The day had been hot and bright before, but standing before the sight of the flaming three story apartment complex made the rest of the day seem like a cool springtime day. Of course, in the wasteland that was rock country, there was seldom any such days, so.... Anyway, we're getting off topic. Our hero, Tobi, stood facing down a building that was too hot for professional firefighters to get into. The heat alone had caused the men around him to appear as though they had been swimming, and the flames licked at the skin of anyone who came close enough. The question was, would Tobi find the courage (or curiosity) to save the day, or would he run and hide, his tail between his legs?

Now, running away with his tail between his legs did seem like something Tobi might do if there weren't peoples' lives in danger. This was the case here, and there wasn't going to be any cowardice on his end. He had the means to deal with this issue better than anyone else there, and to hide that would have been a crime.

Looking around at the people outside of the blaze, Tobi's heart sunk. They were trained professionals--how was he going to do any better than they could, fire proof or not? No, now was not the time for his complexes to get the better of him. This was a chance to do a good thing for his village, and that was what drove him into the building.

Without a word to anyone in the vicinity, Tobi rushed forward and threw himself into the burning structure. In any other instance, Tobi would have relished the chance to be swallowed in a raging fire, but his thoughts were focused on what he had to do.

Once he was inside, he listened to hear for any cries for help.

From behind, Tobi would hear the yells of firefighters trying to stop him from throwing his life away, but it was too late, now the total of kids that were thought to be in the building totaled six, including Tobi. In the main hallway, the shinobi had to make his first decision; start on the first floor and fork his way up or head to one of the two floors above first? Time was of the essence and each second of indecision brought the six inside the building closer to death.

Tobi wasn't much of a decision maker, and the choice already seemed obvious. The building's structure would likely begin to collapse from the top first. Additionally, making his way to the main floor last would put him in a better position to get everyone out at once.

Wasting no time, Tobi pushed his way to the top floor, ignoring the licking flames that consumed the building. Even though they didn't affect him, the smoke was still thick, forcing him to pull his sweater up over his mouth.

Tobi's decision was immediately rewarded. As soon as he reached the top floor, he could hear the cries of three girls. At the end of the longhallway, with only a long row flames between them and Tobi, three young children were huddled togrther calling for hel, coughing, and crying. The question, though, was how did Tobi expect to get them all out?

Following the cries, Tobi moved his way down the hallway. Their crying and coughing pulled at his heart strings and he knew he had to get them out of here as quickly as he could. The question remained: how? Well, Tobi was well aware that he was strong enough to manage carrying three children, but there were still dangerous areas where the smoke and fire had taken over. What was it that kept him safe? Aside from his natural abilities, his clothes were a key factor in his fireproofing--and there was his answer.

Taking off his sweater, he bent down to the scared girls and shoved it toward one of them.

"I'm here to get you out. I can carry all three of you, but one of you is going for a piggyback ride, so put that sweater on. It'll keep you safe from the fire." He scooped up two of the girls in his arms before inviting the other to get on his back after she had put on his sweater.

Past the wall of flames, Tobi had all three girls out of immediate danger, but there was no way to tell how muh carbon monoxide they had inhaled already so the next major choice came. Was he to continue searching or immediately take the girls out of the building. After all, what good would it be to prevent them from burning to death only to have their lungs fail?

On top of all that, if the boy continued his search, would he stay on the top floor or move on. Having not really searched the entire floor thoroughly, there was the slight chance that he missed one up here. Each second mattered in the lives of everyone involved, and Tobi seemed to be running out of time as the flames began searching for new sources of food , having already eaten through and weakening the walls and some spots on the floors. Time, if only he had more of it.

He didn't really have a choice in the matter. Not only would they be better off after being escorted outside immediately, he would be too. He wasn't terribly quick, but he could make it through the building faster on his own than with the girls.

Knowing time was of the essence, he hurried to the main floor, doing his best to mind the girls as he did. Upon reaching it, he stood in the doorway to the building and set the girls in his arms down before releasing the one clinging to his back. He took his sweater back from her and ushered them off to the firemen before he returned to the building.

The smoke was starting to get to him as well, having marked his face and clothes with black splotches, but he knew he could outlast these children, and so their well-being was put before his.

Knowing he hadn't the time to make a thorough sweep of the top floor now, he had to hope for the best and pray he hadn't missed one. He made his way to the second floor, hoping to find the other helpless souls still trapped within the building.

The girls rushed from the boy's arms into those of the firefighters. They were so happy to be out of the fire that they did not care who they ran to, and the firefighters were the first there.

When Tobi ran back in the firefighters went about yelling at him again, saying things like the building is unstable and he's done enough. Still, all of this was lost in the roar of the fire as the shinobi bounded back into the belly of the beast. Almost as though in reaction to the comparison, as soon as the shinobi went through, the entrance collapsed, trapping him and the other children inside. No time to worry about that apparently, the shinobi made his way up the flight of stairs, nearly tripping over a collapsed body, one of the two children that had been unaccounted for. A young boy had passed out on his way to escape. Decisions decisions..... now the shinobi had to find an alternate way out before the building came down around his ears.

The blockage of the building's entrance had certainly dampened his spirits, but he continued his search. When he came across the unconscious boy, he took a moment to check his pulse before scooping him up and putting him over his shoulder. Tobi was already near the second floor and didn't have much time no matter what he did. He was going to use what little he had left to make a quick search of the floor, hoping with all his might that the last child would be somewhere there.

Time was running out and things were looking desperate. With each step the shinobi took, something creaked below or moaned behind, or fell beside him. Neing about to walk through fire and not get burned is a nice ability to have, but it does not do much good it a building falls on your head, as it seemed that this one was trying to do to Tobi.

A quick search yeilded no results, and the unconscious boy started to cough from inhaling the smoke around him. Once again, his charge was in more immediate danger than he was, so the shinobi had to decide whether to keep searching or escape with his life. There was still one unchecked floor, but as the boy entered the hallway during his search, he found that the ceiling above the stairs had collapsed, blocking his way down. The fire had managed to block off everything except the stairs going up, almost as though inviting the boy to climb.

As quickly as he could move, Tobi rushed his way upstairs, but not before pulling the boy against his chest and wrapping his sweater around him to help block the heat and some of the smoke.

This was it. If he didn't find the last child here, Tobi's nightmares would soon have fuel. He kept the unconscious boy close to him as he moved throughout the floor, desperately searching for anyone else that had been left there. His heart was pounding in his ears, and he was coughing due to the smoke, but he wasn't ready to give in just yet.

"Just a little more..." came a voice in his head, urging him onward.

By now the third floor was nothing but flaming wood and melted metal. Thought the shinobi pushed on and searched, the boy on his back had kept coughing and choking. By the sounds of his breath, he was almost completely out of it. Once again, the search turned up no results and now smoke had enveloped the entire third floor. If the shinobi did not want to die, or have the boy on his back die, he had to get out now.

Fires licked at the shinobi, testing the limits of his immunity to them. They also nipped at the boy on his back, wherever he hung out of the sweater. The apartment was now a beast, aiming to digest the two who moved through it. The only way out was the stairs in to the roof, but the shinobi had to abandon hope of completing his mission fully to keep hope of survival/

It was a sacrifice, and he had no choice but to make it. With feelings of dread and loathing replacing his courage, Tobi hung his head shamefully as he gave up on his search. He quickly abandoned the building and forced his way to the roof, minding the coughing child as he did. He paused for but a second to see what he was dealing with to get down off of it.

The two buildings on either side were a few stories higher than the one Tobi found himself on. The one across the street from it was not, however, on fire and it was three stories as well. The distance across the main road was too much for a normal shinobi of Tobi's caliber to jump across by force of will alone. The shinobi needed to make a decision on how to get off of the building before it collapsed on itself.

Tobi knew he couldn't make it to the building across the street with a jump, with or without the child weighing him down. Nevertheless, he had the means to get across with a little help of his techniques.

He came to the edge of the building and forced himself not to look down. He shoved the boy up over his shoulder again and performed a set of handseals. Within seconds, a bright fire ignited beneath his feet, sending him into the air. He kept the boy steady with one hand while he used his other to shoot small bursts of flame to propel him toward the other building. Once he was above it, he canceled the jutsu and dropped to the roof, pulling the boy against him as he did. It wasn't a graceful landing, but he was out of harms way.

The Skyrocket jutsu is a simple-looking, yet complex and draining technique developed by Tobi. To begin, he will form the necessary handseals and focus chakra into his hands and feet. Once this is initiated, the chakra in his feet will erupt into flames and thrust him wherever he chooses to go (like a jet pack). The chakra in his hands can be ignited during this flight (which can reach a height of 30 feet in combat), acting as thrusters to help him turn and slow down. While performing this technique, Tobi moves quickly (+3 speed), but finds his taijutsu (-2) and control (-1) over other jutsu to be hampered over its five (5) post duration. However, it can be canceled at any time (even mid-flight), and the amount of chakra it drains depends on how long it has been active. Additionally, those standing too close behind or under him while he's beginning the jutsu or in the air are susceptible to being burned (third degree).

While the fire across the street burned brightly, Tobi and his unconscious ward were safe. Now to turn the boy over to proper custody.

Knowing he was out of danger didn't mean he could be slow. He still had the dying child with him, and if he didn't make it to the firemen quickly, he'd have something else to hang over his head.

Tobi moved through the building and made his way to the main floor before bursting out the door with the child in his arms. He was hacking and coughing by this point, but he'd made it and he quickly handed the boy off to one of the officials. He would have spoken, but he was hurting pretty badly on the inside due to smoke inhalation.

As Tobi burst from the building Firemen rushed to greet him, taking the child from his arms. By this point there had been a crowd gathered to watch the rescue attempt and so, as soon as the doors of the lding came open Tobi's ears were flooded with cheering and applause. While medics treated the child, Tobi heard calls of " That was AMAZING" and "You di it Kid!" from every on looker.

Upon inquiry, a firefighter explained that a teenage girl had come out moments after he had gone in the first time. reducing the number to four children unaccounted for. With this unconcious child, Tobi had managed to save everyone in the building. In response to this announcement, the crowd rushed the shinobi, picking him up on their shoulders and carrying him through the streets, declaring that this was their hero.
