Overdue book? Sos recruitment

Xiao Li was having a pretty nice day off until a young Genin had delivered a scroll hand written by the Lead Archivist of the Scribes to him. It had been a simple scroll, an invitation to meet with her in her office in the Library, but it had Li shaking in his boots. Had he forgotten to return a scroll he had borrowed? Had he damaged one on accident? Li was unable to think of any reason that would make the Lead Archivist call him into her office. Not a happy reason anyhow.

Even though he was just short of a full blown panic attack, he couldn't help but marvel at the grandeur of The Library. Shelves lined every wall, as well as any and all available space in between, with a massive spiral staircase made out of gleaming wood in the dead center of The Library. Every time Li entered the place he had to stop, and take in its magnificence. The Library was heaven for Li, and he was really hoping that he didn't do something to get banned from the place as he made his way up to the fourth floor. He stood in front of the doors leading into the office of the Lead Archivist for many long minutes before he sheepishly knocked.

Kiyori was admittedly still getting used to things. She had always been the Lead Archivist of the Scribes, but it was only now that that title meant she was their full blown leader. Up until a weak ago, Lord Kazekage Hito was the leader and founder of the scribes, with her being his subordinate. However, he had passed the mantle unto her at the same time he promoted her to Jounin... so much responsibility all at once, needless to say she was still acclimating. But her first order of business before taking her trip to Konoha to explain her... 'gifts', was to get some fresh blood in the library.

Being a Henrin, the woman contained the entire library within her eyes, but she also never forgot a face. And among the various faces that she recalled seeing within the Scribes Library, there were many that popped up numerous times. Among them, the most notable and most frequent was a young boy who, admittedly, looked very feminine. The boy was always around the library, and always reading alone. Rarely did he speak to anyone else, content to keep his nose stuffed in a book. Honestly he reminded her of herself in that respect, but hers started off as a job and ended up being a hobby.

Nonetheless, his interest in knowledge made him a prime candidate for the Scribes, and thus she had had a scroll sent to his address. A few hours later, the knock came to her door, or more accurately a set of double doors made of thick mahogany. "Come in!" Kiyori called out to her guest, and once he entered he would see the office was rather luxurious. Lining the circular office was various bookshelves filled with many different books and scrolls that hadn't yet made it to the main floor. As with all things in the main library, it needed to be proofread before it hit the main floor. Her desk was actually made of glass, with a polished surface and wooden drawers running down the left and right sides of her side of the desk. On the other side of the desk, the one that Li would walk in on, had two very nice cushiony chairs, purple in color. The floor was hardwood, polished and well kept.

"Welcome Li, good morning! Please, take a seat."

Li huffed and puffed as he opened the large doors, and his jaw dropped as soon as his eyes took in the woman’s office. He quickly recovered his composure as he walked into her office, having shut the doors behind himself. Li's knees shook so badly it was a wonder her could walk. When he spoke he stuttered so bad that it took him a minute to finish his sentence. ”Madame Archivist whatever it is I have done I am truly sorry. Please do not ban me from the library. I'll do anything.” Li was so scared he was literally shaking in his tabi boots. Despite being utterly terrified, he was unable to stop himself from being amazed at the amount of books in the woman's office.

He had spent years reading books and did not think that he had read as many books as was in her office. Knowledge was gold to Li, and the woman in front of him was his absolute hero. His train of thought then led back to why he was in her office, or rather, why he thought he was there. ”Madame Archivist if I ruined one of your books, or forgot to return a scroll….whatever it is I promise I will make it right.”

Despite feeling awful for the obvious terror running through Li's mind at the possibilities of her meeting with him, she couldn't help but laugh a little bit... it was kind of cute to be honest, poor kid. "Hahahaha, oh Li. No no, it's nothing like that. Truth be told, as annoying as it would be, I could recreate anything on the public floor right now if severe damage were to come to it. Don't tell anyone else that though; I really don't feel like having to recreate hundreds of scrolls because people have no consideration for this library's works." It wasn't necessarily a hidden fact, but there were obviously people out there who didn't know about Kiyori's memorization of the library. Every book, every scroll, every piece of literature that hit the floor was first recorded within her Doujutsu... Just in case something happened to it.

"Be at ease Li, you're not here for any wrongdoings. In fact, I wish to commend you. I don't forget a face, for obvious reasons." Kiyori leaned forward on the table, resting her chin on one hand while using the other to point to her eyes, clearly referencing the Dousatsugan. "Granted, I don't see every single face that enters this library, but lets see... Just a rough estimate, but you've been here abooooouuuut..." She paused in thought for a moment, her mind working with her eyes to recall every time she had seen his face. "One thousand three hundred and eightyyyyyy two times. By my count anyway."

She smiled a big, chipper smile at him, as if this sort of thing was simply a normal part of her everyday life. After all, it kind of was. "Your dedication to learning, your desire to read book after book, scroll after scroll... These motivations are the very foundation of the Scribes of the Sands." She stood up from her chair finally, turning her back on the young boy to look out the large window behind her. The sunlight warmed her skin, causing her tattoos to glow ever so faintly, resonating with the sun's rays. "The pursuit of knowledge is an admirable one, but these tomes don't always come easily. The scribes have worked tirelessly to assemble this library, just for people like you."

She wouldn't drop the ball just yet... she wanted to see how he'd react to all she had said thus far.

Li was astounded. Had he really been there that many times? He knew that he visited the village’s library everyday, at some point, but he didn't think it had actually been that many trips. While he didn’t have a memory like a Henrin’s, Li was able to recall just about everything in a book, or scroll he had read simply by scanning over the first few lines of it. He was also able to call forth any information he has learned when needed. It was why he loved reading and studying. He wanted to know all there was to know in the world.

”My lady, if I have not committed any wrongs, then might I inquire why it is I am here? Li was hopeful, based on what she had previously said, that he was going to be allowed to join the Scribes, however, he did not want to be presumptuous. Being apart of the Scribes was a lifelong dream of his, and could help immensely in his training of Tenkujutsu.

Kiyori took in the boy's reactions, watching his every movement with her keen eyes. He was clearly still uneasy despite her telling him that he was not being reprimanded, but she came to the conclusion that he was just that kind of a kid. Unsure of himself, lacking confidence, introverted and maybe a little socially awkward. She knew the type well, one of her older brothers was like that. "I'm glad that you asked Li. You see, in a few days I will be departing for Konohagakure. I have some things that I need to tell them in person related to my recent... unplanned expedition." She looked to her tattoo's still glowing ever so faintly with the warmth of Her Light.

Then she let out a small sigh before continuing. "Before I do this, I would like to go about finding some fresh blood for the Scribes. We've been a bit down on our luck in recent years, mostly civilians doing a lot of cataloging and collection of materials for transcribing. Occasionally a nugget comes under our noses and we add it to the collection after it's gone through my eyes, But with only a few shinobi capable of seeking out any new tidbits, the library has stagnated a bit. I'm sure you've noticed this yourself, being that you are one of our most frequent visitors."

Kiyori took a step towards one of the scrolls on her shelf, whipping it open with a single hand before taking a quick look at it's contents. The information pertained to some manner of technique once used by a Sunagakure shinobi, a particular method of ninjutsu centered around a specific puppet built by the shinobi themselves. It even included the blueprints of the creature, which appeared to be a bipedal suit of armor with large wings. After about 2 seconds, she rolled the scroll back up and moved it to a pile on her desk; the Out pile. In such a short time, the contents of the scroll were now recorded perfectly in her eyes.

"Sorry, it caught my eye. Literally." She giggled a little to herself, covering her mouth as she did so. Her eyes then centered on Li again, a warm smile on her face. "I'll cut to the chase. Your passion lends itself well to the scribes, and you're a budding shinobi that I can already tell is destined for greatness. Would you like to become a Scribe?"
