[Graded]A Mauve-Letter Day

Post by Jinan B » Tue Dec 19, 2017 5:08 am

The cool morning mist was out in full force as Kirino made his way through the streets of his village. He had been released from the hospital no longer than a fortnight ago, and since than had been training as intensely as he ever had. Already the time had come for him to return to the circular field where he had faced his last exam, but he was ready for it; where before he had felt nervous, apprehensive, fearful; now he felt nothing but confident. He had already proven to himself that he could fight well enough to become a chuunin against Naohiro even if he had lost. This time, he would be sure to succeed.

As he walked off of the streets and entered the field itself, he noticed that everyone who was going to be here had already arrived. To the east Himari and Riki waited for the bout to begin alongside who he could only assume was the family of his opponent; while his opponent himself stood on the north side of the arena.

One of the women standing among the families began to walk towards him. "Karagata, Kirino? Approach your starting point. When you're ready, we can begin without further ado." It appeared as if everyone else present was as keen to see the end of the fight as Kirino himself was; something he supposed was fair enough. It would make sense that whoever he was fighting had also failed his first attempt at the exam, after all. Kirino would quickly take off his cloak and put it on a nearby bench before moving to his position and signalling his readiness.

In a few minutes the boy would be one step closer to finally earning his promotion. He was sure of it

"The field itself was nothing remarkable, save perhaps for it's unusual shape. Rather than being rectangular or otherwise roughly edged, the field was practically a perfect square, 50 meters by 50 meters. It's Western, Nothern, and Southern sides were no more than 30 meters away from the roads of the 2nd tier of Kiri, with heavy bush serving as buffer in case of any jutsu gone amiss. The Eastern side, on the other hand, opened up onto a large body of water that bordered the entire side of the field and went out for about 25 meters. The field itself was flat, consisting of short, soft grass."

A Mauve-Letter Day

Shugo Atsuji stood proudly, shoulders squared and head held high as he watched the newcomer enter the field. So this was his training dummy for the day? He didn't look like much. Atsuji himself was half a head taller and broader that his opponent, which would probably give him a distinct advantage. The lad looked a little younger than him, too. What a shame. Atsuji turned to the crowd - most of it seemed to be his family and friends - and shrugged nonchalantly. A few of them chuckled and he gave them a confident grin. Today he would be the epitome of boldness and give them the show they'd come for. He already looked the part with his shirt discarded to show off his scars and a cape to flare out behind him as he ran. All he had to do now was win.

He walked over to the proctor and raised his hand for all to see, signalling that he was ready to begin. "Karagata Kirino, huh? Give me a good fight and I might remember your name for your tombstone. I'm Shugo Atsuji. I'll make this quick for ya." He stretched his neck and flexed an arm, then dropped into an obvious fighting stance, bouncing on the balls of his feet with his fists up at the ready. Poised so, he waited for the fight to begin.

As soon as it did, he surged forward with surprising speed. As soon as he got within a couple of metres of Kirino he leaped up and into a vicious spinning heelkick aimed at his opponent's head.

As he waited for the proctor to affirm their readiness, Kirino began to take in the details of his opponent. It didn't take a second for him to figure out that he was large, old, and far more outwardly confident than he had any right to be. If Kirino had to make a guess; Shugo Atsuji hadn't fought a close battle in his life. Had the circumstances been different, Kirino might have wondered just which noble house had failed so dismally in showing Atsuji his true place within the village. No matter, that role just had to fall to him then.

Kirino would make no reply to the boy's insolent statements, instead only lifting his arm for the proctor to see. A slow moment passed as the women confirmed what the two contestants clearly already knew, before her voice rang out across the arena.

"Begin!"

Instantly Kirino's opponent began to sprint across the field towards him, clearly seeking to end the fight as soon as it began and giving away just what his particular field of expertise was. Kirino, however, didn't take a single step. Instead, he shifted onto the balls of his feet slowly; simultaneously analysing the speed of his opponent and bringing his hand down towards his belt. Taking an explosive tag in his hand, Kirino would let it fall next to him as Atsuji leaped up for his attack.

Heh... Too easy.

The moment Atsuji went up Kirino went down; ducking into a roll and moving right under the attempted strike. As his feet once again made contact with the ground Kirino would leap into the air, twisting mid-air before pulling off one more backwards somersault to put some distance between the two competitors and, more importantly, between himself and the explosive. Before he had even had a chance to land the Karagata's left hand would form the kai seal, hopefully setting off the tag directly underneath his opponent.

If all had gone well, Kirino would then proceed to begin forming another set of hand seals while moving backwards as quickly as possible. Once completed, he would begin to expel mist from his mouth, turning the field in front of him into an arena where he could truly turn the fight into a demonstration of his skills.

A Mauve-Letter Day

Post by Valkier » Wed Dec 20, 2017 10:40 am

Even though Kirino seemed quicker than expected and managed to duck under his strike, Atsuji wasn’t surprised. The attack had been obvious and easy to dodge. He followed through with the kick anyway, using its momentum to spin around. He’d been intending to chain it into a second kick in this case, aimed low to trip his opponent, but his eyes caught the scrap of paper as it wafted gently downward to the ground. His eyes widened for a moment, but then he focused and used the same momentum to lash out again with another arcing kick. All in one motion, he kicked the tag away from him, then jumped in the opposite direction just as it was triggered.

The shockwave from the blast helped push him in the air and he flew a good few metres before landing smoothly, expert footwork making the exaggerated jump away from danger seem wholly natural. He turned and grinned at Kirino, obviously enjoying the fight already.

”Nice try, kid! But not good enough!” As Kirino began making hand seals, Atsuji did the same, eyes never leaving his opponent. Kirino completed his technique much sooner, but the mist that poured from his mouth took a moment to begin thickening. There was just enough visibility left for Atsuji to complete his own technique and still aim it correctly. He concentrated has chakra into his right fist and foot, then raised his leg and stamped down powerfully. A heavy chunk of earth tore free from the impact and flew up infront of him, which he then punched with his chakra-infused hands. The rock shattered into five fragments, all flying directly towards Kirino as the mist slowly began to obscure him.

With that done, Atsuji turned and began to run in the opposite direction to the mist. Kirino was clearly fast enough to keep some distance between the two, so catching him within his mist would be difficult. He needed a different tactic, and for now it was simply to keep moving and avoid getting caught in the Karagata’s technique.

The user performs a set of handseals and focuses chakra into up to two limbs of their choice, then uses them to strike the ground nearby. This causes a basketball-sized chunk of earth to become imbued with their chakra and fly up infront of the user. This rock can then be hit again using the technique's remaining chakra, fragmenting and firing it towards an opponent. The fragments fly with a speed of 4, and collectively strike with a strength of 6.

A Mauve-Letter Day

Post by Jinan B » Thu Feb 15, 2018 9:14 am

With his jutsu already completed and a thick veil of mist rapidly forming between Kirino and his opponent, the genin wasn't able to spot the attack until it was hardly a few meters away from him. Reacting quickly he tried to turn roll out of the way of the projectiles, but only succeeded in taking almost the full brunt of the blows on his back instead of his chest and face. With the force knocking him off balance, he stumbled and landed flat on the ground, groaning softly as he picked himself up from his early mistake. Regardless, while he would certainly end up with a few bruses in the morning, the hits weren't nearly enough to put him out of commission. By the looks of things, Atsuji wasn't nearly as proficient at ninjutsu compared to his taijutsu prowess. The thought brought a grin to the Karagata's face; if that was the case than all he needed was to be careful to ensure that the day would be his. His opponent wasn't skilled enough to take him on using only taijutsu, and if this was the limit of his other techniques then the day was almost certainly his. Just as he thought it would be.

But the day wouldn't be won on arrogance alone; with the hit he had just taken being more than enough to remind Kirino of that particular fact. As it were, he would be quick to channel chakra in preparation of his next jutsu, the keystone in allowing him to fight to his full ability within the mist. A few seconds later and his eyes would lighten to their electric blue; revealing the area before him that was previously so very shrouded within the mists. Of Atsuji himself, there seemed to be no sign.

Yet now, time was on the Karagata's side; and so the boy would simply begin to walk westward towards the edge of his mists; counting his steps as he did so. He caught sight of his opponent quickly, seeing that he was on the far side of the arena after hardly any steps at all. It wasn't unexpected that he would have fled beyond the reach of his jutsu, but it did provide an additional obstacle in his path. His strongest techniques required that Atsuji be within his mist, after all. Thankfully, Kirino doubted that the other genin had much of a means to attack him from outside of the mist either, especially if he remained unseen.

By his 30th step, 6 meters from what he knew from experience would be the end of his mist, Kirino stopped. If Atsuji moved, he would make sure to remain in a position where he could observe his opponent from a position of safety; all the while forming his next set of hand seals. A rush of water would spew out into his own shape as he formed the clone. It stood facing him for a moment, before the original handed over 7 of his kunai to the clone, 2 with connected explosive tags.

Quickly, Kirino moved further into his mist while his clone planted one of the tagged kunai in the ground before moving to its edge. With Atsuji in sight the clone would throw 4 of its kunai at the genin in quick succession, already planning a controlled retreat into the mist in the event that the boy would charge.

After channeling chakra into his eyes, Kirino will activate the Toramugan, switching the spectrum of light that he sees to infrared. This has the effect of allowing him to see thermal radiation, and allowing him to see through various particulates (such as mist) that he would not be able to see through otherwise. This vision remains the same regardless of the amount of regular light. While stronger than the Beginner's Vision, this iteration of the Toramugan is still far from perfect, and so Kirino is only able to see through 7 times the amount of particulate than he would otherwise be able to see through.

Stay mobile! Atsuji's instincts took him away from the thickening mists, and he ran westward until he felt comfortably beyond the edge of the cloud. There, he turned and surveyed the arena; the mist stretched at least fifteen metres in either direction before him, and though he still had a little distance - and a stretch of open water - at his back, the terrain was open, devoid of cover. He made himself keep moving, running to one side and then the other while keeping a careful eye on the mist.

What's his plan? His mind began working on the puzzle that was Kirino's strategy. Most mist users rely on ambushes inside the cloud. So he's probably in there, waiting for me to get caught? He changed direction again, now running north, to keep himself a moving target. Does he have a way to find people inside the cloud? That goes against the traditions of the style, but it's not unheard of... But more importantly, how do I get to him?

Suddenly a vague shadow moved within the edge of the mist and four kunai tore from its edge, heading directly towards him. However, their speed was unimpressive. Atsuji drew three of his own kunai and threw them in one flawless motion; two met with oncoming weapons and sent them ricocheting harmlessly away. The third kunai he threw seemed to miss by a hair's breadth - but continued to fly directly towards the source of Kirino's weapons. His own throws were much faster, and he was confident he could snapshot a retaliation with that kunai, and have a decent chance of hitting with it.

Kirino's remaining two kunai continued towards him. Atsuji somersaulted backwards and in the same motion drew a fourth knife of his own. At the last moment he twisted his body sideways and made a deft slash; one of the oncoming kunai passed wide, missing him by an inch due to his dodge, and the second was blocked by his own knife, deflected away. When no more weapons came at him, he moved his kunai to his mouth and held it there while beginning a set of hand seals. The terrain was too open here, which was giving his opponent - who apparently could find him - an advantage. So he had to change that.

After a moment, he dropped to one knee and slammed a palm down onto the ground. Earth rent before him in a line, and a thick wall of rock erupted upwards, effectively shielding him from Kirino's view. He moved directly into a second set of seals without pause, and soon a basic clone appeared beside him while he was hidden. Then, carefully, he peeked a head out from the side of the barrier to keep watch on the mist.

This isn't a time to hold back... he thought, and began stirring his chakra ready to begin another set of seals. Ninjutsu was not his forte, but when used correctly...

From his position within the mist, Kirino could clearly see exactly how his opponent was dealing with the attacks sent his way. Even as he managed to stop each incoming projectile in its track, the rival genin was simultaneously able to throw back a kunai with a velocity far exceeding that of the clone's attacks. The attack was near perfectly aimed, and if it had been made in the open; instead of against an attacker already moving back into hiding; it would probably have struck well enough to take out Kirino's clone altogether. As it was, the clone's movement led the kunai to strike its left arm instead, striking deep enough to ensure that any future hit would almost certainly disperse the construct.

The acrobatic moves were certainly impressive, but even though they made for a successful defense they also helped Kirino further add to his idea of exactly what he was dealing with. It had been clear to see from the beginning that Atsuji possessed great proficiency with taijutsu; and his earlier attack had shown some, though not much, knowledge of doton ninjutsu as well. Despite that, it still seemed to the boy that he could overwhelm his opponents defense if he just played his cards right. Atsuji could stop kunai in their tracks all day, as far as Kirino could tell, but he was equipped with weapons that would do harm even before making direct contact.

Even as the last of the clone's projectiles were falling to the ground, Kirino was preparing a new set of hand seals. He ran quickly through the motions that he had practiced time and time again in the weeks leading up to the challenge before him, and before that in preparation for his failed match against his true rival. Finishing the seals by clasping his hands together, Kirino brought them apart once more and saw a bead of flame shine blindingly in the vision of his bright eyes. He fed more of his chakra into the new creation, increasing its size and heat before he beheld a mass of bright yellow flame the size of a basketball in his hands. Then, he clasped them together once more, extinguishing the flame. His hand moved to his hips before they opened for a final time, forming the newly made katon into a spinning ring around his hips. Kirino had not truly had the chance to use this new jutsu of his in battle before, but now it was something that he was more than happy to have at his disposal.

All the while, however, he had been keeping an eye on the heat being given off by his opponent: at least, until the signature seemed to slowly disappear from the ground up. Now, his jutsu complete, Kirino paused at the sight of it. Had Atsuji managed to puzzle out the source of his sight, or was it merely a side-effect of something else the genin had done? Either way, if his ancestral ability was to be even less capable of spotting the boy than his regular eyes were they were completely useless. With a blink, Kirino's eyes faded away from their electric blue as he squinted through the now impermeable vale of mist separating the competitors.

If Atsuji refused to come into the mist and was instead able to hide himself from Kirino's sight, then time had shifted to the proud boy's favor. Kirino couldn't keep his mist up forever after all. In that case, the obvious solution was to go on the attack and carry the fight that way. Kirino would make his way carefully towards the edge of the mist once more, ready to react to any new attack. He would briefly come into Atsuji's sight as he beheld the wall that the boy had created, before quickly retreating back into cover. Coming to where he knew his clone would have moved to, he gave a simple instruction. "Destroy the wall," he would say, before moving to another position to its north; just beyond the edge of an onlookers vision.

The clone would make its own way boldly out of the mist, perceiving the earthen wall before it and immediately bringing out its tagged kunai. The construct would throw the kunai at the center of the wall, and then shift immediately into a defensive stance; watching for any attack to come its way.

Kirino himself would wait a few seconds before bringing himself to the mist's outskirts more carefully. He would look upon the battlefield before him, ready to kai the explosive tag if his clone's kunai had found its mark.

A Mauve-Letter Day

Post by Valkier » Fri Dec 28, 2018 6:27 pm

Crouching down and watching intently from the side of his earthen barricade, Atsuji fixed his attention on where he'd last seen Kirino's shape in the mists and continued to form the seals for his next technique. How far is it to the edge? He's probably lurking just inside, watching and waiting... He frowned in concentration as he tried to gauge the distance and complete his technique at the same time. Ninjutsu is so frustrating! He couldn't be sure how this plan would turn out, but it was likely his best chance; the field wasn't big enough, and was too open, for him to keep running from the mist. Besides, playing defensive isn't my sorta game!

As the technique neared its completion he ducked back behind his barrier and slammed a palm down into the ground, pushing chakra down and out. Almost immediately the earth opened up in a two-foot diameter hole, and he half fell, half slid down into it before it closed, seamlessly, above him. With the basic clone lurking above, he'd given himself a perfect opportunity to try and ambush his opponent, providing he could strike in the correct place.
Taking a moment to orient himself towards where he believed the mist and foe were, he refocused his chakra into the wall of earth in front of him. Slowly, but steadily, it melted away to the sides and reformed behind him, allowing him to quite effectively burrow through the terrain. Trusting to the technique — which was really about as complex as he'd ever been able to manage — to keep him silent, he slowly edged his way forward towards Kirino's last known location.

Back above ground, the kunai thrown by Kirino's water clone would easily find its mark in the Doton wall, hitting dead-centre and then detonating from the master's command. The wall would burst open in a flash of light, sending dirt and rocks flying outwards and leaving a gaping U-shaped void in the middle. As the debris from the blast cleared, Kirino and his clone would easily be able to see the shocked face of Atsuji standing beyond. Atsuji's clone quickly recovered, hopping backwards and assuming a simple taijutsu posture. The arrogant smile was gone, however, and the clone slowly backed away from Kirino, flashing glances to its left and right as if searching for a way to escape the enemy ahead of it as it inched away towards the border of the training field...

The explosive tag went off perfectly; blowing right through the weak defense that Atsuji had been able to put up and exposing the boy himself on its other side. As soon as he became visible Kirino's clone would throw its final kunai at its foe; an attack that would be almost immediately followed up with a blast of katon from Kirino's own belt of fire. The clone would not have the chance to evade this offensive, as slow as it was, and would vanish on contact with the projectiles.

Of course, seeing his supposed opponent disappear without so much as an over-engineered attempt at an acrobatic escape gave Kirino pause. Atsuji had somehow managed to escape without so much of a whisper; leaving Kirino with the most basic of clones to keep up a distraction. The boy wheeled around immediately, trying to spot the ambush that would surely be coming next, but found only his clone (appearing altogether nonplussed at the latest turn of events) and his own softly shifting veil of mist.

"Tighten! On guard!" the boy would bark at his construct, causing it to quickly shift north and stand back to back with its creator. With the two gathered just past the north edge of Atsuji's now defunct wall, halfway between the construct and the all obscuring mist over the rest of the field, the pair would have a near 360 degree view over the avenues of approach. The boy himself would bring out a further two kunai and pass one to the clone. He was ready for his opponent to spring his ambush. When Atsuji struck, he would be spotted in an instant.

And the fight would be ended not long afterwards.

A Mauve-Letter Day

Post by Valkier » Sat Dec 29, 2018 2:04 pm

Edging forward step by step, Atsuji counted and measured in his head. This technique, while offering great protection and cover, was just painfully slow. And he itched to get back to the fight. Worse, the longer he moved down here the longer his opponent had to discover his decoy and set up an ambush for him in return, voiding the entire strategy... But he was already committed, so he grit his teeth and plodded onwards, still aiming to position himself just behind where he'd last seen Kirino lurking. Since that had been on the edge of the mist, Atsuji kept moving until he estimated that he was a few metres further inside the mist, hoping that he could leap out and assault his foe from behind.

Finally, with the completion of a few final handseals, he crouched and leaped upwards, forcing his way through the roof of earth and launching himself back into the fight. He emerged, spinning and ready to strike at... an empty, mist-shrouded field.

"Shit! Where did he go?" He swung his head around, searching. He'd been too slow, and his target had moved on. Crouching down, he paused to begin another short set of hand seals before placing a hand against the ground. As he did so, small clumps of rock rose from the earth and formed a hard casing around his left hand, stiffening into a solid lump. Even after just a few low-ranked jutsu, he could already feel the pull on his chakra reserves, and by the time the technique was complete he was left breathing notably harder.

Then, with nothing else up his sleeve, he began sneaking through the mist, searching a few metres one way then another until he found the edge of the cloud. He hesitated as he made out two figures standing ahead, back to back in the open and clearly waiting for him to strike. And finally Atsuji smiled. No doubt they could see him just as well as he could see them; but a direct confrontation was now exactly what he wanted. Without wasting any more time, he launched himself forward at a dead sprint towards the two Kirino's. Only when he fully cleared the mist did he see the balls of fire circling one of the figures — that would probably be the real Kirino, then, unless his clones were incredibly advanced.

There was no time to fish around for kunai to try and dispatch the clone, so instead he ran straight forward and hoped that his speed was enough to approach before the boy could complete any new jutsu...

Doton • Gaian fist
D-Rank Ninjutsu
The user performs the required hand seals before touching a patch of earth or rock and infusing it with doton chakra. Small chunks of rock will break off or emerge from the ground and rise up to form a strong, boulder-shaped casing around a hand of the user's choosing. The rock gauntlet forms at a speed of 2 and has a strength of 8. After three posts, the gauntlet reverts to simple rock around the user's hand. While the rock is worn, the user is unable to form hand seals.

A Mauve-Letter Day

For a moment, there was silence. All across the battlefield, all Kirino could hear were his own short breaths and the sounds of his feet, alongside those of his clone, softly shifting and crushing the grass beneath them. Even the sounds of the Kirigakure morning a mere 30 meters away from him had drifted into the distant background. The only sounds that he cared to hear however; the sounds of his opponent recklessly charging directly into the line of fire; were completely absent. Was Atsuji possessed of a more level head than Kirino had previously assumed? He had been smart enough to avoid the boy's mist; something that would surely have saved him from a crushing defeat; but laying an ambush? That seemed entirely beyond someone's who's fighting style seemed to be as designed for spectators as it was for actually putting down an enemy.

Nevertheless, the boy waited. Atsuji was a close range combatant; and that made going back into the mist without reactivating his dōjutsu a foolish endeavour. Even if he did go that path, he couldn’t discount the chance that the genin had found a way to completely circumnavigate being found that way. That left the best option in the Karagata's mind: waiting. If this was indeed an ambush, Atsuji would have to spring it sooner or later. The boy might have been tempted to move behind the wall that he had so recently destroyed, but that in itself seemed like it might just be playing into his foes hands.

Then, he heard the distant rumble of earth shifting. Not from the west, as he might have expected, but from the east within his own mist. Had Atsuji decided to come after him after all, just not in time for Kirino to have actually still been there? Mere seconds later, the suspicion was confirmed. Atsuji practically leapt out of the mist right where Kirino's clone had made its initial attack; finally demonstrating the strategy that Kirino had expected of him.

The expected strategy that had already been prepared for, that is. Without the suiton construct at his back, Atsuji might have been on him before he even realized. As it were, the clone made to throw its sole remaining kunai at its target's centre of mass; and the sudden movement alerted Kirino to the presence of danger. He spun around, moved to his clone's left, and saw his opponent.

Then he let loose his fire.

Firing his arm out, Kirino channelled his chakra back into the ring around his waist. 3 balls of katon detached themselves from the ring, the first launching itself directly at Atsuji's lower stomach. The other two were both aimed slightly to each side of the boy so as to render dodging to either side a near impossibility. Before the balls could have made it halfway between the two genin another ball detached from the belt, following the path of the first projectile. The flame was aimed low, which meant that the obvious angle of avoiding them would be to take to the sky. Of course, if that was the path that Atsuji decided to take, it would put him in a poor position to avoid Kirino's next round of planned attacks.

A Mauve-Letter Day

As expected, Atsuji's head-on charge didn't go unnoticed. Kirino's clone was the first to see and attack, throwing a kunai directly towards him; Shugo's speed made dodging the attack an easy solution, however. Twisting himself mid-stride, he narrowed his profile and dropped to one knee, skidding for a metre or two and lowering himself just enough for the weapon, aimed at where his chest had been, to whistle by overhead. Then he kicked himself back upright and continued his charge. He'd lost speed, but not his life.

But what he didn't expect was the fire. His hope was that Kirino would need to prepare his jutsu before launching — but no. Without so much as the waggle of a finger, his real opponent turned and unleashed fury upon him. It was so sudden that his only defense was the instinctive one; he frantically crossed his arms across his face and chest, hoping to place them between himself and the fireball. The fiery projectile exploded against his rock-laden fist, shattering the gauntlet and sending a wave of flaming shards of stone in all directions as his own jutsu was blasted apart.

His scream was a mix of anger, pain, and panic as the rock splinters lacerated his face and chest and the remainder of the fireball bore into him. Cuts opened all across his face and blood began to seep out, mixing with sweat and the cinders of his smoking cape and the smell of burnt flesh on his torso. He stumbled, and was recovering his footing as the last fireball came at him. Desperate, and seeing his end approaching fast, he threw himself to one side in a frantic dodge.

But he wasn't fast enough. The distance between himself and Kirino was now so small that the second attack shot forward with too little opportunity for him to move aside properly, and the fireball caught his right leg as it burst, sending blinding pain through the limb as flames engulfed it. His scream grew louder, and yet...
His dive took him to the left of the clone, and his hands instinctively found the ground and spun him into an attack, despite the flames still flaring out from his leg. By pivoting just so, he turned the momentum of the dive into an improvised upside-down roundhouse kick, aiming directly at the clone.

A Mauve-Letter Day

Even though Kirino had already come up against Atsuji head on at the beginning of the bout his sheer speed and reaction time was more than the boy had accounted for. His foe came on him like a whirlwind, dodging the clone's kunai with what seemed like a practiced ease before continuing to close the distance by leaps and bounds. Even the force of his fire, fired without warning from a distance of a mere couple of meters, was blunted; first with some new doton jutsu and second with a dodge made quickly enough for the flame to strike the boy's leg instead of his chest. Kirino hadn't faced a combatant so specialized in the art of taijutsu in a long while, and he had now underestimated his foe.

Yet even Atsuji had taken hits from his attacks, and now he was in a position to take yet more still. Even as the boy's desperate spinning kick was overpowering Kirino's construct and the suiton that made up the clone was spilling out and onto Atsuji's wounds; the Karagata would fire yet more balls of flame in quick succession. The first two would be aimed at his opponent's legs, enticingly positioned as they were. Unless Atsuji was able to move with even more speed in the time it took the attack to cross the now meter or 2 between the genin, he would feel a burst of katon first connect with his right ankle; and then another against his left knee.

If he wasn't able to move after that, the next two burst would connect dead centre against his chest once it had spun to once again face Kirino. Then there would be 1 more blast held in reverse; just in case the kid managed to make it through even that offense.

This would be the end of the battle, one way or the other. Either Atsuji would finally succumb to the fire being lopped against him; or he would be able to engage Kirino in melee and end the bout in a sudden reversal of their previous fortunes.

A Mauve-Letter Day

Atsuji's kick, though improvised and weaker than he'd have liked, was still enough to finish the already wounded clone. The trailing flames on his leg gave way to a gush of steam as his foot sank into and through its watery body, destroying it and also bringing some relief to his burn. He followed through on the motion, knowing that his window to recover and strike the real Kirino was fleeting; at any moment—

The next fireball knocked his right leg out from under him, wreathing his ankle in flames and sending a fresh wave of pain. Gaaahh!! Another hit his left knee immediately after and it too gave way, burning as he toppled forwards under his own motion. Before he could hit the ground, a third ball fired almost point-blank hammered into his chest and sent him sailing backwards. He landed with a thud, skidding away from Kirino on his back. His chest was alight with pain, not only from the flames but from the repeated impacts it had sustained during his assault. He writhed, screaming, trying to batter at the flames to extinguish them while thrashing his legs. Nearby, medic-nin stationed at the side of the field took a few steps forward, ready to intervene.

Eventually the frantic patting and rolling in the dirt succeeded in putting the flames out. But Atsuji was a mass of burns and pain, lying on the ground and panting heavily. He could see Kirino still standing nearby, watching and waiting with a fireball still circling his waist. Shugo starting moving his arms, intending to make a seal, but then stopped mid-movement as a fresh lances of pain shot through his chest with each breath. I can still—!! No!

The adrenaline of the fight was fading quickly now, and with it went his determination and will to continue. He let himself fall flat, closing his eyes and panting. Even if he could get up, there was nothing left he could do; Kirino was there waiting, ready to strike the moment he got his footing, or tried ninjutsu, or... He squeezed his eyes shut, balled his fists, and yelled his frustration to the sky in a wordless howl. And then, as his cry trailed off and silence returned to the field, he raised his burnt left hand to the sky in a sign of surrender.

At once, the waiting medic-nin surged forward and surrounded him. In a few short moments he was lifted to a stretcher and receiving brisk treatment. He couldn't even see his victorious opponent through the swarm of attendants, though between them he could make out an even larger crowd crossing the field towards the young Karagata, many calling out excitedly.

A Mauve-Letter Day

Atsuji moved quickly, but not quickly enough to save him from Kirino's attacks. The first three blasts of flame found their mark perfectly, the third striking with such strength that it threw the boy several meters away. Kirino hadn't been expecting so much success, and the last strike hit the ground well short of Atsuji's new position; but it made no difference. The damage had already been done; Atsuji lay on the floor, desperately trying to put out the flame threatening to engulf him, and Kirino's breaths slowly lengthened as he watched the boy struggle.

Some small, empathetic part of Kirino wanted to do nothing more than drop his weaponry and help make sure Atsuji, this fellow ninja of his own village, survived the wounds inflicted upon him. He wasn't a true enemy; not a Missing-nin sworn against the village, nor an agent of Konoha or Suna or Kumo. Why was he standing aside and lengthening the time that Atsuji would spend being treated for his wounds after the fight? Taking away from the boy's chances to train or serve the village.

The urge was quickly crushed, however. Even if he tried to aid his fellow genin, the boy would simply take it as a chance to turn the battle against Kirino. He didn't plan on losing his second exam, especially now that he had come right to the precipice of success. So he waited, watching with a face made of stone as his opponent cried out in pain and slowly brought the flames down to cinders, and then to nothingness.

And he waited, ready to strike again should the need arise, as Atsuji tried briefly to get back on his feet. The boy seemed so determined that the Karagata briefly believed he would need to continue the fight to a complete knock out if he was to finish it, but then his body hit the floor once more. A moment later his hand went up, signaling his defeat for all assembled to see.

The Karagata would lift his hand up and form it into the Kai seal; swiftly dispersing the previously expansive mist and making way from him to see the spectators to the fight moving quickly in their direction. There he saw his brother and mentor smiling widely, while ahead of them came a group of medical ninja to tend to Atsuji's wounds. The proctor was there as well, and must have declared the match at some point, but the noises made were all but inaudible to the Karagata. The match had tired him, and he was ready to go back home and prepare for his meeting with the authorities in the village. Finally, the boy's hands would move to enclose the final ball of flame from his previous Jutsu. Slowly, they would begin to close on the fire before clasping together entirely.

Then he began to move to where his opponent was already having his wounds assessed and treated. He heard one of the medics report on the boy's leg, saying that he'd certainly need at least some time in recovery before he'd be able to run without pain again. The Karagata would ignore all of them, instead looking directly at his defeated foe. Placing his hand together, he would bow to the boy. "Thank you for the match, Atsuji. I hope you find success in the future." Then, without waiting for a response from the genin; he would turn and begin to walk home.
It was early the next morning when Kirino woke to find that a message had been delivered for him; signed with a name that he did not recognize, but a title (Jounin of the mist and Chuunin exam proctor) that he did. Once opened, he stared in shock at what the message held.

To one Karagata, Kirino

This letter is to serve as proof that your abilities as a shinobi have been weighed before Kage and council, and were found to be satisfactory. Your service record and performance in your two Chuunin exams have demonstrated an adequate aptitude in the arts of the shinobi; and it has been decided that no interview will be needed to determine your readiness for promotion.

On this, the third day of the seventh month of the year 122X, you are hearby granted the rank of Chuunin of the Mist. You may present this missive at the Mizukage's tower to receive your flak jacket as recognition of this honor.
