It was yet another early morning in Kirigakure. Over the last few weeks, Kinsue had found himself swiftly getting back into the habits of an early riser. There was almost too much to be done, but he didn't mind. Where before he would have been loath to meet the challenges ahead; he more and more found himself raring to take them on.

Today’s challenge would be found within one of the public training grounds of Kiri's second tier. It was an open-field split in two. On one side lay open ground, ideal for spars and ninjutsu training. The other side was littered with equipment to aid in physical training. For his part, Kinsue wasn’t here to train. Instead, he had come for one specific shinobi: Aisu, Shihosu.

It was a situation beyond the Karagata’s comfort zone. He had taken on a handful of genin students as a Chuunin, much like everyone else, but so many years away from service had left him in a remarkably isolated position. Most who made it to his position had juniors asking for help with their new rivalry teams, or for their own progression, or simply who reported to them. Not so for Kinsue, whose old students had grown to or past him. Or simply died in the war if they hadn’t proven up to the challenge of the career.

Not so, until now.

It had been Naohiro who brought the kid to his attention, shamefully at that. Shihosu was a stain on the clan's honour to hear him tell it. Either way, his rivalry team had recently been torn apart and now he needed a firm touch to guide his potential as a shinobi. Kinsue had the trust of the right people to enter into the situation.

The man stood settled now; on the outskirts of the training ground. The Aisu had private space for training, but the boy and his clan were clearly well alienated. Not that it mattered much where this meeting would take place.

Kinsue would observe the boy’s training for now; sticking out like a sore thumb in his formal wear and passionless stillness. No doubt he would attract some queries, but he would get a good sense of Shihosu's potential before that happened.

Shihosu was raised to be a murdering ninja and although he was loyal to his clan he couldn't care less about clan politics such as how to dress, how one should speak, how one should wear their hairs. None of that mattered to the boy, the only thing that mattered to him was getting stronger until no one could deny his prowess. The weak shall be left in the cold.

His parents had grown weak and complacent like many of the Aisu according to him, they focused far too much on the politics of things rather than the forcibly taking what belonged to them, or so he believed. "Prepare yourself for you death!"

Shihosu had clashed many times with Naohiro, a man he knew was far stronger than him, though he found that he lacked the killer mentality needed to change the clan for the better. He was a great man for sure, but a lacking one according to the killer.

Thundra, who was training with another boy, pummeled his opponent, each strike taking him closer to killing the child, once he got him on the ground he would reach for his phurba and attempt to stab him through his throat if Kinsue did nothing to stop him.

It seemed that Kinsue had arrived amid an intense spar; one he was more than happy to observe. The boy was spirited, to be sure. While he didn't see any exceptional skill (especially not for someone who had spent two years as a genin), Kinsue had to admit that there was something to develop within him. Even now, he was dominating the spar against a younger boy he was pitted against. The size advantage seemed a factor, but more importantly, it was clear that the opponent just didn’t have the skills expected from a shinobi.

Shihosu got the boy on his back and Kinsue expected the spar would end right then. Yet the Aisu continued; pummeling the younger genin with no pause and even less quarter. The Karagata began to move closer at a brisk pace but kept silent to continue his observation. Then he pulled out some kind of ornate dagger, tensed to put a permanent end to the bout.

That wouldn’t do, not at all. Before Shihosu’s blow landed, a hand would grip tightly on his wrist. Kinsue’s strength was unremarkable for his rank. Some might even have called it pathetic. For the genin; it would be overwhelming and unbreakable, and he would find little means to resist.

”Enough.” Kinsue’s voice would be soft but firm as he directed his new student. ”Take a breath, then get off of him. This bout is over.” If Shihosu showed signs of obeying, Kinsue would release him from his grip. Tough times weren’t over for the weakling whose life he’d saved, and once the Aisu was docile he would have the chance to begin asking the questions on his mind. How had he slipped through the village's guardrails for quality, for a start.

Then there was his student. It was clear he had a lot of work to do.

The anger of being forced to stay at home when he couldäve been out trining was getting the best of him, his entire life had been pointing him in this direction, from the stories of the bloody mist to his parents teaching him tht mercy was for the weak, so when the estranged man came up to him and stopped him from delivering the killing blow, the boy was truthfully shocked, such a display of weakness form someone higher ranked than him was... Pathetic.

He kept the though to himself as he stepped off the bleeding genin and scoffed. "You should thank the stranger for saving your life, next time you won't be so lucky." His cold and deep voice boomed throughout the training ground, his voice sounded far older than his age portrayed him.

His deep seathed anger mixed with his cold exterior visibly appeared for Kinsue as sublimination. "And who are you?" The cold boy stared at Kinsue.

Kinsue looked the both of them over. Shihosu was defiant, riled up and angry that his kill had been denied. While his fury did not rise to the surface, it was laid bare beneath the Karagata’s sight. He wondered if the Aisu would have disobeyed his order if he thought he had the strength to carry it out. It seemed more likely than it had any right to; curbing that willfulness would need to be a priority; before the boy offended someone he wouldn’t be likely to walk away from.

The younger genin looked up at him weakly; dazed and badly wounded. He would live, at least.

The victim would need to be out of the way before the true work could begin. Kinsue would ignore Shihosu’s pointed question, and fix the younger of them with a stare that brokered only obedience.

”Your name.”

The boy looked up at him, struggling to find his voice. ”Toyo, bled for the family Hirohito,” he coughed involuntarily, releasing a spray of blood on the trampled grass. ”Born untouchable.”

Born untouchable. Kinsue’s eyebrow raised at that. ”Your rank.”

”Genin, sir.”

Theories were beginning to form in Kinsue’s mind. A former slave, it seemed. And as for why he had shown so little strength… ”How long have you served?”

”Two months.” A graduate from the most recent cycle. Kinsue considered for a moment, still as a rock as far as the two of them would see.

”You would die in the field, Toyo.” The words were not angry, not disinterested, not gentle. They were only true. The boy seemed to realise now that he was not yet safe. ”I- I’m sorry, Lord,” he mustered.

”You are not forgiven.” With that, Kinsue would turn away from Toyo. The trio had attracted a few curious eyes by now, and he picked out one of them – another child. The man raised his hand, beckoning the bystander over. ”Take him for treatment.”

The boy yelped his ascent and began to help Shihosu’s victim off the ground, but Kinsue was not yet done. He turned his gaze back to Toyo. ”My name is Kinsue, of the family Karagata. You are to seek out your Chuunin instructor once they discharge you. Tell them to report to me immediately.” Only now would emotion enter the man’s voice, for he thought he saw the root of the problem before him.

For a slave to act as a shinobi, he would have had to pass Kasai’s graduation exam not once, but twice. Toyo had earned a chance in the Karagata’s eye. On the other hand, if he had been left adrift; assigned to an instructor with no desire to mould the strength of someone beneath him… Kinsue would see, that was for sure.

Now, with the easier of his two problems dealt with, Kinsue looked back at Shihosu. He would take in how the boy had reacted to his decisions, and ask the only question that mattered.

”You wanted to kill him. Why?”

The cryomancer looked at Kinsue and was disgusted by his niceness, he spoked to the youth and semingly ignored what Shihosu had said, which caused him to roll his eyes, he cleared his throat and stood up, preparing to leave as Kinsue spoke to Toyo.

Shohosu was extremly uninterested in this situation as it wasn't leading him closer to his goals nor made him any stronger, so when the man was busy interrogating the kid the Aisu would turn his back on him and begin to walk towards the exit of the training compound, stopping only once he was finally asked a question.

Shihosu looked up towards the misty sky as he answered the question. "This is the rules of the Chigiri no Sato, the blood mist village where only the strong survive. If he can't survive against someone like me then he is just a waste of resources." Yuri, had already accepted that he would die one day, this was the way of the blood mist village, but due to the way Kinsue presented himself to the Aisu, he expected that he wasn't ready to die yet.

This made Kinsue appear rather weak towards Shihosu, not physically as he could sense it when he had grabbed him, but mentally.

It seemed his new student wasn’t impressed by his method, and even had been about to leave before Kinsue had called on him. It was far from the best start, but the Karagata knew the role would be trying. Most likely it would be weeks or more before he could begin to make headway, a slow, gradual, difficult process in all certainty. The only time to begin was now.

He took in the answer, unsurprised by the shallow simplicity of it. ”I see. You will stay, Aisu Shihosu. The two of us are not done yet." He moved closer to the young boy, eyeing him coldly as he did. ”Your instructors have abandoned you, so I’ve been brought in to try and salvage your teaching. The first lesson begins now.”

He stopped, planting his feet firmly 10 paces from the boy and raising his left hand in a ready stance. ”I wish to assess your skill against a competent opponent. Hold nothing back, but listen well. I shall instruct while we spar.” He didn’t expect Shihosu to surprise him, not after what he had already learned. An unremarkable service record and little development for two years spent as a genin. On the other hand, Kinsue’s years as a genin had been particularly inauspicious. Perhaps some leniency was owed.

As Kinsue waited for Shihosu to advance, he began to speak once more. He would continue even as their match began in earnest.

”You say you had the right to kill Toyo because he was weaker than you; that reasoning is incomplete. Toyo has served as a genin for a tiny fraction of your time. Even if he had developed well, in all likelihood he would still be less than someone in your cohort.”

Personally, Kinsue found it objectionable to kill a fellow shinobi in most circumstances others might have. Even experienced Jounin often failed to account for the circumstances that might bring one to strength. The boy would reject that argument if he were to make that, however, and Kinsue knew better than to hammer away at a lost cause. Better now to start small, with a case he knew was popular within the village.

At least if he got no further than that, he would still release a shinobi who could serve well; and offer more value than he took.

”The time they’ve spent as shinobi, recent wounds or similar setbacks, their ability to impart instruction to others, their capacity to improve: these must all be taken into account when determining one’s worth as a shinobi. You will learn to do so before delivering judgement in the future. I, in turn, will consider these in deciding whether you are worth investing in. If you fall short, I shall take your life myself.”

Round 1, Fight!
phpBB [video]

Yuri stopped walking, in fact, he stopped so abruptly that his foot continued to hover above the air, he gritted his teeth and let out a cold burst of air as he stepped down. "My name is Yuri to you, only the ones I allow get to call me by my real name." He turned around to stare blankly into Kinsue, he knew deep down that this man was ways above his league, though the anger that resided inside the boy was beyond palpable, he was about to say something stupid until he heard Kinsue speak about how his previous teachers had abandoned him, and how Kinsue was here to pick up where things had left off.

Another cold exhaust was released from his breath, sublimation began to cover Yuri as he frowned, though Kinsue wouldn't be able to see it due to him wearing a full mask, his town clearly conveyed his emotions. "Then so be it!" Shihosu stepped hard as he took a battle position, his heart raced yet his mind was still, he knew that this fight was one-sided, yet that didn't mean that he wouldn't at least attempt to put a dent in Kinsue's ego—Ironic.

"This fight will be your last!" He spoke his nindo and then channeled chakra to his feet, he immediately began to glide towards his opponent at [10] speed, he used this to clear the distance between the two, he would keep his body low and stop a few inches from Kinsue, he would sweep low with a roundhouse kick, he used the glide and sweep kick to set the teacher up for a surprise punch, knowing that he was probably slower than the Jounin he had to come up with a strategy that would allow him to catch him by surprise. He ended the combo with an uppercut,

To his surprise nothing seemed to work, though the leader continued to speak as if he wasn't even bothered with Shihosu, which infuriated him, he reached for his pouch and pulled out a phurba and began to slash towards Kinsue, all the while channeling chakra in preparation for the next jutsu. The phurba turned ice blue as he had placed a lot of hyuuton chakra on it, his aim wasn't to kill the teacher but to weaken him, with the jutsu now charged he would attempt to use his left hand to jab at him, his legs to kick the teacher followed by slashes of the weapon.

"You will do no such thing!" The genin coldly replied, Kinsue was a champion for trying to reason with Yuri but the young man had set his mind on becoming one of the more dangerous weapons of Chigiri no Sato and he could choose to either help raise the weapon or become another obstacle that Yuri had to overcome.

Stay vigilant and you will find a gap in his defenses, there has to be somewhere you can find your spot. Pressure him and make him pay for saying your name out loud! Shihosu's cold demeanor was part of his persona, his core, his true being and Kinsue would have to pay for trying to crack the ice.
