[Plotboard] What Once Was Lost

Post by Valkier » Mon Apr 30, 2018 12:00 pm

Kiyoshi hurtled across the open field, scrabbling over rocks and gasping for breath with her blood pounding in her head. She skidded on a patch of loose rocks, bare feet alive with stabbing pain, and narrowly avoided opening her head on a jagged boulder as she fell, hitting the ground on her side. This was not going to plan. Using the boulder as cover, she rolled to one side and crawled forward, then rose to a crouch and, legs burning from long use, dragged herself around behind another. The first boulder burst into a hundred tiny fragments a moment later, and she yelped as the deafening shockwave hit and a shard of rock lanced across her exposed hand. Definitely not going to plan, and gone were the days where mistakes in training left only bruises. Looking around her frantically, ears still ringing from the blast, she kicked out to create another scree of rocks as a distraction and, gripping her quarterstaff in a white-knuckled grip, darted in the opposite direction. Ducking low, she shifted from cover to cover until rounding one last pillar of rock and descending upon her foe, weapon darting out high, and fast, and decisive.

She barely managed to pull her strike short. Instead of standing ready to face her, to dodge or counter, her opponent’s attention was focused off to the side, where a third man - a new arrival to the training arena - stood watching her stiffly. Her training partner turned to her with a look of panic and jumped backwards as the wind of the quarterstaff’s thrust brushed against him, and then he levelled a glare at her.
”Di.n’t ..ou ..ear? …t’s over! Craz.. Wo..n…”

She stared at him blankly, barely able to hear over the ringing in her ears, the pumping of her blood, and her rasping breath. What? Over? She slapped a hand against one of her ears - wincing at the spike of pain - until her hearing began to return. Her training partner shook his head, then nodded back to the man who had, with his arrival, interrupted their training.

”Kenitsuna-san,” The newcomer beckoned her over and thrust a sealed scroll into her hands as she approached. ”You are to report immediately.” He paused to give her a derisive look up and down. ”…Though a bit more preparation might not go amiss.” Kiyoshi scowled, broke the seal on the scroll, and began reading, the messenger already put out of her mind.

A short time later, having washed her face and changed to a clean robe while grabbing her usual mission equipment, Kiyoshi arrived at an entrance to Iwagakure’s underground. The mission summons in the scroll were frustratingly concise - report here, meet a colleague, then proceed to the entrance of the Catacombs within for a full briefing. Furthermore, it seemed she was first to arrive, so she’d have to wait. She set down her satchel - tightly packed with a few short lengths of wood, with oil and rags to use as torches, as well as a few days’ supply of food and water - and sat herself down to wait. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply, taking the opportunity to recover from the hard morning of training before the mission began. She’d have to put up with the scrapes and bruises, but she could at least catch her breath while waiting for her comrade-to-be…

For Sun to say he was excited would be a gross underestimate. This was what he had craved for so the long, the chance to enter the Catacombs beneath the village. His previous attempts to be apart of an expedition had been met with denial and disappointment, but now, here it was, a scroll detailing summons to the Catacombs for a further mission briefing. In his preparations for the night before... or perhaps, over-preparation, he studied what information he had access to on the Catacombs, along with making sure he had the gear necessary for a bit of spelunking. Blank scrolls.... blank tags... kunai... rations... water... rope... by the time he was finished it all, it was past midnight, and he had fallen asleep at his desk. When woke up, he found the sun already in the sky, and knew instantly he'd over slept.

After a quick shower, followed by an even quicker breakfast consisting of three slices of toast and a boiled egg, which he actually ate as he left the house, he was well on his way to the entrance. "Can't believe I over-slept. That's so unlike me. Worse yet, I'm pretty sure one of these pieces of toast is just regular bread." He mumbled to himself as he leapt from rooftop to rooftop, taking an express and direct route. He arrived to find someone already at the entrance waiting for him. She was sitting down, her eyes closed. Was she asleep? "Ah, Um... excuse me?" He started, munching down on his second piece of toast. "You wouldn't happen to be waiting to head down, would you?" He gestured towards the entrance to the Catacombs with his head. He hoped she was.

Kiyoshi opened her eyes at the question, and turned to look upon what must be her new comrade. What reassurance she gained from his appearance - tall, fit, and a good couple of years her senior - was slightly marred by the way he stood eating infront of her, suggesting that his preparation for the day ahead was haphazard at best. Still, she reasoned, someone with a few more years of experience is great. It must be nice to approach missions so confidently. She nodded a greeting and stood up to join him.

“I am,” she confirmed, then stuck out a hand to shake his. ”I’m Kiyoshi. Chuunin. What’s your name?” She wasn’t proud enough of her family name to bother including it in her greeting, though if her new colleague knew anything about the Kenitsuna, the small golden charm hanging from a simple bracelet of brass links around the wrist of her outstretched hand would be identification enough.

Once introductions were finished, she’d pick up her satchel and nod towards the entrance to the underground.
”Are you ready?” Part of her wanted to get to know this stranger before they begun, but if the rumours about the Catacombs were true - that they ran for endless, winding miles - they’d have plenty of time to get better acquainted during their mission. Best to get started, instead of wasting time up here waiting in anticipation of what might lie ahead, she reasoned.

No sooner had Sun asked her of her preparedness, his mind wandered as he imagined what lie within the depths of the Catacombs. He, like most in the village, had heard a rumor or two. Kilometers of tunnels , an actual labyrinth hiding quite literally underneath their noses, for centuries. He was actually jittery with anticipation, his fingers snapping quietly, a habit of his to curb his energy or excitement for a project or assignment. He absentmindedly finished off his last actual piece of toast, and started chewing on the white bread. Something made him break form his trance. He managed to catch the girls name, and he had to admit, it was a odd one.

"Well, Kiyoshi Chuunin, it's good to meet you. You can call me Sun. Or Wu. My name is Wu Sun. Or Sun Wu. Whichever of those you like best, it's your choice." He spoke somewhat quickly, though his tone was very articulated and formal. He made sure to pronounce each syllable correctly and with purpose, as if this were some kind of spelling bee. He actually took note of Kiyosihi's appearance. She resembled a monk, and had she not spoken to him, he'd have assumed she was a boy... or rather, still assumed. His hand continued snapping until he forced it to stop. "When I say I have been ready for years, it is no an understatement.

The entrance to the Catacombs was within the cemetery below the main village of Iwagakure no Sato. The duo of shinobi hired for this mission had gathered around the elevator which would lead them into the Catacombs themselves. Two hardened guards wearing stock uniforms of Iwagakure, which consisted of khaki colored shorts and a drab brown shirt with the flak jacket of the village worn over it, and wielding glaives stood on either side of the earth elevator and listened to the conversation going on in front of them. The two turned their heads to look at each other and nodded before the guard on the left stepped forward and brought his hand to his mouth to cover it while also clearing his throat.

“We’re ready to take you down whenever.” He spoke, his eye sweeping over each and every member of the team in front of him. The guard looked back to his partner and nodded as the two of them stepped onto the elevator. The cemetery wall which had been the initial point of contact with the Catacombs had been excavated and widened into a round room lit with many torches on the wall and several standing torches stuck into the ground. The elevator itself was the very floor of the room and if one were to look closely at the ground they would see fuuinjutsu carved into it. The guards waited until both of the members were in the room before the same guard which had spoken to them performed a set of hand seals and touched his hand to the floor.

The floor all of them had been standing on began to rumble and shake before beginning to descend at a moderate rate. The elevator continued its descent for several dozen minutes as it took the duo standing on it a mile below the lowest point of the village. Slowly the elevator rumbled to a stop at the bottom of the shaft and once they would look out of it they would see a small forward operating base made up of several smaller tents, standing torches every couple of feet, and the farthest away from their position a large tent with the symbol of Iwagakure emblazoned on the front shrouded in a thick blanket of darkness. If any of them attempted to look up they’d be greeted by a sight akin to staring into the void while if they went to the edge of the camp they would find the same sight but also realize they were located on the edge of a massive cliff whose bottom was not able to be seen.

The guard cleared his throat again before speaking. “Jounin Commander Hibiki is awaiting you within his tent. I assume you can figure out which tent would be his.” The guard spoke as he awaited them to get off of the elevator before reperforming the needed hand seals and touching the ground to move the elevator back up to the top.

"You too, Sun Or Wu," Kiyoshi flashed a small grin as she led the way towards the Catacombs entrance. He still sounded very confident, which she supposed was a good thing, and so far seemed amiable about working together. She attempted some idle smalltalk as they walked, but soon enough they met the guards at the elevator, and she cut off to give them a nod. Thankfully their arrival must've been pre-arranged, and they were quickly escorted forward into the elevator.
She watched with no small interest as one of the guards activated a web of engraved seals in the floor, and felt her stomach drop as the entire room suddenly lurched into motion. Although she pieced together the logic of the elevator, she wasn't sure how she felt about being inside a moving chunk of earth, with nothing but fuuinjutsu - and perhaps a little doton - keeping them from a grisly burial. She kept her mouth shut as they descended, and tried to think about the mission ahead. The Catacombs. A huge, expansive network of tunnels and caverns, sprawling far beneath an oblivious Iwagakure. How deep could they possibly go?

When the elevator finally stopped, she stepped briskly off of the platform looking only a little pale-faced, and then paused to hear the guards' instruction.

"This way, then. How many people are down here, I wonder?" She led the way away from the elevator and into the small camp, following a line of torches towards the far large tent. Large or not, it seemed wholly insignificant compared to the vastness of the open cavern around them, and she zoned out for a moment while staring upwards, outwards, and down from the cliff's edge. "Who could've imagined that this was down here... All along..."

Sun had already begun daydreaming again, missing out on Kiyoshi Chuunin's little joke with his name. He was distantly aware that she had been making some comments, but he hadn't really had a chance to respond or even register before they came to the guards on the elevator. He heard of the elevators before from researchers, but never really got a full understanding of how they worked. Based on the room that they entered, he'd guessed that it was some sort Doton cooperation jutsu. "So how exactly does this-" He was cut off by the sudden shift in the floor, caused by the seals within the very ground. His eyes widened and seemed to light up like jewels, as a mix of shock and awe came across his face. Seals? They operated this elevator using seals?! That was... that was amazing! Of course, he knew of the utility application of Fuuinjutsu outside of combat, he'd designed a few himself, but he'd never though of something like this!

He knelt down on the floor, running his hand across the glowing etched symbols, noting their design and making mental notes of them. He'd definitely have to ask about the formula for it, or at the very least the principles. Then it'd be a short order to testing it out for himself and putting his own little twist on it. It was kind of similar to the Moving Earth Core techinque, in that it altered the elevation of a certain area of the ground to the user's will.

He was only made aware of the halt in the elevators movements by the seal's cease in glowing, after which he looked and stood up. So this was it? The Catacombs. They were still very much only at the entrance, but the excitement swelled inside of him. He was finally here. Following Kiyoshi towards the camp, he heard both of her questions. "I imagine a few dozen or so. Research teams, medical teams, scout teams, logistics, et cetera. An operation on this scale would take quite a bit of manpower. And I imagine we aren't actually the first down here. It is a cavern system after all, no one knows where it ends. For all we know, it could lead out of our country and into a another. Though, I admit, the chance is unlikely.

After the two chuunin finished looking around and admiring their first view of the Catacomb, they’d enter the commander’s tent. Inside, they'd find a single, middle-aged man of above average height leaning over a desk with a single lantern hung at the top of the tent which was bright enough to light the tent with ease.

The Jounin Commander's hair was black with specks of silver throughout it. His sideburns were also graying at this point in his life and his face was separated into different planes with hard lines. His ice blue eyes were sharp and focused as they focused on the map laid out on the large desk within the tent.

"You must be the team tasked with finding the first team then." Hibiki commented as he straightened up and locked his eyes onto them while they filed in. He waited until both chuunin were in the tent before he sat in the single chair behind the desk. "We've had three teams go missing already down here. Your mission is to find the first team, which was our first team down here to find and rescue the chuunin guard who discovered the entrance, and find what caused them to go missing. The only surviving member of the first team mentioned the halls being lined with old traps. She is top side at this point and in a medically induced coma to prevent her from worsening her injuries. If the first team is alive, recover them. If not, retreat back."

"Flares, rations, and other such equipment are located within the many crates of the camp. You are welcome to use as many as you wish on your mission. Behind the camp and towards the cliff edge you'll find multiple large coils of rope staked into the ground. The rope only reaches about a third of the way down the cliff side, you'll have to use surface walking to reach the bottom. Carved into the sides of the mountain are various caves. These ropes are your only way down the mountain. These are NOT, I repeat, NOT your objectives. Within those caves lie a colony of massive spiders according to Team 18. These spiders range in size from small dogs to the size of multiple story buildings. We know the first team is not located within one of these caves.

"Once you reach the bottom of the cliff, if you go left you'll walk a distance before coming across what seems like a forest of large fossilized trees. They are not trees however, they are the remains of whatever giants lie down here. The area is a graveyard and is home to many packs of giant rats, easily towering twelve to fifteen feet in height. Based on how large the spiders can grow, we estimate there to be a 'boss' rat of sorts as well, easily larger than any rat you may find. Avoid it at all costs and if you run into it...run for your lives. Once you reach the bottom of the cliff, you are to go right, rather than left. You should not have to encounter this area unless you get lost, in which case we’ll have to send another team down to recover you as well."

"There are also giant, talking cockroaches down there and located around the graveyard. According to Team 18 as well, these cockroaches are friendly. Do not harm them. They are our only ally down in this hell hole. To the right of the bottom of the cliff is where the first team ventured. Their mission was to go and find the chuunin guard. Your job is different, figure out the cause of the first teams disappearance and bring back any survivors. Now, get out of my sight."
Hibiki waved at them, signaling them to get the hell out of his tent and on with the mission.

Once inside the tent, Kiyoshi gave a brief bow and introduced herself formally - with her full name, this time - and stood to attention as the camp commander gave his briefing. At first the task sounded relatively straightforward - a rudimentary search and rescue op - though the fact that the rescue party was just two people, whereas three whole teams had gone missing already, gave her no small amount of concern. Then, of course, came the complication that they were searching wholly uncharted, and verifiably dangerous, underground catacombs. As the briefing continued, Kiyoshi's wariness only increased; giant spiders, giant graveyards, giant rats, and giant cockroaches - talking, friendly giant cockroaches... It was a lot to take in so quickly.

She opened her mouth to ask for details on the first teams' reports - it surely sounded like they needed every scrap of intel they could get - but the Jounin Commander apparently had no interest in entertaining them further, nor did he seem the type to listen to questions. She found herself nodding, turning away and, unless Sun had anything else to add, leaving the tent quietly.

Back in the camp, she wasted little time in rummaging around in a supply crate and pulling out as many flares as she could securely stash under her belt, and added some extra rations to her bag. Towards the cliff, she collected two coils of sturdy rope, wrapping one diagonally across her torso and hanging the second, smaller coil from the back of her waist, where it would be accessible but not get in her way. Finally, she walked over to where the ground stakes held the pre-set ropes ready to descent, and waited for Sun to join her.

"What a charming guy he was," she'd joke dryly as Sun arrived. "I'd have liked to know a lot more, but I suppose it's our job to find out what's really down there. His instructions were plain enough, though I suspect we'll find a lot more than he neglected to mention. You ready?"
Once Sun agreed, she'd test the fixing of the rope against the its stake and take a secure hold of it, then lower herself carefully over the edge. Abseiling by small hops with her feet against the rock wall, she began the descent down and into the dark abyss.

Nearly three entire teams lost in the caverns? That certainly gave Sun a perspective on what he had actually been assigned to. He'd known it was a rescue mission of some kind, but he'd assumed it was to help search and rescue a trapped laborer, or researcher lost in one of the caverns, and man power couldn't be spared to look for them. This was, well, a bit concerning, to say the least. The stories he'd heard about the Catacombs always mentioned some form of giant insect or creature, but if what the Commander was saying was to be believed, there existed spiders whose heights measured in stories, not inches or even feet. If the teams had been caught by one of those, no doubt that they've long since been consumed.

And he called it a mountain? Underground? And ropes? That meant their was some measurable distance between the level of the camp, and that of the base of the Catacombs. Sun could almost feel the goosebumps rise on his skin, as anxiety began to climb up his spine. Technically, that meant they were... kind of high up? What would be the odds that his one phobia would manifest in a cavern network? Despite his growing nervousness, he managed to keep himself relatively relaxed, enough to commit his orders and directions to memory.

Once dismissed, he followed Kiyoshi towards the supplies. He already had brought rope as part of his own kit, approximately 3m of it, and had it wrapped around a loop at his waste. A few extra rations didn't hurt, as they didn't know how long they'd be down there. They'd also be useful as distractions for anything carnivorous they may come across. What he really needed, though, was to prepare his seals. Writing them during combat wasn't impossible, but it was by no means a easy task. Managing to find a pen to write with, he removed the 20 blank tags that he carried in his pouch, and and got to work.

First, he performed the simple hand signs needed to write his Fire Bomb seal, which he would place on 4 tags. Next, he'd perform the signs needed for his Illumination seal. Flares and torches were well and good, but in a pinch, or in case they lost them, the seals would prove a good measure. He created 3 of these. For his final measure he used 4 of his tags to write the Four Barrier Seal Formation. In a dire situation, it could provide a critical advantage. As he finished, he gathered up his remaining tags, and putting them back into his pouch.

On his way on, he managed to find a pouch containing 10 kunai, which he secured on his waist, on his left side. Joining Kiyoshi, he offered a smile at her attempted joke. Unlike before, his mind wasn't wandering. It was clear, and focused. On the seeming pit that lie below them. He rubbed his neck in nervousness and anxiety. "Uh.... Hmm. Yes. Yes. I'm... ready" He said so with a tremor to his voice. He followed her example, securing himself to the pre-made stakes, and descended down, slowly and meticulously. Each of his steps were careful and concentrated, as if he were afraid the whole cliff might come tearing down.

It helped though, that the darkness kind of obscured the bottom. He couldn't tell exactly how far down it was, which was comforting. A bit. "He mentioned old traps of some sort. Perhaps they found some sort of tomb or temple? You have to wonder what else is hiding in these caverns."

As the duo began to rappel slowly down the sheer cliff face, the light of the standing torches atop of the cliff began to fade and darkness began to swallow them up. The air surrounding them was not like one would expect from an old, forgotten cavern. In fact, a small yet pleasant breeze continually circulated around them and unlike the air above ground in Iwagakure no Sato, which was usually dry, this had some small amounts of humidity to it.

Finally the light from the base camp atop the cliff side was gone. Pressing in around them from all sides was a blackness so thick that they'd be unable to even see their hands in front of their faces. To go any lower without a form of light would be dangerous for even the most hardened shinobi.

As the pair of chuunin continued their descent, the pitter patter of feet and a light scraping noise penetrated throughout the cavern and began to move closer to them. If either of the chuunin dared to look below with their light sources, they would see a nondescript giant spider, taller than most men and standing at roughly twelve feet tall against the sheer cliff face. The giant black spider would stop moving as the light source was shone on it before rearing its head back and revealing within its fangs and forelegs a gigantic yet dead and bloody rat neatly wrapped up in web. The beast would release something akin to a hiss as it delved into the large mouth of a cave within the side of the cliff face.

They'd be smart to hurry up their descent lest the spider return with more of its kind.

Having descended first, Kiyoshi now led the way downwards unto darkness. Given the slight waver in Sun's confidence as they began, that was probably a good thing; with her ahead, he'd have no choice but to keep up and continue on, and the pair of them had to do so. As the last hints of light from above faded and darkness swallowed them completely, she slowed and stopped. For a moment she allowed herself to hang there, trying to become accustomed to the feeling of being utterly blind, halfway down a cliff that was in itself far below the ground. It was hard to convince herself that behind her was open nothingness; hovering over a bottomless void in pitch darkness, as it turned out, wasn't too dissimilar to standing in many other places in pitch darkness.

After a minute, she heard Sun catching up. She reached out and gently caught his leg as he came within reach, stopping him.

"Easy, it's me. Hold up a moment." she spoke ever so softly - it felt appropriate to do so, as if they were sneaking around at night - and tried not to alarm her new colleague. "I can't see a thing." Taking a firm grip on the rope, she let go with her other hand and fumbled blindly around her belt until she found the flares she'd taken from above. She snapped one alight and had to squeeze her eyes shut against the sudden eruption of radiance in her hand. Carefully, she tucked it upside-down into the back of her belt - glowing tip sticking out away from her clothing and illuminating behind her. Without turning to look down, she found another and snapped that alight as well, and kept this one in her hand.

Only then did she turn and glance downwards, and see the bloody, gaping maw of a spider. A gargantuan spider, apparently part way through feasting on a rat-like creature that itself was enormous. The second flare dropped from her hand in shock and sailed away past the creature as it hissed and scurried away.

"Oh, shit!!" She reeled back in horror and shock, and frantically gripped with both hands at the rope to stop herself from falling. "Sun, MOVE!" All pretense of moving quietly and carefully vanished from her mind as panic took over. Shifting the grip so that the sleeves of her robe covered her hands and protected her from rope burn, she paused only to haul Sun into motion behind her before she began leaping down the rock face in a hectic, daring descent. The rope whipped through her grip and she jumped and scrambled with her feet to go faster - but it still wasn't fast enough. Ahead, the flare she'd dropped continued to sail away down the cliff, into darkness. It didn't seem to stop.

The light from the flare tucked into her belt was enough to reveal the openings of caves all around the cliff face nearby. It took all of her willpower to force herself to stop there, tucking the rope around an arm and concentrating as she began to focus chakra into her feet. Luckily the act of tree climbing was such a rudimentary technique that she achieved it in a moment, despite her pounding heart. As soon as her feet stuck to the cliff, she abandoned the rope.

"Forget the rope! We have to move!" She called back to Sun, waiting just long enough to ensure he'd heard and could handle himself against the rock wall. The last thing she needed was him falling to his death - though being snatched up into the maw of a giant spider wasn't a nice alternative, either. As soon as she saw that he'd heard her, she turned and began sprinting down the side of the cliff, giving the caves as wide a berth as she could and watching the darkness for any sign of movement as she ran down and away.

What did that bastard say - At the bottom, go right? She didn't dare look behind for Sun now; her whole attention was on the darkness around her, and ahead, looking for any sign of the bottom. A small voice in the back of her head advised her to head straight down, and not begin running to the right any earlier, lest she stumble into something even worse and unknown...

The sudden grab of his leg in the darkest briefly caused Sun to tense in terror, and barely managing to suppress a scream. In his mind, he imagine that it must have been one of the spiders grasping, ready to snatch him from the security that his harness provided and drag him into the dark depths below, to suffer the same fates that those teams that had come before him suffered. His fears, thankfully, were stifled when he heard Kiyoshi's voice. It had been her who touched his leg, and had only done so to halt their progress downwards.

He winced as she lit her flares, the sudden brightness briefly blinding his sight, before his eyes adjusted to the light. How... much further down is it? He asked, preferring not to look directly down himself. The lack of an immediate answer, and their secondary light source plummeting below, caused Sun to peer arounf Kiyoshi, to see what she was staring at. He wished he hadn't. He'd caught the glimpse of the giant spider with what looked to be the remains of it's prey in its maw, before it hissed at them and quickly escaped into its cave.

"Oh, shit!!" Kiyoshi's sudden outburst had caught him by surprise, a sudden shift in her demeanor a mere few moments ago. "Sun, MOVE!" He watched as she messed with her own rope harness, before reaching towards him and PULLING him with her, causing him to lose his grip on his rope and his balance, leaving him to hurtle down the chasm. AAAHHHHH! He tumbled through the air for a few moments, his arm scratching the side of the cliff once, ripping his sleeve. The light from Kiyoshi's flare only served now to make his own surroundings darker, so, in panic, he performed the sign for Kai, and activated one of his Illumination Seals, which shone brightly through his pouch, giving him some measure of sight and orientation.

"Forget the rope! We have to move!" It was a good thing that he'd long since lost any control over his harness, then. Seeing her abandon her own rope, Sun acted quickly and performed Kai again, this time causing a Kunai to appear in a poof of smoke from his gauntler, having been sealed their by him for emergencies, which this, in his mind, qualified as. Snatching the Kunai out of the air, he twisted behind him and cut his harness, releasing him to free fall down the chasm. He kept his sight from the bottom of the chasm, as it would only instigate his anxiety, which he did not need right now.

Orientating himself , he stabbed his Kunai into the wall of the chasm, enough to give him some measure of stability on his descent, but not enough to completely halt it. He slide down the chasm in this fashion, right behind Kiyoshi.

The two chuunin were lucky. The rest of the colony was deep within the cliff side at this point in time and the beast of a spider they had seen had been the last of a hunting party coming back with food for the rest. The party had gathered enough for the day, at least, and had no reason to chase a particularly troublesome meal.

The flare Kiyoshi had dropped into the blackness below them had been swallowed up quickly before impacting the ground much farther below them and sitting there, fizzling in the darkness all by its lonesome.

Kiyoshi had been smart in her approach to use the act of surface walking. It'd allow her to move at a pace where she'd be able to outrun any dangers from above and move relatively quickly down the remaining 2/3rds of a mile of the cliff side. Sun, however, was a tad bit unlucky. His kunai had caught the cliff side easily and as he began to slide the blade would begin to quickly dull due to the speed of his descent and it only being a standard issue kunai. Within 300 meters of him first stabbing it against the cliff wall, it would become so dull to the point of its top half chipping off and leaving the young man once again in a free fall against the side of the cliff.

Assuming the boy was able to once again stabilize himself on his trip down to the bottom, the duo would eventually reach the bottom of the cliff side and find the flare thrown down earlier. It was losing steam at this point, the light of the flare noticeably weaker than it had been previously. Now it was up to the two chuunin to find the missing team and avoid the traps which had put the remaining team member in a coma before she had been able to give any sort of report.

Kiyoshi's robes billowed around her as she ran full-tilt down the vertical cliff, the sound of her pounding heart forming a harmony with her footfalls and the steady scraping noise from Sun's kunai behind her. Suddenly that noise ceased, and she shot a glance over her shoulder just in time to witness her comrade's weapon break, and him floundering in open air. Sending a surge of chakra down to her feet to increase the strength of her technique, she spun mid-stride and grappled Sun as he fell past her.

Unfortunately, her partner-in-arms was both far larger and heavier than she, and her attempt to catch him forced a grunt as the wind was knocked from her lungs. For a moment she lost her footing and began tumbling through the darkness, still trying to hold Sun, until she managed to right herself and reattach her feet safely to the wall.
"Got you!" But her success was short lived. Sun's weight began dragging her downwards, threatening to make her lose control of her descent, and so she had to slow down. She glanced behind her as she did so, still anxious despite the fact that she hadn't seen any danger after that first spider.

"Can you manage, or do I have to haul you all the way to the bottom?" She asked tersely. If he gave any sign of assent - or, more accurately, unless he clung to her like an abandoned puppy desperate to be carried - she would quickly and unceremoniously let go, dropping him and allowing him to finish his own descent.

At the bottom, she hopped free from the cliff face and cancelled her walking technique, turning mid-air and landing neatly on the ground. She knelt down and tried to catch her breath for a moment while getting her bearings and peering around them for any sign of movement. The combination of sprinting and maintaining the surface walking technique was enough to notice, though she was still far from tired; which wasn't to say that her legs and arms weren't burning somewhat from the demanding descent.

"All right," she muttered to Sun once the ache started to subside. "It seems like we're in the clear for now. That was... a dramatic start. Sorry for pulling you back there; I thought it was either that or be eaten by that thing. You ok?" She dug around in her satchel and prepared a burning torch - oil soaked fabric around a sturdy spar of wood - and lit it from the dying remains of the flare. Although it wasn't as bright, it would burn for much longer, and allow her to conserve the flares for emergencies.

With the new light, she peered along the left of the cliff, but couldn't make out any signs of the graveyard or rats that the commander above had mentioned. So, as soon as Sun declared he was ready, she would begin moving in the opposite direction, following the cliff away to the right.

"Let's try be careful from now on... The next time we stumble into something, I don't want to rely on it running away. I wish we had a way to see without these obvious torches..." she muttered, walking quietly and watching the area infront of her with darting, alert eyes.

The sudden break in his Kunai had caught him off guard, and he felt himself begin to plummet once more into the depths. Kiyoshi's sudden grabbing of him from mid-air had also forced the air from his lungs briefly, as he his stomach had landed on one of her arms. He felt them slip further down the wall before she managed to steady them. "Got you!" He noticed her glance, and briefly worried that she'd suffer another panic attack, and cause the both of them to plummet once more.

"Can you manage, or do I have to haul you all the way to the bottom?" Sun bit back his initial response. He'd like to point out the only reason they were like this was because she'd decided to not only abandon her rope and sprint down the walls, but in the process pull him, wholly off guard, off his harness as well, causing his initial free fall. All he offered her was a quick nod, after which she'd drop him. Quickly going to his side, he pulled on of his Kunai from it's holster, and plugged it into the chasm wall, same as the previous, only this time he dug deep enough to halt his progress. He then focused enough chakra to his feet to begin a tense slide down the wall.

He arrived a few moments after Kiyoshi at the bottom. "It seems like we're in the clear for now. That was... a dramatic start. Sorry for pulling you back there; I thought it was either that or be eaten by that thing. You ok?" I'll live, for the moment, anyway. For the record, the spider had seemed to have little interest in us, as it already had a meal in it's mandibles. We didn't need to descend so... urgently. There was a bit of tension in his response, understandable from his point of view. Kiyoshi's panic had nearly flattened him against this very floor. He let out a sigh of relief, thankful at the very least for being on horizontal ground again.

While Kiyoshi prepared her torch, he would go to his pouch and remove the illuminated seal, which shone with a good amount of brightness, bathing the area around them in a soft blue light, as contrast to the orange that her torch produced. He attached the tag that bore the seal to his kunai, which he held in his grip like a torch which it's sharpened end directed towards the ground.

"Let's try be careful from now on... The next time we stumble into something, I don't want to rely on it running away. I wish we had a way to see without these obvious torches..." He stifled a scoff. Careful? He been perfectly content to slowly and carefully scale down the chasm. Even if the spider had caused them to pick up their pace, he'd still would have some degree of control over how he went down. He rubbed the bridge of his nose with his free hand, as he followed her. Yes, well, the bright light from my tag may serve to ward off the creatures of these caverns, since their eyes should be adapted to dark conditions. Your torch could serve as a non-chakra expensive measure against anything that possess a minor threat. I'd also advise to keep awareness in all directions, and not just the front. Who knows how may passages could be hidden by the shadow of our lights. It may very well be the reason for the other teams' disappearance.[/color

Been busy with work + org creation, sorry guys!
The trek along the right side of the base of the cliff was much less interesting than their descent down it. Unlike before, they had no fear of massive spiders ambushing them. What they did have to worry about, however, was whatever had incapacitated the previous team sent down this way.

Their torches provided enough light to see in their surrounding area but past that, the same oppressive darkness threatened to swallow them. After walking for a fair distance, the ground they walked upon began to slope downward at a minor decline. Beneath their feet, rocks and dust along with small pieces of other unimportant material crunched as the slope began to level out once again. In the distance in front of them, something was glowing in a low turquoise light. Once they'd reach the phenomenon, they'd be treated to a tunnel with a high ceiling illuminated by multiple clusters of bioluminescent mushrooms which grew all along the walls, ceiling, and on the sides of the tunnel floor. With the new source of light, they'd also be able to see darker spots staining some of the mushrooms. If they cared to look, they'd notice it was dried blood.

Continuing down the tunnel, they'd also begin to find more evidence of this being where they needed to. A broken tip from a kunai was embedded within the left wall and small scraps of cloth were strewn about the tunnel floor. Even further within the tunnel, they'd find it began to widen before being greeted to the sight of a body laying against the right side of the tunnel. Upon inspection they'd find the man littered with both large puncture wounds along his legs and his entire body being covered in nasty burns. The dirty yet still intact forehead protector plate sewn into the remains of his clothing would be enough evidence to realize they had found the second member of the three man team that had gone missing.

The questions now were 'What had happened here? What killed him?' and 'Where is the last member of the team?'

It would’ve been hard even for a deaf person to miss Sun’s disgruntled tone. Clearly he was less than happy with her after their frantic descent down the cliff - but it couldn’t be helped now, and she’d seen no better course at the time. Making a point not to respond and to instead just focus on the task at hand, Kiyoshi pushed forward into the darkness. The light from her torch was feeble compared to Sun’s tags, but she kept it anyway - it was reassuring to have light close to hand. With Sun’s observations, she made sure to keep watching all sides instead of only ahead.

Following the path as it began a gentle descent, she soon spotted the faint glow ahead and, shooting a questioning glance to Sun, approached with caution. Upon seeing the mushrooms, she paused and sniffed the air hesitantly, hoping to find it just as fresh as the rest of the cavern so far; any foul or toxic smell would have at first made her retreat, until she spotted the tell-tale bloodstains dotting the area. Stepping carefully around the mushrooms so as not to disturb them, she knelt over a patch of the blood and reached out to touch it.

”Blood here,” she muttered over her shoulder to Sun, ”but dried. I’d guess it’s a few days old… which means this is probably the right path, assuming it’s human.” She rubbed her fingers together and sniffed the blood, and even tried dabbing a bit onto her tongue for spitting it out, but her lack of medical knowledge made it impossible for her to tell for sure that it was human blood.

”Well, I didn’t see any other route we could’ve gone, and this is the best clue we could hope to find - nothing for it but to trust it’s the right one.” Still stepping carefully around the mushrooms, she continued forward down into the tunnel. She noted some of the scraps of cloth as she passed, and soon enough spotted the outline of the body as well. She stopped for a moment, peering into the depths of the tunnel, before slowly crossing to the body and kneeling down beside it. There wasn’t much use in feeling for a pulse, given the dried blood, charred skin, and countless holes in the corpse - but she did so anyway out of necessity.

”I don’t suppose you have any medical experience?” she glanced up at Sun hopefully. While there were several obvious causes of death, pinpointing exactly which had been the fatal one wasn’t obvious to her; and she could only guess as to what might have caused the puncture wounds. Both would’ve been handy to know if they proceeded any further. She examined the body as best she could in the half light, but soon gave up and instead tried to commit the man’s face to memory.

”What happened here… You poor man.” She whispered, putting a hand over his burnt face and closing what remained of his eyelids, before reaching to his forehead and carefully pulling his forehead protector off, then looping it through her belt. Unless Sun had some magical method to move whole bodies, the small plate of iwa-marked metal would have to serve as proof of their find.

”I was expecting to find a body or two, but this is beyond horrible. These burns, the puncture wounds… It looks like he’s been in a battle, not exploring a cavern. Have you ever heard of something that could do this to a man?” Clearly unnerved, Kiyoshi looked up and peered deeper into the tunnel, half expecting some hidden threat to reveal itself and charge at them. She took a deep breath and took a moment to find her resolve.

”We have to keep going. This just means we’re on the right path, and we have another body to find… Maybe we can collect this guy on the way back, and bring him back to his family.”

Sun would follow Kiyoshi, taking care to look behind himself every so often, just to make sure nothing took an interest in them. When they caught site of the dim lighting up ahead, he found his interest began getting piqued. When they came upon the mushrooms he slowed his pace. He saw Kiyoshi sniff the air, as if trying to detect something; poison. Normally he'd point out to her that if the fungi were giving off some kind of poisonous spores, they'd have been able to see them in the air. But at the moment his mind was occupied by dark splatters that seemed to mark both some of the mushrooms and the surfaces of the walls. "Hmm. It seems we're getting closer to our objective." He spoke mostly to himself, as if making a mental check off.

”Blood here, but dried. I’d guess it’s a few days old… which means this is probably the right path, assuming it’s human.” As Kiyoshi went about her investigation, Sun would approached a cluster of the luminescent mushrooms, and scrap them from the wall, placing them in one of the free pouches of his gear pouch. Samples were always a good thing. Who knows what he'd be able to learn from them, or the benefits they may bring.

After he'd finished, he turned just in time to see her dabbing the blood on her tongue. He stifled a shout, controlling hi outburst before continuing. "I don't recommend taste testing blood. Whether it was venom or poison that lie within it, all the use that method would do is at worst kill you to, and at best give you a bitter after taste. Though thankfully it seems to be the latter."

”Well, I didn’t see any other route we could’ve gone, and this is the best clue we could hope to find - nothing for it but to trust it’s the right one.” It did seem they were on the right path. He'd follow behind her, picking up a piece of clothe that was also covered with dried blood, and putting it in his pouch. Hopefully that to would provide some kind of insight into whatever roamed the Catacombs.

The first thing he noticed was the stench. When death comes to a person, they void their bowels in it's entirety. That was usually enough to off set most, but down here, in the narrow passages with limited air flow, the odor was multiplied. The body looked worst than it smelled, if that were possible. He looked to be ravaged and mauled, the sizable punctures marring his body clear, even through the burns. What could have done this? The wounds could've been due to either the spiders or the rats, their mandibles and teeth both being capable of such damage.

But then, where did the burns come from? Were one of them capable of expelling flames? Or was it the back draft from a Katon jutsu, unexpectedly turned on him? Maybe even it was a yet unseen creature, still roaming the tunnels further ahead. ”I don’t suppose you have any medical experience?” Sun shook his head solemnly.

”What happened here… You poor man.” "You may want to save your sorrows for till we are finished. We've still yet to find his team, the other team, and whatever did this to him." ”I was expecting to find a body or two, but this is beyond horrible. These burns, the puncture wounds… It looks like he’s been in a battle, not exploring a cavern. Have you ever heard of something that could do this to a man?” "I was just considering that. The wounds look like they could be either a spider or a rat. The burns... could have been the result of a Katon jutsu gone wrong, or maybe one of the creatures possess the ability to produce flames."

”We have to keep going. This just means we’re on the right path, and we have another body to find… Maybe we can collect this guy on the way back, and bring him back to his family.” He wanted to contradict this. That it would be a highly unlikely thing to happen, given the nature of the situation. Likely, his body would be eaten by a hungry predator, before they returned. Likely that the only memento his family would have is his forehead protector. But saying it wouldn't help either of them. Instead, he simply touched her shoulder, in an attempt to assure her, and took the lead, walking further into the darkness.

As the pair ventured deeper into the tunnel, the tunnel itself began to shake ever so slightly. During Wu's forward advance, his foot had caught a very nondescript pressure plate, causing the reaction. If either of the two were observant in their actions, they'd be able to see Wu's one foot dip ever so slightly into the floor.

Within seconds after the shaking began, the floor from side to side of the tunnel and stretching 15 feet forward opened up. Assuming either looked inside the newly formed pit, or feel into it, they'd find out the cause of the previous shinobi's death. The pit reached a good 30 feet down and at the bottom was a deadly spike trap, the spikes large enough to pierce holes through a grown man's body. The bioluminescent mushrooms growing within the tunnel also grow on the sides of the pit, providing enough light for them to see within its depths. Seconds after the ground opened up and they were able to get a good look, the walls of the pit would glow with ancient fuuinjutsu which released a torrent of flames across the expanse of the pit which would explain the burns covering the dead shinobi's body.

Now the pair knew the tunnel was lined with traps, each movement could now prove to be fatal.
