New Life to the Forest

Natsumi's main mission during the invasion of Wind Country was to pluck kekkai genkai from enemy shinobi when possible. Yozei had a transplant from the Enkouten already and with it being there, he had been placed with them to strengthen the brainwashing and fit him into the village as seamlessly as they could. Zakuro had nothing for them, disappointingly. The true prize was the Senju she had been able to scalp before the fighting really began. Natsumi had been able to remove one of his kidneys and preserve it for someone special.

The host of the Life Genma.

The synergy between its powers and the Mokuton element held within the organ was something Tatsuo and the council were eager to see. There was a chance with them combined, entire swathes of lands, countries even, could be terraformed into sustainable living conditions. Already Kotori had been informed and told to come to Iwagakure General Hospital and by the time Natsumi entered the building, the blonde was given word that the host was already prepped and ready with additional Tenkujutsu countermeasures ready to go in case the beast tried to use now as a way to push for freedom. Between herself and the others, Natsumi wasn't worried even if it did try.

Natsumi stepped into the operating theater of the hospital and began to call out orders for the assistants in the room. Off to the side, a cooler with the to-be-transplanted kidney sat ready and waiting while Kotori, sedated, lay down on the operating table. Once everyone was ready, Natsumi was quick to begin. First she began with a long incision into the girls lower stomach and began to feel around for her left kidney. Natsumi brushed it with her gloved fingers and nodded before she began to remove the, albeit healthy, organ. A few well placed cuts and snips here and there was all she needed for it to come loose and out. They'd use this one for someone who did match it and needed a real transplant.

Kotori's original left kidney out, Natsumi moved onto the next part of the procedure. She had one of the assistants fetch the prepared Senju-kidney and bring it to her. Natsumi went back in through the same incision and placed the new kidney in the spot of the old. It didn't take her long to reconnect the blood vessels to the organ nor to her bladder. An assistant stood off to the side with sutures and scissor ready as Natsumi looked around for them. With a quick thanks, she took hold of the scissors and began to carefully suture each of the blood vessels where they needed to be. The poor girl would probably pee blood for a few days following this but it'd clear up in a week or two.

Natsumi looked up at the clock hanging on the wall and was surprised to see nearly two hours had passed since they had started. The kidney was in place and accepted by Kotori's body with a little help of some iijutsu here and there. They would monitor for a few more hours to make sure everything was fine but for now, she was done. The stitches and staples holding the incision together would be treated with iijutsu once they were sure it was accepted as they wheeled Kotori off to a patient room to rest and recover.

Kotori's meeting with the messengers to the Tsuchikage had been short but thorough, and though she did not refuse the summons, her questions had continued all the way to the general hospital. This was not the first time she had been summoned, with no prior warning or preparation, for a dangerous medical procedure. And she did not intend to go in as blind to this one as the last. On the other hand, anything they could do to her now would pale in comparison to the sealing of Nolosha no Ukiyogenma, short of removing the beast form her entirely. That thought set her mind to panic—she was surprised to find the idea of being separated from the genma abhorrent, despite her fear of it—but the medical staff were quick to reassure her. More than that, they spoke in great detail to her about what was to happen, and why. Synergy with the genma. A new style of secret ninjutsu, seized as the spoils of war. The concept intrigued her, and once she understood the details and implications she readily agreed to the procedure.

Almost as soon as the consent was spoken she was launched into preparation, and within minutes medical staff stood over her administering various injections and muttering over their clipboards. Behind them lurked a concerning number of senior shinobi, all ready and watching Kotori very, very closely. Or , more likely, watching for any sign of the genma. She hoped there would be enough of them if it came to that; many had not survived the beast during her sealing. She tried to count them, wondering if any were survivors of that fateful day, but their faces began to blur and her vision darkened.

Nyūsen Natsumi had an expert hand at surgery, but even she was surely slowed in the procedure by Kotori's unexpected regenerative abilities. The genin's body, filled with the essence of Life itself, fought the incisions almost as soon as the scalpel touched flesh, until some supplementary iijutsu and medication helped slow and counter the effects. Kotori herself did not yet know the extent of that innate regenerative power, having only discovered its effects once prior while on a mission to the south. Her blood and flesh would seem to shimmer with a faint golden sheen, and once the new organ was accepted it too would bleed to a similar lustre. After the procedure was complete and the drugs can began to wear off, the soft golden glow that wrapped around her body surely helped to minimise any painful or problematic after-effects. Her body had seemingly accepted the new organ as one of her own.

Consciousness returned only a few hours after the procedure. Kotori opened blearly eyes to a room still occupied by a few shocked medical staff.

"I—" her throat was dry, her tongue sluggish in her mouth. "...Is it done?" Her limbs still felt heavy, and a tingling across her abdomen slowly eased into a dull ache, then a sharp one. But then she felt the beast stir deep within, and tranquility washed over her once more. This... wasn't so bad. And she felt something else in Nolosha's touch. Approval? Eagerness? She drifted back off to sleep, unsure but satisfied.
