Oushi looked around the arena from his vantage point fifteen feet off the floor in the stands. The field was almost fifty yards in both directions, and Oushi wondered if it would be big enough for a battle. It seemed like they were about to throw a couple of children into a pit with a trained fighter, and he wondered again at the gall of a village that based its strength on the kind of barbarism that was about to take place.

"Then again, they had us take on a jounin, not that we had much of a chance." he mused, scratching the back of his head.

"Will they be here soon, Sekitan-sama?" the burly teen looked up from the floor where he crouched next to a massively oversized club. He looked to be about a head shorter than Oushi, but no less muscular, and the short shock of hair only accentuated his thick neck. Despite that, he had an honest face, if a little dumb.

"For the last time, Tadao, I'm only 5 years older than you. At least use my first name." Oushi sounded a little exasperated. He realized that his position within Iwa was one of status, but it irked him slightly when his subordinates took it so far.

"Right, Oushi-sama."

Oushi shook his head. This was going to be a long day.

Tobi's trembling was justified. His entire body felt the burden of his growing anxiety; each step forward was uncertain and each breath taken was a chore on its own. This... this was it. He had made it this far and with a team, no less. Even if he failed this fight, he had already gotten farther than he had ever hoped.

"No looking back now," he murmured as he stepped into the arena. His eyes scanned the area, and before settling onto Oushi, he noticed that he was the first one of his team to have arrived.

'Oh no... oh no, no, no!' Tobi, just the day before, had half-hoped to meet the bannin again before his exam. This--this wasn't how he wanted it to happen. With Oushi spectating, Tobi had one more thing to worry about beyond the dreadful laundry list of items that were already plaguing his feeble mind.

'Deep breaths, deep breaths,' he chanted to himself. He could only hope that his teammates were in better spirits.

Maru was the second to show up. He had already seen one of the people he was taking the exam with. Then he had seen someone standing in the center of the arena. Must be the one we're fighting, Maru thought. He looked over at his teammate slightly trembling. Wondering who his last teammate would be, he started to look around.

He saw another person standing in the sidelines. Most likely a spectator. Looking down at his side, he looked in his pouch and saw that he had all the weapons he stocked up the previous day. Wonderful. Then he began to look around again for his final teammate. He really hoped, for all things decent, that he got paired up with Omoi.

Omoi herself was hoping and praying on everything in existence that she got the team assignment she had wished for. She even held crossed fingers as she slowly pushed the doors open. At first, the bright lights coming from the ceiling of the arena blinded Omoi due to their brightness. Then, she was able to see...

And standing there were Maru and Tobika.

Her worry gave way to pleasant surprise and contented relief. "Maru-kun! Tobi-kun!" she called from the entrance. Dashing over to the two, she caught the two in possibly the goofiest launching group hug ever experienced by the two young men. "I'm so glad to see you two here. I was so nervous coming here!"

This was all Omoi needed. So long as she had her friends by her, they could overcome almost anything.

Oushi's face lit up as Tobi walked into the arena. He hadn't known that he was supervising his young friend's match, and any worries he had about the genin today being overwhelmed. Whether or not the other two were anything special, Tobi would at least be a match for Tadao. Tadao was, although promising as a fighter, an idiot. Being outsmarted by a group of genin might be good for his character.

As the other two genin trickled in, Oushi's smile narrowed. The final two members of the team were a girl with blue hair, and an equally small blond boy, neither of which looked very impressive. He'd seen this kind of thing before; village officials often grouped genin that showed less promise together for their chuunin exams to lower their chances of success and weed them out for another year. But, Oushi reminded himself silently, he hadn't been much to look at as a genin either. Taking a deep breath, he hopped down from the stands, landing lightly a few feet away from his chuunin subordinate, although the floor shook slightly with his impact.

"Alright kids, can I have your attention for a second?" he motioned for the 3 genin to gather around. "As some of you know, my name is Sekitan Oushi, I'll be proctor for your exam today."

He smiled at Tobi and nodded before continuing, putting a hand out to Tadao, ushering him forward.

"This is Tadao, he'll be your opponent. Coincidentally, this match will serve as part of his initial application to join the ranks of the Kinjuu, so all of you have something to prove here. But most importantly, I want you all to remember that winning here is not your goal. You are all here to exhibit your skill as shinobi, so do your best."

He walked back toward the stands and leapt to the top, sitting on the edge before shouting down,

"Genin, you have 20 minutes to defeat your opponent by any means you can muster. Tadao, you have the same amount of time to incapacitate these genin without maiming them. I remind you that a shinobi's skill lies not only in brute strength, but precision as well. Good luck!"

The big chuunin looked startled when Oushi had essentially told him that he wouldn't be allowed to go all out. He looked helplessly at his club for a second before throwing it aside vehemently, causing it to smash forcefully into the wall below Oushi. Clearly, he didn't like having his hands tied, and it was affecting his ability to go first. He dropped down into a fighting stance and looked down at his would-be opponents expectantly.

If there was any time for a change of attitude, now would be it. It'd be grand if things could have been that easy for Tobi. He wanted so badly to give himself a hard shake, rid himself of the jitters, and man up for once in his life. A dream. All Tobi could do was stammer a few words, nod to his partners, and prepare himself for a fight that would make or break him at this tender age.

"H-hi, Omoi... Maru." The genin's voice was small, caught up in his chest as his words struggled to come out. Greetings had to be quick, and there was no time for explanations (mostly about how he knew Maru's name) anymore. The three had twenty minutes to eliminate their opponent; twenty minutes to fight harder than they had ever fought before.

It took Tobi a few seconds to bring himself to attention and finally get started. The night before he had gone over numerous strategies and found several he would've liked to try. Well, now that he was standing there, his knees rattling under him, he knew nothing was going to turn out as he had planned it in the quiet of his room.

Yet, he had to do something. A deep breath proceeded a set of handseals. From Tobi's finger tips, five, fist-sized balls of fire rose up and surrounded him in a circle. With this base, he knew he would have something to go off after he saw what his partners, and opponent, were going to do.

By focusing chakra into them, the user is able to move the ring of fireballs as high or low as s/he is tall. The fireballs are generally useless on their own, but can be used to deter taijutsu fighters from attacking at the risk of getting burned. The will-o-wisps last three (3) posts before dissipating harmlessly.

Maru listened attentively to Oushi speak. Maru didn't really know him up close and personal. Maru just knew him as the village Bannin. And that was enough to put him at full attention. Still, he wet on, introducing the opponent and giving a 20 minute time limit. 20 minutes? Fair enough. Maru looked at Omoi and smiled before nodding to her. Then he looked at the third boy, who for some reason knew his name, as he got his jutsu underway. The fire seemed...... defensive. Knowing Omoi was a support person, this team might actually have a good teamwork going. If only they had a strategy. Maru made a few hand signs of his own after seeing his opponent toss away his weapon. Why? No idea. After making the signs, Maru proceeded to vomit out molten glass from his mouth. He then knelt down and fixed it in a shape before it hardened. He formed a katana, and stood back up, showing he'd use whatever was necessary.

Omoi would have introduced Maru to Tobika if they had been given the time. It seemed that Oushi wanted to start things off rather quickly. Omoi was put at odds at this point; she had only a few offensive jutsu to speak of. There were very few things she herself could actually do to attack the opponent. Normally, a feeling of hopelessness would begin to swell up within her, but she remained confident despite this setback. She knew she couldn't afford to let her teammates down. She would give what she could.

Omoi crouched low, making a seal while reaching into her pack and grabbing some wire. While her illusion hopefully kept their opponent distracted, Omoi reached into her pack and grabbed hold of her wire, channeling her chakra into two different strands as they slithered out like snakes. For now, she could only stand by, but perhaps she'd find an opening eventually.

The user will slowly lower themselves into a crouch while holding a handseal. Seeing this will cast a genjutsu upon any viewers. They will see the user continue to sink into the ground. At that point several dark, oily shapes will emerge from the surrounding walls, trees, or whatever there is and attack from different directions. These attacks cannot harm the viewer but may confuse them and make them feel disoriented. Meanwhile, the user of this jutsu can attack; he or she will look like a simple black shape, gliding in and out of the ground or boulders, so he or she is relatively well hidden. If any of the servants are successfully attacked it will disrupt the genjutsu and lower the post count by 1. Attacking the user, despite his or her disguise, will end the jutsu. This jutsu will last for 3 posts otherwise.

And just like that, nobody was moving. The genin, rather than attacking their slightly off-guard opponent, had done exactly what he had done and gone on the defensive, making everyone look just a tad foolish. Seeing this, Oushi laughed, which Tadao seemed to take offense to as he snorted and ripped off a series of handseals. No sooner had he finished than his his muscular leg powered into the ground, burying itself up to the ankle. But his jutsu was a success, and the arena around him rocked with the force of the impact. Unless the genin started working together now, the match would be a quick one.

Unfortunately, he had seen and ignored Omoi's handseals, which meant that as he was attempting to free his leg, he barely noticed the genin's sudden absence or the sudden appearance of some rather poorly rendered versions of herself appearing from the walls and floor.

The moment the ground started quaking, Tobi knew he had a quick way out of it, but... to expend that much chakra early on wouldn't only be a waste to him, but it'd make him a waste to his team. Instead, he looked around the area in desperation, seeking something sturdy; anything to keep his balance, because he was a couple shakes away from being on his rear and vulnerable.

There was nothing--no, wait, there was. He did his best to waddle over to Maru, and without warning, he interlocked his arm with the other boy's and looked to Omoi soon after, motioning for her to join them to do the same. If there was one thing Tobi learned in smithing, it was that nothing was strong or stable on its own. Even if they weren't able to tough the duration of the quake (which Tobi had no idea about), they raised their chances by sticking together.

"J-Just... bear with me, okay?" Tobi said to Maru, his voice trembling from either fear or the intensity of the quake.

Luckily for Tobi, both Maru and Omoi were short, so he took the safe option of making his ring of Will-o-wisps float around his head, which was several inches higher than either of his teammates and thus saving him a possible accident.

[OoC: Since the quake really does only last one post, you can probably move on and do whatever in your post, Magma, instead of sticking with Tobi. Don't want you to feel like you're forced into this position. :p]

The floor started shaking from the chuunin's jutsu. Maru fell to the ground on his knees, not really seeing that coming. It shook him up a bit, and he looked around to see how everyone else handled it. Tobi came waddling over to him as the ground shook and told him and Omoi to hold hands. Maru did as he wanted to see how it would turn out. Maru managed to stay up until after the shaking stopped. Oh I see, Maru thought. Make ourselves steady. Maru smiled and nodded at his tactic, and then let go.

After making a few hand signs, Maru reached in his pouch. He took a deep breath and started to fire Senbon from his mouth. Maru also added some chakra to the senbon in case he tried to block it.

When the floor beneath the genin began to quake, Omoi fought hard to steady herself. She would have fallen if she hadn't seen and heard Tobi's cue. Interlocking arms, they braced themselves against each other, keeping themselves stable as the jutsu ended.

Omoi was determined to end this defensive battle. She started by moving one of the shadowy versions of herself to block the opponent's view of the senbon that were headed his way while reaching into her pack for kunai with an exploding tag and throwing it directly beneath, Maru's senbon. As soon as it hit the ground between Tadao's feet, she would detonate it, hopefully causing some damage.

Unfortunately, Tadao wasn't that stupid. He'd realized at this point that he had left himself open, (although he was still oblivious that one of the genin had seemingly multiplied, or that Maru’s Chakra Infusion had been completely ineffective because it only worked on handheld weapons) and left off trying to unstick his leg to form more handseals. In a second, it became apparent why: his skin took on a texture not unlike granite, although at exactly that moment, the tag went off in his face, pulverizing the ground and rocks he’d already loosened up and freeing both the chuunin and his foot.

His yell of surprise was replaced a few seconds later by cough and a growl from the cloud of dust. Had the genin been able to see what he was doing, they’d see that he was back on his knees after being knocked flat on his back, forming still more handseals. This time, however, it was clear why he’d used his first technique: to loosen the rocks and ground around him into something a little more malleable. As the dust cleared, the ground around him could be seen turning into thick mud, stretching out toward the genin at an alarming rate. If they weren’t careful, they’d be caught right in the middle.

From the stands, Oushi nodded silently in approval. There was a reason Tadao was a chuunin, and it was more than his brute strength.

Liquid. No, worse:

"Mud," Tobi uttered, dread choking him up. It wasn't the same as dealing with something as simple as water, given how fast and thickly it flowed. Yet, it was still liquid... and that's when it hit him.

'Stay to the high ground!' Oushi's words rang through Tobi's head. It had worked when avoiding that flooded wetland in River Country, and he had a hunch that it'd work now, but... where was the high ground?

Frantically, Tobi's eyes searched for something that either was or could function as this superior positioning point. There wasn't anything. Not in his reach, anyway.

'Always gotta make my own stuff,' he groaned inwardly.

As he fished out two kunai, grabbed his ax, and began his dash toward the wall of the arena, he called to Maru and Omoi, "Grab kunai, a sword--anything that's strong enough to dig into the wall and sturdy enough to hold you. We need to get onto higher ground."

Tobi arrived at the wall and immediately jammed his kunai about eight inches apart and five feet high, and then balanced his ax atop them. The set up would help to displace his weight, and it did so quite well after he leaped onto it.

From here, Tobi remained defensive. His Will-o-wisps had faded and he had to make another, fresh set before he continued. Of the five floating fireballs, he made two of them pink and two of them purple and sent them ten yards away from his position. One pink and one purple wisp were sent to the northwest, the other two to the northeast, while the uncolored one remained at his side.

After all was said and done, Tobi performed a final set of handseals and initiated one of his genjutsu. If Tadao were to glance at the pink wisps, he would be put under Tobi's distracting illusion.

After forming a single handseal, Tobi is able to change the hue of his Will-o-Wisps by controlling the Katon chakra in them. This jutsu is primarily for lighting purposes and specific genjutsu triggers, but adds nothing physical other than color to the tiny fireballs. He can change the color of one or multiple Will-o-Wisps at a time. The Will-o-Wisp's color can only be changed a single time and lasts as long as they do (three [3] posts).

Katon • Will-o-Wisp: Direct [Fire Element • Will-o-Wisp: Direct]
» D-Rank Ninjutsu «
Prerequisite: Katon • Will-o-Wisp: Will-o-Wisp Creation
After forming the needed handseals, Tobi is able to send his Will-o-Wisps in a selected direction. The tiny fireballs travel in a straight line at a speed equal to Tobi's control stat to a maximum distance of 15 yards from where Tobi is currently located. Additionally, he can send individual Will-o-Wisps in different directions and can call them back to them at any time. This technique lasts for as many posts as the Will-o-Wisps do (three [3] posts).

Katon • Will-o-Wisp: Grace Under Fire [Fire Element • Will-o-Wisp: Grace Under Fire]
» D-Rank Genjutsu «
Prerequisite: Katon • Will-o-Wisp: Will-o-Wisp Creation and Katon • Will-o-Wisp: Hue
Triggered by viewing a pink Will-o-Wisp, this genjutsu puts the target under the impression that the Will-o-Wisps are untouchable. After forming the necessary handseals, the Will-o-Wisps created in the Will-o-Wisp Creation technique will float toward the opponent and dance around them. If attacked, they will gracefully dodge the assault and continue providing a distraction. In actuality, the Will-o-Wisps are still surrounding Tobi, and can be seen as such to anyone not under this illusion's influence. This illusion lasts for three (3) posts unless broken out of sooner.

Maru saw the mud and thought one thing. Run. He hurried towards a wall after hearing Tobi's warning. He wasn't the fastest person around, so he used Shunshin to speed himself up a bit. But he wasn't about to just stand on his glass weapons. He didn't think they were durable enough. Instead, he ran up the wall, with the help of chakra in his feet, and supported himself up there by jamming a kunai into the wall. He knew it wouldn't hold for long, so he had to think of something quick.

Stupid mud, he thought, reaching into his case, pulling out two shuriken. Swinging himself around as he continued to hand around, he looked for the chuunin. Spotting him, he tossed a single shuriken. Then a few seconds later, he tossed the second one behind it, making it follow the same path.

Then, he would reach into his pouch and take out five senbon. He tossed them into the air and watched them go into the muddy ground tip first. He then smiled and he focused on them, making them sink into the ground. That would be useful later. But for now, he hoped the kunai would keep him up.

*Shunshin no Jutsu [Body Flicker Technique]
D-Ranked Ninjutsu
Shunshin no Jutsu is a basic Ninjutsu technique. The ninja will appear and disappear in an instant, allowing them to retreat or attack suddenly. To facilitate the movement the ninja will often use nearby elements such as mist, sand or leaves to mask their appearance or disappearance.

*Kinobori no Waza [Act of Tree Climbing]
D-Ranked Ninjutsu
Kinobori no Waza, the art of tree climbing serves a dual purpose. Taking part in Kinobori Shugyou (Tree Climbing Training) helps a ninja learn how to focus their chakra, and it also teaches them how to run up trees and walk up walls. The training helps the ninja learn how to focus just the right amount of chakra to a particular part of their body. The amount needed to climb is small but it must be precise. The feet are said to be the hardest location to learn how to master chakra focusing. So by gaining the art of this skill, the ninja will be able to have any jutsu available to him (theoretically) because she can focus chakra as needed. Next the chakra released must be properly controlled.

*Kage Shuriken no Jutsu [Shadow Shuriken Technique]
D-Ranked Ninjutsu
Kage Shuriken no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilizing a giant Fuuma Shuriken or normal shuriken. When throwing the shuriken, the ninja will also throw a second giant shuriken to hide in the shadow of the first. The hidden secondary shuriken can then approach the target without their being aware.

C-Ranked Ninjutsu
Prerequisites: Character must have nails or senbon.
Ninpou • Gyorai Shin is a Ninjutsu technique utilized by Maru. Removing nails and/or senbon from their pocket, the user will throw them into the air and then plant them tip first into the earth. Using his chakra the nails and/or senbon will travel into the ground. Then at their discretion, they can fire the nails from the ground through the feet of their target to nail them in place. They can then fire the remaining nails and/or senbon from the ground to cut their target to pieces.

Omoi took heed of the large flood of mud that quickly gushed towards her and her teammates. Similarly following Tobi and Maru's example, she retracted her wire and ended the jutsu, taking to the walls and using her chakra to adhere to them. "Close your eyes when I throw my flash bomb," Omoi warned quietly, loud enough for her partners to hear, but too quiet to alert her enemy to.

Instead of simply bracing herself against the wall, she used the opportunity to start running along its length, pulling another item from her pack, this time a flash bomb. Tossing it directly at Tadao, she reached back with her other hand to fish out a kunai tied to an exploding tag from her pack. Hopefully, he would be too busy executing his mud jutsu to make a defense. Making a mental image of his location on the battlefield in her mind, she closed her eyes and detonated her flash bomb in front of Tadao (before it hit the ground), immediately tossing her tag loaded kunai directly behind Tadao. If her flash bomb caused him to jump back (which she was hoping it might), the tag would hit its target while the weapon's approach would be obscured by the light.

She detonated the tag as soon as the light died down. At the very least, he might fall forward into his own mud.

As it turned out, the genins’ tactical retreat had been the better part of valor. No sooner had the mud field stopped moving forward, Tadao came barreling out of the dust cloud, running along the top of the sludge at a surprising pace, given his rock armor was still weighing him down considerably.

Once again, he made the mistake of ignoring the handseals made by the genin, but this time the results were much more immediate. He paused for a second as the little fires danced before his eyes, obscuring his view. Alone, the attack would have only stopped him for a minute before he simply ignored them, but it slowed him down just long enough for Omoi’s flash tag to do its job.

The big chuunin grunted with frustration as the blinding light filled his eyes, and his arms instinctively began waving as he tried to keep his balance, completely in the dark. Unfortunately, Maru’s attack had been next to useless, and the two shuriken he threw glanced harmlessly off of Tadao’s granite skin.

The deafening roar of the second explosive tag drowned out Tadao’s own roar of surprise as he was tossed blindly, face forward, into the mud that he’d made. Had he been unprotected, the blast would likely have been a decisive blow, ending the match.

“That’s…not bad” Oushi murmured quietly from the stands. He’d nodded sagaciously as the genin took to the walls, led by Tobi, and even smiled as Tadao was forced to stop and swat at thin air as Tobi’s genjutsu distracted him. As shy as Tobi was, he was taking the lead in this match, and it impressed the bannin a little so see how far he’d come. Then again, the other two genin were making their own cases as well, and Oushi’s keen eye hadn’t missed the trap that Maru had set up in all the commotion. The team of misfits seemed to be working rather well together.

Hopefully the genin hadn’t been too distracted by the explosion, because Tadao had now sunk under the mud, and could no longer be seen. After a few seconds though, his muddy form appeared from the mire and began slogging through the mud toward the area where the genin were camped out.

*Suimen Hokou no Waza [Act of Water Surface Walking]
D-Ranked Ninjutsu
A variation on the Kinobori no Waza (Act of Tree Climbing), the art of water surface walking allows a ninja to walk on water as if it was a solid surface. Focusing an even amount of chakra out of the soles of their feet, they can balance themselves on the very surface of the water.

*Doton • Iwa Sentou Bunshin [Earth Element • Rock Combat Clone]
C-Rank Ninjutsu
Prerequisite: Doton Bunshin
In order to create the clone, the user must perform a set of seals and slam their hands on the ground and the clone will rise up within five feet of the user. The original rock clone jutsu’s major drawback is that the clones lack speed due to their weight. By using a bit more chakra, the clone is able to control its density, giving it the ability to move at a speed of 4. However, due to its hardened body, it has the ability to hit at a strength stat of 5, but can only perform taijutsu techniques. The clone can take a single medium strength ninjutsu technique, aside from Suiton and Raiton. With Suiton, it takes two medium strength techniques, while it would only take up to two weak Raiton techniques before breaking.

*Doton • Moguragakure no Jutsu [Earth Element • Mole Hiding Technique]
C-Rank Nintaijutsu
Doton • Moguragakure no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilizing the Earth Element. This technique enables the ninja to burrow into the ground and hide out of sight by performing a set of hand seals. This allows them to avoid attack or travel underground, but only up to ten feet below the earth. With this technique the user can only stay underground for three posts before needing to come back up to breathe. Also, since it takes a while to start, it must be used from the middle of the post till the end, and then it's only at the end where they are underground. The distance traveled by this technique cannot extend past the average of the user’s ninjutsu and control, multiplied by three in meters. The speed at which they travel equals the average of the user’s strength and speed. Using this technique does create a tunnel of sorts, allowing the user to create a series of tunnels for various purposes.

Eyes wide and heart pounding, Tobi looked for the quickest way out of the situation. His Will-o-wisps remained on the field, and after he was sure Tadao had been affected by the genjutsu, he directed them back toward his position. They sat several feet from where he and Maru were camped, and where Tadao was soon to be.

Tobi grabbed his ax from under his feet and leaped down and started to run just as Tadao came within his proximity. The four wisps that Tobi had abandoned lingered on the position for moments after he fled the area; riding on the hope that Tadao was on point and Maru had already moved on, Tobi detonated them altogether.

All the explosions going off in the arena had left the genin with an unpleasant ringing in his ears to add to the exhaustion that was creeping throughout his body. He hadn't much left in him, yet he had never felt so determined to hold on, clinging to what strength he could find.

Soon Tobi came to the middle of the arena, knowing he hadn't much left to offer his teammates from there.

'I hope Omoi and Maru have a plan... gah,' his inner voice whimpered, suddenly feeling very helpless. All he could think of to do was to provide more of a distraction.

Taking out six shuriken, Tobi imbued them each with a little chakra and tossed them out at the chuunin. These projectiles weren't meant to hit; Tobi anticipated their paths to curve past Tadao, giving him something to think about instead.

Hearing Omoi's warning, Maru quickly shut his eyes as the flash went off. He watched his eyes go from dark to red and knew the flash was freaking bright. Maru then put his feet to the wall and tried to pull his kunai loose. Instead, it broke, leaving him to stare at his tip less weapon. Well, that was the price of glass ones. Still, it as good enough for his next tactic. He watched the chuunin turn into mud and charge his way. Taking out another kunai with the broken one he held, he cracked them in his hands and broke them into small pieces as he hopped over to the side and tossed them at the muddy chuunin. He knew it wouldn't do anything for now. He just had those, and the senbon underground, set up for a later time. As for now, his main tactic was to avoid the opponent as much as possible until his defense lowers. When Tobi's explosives went off, Maru also had a loud ringing in his ear. It was louder since he was closer and it caused his Wall Walking jutsu to cancel out. Maru fell about 5 feet to the ground, landing next to the muddy chuunin and slowly got up to is feet, his sight slightly blurry.

Despite her total lack of offensive capabilities, Omoi was feeling pretty good about the battle. Her tactics seemed to be doing some sort of damage. When Tadao sunk beneath the mud, she had hoped that maybe, just maybe, they might have finished the match.

These fantasies were crushed when he appeared to rise from the ground, trudging his way through the mud. Jumping down and reaching back into her pack, the wires she had retracted earlier stretched out once more, the fuuton chakra coating the ends of the wires. Jumping down next to Tobi, she lashed out with the wires at the chuunin that trudged through the brown muck, one wire slicing from each side so that he couldn't dodge. Meanwhile, her hand remained in her pack, her middle finger wrapped around the end of a third exploding tag kunai.

The explosion, this time twice as large as the first few, rocked the arena as little pieces of rock scattered across the landscape. Inexplicably, Omoi’s attack seemed to grasp at nothing but air, and in the silence that followed, the only sound that could be heard was the sucking sound of mud slipping down a hole in the floor where Tadao had seemingly gone down just moments before, followed shortly by the thump of Maru’s body hitting the floor.

The arena was eerily quiet for a moment before the floor next to the halpless genin erupted, Tadao’s bearlike paw shot out and grabbed his ankle, dragging him down until his head was the only thing showing.

All was explained a moment later as the dust cleared and Tadao himself crawled out of the ground a few feet away from Maru, looking irritated as he dusted himself off. There was a pile of rubble where his muddy clone had been when the explosion went off, and he himself looked dirty but otherwise unharmed.

Clearly, he hadn’t expected the genin to go moving about the arena and setting off more explosions. His plan had most likely been to keep them pinned down and busy with the clone while he snuck up under them. Unfortunately, the tactic had only worked on Maru, who had been foolish enough to stick around and get caught in the blast.

“Uh-oh...” Oushi could see by the look on the chuunin’s face that he was about to settle into a rhythm, and it didn’t bode well for the remaining members of the party.

Tadao performed one last series of hand seals, and disappeared into the ground. A second later, he reappeared, this time right behind Omoi as he reached out to wrap her up in a bear hug. She’d been attacking using explosive tags so far, so getting this close to her quickly seemed to be his next tactic.

Still, he was looking winded, and at this distance it was easy to see he was sweating heavily.

Doton • Shinjuu Zanshu no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilizing the Earth Element. The ninja will travel through the ground to appear below their target after performing a set of seals with the intention of pulling them into the ground. Since the user is physically pulling a person into the ground, if the target has a higher strength stat than the user, the target may resist being pulled into the ground. Once in the ground their target is thus immobilized, unless they have a strength stat of at least four. Unless the user can somehow hear or sense the target while underground, if the opponent moves as the user goes underground then the user will not be able to accurately grab the target. The maximum distance that can be traveled using this technique is fifteen meters, and lasts as long as Doton • Moguragakure no Jutsu allows.

Tobi's heart pounded loudly within his chest. He saw what Tadao had done and mentally slapped himself for not realizing the chuunin's trick sooner.

Now came the waiting. Tobi didn't move from his spot, too scared to do anything after witnessing Tadao's disappearance. There was no way of knowing where he went or where he'd come up a-

"Omoi!" Tobi shouted, his eyes widening as he saw Tadao rise up behind her. The moment the ground had shifted and he realized what was happening, Tobi had already put himself into gear, his feet igniting with a massive amount of burning fire as he rocketed directly at Omoi and Tadao.

The boost had given him just enough speed to make it to Omoi before she was grabbed, grasping her in his arms as he zoomed past. As he came by the chuunin, he could only hope that the extremely hot Katon he had blasting out of his feet had burned him on the way through.

Unfortunately for Tobi, he had acted on instinct and had forgotten that he was trying to conserve his chakra. At least Omoi was safe as he set her down fifteen feet away from where they had been. He canceled his jutsu, looked at Omoi for only a second, and then faced Tadao. The chuunin had gone and activated Tobi's fight or flight instincts, and it made him just jittery enough to burn to a crisp the next thing that came near him.

The Skyrocket jutsu is a simple-looking, yet complex and draining technique developed by Tobi. To begin, he will form the necessary handseals and focus chakra into his hands and feet. Once this is initiated, the chakra in his feet will erupt into flames and thrust him wherever he chooses to go (like a jet pack). The chakra in his hands can be ignited during this flight (which can reach a height of 30 feet in combat), acting as thrusters to help him turn and slow down. While performing this technique, Tobi moves quickly (+3 speed), but finds his taijutsu (-2) and control (-1) over other jutsu to be hampered over its five (5) post duration. However, it can be canceled at any time (even mid-flight), and the amount of chakra it drains depends on how long it has been active. Additionally, those standing too close behind or under him while he's beginning the jutsu or in the air are susceptible to being burned (third degree).

As the dust surrounded Maru, he was at first confused as to why he couldn't seem to move. After the dust cleared, he noticed he was buried underground. His eyes widened as he saw he was in the trap. Crap, he thought. He tried to move, but failed. Horribly. He figured this was his punishment for trying to set up traps to distract his opponent and not pay attention to Tobi's bomb. Looking around, he noticed the chuunin over by Omoi. Seeing Tobi rush in an get her out of the way made him sigh of relief. This was really bad. For him at least. Might as well sit tight, he thought. he looked up and continued to watch the match.

Omoi couldn't see amidst the explosion and the dust being kicked up by the clone, which had suddenly exploded. When the dust finally cleared, the sight of Maru's unconcious form buried in the floor made her blood run cold as she grit her teeth in a chaotic mix of anger and dread. "Maru-kun!" she breathed, her eyes soon shifting focus to the chuunin, who had quickly sunk underground.

Omoi cursed inwardly as he melded in with the ground beneath their feet. She had no way of knowing where he'd-

It was only her twitch reflexes that allowed her to react to the hulking form that rose up from behind her, spinning around on her heel to face him. Even then, it wouldn't have been enough to evade the bear hug from the chuunin. By the time she had her hand around the kunai and had brought it out, however, Tobi scooped her up with an unprecedented burst of speed. Not letting this chance go by, she immediately dropped the kunai, both it and the exploding tag attached to it neatly landing between Tadao's legs. Not half a second later, she detonated it, giving just enough distance between the genin and the tag.

Not moments after they skidded to a stop, Omoi put her left hand into her pack, keeping hold of another flash bomb, the small orb clutched in her palm and hidden from view as she withdrew her hand, weary of any sort of vibration that might signal the chuunin's return.

[OoC: Godmooooooooooooooooode]

If Tadao had been burned by Tobi’s flames, nobody would ever find out, because he just barely had time to understand what was happening and cross his beefy arms in front of him before Omoi’s tag went off in his face, flinging him several yards and kicking up another massive cloud of dust. However, if there were any lingering thoughts about the match ending there, they were almost immediately dispelled.

A low, almost animal growl was rising from the cloud, and as the growl rose in intensity, the floor of the arena began to shake. Suddenly, the top of the cloud exploded as an inhuman shape burst from the top of it, high into the air and across the arena toward where Tobi and Omoi had landed.

To the keen eye, there was a brief interval where the shape could be better identified; it was Tadao, but transformed into something horrible and massive. He was cased from head to foot in stone body armor, not too unlike those more commonly seen used by many Iwa shinobi, but this one had made him enormous, and the air around him seethed with chakra. In that moment, it seemed very likely that the two genin were about to be wiped off the floor with a mop.

Then the floor in front of them erupted. An impact crater appeared where Oushi and Tadao collided, and the force of the blast had blown the dust completely away, leaving only the two men standing fist to fist in the middle of the oversized indentation in the floor, Oushi glaring up at his subordinate. A second later, there was a sound of crumbling rock and Tadao’s armor, along with Tadao, fell to the floor. The chuunin lay as if dying, his chest heaving up and down as he wheezed.

“Would you like to explain just what in the hell you were about to do?” Oushi rarely looked angry, or even stern, but he was both now, and it was just a bit disturbing. The look seemed almost unnatural on his face.

“I’m sorry, Oushi-sama. I just…I think I blacked out. Did I hurt anyone? I…ohhh, my head!”

Oushi snorted, turning around to Tobi and Omoi.

“I am impressed. And I don’t say that often, to anybody. You managed to hold your own against a much stronger opponent and what’s more, you took the fight to him. To me, your skills and your ability to work as a team exhibits anything I could ask from a chuunin.”

He stopped to smile at Tobi, who was still standing oddly close to Omoi.

“I guess they’ll send you your commendations within a week or so. Tobi, why don’t you swing by the restaurant later? I’ll buy you lunch.”

Having dismissed two of his charges, Oushi walked over to where Maru had been drug under, and unceremoniously pulled him out by the scruff of his clothes before setting him down and sitting cross legged in front of him.

“Alright. So, what happened?”

Unlike more common Doton armor techniques, this one not only cover’s the user’s body, but creates a new one for them on a much larger scale, roughly three times the size of a normal human. Consequently, users of this technique suffer from a massive loss of Stamina (-3) but exchange it for a substantial increase in their Strength (+3).

Maru watched from the hole in the ground as the chuunin got ready to unleash his attack. He continued to struggle to get out of the trap he was set in and all he saw was an explosion. After the blast, the bannin from before stood in the chuunin's way having blocked his attack. The fight had ended. Then the test was over. Maru saw the bannin address Tobi and Omoi and he guess he told them that they did well and passed. All of which he wondered why he was still in the hole.

After Tobi and Omoi left, Oushi came up to him and dragged him out of the hole easily and dropped him to the ground, sitting across from him. Hearing his question, Maru kinda drifted his sight to the right a little, not wanting to make eye contact. After a gulp, Maru decided it would be best to answer as to not upset him. Though, he wasn't sure how to answer. He didn't even know what happened. "I guess.... I screwed up. Badly," he finally answered. "I was more focused on setting traps that I didn't notice what my team was doing. First, Omoi's flash. Then Tobi's bomb." He looked away for a bit, then looked back at him. "Yeah... That's it I guess."

"Well at least you're capable of learning from mistakes. That's something." Oushi was looking uncomfortable, and with good reason: Maru had failed his exam, miserably. There was no way he could pass, no matter how the bannin looked at it.

"I think what you need to remember is that no plan lasts more than ten seconds in most combat situations. All of us except the most skilled tacticians need to be able to adapt, and you just plain didn't." Oushi looked thoughtful for a second, looked up at the ceiling and scratched his neck.

"I'll tell you what, though. I'm going to give you four weeks. If, after those four weeks are up, you can prove to me that you're capable of earning the title of chuunin, then I'll put in your recommendation. Sound fair enough?"
the big man stuck out his hand, indicating that he was giving his word.

Maru got off his butt, but stayed seated, getting onto his knees. He listened to what Oushi had to say about his mess ups and remained silent. Seeing the look in his eye, Maru had a feeling he failed. Even still, he took in mind what Oushi was telling him and nodded when he was done speaking. After hearing he was given a change, Maru's depressed expression quickly changed into a hopeful one. Not wanting to seem too excited about this opportunity, Maru simply nodded and extended his hand, taking Oushi's and shaking it.

"Yes sir," he answered.

Oushi's massive hand enveloped Maru's as he stood and hauled the boy to his feet. He had the slightest feeling that he was being much too lenient, but it seemed like the sort of decision Yasui would have made. After all, he technically wasn't passing his exam until he proved he could.
