Nice Day: Take Two (Closed)

Despite his recent situation involving a certain female Aisu and her mother, things were going decently well for the young Aisu assassin. Once again he found himself out and about in the markets of Kirigakure on a decently well lit day, or at least a well lit day as far as Kiri was concerned. The mist was thinner than usual, and the people seemed happier than usual, Kuro included. He wandered through the market, picking up a few essentials for the next few days, including his usual shipment of mangoes and a few cuts of beef from his usual butcher.

All in all, it was an uneventful but exciting day... The last time he had a day like this however, he ended up running into Megumi. Unlike last time, he was a bit more alert, given the encounter with the young Aisu girl. And so this time, he noticed the other Aisu in the streets. Haa.... Of course. I seem to have really poor luck with bad days lately. Well, hopefully he won't notice me, or if he does he'll at least have the courtesy to leave me be."

He could hope at least, right?

Naohiro was paying little attention to the streets around him as he wandered. Everything had been so hectic lately, it was nice to simply walk. Not hurrying to a mission, not training for an exam, not pacing before a meeting that would determine the rest of his life... Just walking. He was growing to appreciate the little things when they mattered. He paused by a market stall and swapped a silver coin for a stick of grilled shrimp - the price may have been a little extravagant, but the snack suited his mood. At another vendor he stopped to browse trinkets for a good five minutes even though he knew the wares were too tacky to interest anyone he knew. It would be nice to find something for Megumi, but honestly that wasn't why he was browsing. It was simply nice to walk and enjoy a few hours without the weight of the clan weighing upon his shoulders.

Right up until his eyes flicked past Aisu Kuro, that was. He snapped his focus back to the figure walking through the crowd and all thought of a peaceful afternoon vanished. That bastard! A wave of anger and frustration washed through him, seizing his heart in a vice. He'd never met Kuro personally, but no one in the clan could mistake the man that had earned the ire of the entire Aisu. The next thing Naohiro realised he'd begun striding through the crowd towards the man, and had to force himself to stop and think. Until recently he would simply have tried his best to ignore Kuro - except perhaps for a scowl or a muttered word - but now? Now it was personal. The man had become unhinged, lost his temper, and assaulted his fiancée. Within his sudden anger, and because it was Kuro, the circumstances of that encounter didn't matter.

And yet, if he let his heart guide him, he would end up just as Megumi had; a bloodied heap on the floor. He forced himself to step to the side of the street and watch Kuro continue to walk. No one argued the fact that the outcast was strong, only that his presence was a taint upon the clan. Nao knew he had no chance of doing to him as he'd done to Megumi, but neither could he simply let him walk away. Not anymore.
And so he followed, ducking back into the crowds flocking this way and that through the markets. He kept to the densest areas of the street, only peeking occasionally to make sure he kept Kuro in sight, but all the while his mind was aflame. He didn't know what he'd do when Kuro arrived wherever he was going. But he'd follow him there, and do... something. The black-blooded reprobate deserved it.

Oh great, the Aisu noticed him at the same time he noticed the Aisu. This was exactly what he was hoping for today, another Aisu who wanted to be stupid. It was clear that they noticed each other, as the other Aisu began trying to hide himself in the crowd. Sticking far behind him, clinging to the most densly populated pockets of the street, avoiding staring or looking in his direction for long periods of time. It was actually a decent effort, but for one trained in the ways of assassination since the ripe age of 5, it was easy enough to catch wind of. He was being tailed, that much was certain, and that was made doubly worse because he was on his way home.

He was not about to lead a troublemaking Aisu to his appartment.

After moving through some more streets, Kuro made his way through a shortcut, down a back alley between two tall buildings. Once he as out of sight, Kuro quickly crouched in a corner next to a garbage can and was engulfed in a poof of white smoke. When it cleared, all that remained was two garbage cans. The Henge would hopefully hide him long enough for him to catch this tail off guard. After all, the Aisu looked to be barely 16, probably another overzealous chuunin wanting to make his life more annoying. And after the last one, he really didn't feel like getting in another fight.

During his slow-paced pursuit, Naohiro’s initial anger at seeing Kuro - and reminder thereby of what the man had done - had slowly simmered down until just a cold bitterness remained. Though he knew that the desire for revenge was petty, even a little childish, it wouldn’t do to simply let the man escape. Maybe that made him no better than the man he was following - but here they were. He followed Kuro all the way to the alleyway, but then hesitated at the entrance.

He didn’t know this part of the city as well as he’d like. Was this alley a short-cut that Kuro would normally take, or had he discovered his tail? It would be a perfect place to spring a trap. After taking a moment to consider, Nao decided that he couldn’t stop now. It was either that or lose Kuro completely within the city. Besides, with most of the clan treating the man as trash, it did make some sense that he’d travel by alley to avoid too much notice. Naohiro entered the alley and hurried along it, only to stop at exit on the far side. There he swore under his breath.

The exit led onto another wide street, but here only a few people walked along, and clearly none of them were Kuro. Had he run across to another alley? Or darted into a building? But which? There was no way to tell. Cursing, Nao realised he’d failed even in a simple pursuit. His best option now would be to get to the rooftops and and move quicker, and hope he could pick up his quarry from above - even though Kuro would be far more likely to spot him following that way.

He walked back into the alley and began looking for a good spot to climb, then realised he was still carrying the half-eaten stick of grilled shrimp he’d bought earlier - the sight of Kuro had ruined his appetite. He’d need his hands free to climb, of course. Absently, while still looking around for a good spot to scramble up the wall, he reached for a nearby garbage can and went to drop the stick of shrimp into it. He reached out with the hand holding the litter, and his hand snagged at something that felt oddly like… hair?

The young Aisu made his way through the alley, walking right past the Henge'd Kuro before stopping at the other side of the alley. The boy was clearly after Kuro, as he was looking for him on the other street, then turned back to the alley confused by his disappearing act. We're shinobi, and he really didn't think to check the objects in the area? Even if we weren't capable of Henge a trashcan makes for a good hiding spot... Sloppy. As much as he mentally chided the boy though, he was ultimately glad that he didn't find him. He would prefer to simply avoid this confrontation altogether.

But the boy decided to throw away a perfectly good stick of shrimp, and chose -his- trashcan to do it. A mental sigh resounded through his mind, and as the boy grabbed Kuro's hair, he resigned himself to his fate and in a poof of white smoke, the Aisu assassin stood before Naohiro. "You'd do well to get your hand out of my hair Aisu." His tone was level, showing no outward tone of negative emotion. Yet at the same time it was clear that his was a warning, a chance to undo his mistake before things got worse. "I'd prefer to avoid violence, but it seems that that's your call to make."

Unfortunately, Naohiro hadn’t yet worked out what he’d been intending to do when - if - he caught up to Kuro. So when his quarry appeared right infront of him, shrimp-stick jutting out of his black hair, Nao reacted on instinct to the sudden threat. He thrust forward with his left hand, putting his weight into a shove as he tried to slam Kuro up against the wall of the alley. Simultaneously his right hand shot to the side and was engulfed in a faint glow as he channelled chakra into his palm.

”You—!” he spat, and mist coalesced around his open palm into the shape of a kunai, then rapidly froze as the weapon took shape. By the time his mind had caught up to what he was doing, the frozen weapon was already at Kuro’s neck. Staring at the man, Naohiro took a slow breath and tried to control his now-raging emotions. This was the man who’d beaten Megumi bloody, breaking her jaw, and nose, and… And he hadn’t been pushed back by Nao’s shove nearly as much as he’d expected. Clearly, he was threatening someone way beyond his own strength. A small, distant part of Nao’s mind boggled at what a fool he was being - even moreso than Megumi had been.

Trying to school his face back under control - or, at least, away from open anger - Naohiro lowered the Hyouton kunai and stepped deliberately backwards, away from Kuro. Hesitant, and careful, he was clearly backing down from upfront hostility, though the effort involved was clear.

You… and I,” he said, quietly but clearly, have a problem.

After focusing channelled chakra into one hand, the user draws moisture from the air and rapidly freezes it into an object, tool, or weapon no larger than 10x25 cm. The object forms at a speed of 4 and has a strength of 6, and remains for four posts before losing its strength. Outside of combat the technique can be used with increased focus to create objects of intricate or delicate detail. Objects may remain as regular ice if kept in sub-zero conditions.

The young boy's attempt at pushing him back netted him maybe a couple of inches, but his back was still a good couple of feet away from the wall he aimed at pushing Kuro into. Of course, as the boy channeled chakra for some offensive technique, Kuro would do the same, his body glowing a light blue as chakra coalesced into his right hand. Once the boy held the Kunai against his throat, Kuro simply placed his hand against the boy's side. Assuming he touched the boy's side, the frigid cold of Hyouton would flow through his body, chilling his muscles and resulting in moderate muscle spasms as his body worked to fight off the chill.

Of course, the boy had backed off as well, which was good for both of them. He didn't want to hurt the boy... after all, if he had intended to hurt him, he wouldn't have bothered with the Freezing Touch jutsu he had just used. "Get in line kid, You're an Aisu. Most of the clan has a problem with me. But no... you're referring to something more specific than that, something personal. What's got your panties in a twist hm?" He tried to be 'respectful' of the Aisu, or at least as respectful as he could manage given the fact that he had had a weapon against his throat mere moments ago. It was clear that Kuro was working diligently to restrain himself in the situation, he was doing all he could to avoid a repeat of what he had done to Megumi...

But this shithead wasn't making it easy for him.

Kuro will perform a string of hand seals, channeling Hyouton chakra through his body as he does so. If at any point in the next 3 posts Kuro makes physical contact with his opponent, he can discharge this chakra into their body and cause their muscles to seize up, resulting in a -3 strength for the next 4 posts while their body warms back to normal temperature.

Naohiro flinched as he felt Kuro’s deliberate touch to his side, expecting far worse than the wave of cold that resulted. Kuro had placed his technique deftly, but also so effortlessly that it was clear he could have simply ended the confrontation right there and then if he’d so chosen. Nao’s hand went to his side as he spoke and clutched the area, though it did nothing to prevent the icy chill spreading. It seemed to be a simple, but effective technique - and unfortunately left him shuddering for a moment as the muscles there began to shiver and seize.

Though his anger was still broiling, he was struck at how.. calmly Kuro had received him. Most rumours about the man - including the private knowledge of his run-in with Megumi - had led Naohiro to assume that Kuro was a man who could barely contain his anger and emotions, and who would lash out at the smallest provocation; though in light of that simple attack, perhaps it was for the best that he’d been wrong. Instead, Kuro simply stood there and… questioned him? Naohiro bit his tongue from snapping back a response that wouldn’t help the situation. He took a deep breath and, keeping his ice kunai in hand out of caution, began to talk.

”Does the name Aisu Megumi mean anything to you? Young girl, pretty, about my age, broken jaw, black eye?” He forced himself to stand a little straighter and removed his hand from his side, though another shudder ran through him as he spoke. He fixed a level gaze towards Kuro’s one visible eye.
“What would you do, if you were walking down the street and saw a man who you knew had lost control and attacked someone you care about?” He grimaced, and realised he’d taken an unconscious step forward while talking. He forced himself to remain there, not backing down, but neither getting any closer.

The kid's reaction to his technique was what he had hoped for, and it's effects would hopefully discourage any further threats from the boy. After all, he didn't seem that stupid. He knew full well that Kuro could have done a whole hell of a lot worse. As he began to speak about his reasons for detesting him however, Kuro suddenly put the pieces together... This was Megumi's fiance, the one that her mother had said would be by the very next day, meaning her face would be ruined for their first meeting. He couldn't help but feel the teeniest bit of guilt, but that was quickly overpowered by feelings of pure annoyance.

"Kid, this is going to get a whole lot uglier if you don't get rid of that damn kunai. I'm not trying to hurt you, but if you keep threatening me with that knife i'm going to shove it through your neck." Kuro's stance was firm, his defenses up and his reactions on point. This Aisu was much slower and much weaker than him; it'd be over before it began if he pushed him too far. But he took a deep breath through his nose and let it out through his mouth, a slow meditative breath to rein in his fury before things turned bad. Not for this kid's sake, but for Megumi. After all, he did feel remorse for what he had done to her. He didn't want to add on to that with a dead fiance.

"Look, i'm being punished as it is by the girl's mother, a woman who you must know is terror incarnate by now. Whether I respect the clan or not, I have no choice but to respect her and her power. I'm making amends for what happened, so why don't you keep your nose out of it before it get's broken." Kuro leaned back against the wall behind him and stared at the boy, as if daring him to approach any closer. Though in the end there was still something else to respond to... "And as for your last question, I think about that every damn day of my life. You don't have any idea what it's like to live the way I do, with most of the clan ready and willing to beat the person I care most about to a pulp, or worse. And besides... If I talked about Megumi the way she talked about Haruna that day, you'd want to do the same thing I did to her."

Naohiro looked down at the kunai, gripped in a fist that had turned white from the effort of clenching the haft. Slowly, hesitantly, he forced his fingers to open and dropped the weapon. It hit the ground with a clack! of shattering ice. Losing the weapon didn't matter; it wouldn't be of much use if he came to blows with the man before him anyway. The restraint Kuro displayed was obvious, with his deep, deliberate breaths and the careful way he was moderating his tone - not to mention the notably non-lethal jutsu he'd used. Naohiro took a steadying breath himself as he looked back up from his discarded blade, and listened.

What he heard was surprising, and he found himself watching Kuro in an attempt to gauge the man’s sincerity. His comment about Megumi’s mother made him seem genuine - which left Naohiro taken aback. Yet again, the common opinions of the Clan seemed a little off; Kuro wasn’t so devoid of respect and honour as was made out in the rumours - at least, not entirely; his lack of respect for the clan itself made Naohiro scowl - since he seemed serious about his respect for Megumi’s mother.

Before that line of thought could go any further, Kuro spoke again.

”That’s not true,” Naohiro replied forcefully and shook his head, then hesitated. Isn’t it? Did I not just confront him with those very thoughts in my head..? He met Kuro’s eye, then looked down and allowed his guard to drop.

”…No… Maybe it is..” He muttered, feeling ashamed. He desperately wanted to fall in line with the Clan’s opinion and hold himself to a higher standard, and claim that he himself would never stoop so low as to attack one of their own in the streets… But the hypocrisy of that thought increased his shame twofold. In that moment, he hated himself for it - the fact that he, in the height of his anger just a few minutes ago, had been no different than Kuro. No better.

”I’m sorry.” he forced himself to stand straight, meet Kuro’s eye, and then - shockingly - bowed. It was a stiff and formal bow, practiced, and deep enough to show a level of respect - or, in this case, regret - if not clear subservience. There was an art to bowing that only the nobility could quite achieve.
”Truly. I shouldn’t have come after you like this, or… Or blindly listened to what people say. I was wrong.” His voice was dry as he forced the words out, and his face likely revealed the effort they took, but they were as earnest as Kuro’s earlier reply.

”…But here I am. It’s too late to keep my nose out of anything, now. Something tells me I’m involved in all this just as deeply as you are right now - if not considerably moreso.”

Kuro was utterly shocked truth be told, and there was little hiding it on his end. He pushed himself off of the wall, arms crossed, as he gauged the sincerity of the boy's apology. Even more interesting than the fact that he apologized was that Kuro was reasonably sure that he meant it... He detected no hint of a lie in his presentation or his words. "It's fine, don't make a case about it. I'm used to it anyway, so it's nothing new. What do I care if another Aisu feels the need to tell me just how much they despise me?"

If it wasn't clear just how jaded Kuro was in regards to the Aisu clan before, it definitely was now. But he was being honest about being used to it at least, so the young Aisu's previous insults and issues were already purged from his mind. But he couldn't help but wonder what he meant about being involved now. "What do you mean you're involved in this? It's not hard at all for you to just turn around and go about your day. I already said it was fine, don't worry about it, I forgive you, et cetera. You wanna make it better, start thinking for yourself instead of blindly listnening, as you said."

Kuro finally uncrossed his arms before moving to pass the young genin, heading for the other side of the alley but stopping after taking only a few steps. "You could also give me your name. That might help."

Somehow, Naohiro’s earnest words appeared to have defused the situation nicely - even if that had only be possibly due to Kuro’s own reticence. He took a deep breath, trying to take stock of this whole strange encounter.

“My name is Naohiro,” he answered simply, then added after a small pause, ”I’m Megumi’s… She’s my fiancee.” He stumbled a little over those words; while he’d had a few days to get used to the idea - and the strange, overwhelming mix of excitement and apprehension that came along with it - it was still quite new to him. How odd that he should end up mentioning his engagement to Kuro, of all people, when no one outside of his immediate family yet knew about it?

”..Which means this business between you and her isn’t something I can just walk away from, as you say, even if I wanted to. I suppose that’s why I came after you in the first place. Though if you’re already making amends, I guess I can back off a little for now.”

As Kuro began walking away, Nao couldn’t help but take the chance to ask one more thing. If he’d learnt anything from this encounter it was to never take anything at face value, and now that he’d started digging…

”I can see now that a lot of what the Clan says about you is baseless rumour,” he called after Kuro, ”but one thing at least is true; you really do hate us, don’t you?” He watched to see if Kuro reacted, then followed up the question with another, spoken much softer, as if to himself. ”…Why?” This man was undeniably a shinobi of high calibre, and therefore a great potential asset to the Aisu. Yes, he’d defiled his body, but the way he spoke about the Clan revealed something deeper than simple scorn for that. There was something far more bitter and passionate involved, he was sure of it. But where had that cycle of hatred started? Was his own, comfortable upbringing clouding his judgement? The concept of hating his family and peers was so foreign an idea to Naohiro and, as with most things he didn’t understand, he sought to unearth its secrets to better understand…

Kuro only nodded as Naohiro gave him his name, not one for pleasantries or proper introductions, especially not with his family. And he was also rather relieved to know that he would back off, knowing that Megumi's mother had already given him a more than adequate punishment for destroying her daughter's face. He was prepared to walk away entirely, just about to round the corner, when Nao spoke up again... And he asked a question that he had only ever received from Megumi. He paused, looking over her shoulder, the left shouder. He couldn't see Naohiro obviously, his eye was still covered, but Nao would know that he was paying attention. "Heh... why?"

His left hand reached up to slide his headband off of his eye, and he turned to fully face Naohiro, showing him the Hyouteki. He approached the young shinobi, no intent to harm or fight in his face, but he was clearly distraught. "A ninja's duty is to become the best at what the ninja does, willing to sacrifice anything to accomplish this goal. You, me, and every other shinobi takes that pledge, including our extended family. Now look me in my eyes... Give me one name. Tell me the name of one Aisu who has actually done that. I've given up my eye, I've given up my reputation, and most of all I've given up any chance of having a proper relationship with my clanmates ever again."

Kuro was up in Naohiro's face at this point, his cold eyes staring daggers into the boy. "Not one of you has given up more than me. You're all hypocrites, each and every one of you." He'd stand there, staring at Naohiro for a few moments as if daring him to say that he was wrong. And if the boy had nothing to say, he'd turn his back once more, slide his headband back over his eye, and continue on his way out of the alley.

Naohiro fought off the urge to step backwards as Kuro reached him and stopped only inches away from his face. While the man didn't make any directly aggressive moves, the fury in his eyes sent a wave of shock through Hiro. His anger was so focused, so passionate, it simply stunned the young Genin into silence. Nevertheless, a supreme effort of will allowed him to meet and hold Kuro's harsh gaze without visibly flinching - though no doubt his face revealed some of the shock. While the encounter was, in reality, over quickly, it seemed to stretch on for hours before the other man turned and began walking away again.

Then Naohiro sagged, turning to the side and leaning back against the wall of the alley, breathing heavily. What was with Aisu Kuro? What he said didn't seem to match up with the sheer depth of that anger - clearly there were some deep-seated issues that he hadn't revealed. Naohiro thought back on his words, and frowned.
"... What about those who've died in service? How can he ignore them? They sacrificed more than just an eye..." he muttered, so quiet that Kuro might not have heard even if he'd still been there. Most of the Clan believed that Kuro had lowered himself to being little more than a test subject in his hunt for greater power, yet he spoke of his changed eye as a genuine loss to his person. Oddly, Naohiro could relate a little to that; his father, the once-famed Jounin, had been reduced to almost nothing for a time after losing his sight. But whereas Naoshige had fought the scorn, conquered his fears of inadequacy and failure, and eventually risen a better person... Kuro wallowed in bitterness, resenting the very people who should, in turn, have been supporting him. It was all a senseless mess.

These thoughts continued to spin around Naohiro's head long after he picked himself up and left the confines of the empty alley behind. When he passed the gates into the Aisu compound, he looked to the sentries on duty and wondered how their expressions might change when watching Kuro enter as opposed to himself. Would their welcoming nods become sneers? When he greeted his parents, he thought about how they might look away, ashamed, if it had been him who bore the derision of the clan instead of Kuro. How would he deal with it?

He had no idea. Later that night, Naohiro dreamed of a single, piercing blue eye. Filling his vision as if replacing the sky itself, it held within it an unfathomable depth, and glared hatefully at everything he loved. Where its gaze lingered, destruction followed.
