“Shatter,” Hoten cursed softly as he stood in the overseer’s hub of this encampment. He paced a few times back and forth in the empty room and cursed his fate over and over again. “Shatter.”

He looked out the window to find a stretch of barren yet mostly flat land dotted by maybe a hundred or two hundred more citizens. Where is stood at the moment was one of the four small forts built at the corners of a rather large stone wall which served as the perimeter for their practice field. There’s as in Hoten’s, the other instructors and all of the genin and citizens who would have to serve today for combat alert drills. The mandatory military training was one that Hoten had participated in every year, as he was expected to like everyone else who lived in Iwa. He had never particularly enjoyed it, considering he would always be defaulted to the bottom brackets, but it was merely a few days that he could give away. As a ninja there was more expected out of him than a normal blacksmith or shepherd. Hoten tried to do his duty as proudly as possible.

Then he was told that this year he didn’t simply have his own drills to do, but would be instructing as well. It seemed annoying that he would be picked in his first year of being a special jonin. Especially considering he was the only one of his rank he knew who would have to be doing this. He just had the worst luck. To make him even more anxious, he hadn’t been stuck with the weakest citizens comprising of the lame, the sickly and members of the Shoshiki clan but instead one of the top brasses. He had never even seen a collection of Iwa’s brightest and strongest before. How could he be expected to lead a squadron of them?

“Shatter.” He cursed finally before grabbing his roaster and walking out and down the steps. Most of the other divisions had already been headed and their practice began. Hoten just had to find his. He had been put in charge of a group of mostly genin. 13 children. He could read off some names and noticed some clans in the mix, Sabeki, Ayatori, Enkouten. It was easy to distinguish these amongst a cloud of children. He figured that would be it.

Hoten came to the front of the group and found himself muttering, “Shatter,” under his breath. These were genin, how could he feel intimidated?

“Okay, you guys. You guys are squadron B12…?” He refilled through his papers. At some point his face was getting pink. “Uh… yea of course you are, you are assembled in sector 3.” He looked around for the sector marker just to make sure. He sighed. “Alright, I will be the instructor for today’s exercises. My name is Shoshiki Hoten. Please fall in line.”

Gekido huffed a bit as he observed the Special Jounin assigned to his squad, that being B12. "This guy must be a "special" jounin for a reason.." Gekido said under his breath, clearly impatient as always. Though he was always polite to people in person, he did have a fiery temper, and he was itching to get warm ups started. He had a grudge on a few other of the kids currently, and couldn't wait to wipe their smug little grins right off their faces. He snorted and scoffed at the idea, grinning as his blood boiled. Oh yeah, he was definitely ready for a fight.

He took position amongst the thirteen, oddly enough directly in the center. Gekido wasn't sure if the placement in line had anything to do with it, but he still hated to be in the direct spotlight. He looked around for his targets but didn't see any on the field today, as his squad wasn't what he was after. There had been a few other Genin that antagonized him, trying to get him to fight, but he was smarter then that. He knew he had to wait for proper training, as a Shinobi fight just because in the middle of Iwakagure was generally frowned upon..and he was pretty sure it was that way everywhere.

As they took positions he waited for the signal, his fiery red hair neatly combed and tucked into a samurai-esque ponytail, stance firm and ready for commands.

Hoten kept his eyes pinned to the roaster and his face was covered by the clipboard. His finger tapped against the back of the cardboard nervously. His cheeks and nose were growing pinker with discomfort. He needed to remember his mediation techniques. Hoten took a few moments to breath. Inhaling and exhaling was the only thing keeping him from cursing shatter uncontrollably. After a while he found the pause was only making him more nervous and was forced to continue with the demonstration. He lowered the board and put his hands at his side. He knew he was standing a bit too rigid but there was no way that he would loosen up now.

He was simply terrified. He knew that he was being entrusted with something important. Something as vital as these children and being an instructor was a very necessary job. If he failed today then these children would be the ones to suffer come an emergency. What’s more, he wasn’t dealing with the lowest class of weaklings anymore. The fact that every one of these kids showed more potential than he did was only making him more nervous. How was he supposed to command people who would have more talent than him already?

He sucked air through his teeth as he was simply running out of time. It was very much like Hoten to fear failing at being an instructor so much that he was failing at being an instructor. He glanced at the faces, reminding himself that these were the ones he needed to take care of. With that he lifted the board again and started to rattle off names. While there was the right amount of bodies present it was still procedure to make sure that these were in fact the kids he had on his roaster.

“Ayatori Kin… Ayator Nim…” Hoten began calling off the names. There were a few Ayatori children. An Akomi… Genoku…

As he called the names the children would answer with whatever expression required in such a situation. Hoten was already unwinding by the time he met the name; “Enkouten Gekido.” The Shoshiki’s eyes lingered on the Enkouten for a moment. The boy looked so similar to Akane that he felt the loss deep within his soul again. It was like reopening a fresh wound from just looking at him. Hoten quickly continued with his list.

“Hamura Ritsuko. Okay that is all of you. I would like us to start with some warm ups okay? Follow me to the rockwall.”

He led the way to the wall built out of jagged stones but a few yards away. If Hoten wasn’t so shaken he would have known to follow behind the group. He stood at the side of the wall and took note of the 30 foot climb. “Okay, no ninjutsu as this is only basic exercise. If I catch you infusing chakra I… uh… I guess I’ll have to give you some sort of punishment…” Hoten looked away meekly. “Erm. Who wants to go first?” He asked.

Gekido watched and observed the man, curious at all of his reactions. Clearly he had some form of PTSD or disorder, which slightly would annoy the outgoing Gekido, but he digressed. Whatever! He followed the man to do the exercises he was ordered, looking at the Rock Wall. He didn't bother to volunteer, waiting until the man known as Hoten finished what he was saying. He scoffed and darted forward, sprinting forward and headed toward the base of the wall. "The wall as a warmup? Tch. That's a first for our group." Gekido said as he immediately grasped at the nearest rock protrusion. He started to pull himself up, growling that he couldn't just use ninjutsu to make this easier.

He pressed onward and soon lost himself in thought, several of his teammates started to follow up. Gekido wasn't the type to want to lead, but due to his outgoing persona and temperaments, he always lead the charge wherever he went. He was reaching halfway, when he noticed a younger genin started to lose his grip and mistepped, starting to plummet. Shit! He fell off and planted his feet on the rockwall, activating the Chakra neccessary to hold his weight as he sprinted down and dove, barely catching the student in time before he grabbed a protrusion to keep them steady, lowering him into others. He groaned at what he did; he was sure he had to get punished.

"Ugh. Be more careful yeah? I'm probably going to have to eat a punishment for this." Gekido said, the Genin nodding with a cold sweat. Gekido quickly started to climb up the wall towards the top, quickly regaining the lead. Even if he was going to have to get in trouble, he wasn't going to not finish the task given to him. He may not be the most friendly of students, but he'd be damned if he didn't finish any task that he was given. As they reached the top, he sat ontop of the wall and stared down at their instructor.

He continued his observations and noted that the man definitely had no confidence. Maybe Gekido could do what he did to so many others; ignite a fire inside them. Despite his tempers, assholery, and appearance, Gekido had a talent for bringing people's fighting spirit out of them. He always managed to help push others, rather it be a teammate or opponent, into giving it their all. It wasn't always intentional either. "Hoten-sama. I know I had to use chakra, but it was for a good cause. Am I still screwed, or do I get a friggin' pass?" Gekido called down, curious to get his result. Always in a hurry!

“Oh good, Gekido…”

Hoten spoke while checking his roaster for the name of this Enkouten boy. He read out some of his basic stats and physical reports, to get acquainted. He seemed to have no problems in the academy or in his previous tests as far as physical skills went. He was even above average. Hoten was actually quite jealous, yes of his outstanding abilities but of his genetics as an Enkouten. It was hard not to feel bad about himself when he only recently was able to sprint for more than a minute without keeling over. Hoten continued to admire the records of both Gekido and the other children, but he was suddenly startled away from the board when everyone else started climbing the wall.

He started flailing his arms in a panic – not a move to show his control and leadership skills.

“Guys! Guys! Hey stop! One at a time!” He tried to shout after them but as expected not one of the children listened. What was most frustrating was that the Shoshiki could garner the attention of the audience while on stage, but couldn’t manage to get a small group of children to listen to him. The flaw had to lie in the character. “Guys! That is dangerous! You could hurt yourselves!” He continued to plea, hoping he could at least awaken their rational side. He was foolish.

He tried to continually shout but it was all on deaf ears. It wasn’t until one of the children lost their grip that Hoten was even slightly heard. “Shatter!” He cursed as the child fell.

His instincts as a shinobi kicked in, he had already started infusing his chakra when he noticed one of the other boys let go too. The Shoshiki stopped short as the children landed in front of him. His mouth agape and his eyes widened. It wasn’t an easy feat that the genin accomplished. His reflexes and judgment was enough to astound Hoten. He scrutinized the hero of that moment. He remembered his red hair and molten colored eyes. The Enkouten. He breathed to dull the nerves, finding it impossible to maintain an act of the strict drill instructor.

“Shatter.” He turned to the kids on the wall. “Alright guys you’ve already made it half way. Get to the top and climb down. Take care while doing it. I don’t want to see another mishap. Hurry, hurry, hurry!” He commanded and the children seemed to be willing to obey that. Perhaps they were shaken by the prospect of an injury amongst their ranks. He had heard of the power of a single demonstration on group morale. Speaking of single demonstration.

He looked up at the Enkouten boy asking about his punishment. It was a clear instruction. As far as his actions, it was unnecessary. Hoten knew he had more than enough time to intervene before anything disastrous could happen. Still that didn’t mean that he acted completely in vain. It was impulsive but the right thing to do. Even Hoten understood some things transcended orders.

“Climb down, Gekido-kun.” He spoke without addressing the topic of punishment. “Everyone. You have two laps to run round the perimeter! That’s two hundred and thirty meters. Get going!” He ordered. The group would find another class of cadets already running.

Gekido was puzzled as the man chose not to punishment. That was...interesting to him. He raised an eye and shrugged, quickly climbing to the top. He leapt and climbed from rock to rock, almost a natural at the physical task, before finally reaching the summit. He took a small break, watching the other students until they all began to climb down per Hoten. As Hoten gave more instructions, he nodded and quickly climbed back down, carefully adjusting to make sure he didn't accidentally cross into one of the other students.

As his feet hit the ground, he stretched and readied his legs before taking position and sprinting forward, beginning his lap. He kept his breathing strong as he outmaneuvered and sped past a few other Genin that had gotten a lead. It wasn't long before he took front of the pack, the fire in his eyes gleaming as he kept the rush forward. Gekido then returned his thoughts to his current teacher. Why was he constantly saying shatter? And Gekido-kun? This man was an oddity, though to Gekido, everyone had a little weird in them. He scoffed at himself and dismissed his thoughts before continuing forward, soon reaching the end of his first lap.

He checked his teammates to make sure there was no other troubles before continuing onward, encouraging the others in Gekido fashion. "Come on you slackers! This is easy for us!" Gekido barked, his fellow Genin rolling their eyes but picking up their pace. It was an interesting dynamic that Gekido had with his classmates, as despite the fact Gekido was generally an ass and quite conceited, he hid the fact that he actually gave a damn about his comrades. His temper was always his biggest issue, but there was always room to grow as a person, and the compassion he held for his village rivaled the very temper that often kept him alienated from having any actual friends. While Gekido wasn't a loner, he was definitely not popular, even taking into account he was an above average in just about everything a Shinobi needed. He wasn't quite a prodigy, but even he knew it was noted that he held quite the potential.

Migrating to the end of the second lap, Gekido caught his breath and observed his current teacher again. Something was bugging Gekido about the man, but he would wait until after the drills before he attempted to get anymore information out of him.

Hoten stayed at the back of his group as they ran along the track at the flanks of another group. Due to all the years of training Hoten didn’t have a problem with keeping up to his group. Thankfully. He couldn’t even imagine how embarrassing it would be if she was being outmatched by genin and children. He kept his eyes on the faces of his charges. He made sure to spot anyone who was too strained or didn’t look able enough for his drills. Firstly he was supposed to keep track of them for the sake of a performance review. Secondly he didn’t want to push anyone beyond their limits. He understood limitations more than anyone else might. It was also just not his job to overwork any of these kids.

His silver eyes caught the red hair of Gekido who was already in the front. The kid was doing exceptionally at the moment. He tried to keep the spirits of the others up. It reminded the Shoshiki of himself in the academy. When the tasks assigned seemed almost too great for not just him but the entire class, he would be the one to shout out to the heavens that he could do it. It was all a part of his unbreakable willpower. The core of his way as a ninja. Hoten’s eyes quickly were pulled away when he caught sight of the other group’s instructor. A burly man. The posterchild of a strict Iwa upbringing. Large, rough-looking, weathered by struggle. He wore his scars and hardened skin like badges. Badges that made him better than a thin pale guy that didn’t have a single scar on him.

Hoten locked eyes with the man for a split second as the other instructor smirked at him.

AYE! I DON’T WANT TO SEE A SINGLE ONE BEHIND THIS GROUP! KICK IT UP!” The large instructor barked at his group of children. His group and Hoten’s seemed equal in size and age. Even the diversity in clan was about the same. Somehow it was obvious that he thought something about the bunch in his charge was better than the Shoshiki’s. Hoten looked away, uninterested in challenging this man’s bravado. Of course, Hoten didn’t have a lot of challenge with. The burly man slowed enough for Hoten to be in ear shot.

Hey, blondie! Why don’t you take a break? You don’t look like you can handle this work! You’re holding those kids back.” He sneered before running back up again.

Gekido was still running ahead, a considerable distance between himself and the others, but had listened to the other instructor belittle hoten. He noticed his own instructor, Hoten, was just letting the man walk all over him without so much as trying to fight back or retaliate. Gekido darted to the far side of the track to be within ear shot of the instructors and his fellow Genin. "Hey you big burly dipshit, Instead of barking orders and trying to bully another Shinobi, why don't you get that fatass out here on the track and run with us! I bet I could do a hundred laps before you could even get your stupid mouth to shut up! Are those scars from battle, or because you annoyed the shit out of another instructor with some courage and he put your punkass into place!" Gekido yelled out, an outstanding rude gesture following, a grin from Gekido close behind. Was it ever mentioned he didn't always get along with authority? Or that Gekido definitely did NOT like bullies. As much of an asshat as he was, he had no patience for anyone trying to belittle others. His teammates all laughed hysterically at the other instructor, some reluctantly, renewing their vigor and motivation as they ran harder to outpace the other squad.

As far as Gekido was concerned, he could outpace the enemy team on his own , the sheer power he had was enough for him, but he knew it wasn't just about him. He couldn't wait for combat sparring, especially if it was between squads. The idea of Gekido being able to kick the hell out of the other squad greatly appealed to him, all to piss off the other instructor further. Gekido quickly retained his position ahead of the group, wondering if the instructor would do anything to him, and if his own would finally grow a spine and start acting like the boss. Oddly enough, it appeared to Gekido that Hoten would be the one who needed some fire and motivation; and Gekido had plenty of that lying around.

Hoten’s cheeks quickly became as bright and pink as woman’s underwear. He was easily embarrassed and the sheer vulgarity of the words coming from the mouth of one of his students became too much to allow. His eyes flickered to Gekido some yards away. His skin was hot and his anxiety flared.

“Gekido! Stop immediately! That’s an order.”

The command he issued was for the genin to stop the running exercise and pull himself to the side. Hoten came out of the line, and so did the large second instructor. He walked up to the young Enkouten. His expression wasn’t angry or even slightly aggressive. Instead Hoten’s eyes showed exasperation. Overall he was slightly overwhelmed but he had agreed to this day and was willing to take responsibility. He stopped in front of Gekido and sighed anxiously.

“Gekido, you were speaking to a superior disrespectfully. You’re behavior does not shame him but yourself and your teacher as well as you comrades. I would like you to apologize, please.” The Shoshiki displayed his polite upbringing and stringent personality when it came to good etiquette. In his own pacifistic way Hoten was drawing the line. This behavior was truly improper for the boy to allow to slide. Hoten folded his arms as to show that there was no getting out of it, lest stronger reprimand would ensue. “I’m waiting.”

Once Gekido offered the other shinobi instructor an apology he would scoff. “Ooh this pipsqueak instructor is laying down the law to his pipsqueak charge. This is all just too adorable. If you really want to teach this little bastard a lesson, then string him up on the poles. Otherwise you tiny lot are a waste of my time. When you realize this is too much for you, why don’t you send him my way so I can teach him real respect?” With that the man was on his way back to his group.

Hoten allowed the instructor to talk without interrupting and with no interest in facing off against him. The special jounin couldn’t be pushed to violence and simple speech wouldn’t get through such a thick headed man. He turned to the Enkouten. “Listen, I appreciate what you were trying to do. The attempt is a noble one. However I don’t want you to allow anger to give you cause to act. Please respect those around you, and look after your comrades first. I will handle myself.” He offered a smile and allowed him to get back into line.

Once the laps were done their next drill was hand to hand combat.

Gekido scoffed and shrugged it off. As if any of the instructors would have his respect. None the less, simply because he didn't want to deal with more trouble, he stopped in his place and raised an eye. This should be good. He kept his arms crossed and merely gazed at the two instructors; entirely fearless of them both. If someone wasn't going to stand up for another, Gekido certainly would.

A fire ignited in his eyes; this was going to be glorious. After being told to apologize, Gekido smirked. "Oh, right, absolutely Hoten-sama. I was completely out of line. I do apologize...for what I'm about to do." Gekido stated, taking a casual step with each phrase. As fast as he possibly could, Gekido launched his foot straight into the bigger instructors groin. "How's that for authority?! Punish me all you want, but don't you dare insult MY teacher with your own pathetic need for superiority! Bet you feel manly talking like that to kids!" Gekido said with a happy grin, watching the man fall to his knees in a surprise.

He took a legendary bow again to Hoten. "Sorry Hoten-sama, I was looking out for my comrades. Whatever punishment you think is fair, I'll take, but until then...." Gekido grinned, turning proudly and walking from the instructors. His classmates were all totally stunned, and soon would start laughing hysterically. If Gekido didn't have respect before, he certainly did now amongst the other Genin.

Gekido had a temper problem, that much was sure, but what he hated more then anything was a bully. He was sure the instructor would retaliate and punish him, but he was prepared for it and felt confident. Gekido wasn't one to be afraid of punishment; or anything for that matter. As he returned to his original position, he stared at the duo, curious to what would happen now. Would Hoten punish him? Laugh? Or would Gekido be stuck having to fight off a superior. While it was no question he should probably be punished, how do you punish one that knew the consequences, yet still had no fear?

“Shatter,” Hoten sighed with exasperation.

The instructor, who was walking away before had turned around in interest in hearing the genin’s apology. A mistake. The attack was an unexpected one. So unexpected that a trained shinobi of Hoten’s level didn’t even have the smallest amount of defense. This was a critical attack and an insult to the large man’s honor. For a genin to do this and in the sight of hundreds of others and every officer of rank in this facility was a major offensive. At this point simply being strung up on a pole was too small of a punishement. Hoten didn’t even know how to react in this situation.

As the other instructor sweated off the damage and got up from his knees the crowd’s amusement and jeering quickly turned to stark silence. The atmosphere was so tense with apprehension and fear that not even the other instructors even tried to approach. Hoten was unfamiliar with this man, but if he was such a boorish person before he didn’t want to know what he would do next.

The Instructor’s face was bright red from anger. His coarse black beard was standing on ends. His exposed muscles rippled with aggression. Gekido had made a fatal mistake in the eyes of everyone present.

Squadron B13! Assemble at the grappling pit. We are having a joint sparing match with B12. This kid is the first round!” The instructor spoke as if he was commanding this entire facility. It didn’t take long for the other instructors to begin organizing their groups to the audience area of the grappling pit. Hoten couldn’t even look at the man who was fuming. His hands had been tied. Gekido was acting on an honor basis, a very rash honor basis, and had done this to himself. There was no way that Hoten could calm this belligerent officer who had his pride stepped on. In Iwa honor was everything.

It only took a few seconds for Hoten’s group to assemble at the pit. The grappling pit was a small stadium in the middle of the facility. It was a real pit. A circular depression into the ground, about fifteen meters below. It was perhaps an old sink hole. It was reinforced with concrete and above the small pit was railing for spectators to stand and watch. It was quite the barbaric climate but a staple in the village. Gekido was expected to jump into the pit against his opponents. The opposing instructor sent three of his charges into the pit to fight.

“That isn’t fair! You expect him to fight three against one?!” Hoten debated. A jeering came from the crowd. Obviously the others who had assembled thought this was an efficient punishment. Either that or they really wanted to see the chaos unfold. “Shatter.”
