Uh.... oops? I guess?
Suzume was very nervous. The raven haired girl sat in a chair with a masked ANBU agent on either side of her, her bag in her lap and her stoat on the bag. She was petting the little animal's belly with a small smile on her lips as she nibbled on her in return. From time to time little Koto would leap out from under Suzume's hand and bound around on her lap, another chair, even a guard, get a glare, jump down and back under Suzume's hand again. Once in a while this garnered a giggle from the girl but not every time.
She didn't want to admit it, but the guards on either side of her scared her.
She was worried about who was coming to get her too. All the Hokage had said was that it would be his son, but she had no idea how old the Hokage was... or how old his son was. Would he be another masked man? Would he really show her around or was this some ruse to take her down to a cell?
The young yellow-eyed girl drew in a shaking breath as she tried desperately not to wonder too hard.

When Yozei had been summoned to the Hokage office he hadn’t quite been sure what to expect. He had been home of course, laying in a hammock in the large backyard of his father’s home. More often than not he was living there, despite being somewhat noisy at times inside the home there was plenty of backyard to train in or lounge around. Collecting his forehead protector he tied it around his head and strapped on his kunai holster and hip pouch. He had only recently graduated and became a genin, not more than a week or two ago, if he was being summoned it was likely due to a mission of sorts and as such he should always be prepared. Thanking the messenger the boy set off, running wasn’t exactly his style and it hadn’t seemed particularly urgent though he tried or at least a somewhat brisk pace.
It was only spring but even still he could feel the afternoon warmth of the sun shining down on him. The boy wore full length tan pants and a grey hoodie overtop of a deep red shirt. The coloring tended to bring out the reddish pigment in his hair over the darker brown base or even the soft pink tones that sometimes were apparent in more gentle light or against neutral backdrops. ‘I wonder if this will be my first team mission’ the thought was actually rather exciting. As lazy as he often appeared he actually had been training quite hard most days though this usually took place earlier in the morning so he could spent the rest of the day recovering and enjoying the pleasant weather and environment that Konoha had to offer.
When he arrived however he was debriefed in a room adjacent to the lobby of what his duties were to be. Certainly not what he had been expecting. Escorting a foreigner around the village? Someone who might turn out to be a security risk. He hardly seemed fitting though the ANBU operative did mention that it was a girl so perhaps the intent was to allow her to let her guard down somewhat around a person who didn’t pose much threat while ANBU observed from a distance. Whatever the reason Yozei trusted his father’s judgment as well as the fact that his trained operatives would keep him safe if there actually was any danger.
Ascending a flight of steps the boy soon came to the main hallway leading towards the relatively large Hokage office. Along the walls of this hallway were evenly spaced out pictures of each of the previous kage, working their way in order until reaching about 10 feet before the couches and waiting area before the door of the office itself. The last picture in line was of course that of the 17th Hokage, Natsuki Takeo, the boys own father. Normally it would always catch Yozei’s eye as he approached, reminding him of the first time he had met the man, the same time that he had first walked down this hallway.
On this occasion however his attention was immediately drawn to the girl, guarded on either side by a pair of ANBU operatives whom stood quietly, still as statues. She was younger than he had thought, actually rather cute and seemingly innocent. “So, I guess I’m your tour guide for the day. My name is Yozei..Natsuki Yozei.” He clarified, it still came as a second thought to include a last name though slowly he was growing more accustomed to it. A smirk came to his lips as he noticed the critter as he immediately thought of his own experience in pets, his aptitude for raising and training falcons. He was sure they would make short work of a furry little meal like this rodent, even if they did prefer other birds. The genin would bow shortly, one hand behind his back and the other across his chest in a more casual yet still respectful and eloquent fashion.

As Yozei appeared, Suzume suddenly jumped up to her feet with a yelp. In her nervousness she hadn't even seen him approach until he'd spoken and it had startled her. Koto clung onto the girl for dear life a moment before racing up to her shoulder and leveling a glare at her before turning its little black eyes onto Yozei. Suzume herself felt a blush spread across her cheeks as she did her best to bow in return as Yozei introduced himself. "Suzume." she said simply in introduction. However while Yozei's bow had a taste of formality to it, Suzume's was quite different. She had only ever learned to bow in a dojo and so rather than curtsey or something similar, she stood with arms stiff at her sides and bowed, her eyes never leaving Yozei as she did so, never letting him out of her sight.
Naturally this had been how Kotone had taught her how to greet someone, especially someone you don't know. Hurriedly she reached up and scooped Koto from her shoulder and practically shoved her in her bag as she stepped away from the two ANBU guards, giving them each a nervous glance as she stepped away.
"Uh... so where to?" she asked Yozei, a bit of a blush still present on her cheeks as her yellow eyes glanced here and there, trying to overcome her own nerves. "...am I going to be stuck sleeping in a cell?"

The boy smiled apologetically when he realized he had startled her. He wasn’t exactly the most light-footed person and certainly had never trained specifically in stealth so surely this just meant that the girl had a lot on her mind and understandably was quite distracted in her thoughts. It surprised him that she bowed in return, it was a custom that seemed relatively rare within Konoha, at least outside of older and more traditional clans such as the Hyuuga, Yamanaka and Senju. Still, it was refreshing and certainly made his own formality feel less out of place. Her name too was a welcome revelation, the operative downstairs had failed to include it in the debriefing. “Sorry for startling you Suzume, that’s a cute little critter you’ve got there. What is it?” he wondered, making some casual conversation. Contrary to his father he never really grew up around the outdoors much and aside from falconry had limited knowledge and interaction with animals.
As she would surely answer his question and then stow the little guy away in her bag Yozei stepped to the side and turned gesturing for her to walk alongside him and to his left. The same side that his sword in its lacquered red and black sheath was strapped to. He had to remind himself not to walk with his hand on the sheath of the weapon, what little training he had received in escorting potentially hostile individuals reminded him to keep his weapon secured and at the ready, better to keep someone on the same side so that one’s drawing hand would be less likely to be interrupted and so the steadying hand could be used to push an opponent back and create distance. The boy after all was a swordsman first and a shinobi second, trained to be a protector of the royal family.
Ultimately he ended up resting his left hand at his hip, thumb resting on the hem of his pants and fingers gently resting on the sheath. It was fairly casual and still satisfied his instincts. His right hand reached up to his neck as he looked over to her, realizing that they were about the same height though she was quite thin whereas he had recently been putting on some lean muscle. “Uhh. I honestly hadn’t thought much about it. What sort of things interest you?” he wondered. Konoha had much to offer, an entire day could easily spent touring the inner markets, restaurants and buildings or similarly admiring the various forests, rivers and fields. If he were to guess though it would be the city life that was the most unique to their village, considering much of the country shared the same natural beauty though only in Konoha could their level of technology, sophistication and sheer population be found. His eyes went wide as she mentioned sleeping in a cell. “Not if I have anything to say about it. As far as I’m aware you’re to be treated as a guest here. Stick with me and you’ll be just fine” he reassured with a smile and a gentle pat on the back.

"She's a stoat named Koto." Suzume was still blushing as she put the animal away and followed Yozei. Granted she was a bit in a hurry on the latter simply because she didn't like the way her ANBU guards were staring at her, or hovered around her. As they started walking, she noticed that Yozei's sword hand seemed to pause as if looking for something to do, and she couldn't help a bit of a chuckle. "I'm not going to be offended if you touch your blade. It's a habit for most samurai." she said as she reached up and touched the hilt of her own sword where it rested at her shoulder, as if to simply demonstrate she understood the way a swordsman felt about his blade.
The further they walked, the more relaxed the woman became. Though she was certain she and Yozei weren't alone, he seemed to have a calming effect on her, if only because he didn't seem to completely treat this as a guard detail. As he asked her about her interests, the girl couldn't help a bit of a blush and a shrug. "I want to learn everything I can about chakra." she admitted, turning to look at him with a bit of a smile. "But I'm guessing that's not possible here." she added, looking around them as they walked. "I'm told villages love their secrets... and I think I see why... maybe just show me what you think defines Konoha? What is it you love about it?" The girl had never been in a major village before, and as such she had no idea what she should want to do. As someone who grew up outside of one, she mostly was curious about what others loved about them.
Her relief only increased as Yozei mentioned her being a guest, making it clear she wouldn't be sleeping in a cell and she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "I wasn't sure... the two who interviewed me seemed to consider it at least." she said, wrinkling up her nose as she thought about Onigumo. "Especially the one in the mask."

The boy nodded, taking in the information. Evidently a stoat was some subspecies of the weasel family that he hadn’t heard of before. He would have to ask his dad more about them when he got the chance, the man was a constant source of information pertaining to all things involving animals and wildlife and he was always encouraging Yozei to ask questions and fuel his curiosity on such matters. As they began walking down the long hall he found himself smiling even more widely than before when the girl seemed to relax for a moment and let out a light chuckle. Yozei shrugged his shoulders, “You seemed nervous, didn’t want to make that worse. I appreciate it though, I guess you’ve probably grown up around swords too huh?” he figured, glancing to the weapon across her back. It was interesting to see the comparison. Typically it was a samurai’s way to carry their sword at their hip and more of a shinobi modification to keep a shorter sword such as a Wakizashi or Ninjato strapped to their back. Oddly enough in this situation it was reversed. Perhaps this indicated that the girl had some form of shinobi training or mentorship after all whereas Yozei had found his start learning very traditional swordsmanship, taught by samurai of the royal courts.
His hand moved lower to rest more comfortably over the upper end of the wooden saya. As they came to the end of the hall the girl mentioned her interest in chakra. Opening the door for her he would allow her to go ahead first before closing the door behind him and leaving the two ANBU operatives behind for the time being. Surely from here on out they would be a far less visible presence, observing from a distance and anticipating their path. “So, is that what brought you here then?” he wondered, putting the pieces together. Still she had to have had some kind of training beforehand. “You’ve been taught by a shinobi before haven’t you? The way you carry your sword, the look in your eyes. You’ve had a taste and you want more I can tell” he observed and for a moment his eyes seemed to pierce with the same intelligence and observational skills as his father. Smiling as they walked down the stairs he looked her over again, assessing just how skilled she might be. Clearly his father didn’t see her as a threat to permit her weapons and to not have her chakra sealed with any visible fuuinjutsu. Already Yozei was beginning to see that perhaps the Hokage had underestimated her. He nodded, contemplating her words. “Tell you what, don’t run off on me or try anything and if all goes well maybe I can demonstrate a thing or two. Who knows, maybe I can pick up a few tricks from you too” he hoped optimistically. He’d love for them to both come out of this day learning from one another.
He was still contemplating what it was that really defined Konoha to him when they reached the lobby. He noticed that the ANBU operative who had debriefed him was nowhere in sight there nobody made any attempt to stop them or question him as the pair neared the main doors. Clearly the receptionist and the handful of other shinobi in the room had been debriefed on the situation already. Yozei looked at the girl with a hint of compassion, “Well it’s not like you’re a criminal or anything right? Should I be worried?” he joked lightly. “That’s just ANBU for you, they tend to be hard-asses but you can’t really blame them, it’s their job to always consider the worst case scenario and keep the village safe, I’m sure you’ll find that most people, shinobi and civilian alike are much more friendly” he reassured, clearly feeling quite safe within the village, he wasn’t as naïve as most his age and certainly not as much as a civilian, there was a lot he learned from being the Hokage’s son though even despite that he carried the lessons of having a good heart and a kind soul as being the most important.

"Honestly... I found this place by accident." Suzume admitted with a bit of an embarrassed laugh as she was asked about what had brought her here. "I was travelling with..." she trailed off a moment, her mind seeming to wander briefly before she returned to what she had been saying. "...with my father. He went off for a 'business meeting' and I chose to go explore. Next thing I know I meet a girl with strange ears, tail, and antlers. I was brought here and... well." She shrugged, scratching the back of her head as she thought over the odd coincidences that had led her here, realizing in silence that as much as she wanted to explore she knew she couldn't stay long.
Kenji would seek her out eventually.
But as she was asked about being taught by a shinobi she seemed to shrug and shake her head in more confusion than anything. "I was and I wasn't." she admitted. "I'm from Iron Country, I stayed at a small commune, a small town, with a woman named Kotone. Kotone-sensei knew some ninjutsu but she wasn't from any major village, and she refused to teach anyone. She always told us that that kind of power would only tempt one towards the darkness." She frowned as she thought about it, remembering the day Kenji had come to the commune and they had met, remembering how things had changed then. "She only used it twice that I ever witnessed. Once when a student younger than I nearly died in training, she healed him. And the other the day I was forced to leave and she took on an army of mercenaries to help me get away..." Her eyes seemed to be staring at something far away as they walked, her words trailing into quiet, but she was snapped out of her reverie at his mention of possibly showing her something.
"I would love that!" she admitted, speaking excitedly and quickly covering her mouth with her hands and giggling as she realized just how eager she sounded. "Sorry." she admitted with a bit of a blush. "I've gotten to learn a little since then, but not much. Mostly I've been trying to learn what chakra is capable of... but no one seems to be able to tell me." Of course the inexperienced girl had no idea there was a reason for this. That chakra's possibilities were near endless.
Clearing her throat she tried to focus on what Yozei had already said, specifically his mention of maybe learning from her. "Well I know some Yoshin... it's a style that focuses on key points of the body to quickly debilitate, mostly about precise strikes. I also know some hand to hand stuff, it's similar though. I was taught more about breaking bones than anything when I learned that."
As they walked along outside, Suzume found herself momentarily distracted as she looked around her at the various buildings and the girl just smiled awhile. "This is beautiful." she admitted, finding herself liking the place already. "It must be wonderful to live here..." She looked at the various buildings, including smaller restaurants and the like, as well as stalls where other goods were sold. Koto herself stuck her little head out of Suzume's bag to sniff at the air curiously. Of course as Yozei mentioned Suzume being a criminal the girl suddenly blushed hard, turning a deep shade of scarlet. "Uh... well I'm not." she admitted, giving Yozei a fairly guarded look as she realized he didn't know, and silently wondered if she really wanted him to know. "That's why the masked man wanted me jailed... to use me against my father. I hardly know the man, only just found out about him a few weeks ago... but I guess he thought I'd make a useful pawn." She turned away from Yozei a moment, eyes drifting towards the ground as she thought about the way she had snapped at the Hokage about getting revenge for her mother's death. "I'm glad your father didn't go for that."
Her eyes drifted to the buildings once more with a sigh as she watched people go in and out, even passing them. 'I wouldn't want to be responsible for what Kenji would do to this place if they had done that...'
Kenji would seek her out eventually.

Her eyes drifted to the buildings once more with a sigh as she watched people go in and out, even passing them. 'I wouldn't want to be responsible for what Kenji would do to this place if they had done that...'

As they walked Yozei mostly just listened. He was glad that Suzume was opening up to him so much. It seemed that as soon as her guard went down a bit she loved to talk, which suited him just fine. The boy was certainly curious and shared a similar desire for knowledge and understanding. Though this usually came in the form of him keeping to himself and reading or taking lessons from tutors or family members there was something special about hearing experiences straight from the source, gaining insight to the lives of others. Even though he was initially disappointed that he hadn’t been called on for a mission already he was grateful for this opportunity and the time he was allowed to spend with this foreign girl. She mentioned travelling with her father as well as her encounter with Masami, whom he had encountered on several occasions though still didn’t understand exactly why she possessed such odd traits, it seemed one of those things that you just learn not to question.
Geography however was one of his better subjects and so her mention of Iron Country certainly garnered an interested expression. Immediately he envisioned the look of the country as seen on a map, recalling that they were famous for a large Samurai population and powerful military force. ‘I guess that makes sense’ he realized, considering that in such a samurai rich population those who wielded chakra would view it as a tool of corruption and imbalance. Of course he didn’t agree with that assessment but he understood the perspective. Suddenly the strength that he imagined in the girl made sense, her training sounded quite brutal, far more intensive and hands on than his own experience. He wondered just how easily she might be able to defeat him in a match. “She sounds like quite the woman…a strong role model” he speculated carefully. Something about the distant look in the girls eyes told him there was more to the story and so he treaded carefully, unsure of exactly what kind of relationship she had with her former mentor and her overall experience in that commune.
After he offered to show her some ninjutsu something she had said just before that finally sank in. ‘Just the other day?’ he wondered, unsure if he had heard her right. Iron country was a thousand miles away, maybe more. Only a top tier shinobi could cross that distance even in a matter of three or four days. Of course she could have easily meant a week or more in reality, it was mostly just an expression after all, nothing to read too much into. Quickly enough the thought was far from his mind as the young man was caught up in how cute the girl was with her giggling and blushing. He caught himself staring and smiling for a moment or two too long and became slightly red in the face himself. Smirking and looking away he played it off casually enough though it was evident there was some attraction there. “Honestly I’m still figuring that out myself. I’m kind of new to this world too, have only lived here for a few years. Before that I was cooped up in the same place all my life” he admitted, looking back at her again and rewarding her openness with some of his own.
As they exited the building the young gentleman once again opened the door for her, thinking nothing of the gesture, it was simply how he was raised. He ‘hmm’d’ and nodded as the girl mentioned Yoshin. It wasn’t a style he was familiar with and he wasn’t sure if there was anything he could take from it that could supplement his own training or preference, still he had no doubt that she was skilled with her blade and worked the techniques well. He let out a light chuckle at the mention of her hand to hand style. “Sounds like how my dad likes to fight, ruthless but efficient. He keeps trying to teach me hand to hand techniques but I’m not very good at it. I think whatever I do try to focus on will more likely be some throws or joint locks, just enough to redirect someone away from me so I can draw my sword. That’s where my heart really is, problem is I left the palace before I could learn much more than the basic stances and drills of the Shuryoutsuru style, my dad says he knows someone in the village though that can teach me so I’m looking forward to that” he explained. It was more of a traditional sword style taught to Samurai and royal guards of Fire Country, seeing that there were so few it was quite rare to come across.
Leading the girl into the heart of the village Yozei was pleased that she seemed to be enjoying some of the culture and spirit of Konoha. Even just walking through the busy streets and one could feel the kindness, love and comradery in just about every action of the common people. Many knew one another even in a village of tens of thousands. It was the most populated village in all of Fire Country and even compared to the other shinobi villages, also having the greatest ratio of civilians among this population. Just about every trade could be found within the large districts, farmers, merchants, craftsmen, cooks, musicians and actors. The village was rich with trade, production and culture. Quaint stalls and street vendors, open seating and hanging lights and paper lanterns were common as were outside markets and this was the part of town he would take her to first. There was also far larger buildings and more advanced structures in other more rich and densely populated areas though these family focused areas seemed to be the true heart of the village. Often children and families alike would come out to dine at restaurants and gather in parks even into the night.
Currently it was only mid-afternoon. Three or four o’clock perhaps though it seemed one could always smell food of some sort in the air. Noodle stands, dumplings or various treats were common and later into the night barbeque or sushi were quite common dinner options. Even though people and buildings were everywhere, even within the center of the village there were the occasional tree or shrubs and flowers decorating pathways and often wrapped in some form of lighting so that even when the sun set a gentle glow of light ensured people could travel about and feel safe. Actual streetlamps even dotted several areas along the outskirts of the village in districts more associated with training or exercise for those who liked to indulge in late night practice. “Yeah it is” he agreed, looking between their surrounding and back to her, seeing her captivated in the village somehow made him appreciate everything even more. “To answer your earlier question, what I love most about the village is the sense of family and friendship. Growing up I always felt alone and isolated and even though my surroundings were beautiful and I had everything I could hope for I still felt this constant pit in my stomach, as if I didn’t belong". He laughed at her reaction to being suggested as a criminal though backed off suddenly when she hinted that her father was a criminal. “I’m sorry to hear that, it wouldn’t be fair to punish you for the crimes of your father, I’m glad too that my dad didn’t resort to that” he then realized something. “Wont your father come looking for you? How do you think he’ll react when he finds out you were here?” he wondered, honestly more concerned for Suzume’s safety than anyone in the village. He couldn’t imagine that her father would be anywhere near as powerful or dangerous as he actually was.

[Plotboard] My Guide, or my Captor?
It was clear Suzume had experience in feeling alone. As Yozei spoke of that feeling, her expression seemed to drop a bit, her mind shifting to her time at the orphanage, but when he turned to asking about her father her mind was pulled away from that for the moment. She sighed quietly as they walked along, her steps slowing as she thought on it. "He will eventually look for me." she admitted. "So I can only stay a couple of days at best I think... but I tend to disappear on him alot." she added, chuckling a bit, even smirking as she remembered how angry he got about it. "He'll wait a few days at least before he gets worried, so I can enjoy some time here at least." She looked like a rather mischievous sort as she turned to look at Yozei, that smirk still plastered on her lips. "Rumor is his anger is something to be feared... but I find it fun to torment him. I don't think he ever expected to be a father, so he has no idea how to react when I run off or disobey. So long as I'm not putting myself in danger though, he'll relax."
But she knew he wouldn't like where she went, exposing herself to a main village. "He won't be happy with me for this though, he'll view this as a danger. If not to me, then to him." Her expression seemed to shift from playfulness to something more serious, almost a sadness even. "I'm his weakness you see." she admitted. "He views himself as being immortal, even untouchable. He admitted to me when we met that if he had known of me years ago he might have killed me to avoid that weakness... but since my mother's death I guess he can't bear to see me go. So he's scared. He's scared someone will use me against him, and he's scared I could one day rival him in power."
But she broke from her seriousness before long, or at least from that serious topic. "You mentioned lonlieness though, I know how that goes." she told him. "I grew up an orphan in that commune, until a few weeks ago I didn't know I had living parents, I didn't even know anything about them." She reached into her bag and took out the journal, hugging it to her chest as she thought it over. "This is all I have left of my mother. It tells of everything she ever did as a shinobi."
As they walked along, the girl sighed again, suddenly hating the serious turn their discussion had taken, but a smell overtook her nose and she turned to look at one of the nearby restaraunts. "Something smells good!" she exclaimed with a smile returning to her face. That smell of course was barbecue, something Suzume had never had before. At the commune her diet had consisted primarily of grains, fruits, and vegetables, meat had actually been a rarity.

[Plotboard] My Guide, or my Captor?
Yozei soon began to realize he had picked a bit of a sensitive topic or two actually, bringing up both feelings of loneliness and delving deeper into the relationship between Suzume and her criminal of a father. On one hand he felt glad they could relate to one another to some extent but on another he felt guilty for bringing down her mood. Still, the insight didn’t seem so bad at first, her relationship seeming fairly typical even of a teenage girl and her father. He smirked when she mentioned sneaking out for days at a time. “Bit of a rebel eh?” he commented, she didn’t look it at first though he was starting to see more of a mischievous side in her. He had always been rather straight laced himself, raised to be respectful, noble and obedient though since moving to Konoha he had slowly been coming out of his shell. Something about a girl who could help him discover a greater sense of freedom and fun was quite appealing. He had only recently begun to take an interest in girls and he had always been skeptical of the ones he had grown up around in the academy, many had seemed quite shallow or two faced, only taking an interest in him once he began to actually do well and stand out. The truth was however that he simply hadn’t given them a proper chance, too held back by his own insecurities.
He looked concerned for a moment as she spoke of her father’s wrath though she didn’t appear scared in the least so it was clear he had never taken out such feelings on her. Yozei hoped he never would. “A couple days huh?” he muttered to himself, thinking it over. He hadn’t realized she would be staying for more than just the one night. ‘Guess it wouldn’t hurt to get to know her’ he decided, likely he would see her again even after the tour he was obligated to give. The boy pondered her next words, shrugging his shoulders, “Just don’t tell him then, I’m sure you could make up a good lie if you had to” he suggested, winking playfully. Her tone grew more serious again though and he reacted accordingly, becoming quiet and listening to what else she had to say. He understood why a criminal wouldn’t want to attract attention from a shinobi village, that was just common sense though the genin’s eyes narrowed as she mentioned immortality. Was the man deranged? Or really that powerful? Perhaps both. He felt a sudden pit in his stomach as Suzume mentioned her father’s words. He looked at her deeply, seeing a pain and burden that he couldn’t fully comprehend. “I’m sorry” he uttered solemnly. Both for her mother’s passing and her father’s cruel nature. “He’s really that strong?” he treaded carefully now, honestly not wanting to stay on the topic too long, he just had to ask, was this man really a threat to Konoha? Someone who could even rival his own father, the Hokage?
As the topic changed the mood lightened somewhat though not by much. He nodded, remembering how it had felt, though in comparison to what Suzume had been through it felt a foolish thing to be saddened by. He knew that was the wrong way to look at it, sadness was sadness regardless if someone else had it worse though perspective was still an interesting thing and it certainly made him appreciate his life more. “That must have been really hard. Until a few years ago I didn’t know anything about my father, it was just my mom and I and because I was a bastard my family disowned me. Even though I had family living all around me I always felt unwanted, they wouldn’t even let me take their last name. If it weren’t for my mom I’m not sure how I would have turned out. I’m glad you at least had Kotone to raise you, even just having that one person really makes a difference huh?” he was almost tearing up talking about how ashamed the Harukatsu had been of him though being a guy of course he tried to cover it up as much as possible. He had almost missed that Suzume mentioned her mother was a shinobi, just another layer to the mystery that was this girl.
Taking a few deep breaths as they moved through the streets the heavy atmosphere would solely begin to dissipate, leaving in its wake a sense of deeper connection between the two. Though many circumstances were quite different they certainly shared a few similar experiences and could understand much of the struggles that had impacted their young lives thus far. At the mention of food a sly smile came to the boy’s face. She was certainly in for a treat if she had never experienced proper barbecue. “Come on, my treat” he offered, impulsively reaching for her hand in excitement as he guided her to the nearby restaurant. A few turns and a shortcut through a back-ally and they would soon be at the door of the rustic building, built out of sturdy timber and relatively large compared to most konoha restaurants. The place had gained a lot of popularity over the years and for good reason. The owner and head chef Shen had often served the Hokage as well as the Bannin Yoru as well as many other noteworthy individuals. The quality of their meats was second to none.

[Plotboard] My Guide, or my Captor?
When asked about her father's strength, the girl didn't answer. Some part of her knew that he was, but in truth she hadn't witnessed much of his strength for herself. Most of what she had seen had been simple tricks here and there, and somehow even she knew that was just the tip of the iceburg. She couldn't answer the question truthfully, only based on a hunch, and so she chose to remain quiet on the matter entirely. But as Yozei went into talking about his family, Suzume couldn't help a confused look. "Why would they disown you?" she asked, truly confused by the thought. "I have heard of people being disowned by families before, but I just don't understand it." she admitted, shaking her head. "They should be happy to have you at all... not everyone is that lucky." Suzume sighed, shaking her head as she tried to dispel the thoughts running through her mind. She had been raised as an orphan most of her life, the idea of being disowned by family just didn't make sense to her. Wasn't everyone happy to have family? As someone who had wanted that all her life, she couldn't understand anyone who would shun that.
As they came to the smell of food and Yozei suddenly grabbed her hand, a grin spread back across the girl's face as she raced to keep up with him, running alongside him until they came to that restaurant. "I grew up almost entirely on vegetables and things we could grow at the commune." she admitted as they came through the doorway. "Meat was a rarity... and a treat." she added as she walked in with him and the two were shown a seat. It wasn't until they sat that she let go of his hand, feeling a bit of disappointment as she did so. But the thought didn't make her blush like it would most girls, she was quite enjoying the boy's company already.
"You know you're different than most boys." she said, not realizing how odd her statement might seem. "At the commune the boys just liked to make fun of me... until I got stronger than them." she added with a bit of a laugh. "Sometimes when a new boy was brought to the orphanage they'd try to get him to tease me just to see if he'd be dumb enough to do it..." she shook her head, remembering the day Kenji had shown up that very thing had happened, and Kenji got to watch as Suzume broke a boy's arm for trying to start trouble with her. "Is that one of the things that's different here?" she suddenly asked. "I've heard that village life is easier, better even... is it because people don't try to hurt each other as much?" she wasn't sure how to phrase the question and felt like she had done a poor job of it, but other options just weren't coming to mind.

Yozei sighed, usually he hated talking too much about his past though since meeting his new team he had begun to realize it was possible for others to accept him as is. Given that Suzume’s father was a powerful criminal and her own background it wasn’t as if she would judge him, even if it was for a very different reason. It was beginning to seem that everyone had some form burden and if anyone could understand having conflicted feelings about one’s heritage it would be Suzume. The boy shrugged his shoulders, “Royal families tend to be overly traditional, the Harukatsu are no exception.” He shook his head, considering the whole idea of the matter, “I wish that’s how it was. It should be. It’s silly really to give so much power to a piece of paper, apparently my mom needs to be married for me to be ‘legitimate’ it never made much sense to me as a kid, still doesn’t really” he sighed, looking at the girl with a slightly guarded expression. “To tell you the truth, I still kind of like to think that if I just do well as a shinobi, show them what I can do, that my grandfather will be proud enough of me to change his mind and bend the rules. Stupid right? Why should I even care anymore?” he asked, mostly rhetorically. It was something he had been struggling with for years but until now he had never opened up to anyone enough to say it out loud. He knew he should be grateful to finally have a last name after all this time and he truly was though he couldn’t help feel slighted and like he still carried a chip on his shoulder because of it.
As they entered the restaurant the boy had a few moments to fully enjoy the feeling of holding Suzume’s hand. He hadn’t thought about it much as he led her along though he had certainly been happy in those short minutes. It was then that he realized he really was starting to like this girl, it would be hard to see her go though he fully intended on enjoying her company as much as he could while she remained in the village. He listened with interest as she explained that her diet had been quite different from his growing up. It was certainly something he had taken for granted. There hadn’t been a single time where he had ever went hungry, there were always large spreads of balanced meals, soup, tea, piles of steamed or grilled vegetables and typically at least two different kinds of meat and desert after that. Since moving to Konoha the only thing that really changed about his diet was perhaps the introduction of fish as a more regular meal and larger servings of beef. Not a day went by where protein rich foods weren’t on the menu, surely an expected result of living as a part of one of the most athletically impressive families in the world. “Honestly I can hardly imagine living like that, I’ll have to make sure you get your fill of meat while you’re here” he ensured with a smile, the potential innuendo going right over his head.
The two sat across from one another at a small booth with a circular grill built into the middle of it. It was one of the best features of the restaurant, being able to grill much of one’s meat themselves, at least if they ordered the specials which were marinated strips of meat of various flavors, types and seasonings. One could of course also order cooked foods such as classic steak or ribs and various other roasted or grilled foods and vegetables. Yozei looked surprised when Suzume called him different from other boys. He hadn’t really thought about it before, though he supposed it was true. His entire life he had been raised to be polite and respectful and that came across in his interactions with girls as well. In a way it made him far more mature than most his age. A first he simply smiled and nodded his head at the compliment, not knowing how to respond without sounding either overly formal or awkward. “I have a feeling you’re stronger than you let on, I’ll have to remember not to get on your bad side” he chuckled lightly, eying her up again and wondering just how much of a challenge she might be. For a genin his mind was quite tactical and he never underestimated an opponent, his father had drilled such things into him despite often not following the same advice himself. That seemed to be the curse of becoming too strong for one’s own good. Already Yozei had come to appreciate being outclassed by others, it forced him to hone his mind and find solutions to difficult problems.
The young genin furrowed his brow, considering the question. It was difficult to answer. “I don’t know about that, when I first got here I was teased a lot and so were others in the academy classes. People are afraid of what they don’t know, they like to make themselves feel stronger by putting down the weak. I don’t think that really changes much no matter where you go. And of course there’s lots of fighting too, everyone wants to get stronger and spars are a daily occurrence, most of the time though people here are quite friendly about it I think, working together as friends and partners to get better and rarely is anyone seriously hurt.” The boy ran a hand through his auburn hair as if grasping for better words and insight. He knew there was much more that could be explained but honestly he hadn’t spent much time with others though he did know that feeling of comradery and friendship now, even if it was a new feeling. “I feel like kids are the same everywhere but as we grow up and are placed on teams the shinobi of Konoha develop much stronger bonds and are overall far kinder to others and more understanding.” He added, nodding his head as he seemed content with this explanation.

Suzume shrugged as Yozei lamented not being legitimate, and then tried to brush off what he called 'stupid', the fact that he cared about it all. "Who knows? Maybe your mother will still get married, there's no harm to wish for acceptance from family." Suzume replied, flashing a small smile at the boy. "I spent my entire life wishing for my real family... maybe it was silly. I kinda had a family already, in Kotone-sensei anyway. But eventually I got what I wanted." She could have commented on whether or not that actually made her happy, but instead the girl shrugged. It was pretty clear she hadn't exactly landed yet on what she thought about her situation. She knew of her mother now, she knew her father, but while happy for what she knew she also felt a desire to see Kotone again and wondered if she'd trade everything she had now to go back?
Walking through the restaurant, hand in Yozei's hand, she didn't pick up on the innuendo either. The girl was simply too naive to think about such things, and it hadn't been something she had ever put much thought into yet. Boys in her commune had been mostly cruel, none worth wishing she could date, or to incite such thoughts in the teenager. But of course the girl was rather competitive in nature and as Yozei observed that she might have a strength to her, she grinned wickedly at him as she slid in to sit next to him. "Maybe we should spar later." she said in response, clearly thinking she might have the upper hand in such a fight.
She always thought she had the upper hand in a fight.
But as he spoke of the bonds of Konoha shinobi, the girl seemed to frown. "I've never really had friends like that I guess." she admitted. "At the dojo it was just about who was stronger. Everything was a competition... hell the day before I had to leave the commune, I was caught in the garden by a boy and he tried to fight me. All it got him was a broken arm." She shrugged and looked over at Yozei a moment. "Everyone was always trying to just be stronger."

A small smile once more crept upon the face of the auburn haired boy. It was comforting having someone to talk to about such thoughts. It was already helping him to sort through how he actually felt about all of it. “Yeah, maybe” he considered for a moment what would actually happen if his mother married someone other than his birth father. Would that be enough to legitimize him? Perhaps if he was officially adopted though he could never drive that wedge between himself and Takeo. Having his mother marry his father had been a dream of his once but now that he had grown closer to Aina as well as his half-siblings and step-sister he realized that he would actually hate to disrupt their family dynamic for his sake. “I think maybe I’ve been looking at it the wrong way. I have a true family now. In theory it would have been nice to have the option of pursuing politics as a Harukatsu though I don’t believe that’s my destiny. If I had been legitimate it’s unlikely my grandfather would have allowed me to become a shinobi. When one path closes another opens and I’m happy with the course my life is taking. It has led me here after all. I have purpose and am gaining strength and true friends, in a way I have far more freedom than I ever would have otherwise.” His thoughts were quite insightful as the gears in his mind turned, considering and comparing the course of his life on two distinctly different timelines.
There was little point in lamenting over what could have been when it was likely he would have wondered about this current possibility if the situation had been reversed. Instead he had now accepting his life for what it was and decided to make the most of it and be grateful for the opportunities given to him. It was amazing how much insight he had gained from just talking it out with Suzume. He had of course had such thoughts before but had always been on the fence about truly letting himself get attached to his new family or wishing to live in the past and take fate into his own hands. This girl that he barely knew combined with his recent encounter with Aina and his new team had been enough to sway him and affirm his beliefs.
As Suzume moved from across the table to sliding in next to him Yozei glanced at her nervously as a slight flush came to his face, his heart rate elevating notably. She had issued him a challenge as she did so luckily so perhaps she would mistake his infatuation with apprehension. ‘Does she like me?’ he wondered innocently, trying to make sense of why she would be moving in to sit next to him. Looking back at it he had grabbed her hand and she hadn’t seemed opposed to it. Still he wasn’t very experienced in reading girls and had much to learn. “Yeah..I’d like that” he answered meeting her intense and yet beautifully striking yellow eyes and feeling another flutter in his stomach. Honestly he felt like a girl for how nervous he was getting around her, it wasn’t like him at all. Again he was saved however as the waiter came by and he placed an order in for an assortment tray of various sample servings of marinated beef strips. The portions were enough for typically three people. He also ordered a large bowl of bok choy, steamed and then quickly wok fried in a light amount of oil, enhancing the flavor and sautéing it slightly.
Soon the topic was onto the subject of the academy and general life in Konoha. She stated that she had never had friends like what he was describing and so he could only look at her with a hint of longing and hope. “I’d like to be friends like that with you…” he stated softly hinting that perhaps he even meant more than friends, before he could regain a more casual tone and expression, letting her continue with her tale and chiming in at the opportune time, “Definitely better than ending up like that boy” he commented chuckling lightly as he smirked playfully, his cerulean blue eyes lighting up with happiness. Joking around here and there seemed to help with his nerves, likely a trait he picked up from his father whom at least at home was typically rather light hearted. Not more than a few moments later the food arrived, being quick to prepare and laid out before them. The meat had already been well marinated and seasoned though it was left up to the patrons to cook it over the grill built into the table. The server would stoke the coals and ensure the grill was adequately heated before wishing them a good meal and departing, arriving again only to provide them with some tea.
Picking up a set of chop sticks Yozei would start with a more lightly seasoned steak strip, placing a few of them on the grill and watching as it sizzled. “I usually cook it about medium rare though even well done doesn’t taste too bad” he commented before pointing out a few of the different sauces. “This one is just good old fashioned salt and pepper seasoning then we have a sweet barbeque sauce, one that is a little more smoky and lastly this one has a bit of kick to it” he stated, pointing out more of a spicy chipotle and chili oil marinade.

Suzume smiled as she saw the shift in Yozei's expression though it seemed almost fleeting. She had made boys nervous before, but never like this, and it caused a flutter in Suzume that she found quite nice. With a light blush she quickly turned her eyes to the table in front of her and nudged Yozei with a shoulder. "Yeah, friends would be nice." she admitted, fighting the blush that was working to deepen as she wondered about more than that herself. 'He's the son of the Hokage... and apparently I'm the daughter of someone they fear and hate...' She couldn't help the sad sigh that came at those thoughts. 'This is a really bad idea... I've read enough of those romance books to know even a crush can end badly...' Through her training Kotone had made sure Suzume understood the risks of relationships, and as a result the girl had decided sometime ago that she wasn't going to feel like this for any boy.
Of course, it was proving more difficult than she thought it would be to just shove it all aside. She was happy for the interruption as their food arrived and Yozei began explaining the different types. For several moments the girl just stared at the food in a state of surprise, honestly she had never seen so much meat in her life. "You eat like this all the time?" she asked in surprise. "How are you not fat?" she added almost rudely as she turned and poked Yozei in the stomach with a laugh.
After her moment of a giggle, she turned and picked up a set of chopsticks, picking up a piece of meat to smell it and wrinkling up her nose. It seemed to be a bit spicy and that burned her nose, but curious to know what it tasted like she set it on the grill with a couple of others, tilting her head as she watched it cook. "How do you know when it's done?" she asked.

To an onlooker there would be no mistaking that the two young teenagers had chemistry, each flushed in the face at opportune moments and giving one another fleeting looks. There was some awkwardness of course but each seemed genuinely pleased to be in the company of the other. That is what the ANBU operatives would observe though how they would go about telling this to the Hokage or if they would even be brave enough to explain this apparent infatuation was a matter for a later time. At least the girl didn’t appear to be a threat after all nor was the Hokage’s son in danger and that was enough to satisfy the pair of operatives well enough. They would continue watching the girl of course though with a degree of less caution than before as the edge of being assigned escort to a potentially dangerous target turned into chaperone duty for a pair of kids.
Meanwhile Yozei had completely forgot about their presence, unseen and unheard his attention had been completely diverted and consumed in the girl next to him. Every moment with her at this point felt both exciting and somehow comfortable. He felt himself savoring every moment that they made physical contact no matter how slight or brief, it just felt good to be close to her. Yet at the same time he was terrified he might do something to embarrass himself or offend her in some way. It was foolish though to feel this way about someone whom would be leaving the village indefinitely in just a day or two. Perhaps it was this situation precisely that gave weight to the feeling that every moment had significance to it and that time itself moved more slowly around her. He knew that there would be several instances to this day that he would remember. It wasn’t often that pretty young foreigners were welcomed in to the village.
When the food arrived Yozei had already piled high a heaping amount of bok choy and placed several strips of meat onto the grill. He was describing the flavors to her and also in the back of his mind deciding which order to eat them in and how to pace himself for the most enjoyable experience. Clearly she had taken note of this, commenting on his appetite. Immediately he gave a part bashful, part proud sort of grin, shrugging his shoulders slightly. He was about to comment in his defence when she decided to poke fun at him, quite literally in fact as she jabbed at his stomach with a finger. As any young teenager would he attempted to subtly flex his stomach upon impact. He would chuckle lightly at the unexpected action. There was certainly some notable resistance there, the onset of abs associated with a slim but athletic build. There wasn’t too much notable definition as of yet but if his father was any indication the boy’s genes held good potential for fitness. “I try to work most of it off, one of these days it’s bound to pay off” he explained with a smile and a hopeful tone. It was clear he looked up to his father and wished to reach his own potential, whatever that might end up being.
As Suzume asked about cooking meat he suddenly felt grateful for having learned a few basic cooking tips and tricks, honestly only really being any good at it in the last year or so. He chuckled as he noticed her going straight for the spiciest variety. “First of all, you’re braver than I am. I usually don’t like my food too spicy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you” he teased, winking playfully as he nudged her. Then flipping one of his strips of meat Yozei touched on the now seared and brown flesh with his chopsticks. “It’s easiest to go by feel though I suppose you could just keep to a certain amount of cooking time on each side. If you want it medium rare it should be firm on either side but have a little bit of give when you press into it, medium-well or something like that and it shouldn’t have any real give at all. Rare would basically be just barely browning either side and keeping it very squishy and bloody in the middle but that’s a bit underdone, practically still able to run off your plate at that point” he joked, shaking his head as he thought of how his dad tended to eat his food in such a bloody fashion. He had picked up a few similar tastes from the man but that was not one of them, having been raised in a palace it simply wouldn’t do to be served undercooked meat.

Suzume giggled at Yozei's return quip, turning and resting her head on his shoulder as she watched the meat begin to cook. She didn't think much of resting against him this way, but she couldn't help a smile as she did so, taking a moment to flip her cooking meat with her chopsticks after a moment. "Really, you don't like spice?" she asked with a chuckle as she sat up with a light sigh. "I've never had it, but it smells kinda good..." she remarked before taking a piece off, at about medium cooked level, and put it in her mouth. Her eyes lit up and the girl practically bounced in the booth as she picked up the second piece and turned to Yozei. "You gotta try it!" she said, holding it out for him to eat from her own chopsticks with a grin on her face.
She didn't seem to realize she had sauce dribbling down her chin. She was truly enjoying spending time with Yozei, and didn't even notice as the waiter came by to refill drinks, the way he smirked at the pair and their antics. "Come on..." Suzume would insist, waiting as sauce dripped from the meat to her hand underneath it.

As he began pulling a few of his strips onto his plate, satisfied with their tenderness Suzume suddenly did something unexpected, resting her head on his shoulder. It was at this point that he finally realized that she did like him and see him as potentially more than friends. Almost immediately his breathing began to slow, enjoying the moment even as he wondered what to do with his left arm. He certainly didn’t want to move it and disrupt this intimate moment though it also felt rather awkward having it just hang there uselessly. Hesitantly the boy shifted his left hand, gently placing it on the girl’s right leg, just above the knee. His own head tilted, brushing against hers as he closed his eyes. The world felt so calm and peaceful in those moments. Tranquil. Truthfully he didn’t want it to end, even taking in her scent and the sound of her breathing. He had never had a girlfriend before nor had it been a big priority in his life. Sure he enjoyed the company of girls and had hung out with a few of them on occasion but the connection had never been as intimate or fulfilling. The pair of them seemed to have a sort of natural bond and it was amazing quickly they had got on with each other.
His eyes opened as he felt her shifting and collecting her own strips of meat and just like that they were sitting apart again though his hand was still on her leg and from that moment alone he felt much closer to her than before. The nerves were beginning to subside somewhat, replaced by a stronger sense of comfort and attachment. He chuckled at her comment, retracting his hand and placing his left arm casually on the table before it got awkward. “I know, ironic” he admitted with a smirk, “A katon user who doesn’t like hot food” it hadn’t occurred to him until after he said it that she might not have known the term katon nor even knew beforehand that he utilized fire style jutsu. He watched her with curiosity as she took a bite of the steak with the spicy marinade. He was expecting to get a good laugh out of her reaction and was instead surprised to find that she enjoyed it. “No way” he said in defiance, chuckling as he brought up his open palms defensively.
As she pressed on however he of course finally caved. Sighing and then smiling he acknowledged his defeat. “Alright fine, I’ll try a bite” he conceded lightly. It was hard to deny her or be even a little bit upset. He was sure that whatever spice would be well worth making her happy. Leaning forward he would open his mouth and let her feed him. At first it didn’t seem so bad, the flavor was bold and tasty though as the heat began to kick in his face turned red and faint beads of sweat could be seen gathering. Meekly he gave her a half-hearted thumbs up, pretending to enjoy it even though he clearly wasn’t accustomed to spice. Swallowing the piece he would keep his mouth slightly open, panting shallowly before taking a long drink of water, nearly draining his glass. “Yeah, not bad” he wheezed, clearing his throat with a short cough as he tried to play it off casual but with a hint of humor and playfulness. No doubt the girl was laughing at him by now as he smirked back through a side-eyed expression, noticing now that she was getting herself covered in sauce. “Hold on, you missed a bit” he chuckled, shifting to face her and reaching in to wipe the sauce from her chin with his thumb.

Suzume wasn't very good at admitting when she was happy, or even content, having been brought up that happiness can be warped and twisted, and now her father having seen it as weakness. But the moments when she rested her head against his shoulder and felt his hand on her leg, those were very happy moments for the girl. Of course she couldn't let them linger long, some part of her worried that things might sour too quickly and so had begun her game with the spicy food. When he finally gave in the girl had thought she might have to resort to some form of adorable feline pouting expression, but he gave in before she had to go quite that far with it. As he tried to swallow it, and even pretended to like it, Suzume couldn't help but to laugh. It was clearly way too hot for him, and as he coughed she immediately set to putting more strips of the spicy meat on the grill, along with some veggie to go with it this time, before turning and laughing again at his expression.
As she turned to look at him again though, he made the comment about her 'missing some' and moved in to wipe the sauce from her face. At that Suzume couldn't help a deep blush and a muttered, "Oops..." as she let him wipe it away, and another thought crossed her mind as she looked at him. Of course, that thought only made her blush more. She laughed a bit again, as if trying to cover her own embarrassment, and looked to his thumb. With a goofy giggle and not even a thought to anything bad, the naive girl turned and licked the sauce from his finger with a laugh before looking at him. "Can't waste it!" she joked, though she found as she turned and looked at him, it hadn't helped that thought any.
She was still finding herself wondering what it'd be like to kiss him.

Those mischievous yellow eyes were dangerous. He had never seen anything quite like them, in a way, against her jet black hair it made the girl seem somewhat cat-like. Her playful antics seemed to reaffirm that image. Between her blush, giggle and the way she looked to him and then his thumb he could anticipate what she was going to do and was frozen in place at the thought as his body flushed with warmth. As innocent as the action had been Yozei couldn’t help but feel aroused when she licked the sauce from his thumb. He had never been with a girl sexually of course but he was at the age where the thoughts had crossed his mind and this was certainly one of those occasions. He found himself unable to think clearly, just sitting there for a moment in surprise as he looked her over and realized again how beautiful she already was and imagined how she would only get more attractive as her figure filled out in the coming years.
It was a shame he would likely never get to experience anything of the sort with her. He certainly wasn’t ready for something like that now regardless of whether or not he thought about it. Moreover he thought himself something of a gentlemen, adhering more to traditional rules and policies in regards to sex. He had vowed that he would wait until he truly loved someone, preferably even until marriage so that he might never find himself fathering a bastard or leaving a girl to father a child without him. It was something of a tender topic that he kept to himself and was in fact rather natural for someone of his circumstance and upbringing. His expression softening, the boy reigned in his hormones and urges, smiling gently and speaking without thinking. “You’re really cute” he admitted, subconsciously deciding to appreciate her playfulness to distract him from thoughts of her body. Part of him wanted to initiate physical contact with her again, maybe even kiss her but he was also very nervous and didn’t want to risk messing anything up or pushing her out of her comfort zone. Maybe she just wanted to have fun and not get too serious? Even just a kiss could mean a lot, it would to him after all.

Suzume seemed to pause as Yozei spoke, freezing up as she looked at him a moment, fairly wide eyed as she swallowed hard and her blush deepened. "I... uh..." She giggled a bit, looking down at her lap as she processed what he said. "No one's ever..." The boys at the compound used to tease her, but never did anyone really compliment her. "I... thank you..." She nudged him with a shoulder as she reached up to nervously tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear, the blush still present on her face as she suddenly swore under her breath.
Her food was burning.
She grabbed her chopsticks quickly and flipped the meat. "Well that'll be extra crispy..." she remarked, shaking her head before turning and looking at Yozei too. Suzume was completely new to the concepts of crushes and relationships, and it seemed to show. Of course when she was young she had been given the birds and the bees talk and such, but she had never been interested in it, if only because it had never really been an option for her. It had been drilled into her head that the other children were her brothers and sisters, and such relationships were forbidden there, at least until a certain age. Suzume herself, having never really gotten along with the boys and having no interest in girls, had never really considered the thought of being 'with' anyone before.
"You know..." she started, biting her lip a moment as she looked at him, blunt as ever as she forced herself to finish her thought. "I like you." she finally said, giggling after as she blushed again and looked down, reaching up to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear again. "You're... nice. And... better, than anyone I've met..." she added, almost unable to look up at him as she said it. The girl wasn't even sure why she was embarrassed to say these things, and yet she had never really been the sort to not speak her mind on any matter.

At first Yozei felt a little awkward and nervous after making his comment. It had been rather out of the blue and he knew there were probably a thousand better approaches to letting a girl know that you liked them but he had went ahead and complimented her just like that and hopefully that would be enough. He was blushing too as much as he hated that fact. Why was dealing with girls so nerve racking? His heart was beating so fast he was sure that it could be heard. All in all it seemed to be going pretty well though. She didn’t freak out or tell him that she didn’t like him like that or anything so that was a good sign. When she nudged him the young teenager even felt a little comforted. “You’re welcome. You deserve to hear it” he added with growing confidence. Who knows, maybe the kid had it in him to be a charmer after all? Perhaps one day.
The auburn haired boy chuckled as he too smelled the burning meat, watching as his date of his sorts quickly removed the few pieces from the grill. His own portion had been sitting on his plate for a few minutes now and honestly he was hungry though had almost forgot about eating with how enthralled in Suzume he had become. Once more he would pleasantly glance in her direction, capturing every moment with his cerulean blue eyes which seemed to sparkle and shimmer when the light caught them just right. Turning his attention to his food the son of the Hokage would make quick work of the half dozen or so strips of meat that he had cooked thus far. The taste was unreal, juicy, flavorful, and cooked to about medium after sitting for some time. A few gulps of water and a mouthful or two of bok choy and he would switch to a different type of steak strip, placing another half dozen of the ones marinated in a smoky barbeque sauce now.
He tilted his head as Suzume started on something. Evidently she was rather direct and perhaps braver than him though in the moment that was a quality he appreciated. The cards were on the table now and the reasons to be nervous seemed to be dissipating. “I like you too” he admitted, placing his left hand tenderly on her shoulder. She tucked her hair back again, the pesky stuff seeming to frequently fall in her face, missing a strand he couldn’t pass up such a golden and perhaps intentional opportunity for him to make a move of some sort. Sliding in slightly Yozei ran a finger across her cheek catching the stray hair or two and resting his hand at the back of her neck now. “You haven’t met very many people have you?” he replied slyly though he knew that he actually was a pretty good kid. He held strong morals, convictions and a great respect for others. Moreover he was slow to judge regardless of someone’s situation as evident by how he hadn’t cared who Suzume’s father was, he cared about who she was and thus far it was someone he was growing to appreciate quite a lot. “I’m glad I met you Suzume” he stated, smiling at her as he slid in until their legs were touching. For a moment it looked like he might kiss her though he slid his arm over her instead.

As Yozei reached out and touched her cheek, moving a stray hair or two out of her face and resting his hand on her neck, Suzume simply closed her eyes. It wasn't that she was expecting anything, not even a kiss, she simply allowed herself a moment to enjoy the touch. The smile came back to her lips as Yozei shifted so that they were now sitting more together, legs touching, and he slid his arm over her. There was still a blush as she looked up, she hadn't expected a kiss, but some part of her hoped for it. But she turned her eyes back to what was in front of her and put a bit more on the grill. She hadn't eaten a lot yet, but Suzume never did, and she found herself already getting full.
"So... where to after this...?" she asked quietly, chuckling as she looked up at him. "Any idea where they're going to put me tonight to sleep?" she added, suddenly realizing she had no idea yet. She only knew tomorrow she would be forced to return to Kenji and her life outside the village.

He felt almost frozen in place with his arm around her, it was a pleasant sort of sensation, he didn’t want to break the feeling of being so close to her, and yet he wasn’t entirely sure what to do from there. With his free hand the boy kept himself busy arranging and removing a few last strips of beef. There were sure to be some leftovers and no doubt they wouldn’t last until the morning if his dad ended up coming home late and rummaging through the fridge.
With the last groups of strips almost cooked it seemed Suzume was also getting full and thinking ahead. “You’ll see, you said you wanted to see the village, there’s a good place for that.” He smiled before signalling to the waiter to get the bill. His face grew more serious as he considered what where they might place her for the night. “Actually I’m not sure. I’d hope they’d let you stay in a proper room or something. Maybe if I put a good word in with my dad he’ll let you spend the night at our place. What safer place than under the Hokage’s watchful eye?” he considered. Sure some would be concerned that she could gain access to crucial information or something like that but as far as he was aware Takeo never brought critical documents home, leaving those sort of duties for the office and otherwise keeping information under guard and the most sensitive files locked in an ANBU vault somewhere.
When the waiter came around Yozei paid the man with a hearty tip and had the food packed up. This meant that reluctantly the auburn haired boy had to remove his arm from around his date. Leading her outside they were back out in the well decorated streets. Vendors and stalls tended to be open fairly late and even into the evening streets were busy and lively. The sun was only beginning to dip and yet the atmosphere was far from diminished, in fact Yozei tended to enjoy the evenings of Konoha better than the day, the latter most shinobi spent training or off on missions though it was when the sun went down that shinobi could fully enjoy all that the village had to offer. As they meandered through the streets towards their destination Yozei noted several stalls selling various merchandise, accessories and even souvenirs. “If you see anything that catches your eye let me know” he offered. He had no idea what kind of tastes the girl had but surely someone as curious as her wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to take something home with her, a memory of the village few in her situation would ever have the privilege of laying eyes on.

Suzume nibbled on a grilled vegetable as Yozei spoke, and smiled when he mentioned the idea of her staying with him. "That would be nice..." she remarked. "And I can see your village approving that, it certainly sounds secure." she added, suddenly blushing as another thought occurred to her, and she quickly tried to shove it to the back of her mind. She was honestly grateful when the server came by to give them the bill, if only because it was a distraction that allowed her to get her own blush under control once more.
She was happy when Yozei lead her outside and along the walkway. Her hand slipped into his easily, fingers intertwined and this time it didn't even bring a blush to her cheeks. She felt at home in this moment, comfortable in a way she hadn't really thought possible, or even realized she had been missing. She saw the sun was just beginning to dip and the colors were lighting up the sky. She felt as if she had never seen anything like it before, or perhaps she had just never paid such attention to it. "This place is beautiful..." she remarked quietly. "I wish I didn't have to leave it." she added mildly, though she knew that could never happen even if she had the chance to stay. Her father would make it his mission to find her, and she knew all too well that could end so very badly for the village she was already falling in love with.
They walked between market stalls and Suzume's eyes wandered over many things. Some of them were very pretty, some obviously cheaply made. A grin crossed her lips as Yozei told her to pick something out and the girl suddenly realized she had no idea what to pick out. She moved towards a stand with several hand carved items and looked them over, still having no idea what she would like. What could possibly symbolize her visit to the village of Konoha and everything it had meant to her? Even Koto seemed curious about what was going on about her and the little weasel stuck her nose out of Suzume's bag to sniff the air and turn her little white head to look at the stall.
Suzume's eyes came to something simple, a small smirk on her lips as she found it. It was a simple pair of bracelets, sold together. The beads were wood, one painted a deep brown and the other a deep green. The colors were natural and each individual bead carved. It didn't seem to be an expensive item, and the pair went together. 'Meant to be worn together but... huh. Maybe something for both of us to remember? I could take one and he could take the other?' But this caused that blush to quickly come back to her cheeks as she silently wondered, 'Would he even want such a thing? Maybe he doesn't like me that much...'

The auburn-haired boy had thought he had noticed the girl blushing at the thought of staying in his home but he tried not to dwell on it. He couldn’t let himself get too carried away in thoughts and possibilities, there was much that could happen or conversely might not happen. Instead it was best to focus on the present and the company he could enjoy. He hadn’t anticipated her grabbing his hand though it felt almost natural when she did. Yozei was beginning to get quite used to her company and it saddened him knowing in the back of his mind that this would likely be their first and only date. It filled him with great joy to witness the way she fell in love with the village, in the same way he had not long ago. “It really is” he uttered softly, as the soft red glow of the lights flickered across his cerulean blue eyes. “There’s so much I want to show you, to have you experience. I could spend all night and well into the day with you and it wouldn’t be enough” he admitted. Konoha was the largest of all the shinobi villages and possessed by far the greatest population. It had stood for hundreds of years and maintained a rich and diverse background of clans and culture.
It was clear by the way Yozei spoke of the village that he had a profound appreciation and respect for it. To him Konoha was a symbol of love, friendship and freedom. He wished that more outsiders could visit or even take up residency. If Suzume wasn’t the daughter of a S-ranked criminal he was sure that his father would have allowed her to stay. Yozei was glad when Suzume showed interest in taking home a souvenir, he wondered curiously what she might pick. Surely something that embodied some feeling or connection she felt to the village. Before long she had gravitated towards a collection of handcrafted items, a strong choice. The Senju were the founding clan of the village and many dedicated their lives to wood-crafting, carpentry and other related skills. It was a fundamental trade within the village.
It took Yozei a moment or two to realize which item had drawn her attention. Following her gaze he smiled as the understanding dawned on him. ‘Bracelets?’ The young teenager moved closer to the stand, reaching out to inspect the pair. “I like them” he stated simply before meeting her eyes and seeming to read her mind, without thinking he let go of her hand just long enough to slide the deep brown one over his wrist before gently holding her forearm and with the other sliding the green one over her hand. “Alright then, it’s settled. Good choice” he said with a bright smile. His fingers lingered against hers and he moved in close. “It looks good on you” he complimented, meeting her eyes. “And now we definitely won’t forget each other” he stated, as if he were making a promise. He knew now that he really did mean something to her, he was somebody she wanted to remember and so was she to him. If she seemed receptive to it he would kiss her gently, his other hand firmly placed at her waist. He would do his best to hide his own nerves though his heart pounded in his chest and he felt scared that he might make things awkward.

A smile and a blush remained on Suzume's face as Yozei slipped the bracelet on first himself, and then one on her. Her eyes only left his face as she moved her other hand over to finger the design on the beads. But a moment later and her eyes were back on his. When he stated that they wouldn't forget one another, her blush only deepened. "Promise?" she asked quietly, looking up at him as she felt like her breath was catching in her chest. "Promise you won't forget me?" she asked again, only as she realized what he intended. Honestly she felt just as nervous as he did, but she tried to stifle the feeling and took a partial step forward so there was almost no space between them and lifted her head to accept the kiss.
If her blush could have deepened again, it would have as their lips parted. She bit her lip a moment, looking at Yozei as an idea came to mind. "After tomorrow, I don't know if I'll get to see you again..." she said quietly. "But I can try to write... I know I can find a merchant or someone able to carry the letters. I'll find a way." she promised, her words a whisper as some part of her was almost scared someone might overhear.
'I've never met anyone like him before... I won't let that go...' she thought to herself.

For a first kiss it had went far better than he could have anticipated. The nerves quickly washed away as their lips met and he held her close. They stayed that way for a few brief seconds though it felt like much longer and as their faces parted, Yozei felt awash with happiness and renewed confidence. “I promise” he stated assuredly. He knew now that some way he would find her again, whatever that meant to get to that point. His cerulean blue eyes seemed mesmerized with her, this yellow eyed, raven haired girl that had ignited a passion and fervor in him that he had never experienced. It was too soon to say for sure but to the young teenager it felt almost like love, the feeling being only comparable to how he felt about the village itself but somehow stronger and more raw.
Suzume was wise to whisper, though neither of them could perceive their pursuer the pair were being watched by an ANBU operative. Luckily the masked man was more concerned about losing track of the girl or watching for any aggressive action than he was about listening in on every word between a pair of teenagers on what seemed to have turned into a date. Yozei’s expression grew almost somber for a moment as he considered never seeing the girl again but a spark came to his eyes once more as she proclaimed that she would send letters to him if he wished to keep in contact. “Okay” he seemed to exhale in relief, smiling with a content look. Turning back to the merchant he would pay the man before reaching for the girl’s hand once more. “Come on, we’ve got to hurry before it gets too late” he realized suddenly, leading her away at a quick pace. He had a feeling she could keep up, he was faster than many of his peers but like him she was also the child of an S-Rank calibre shinobi, surely she was a capable fighter and skilled physically.
Leading her through the village, awash with glowing lights set against the setting sun they soon approached a large hill which after some time led to a marked pathway. It was one of the more indirect routes to get to the top of the Hokage monument but he didn’t want to assume that she could utilize chakra and certainly he didn’t want the ANBU escort taking note of such capabilities should they directly scale the mountainside. Emerging through some trees the path opened into a clearing of sorts, some grass which shifted to dirt and stone as it led out towards the cliff-face which overlooked the village. The faces of each of the seventeen Hokage in the villages storied history were all carved onto the expansive cliff that served as the backdrop for most of the village. “This is where I wanted to take you. If you only have one evening in Konoha you have to see the village from up here” he assured her. Moving towards the edge he knew she would marvel at all the lights and the sheer size of the village, it stretched for miles, countless buildings, streets and expansive training grounds along the outskirts, rivers winded throughout various parts of the village and trees sprouted up from every street block.

Suzume felt his hand close over hers and smiled as she turned and followed him, running to keep up with him. It wasn't a hardship, it didn't seem to be anyway as she kept up with him on that run. She was blissfully unaware that they were being chaperoned and followed of course. Her focus was entirely on Yozei. "Too late for what?" she asked as they ran along. Even if he didn't answer, she went with him, grinning as they ran along the path. It was fun, and she couldn't help thinking that he was planning some kind of surprise for her, and what he wanted to show her was more than a little impressive. Her grin disappeared but she couldn't help feeling impressed as they stepped towards the edge and she looked out across the village. She didn't know whose faces were carved into the wall, the view of the village was impressive to say the least.
"This place is beautiful..." she said quietly, staring out across the lights of the entire city as darkness set in. Yet even in the dark, the city shone. 'I wish I could stay...' she thought to herself, turning to look at Yozei and stepping closer to him again. Her eyes locked onto his as she couldn't help a chuckle. "If either of us had a different father... or at least if I did..." she admitted, sighing as she leaned her forehead against his.
Her hands moved to his, one trailing until her fingers touched the wooden beads of the bracelet he had just bought. "Do they ever let you leave the village?" she whispered. "We could meet again that way... just maybe..."

As expected Suzume kept up with without difficulty, it made him wonder what else she was capable of, though combat was far from his mind. He would only smirk mischievously as she asked what they were hurrying for. “You’ll see” he replied simply, a grin of his own emerging as he realized how much fun he was having leading her through the village. There had been many moments throughout the evening where it had slipped his mind that they would be under supervision. Even when he remembered however he hardly seemed to care. Normally Yozei was a model student and a respectful son though when it came to Suzume he didn’t care in the slightest what his father would think.
The pair emerged at the top of the cliff, hand in hand and slowly they approached the edge together. “I thought you’d like it” he commented, smiling boyishly. He couldn’t get over how genuinely happy he felt in her presence. Part of him wished he could leave the village with her, put behind his royal bloodline, even the path of the shinobi and just follow her. Nothing was ever that simple though, not for individuals of their ancestry. Her own thoughts seemed to mirror his, “I know” he breathed softly, he wished with all of his heart that circumstances could be different, that he could truly get to know her and that they could have a real chance at falling in love and being together. One hand still in hers the other rose to run through her hair, memorizing the feeling, even closing his eyes for a moment and just appreciating her scent, the sound of her breathing and the closeness of her leaning against him. These scenes would replay themselves a hundred times over in his dreams and he doubted anything else would ever compare to this foreign beauty whom he was destined to watch slip through his fingers.
Suzume’s hand slipped out of his and then both converged on his right hand, tracing the beads on his wrist as his fingers parted with her silky black hair. ‘No, I can’t give up. We have a plan!’ he reminded himself. He wouldn’t lose her without a fight. “Not without an escort, I’ll be going on missions soon but my Sensei is a Bannin, slipping away from her wont be easy…” he admitted reluctantly. “If I can rank up quickly though I’ll have more freedom” he explained, his mind racing for possible solutions and then a few ideas came to mind. “My mother travels a lot though, maybe I’ll be allowed to take a trip back to the palace sometime or accompany my dad if he needs to leave for some kind of peace treaty” he suggested. He was grasping at straws here but surely there had to be some way of seeing her. “We’ll keep in contact to start and if there’s a way to see each other we’ll be ready” he reassured, whispering lowly.

Suzume listened quietly, and she had to admit her hopes were starting to fall as he listed impossibilities. Even the possibilities he mentioned seemed like long shots. The girl took a deep breath, gripping Yozei's hand in both of hers as she nodded at his last statement. "We'll figure it out." she assured him. "When I got here by accident, we were staying at a nearby farming town called Dosae. Maybe I can find a way to leave a message for you there, or a way to find me, or... something." She chuckled nervously, her mind working overtime as she tried to piece something together and finally sighed.
"I guess its going to take more than tonight for me to figure something out..." she remarked, her mind working over time. "I'll have to write you and tell you when I can." she leaned forward, resting her head on Yozei's shoulder as she let out another sigh, her mind still working on the issue. It was even working on ideas for codes to use in the letters to tell Yozei her intent, in case anything was found or intercepted.
It was a lot of work, and the girl was already tired, practically nodding off as she leaned against him.

The auburn-haired boy nodded, he knew realistically the chances were bleak but if they both maintained hope surely it was possible. “Yeah” he agreed softly. “We will” he added with a smile. His bright cerulean blue eyes were like looking into a tranquil lake, water so clear you could see to the bottom. ‘Dosae’ he repeated the name in his mind, yeah that could work. “We can worry about the details later, for now let’s relax and enjoy the view” he stated, taking her by the hand and leading her down to the stone heads, even scooping her up as he leaped down to them. They would sit atop the head of his fathers likeness staring out at the village and snuggling up to one another. “My dad used to take me here sometimes when I first came to the village, it has become my favorite spot to just think and remind me what I fight for. Now when I come here I’ll also think of you” he admitted, playing with her hair as he kissed her forehead with her in his arms.
They would stay like that for some time until the sun set behind the mountains and the last shreds of light slipped through the trees. Even then Yozei would simply form a set of hand seals and raise his arm towards the sky, firing off a sphere of Katon chakra which hovered above them for several minutes and basking them in a warm red glow. Within minutes the ANBU operative would emerge from hiding explaining to Yozei that it was time to go back to the office. Whisked away they would arrive back at the headquarters of the Hokage where Yozei would plead with his father to allow Suzume to stay the night at their place to which the man would reluctantly agree and head back to the house with the pair. Though they would be instructed to sleep in separate rooms inevitably the two would end up sneaking in to see each other and fall asleep curled up with each other, an innocent night that would perhaps lead to so much more in the future.
