The Tamashii Kui

Laying down on his bed, Kohaku was trying not to think of the horrible pain in his stomach. The boy had awoken late in the night with terrible feeding pains. It wasn't unusual, and the experience usually came in waves. For three or four days Kohaku's body would be wracked with awfully sharp chest pains. Kohaku was still young, he didn't know what was causing these aches, all he knew was that he wanted more than anything for them to stop. For when Kohaku felt the hunger pains, his mind was sent to a horrible place. A place where he didn't dare step foot alone.

In the past Kohaku had acted out of impulse and killed one of his own clansman while out on a mission in Rock Country. It was a horrifying experience, and to this day Kohaku didn't know what had brought the awful urge on in him. One minute he was focusing on the hunt of a village breaking bear, and the next he was carving up the flesh of a young Akari girl and feeding on her Shiin. Kohaku remembered the taste of the girls Melashiin well. It was rough and his teeth didn't cut it up. Kohaku had to swallow it whole, but for a Melashiin it wasn't too long. The taste was bitter like medicine, but something about the awful taste excited Kohaku. Ever since that day he was haunted by the taste of Shiin, though the haunting was bittersweet. Deep down Kohaku loved the act of cannibalism.

This love, this passion, cause Kohaku a lot of grief. He was a soft boy. Without a mother growing up, Kohaku learned on his father for emotional support. Support the man couldn't afford his child, and so Kohaku grew up with a splintered psyche. When he wanted admiration he was met with ignorance, and when he deserved admonishment he was put on a pedastool. It was hard to raise a child alone, but Kohaku's father did the best he could. Kohaku was a mostly normal boy. He smiled and laughed, but there was something that didn't jive inside of him.

This darkness was an emptiness deep inside of Kohaku's soul. Kohaku was born with a broken soul. When his spirit was ready to move to his body, Kohaku's mind wasn't ready and so it rejected the soul. As a result Kohaku's spirit was scattered to the winds. By the grace of God spirits were fortunate enough to piece him mostly together in time for his birth, but sadly Kohaku was not all there. Where his soul was shattered, his mind was frayed. He simply did not coexist with the world peacefully. Kohaku always felt a strong urge to kill and feast on his clan mates, and he didn't know why. It bothered him greatly.

The strong desire to devour was not just coincidence, as nothing involves the soul was merely struck by chance. Deep inside of fate there was a tale being spun.

As any noble heroes, Kohaku's body was beyond the average Akari's. He possessed an eighth chakra pool. It was ever so faint, but deep inside of his crown chakra there was a sister pool of energy, fit only for the body of an ascended human being. When Kohaku's spirit pressed onto his body, his mind knew that the average human spirit couldn't sync up with his extraordinary body and so it rejected the critical moment of gestation. Of course when this happened there was a reaction to Kohaku's soul being bounced away from his body His soul was split into several pieces, and spirits were tasked with putting him together. Unfortunately they couldn't find all of his soul and part of Kohaku will remain forever lost. This will never be solved.

Fortunately for Kohaku the eighth chakra in his body reacted with the fragments of his soul that the spirits pieced together. When the three parts of Kohaku, his body, mind and spirit, were joined, his body began creating a new Shiin. This shin was incomplete however, and would remain undetectable in Kohaku's body for many years. This Shiin, the Kiroshiin, was a nearly never before seen ability of the Akari and possessed mighty powers but it came with a great price. Kohaku's soul was incomplete, and though it was sufficiently built to sustain life, Kohaku would yearn for a complete soul his whole life That is until he used his eighth chakra, the Soul Chakra, to mend his soul. That was, after all, the purpose of the Soul Chakra.

This meant that Kohaku would always yearn for souls by hungering for the taste of Shiin. The Shiin held strong ties to the Akari's soul by the chakra pools they attached themselves to, and this meant Kohaku would always have an instinctual taste for the delectable organ. The hunger Kohaku felt for Shiin was unlike anything a normal mortal felt. When his body reached out for the sustenance of spirit all of Kohaku's body burned with pain. Every cell in his body was compressed by the pressure of hunger, and every ounce of his will was put into maintaining his composure. Often Kohaku would fall down in pain when these hunger frenzies came over him. The worst part of his frenzies was not the physical pain, the gut wrenching agony was only half of the battle. The real pain Kohaku felt was mental anguish. When a hunger frenzy would come on Kohaku would be filled with an overwhelming sense of dread. As if his favorite cat just died Kohaku would enter a depressive episode and become incredibly moody. When the pain became too unbearable the uneasiness would crack and Kohaku would enter full blown fits of rage, frustrated from his constant suffering and denial of Shiin.

On the surface Kohaku valued the lives of people greater than nearly anything in his life. Working as a ninja was an honor because he got to study the art of saving people. Kohaku considered himself a guardian. When the hunger pains hit him though, Kohaku would lose himself to the winds of change. Nothing could calm him but fear of prison. Sometimes Kohaku would lay in bed dwelling on his pain and the idea of killing his father for his Shiin. He would lay in bed lawing at his arms, miserable with anxiety for his dark thoughts.

Deep down though, Kohaku saw the value of Shiin, he was a ninja after all and Shiin were weapons. His own Shiin, the one he knew of, was a Phasmashiin, the most weaponize of all the Akari organs. Deep down Kohaku wanted to yearn for Shiin, it was reassuring to him in a way, to know that power was out there for him to take. The temptation was all too real for young Kohaku.

Stretched out in his bed, Kohaku sighed and turned over. He wanted more than anything for the hunger pains to go away. For the thoughts of Shiin to be free from his mind. Kohaku grabbed at his gut and haunched over in bed. When his body ached like this he couldn't help but remember when he first killed, when he first tasted a Shiin. That was when he realized his body was different than everyone elses. That was when his Phasmashiin evolved.

When Kohaku swallowed that Shiin his whole mind felt clear as day. He could finally focus, the fog was gone. Then his body began to vibrate in place. Covered in the genin's blood he began convulsing on the floor. The energy of his former comrades Melashiin was resonating with Kohaku's own Phasmashiin and as it was Kohaku's eighth chakra pool began working hard to retrieve soul data from the Melashiin. As the extraction occurred the young Kohaku was fraught with a high he had never imagined. Kohaku's body was reacting too. His Phasmashiin began mutating and altering it's shape becoming more serrated.

In the coming days Kohaku was terrified of what he had done. The threat of police intervention terrified him. It was strictly unlawful for an Akari to kill outside eof the arena, and more than that Kohaku had killed a team mate while working for the village of Iwagakure. It was no joking matter what had occurred, and the results were equally as serious. When Kohaku tested out his phasmashiin again in battle he was pleasantly surprised by the evolutions. His sword was lighter and faster, and most impressively when he cut into something the sword released a small explosion. Kohaku was very happy with his new potential in battle, but that didn't change how he felt about what he had done. Kohaku knew his life would be over if he ever told anyone what had happened. On the training grounds of his village, still holding his exploding Phasmashiin, Kohaku swore on his life to never speak of what had happened, and if he ever discovered what was going on with his body he would make it up to that girl, somehow. Kohaku had tears streaming down his face as he tightly gripped his sword in the twilight hours.

Laying in bed still, Kohaku was crying. He couldn't take the pain anymore, he was going to go absolutely insane if it carried on a second longer. Kohaku grabbed his pillow by the teeth and started screaming. His dad heard his son, but he was so used to it by now that he simply turned over in bed and closed his eyes. It was just another day for Kohaku, the legatee of the Akari Clan. He had no idea that there was such a vibrant energy working in his body, a miracle living inside him. Kohaku knew he wasn't normal. He had heard of mutated Shiin, but he never imagined he would be with one. More than that though, Kohaku's Kiroshiin was growing. It would soon reveal itself to Kohaku, and the ninja would finally get a better idea of what was going on with his life.
