Around the Riverbend

It was very early in the morning, skies clear and the sun having only just risen. Having woken early Hajime had decided to take the opportunity to get in some exercise. With that he had grabbed his stuff and soon thereafter had found himself at a clearing a fair distance away from the center of the village, a small river nearby with a treeline on the other side.

He couldn’t help but let out a sigh as he he looked around, a small smile crossing his face. Perhaps it was his subconscious that had led him here… this having been one of his mother’s favorite spots. In any case it was quiet. There were also a few trees and training dummies scattered around so it was an ideal spot to get in some training.

First things first he decided to get in some practice swings, placing his hand on the sword of his hilt and taking a deep breath. He closed his eyes and focused on the nearest training dummy, doing his best to clear out any intrusive thoughts. “HAAA!” he called out, opening his eyes as he dashed forward, drawing his sword and slashing in an upwards arc, aiming towards the imagined opponent’s upper body.

It was as he did so that he had a sudden thought, a memory of Souta coming to mind. They were both practitioners of Iaido and he had a vision of a technique he had once witnessed his dad using during training. It was a fairly low ranking technique as he recalled, one that he should easily be able to learn himself. It was the Clouding Eyes technique, an attack aimed towards the opponent’s eyes in an attempt to cripple their vision.

With that in mind he now had a plan and so he sheathed his sword and backed up several steps. He briefly closed his eyes, focusing on the memory of his father using the technique. He very vividly recalled the arc of the swing, though it was one that he would have to adjust for given the difference in height between them.

After replaying the memory a couple times he opened his eyes and got into position, taking a deep breath as he faced the dummy and placed his hand on his sword’s hilt. With a shout he dashed forward and upon reaching his target drew his blade, slashing in an arc aiming towards where the eyes would be on a human of similar proportions.

To his great delight he had gotten the attack right on the first try and he couldn’t help but feel a bit triumphant as he felt his blade sink in, leaving a shallow cut across the head. However there was no guarantee that it wasn’t just a fluke. With that in mind he once more sheathed his blade and backed up a few steps.

Once in position he once more got into position and after a moment… dashed forward, delivering another slash in the same manner with the same degree of success. The dummy’s face was in total tatters and he couldn’t help but feel a bit of satisfaction at the sight.

With that he sheathed his sword and for now decided to take a seat, simply staring out at the river as he let out a sigh. Why had he come out here and why had a vision of his father suddenly come to mind? Was it because he was feeling lonely? Maybe that was the case… honestly he wasn’t sure. erhaps somewhere deep down he was hoping someone would come along, as low as the chances were. He certainly wasn’t about to deny company if someone did come around...

Kibou's attention was caught by the sound of someone clearly practicing nearby and he curiously began to make his way over to the source of the noise, hopping from trees to trees before he jumped down near the river. On the other side, the hyuuga saw a strange dog-eared boy sitting quietly and quirked up an eyebrow, head tilted to one side as he stared at the stranger. "Hey, are you alright there?" He bent down, picked up a rocks and skipped it almost to the other side of the river, smiling slightly.

Takeshi was finding himself feeling nostalgic. Having spent the majority of his time working with Anbu lately he had little time for friends outside the organization. There had been a time where Nobu, Hajime, Kaori and himself would all play together. Each similar in age it had been a time where Takeshi had not even learned what it meant to be an outcast of the Hyuuga clan. He had his mother and his older sister Hanako with the same eyes as him, and the rest of his family didn’t. And that had never seemed to matter. He had heard that Hajime was back in Konoha, but he didn’t have any idea of what to say to him after the recent tragedy. Kaori was always better with those kind of things, but there had been a rift between the twins lately as Takeshi fell further into his training and isolationism within the dark confines of Anbu. Kaori had her butterflies and she had Hanako and their mother Aina. He had hoped she would comfort Hajime, while Takeshi and Nobu worked in the shadows to find those that threatened Konoha and stole Hajime’s parents from him. He felt he couldn’t face the boy until he had done his job and there were some answers to give.

And yet he found himself here, the same place they all so often played together. His Aunt Masami had taken them on many trips swimming and playing in this river. The pain of her murder still plagued him, left unresolved in his heart. He looked down, his pale eyes filled with sorrow until he heard a sudden shout up ahead. Activating his Byakugan instinctually his expanded gaze immediately fell upon none other than his childhood friend; Meiyo Hajime. Suddenly the young teenager smiled, and then found himself conflicted again. Was this really the time? How would he even act seeing him now? But something called to him, he couldn’t just turn his back on his friend. They had both been drawn here for a reason, he was sure of it. Taking a deep breath the young man approached, running a hand through his hair and pulling out the hairband. He didn’t have to pretend to be the Hyuuga that the clan wanted him to be anymore. Not around Hajime.

Wearing a teal haori and grey pants, he was dressed up more formally than he would have liked but that couldn’t be helped now. Growing up he had only ever worn t-shirts and more causal and modern clothing, it was only when he awakened his Byakugan at the age of 7 that he felt the pressure of the clan to conform. His mother had always resented that he tried to follow their traditions, or at least that’s what he felt. She was a rebel through and through and it always seemed to hurt her when he went to train with his uncles and came back more prim and proper than before. But in his mind he was doing it for her, so that he could gain respect from the clan and one day gain the influence to change them for the better. Now, he wasn’t sure what he wanted. But he knew that if anyone could help him reconnect with himself it was Hajime. Takeshi approached with a quickened pace, forgoing his trained stealthy gait as he observed the Iaido technique. Hajime moved well, swift and precise. Setting his bow and quiver down by a rock he moved to sit next to his friend. “Now I know who to come to if there’s a training dummy uprising” he teased, smirking. His long brown hair fell down around his shoulders as he reached over to place a hand on Hajime’s back. “It’s good to see you” he said simply, wanting to say more but the words didn’t come to him. Everything else felt like treading dangerous ground, like he might say the wrong thing. So instead he simply exhaled slowly and stared ahead at the water, recalling the memories they had there when suddenly he saw a Hyuuga boy calling out from the other side of the river. Fate certainly was interesting today.
