The last glimmers of sunlight were setting upon the frozen wastelands when a blood curdling scream filled the dry, cold air.

Hayate was first on the scene, coming down upon the earth like a lightning bolt from the heavens, assessing the situation during his descent. As his eyes wandered the ground below his heart weight heavy, for a young Chuunin lay in a pool of blood, her entrails torn out. The crimson red color of her life force splattered all over the white snow... drenched her white flack jacket and poncho. It was a grizzly sight made only worse by the contrasting colors. Landing, Hayate knelt down, picking the young woman up into his arms. She was gasping. Wounds like this could not possibly be healed in time- least not by him. As he looked her up and down the smaller details became apparent. Her legs had claw wounds- but not those consistent with a bear or typical beast.

The girl in his arms, he reached for her hand with his right hand, linking them to support her. "I know it hurts my child... we will avenge you." he said as he felt the young chuunin's grip strength dissipating, their eyes staring into each other as if they were peering into each others souls. Before long the girl went still and her eyes cold. Anguished, Hayate's left hand moved to her eyelids, closing them with enduring, slow grace.

It seems the rumors of the fishing wastelands were true: a night of horror was now upon them. As the Jounin, Chuunin, and other members of his camp arrived, he would wave for a group of Chuunin to take care of their fallen comrade.

"Nightfall is upon us and the rumors are true. Prepare the camps, activate all defenses and traps. We will draw them to us and destroy them; and those who flee as the sun rises we will root out down to their very caves they sleep and destroy them."

Haru walked with a heavy step to bear witness to the carnage that had been wrought upon this desolate snow and wind blasted land. The girl's body had caught his eye as well though he made no comment at the pain. All he did was allow a bit of energy to pass through him, and catch the girl's eyes. There would be no saving her, but at least he could ease her passing.

"Sure."

It was all he said as the orders were barked, but he ignored them largely. Instead Haru set to gathering stones to create a cairn for the poor departing soul. It didn't take him long, but long enough. Once done he went about gathering more to create a firepit, then larger ones to use as a fortifications if needed. Finally, he began felling trees, what few could be found, to create a fire pit. Out in the harsh winds that cut to the bone, heat was a bit more of a priority.

Eiko frowned as she stood by Hayate's side, looking out over the snowy landscape as he barked out orders. The fishing wastes... a truly barren land with seemingly no value to anyone, entirely incapable of sustaining life, the only denizens being monsters that according to rumor only rose once the sun went down. Why exactly had they come here? Sure expanding was one of the goals in the war, recent news having made that very clear, but there was much more valuable territory that they could be working towards, potential allies to be gained.

And yet they had instead found themselves in the Fishing Wastes... for reasons as of yet unknown to her, instead being known only to her father. She wanted to believe he had a plan but no matter how hard she thought about it, nothing at all came to mind. "Dad, surely this land isn't worth the trouble? You of all people should understand that we can't afford to be wasting soldiers like this when we could be working to gain allies or even beefing up the relations that we already have. I don't understand, what is the goal here?" Eiko didn't go to help with preparations right away, instead turning to stare at Hayate, hands on her hips as she dared to question his methods.

Arashiyama Etsuko prided herself on her ability to keep upbeat and cheerful no matter the situation, but as she arrived to see the gore of a young woman in the arms of the Raikage even she found herself without a way to even crack a smile. She watched the scene laid out before her passively and could only sigh quietly. She approached as he began to give orders, and though on a normal day the young woman carried her own anger towards the man before her the only anger simmering in her mind right now was for whoever had killed this young Chuunin so brutally. She knew some medical ninjutsu but knew what little she could do was useless to the young woman now.

She turned to follow commands, to find a target for her seething rage when she suddenly heard the words of another woman that caused her feet to falter. In her own surprise she paused and turned to see Eiko questioning Hayate and couldn't help a momentary snort and a smile. 'So someone does question him... good.' she thought to herself.

She turned away after smirking directly at Eiko herself and went to see what help she could be at the camp, Ranton chakra crackling across her fingertips.

Tenshi as the last to arrive to the party. He saw the group stood around what looked like a puddle of dark mess from above, and so he descended on his levitating frisbee. When he was low enough to simply hop off without any risk of damaging himself, he did so with a gentle thump upon landing next to the Raikage. His head. Covered with the hood he had began wearing at the start of the war, shook at the sight of the young chuunin who had been ripped apart by some beast living in the wilderness. It showed a few things to him, the fact that they were not alone, and regardless of how experience someone thinks they are, there may always be something stronger out there and vigilance is key.

As his follow comrade began building a cairn for the dead, Tenshi raised his hand and along with it came tiny particles of metal from the ground. He directed them towards the built cairn and began fortifying what his comrade had already built. Then the short speech from their leader came, and Tenshi simply nodded, accepting the mans commands. Then a voice of opposition came from no other than the mans daughter. Tenshis glare aimed at the girl, he couldn’t believe she would question him in a situation like this. But regardless what happened now, he had his orders, he just wanted to see how this would pan out, taking note of the reaction from Etsuko. ’Looks like the Raikage is gaining some opposition… Not good.’ These thoughts bounced around his mind as he witnessed the crackling around Etsukos fingers.

Hayate nodded solemnly, bowing his head slightly to the brother of Akino who quickly went to work in taking care of their dead. The body would eventually need to make it home, but for now, the best they could do was get it out of the open where the beasts could have there fill of it. For the first time in a long time Hayate's mind drifted to Akino- no doubt due to the presence of his brother. Had Akino been here the Chuunin would be alive. With the Starforce he was a ferociously powerful tank and an even more incredible healer... Hayate on the other hand was nothing more than an impeccably sharp spear. Starforce, for all it's powers and enhancements it bestowed upon him only made him more of a weapon... more of a lethal assassin. The Raikage frowned at his daughters sudden rebellious streak, pausing and taking a deep breath before replying.

"Our empire must grow but I refuse to do so on the corpses of Minor Country shinobi like the rest of the world is right now." Hayate said looking to each of the Jounin around him. "The fishing wastes does having fishing resources and food to maintain us. Mainly however, it has a rather large shoreline and acts as an entry place into this new continent which Kirigakure is vying for."

This was purely a strategic choice to be here.

"As per my discussions with Lord Kazekage and Lord Hokage our mission was to secure this new continent and sweep downwards from this shore into water country. This continent- these shores... are to act as a staging ground for the entire might of the Lightning Country forces. Every day Rock and Water put more pressure on our allies and we hope to alleviate that by splitting their attention elsewhere beyond the western fronts."

He rubbed his chin gently as he looked at the camp. Everyone was quickly getting to work with the fortifications.

"Until now these 'beasts' were nothing but a rumor, in which it was stated that they only come once in millennia. Given no resistance and fear of this location, we thought it was the ideal staging ground for our campaigns in the north and eventually in water country. There would be no competition or enemies to fight tooth and nail in battles of attrition for this position."

He wouldn't go on any further than that; he felt no need to justify his strategical decisions given his track record of ending wars. With that, he would channel chakra into his body as aAmyriad of elemental hands would appear around him- he would have one set go to each of the trusted Jounin at the camp.

Earth to Eiko. Lightning to Etsuko. Water to Haru and Wind to Tenshi.

In total there was 6 camps spread out among the clearings in the forest, and 2 at the nearby swamps. Fortifications, mainly hastily constructed palisade backed up by Doton and whatever elements were available, for the most part encircled every camp and pathways between them. The sky's above were being watched by Skyguards. This was their first offensive, foreign deployment in centuries. In the worst case scenario they would play a key role in bombing the mythical hordes of monsters so the group could escape to the boats, otherwise for now they were intel.

Hayate tapped the fuuin near his ear, activating the comm link and relaying orders to the other camps: Syaoran was closest to them, forming the northern wall of their settlement. The shoreline to the west was protected by Igata and a few Black Ops agents. Senji was leading a large group to the East- perhaps the largest group of military might and also the group facing the forests, caves, and bulk of the fishing wastes. This would likely be the main battlefield. A clone of Hayate was of course there with Senji too.

Finally, to the south was the camp with Hayate. It was the most under-gunned but the one anticipated to be a bit lighter. Their strategy here was the quality of the individuals holding the line rather than the numbers. Beyond our heroes, there would be a few squads of Chuunin and Jounin. No Genin would be here for this brutal undertaking.

To the center of all the camps were two camps of support groups for everyone to retreat through.

They would need to defend things until dawn.

There'd be a nice quiet silence for roughly twenty minutes until the horns of the Sky Guard sounded.

The giant vole-like humanoid creatures were upon them, crashing against the palisade. Before long, the palisades were meaningless as tunnels opened up into the center of the camp and the monsters poured through. Hayate went to work quickly as he showered the ground unceremoniously in his chakra and turned the tunnels and very earth the voles came from into their graves, his hands clapping together as the earth beneath their feet rumbled.

Still, some made it through the holes and some made it over the palisade. While the Raikage focused on keeping the ground beneath everyone's feet safe with Kinesis the group would need to deal with everything coming from outside the camp walls.

In her immediate vaccnity, Eiko and Etsuko would find 3 beasts of varying size who would suddenly fix their attention on her.

Tenshi would find 1 beast rip through the ground suddenly, seemingly having just barely made it past the initial onslaught by the Raikage. It would grab onto his ankle.

Haru would be relatively safe for now, but nearby a group of Chuunin would be engaged with four beasts, one of which had already managed to mangle a chuunins arm stopping any hope the chuunin had of sealing a ninjutsu.

Haru got the fire going, quietly waiting for the situation to unfold. He spoke not except for the odd answering grunt or single word response. Instead he chose to stoke the fire for the brief period of time that all was quiet on the shoreline front. However, it wasn't to last. The horn sounded and the large man had to take to his feat. When it hit, it hit hard though. Before he had time to react the strange creatures were already tunneling through the earth to strike from below. The palisade had already fallen as they struck from the sides. If these monster were to start falling from above, this battle was already lost. The skyguard, a group he had once aspired too, did their job, at least that wouldn't happen.

As the Kage's hands manifest at his side Haru already saw what his choices were. Offense wasn't his need, he'd be on wall duty. He raised the two massive doors and looked around, assessing the situation. Noting Hayete had already stopped them from coming from below, he looked for other targets. The open holes in the walls were appealing, but the group of younger shinobi proved a more pressing issue. Pounding sand he raced to them, expecting the others to handle themselves. He allowed the energy to flow through him as he raced to the wounded chuunin and placed his back to them, planting the shield in front to push back the oncoming hoards. His back slammed into the wounded warrior as the pink whips proved his plan, followed by another charge of power and a pulse into them.

"Stand behind and cover the sides. If any of you have arty, use it. Otherwise, backs to mine, move with me and counter strike. Do NOT range out."

After a set of hand seals, the Kyoukan family member will channel a generous amount of chakra into a specific tether delivering a pulse of healing chakra. This chakra is capable of healing small wounds or less instantly. Larger wounds like open gashes will gain a faster regenerative property allowing them clot and prevent further damage instantly and to heal completely within 2 posts.

D - Tai (Stance)
The practitioner anchors their shield in front of themselves and braces it at a slight upward angle from behind to present a wall against attacks. The shield redirects the brunt of any force into the ground while the individual holds it in place. This leaves the user vulnerable from all sides but directly in front. However, the user can only block impacts up to their strength, any greater and they will be bowled over as if nothing happened. However, if they block the impact they will take no damage as all the force will be directed into the ground.

The fishing wastes were true to their name. It wasn’t a pretty area, everything looked dead and the smell was awful. It didn’t bother Tenshi even a little. This was what a real battle ground should be, already destroyed. It did not matter if things got out of hand around here. Every single shinobi could go all out and not worry about the destruction they would cause to the land itself, all that mattered was the preservation of life, Kumogakures and its allies. And so, when the Raikage was giving orders, Tenshi listened attentively, and was surprised when he gave his pair of elemental hands to every single Jounin there. Tenshi got wind, he was skilled in it’s use a little, but had never focussed in that area as much as his others. But, he accepted them gratefully. Any aid in what was to come could not be denied.

Now that the orders have been dished out, Tenshi tried to relax. His face hidden behind his mask, he stood in place concentrating on nothing but his breathing. ’In… Out…’ his mind went on and on, until he heard the great horn of the skyguard. His eyes opened after twenty minutes of peaceful meditation and began to scan the area. The centre of the camp had already opened up with the voles erupting from within. The Raikage was a step ahead, flooding the area with his chakra and bringing the eruption to a swift end. Some, however, got through and one was onto Tenshi, grabbing a hold of his ankle, immobilising him and putting nearly enough pressure on it to make it feel like it wwas about to snap. Tenshi acted instinctively; his right hand moved to his kunai holster, withdrawing three kunai - one of which had an explosive tag wrapped around it - which he then aimed at the voles, head, mid-torso, and hips. By channeling chakra into his hand, he used Jikiton to propel the projectiles into the creature.

If successful, Tenshi would jump back a few feet and activate the explosive tag which would hopefully be jammed in the voles head, causing it to explode and leaving scraps scattered around the area.

Eiko tilted her head at Hayate's reply, somewhat understanding though she still wondered if there might not be a better way. Even with all the possible benefits this was still a very dangerous move. She felt better knowing that the Hokage and Kazekage were on the same train of thought but her concerns wouldn't be fully alleviated until this was all over. "I suppose, but this is still largely unexplored territory... We're putting a lot of people at risk being out here. I hope you're right and that it ends up being worth it." she responded, though after that fell silent, Hayate making it clear the discussion was over as he began channeling chakra.

With a sigh she stepped away to join the other Jounin, accompanied by a pair of earthen hands. "Dad, why must you be so stubborn?' she spoke under her breath, letting out another sigh. She did love the man but sometimes she couldn't really follow what was going through his mind.

Oh well, there was no use in worrying about it now. All that was left to do at this point was wait for the signal
They weren't left waiting for long, the horn soon sounded and with it came a horde of horrendous creatures, Eiko's eyes growing wide at the sight. "Oh dear, so it seems the stories really are true. They never mentioned anything quite like this though..." she quietly spoke, taking a moment to shake away any fear or disgust she felt. This was no time for that, right now fear would do nothing but get them killed.

Soon enough she spotted a group of creatures approaching, immediately leaping back and launching into a series of hand seals. On completion a pot hole would form underneath the group, in hopes of at least tripping them up.

Regardless of success, she would dash off to the side forming another set of seals, an earthen spike shooting towards the largest of the group as she stayed on the move. She didn't know what to make of them so for now, keeping her distance was the safest bet.

By time the creatures broke through, Etsuko was grinning wickedly almost as if crazed. She took a deep breath as she heard orders barked about and screams echo across the vast spaces between the camps. Chaos appealed to her and bred a sort of high within her mind, creating a rush that she reveled in. It showed in her expression. She saw Eiko moving already and laughed as her hands moved into seals. "Come to me, dearies...." she said playfully as the spirals of Ranton wrapped around her body. "Can a creature of rumored horror feel despair? I want to see..."

More seals, a wicked grin and a cackle from the woman's lips as Ranton erupted from the ground around one of the vole-like creatures. She had truly meant it when she said she wanted to see if she could force one to feel despair. If successful she would trap one and pull it to the ground within the Ranton Prison before checking on Eiko's success with her techniques. After all, for her desire to play with her targets she wasn't one to leave her comrades unprotected either.

Hayate was still hard at work trying to keep fewer of the creatures from showing up. His kinesis was an integral weapon to holding back the monsters- and sometimes executing them before they could exit. Still, though, monsters would get through especially ones from outside the camps and the Emperor's radius.
Haru would valiantly come to the aid of the chuunin as they pulled their wounded and moved behind him. His tethers would soothe the immediate pain of the injured chuunin, who was almost in a delirious state from the previous pain. His eyes widened in shock as he mouth and mumbled. Lord... Akino? His teammates encircled him and with their backs to Akino got to work as their body was covered in stone armor. They'd do their best to fight the incoming beasts but they'd be doing nothing but tanking. If Haru didn't help soon, they wouldn't hold out for long.

At least his shields dug into the ground to the front provided the group some cover.
Tenshi's attack would work great. Almost too great. As the beasts bounded for him his tagged kunai would lodge itself into a beast killing it instantly. It's momentum however was quite strong and, with the tag in it, it would hurdle dangerously close to Tenshi. He'd need to either cancel his seal or defend himself from the shrapnel. Worse, other beasts would come to his side. There'd be three circling him.
Eiko's pothole would work. The relatively low intelligence creature was powerful but not bright. It'd trip on the pothole only for the spike to go straight through it's midsection. There'd be more where it came from as they climbed over the corpse of the other beast and headed for Eiko. She was smart to keep her distance but there'd only be so many ways she could run as the camp began to be overrun.
Etsuko's wicked grin would be a point of worry for Hayate or the others if they had enough time to even think about it. In the chaos of it all though it would be lost; and those near her who would hear the sounds of ranton would likely feel happier to hear it than the shrill screams of the demons. As for the young woman question- the creatures hadn't known despair until they met her Ranton. It would be pulled to the ground repeatedly shocked as thee Ranton cut into its flesh and held it in place. A quicker death would have been its wish, though, it couldn't really think that deeply beyond pain bad, killing good.

During this all another beast would make it's way to Etsuko and attempt to strike her, only for the ranton to discharge into its body as it howled in pain, moving back defensively and circling her as one more beast showed up. They were acting like any old animal would in a shock trap- still in it for the hunt but suddenly a little hesitant to lunge.

Haruno looked around at the situation and began to think his way through it. The ground was stable as Hayete was shoring up that defensive angle. However, without those walls to hold there would be a near infinite stream of monsters. He began to analyze how the others were fighting, noticing that they were each offensive in their rights. As one of the monsters bounced off his shields Haru began to formulate a plan. Physically grabbing the pair of hands that Hayete had provided he put them on the shield's grips, attempting to lock them in place to cover that angle. Assuming that would work, he no withdrew his chain and extended its length to cover the chuunin from another angle. He needed just a fraction of a second more to formulate an idea. And he got it as the chain began to whip about and make space for him to think.

Haru shouted with a booming voice, attempting to be heard over the din of battle. "Someone get us elevated! A pillar of rock, wings, a gust of wind, something. Get us above these things and we can fire down on them while only covering one angle." He turned to his chuunin charges now, analyzing the armor. "Do it here! We'll defend! You too Hayete!"

The kunai skewered the beast and rendered it useless. It's momentum however remained and it continued moving towards Tenshi. He shook his head a little as he cancelled the seal and jumped back a few feet to stop it from going into him. Now he found himself surrounded by another three of the them. In the distance he could hear Haru requesting assistance. It seemed like he had some sort of a plan worked out, and if Tenshi could manoeuvre himself to Haru, taking these beasts with him, he would be hitting two birds with one stone - assuming that Haru's plan worked, and the managed to kill them swiftly. But he was not going to take that chance, he had to end these fuckers here and now. The kunai that skewered the first vole, were pulled out of it by with the use of Jiton, and would begin flowing around Tenshi, while pointing directly at every single vole. He just waited for the right time to strike, the moment any of them stopped moving, began encroaching, or if there was any other opening, the kunai would cut through the air and skewer these voles just like the last one. And he didn't have to wait long; the vole closest to the centre of the battlefield was the first to make a move, and Tenshi sent the kunai dedicated to that vole burning through the air directly at the vole. His eyes then began darting between the other who seemed more cautious. Not having the whole day to waste on them, Tenshi had to make a move. He dashed towards one of them, triggering that one and the other to do that same. He had to be swift. One kunai burned through the air to impale the vole with maximum speed, and once that one has been set off, Tenshi turned around, and the kunai the remained hovering around him, was sent flying towards the only vole that remained in close proximity to Tenshi - to his knowledge anyway.

Eiko couldn't help but grin as her plan worked out, though her smile just as soon vanished as it became apparent that more were coming and they would soon be overwhelmed if they didn't do something to wipe out the horde. They couldn't afford to be fighting individually or just taking out small groups at any one time. It was seeming more and more like this would be a team effort, something that should really have been more clear to her from the start.

As she continued to assess the situation and attempt to formulate a plan she caught Haruno's voice. Fighting together from an elevated position? It was a smart plan, and one that she could luckily assist with as she had an expert knowledge of Doton. "Right then." she muttered to herself, beginning to channel chakra as she dashed over towards Haruno's position. "Everyone capable of fighting at a range gather close! We're fighting together as a unit from here out!" she barked out, hoping beyond hope that they would listen to her.

Regardless of what happened she slammed her hands down on the ground, an earthen pillar 25x25 meters in diameter raising up 40 meters into the air, bringing up anyone within range along with it. "It's up to the rest of you from here." she spoke, keeping her hands placed on the ground. She knew that she could end the technique at any point but for now it was best that she play the role she had been given. Right now she was simply here for moral support and to provide utility as necessary. Besides if necessary she did still have her dad's hand clones to work with. For now though she would simply wait and watch to see what the rest of her comrades did before providing further support.

After performing the correct hand seals the user places their palms on any earthen ground, channeling chakra into it allowing them to lower or raise any 5x5 meter segment of the ground within 40 meters at [Control] speed and strength. The maximum distance the segment can be lowered or raised is 40 meters. The user must keep their palms on the ground during the course of the jutsu. If they remove their palms at any time, the jutsu will end and they will not be able to raise or lower it any further without redoing the technique.

Hayate bit his lip as he slammed the ground with all his might, his chakra causing pillars to rise up alongside that of his daughters as a look of joy came over him. His daughter had truly become a powerful ninja in every way he could have ever hoped. His joy however was soon interrupted as one of the beasts nearly took his head off with it's claws, causing him to the turn to the side and fling his hand, bringing a piece of rock through the beasts head. He needed to focus on sealing holes and rerouting the beasts.

What If I can re-route their tunnels all to one or two locations- control their flow?

The Raikage took a deep breath as he got to work on doing that.

He'd leave watching his back and fighting the rest of the monsters to everyone else.

Tenshi's attacks were strong and he was beating his way with his kunai through the voles- until one would grab onto his ankle as it burst through the ground. Instinctively Haruno lept over- his Kyoukan tendrils connecting to Tenshi to shield and protect him as the massive man put both his hands together and in one over-head cleaving motion brought them down upon the voles head, smashing it's skull like it was nothing.

No sooner than the deed was done would he fling Tenshi up onto one of the pillars that had been made, along with jumping up to one himself.

"Draw them out and keep us high up- get them to stack on the pillars- to stack on us!" the brilliant brother to the 8th Raikage called out with a commanding presence that surprised even Hayate- hell, gave the emperor himself strength and resolve.
