Atop a hill in the eastern reaches of Kirigakure, the white marble of a grave marker rose like a beacon into the coming dusk. A black-painted kraken crouched over it, chiselled tentacles laying claim to the body hidden beneath. A small body, cold before its time. A figure crossed dark grass towards the summit, blue and white haori flapping in a chilly evening breeze, and stopped before the grave. He stood there for a few minutes, looking down at the marker in silence, before ducking down and cupping a hand over the top of the headstone.

”Your friend sends his regards,” he spoke softly to the stone, ”and says he’ll visit again soon.” A faint blue-white glow shone from under the man’s hand, and when he removed it a small figurine of a bird sat perched atop the marble, its ice-formed wings frozen wide. He didn’t know the animal’s significance, but clearly it had represented something between Aisu Yōgisha and Karagata Tarō. The boy had asked it placed beside the Kraken once again.

After a minute longer, the man standing rose and stepped back, took a deep breath, then turned to look out over the hill, waiting. Delivering Yōgisha’s wishes to an old friend was only part of what had become an annual tradition between himself and his own old friend. Despite all the inter-house tension that drove Kirigakure, here stood yet another Aisu whose bond with a Kraken transcended death itself.

The man would not have to wait long before he saw a second figure climbing the hill towards him. The newcomer was dressed formally, a black crested haori matched with a black and white striped hakama. Clothes fit for mourning. He bowed to the Aisu as he reached the white grave and its attendant. Then, without saying a word, he knelt at the grave marker. Carefully he arranged several sticks of incense on top of the marble. A moment later, a small flame formed from his hands would light them, the smoke gently rising upwards as they burned.

The man stood, still silent, and looked back at his companion. Five years ago Karagata Tarō had lost his life; five times since they had made their way to the top of this hill to pay their respects. He remembered how, for a brief moment, the tensions between Karagata and Aisu seemed that much closer to finally boiling over; how many members of his own family seemed ready to seek retribution for the perceived murder of one of their own. He remembered how he had seen his old friend for the first time in years as the pair urgently tried to determine the truth behind the young boy's passing. He remembered how much had come from that one fateful pairing. As strange as it was, both men owed much to that tragedy five years ago.

Moments passed quietly as the man remained lost in thought. Finally, he would speak; his voice hardly more than a whisper.

"So much has happened since he passed... It feels like it’s been a lifetime."

He looked up as he fell silent once again; seeing for the first time a new piece of painted marble. Karagata, Takeru, read its engraving. A father, reunited with his son at long last.

Naohiro raised a hand as his friend approached, then turned back to the grave and stood quietly as Kinsue paid his own respects.

"It really does," he nodded, "for everyone, I'll bet. I just came from Yōgisha's place. Can you believe he's been a chuunin for over a year already? We knew he had potential from back then, but it's still a shock to see how much he's grown." It'd been the sudden emergence of the boy's bloodline release on that day five years ago, mid-spar against his friend, that had taken Karagata Tarō's life. The terrible accident had almost sparked an open conflict between the Karagata and the Aisu until Kinsue and Naohiro had unravelled the situation. But it had also been an early testament to Yōgisha's potential as a ninja for his Hyouton talents to have emerged so early—he hadn't even graduated the academy at the time—and he hadn't disappointed since.

"And now Tarō's family have lost a second member. They've had to deal with this pain two times too many." He grew sombre again, staring at across at the the more recently carved headstone. "Do you run into them often? I hope they're doing okay."

"He's done well for himself, but I'm sure he has further still to go, Kinsue replied. The Yōgisha he knew now was far removed from the exhausted, terrified boy he had met all those years ago. He still remembered seeing the Aisu’s Chuunin exam just 14 months prior. A one-sided affair if there ever was one. Kinsue smiled, just a little. Yōgisha's opponent had been a noble himself, full of unwarranted confidence quickly washed away alongside his hopes of a promotion.

But they had all come far, hadn't they? He and his friend had both been Genin for far too long when they came across the boy. They had seen their friends pass Chuunin exams whilst their own progress languished, but that had changed in these past few years. They had formed their own rivalry, working and training together. Faced each other in their own Chuunin exams; and kept going from there. They weren't stopping anytime soon.

Naohiro's question brought the man back to reality. "It's just the twins now. Taisei and Tatsuki; you remember?" He asked, thinking back to the pair's encounter with the family. They had all been raw then, fresh from Tarō's loss. "Taisei's coping. He's been working with Katsurou; half bodyguard, half business partner. I think the kinship does him good." Even then, Taisei had seemed the best adjusted of his branch of the family. The best suited to dealing with all the hardships placed before him.

"Tatsuki... He throws himself into the work; it isn't something I hear much about." Kinsue would pause, unsure of what to say next. Tatsuki had demanded retribution for his young brother, only to be forced into peace by the Karagata. He had never let go of that hatred.
