[Plotboard] What May Be Found

Sun had frozen in his step. He had felt the ever subtle dip of his foot, and paused out of instinct. Had floor not been made of rock and minerals and most likely a variety of other substances, each solid and hard, he might not have given it a second thought. But it was, and so he feared the worse. His free hand shot back to stop Kiyoshi, preventing her from coming any closer, while whispered as loud as he could, "Wait!

He felt the shaking of the tunnel, and briefly feared he'd triggered a cave-in, only to see the ground in front of them open up into a large pit. He went to the edge and peered over, seeing the spikes within the depths of it, while briefly making out the fuuinjutsu seals before they erupted into flames.

"Kiyoshi, I think I've found the cause of our comrades demise. This tunnel.... maybe even the entire Catcomb, is most likely a nest of ancient traps. His voice was low, shaky. Had they been in even a slight rush, one or both of them may have met the same fate as the dead shinobi. For the first time, it was there was a crack in Sun's curious spirit. Now, he was afraid.

"The other teams must have proceeded further down. I don't see any bodies up ahead, but that may mean nothing. If.... I mean when, we proceed, we should do so in caution." He carefully removed his foot from the pressure plate, and back tracked towards Kiyoshi, making sure to keep an eye on the trigger spot.

Following a short distance behind Sun, Kiyoshi caught the very slight unnatural shift in his footing as the pressure plate was triggered. Sun froze on the spot and raised an arm to stop her even as she opened her mouth to say the same to him; if she was a step or two closer, she'd have grabbed him and hauled him backwards to where they knew the tunnel was safe.
Luckily the trap was only ahead of them this time, and Sun appeared to be fine where he was standing. She watched with a sense of apprehension and dread as he stepped up to the edge and looked down, then she hesitantly followed. If something else happened, she wanted to be close enough to help.

"This is... incredible." She said, voice hushed as she followed Sun's gaze down into the pit. The scale of the trap, both in depth and in the size of the spikes at the bottom, would've been impressive even above ground. The extent and complexity of these catacombs just kept growing and growing; who couldn't thought all this existed down here, right below Iwagakure's feet? She jumped back a step as the ancient fuuinjutsu suddenly burst alight and gouts of intense flame erupted throughout the trap.

"I think you're right. The poor bastard barely made it out." When the flames died down, she held her burning torch high and tried to peer down into the pit again, but the light wasn't enough to see in detail. "Question is, was he the only one who did?" She set the torch aside and pulled a flare from her satchel, lit it, and tossed it down into the centre of the pit. Her aim was partly to illuminate the entire trap, and partly to see if there was any further trap waiting to be sprung if they tried to pass over the top of the pit. She watched carefully, looking to see if anything concerning happened to the flare as it flew over and into the trap, and if it revealed any hints of charred, impaled human remains at the bottom. Eventually she nodded in agreement with Sun. He was right; the rest of the team must have made it further, and so they had to go on.

Peering across the pit, Kiyoshi searched for the point where the tunnel continued, then collected her burning torch and tossed it high, aiming for it to land in the opposite tunnel and light it up. Then she'd take a kunai and tie it securely to the end of a length of rope, take aim, and hurl the roped weapon towards the centre of the ceiling above the trap, while holding the other end of the rope.

If the kunai lodged properly in the ceiling - which she'd test with a strong yank - they'd be able to use it to swing across the open pit to reach the lit tunnel on the other side. That would be faster than climbing the walls, and less draining than running across them, and the flare test would hopefully tell her if it was safe. They could tie the rope around themselves and hopefully, as the distance was only short, could avoid any loose ends of it - much less themselves - dipping down into the pit during the swing. Clearly the fuuinjutsu trap could activate multiple times, and she felt a strong tendency to not tempt it. If the rope swing failed, it wasn't far to throw the other end of the rope and try to catch the wall before one fell too far into the trap. Fifteen feet seemed far when looking down into the depths of the trap - but really it wasn't anything a decent ninja couldn't jump, and so she gave herself a good runup and mostly planned to use the rope as a backup lest she fell short.
Taking a deep breath, and sharing a look with Sun, she gripped the rope and began her swing...

Once Sun removed his foot from the pressure plate on the bottom of the tunnel, the flames sputtered out, and the fake floor tile quickly slid back out to cover up the trap. As long as neither of them stepped on the plate, the trap wouldn’t trigger and neither would risk becoming barbeque. The light from the flare tossed down into the trap before it re-armed itself showed nothing at the bottom, confirming for the duo that the rest of the previous team hadn’t been done in by this trap.

Kiyoshi’s convoluted way of crossing the trap area worked out as she swung through the air. Nothing strange occurred in the corridor and she was able to clear it easily. Sun now had a choice: clear it as she did or just book it across while avoiding the pressure plate. Once they passed the trap, the corridor would continue along as it had with the glowing mushrooms leading the way deeper into the earth. The corridor finally came to an ‘end’ as it split off into two different branches. Now the two chuunin had to make a choice, to go left or to go right.

While Kiyoshi's method of clearing the now-once-again hidden gap, Sun preferred to do it in a more reliable and stable manner; taking a few steps back in order to get a running start, he'd sprint forward, leaping to the side of the cavern and wall running across. Once he joined her on the other side, he gave a tentative nod, and held up his illuminated-tag, leading the way through the tunnel.

He was careful, and methodical in how he walked. Each step was measured and calculated, being light and brisk so as to not trigger anymore traps. As they walked and passed several colonies of mushrooms, he briefly wondered if the luminescence of them were due to some kind of biological evolution, or perhaps had to do with chakra. If it was the later, his mind could only imagine the results that extensive testing would yield.

"Hmm, a literal fork in the road. Sun slowed his pace as he approached the divide, using his tag to search for any apparent traps or trips. There wasn't anything that immediately jumped out to him, causing him to turn about on Kiyoshi. "Do you feel like something is... off? Smell? Stone out of place? Any signs of where the others might've gone? Your senses do seem to be a bit more honed than my own, admittedly."

Kiyoshi's traversal of the trap may have been a bit excessive once it'd closed itself, but she was damned if she was going to become another burned, impaled corpse through a lack of care, and so proceeded to swing across where the gap had been anyway. Sun's approach was more practical, perhaps, but also a little more risky. If this part of the catacombs were designed with such complex traps, there was no knowing what other mechanisms could be hidden.

Once they were both safely across and into the next part of the tunnel, she fell in behind Sun and followed his footsteps as precisely as she could. While he watched the ground ahead of them, she used the opportunity to examine the rest of the tunnel in search of further clues. At the end of the corridor, she carefully approached the entrance to each fork and tried to peer in, as well as sniffing the air and searching for any sign of tracks as Sun suggested.

After a minute or two of examining the fork, she sighed and shook her head. "No, nothing." she continued to look, but unless some evidence become apparent, she'd turn back to Sun. "I'm afraid of what we'll find if we take a wrong turn, but we can't afford to not be thorough. If you were part of the first team to have come this way - I suppose we don't know whether our friend back there was killed on their way in, or his way back out - what would you have done?" She tapped a finger against her lips thoughtfully for a moment before concluding: "We have to search both. At least until we find a reason to focus on one. But splitting up would naturally be a terrible idea. Do you know any clone techniques?"

She began one then, forming a steady stream of hand seals and stoking her chakra, shaping it and forming the technique. Nearby, moisture pulled from the air coalesced into a shapeless mass of water before falling to the ground and twisting into the shape of another Kiyoshi. Once formed, the real Kiyoshi would hand over a kunai and a flash tag to the clone, and instruct it.

"Take the opposite fork to us, and scout it carefully. Expect any manner of traps, and maybe gigantic - almost surely hostile - local species. Do not engage anything unless it attacks first and fighting is your only way to escape and warn us. You're looking for any trace of humans, specifically trained shinobi. Any trace at all. Blood, footprints, smells, scraps of clothing or scuff marks, signs of fighting, et cetera. If you find anything, if the fork ends, or if you see nothing suspicious at all for a good distance, I want you to double back and find us down the other fork. If it seems safe to do so, mark your route on the wall with the kunai as you go. We'll do the same."

With that, and unless Sun objected, she'd move to the right-hand tunnel with Sun and begin to carefully move forward, watching the way ahead and the path by her feet for signs of their quarry and traps both. Meanwhile, the clone entered the left fork to do as instructed.

The clone heading down the left section of the fork would find nothing too out of place. The bioluminesent mushrooms were scattered everywhere within the tunnel but upon the end of the path there'd still be nothing. Once it turned around and began its walk back, however, something had been tripped. The tunnel seemed to rumble for a moment before the roof of the tunnel pulled back and a gigantic spider, very likely a member of the colony within the cliff, was dropped from it. It crashed into the floor and laid there, not moving.

It was dead. Whoever had left it there had left it there far too long and it had starved to death.

Kiyoshi and Sun's trip down the right side of the path was...different. For the first 200 feet of the tunnel, nothing was amiss. Within an instant that changed as the duo passed a clumping of mushrooms which had been booby trapped to react to chakra. The mushrooms shown brightly, bright enough to blind them, before dimming down and then the tunnel began to rumble. The origin of the vibrations was behind them and upon looking back, they'd be able to see a giant boulder rolling and taking up the entirety of the tunnels width and height while barreling down on them.

Sun would notice the mushrooms seem to react to their passing, and would delay for a moment, inspecting them. "What- ARRGHHH!" He would shout in shock and temporary pain as his vision turned stark white, his curiosity having worked against him for the nth time in his life. Rubbing the white spots from his eyes, he felt the vibrations of the tunnel, and feared the worse.

"Kiyoshi, what is that? My eyes are still readjusting-Oh." Looking behind them, he saw the boulder incoming the sheer size and speed of the trap dissuading him from wasting time attempting any sort of jutsu. Instead, only one option came to mind.

"Run!" He grabbed her arm and pulled her with him as he sprinted forward, heading further down the tunnel.

Down the left fork, Kiyoshi's clone made its careful way to the end and, finding no route leading deeper, turned back. It leapt backwards in surprise, raising its kunai defensively, as the giant spider fell from the open ceiling. Then it waited, alert and cautious, until it realised a short while later that the creature was dead. The clone was unable to tear its eyes away from the monstrosity as it carefully stepped around the lifeless corpse until it was back on the other side. After that, it followed its orders in re-tracing its steps back to the fork, then turned down the right-hand route with the intention of meeting up with the real Kiyoshi and Sun further ahead. The flash of light and rumbling further down the tunnel started a moment later, and the clone began running to investigate from the other side of the trap...

The real Kiyoshi was following Sun when the mushrooms burst into blinding radiance. Being behind Sun, she caught up to him as he stopped the examine the mushrooms, and was just as close to the trap as it erupted into the sudden burst of light. She let out a cry as she spun away and tried to shield her face and eyes with her arms to little avail. The eruption of light had come on too quickly for her to block, though, and when the light dimmed her vision remained dark.

"Sun, I'm bl--" She began speaking at the same time as Sun before the rumbling cut her off, quickly growing louder and shaking the tunnel around them. Disorientated and blind, she began turning around in a vain attempt to locate the source of the noise as Sun grabbed her and hauled her away. She stumbled and almost fell from the sudden movement, but latched onto his arm for support and, trusting to him to guide them, began running along with him as best she could.

Her mind worked as her feet pounded away, and she realised quickly that the noise was following them; whatever it was wasn't far behind.
"We can't keep running blindly! she called to Sun over the noise, "two traps means there's probably even more ahead!"
She fumbled around in her pockets, remembering where she kept her explosive tags and searching by touch until she found one. Dropping it to the ground as they ran, she waited until she estimated that the source of the noise was close to the tag before forming a seal and detonating it behind them, praying that the blast would stop whatever it was bearing down on them... Hopefully without destroying their only escape route.

The rolling boulder continued to roll and gain speed as he chased the duo down the tunnel. The exploding tag left behind by Kiyoshi was a smart idea and would kill the momentum of most objects but the blast did nothing to the boulder. Instead, it seemed to speed up even more and was nipping at their heels before finally coming right upon them and...rolling through them. The boulder was now 'faster' then them and it continued on past them down the tunnel, neither of the two actually hurt by it.

The boulder had, in actuality, been apart of a Warp genjutsu stored within a fuuinjutsu. They had tripped another wire which had released the genjutsu, the bright flash of light from the mushrooms having been the trigger. The duo would probably be recovering from their perceived near-death experience while Kiyoshi's clone continued to catch up to them.

There was still more of the tunnel to explore.

Sun would feel the rumble of the exploding tag that Kiyori threw, looking back in some vain hope that she'd succeeded in at least slowing the pursuit of the bolder. When he saw it did nothing, he felt his spirits come crashing down. There was no time to perform the hand signs necessary for any useful jutsu, and the tags he carried were mostly blanks; to be used as needed in the situation. This was it, this was there end. And it was his fault.

Mostly by instinct, he pulled Kiyori to the front and shoved her forward, while he stood in his spot, in some doomed attempt to slow down, or if he was extremely lucky, hold back the boulder, just enough her to escape. He glanced back at her, before shutting his eyes, and waiting for the impact....

......

After the first few moments, Sun realized he was still alive, and unscratched. Opening his eyes slowly, he glance forward, before looking behind, and seeing the boulder fade away as its distance from them grew. Falling to his knees, Sun clutched his chest , exhaling and inhaling heavily. "I.... We're alive. We should be dead.... and it was my fault." He remained there for a few moments, trying to catch his breathe, and failing.

"Kiyori.. I'm.... I'm sorry."

Kiyoshi's robes billowed from the blast behind them as the tag detonated and she risked a glance backwards, then gritted her teeth and redoubled her pace as the boulder kept coming despite her efforts. In a moment it was closing in on them, and panic rose inside her. They couldn't escape. There was nowhere to hide. Nothing to d—

"Agh!" She felt herself pulled off balance and shoved forward, skidding and trying desperately to keep her footing. "Sun! No!" She twisted and reached a hand back to grab him, but at that moment the boulder hit... And passed through the pair of them harmlessly. She still seized a handful of Sun's clothing as they stumbled to a halt, panting heavily and eyes wide.

"What the..." She sank down to her haunches next to him, sucking in breath and still gripping his shirt with white knuckles. She turned to look ahead, watching the boulder continue on down the tunnel. It was... an illusion? But she could still feel it shaking the ground and hear it's roar as it rolled away. And just like that, her terror turned to relief and she fell to her ass beside Sun, threw her head back, and laughed.

It took a good few seconds for her to recover. The panic and fear giving way to incredulity and relief fuelled her giggling, as did Sun's earnest apology. She shoved him lightly as she stood up again, still smiling.

"Don't be stupid. We're fine, and it wasn't your fault.

More importantly... How far did we run?"
She glanced around, taking in their surroundings for the first time since the blinding flash of light earlier. They were still in the same tunnel, it seemed, but it stretched away behind them further than she could see. Had they missed anything important? She was considering backtracking to make sure—the last thing they wanted was to lose their route back, if they'd passed a junction without realising—when her clone came into view, running to catch up. If it had found them so quickly, the path behind was likely shorter or more direct than she'd assumed.

"Well then.. Are you ready to keep going?" She paused for a moment to make sure Sun had gotten back to his feet and was ready, then once again began walking down the tunnel, deeper into the Catacombs ahead. This time, she sent the clone on several metres ahead, and made sure to search for any further signs of traps...
