[Solo] Flight of Fancy

Post by apalooka » Tue Jun 27, 2017 11:07 am

It was another normal day in Kumogakure. While the sun was shining, a heavy mist had settled over the town, seeping through all the different sectors of the village. Most people were still out and about, not letting a little fog interrupt their daily routines.

Within the deepest part of the of the city stood the Heart of Kumogakure where ninjas were coming and going, reporting completed assignments or heading out in new ones. Ryudo Saionji was one such ninja, and although he currently couldn't leave the village on missions, he still liked coming down here to catch up with events and to talk to his friends. Today, as he was leaving, Saionji had run into one of the ninja in charge of Kumo’s rookery. A short conversation later, and Saionji was heading home with a small scroll tucked away in his vest.

When he arrived back at the family mansion, Saionji headed straight into the library, where he knew his younger brother would be hidden away. The mop of white hair peeking over the top of one of the many overstuffed chairs in the room, confirmed it.

Ever since he had become a Genin, Nasu had spent almost all his free time hidden within the dimly lit room. It hadn't been a big deal, until his reading had started interfering with training. Saionji had tried everything to get his brother to start participating in training, but Nasu didn't seem interested. He just wanted to read.

The youngest Ryudo was startled from his scroll by a small one dropping onto his lap from above. He would deny the yelp that escaped him as he started at the sudden item plopping into his lap. Nasu looked up above him to see his brother staring down from behind the chair. Dumb grin spread across his face.

“What are you doing? What was that for?”

Saionji snorted a laugh, scratching at the skin beneath his ruined eye, and leaning on the back of Nasu’s chair.

“You've been cooped up in here for days, little bro. You barely show up for training with me anymore. You need something to do. And as luck has it, I found a mission perfect for you.”

Nasu’s brow furrowed at the mention of a mission. He rolled up the scroll he had been reading and picked up the small one Saionji had dropped on him. It was a simple thing, covered with a gray paper wrap and sealed with the symbol of Kumogakure. He slid his finger beneath the wax seal and unrolled the scroll. His eyes ran down the paper, scanning the small print. Apparently someone had left the door to the rookery open and several of the eagles had gotten out. They wanted a Genin to go and round up the few ones that were still missing. Nasu looked up, giving the paper a small shake, and raised an eyebrow in question at his brother.

“What makes you think I want to do this? I didn’t let the birds out. Pass.”

He was about to set the scroll aside and go back to reading, but Saionji grabbed his wrist and pulled it back.

“I told you, you’ve been cooped up too long, Nasu. You need to get out. Since you pretty much refuse to join with another team--”

“None of the other teams’ll take me.”

“--and since you are refusing to come to morning training--”

“You have more important things to do than babysitting me.”

“--you need to do something to hone your skills. You like the eagles in the rookery, just go out and find them. Gain some experience. The sooner you get these small missions out of the way, the sooner you can go on bigger missions outside the village and become stronger. And the stronger you get, the better your chances are of getting the Herons to answer your summons.”

Nasu let out a grumble, pulling his wrist free from Saionji’s grip. He didn’t want to be a burden to his brother, and the faster he could leave the village, the better for him. So he guessed it wouldn’t be too much trouble to go and find the missing birds. Especially if it made him more appealing to make a contract with the Great Herons.

“How ‘bout this?”

Nasu looked up at Saionji who was digging around in his vest pockets. He pulled out a white scroll, sealed with silver wax in the shape of the Ryudo Family crest. Nasu blinked at the scroll, fighting the urge to snatch it from his brother’s hands. Not that he could, Saionji was a Jounin.

“You do this mission, and get the birds back before the deadline, and I’ll give you Midorisagi’s scroll. You won’t be able to use it until you establish a contract with him, but it might make him finally listen to you. Better than using random scrolls you take from the libra--”

“I’ll do it.”

Nasu had whirled around to sit on his knees and was reaching over the back of the chair, straining for the scroll Saionji held out of his reach. The older man let out a chuckle and tucked the white scroll back into his vest.

“You get it after you finish. So you best report to the rookery and let them know you’re accepting the request.”

Nasu hopped up to his feet and, unnecessarily, jumped over the back of the chair. He grabbed his forehead protector from the side table as he ran out of the family house, tying it his hair out of his face as he ran towards the Village. The run didn’t take too long, though he did have to dodge out of the way of several civilians. It was noon, and the streets were clogged with people moving about. He ran through the village, passing by the different districts, until he finally made it out to the Watchtowers.

The open spaces surrounding the towers built into the walls of the mountain always was an amazing sight. Standing on one of the bridges connecting the towers and looking over made one feel like they were flying. It was Nasu’s favorite feeling in the world. Even with that though, Nasu hadn’t been here since the one field trip with the Academy. Too caught up in his reading. Huffing in displeasure at the fact that Saionji was right about him spending too much time at home. Of course.

He shook his head, tightened his scarf, and jogged towards the main Watchtower, which also housed the rookery. The moment he entered the building, which was built into the side of the tower, he was greeted with the overwhelming musty smell of birds. So. Many. Birds. Nasu loved birds, but this was so much more than he had ever faced before. At him entering, several of the larger eagles began screeching at the new person. Nasu covered his ears at the cacophony and walked through the rookery to the door on the opposite side.

Past the door was a small room that housed the on duty Bird Master. They would be the one whom Nasu would get the details of his mission from. Today’s Bird Master was an intimidating looking man. He had a large hooked nose that reminded Nasu of the eagles the man watched over. It took a lot of self control not to chuckle at that thought, Nasu was proud of himself for keeping it in. The older ninja hadn’t seemed to notice that Nasu had entered, or maybe he was just ignoring him.

“Um, hello?”

Nasu caught the Bird Master’s attention and got a rough grunt in response. Right.

“I was told some of your birds were missing? I’m here to help get them back.”

The man looked up from whatever he was writing and stood from the desk. Geez, the guy was tall. Like super tall. Why was everyone so tall??? Nasu stared up, the other ninja stared down. They stood there for a moment, just staring at each other. Nasu wasn’t sure whether or not he should say something, when the older ninja walked over to a series of maps on the wall. There was one the showed all of the five countries, but there was also a smaller one the was a detailed map of Kumo.

“We’ve gotten word that the eagles have been sighted all over the Village,” the Bird Master said, pointing to several places on the map. “They won’t leave the boundaries of the village until they have a set destination, but we’re worried that they could get into some type of trouble, or get hurt.

“There’re ten eagles still missing. We would like to have them back before nightfall. Less of a chance of them getting in trouble if they’re home before then. I’ll give you some gloves and a cage so you can bring them back, but the cage only holds three birds at a time. You’ll have to make a few trips. Once you get them back, just open the cage and they’ll go back to their nests. Just keep the door shut, we don’t need them getting out again.”

Nasu nodded and turned back to face the older man, as he moved about the office again grabbing some spare gloves from a cabinet and moving over towards rows of large cages.

“What’re their names?”

“What?”

“The birds. What are their names? Won’t they come if they hear their names?”

The man grunted as he grabbed a cage from rows, bringing it back over to the Genin. There seemed to several clasps on the cage that Nasu would be able to attach to his belt so he could wear the massive cage on his back.

As the Bird Master helped Nasu attach the cage onto his back, he listed off the names of all ten birds. The common brown messengers were called Hibou, Aman, Ari, Au, Suki, Lilli, Aiah, Kira, and Nao. And the one white eagle, the one used for important messages from the Kage, was named Fujian.

Once he was loaded up with the large bird cage, which as almost as tall as he was, and he had the thick leather gloves tucked away in his belt, Nasu nodded his thanks to the Bird Master and headed out to try and find his quarry. The first place he’d begin looking, as he decided earlier would be right here, at the Watchtowers. Eagles: 0 | WC: 1700

Of course, he had no idea where to begin looking. The open area around the Towers was massive. Kumo was massive. How was one Genin supposed to locate 10 tiny birds within the city all by himself, before nightfall? Maybe he should have asked for help from some other Genin...well, now he was understanding why Saionji kept getting on him to join up with a team. Nasu huffed as he walked over towards one of the taller towers.

He climbed up the tower, walking perpendicular up the wall. Once at the top, he looked out over the park. He didn’t really expect to see anything, the eagles coloring was meant to blend into their surroundings. But, luck was on his side today.

There off in the distance was a gray-brown mass of feathers. It was tucked into a niche on one of the other towers, out of view of anyone on the ground level. Nasu smiled to himself and quickly jumped down from his tower and rushed over to the other building. Two puffy, gray-brown eagles were cuddled up together. One raised its head as Nasu approached and let out a screech, not liking the unknown ninja getting close.

Nasu had no idea which birds these were. Out of the nine names he had for the normal messengers, there was no way of telling who these two were. He knew they were messengers though, thanks to the small bands around the awake one’s foot. Nasu pulled out the leather gloves and slipped them on. They were much too big, but they’d protect his arms from angry talons. Of course, now he had to figure a way to convince the birds to come to him. The awake one didn’t seem to like him at all. He slid his belt off and set the large cage off to the side on the ledge he was perched on.

Now, Nasu had seen his older brother receive messages from the eagles before, and one thing he remembered was when one bird had landed on the wall surrounding the mansion instead of coming directly to Saionji. Saionji had lifted his arm up and made a loud whistling noise. The eagle had chirped and flown directly over to the jounin. So Nasu decided to give that a try.

He held his arm out and gave a shrill whistle. The sleeping eagle woke up with an annoyed chirp and stared at Nasu. The other eagle just screeched. He gave another whistle and the previously sleeping eagle stood up, knocking its partner aside and hopped over. It gave a flap and landed on Nasu’s outstretched arm, nibbling the leather glove. Nasu chuckled and brushed a hand down the smooth feathers of the eagle’s back.

“Good bird. Good girl.”

Nasu twisted around towards the cage, careful not to jostle the bird and placed it inside. She hopped off his arm easily enough and settled for the ride. Now, for the other bird. Who apparently hated Nasu at first sight. First two birds and already trouble. Joy.

As he turned back to the eagle, he was greeted with another screech. This eagle did not want to cooperate. Not even another whistle would get it to come. It did draw the attention of the eagle in the cage, giving a friendly chirp. Nasu was probably going to have to do this the hard way, but he couldn’t hurt the bird. And there was no way to know if the bird was going to just fly off once he got close. Well...there was one thing he could attempt. The ledge the eagle was on was big enough that he didn’t have to worry about it falling off. So Nasu unwrapped his scarf from around his neck and flattened it out. It was a decent width, so it should work. He hoped that he wouldn’t screw up, the eagle definitely wouldn’t stick around if he did.

Pulling his arm back, Nasu threw the scarf towards the eagle. It screeched and ducked down, but didn’t try to escape. The scarf settled over it and Nasu sprang forward, wrapping his hands around the covered eagle.

It was pissed.

Luckily, the scarf kept the eagle from flapping its wings and battering Nasu, but it did nothing to muffle the ear-splitting screeches that it was letting out. Anyone out and about would probably think he was murdering the bird. Nasu winced at the noise, twisting around so he could head back over to the cage. The friendly eagle was hopping around the bottom of that cage, curious about the noise. He tucked the screaming eagle snugly underneath his arm, getting a beak to the side for his trouble. Luckily the scarf and his clothing prevented it from doing much damage. He opened the cage and quickly stuffed the bird inside, pulling his scarf out at the same time he swung the cage shut.

The eagle hissed and flared its wings at the young shinobi, but after a moment settled in next to the other eagle. Well, two down. Easy peasy.

Nasu slipped the belt back on his shoulder and stood up. He felt a sharp stab in his back as one of the eagles pecked at him. If the others were like this demon, he was going to quit this mission. Heron scroll be damned. He wrapped his scarf back around his neck and began a descent from the building. He didn’t want to jostle the birds, so he had to climb down the hard way, instead of walking down the side of the building. Luckily, there were plenty of handholds on the Kage building, so he made it down with relative ease.

He quickly brought the eagles back to the rookery. Once inside, with the door shut, Nasu opened the cage. The two eagles flew out, the evil one giving off one last screech, before returning to their roosts. Nasu let out a sigh and left the rookery and the eagles behind. Eight more to go.

He continued scouting around the Heart, but unfortunately, none of the other eagles seemed to want to stay within the park. He guessed that meant that he’d have to go search other areas. Where to next? Maybe the Academy? He had to start somewhere and at least he’d know his way around the area if he went to the Academy. So off he headed. Eagles: 2 | WC: 2754

Nasu hadn’t been back to the Academy since he had graduated. He had learned a lot when he had been attending. Even when the tragedy had struck the Ryudo family, no one had treated him differently at the Academy. As Nasu stepped back onto the grounds, he felt something lift inside him. He really did like it here. Now he needed to see if he could find an eagle. Or two, hopefully two. Was three hoping for too much?

“Nacchan? It is you! Long time no see!”

Nasu turned towards the voice and saw the Sensei that had taught him while he attended the Academy. She had her long brown hair tied up into a bun and her arms were ladened with scrolls. Nasu rubbed the back of his neck and felt himself flush. He hadn’t expected to run into anyone he knew here.

“Hi Sensei. Yeah, it’s been a while. Nice to see you.”

His former sensei gave a big smile and hurried over to her former student. She shifted her armful of scrolls so she could free one of her hands. Reaching out and ruffling Nasu’s hair, causing the Genin to duck away in embarrassment.

“You haven’t even come to visit us here. We have a bunch of new students who would love to meet you.”

Nasu chuckled at the thought. Him? Talking to new students? Yeah, right.

“So, what brings you back to the Academy? On a mission? We were looking for some people to assist in teaching the students.”

Nasu shook his head. “I’m not here to teach, I’m actually looking for some eagles that got out of the rookery. Have you seen any, Sensei?”

The woman brought her finger up to her mouth in thought, humming slightly as she did so.

“Well, we’ve seen the normal amount coming and going, but I can’t think of any that have stuck around. But I’ve also been inside most of the day, so I’m not the best to ask. You’re free to look around if you’d like though. No one’d mind and it’d give something for the students to watch. Let them see a real shinobi in action.”

Nasu flushed again, but thanked his sensei for the compliment. He told her that he would look around outside if it was really all right. She nodded her agreement again before reshuffling her scrolls and heading back into the building. Nasu looked around for a good vantage point where he could search for the eagles. There was a balcony overlooking the courtyard, that would work for him.

Climbing the building wasn’t hard, just as before. He scanned the area, hoping for a glimpse of a bird. But there wasn’t anything. Not in his line of sight anyway. Perhaps if he got higher? He hopped off the balcony and climbed up to the roof. Looking around the grounds, he didn’t see anything. He was about to give up when a strange noise, like a warble, caught his attention. He whirled around and saw a fluffy eagle perches on the roof, staring at him with gold eyes. The band around its ankle confirmed it was one of the missing messengers. It wasn’t trying to scare him away with screeches and puffing up its wings. It was just staring and tilting its head. Nasu smiled at it and held out an arm after placing the leather glove on. With a whistle, the bird chirped and flapped over to Nasu. He removed the cage from his back and set the bird inside. It didn’t even complain, just settled down and chirped cheerfully.

Nasu continued to look everywhere within the grounds of the Academy. But he wasn’t able to find a sign of any more eagles. Well, that was unlucky. Time to look somewhere else. He managed to make it to the ground without annoying the bird and getting beaks to the back. Eagles: 3 | WC: 3389

His next stop was the Heart. He hadn’t been there in a long time. No real reason. He hadn’t ever gone seeking missions, and he didn’t know anyone there. Not like Saionji did. But with the massive lightning-filled roof and the Raikage’s tower, the place was always an awe inspiring sight. And with the only source of natural greenery within all of Kumo, it seemed like it would be a perfect place to find some eagles. At least the one in his cage seemed to like it, judging by the inquisitive chirps it was letting out.

Nasu climbed onto one of the dome’s support beams, got yelled at by a passing Jounin, ignored it, and got to a good vantage point. He slipped off his belt and set it aside as he got settled on the ledge. Overlooking the entire park gave you a pretty good view of how massive the Heart was. He was beginning to doubt he’d be able to find the birds again. As he looked out over the park, he didn’t see anything that looked remotely like an eagle. He let out a groan and fell backwards onto the ledge, covering his face with his hands. He turned his head to the side and looked at the bird he currently had with him. It was staring at him with its piercing yellow eyes.

“You have any clue where the others are at?”

The eagle chirped in response and tilted its head.

“Yep, that’s what I thought.”

He kicked his legs and swung up to a sitting position, casting his gaze over the park again. Well, there was one more place he could look. Though, he’d probably get yelled at for climbing it. Nasu got to his feet, slipped the cage onto his back again, and headed over towards the large glowing tower at the center of the Heart.

The yellow light permeating from the Tower’s walls made all the shapes on the outside of it seem to melt into the structure. So it was entirely possible that an eagle (or two, please be two) was hidden among the ledges and crevices that lined the tower.

His passenger chirped as he got close to the base of the tower and grabbed onto a ledge. Using a combination of rock climbing and wall walking, he was able to get pretty high without jostling the eagle. After about twenty minutes of climbing, his bird started chirping loudly, rustling around in the cage. He paused in his climbing. The eagle sensed something.

There wasn’t enough room to set the cage down and go searching freely, so he had to carefully pick his way along in hopes that he’d find whatever it was the caged eagle sensed. Thankfully, he didn’t have to look far. As he grabbed the ledge above him and hauled himself up he came face to face with an angry bird. Nasu almost fell to his death as a razor sharp beak was snapped at his face. He yelped, scrabbling at the ledge for a good grip. The brown eagle hissed and flared her wings, trying to scare off the intruding Genin.

Why were there mean eagles? Shouldn’t they all have nice temperaments? People had to use these guys to send messages. How would you send messages if the birds kept trying to eat your face?

Nasu sighed, and climbed down the ledge, away from the angry eagle. She fluffed up and screeched, hopping further away from him. He prayed she wouldn’t fly away. That was the last thing he--oh, there she went. Fantastic.

He groaned loudly, pressing his forehead against the side of the building. Nasu turned, fully prepared to begin his descent back to the ground when his eagle let out a screech. He turned his head, checking to make sure she hadn’t hurt herself or something when, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a brown shape off to the side. Picking his way over, Nasu saw two young messenger eagles huddled together, eating some poor rodent they had managed to catch. He suppressed a shudder, but couldn’t help the rising feeling of yuck.

There was a small piece of building jutting out off to his left, the outcropping looked sturdy so Nasu slipped off his belt and hung the cage from it. Deciding that it would hold, Nasu turned back towards the younger birds and hauled himself onto the ledge. Balancing onto his toes, he crept over. It was a dumb idea to try and take food from predator birds, he knew that, but he didn’t have any other ideas. And he only had a few hours left before sundown.

Surprisingly, the eagles didn’t try and rip his face off as he approached them. The closer one chirruped and looked at Nasu before hopping a little further away from him. The Genin let out a silent gag as he reached over and grabbed the mangled rodent and slowly dragged it back towards the cage. Both young eagle made a noise like they were insulted, but hopped along after the food. He backed up past the outcropping where he had hung the cage and lifted it up in front of him. He pulled the door open, tossed the food into it and turned the open face towards the young birds.

They each entered the cage to get at the food before the currently caged eagle could eat it all and Nasu was able to turn the, now heavy, cage and latch the door. He let out a small chuckle as he slipped his belt over his head. He had five eagles now. Halfway done.

Now to get these ones back home.

Nasu climbed down, thanking the heavens for wall-climbing jutsu. He’d probably have fallen numerous times if not for his ability to have holds wherever he placed his feet. Once his sandals had safely touched onto the grass, Nasu glanced over his shoulder. The birds were fine, enjoying the snack they had. He gave a smile and took off back towards the rookery.
