The morning arrived in Iwagakure sooner than expected. Maru's eyes opened to a welcoming ceiling, a pleasant scent, and a familiar warmth. His office quarters were certainly not lacking, but they could never compare to where he was right now: here, at home, in their bed. As Maru's senses came to him, he looked over and down, Sayuri's prone form curled against him and gently holding him, the unfiltered warmth of her flesh against his beneath the covers and her ember hair loosely draped over her shoulder. There was nothing more he wished to see when he first opened his eyes. Maru's new position as Honmaru Division Commander had taken much of his time and presented new challenges, but they had learned to manage. Maru was more proactive with helping around the house while he was around so that Sayuri didn't feel needlessly burdened. They'd made significant progress on a few of the renovation projects on the bottom floor, and Eman's presence had been of immense help. Eman and Sayuri had also been teaching each other their languages, the two women bonding very quickly. It was in the quiet moments like these, away from the stress and constant movement of his work that Maru would realize that despite everything that had happened... life wasn't bad. He had more than he could have ever asked for, and he would never stop showing how deeply he appreciated those things and those people.

Slowly shifting so as not to rouse his beloved, he lovingly gazed at Sayuri's sleeping face. Though they still hadn't had a serious moment of physical intimacy perhaps since that first day they met, Maru had found himself becoming much more comfortable around her, now only in his boxer-briefs when they went to bed. In her own way, Sayuri had helped him reach that point, not by word but by example. Even though they had started living together pretty quickly, there had been things he’d still kept to himself. Yet from the small to the significant, Sayuri had held nothing back and had coaxed him out of his shell in more ways than one. Thus, instead of merely planting a kiss on her brow, Maru leaned over and, in an unusually forward display of affection, softly kissed and nibbled along her neckline, his hand lightly sliding along the small of her back. He hoped her response was about as surprised as he was expecting…

As Iwamaru shifted carefully from Sayuri to keep from waking her, the woman still whimpered quietly in her sleep. Nuzzling into her pillow briefly at the change from him moving around. But as she felt the brush of his lips and teeth across her neck her eyes slowly began to flutter, and a whimper returning as she felt his hand on her back. "Maru...?" Her yellow-orange eyes fluttered open as she groaned and inched closer to him. She felt groggy in the moment but it didn't take her long to realize she wasn't dreaming like she originally thought. Chuckling under her breath she looked at him for a moment in light surprise. "...and what kind of good morning are you after, my love?" she asked quietly, moving a hand under his chin to try and coax him into a a light kiss.

Lately things had been so busy between her training, her missions, and the work fixing up the home it felt like Sayuri hadn't had much time to herself or time for her and Maru. Though the time she had spent with Eman had helped keep her sane, she still missed having more time alone with Maru. Waking up like this suddenly put her in a mood. It didn't take long for her to try and nuzzle up against him again, even wrapping a leg around one of his and try to intertwine herself with him as she looked at him. "Heh... careful what you start..." she grumbled sleepily.

The brightness in Maru's eyes was a new sight to Sayuri, at least since that fateful day with Eman. The last chains from his past that had burdened him had been broken that afternoon. The transformation had been so profound that he was arguably a different person, and a better one at that. None of this would have been possible without Sayuri. There was little thought for him outside of the moment, simply enjoying the feel of her skin against his lips and teeth. It seemed that she was almost as light of a sleeper as he was, quickly rousing after the first few nibbles. His mouth would continue its work, at least until he felt her hand under his chin. Her feather touch guided his mouth up her neck toward her chin, Maru planting light kisses along the trail until her lips found his. Once they found each other, Maru's kiss briefly deepened, a delicate and intimate embrace of lips and tongue. Then, slowly pulling his lips away, Maru's eyes fluttered open to look at Sayuri. All the while, his hand on her back would slowly slide down along her side to gently grip her thigh even as her leg loosely hooked around his. This position was... dangerous. She lay below him, hidden under the covers but otherwise bare, exposed to him. The only thing that had stopped him when they'd first met was the timely warning from the memory of his father. Now that they actually knew each other, now that they loved each other...

What would stop them now?

His cheeks flushed, but he didn't lose that smirk. Rather, it widened into a grin, and Maru's head craned down as he dragged the tip of his tongue gently along the opposite side of her neck. "Is that a warning... or a challenge, my sweet?" he whispered huskily into her ear, taking her earlobe between his teeth and gently tugging before letting it softly slide from between his lips. Maru's other arm then slipped around her waist to pull her into another slow but deep kiss, rolling over and smoothly shifting Sayuri until she rest atop him beneath the covers. His pulse softly rang through his chest as it beat against hers, and in the quiet of this passionate moment, he could almost swear their hearts were nearly in sync. The freedom that came from the lack of expectations in this moment was intoxicating in a way. Wherever Sayuri wanted to take this right now... barring divine intervention, that's where it would go.

Even as he ducked his head down to put his tongue to her neck, Sayuri leaned her head back to give him better access to her bare skin. She felt a shiver run down her spine at both his words and his breath against her ear. As they kissed again, even her tongue dancing with his as he pulled her on top of him, she couldn't help a slight giggle. "Maybe its both... and a hope..." she replied breathlessly as she took a moment to look down at him. She'd wanted to be with him since that first day, and more than once since wished he'd take her already. Yet still she waited, knowing he hadn't felt ready, that so much had stood in the way. Yet since everything had settled with Eman she had felt like every last wall had finally fallen away, and the way he had woken her left her wondering if he finally was ready for more.

She leaned down and kissed him deeply, enjoying both the taste and scent of the man in the moment as one hand moved behind his head and another behind his shoulder. "Tell me, my love...." she breathed between kisses. "...what do you want this morning?"

Maru could not fathom a better way to start his morning. Sayuri accepted his caressing touches with an eager surrender. His hands drifted up and down Sayuri's back, that same feeling of warmth nearly rising off of her skin. It was so much quieter than the first day they had met, and yet there was none of the uncertainty or fear that he'd experienced back then. The way she lay upon him, the whispers that drifted from their lips, the glow of her eyes... what was once forbidden now felt so natural. And when her whispered question floated to tickle his ears, Maru's response rolled off of his tongue with a chuckle. Craning his neck up, he planted a delicate peck on the left side of her neck. "This."

The tip of his nose drew a line up her neck and throat, taking in her scent while his teeth lightly nipped at the point of her chin. "Us."

Maru's lips met Sayuri's once again in a slow, deep kiss. "...You," he breathed between kisses, the world around them slowly fading away until they were all that remained.

Maru's hands slid along her back and came to rest on her hips, tantalizingly close to her backside. He was anxious, but now for very different reasons. When they'd first met, he wasn't sure if they would have ever stopped. Now, he was wondering how they would start. His mind sorted through a few possibilities, but he sensed that nothing would compare to the creativity of the woman whose warmth was interwoven with his own.

Maru's kiss was returned even as Sayuri's breath quickened and her heart began to race. Both of her hands moved to his sides briefly as she found herself tempted to rid themselves of the one garment he wore that kept such a thin barrier between them. Yet instead she forced her hands to move gently and slowly up his abs and chest, fingertips tracing every detail of him to his shoulders before slipping behind his neck and up the back of his head until she found enough hair to grip. She kissed him deeply. One leg she brought behind one of his, the other parallel with his before trying to shift positions as he had before so that she might be under him once again.

If it went as she hoped, even if it meant he might have to follow her lead as he was a good deal stronger than her, she would be smirking up at her when she finally broke the kiss. Trying to catch her breath it would be her kissing down his jawline and to his neck this time, her hands moving down to his sides again. "...then take me already, Maru."

Those streams of lava from Sayuri's fingertips flowed along Maru's flesh like wildfires, and Maru savored the sensation. He exhaled shakily as those tiny points of pressure sent gentle waves through his nerves, her softness a contrast to the steel of his flesh. Eventually, her hands traced every contour of his chest, muscle relaxing under the heat of Sayuri's touch. Her fiery hands slid up and gripped his hair, her lips firmly planting themselves on his own, and he returned the kiss eagerly. It took a moment for Maru to register Sayuri's leg wrapping behind his and her heel pushing against the back of his knee. But once he understood, he obliged, slowly rolling over until now rest over her, her bare flesh softly pressed against his under the darkness of the bed's covers and sheets.

The feeling of Sayuri's lips trailing down his neck elicited a ragged sigh, almost a groan of pleasure due to the pure sexual tension skyrocketing between them. Goosebumps quickly formed along every place on his skin her hands traveled, and his quickly-deteriorating reflex of self-control was hanging on by the most frayed of threads. He wasn't sure why he needed to hear it, but unless she told him directly, he couldn't let himself cross that final line. But he wouldn't be waiting long. Sayuri had been waiting for this moment long before he had, and they both knew it. That assertion, very nearly a command, finally ripped through the silence, and his eyes flashed with an intensity that neither of the two had ever seen before. Maru hungrily took Sayuri's lips in his own, stealing the breath from her lungs as their tongues danced together. He leaned forward, his body spreading Sayuri's legs further apart. Maru supported himself over her with one arm, but the other slid up her side under the covers, reaching for-

"Maru-san! Sayuri-san! Breakfast!"

Maru's hand stopped short of the promised land his fingers had been searching for, their lips slowly dragging away from each other. Ah, right. Eman was here. That... might make for some embarrassing questions and awkward conversations if they unleashed their pent-up desires while she was around. Maru wasn't sure why, but he couldn't help but chuckle under his breath, dropping his head as he painfully willed himself to stop. "...We... We are definitely coming back to this," he breathed, his mirth still coloring the undertone of his voice.

Sayuri returned his kiss eagerly as her fingertips pressed into his skin of his back. Yet a moment later and she heard Eman's yell come from downstairs. As he stopped and dropped his head, Sayuri grunted quietly in frustration and dropped her head back on the pillow and looked up at the ceiling. "...oh we better." she replied, still a little out of breath before chuckling lightly as well. She lifted her head slightly before looking at Maru with a slight smirk on her face. "Guess we'll have to wait just a little longer." she added, sighing quietly as she sat up enough to kiss him on the forehead before she slid out from under him and out of the bed to find something to wear. She pulled on a simple pair of underwear and loose sweatpants as well as a loose t-shirt. She clearly didn't feel like wearing anything too fitting today.

She pulled her hair back into a simple ponytail for the moment before giving Maru another smile. "Come on, if we don't get downstairs Eman is going to think something is wrong..." she teased him before heading down to see what the other woman had prepared to start their day. Trying to distract herself from coitus interruptus, she thought over what was needed to still welcome the woman into the home. Her room had been fully furnished by now, and they'd even set her up with several outfits of her choice that she seemed to like. Thinking it over she wondered if maybe Eman would be partial to any jewelry or something else. '...maybe a pet? Maru and I are gone a lot, she might need some company?'

This had been the first time that Maru had been denied his desire for Sayuri by something other than his own inhibitions, and it was a strong desire at that. He had to tamp down the frustration he felt himself, more potent than he had anticipated while Sayuri planted a kiss upon his brow. He tossed the covers off of himself and rolled to the edge of the bed. He set his feet firmly on the cool wooden floor and took a moment to center himself. It was just a small setback, nothing more. He and Sayuri would have their moment soon enough. For now, he just had to endure the wait. Rising out of bed, his normal clothing was already pretty relaxed, fairly relaxed cargo pants and a thin thermal t-shirt.

Maru nodded at Sayuri's suggestion. Eman had worked very hard ever since they arrived, and Maru was already concerned that by proxy they had relegated her to the role of a servant for everything she did to make their lives easier. They didn't need to make her confused or flustered by their bedroom activities on top of that. Making his way down the stairs shortly after Sayuri. The smells drifted up to his nose even before he finished coming down the stairs. He peered toward the kitchen to see Eman looking back at the pair with her timid smile, a gesture he returned in kind. "My friend, thank you. It smells wonderful," Maru offered

Eman shook her head. Maru had offered to speak their tribe's tongue in the home, but Eman had surprised them both by requesting that they only speak the common tongue unless it was something important or if it was during Sayuri's lessons. She seemed very determined to learn now that she knew that her teachers saw her as something more than a pet. Before them lay several dishes: crisp golden potatoes and cauliflower, a stew made of chickpeas, lamb and pork meatballs with onions and spices, a spicy lamb curry in a tangy vinegar sauce, and a fluffy style of flatbread. "It is least I could do. Please, sit! We have dishes of my people. Very good. Good food." Even though her accent was thick, and she wasn't quite at truly complete sentences, she could communicate pretty clearly. She pointed to the dishes and gave a name to each of them. "Aloo gobi, chana masala, kofta, lamb vindaloo, naan."

For Maru, these moments weren't merely a means to experience new cuisine; they were an unexpected window into the life his mother might have lived before she'd been brought to the village. He dug into the meal with gusto, putting a bit of everything on his plate and eagerly taking a bite of each dish. He'd never experienced food like this, and his mouth exploded with the flavor. His joy and shock was evident on his face as he could only utter a single word: "Wow."

Eman was thoroughly pleased. She looked eagerly to Sayuri, hoping she would feel similarly.

Sayuri was surprised by the array of smells that assailed her senses as she came down the stairs. She wasn't used to such things. Morning meals were normally fairly bland but this smelled quite incredible and almost overwhelming, yet she was grinning from ear to ear as she came to the table and looked over it all. "This all looks incredible, Eman." she said as she saw it all, her eyes looking at the naan in particular. The woman was a bit of an oddity, instead of a sweet tooth what the woman really liked was a variety of breads. They were probably among her favorite things to nibble on. In fact when she made herself a plate there was already a piece hanging from her mouth before she even sat down. She didn't even think to blush at her own eagerness.

When she looked up and saw Eman standing up she quickly motioned her over. "Join us, no staring and serving in this house." she teased, knowing that was a habit the woman probably still was having trouble breaking. It would have been drilled into her from the moment she was taken into slavery that she had to stand apart from the people she worked for. But Sayuri truly wanted her to know that here, she was family. Once Eman was sitting with her own plate, and only then, would Sayuri start digging into the rest of the food. "Gods... this is incredible..." Her taste buds were overwhelmed by the spice, but the woman welcomed the change whole heartedly. The tingling and burning across her tongue and lips were a new sensation. She had had spice before of course, but this was of a different kind than what she'd had before.

Sayuri's infallible instincts yet again zeroed in on a small habit of Eman's. Her eyes brightened even more, and after a moment of indecision, she discreetly slipped into her own chair and started to serve herself. Maru noticed his beloved's keen senses in action and immediately made mental note. He acknowledged that he hadn't perceived that as a behavior someone who had been a slave might exhibit, realizing that his mother had done the same thing and simply thought it natural. He looked to his darling and reached for her hand, giving it an affirming squeeze almost as if to say "thank you". Garlic, cardamom, cumin, cayenne pepper, garam masala, turmeric: the acumen of Eman's culinary skills were on full display, and it was clear that both of her new family members were head over heels for the food. Something clicked in Maru's head as they sat enjoying this food: Eriko. She owned a restaurant. She needed to meet Eman. Maru intended to teach her to use chakra and be able to defend herself, but whether Eman decided to become a shinobi would be her decision. But her skills as a cook could be incredibly useful. Making a business wouldn't be easy, but if it was what she wanted, she'd be able to make a life for herself.

Maru's curiosity was piqued through these dishes. "Eman, who taught you these dishes? These are different from the food we normally see here in the village," he asked between bites.

"My family taught me... simple things. I learn to make myself," she answered, pausing for a few moments between phrases, trying to think of the word in common before replying. "Still learning. Your mother... she make many good foods, yes?"

Maru paused as his thoughts turned to his mother. There was a tinge of sadness, but it was nothing like it used to look. It didn't crush him like before. He shook his head. "No, my friend. She chose not to. She didn't want me to know about her past... even though I wanted to." Eman blinked in surprise, and there was a tinge of remorse in her gaze, worried she might have hurt her new friend. But Maru was quick to reassure her, placing a hand on her shoulder and giving a light squeeze along with a grateful smile. "You're teaching me more about my mother and our people... Thank you, Eman."

Eman was both relieved and moved. She returned the gesture in kind, gripping his forearm slightly and giving a squeeze as she wiped a single tear from the corner of her eye before she returned her attention to her food, eating with just a little more enthusiasm than before.

As Maru squeezed her hand, Sayuri simply smiled at him in return. She'd grown observant of people's behavior over the years and though she wasn't accustomed to having slaves around her she had noticed their behaviors in public or the homes of others. The way they'd serve and stand around had always made her feel nervous and awkward, seeing Eman do it had almost made her feel worse. She was honestly glad to see the woman break the habit so quickly and just join them. Watching her let go of the physical chains had been a relief, but watching her break such mental and emotional chains that took the form of ingrained habits was a different kind of liberative feeling for Sayuri. It was one she got to live through Eman.

She watched the exchange between the two with her own twinge of sadness, unsure how to process what she was seeing. In some ways she couldn't fathom not knowing one's parent when having them so close for so long. But at the same time, she could understand it exactly. For Maru, he was learning and regaining parts of himself and his mother he had lost by not knowing of her heritage. But for her, the lost part of herself was still out there.

For a few moments she pushed the food around on her plate in deep thought before she continued eating. 'Do I even want any part of him back? I just keep hoping to hear he's dead... but there isn't even a sign of him for a long time now...'

From the corner of his eye, Maru caught Sayuri's staring down at her plate. He turned his eyes to her as Eman began to eat, thinking perhaps she was simply examining one of the morsels on her plate, but he caught a split second of something else, a sliver of sorrow amidst this otherwise joyous occasion. He couldn't be certain what exactly had made Sayuri feel this way, he admitted. Was it something involving her own parents? It was one of the few things that she could reflect on that Maru knew could bring consternation and grief to her otherwise joyous countenance. Still, it was only a hunch, and he wouldn't press her for questions now. To do so in front of Eman, regardless of how close they were, would be insensitive and inconsiderate. He'd ask her about it later, when they were alone or when Eman was asleep. He'd support her in a different way instead, taking Sayuri's free hand in his own and gently running the pad of his thumb back and forth over her knuckles. If nothing else, he wanted her to know he was always there to support her as faithfully as she had done for him, even in these little moments.

Maru eventually finished what was on his plate, still marveling at the spices, heat, and tang that tickled his lips and the inside of his mouth. Leaning back, he sighed, more than content with the meal. "Eman, my friend, that was... incredible. The next time you cook, please let us join you. I would love to learn how to make dishes like these," he requested, starting to gather some of the empty dishes so he could begin washing them.

Eman nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, Maru-san! I wish to show you and Sayuri-san many things about our people," she agreed, her emphatic agreement resonating even in her gaze. She followed Maru's lead in gathering dishes, a chore that would have been forced upon her in other households that she now eagerly tackled.

As they were washing the dishes, Maru called back to his beloved. He had an idea to try and help improve Sayuri's mood... not to mention that he wanted to surprise her with something a bit sentimental. Earlier in their relationship, Sayuri had sung for him, even going so far as to help him heal the resentment he'd felt toward music as a whole. He wanted to repay that kindness. "My love, I have a small errand to run in the market. Did you want to join me?" he asked.

He turned to Eman immediately after. "You are free to join us as well, Eman," he offered.

Eman paused for a moment, seemingly weighing her options. Here, in the home, she was comfortable and certain about how she'd be treated. Out there, however, was another matter. She didn't immediately give her answer.

Sayuri finished the food on her plate and truly enjoyed it. The flavors were an entirely new experience for her, she just wished she could properly convey how it made her feel. She was glad that Maru was keeping Eman's attention and complimenting the woman enough for the both of them though. Her mood had suddenly plummeted and she didn't want to drag their moods down with hers. She did her best to smile in return any time a look was thrown her way, and helped gather up dishes when all was said and done. Though as Maru and Eman went to wash the dishes, Sayuri stepped into the living room to try and gather herself. Her hands on her hips she started to pace, memories of the deaths of her parents running through her mind. It had been some time since her old obsession had resurfaced and she found herself suddenly preoccupied. 'They never found his body... is he even dead?'

Her thoughts were broken by Maru as he called to her and she turned suddenly, taking a moment to realize he had asked her a question. She nodded quickly at first. "Of course." she answered simply, smiling as she walked back to him and rest a hand on his waist before taking a moment to kiss him on the lips briefly. "I could use some time out of the house right now anyway." she added, sighing lightly before looking at Eman and noticing her discomfort. She reached over and touched the woman gently on the shoulder. If she didn't pull away she'd trail her hand down the woman's arm to gently pull her to her and kiss her on the forehead. "It's okay if you're not comfortable coming with, but I promise you'll be safe with us."

Yeah, something was wrong. Maru couldn’t put his finger on it, but Sayuri had something that was weighing on her mind. He wouldn’t press her about it, not in front of Eman, but he didn’t want Sayuri to think that she had to handle her problems on her own. She had helped him shoulder so much, and now it finally was his turn. Hopefully, this little “errand” of his would be a way he could reassure her of his support. He gently returned the soft kiss she gave him, hand slipping around her waist as naturally as putting on a coat. He also observed the exchange between Sayuri and Eman with keen interest.

Eman followed the gentle pull and her eyes widened at the sensation of Sayuri’s kiss on her brow. For the ex-slave, it evoked the mental image of her sister, who had died in one of the raiding parties. The smile returned to her face with renewed vigor. ”…I will go,” she agreed quietly setting the final dish on the rack to dry.

Maru knew that the ladies would need some time to get themselves ready. ”If the two of you want to use the room upstairs to get changed, I can wait down here. I’m ready whenever,” he offered to Sayuri. Eman looked on in confusion, but Maru was clearly offering for Sayuri to have a little fun with Eman in picking out an outfit. Hopefully, it would help distract her mind from whatever was plaguing her thoughts.
