[Catacombs Event] First Contact

Post by Niro » Tue Dec 12, 2017 8:25 pm

Mitsutabe let out a grunt of effort as he pulled closed the twin, chain-linked fence doors which led into the Catacombs beneath the portion of Iwagakure no Sato which was already build deep into the mantle of the earth. He clasped a metal lock between two chain links before releasing the item from his hand and allowing it to clang loudly against the fence. It was his first day on guard duty for the week. The Catacombs were a habitual haunt of the many teenagers within Iwagakure no Sato and the village found it necessary to have a chuunin be on guard in front of the gates after closing hours. Mitsutabe sighed before taking his place at his guard post, facing the long hallway which grew into a set of stairs. The hallway was swimming in torch light, each side of it peppered with torches to provide some light and heat to the area. Another small torch hung suspended from the wall in front of his own guard post which was made out of a simple stone booth with a decently comfortable chair, a desk space, and several bits of paperwork he was given as busywork.

Another sigh escaped his lips as he began going over the paperwork, his dull grey eyes scanning over each word at a snail’s pace in an effort to waste as much time as possible before he had to actually get up unless he fall asleep. The boring paperwork in front of him was one of his fears as a chuunin. When he was a genin, he was on missions at most times even if they were something simple such as fixing a fence. Compared to his time as a chuunin, which was spent filing paperwork or doing other mundane tasks in the function of an administrator assistance, his time spent as a genin was much more fulfilling on a day-to-day basis. Sure, he’d be sent out on some actual mission every once in a blue moon but there wasn’t much use for someone of his skillset.

His eyes continued to read over the paperwork but in time, the young chuunin’s eyes were lulled to sleep and he fell into a light slumber. His head eventually slipped off of his hand causing his face to slam into the desk surface and jar him awake. He gasped in surprise before looking around and making sure no one had seen him or that he had been caught. A preliminary check showed him still by himself but in the mean time it appeared someone had attempted to jump the gate and gotten a piece of clothing caught and ripped off. He jumped to his feet before ascending to the top of the fence to retrieve the fabric. He easily plucked the material off the top before jumping off and landing in a crouch. A wide smile split his face as this meant he would have someone to kick out tonight rather than do nothing for 12 hours. His inspection revealed it to be a bottom hem of a dress. Maybe some kids sneaking in for a place to have some alone time? Not while he was on the job…

The young chuunin whipped the fence lock key from his pocket before jiggling it in and unlocking the mechanism. He pulled the chain free of the door before entering the compound and reaching through the small opening between the posts to relock the gate. He pulled his arms back before turning around and taking one of the many torches off of the wall of the Catacombs. Before him was another staircase going down lined with many torches. With a gulp, he began his descent deeper in the bowls of the earth. His trip down the staircase was not long but enough for Mitsutabe to work up a sweat on the stairs. He eventually hit the bottom plateau of the complex which gave way to several different hallways, all lined with the same type of torches (honestly whoever supplied them made a killing). Each wall of the hallways was carved out to allow for mummified bodies to lay to rest. Many of these cubbies were covered with ornate covers as to give the dead some form of privacy. He shivered at the thought of being surrounded by dead bodies before steeling himself and heading down the center most hallway. His gut feeling was telling him they had went the easiest path and that this would be as simple as baking a pie. He sprinted down the hallway which gave way into a dead end with another set of hallways going down the left and right. He sighed as he thought for a moment before taking the right hallway and continuing his light jog through the Catacombs.

This hallway opened up into a much larger tomb, finally, as Mitsutabe came to a stop. He squinted his eyes and lowered his torch to the plague underneath the small mausoleum in front of him. The name was covered in a thick layer of dust but his title of bannin was not. The young chuunin narrowed his eyes before falling into a crouch and beginning to look around the room. This was a dead end either they were hiding or he was in the wrong place. He gazed around the room trying to find something out of place before his eyes locked onto a piece of the way which appeared to be covered in some sort of paint. Plucking the lone kunai from his belt, the young man made his way over to the section of the wall and began to pick at the paint to rid the wall of the hideous off color.

His eyes widened, however, when the ‘paint’ revealed itself to not be paint but rather a much thinner part of the tomb. His small prodding and picking had done enough work for cracks to begin running through the rest of the section. He gulped loudly before he knocked on the section of the wall and it collapsed at his feet to reveal a tight tunnel leading deeper into the earth. His heart was beating in his chest and it felt as though he couldn’t breathe as he realized he had desecrated the resting place of a bannin. A cool draft emanating from the tunnel broke his thoughts however and caused him to blink. A…draft? What?

Slowly he began his way through the tunnels, his torch leading the way. His trip down this dark, winding path was much longer than his trek down the stairs and it went down much deeper than they had as well. At some places he had actually begun to slip and slide down loose flooring and tight angles. Eventually, his torch ran out of fuel and the blackness surrounding him kicked in. He gulped loudly and started to breathe loudly again, his body beginning to hyperventilate before he kicked some mental sense into himself and continued in the darkness.

After what seemed like hours, he finally reached the bottom of the shaft and tumbled out onto a platform. His eyes blinked in confusion as he lay there, the cool draft surrounding his body. He pulled himself into a crouch before thanking whichever gods were above he possessed multiple affinities of katon, raiton, and doton. Several hand seals were shifted through before he threw out a blast of ration chakra into the blackness in an attempt to light up the area. The remaining color held in his face bled out as the blast continued on and on, and on and on. Finally, it fizzled out before ever reaching the edge of the massive cavern the boy had fallen into.

The cavern he had fallen into was massive, big enough to hold another Iwagakure no Sato in his mind at least. The fact this area had remained hidden for however long was something incredible and he couldn’t wait to tell hi-

Something was wrong. He heard something. With bated breath, he continued to wait until loud tapping noises finally broke the silence. He began sealing and breathed out a ring of fire around him, lighting the area up however briefly to find him face-to-face with a massive spider. The spider itself equaled him in height and was equally as wide. He screamed as loud as he could, bringing up his sole kunai as a massive leg came cutting through the air aimed to pierce him through. The blade reflected the strike but did nothing to help the fangs clamping shut on his shoulder. Another cry broke through the cavern, echoing repeatedly as poison entered his veins and he was dragged off into the dark.
