but upon entering Kozaki would find that the internal structures of the building made it seem far larger than it actually was. Vaulted ceilings meant the room they were in filled the entire skeleton of the building. Additionally, when they entered they'd find themselves directly in an entry way with several steps downward, the building getting bigger by going into the ground as well. They were surrounded by candles, hundreds of them. Ornate masks and decorations covered the walls, corner to corner. Kozaki had barely gotten time to really take in the room when a figure moved in front of them, blocking their view.

Instinct set in, but it was hard to even feel aggressive with the smell of incense filling his nose, this room felt so peaceful. The black bands around his arm bulged, surging to move towards his hand before relaxing and laying flat against his skin instead as he took a step back. The person before them was big, but not massive. And as his eyes brought in their features he understood they were young, and dressed in robes. As sudden as they arrived, they were certainly peaceful.

He took a step back again, back up the steps they'd just walk down, and gestured towards Iwamaru again, "Hey there.", he said with a small smile. Yeah, maybe Iwamaru would be better at taking the lead here.

The smell of incense was the first Iwamaru picked up on as the pair entered in the room, only seeing the masks a bit after Kozaki had caught sight of them. The density of the shadows in this building... it’s a prime area for an ambush, and the incense dulled his senses. Red flags started going off in his mind only too late.

A tall, monolithic figure appeared suddenly before Kozaki, and Iwamaru cursed mentally, stepping forward to back his partner up, but the Kiri nin’s assessment was different, causing Iwamaru to skid to a halt. Kozaki instead released his jutsu and beckoned him forward, seeming to think he was more well-suited to this situation. Taking a deep breath to calm himself and exhaling, he walked up to the elder and bowed respectfully. ”Greetings. We come in peace. Naimuri led us here to speak with you. We wish to foment good relations with your people,” he declared, choosing his words carefully.

He couldn’t declare an outright alliance. He didn’t have the authority for that. But improved relationships between the Rock, the Mist, and the people of Grass? He was fairly certain he wouldn’t be stepping out of bounds on that.

Kozaki dropped down, sitting on the stairs rather casually while Iwamaru handled this. Foment? Was that even a word, Kozaki had never heard it before. It sounded made up. Iwamaru wouldn't get very far making up words like that, Kozaki thought. But, he shrugged, Iwamaru was sure his temperment would handle this better, so Kozaki would wait. His weapon had slowly formed a full sheath around his arm, Kozaki had made the same observations as Iwamaru, this wasn't exactly a prime position for either of them to be in, and if it came to a fight they'd have all their senses dulled in a terrain they were unfamiliar with. It was best to be prepared.

The man sighed deeply, "Naimuri always welcoming in travelers so easily. Her will is good, her spirit kind. Who is we and who do you seek here. This is a place of mourning, and of prayer. Not some random pit stop for travelers of anykind. Even those seeking favor.", it quickly became apparent that the man here before them was not who they had come to speak with, he wasn't the elder. In fact as their eyes adjusted they'd find that thei ndividual they were speaking to was pretty young, not as young as them, but certainly not old enough to be considered 'the elder', the safe presumption was that he was some sort of disciple, which would make sense that he'd intercepted them so quickly. Kozaki had been tilting his head side to side, trying to peer around the enormous fellow to see the rest of the room.

He could tell someone else was in there, they were casting a long shadow against the far wall. But either they weren't paying attention to the two newcomers, or they hadn't noticed. Kozaki was certainly intrigued.

Iwamaru cursed mentally. He searched for the words that he suspected might lead to the most beneficial resolution for everyone. ”We admit and apologize for our ignorance. We are unfamiliar with the customs and traditions of your people. We wish to cure ourselves of our ignorance. ‘We’ refers to my compatriot and I and our respective villages. We wish to speak to the one known as the Elder and build a closer bond between our peoples. We seek to prove our peoples worthy of that kinship.”

Iwamaru kept his head bowed as a sign of respect. It seemed that their presence in this particular place was unwarranted. Perhaps showing deference and respect would make them more understanding and more willing to at least point the pair in the right direction.

"Kirigakure no Sato, the mighty.", Kozaki interjected when Iwamaru referenced to him and his village. He'd ought to say something, right? There wasn't much more for him to say, beyond that, so he stayed quiet after that. His eyes scanned the room still, the yellow orbs inspecting every little detail he could find. With not much success in this, he sighed, his shoulders shrugged down as he leaned even further against the steps he was sitting on.

The disciple or whatever he was seemed uninterested in Kozaki and his eyes stayed squarely fixed on Iwamaru and what he had to say. This kid seemed very respectful, but he was young. It struck him as unusual that the villages would send such small representatives, perhaps the two of them were lying? Or perhaps they wanted to appear undaunting, it was hard to tell. "Well, he is not here.", the disciple responded abruptly. "At least his mind isn't. He has been in prayer for 4 days. Mourning the souls that have passed in recent days. You will have little success in convening with him." the man stepped aside, gesturing across the room. At the opposite wall was a man, sitting cross legged, his back facing them. He seemed to be projecting an aura, but was otherwise unmoving and unremarkable. The disciple having stepped aside seemed to be indicating that they two could approach....and do what they could to intercede on the elder's prayer.

Iwamaru could tell that disciple was doing his best to protect the Elder. The Elder himself, of course, was also a curious figure. For one who hadn't spoken a word since they entered or even moved, the power that emanated from him seemed palpable. It didn't seem like chakra (that would have been an incredible shock to the chuunin), but it seemed that it was an energy that Iwamaru had seen before. 'This village... does it somehow have a tradition of Tenkujutsu? I've never heard of such a thing outside of the Great Villages,' he thought to himself. The notion that, through religious traditions, a village had learned how to harness spiritual energy didn't seem entirely unlikely. Iwamaru bowed to the disciple and approached the Elder. The seemingly ancient figure would not move or even acknowledge his presence.

Iwamaru was vexed. He wasn't certain how to best win the Elder's trust. The disciple had stated that there were people who had passed away recently. Were they all of natural causes? Or were they violently taken? He wasn't sure. But when someone was mourning, the first step was obvious. Lowering himself to sit formally on both knees, Iwamaru bowed deeply to show respect for the Elder. "Great Elder... my compatriot and I wish to express our deepest sorrow and sympathies at the losses your people have suffered," he stated, calmly and firmly. "We have traveled far to speak with you, but we wish to offer whatever aid we can in this time of grief for your people. What might we do to help the souls of those you have lost find peace in the afterlife?"

For a long while, neither moved and neither spoke. Iwamaru continued bowing, not moving from his spot. In order to earn their trust, they had to truly believe that Iwa and Kiri were looking out for their best interests, not merely spitting enticing prose. The silence hung for so long that Iwamaru had thought he might have failed. Finally...

"...Their souls... seek justice... Find those responsible... and grant them their eternal rest..."

Iwamaru slowly raised his head, and even the disciple seemed genuinely surprised. Approaching Iwamaru, he confirmed what Iwamaru was hoping had happened. "The Elder has given you an opportunity to prove your good intentions," he explained. "The bandits who attacked us reside on the far end of the valley, where the grasses give way to harsh, barren land. We are not the only village that has suffered, merely the latest. Bring us the pendant of the leader as proof of his execution, and he will agree to speak with you further."

Iwamaru rose to his feet and bowed to the disciple. "Justice will be served for your people. I swear it," Iwamaru replied before moving for the exit. Nodding to his partner, he said simply, "We have our objective Kozaki. Let's go complete it."

That had been easier than he expected. Iwamaru was certainly quick and to the point. Having had such ease of success, Kozaki shrugged, good enough for him. Jumping to his feet, he nodded towards the disciple See ya in a bit big guy he said with a grin. Turning towards the door he walked alongside Iwamaru. ”Bandits? You follow my lead now, yeah?” he asked with a grin. Fighting was definitely more Kozaki’s area of mischief.
