Juro rolled his shoulders forward and back for a few minutes as he prepared himself for another day of training. The Jinrai Castle had a rather large training room, and it was highly convenient, especially for days where the weather was bad or it was particularly cold. Juro had spent many hours in the room, both alone and with other members of the family. Fortunately, that day the room was empty, which was good. Juro had actually been waiting for the room to be entirely empty before beginning his training because he didn’t want anyone to see him working on such basic techniques. Low ranked Ninpou techniques, he thought, should have been learned when he was a Genin.

As he finished stretching, Juro prepared the jutsu. Looking down at the scroll he had placed in front of him, he began to walk through the hand seals. After completing the lot of them, he stretched out his arms, opening both his palms. He concentrated on forming his chakra just in front of his hands as the jutsu required. He took a deep breath before beginning to shape his chakra. It suddenly became visible, stretching out in an odd, blotchy shape. Juro wasn’t certain what shape the shield was supposed to take, and he looked down at the scroll. In doing so, he lost concentration, and the oddly shaped barrier shattered.

Sighing at himself, he walked over to the scroll and picked it up. He read it carefully before placing it on the ground again. Now well aware of the shape the jutsu should take, he went through the hand seals again, faster this time. After completing them, he threw his arms out in front of him, focusing his chakra just like before. Only this time, he tried to mold his chakra to take the shape of a rectangular shield. It took him a few seconds, but the barrier began to take shape. Beginning at a single point before spreading out evenly, the barrier began to take shape. The time it took to expand was less than a few seconds, but it felt much longer to Juro who was deep in concentration. It extended until the barrier was about three meters in length and height.

Juro smiled to himself as he dropped his arms. The barrier remained for a moment before slowly fading. Juro always knew he was a quick learner. Of course it was a basic technique. Maybe this time, he thought to himself, he would try it with only one hand…

“Ugh!” Juro grunted as he placed another bale of hay on top of the last one. It definitely was thankless and boring work; stacking bales of hay to serve as dummies for his jutsu practice. More than that, it appeared to be an exercise in futility. Whether or not the jutsu was successful, the end result was always that Juro had to stack more bales of hay. He had created his fortified opponent nearly a dozen times already; he was quite lucky, actually, that the bales remained together, otherwise it would have been a huge mess more irritating that simply putting a stack back together.

Having completed his task, he prepared again to practice his new jutsu. He had spent a few hours already, working to perfect it. The technique allowed the user to create additional concussive force in any of their strikes, something that had an obvious and extremely valuable use in close combat. However, Juro had been attempting to meld the jutsu with his staff-flute. He relied pretty heavily on his staff in close combat, and it would be more valuable to add the force on top of his Gabuki than just his fists or feet.

He walked back over to his normal position, and bent over to pick up his staff. Returning to his full height, he eyed his enemy, a stack of hay three bales tall and four bales wide. It was a rather impressive size; Juro wasn’t exactly sure where it had all come from, but he was thankful it was there for his use. He held his staff out to the side, and, without performing a single hand seal, he began focusing his chakra in his Gabuki. After a few deep breaths, and a few seconds of concentration, his staff began to glow slightly, a very light, almost entirely clear blue. With his chakra having coated the entirety of the staff, it was time to see if the jutsu would work.

Juro pulled the staff back before swiftly and sharply slamming his staff into his target. As soon as the staff-flute contacted the first bale, a minor explosion tore them apart. Several bales from the far side of the stack flew across the room and hit the wall, still in bale form. Those closer to the staff were completely destroyed, however, leaving individual straws of hay strewn across the floor. It was a big mess. Luckily, Juro thought, he had servants who could clean it up.

“Hmmmm..” Juro hummed as he thought to himself. He continued on his route, walking across the small living room to the table that sat just above the ground, in the center of a seating area. Juro paused, concentrating for just a moment. Confidently, he took a few more steps towards the table. Just as he reached the table, he heard a distinct giggle. “Yudai!” Juro shouted, a little angrily. As he did, he could hear full on laughter take over.

A young child rolled out from beneath the table, laughing with a big smile across his face. Juro couldn’t help but smirk as the child rose to his feet, hunching over in laughter. Juro rolled his eyes and sighed, still with his own smile.

“Yudai, you’re supposed to be hiding, quietly!” he said, raising his hands. The little Yudai just shook his head and shrugged. Yudai was one of Juro’s cousins. He was actually from one of the Jinrai families farthest removed from Juro’s immediate family, but he and Yudai had become close. Yudai’s mother as well had spent a lot of time watching Juro as a child, and now he watched Yudai.

“It’s not that easy, Juro!” the child said between laughs. “Look, why don’t you hide, and then I’ll see-”

“Yu!” Juro calmed himself with another smirk. “We’re supposed to be training, remember? I need you to concentrate okay, buddy?” Yudai looked to the side, thinking for a moment before nodding in the affirmative. “Alright, good,” Juro said before taking a step back. He quickly plucked out one of his hairs before beginning a set of hand seals. Having completed them, he placed the hair in his hands. A dim blue light flared for only a second before returning to nothing.

“Here, Juro said, placing the hair on his cousins shoulder. “Now, go hide again.” With that Yudai was off, running back into the hallway and then down a set of stairs. Juro turned away and took a deep breath, slowly counting in his head. When he reached fifty, he turned back around. Focusing on his chakra, he followed Yudai’s path, heading down the stairs. As he did he could feel the tug of the jutsu. It was faint, but it was definitely there. It was a feeling that, if it were far stronger, would be irritating. But its dull pull wasn’t terrible; it was just comfortable. As he passed a doorway, he felt the pull getting a bit stronger. He turned to see Yudai, hiding poorly behind the doorway.

“Found ya again!”

Juro couldn’t believe he was doing it again. Back in the large practice room within the Jinrai family’s castle, the ninja once again was piling bales of hay to act as targets for his jutsu practice. He was surprised there were this many left, but for whatever reason after his last session, the bales had been restocked. Whomever had set that up was just asking for Juro to make another mess, and he had every intention of obliging.

As he placed the final bale of hay atop the pile, Juro began preparing for the jutsu. He had already memorized the hand seals; in fact, this was the third time he was trying it. Luckily, if the jutsu was not completely effective, the bales generally tended to stay together, making restacking them easier. The jutsu itself was known as Chakra Burst. It allowed the user to infuse their hands with chakra, creating explosive force with each strike. Juro had already mastered a variant of this technique for his staff, but he figured it might be valuable to give his hands the ability as well, in the event he misplaces his weapon during battle.

Juro quickly went through the memorized hand seals. As he completed them, he held his arms out at his elbows, keeping them about shoulder width apart. He began to focus his chakra into his hands, and they glowed blue with power. After taking a few deep breaths, he was satisfied with the amount of chakra he had collected. He pulled his arm back before striking forward, slamming his fist into the pile of hay. As his fist made contact, the chakra rushed forward, providing additional concussive force that sent the bales of hay flying backwards. The one his fist made contact with burst into individual straws that filled the room, slowly floating down.

Juro smiled at his success, but his open mouth allowed a straw of hay to intrude. He quickly spat, trying to remove the hay from his mouth, but it took a few tries. When he turned back around he could see how messy the room really had become. He felt bad for the servants who would have to clean it up, but he kept reminding himself that was what the servants get paid to do. Having sufficiently perfected the jutsu, Juro decided that was enough for the moment. He collecting his things which had been kept in the far corner of the room, brushed the hay from off them, and headed back to his own quarters.

Juro stuggled to catch his breath. He was a bit embarrassed at the difficulty he was having. The jutsu, known as the wind bullet, was an extremely basic technique. All Jinrai had Fuuton chakra nature, and most of the ones who became shinobi were capable of manifesting wind style jutsu. However, Juro had been practicing for several hours already on an extremely basic jutsu, with no results. Well, he was out of breath, which was to be expected when failing to produce enough wind chakra for the jutsu. Juro was outraged. He was possibly the most powerful Jinrai in the village! And yet, he was incapable of producing the most basic wind jutsu. That was unacceptable, and humiliating! He couldn’t let it stand.

Juro wiped the sweat from his forehead, and prepared the jutsu once again. He went through the hand seals quickly, as he had managed to memorize them over the past few hours, before holding the las one. Concentrating his chakra in his mouth, he focused all his remaining energy on converting the chakra into wind. He spent a few seconds collecting and then converting the chakra, remaining completely focused. He was concentrating so hard he didn’t notice the beads of sweat running down his back. All he was thinking about was wind; the feel of it on his face, the cold of evaporating sweat, the sharpness of the winter breeze. He closed his eyes and pictured it, pictured what it would look like if he were releasing the winds himself.

Convinced he had converted his chakra into wind, he opened his eyes. Targeting the far wall, he released the chakra all at once. A blast of wind, roughly a foot in diameter, rushed forth from his mouth, as if it were his own breath. It traveled a bit slowly, but crashed into the wall with significant force, spreading along the wooden panels as it did, dispersing into the rest of the air that filled the room.

Juro was relieved. He immediately dropped to the ground, lying flat on his back. Beads of sweat dripped down the side of his face, landing on the ground beside him. He continued to take deep breaths; he had heard first time wind jutsu users were often out of breath. He would have to work on that a bit more before he began using the techniques in battle. Nevertheless, his victory today validated him as a Jinrai and as a ninja.

Juro was confident; this practice was going to be far easier than his last one. Now that he had used Fuuton jutsu before, he would be able to learn another, hopefully more easily. It shouldn’t be that difficult; he was a high ranking ninja, and was also relatively good at learning jutsu. Nonetheless, the wounds from his last attempts at wind jutsu were still fresh; he had spent a total of six hours working to produce wind chakra.

This technique was also particularly easy. The Vortex Screw as only a low ranking technique; Juro himself knew Genin who were capable for producing a good Vortez Screw. He had thought about asking someone to help him with his wind jutsu, but the truth was, he needed to reach a higher level of proficiency in the wind style before he felt comfortable revealing his true skill in Fuuton to another to ask them for help.

The Vortex Screw as a simple technique. It was made to extend the range of the user’s attack, as well as empower their projectile with wind chakra. It was also relatively easy to manifest; all the user had to do was focus their chakra around a projectile, and then throw it. Should be easy enough.

Juro had already memorized the hand seals after studying a scroll a few hours before. He went through the hand seals, before pulling a shuriken out from the back of his pouch. He focused his wind chakra around the weapon, and he could feel it as it was added to the weapon; it felt like a rush of air, pushing his hand in all directions. He held the shuriken for a moment, getting a feel for the weapon covered in wind. Feeling comfortable with the shuriken, he turned towards the far wall. Taking a step forward, he swung his arm around, releasing the shuriken.

The weapon crashed into the wall. As it did, the air rushed forward, brushing against the wall before quickly dispersing. It left the shuriken, sticking out of the wall. Juro was so excited about how easy the jutsu was, he wasn’t at all worried about any punishment he might receive for damaging the wall of the Jinrai’s practice room. The jutsu wasn’t quite perfect, but a few more tries and he would have mastered the technique. Juro was relieved once more. He had been worried that every time he needed to learn a Fuuton jutsu, it would be as difficult as the first time. Fortunately, that wasn’t true.

This doesn't make the projectile any faster, only increases its range and ability to cut.

Juro wiped a bead of sweat from off his face. He had been working on his next Fuuton jutsu for nearly an hour, and he was having more trouble than his last training. Perhaps that was because this jutsu was supposed to me more complicated, but it was still far beneath his skill level. He was disappointed that his previous success with wind jutsu appeared to be only for lower leveled techniques, ones that children would learn.

This technique was to be much more useful as well. The Gale Blade technique harnessed wind chakra to create or enhance a blade onto any weapon. It would extend the weapon’s reach as well as provide extra cutting ability. It was a relatively simple jutsu to learn, but extremely valuable.

Placing his staff-flute on the ground at his feet, Juro began with the hand seals. After completing them, he used his foot to kick his staff into the air. As he caught it in his hand, he began to channel his chakra through it, forcing it out through the front end. At the front of the staff, wind gathered to create a blade. It extended nearly a meter outwards before holding, vacillating for a moment before choosing its shape and remaining sturdy.

Juro took a deep breath. He had gotten to this point before with this jutsu, but as soon as he began to strike, the wind dispersed. He reminded himself to remain focused on maintaining the shape of the blade. He swung his staff around so that the blade faced forward. With both hands on his weapon his struck forward, jabbing his staff outwards by extending his arms. As he did, he carefully watched the blade. It maintained its form, even as Juro swung his staff back around, spinning it in the air before placing it beneath his arm. He turned left and right, bringing his staff close to his torso as he swung about. Throughout every motion, the blade remained in its shape. Convinced of his success, he ended the jutsu before leaning his staff against the ground.

“Juro!” Juro turned to see the door to the practice room open, and the young Yudai standing in the doorway. Juro smiled as he wiped some sweat away from his eyes.

“What is it, buddy?” he asked while catching his breath.

“Dinner’s ready. You’re late!” Juro chuckled quietly before nodding.

“Alright, I’m on my way…”
