Many a fledgling Genin had experienced nightmares of Terūin Hayashi, and for many reasons. Most were probably due to his appearance, battle-scarred and fearsome as he was, but some were surely more mundane; simply put, he wasn’t the handsome young prodigy that boys idolised and girls swooned over. There was also his dreaded reputation to consider, that of running his students ragged, dismissing them back to the academy - or worse - and being one of the strictest taskmasters that Konoha could unleash upon its unsuspecting graduates. It’s fair to say that no academy student liked the idea of ending up with him as a team leader, and never-mind the fact that the aged Jounin had mentored countless elite shinobi in his time, not the least of which was the current Hokage himself.

And yet, as Hayashi walked steadily through the village’s innermost training grounds and watched groups of dewy-eyed Genin freeze as they saw him - each probably hoping beyond hope that he wouldn’t be the one to stop at their waiting group - he smiled. He knew his reputation; but he also knew that he’d never failed to turn the Genin he chose into real shinobi, worthy of the title. He was harsh, at times, but fair, and he knew it was better to send a child home crying if they were not capable. That was preferable to sending them home in a box when they got in over their heads and situations turned against them.

He paused as he neared the entrance to the fifth training grounds, wondering who - if anyone - would be waiting for him within. He’d selected three hopefuls and sent direct summons to each, sparse in information but clear in orders; but he knew none of the three well enough to predict their decisions. Once committed, they would find this life tough, so he hoped each considered their options before arriving to be his next generation of students. Hard to believe these will be the fifth group… he thought, and the all-too-familiar spark of curiosity lit again in his mind. I wonder what sort of hidden talents they’ll show, in time? Taking a breath and clearing his mind of distractions, he rounded the corner and entered the fifth training ground…

Long were the days of practice and preparation but now came the hour of action. Burdened by the weight of a life beyond what he would experience today Yῡku put on his best attempt at being happy; hoping that the lie he told himself, might just manifest into the truth if given enough positivity to feed on. Only there was just one complication in his idea, ants were constantly crawling up and down his leg and well...it wasn't exactly Lilith's touch. Shaking them away would have been easy enough but he would not wish going against Eiyasu's instruction, the elder Senju had forewarned that the Shinobi world was filled with many dangers and that only the foolish would be so sloppy as to let themselves be discovered. (I've been out here for almost an hour now...maybe I jumped the gun a bit). A grievous understatement, between two trees straight ahead hidden with the foliage was a rigged Shuriken shooter - designed of wood...and rope of course but functional for the task meant for it. Affixed to the pulley were wooden Shuriken that would not be released until he cut the rope; and to the left just beyond a partitioned log and its twin siblings existed another shoooter loaded with Kunai knives.

At Li's request, he had agreed to work on his trap setting after a failed attempt at catching a large deer during one of their camping trips - the failure had caused them to go without food for the whole night but Li advised him not to take it to heart. However, that wasn't the only reason why Yῡku decided to spring a trap; Eiyasu had been there when that strange bird showed up and delivered the message, someone had wanted him to show up bright and early in the morning to be grouped with others who he also would not know and then from there they were supposed to go on a mission. At least, that was what he gathered from it. While it may very well have been possible that this was in fact an official ninja summon he couldn't ignore the potential attempt at harming his younger brother. After all, it was no secret that their household had a troubled history and often times when in public, the villagers would make their private thoughts...public. Being the son of an executed convict placed even Yῡku in way of passionate villagers sometimes, Li usually dealt with them but now their little brother would be out on his own. The dangers were limitless...and both were concerned.

"Come to think of it, I don't know who I'm supposed to be looking out for..." Scratching his head, the boy suddenly stood from his hiding spot and lept into the clearing head making sure to dust himself off in the process. It may not have been safe to just come out in the open but for now, it seemed like the best option. Besides, if anything were askew he could always put his traps to use and retreat. Walking over to the fallen log and taking a seat, Yῡku inhaled and then exhaled slowly. "Did they decide not to show?" Abruptly, his eyes cut rightward as someone rounded the corner.

The night to the morning was long, Touka was finally getting placed in a different team, a team willing to aid eachother and not isolate others, or so she thought, her eyes were tired and she turned around in the bed within her compound, slowly opening them up to look at the time, the time was 8:00, yet Touka did not register this, she merely turned around in the bed again as she delved into her light sleep again, blankets snugly wrapped around her.

Should be fine to sleep a bit more... the genin thought to herself before she finally realized what the time was, nearly jumping out of bed as her eyes were wide "...Eight, Seriously?! This never happens!" she stated to herself before leaping out of bed to get herself ready for the eventual encounter with her new team, fashionably late. She'd put on her ordinary albeit tighter black konoha shirt followed by the pants, while also grabbing ahold of her coat again, she'd shudder somewhat at the spot, it would seem it was not entirely dry yet, Touka removed the coat and made her way to the kitchen area where she'd grab a sandwich, eating it up quickly as she ran towards the training area, climbing up on the nearby roof of a building as the streets were currently getting busy and Touka had to get there sooner rather than later, her foresty green eyes simply staring ahead with the brown hair flowing behind her as she ran.

Finally the genin reached the area stated on her scroll as a young Genin appeared in her eyes, raising a brow briefly she could not exactly place who it was just yet, as she then finally jumped out of the woods and landed on her sandals, staring ahead, she'd rest her hands on her waist, she'd freeze somewhat on the spot upon getting closer but it loosened up as she realized her brother wasn't around anymore, and the kid was far too young to be him, and as she remembered, her brother did not have the eerily scarlet eyes.

She'd approach the Genin on Fallen Log as she waved her hand casually towards him. "Yo, you got the scroll as well?" she'd take a quick look around herself, albeit her back was facing the corner where Hayashi may come from, she had her focus on the team member in front of her for the moment, the young Touka's attire was slightly different from what people may be used to, it looked a lot like the standard attire you receive from Konohagakure Shinobi, yet wrapped around her waist was a genin headband with a line going through it, she didn't seem awfully concerned about said band though, upon her back rested a Tanto, not hidden by the Coat she had left at home this time, while not giving Yuku much time she quickly threw another question at him "So, what's the will of fire?" she'd grin somewhat, possibly giving him enough time to finally process what Touka had been saying, her appearance definitely pointed her to Senju entirely, possibly recognizable as the sister to the missing-nin Senju.

With one foot hovering in the entrance of the training grounds, Hayashi hesitated. One glance was enough to show him that the area - mostly open field, with some scattered foliage and scarred rocks here and there - was empty. Annoyingly so. He turned around and sighed heavily, shaking his head. What were the chances that the heavens had aligned and there were in fact three dedicated and talented shinobi already hiding in the field, waiting for him? Next to none, of course; it was far more likely that not one of them had bothered getting out bed yet, or was intentionally dawdling in the hope of being “fashionably late”. He’d been hoping to get a moment to see his prospective students together before they saw him, but that wouldn’t happen if he just strolled in and sat there waiting. Instead, he began calmly walking away, curving around the path that ran around the outside of the training grounds until he came across a suitably tall and well-canopied tree. It looked like a perfect place to rest, watch, and wait, so he hopped up into a shaded bough and, making sure he was concealed to the casual observer, sat back and did so. If anyone was hiding in the field, he’d test their patience from here; and if they were just late… Well then, he’d have to test their nerve instead.

And yet, almost as soon as he’d seated himself, a flicker of movement from the field revealed one of his future students. One of the boys, he realised, Senju Yῡku. Hayashi was surprised to realise that one of the three had in fact been there, and tucked the welcome knowledge away for later as a point in the lad’s favour. The boy seemed alert to the point of visible cautiousness; while that wasn’t strictly necessary here, he couldn’t know what he’d been summoned for, so a measure of wariness was just as commendable as his promptness. On top of that, if the personnel files of Yῡku’s two brothers were any accurate gauge, he wouldn’t be one to slack off and let himself get carried by the rest of the team. With this in mind, Hayashi continued to watch and wait until the next student, if any, arrived - though eventually he’d have to go down now that one was present.

Not too long afterwards he noticed a second figure approach at speed. That was both good and bad - it was unfortunate, particularly for her, that she was late, but slightly redeeming in that she was clearly concerned about that fact and was hurrying to make up lost time. She stopped nearby Yῡku and the two apparently began talking pleasantly while Hayashi watched from his hidden vantage. Side by side, the clan resemblance between them was astonishing; the slight tan to their skin, the similar shade of brown hair, and a familiarity that spoke of some small kinship beyond that of their similar ages and heights. The sight of them reminded the Jounin of his old friend, Senju Toshiaki - the very man who’d set Hayashi on this path of mentoring students - and he smiled at the feeling of warmth in the memory.

Now that more than one was present the time was right to make his own appearance. He moved to get up and descent from his vantage point, but the memory of Toshiaki lingered in his head. One of the first pieces of advice the Senju had given Hayashi was how to get to know the inner workings of new people. ’You can learn a lot about a person by the way they treat their inferiors,’ the man had said. At the time Hayashi hadn’t quite listened, but now, with decades of hindsight, he knew the truth in the words. Smiling, he placed his hands together in a blurringly fast set of seals and initiated a transformation jutsu before he entered the training grounds properly. When the other two caught sight of him, all they’d see would be a young child, perhaps ten, who was running up to them with an excited grin.

“Hey! Hey! Are you guys ninja?!” The child-Hayashi would ask as he skidded to a stop beside Yῡku and Touka, “that’s so cool!!” He hopped up and down with excitement, trying to mimic how his son had acted a few years prior when they’d first told him he could go to the academy to learn. “I’m learning too! I’m gunna be a ninja too! Just like you! Hey, do some ninjery stuff!” he splayed his arms wide as if mimicking a blast of ninjutsu, then laughed. At the same time he examined the two Genin closer, and quickly took in the oddities of each. Given that he was trying to act like an annoying under-classman, he voiced them immediately and carelessly.

“Hey! What’s up with your eyes?!” He levelled a finger at Yῡku and leaned in, squinting as if he was trying to see through a disguise. “Are you evil or something?” But before the boy could get a word in to reply, Hayashi had turned his accusatory finger on Touka instead. “Why do you have two headbands? Does that mean you’re better than him?” He took a step forward and leant in to examine the headband at the girl’s waist that bore the defaced symbol of the village. “Hey, isn’t that what bad guys wear? Hey, are you a traitor then?! But don’t you love Konoha?! I don't get it!” Doing his best to annoy the two older ninja in the way that only an excitable child could, Hayashi continued to pester them until one responded.

After completing the needed handseals, the user of this technique will be able to alter their physical appearance to match that of another person. By consistently emitting chakra throughout their body, the user is able to keep their appearance adjusted at the cost of their stamina draining over time. As this technique is quite strenuous to uphold, experienced shinobi may see more clearly through this delusive disguise. This technique lasts for a number of posts equal to that of the user's stamina.

At the sound of approaching footsteps Yūku shifted in his seat and faced the source where he'd heard the noise. To his surprise, it was the girl he'd met before. Like himself, she was a Senju - their blood and being forged of mother Earth. But also like him, she had been predisposed to a rougher deck of cards than most. Word got around the compound fairly quickly of any misdoings or dishonorable acts pertaining to the Clan and while he hadn't exactly wished to pry Yūku knew about the girl's brother. Despite this he did not look at her with contempt or disdain, Yūku seemed perfectly fine in her company; though he wondered now that he had the chance to look at her, how she was able to maintain such a vibrant Yellow Aura despite her circumstances. Deep within the chambers of his mind a hollow voice echoed, as if bouncing off the walls: What a vibe.

When she spoke to him, her voice sounded of the sweetest symphony and Yūku welcomed the presence of peace that she brought along with her. In this moment he wondered if she could sing with a voice as soft and comforting as the kind she possessed and if she could, what kind of stories would her heart tell? "So I wasn't the only one to get that weird letter...What if this person is targeting Senju?" As he spoke Yūku fiddled around in a brown satchel pouch that he'd brought with him to store the bulk of his inventory. From it, he pulled out a scroll and held it out for the girl to examine it. "There's no mention of the sender's identity or even a description to go by. Just a time and location with a sealing stamp that could be fake for all we know....Konoha is the last place I would expect to find trouble but this doesn't seem right." Yūku was even more troubled by the fact that he'd shown up an hour early (6:30) and still hadn't been able to find traces of anything out of the ordinary. According to the way shadows had bent around certain trees Yūku reasoned that it must have been at least (8:30) two hours from the time he'd originally got there and no one had shown up.

To the contrary, without having a way to identify what he was supposed to be looking for Yūku realized that he was a sitting duck. In fact, it was the second time he'd come to the same conclusion but for some reason the girl didn't seem to share his concern. Why wasn't she concerned? Did she know something about all of this? "It doesn't bother you that we could be stumbling blindly into a trap?" As he spoke, his eyes wandered taking in the extensive view of the training grounds. Compared to the other posts the location was further out and away from the village; coming from the village there were several smaller dirt roads leading to various other posts but only one led to the Fifth training grounds - the direction Touka had come from. Anyone else would have had to have been extremely particular about their route navigating the forest behind the two to avoid what dangers lay waiting for them.

It'd been for that reason that Yūku found it mighty funny that a young boy would just pop up out of the blue in an area that hadn't been detailed....to anyone. He had his suspicions that true nature of the message wasn't just to provide a location but only now did he finally confirm that theory. Touka, who was happy and openly displaying that happiness - was shrouded in a deep yellow aura while the boy who had also seemed to be jumping with enthusiasm, only emitted shades of Grey. To Yūku, this discovery was fascinating because for as long as he could remember, everyone had always glowed some kind of color even animals (part of the reason why he'd failed in hunting with Eiyasu was because the game emitted a orange Aura) but the boy did not.

From this, because he couldn't determine the true emotional state of the boy Yūku believed that the child had been faking his feelings but didn't understand why he would do such a thing, after all they hardly even knew each other. More attention had been drawn to the fact that for whatever reason, the boy seemed to try and go out of his way to keep up a conversation despite most parents often advising their children even in the Leaf to be wary of strangers. No, there was something very, very wrong about all of this. "You want to be a ninja huh little man well that's just great! But there are so many dangers to be considerate of, like not knowing where your enemy could come from or being faced with an intense mission. It's definitely the road less traveled for some people," said Yūku with a half curve of the lips forming a loose smile, "Yep. Nice and dangerous."

No details had been provided about the training grounds other than the fact that it was a training ground and Yūku would be meeting the other members of his squad there. Given the scarcity of the note it was hard to believe that a Shinobi meeting ground would be the kind of place where people without reasonable accommodations or escorts could reach so easily. Touka had a scroll meaning that she was supposed to be there and so did Yūku but the out of place ten year old asking a lot of probing questions lacked the scroll, for some reason did not emit an aura and strayed way too far from the village to just be considered a passerby - no, he'd told on himself. At the boy's age, he should have been in the Academy right now as they spoke if he really were 'gonna learn' as he so put it; something that Yūku would not have if not for the fact that he'd only just graduated himself, making the kid disguise much harder to sell. At least, he wasn't buying it. He would not know for sure if whether or not Touka had been duped by the masqurade and wouldn't risk blowing a chance to learn more information by filling her in.

Fortunately, he didn't have to talk much because the 'boy' kept up with questions but it was clear that getting a word in would be a task all its own. Besides, Yūku couldn't explain the strangeness of his eyes...even if he wanted to.

Touka did appear rather careless in her exterior demeanour but behind her visage hid the truth, one that Yuku certainly could tell, knowing full well about the taint her brother added to the clan, but at least she wasn't the only one with closer kin doing questionable acts, she regarded Yuku briefly as he did not answer her question about the will of fire.

Touka would eventually reach for the scroll held out by the genin as she regarded its content. "Heh, I got the same scroll myself." she stated, her voice made it seem she wasn't overly careful of her whomever could be ambushing them, she'd offer the letter back to the genin. "Who knows, maybe it's the hokage who wrote this letter to us, heh, don't worry about it too much, we're two now, if there's two more we'd be a team,
could be that as well."
she added rather carelessly but it was apparant that the young genin had given the scroll some thought.

Touka would eventually shake her head at what Yuku asked "Not likely, we're two genin I don't see what people would gain from creating a trap just for the two of us." she reassured Yuku before eventually she heard the voice of a young boy, perking a brow as she turned around to face the boy as she smiled towards him, approaching the young boy she'd seek to ruffle his head somewhat. "I bet you'd be an awesome ninja! Hehehe!" she laughed somewhat as she then went quiet upon the next part of his question, she was ironically enough only wearing one headband and it was her brother's headband, around her waist. "Oh no, I do love Konoha but there's more to it than just..." she'd remove the defaced headband before holding it out towards the boy.

"It's not my headband, it belongs to someone else who's very close to me, I intend on giving back the headband to him, they are after all symbols of what we have achieved and what we represent, but that doesn't mean you're a bad guy just because it looks a bit worn and damaged." she said, smiling with the entirety of her face as she then leant back up, tying the headband around her forehead. "Try not to judge a person based on the colort of their eyes, what's your name?" she eventually asked the inquisitive boy.

From behind trees a few meters from the gathering of genin, and jonin in disguise, would shoot out out a wave of jutsu. A repeating pattern of three ninjutsu: Bright Bolt, Fireball, and Sun Ball. A thin bolt of lightning, a flying fireball, and a soaring emerald and royal purple spheres of light flowed through the sky, repeating so much that they made a cone of various colors. As they all collided, it created a strange mix of smoke, light, and electricity crackling along the cloud.

Then there was motion in the clouds, as if something was moving through it. The clouds began to widen and the front began to bulge as whatever it was forced its way through. Bursting forth from the cloud, came a boy with electricity crackling around him. The boy was fair skinned with blonde hair and a well toned body. His white shirt wrinkled slightly and exposed even more of his abs than usual, and the blade tie he wore loosely around his chest ruffled in the wind as he fell. His pants were a bright purple and held up by a pure white belt, and as he fell, if one looked closely they could see his ears had several piercings, and he even had a ring on the middle finger of his left hand. This all combined with his bright royal purple eyes made him stand out even more than he meant to. As his foot made contact with the tree below him, he ran down using his chakra to keep him from loosing speed. But once he got to the last branch, his foot slipped causing him to tumble onto the ground.

The boy wouldn't let this ruin his entrance however. FAR too much work had gone into it! The setting the seals one of the better clan members had made for him, getting positioned just right, purposefully waiting an extended period of time to make sure it was a surprise. He had put in more than his share of time, so he had to make this look purposeful. As he hit the ground, he'd roll himself onto his side as quick as he could, propping his head up with one arm. Resting his hand on his cheek he'd smirk at the three people infront of him. "Awai Michio has arrived. Hope I didn't scare any of you."

The disguised Hayashi looked briefly to Yūku as the boy spoke, but otherwise kept his attention shifting between the two Genin in the overly-eager manner of a child. Without showing it outwardly he weighed the boy’s reaction; Yūku seemed intelligent enough to have realised something amiss about the situation, but instead of following through with that feeling, he’d instead gone along with it. That would’ve been fine but for the way he spoke; with that half-sneer, it almost seemed like a threat... Perhaps he wasn’t that intelligent after all.

Touka, on the other hand, quickly earned herself a few marks for her good attitude. She was quick to laugh and openly friendly, and beyond that even stopped to explain herself to what she presumably thought was an innocent but curious wannabe-ninja. Hayashi knew of the situation with her brother, of course, but the girl’s own feelings about the matter weren’t included in any of the official paperwork; he tucked the knowledge of her plans away for later. He made himself look abashed as she lectured him, but knew her words to be friendly.

“T-Teruin…” He stammered when she asked his name, and then lifted his head to stare into Touka’s eyes. For a fleeting moment, something that could have been approval flickered across the child-Hayashi’s face, before he abruptly ended the transformation and vanished in a puff of smoke. In the young boy’s place, squatting down so that he was the same height and still staring into Touka’s eyes, was the fully grown jounin, scarred and as imposing as he’d ever been. “Teruin Hayashi”, he finished, his voice deep, gravelly, and serious. “Your new Sensei.”

Nearby, a child fell from the sky. On the inside Hayashi wanted to laugh, being equal parts surprised and amused by the excessively dramatic entrance, but on the outside he didn’t appear to react at all. He purposefully didn’t even glance towards Michio as the lad “landed” and announced himself. Instead, the jounin simply rose and walked several paces away from the group before spinning back around to size the three Genin up and down. This time he didn’t stop to consider the minor details that his child-transformation had picked up on, but instead gauged their postures, their builds, and above all their reactions to both his and Michio’s unexpected appearances. The timings, while wholly unplanned, had actually worked out brilliantly - like a theatre play, Michio’s arrival could have distracted Touka and Yuku for long enough so that they might have missed his own transformation back from wide-eyed child to scarred jounin.

“All right! Line up and stand straight!” He barked, allowing himself to slip effortlessly into the role of a drill instructor for the time being. A certain sharpness to a voice and commanding aura typically caused people to obey before they realised what they were doing, and he hoped that the three genin before him were no exception. Assuming they obeyed, he would continue.

“Each of you have been personally selected and summoned for inauguration into a new shinobi team. My team. I’m sorry to see that only one of you bothered to get here on time.” He glanced to Yūku and nodded almost imperceptibly. ”I’ll remember that.

“The three of you have shown a deal of potential, but none are without your flaws. It will be my job to refine those flaws and forge you into something greater than any one of you could become as individuals; a functioning and dependable unit the likes of which Konoha has never known. I am here to guide and protect you as you each discover your Will of Fire, to turn you into competent shionbi, and to keep you pointed towards the correct path. If you are capable. The bonds you develop here could define the rest of your lives - so from this point onwards, I ask you to hold nothing back.”

He paused, fixing each genin in turn with a piercing look, as if he was able to see right through them. It was a look that each of them may have noticed from the messenger-crane that had delivered their summons the night before.

”That means being honest, with each other and above all with yourselves. It means staying true to your oaths. It means that it is okay to admit when you are in over your head. Weakness and inability are temporary hurdles that we will conquer with each other; but we can only conquer those things that we know about.”

“Do you understand?”
He fell quiet again, hoping that each had listened carefully. Then, slowly, he sat down in front of the potential team. ”It means that our most important task right now is to know each other,” he summarised simply, ”and a team doesn’t work if only one person speaks.” He looked towards Yūku, the only one of the new unit to have arrived on time. Would he be the one to drive the others, then?

”You first, lad. Tell me about yourself. As much, or as little, as you want.” He nodded. One day soon, all of them would know one another’s deepest secrets and pains whether they wanted to or not. That was the nature of most teams; a dangerous life, raging emotions, and a few hormones tended to bleed secrets. It was up to them whether or not they divulged anything personal of left that for another date when they were more comfortable with one another.

For Yūku, the next several minutes would prove to be a roller coaster of emotions and jumbled thoughts. He didn't share Touka's desire to delve into small talk with someone he had just met - though he didn't go out of his way to be rude to the young boy either. Opting to let Touka do most, if not all of the talking up until the sound of several loud pops caught his attention. Initially, he had believed the needlessly noisy occurrence to be another squad going through training but was disappointed to find that it just might have been their teammate. ....What was the point though? thought Yūku to himself only to be pulled away from his thoughts by the boy revealing just who he'd been. In this moment Yūku realized that he was wrong to doubt himself and gave a stream of praise to his elder brothers and their mother for teaching him common sense.

It seemed that of the group gathered, Yūku had been the only one who actually took the meeting for what it was: Shinobi evaluation. Unlike his teammates; Yūku neither revealed the extent of his techniques nor did he delve into personal information within the first few moment of contact with another person, at heart he was kind and friendly and likely always would be but he recognized that there was far more on the line than small talk. To that end, when asked to "Summarize" himself in so many words, Yūku mulled as if to decide what he could and could not say before speaking. Naturally, his eyes were off limits to questioning; he could not speak on something that he himself, could not understand entirely. Nor would he discuss anything related to the Senju clan for other, more personal reasons (likely available to Teruin via file) besides using it in namesake.

"Could you give me an example so I can see how it's done?" He didn't want to make the mistake of saying something foolish or too revealing - after all, he had only just met all of them excluding Touka who he saw around the Compound occasionally. A loose tongue would likely cost him later if he weren't careful.

"I suppose that's fair," Hayashi said, nodding, "I am the one who summoned you, after all." He'd been intending to save his own rambling for last so as to better gauge the genin, but now would do well enough. He crossed his legs where he sat and leaned back on his palms to think for a moment.

"Hmm... Well, I recently turned forty, which was a shock. Even more shocking was when I turned forty-six. I have two children. There's Shiori - she's sixteen - who is just as fierce and single-minded as a teenage girl ever was. Then there's Tetsuya, who's ten, and has just graduated the academy himself. He's still finding his true talents, but soon he'll be just as surprising as his sister. My wife's name is Kohana, and you'll never meet a kinder or more earnest woman." He smiled faintly as he rambled about his family, the expression looking a little out of place on his hard, scarred face. It was evidently a topic that he could continue on about for some time quite happily.

"As for myself," he brought a hand over and rested it lightly on the hilt of the katana tied at his waist. With a polished black sheath and a crane-pattern on the tsuba, it was both a simple and beautiful weapon. "I'm a swordsman at heart. That's where my real skills lie. But I've learned a thing or two beyond that over the years. I'm a katon and fuuton user when it matters, and more importantly I am adaptable in the field." He leaned forward again then, growing more serious, and watched each of them in turn for a moment.

"I've served as a shinobi for three and a half decades. I've watched my friends and comrades die. I've taught four teams before you. I am a headstrong fool. I once mentored the Lord Hokage. I killed my first and best friend myself. My Will of Fire burns in the hearts of the people of Konoha. And there is more killing to be had before I am done."

He waited, staring still, then eventually let the tense atmosphere fade away and nodded again to Yūku.

Touka would still be crouching down to the height of child-hayashi, a warm smile gracing her features as she listened to his introduction, unfortunately in Touka's case that was quickly replaced by the sudden noise created by another person appearing out of nowhere, she was aware of the true meaning behind the meeting considering her past experience with another team, only to have stumbled at the chuunin exams due the past team's difficulty with teamwork.

If the dramatic entrance wasn't enough, she hadn't let her sight go from the boy and had instinctively reached for the Tanto on her back, whether to protect the boy or not was a different matter though, but she was instead taken by suprise again, noticing the transformation techinque coming to its end, yet once more out of instinct this time she reached for the tanto in a backhanded grip holding it infront of her as she backed to Yuku, seeming to protect him but upon noticing who it was she put the Tanto away before going to fold her arms, her foresty green eyes studying the scarred man in front of her.

"Wooow, you really had me believing there for a moment! Haha." she eventually burst out, having gone back to her rather relaxed self again from the sudden seriousness in her posture, she rubbed the back of her head as she laughed out. Quickly replaced by blinking as the drill instructor began barking instructions she hadn't immediately moved but nonetheless formed a line with Yuku, having not bothered much with the other genin yet, she was much for family and was yet to understand that the entirety of konoha is her family, she nodded as Hayashi began to explain himself, listening intently, burying her hands in her pants, looking to Yuku whom did not explain himself just yet she shook her head at that before speaking up.

"I'm Senju Touka, I'm here as per the summon, I was part of a different team before this one and stuff happened so, I'm not really looking to make any friends, I'm here to be a Shinobi, that is it." she explained herself, fully remembering how her old team treated her, having isolated her from the rest. "There's one person I care for, and will continue to do so no matter what the village has to say about him." she said, her posture having changed somewhat, she appeared somewhat defensive but also decisive in her words regarding her rogue brother, the once happy Touka having changed for a quick second.
"We'll see if your will of fire warrants enough attention." she finished, eyeing the other genin briefly before turning her attention back to Hayashi.

Michio was confused at the following sequence of events. The first was the boy suddenly transforming into an adult. Were they training an academy student? Oh lord was he in the wrong area!? Of course once the adult was barking orders like a drill instructor any and all fears of being in the wrong area fled from Michio's mind. He'd line up with everyone, although he'd be notably relaxed. While normally Michio would be at least slightly unnerved in this situation, not used to teachers like this, the relief that he hadn't ruined his entrance was far more than the minor inconvenience that he had a difficult trainer.

As he listened to the jonin list off his accomplishments, Michio was amazed! He was being taught by the sensei of the Hokage! There was no way he couldn't become a great shinobi with this man teaching him! Michio couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions with this man. When he talked of his family he had this look he knew only a family man could make. But at the same time he said things that frightened Michio, as if his looks weren't bad enough. He wanted to learn from this man but at the same time a small piece of him wanted to stay as far away as possible. Michio pushed those ideas away however, he needed to become a great ninja, so nothing less than this sensei would do!

After he finished the cute girl would speak, and her introduction was... confusing. It was cool to think someone else was from a previous squad, although Michio had hoped it wasn't for the same reasons as him. From the rest of her greeting Michio couldn't help but feel he was given a great teacher but a lowsy teammate. If they all did this as a matter of business and business alone they would be holding themselves back. Only as a group of strong and bonded shinobi could they truly grow.

Seeing as he was the third in line and the first one seemed to be waiting, Michio felt it was time he spoke up. "I'm Awai Michio, son of Onimaru and Katoni. I'm returning to active duty and am training to become a ninja famous throughout all of the nations. I'm going to keep climbing till the world knows me name!" He declared, his hand on the hilt of his gold and white blade. This was his goal for his life, and his mind it was the only thing he would work for. Everything else wasn't worth working for. He smiled turning so he was facing both his teammates and sensei, his smile beaming brightly. He wondered what the other kid would be like.

Even without uttering so much as a word about himself after the transformation ended, Yūku could tell that this person...whoever they were, had done much in the field. No one could have so many scars unless they were accustomed to pain, accustomed to life or death scenarios. But what was a Shinobi really? Listening to his comrades and newly introduced mentor Yūku searched for the answer among them only to discover that he'd been the only one among them without any experience. Michio was returning to the field and Touka came from another unit entirely - and then there was the instructor who strangely enough, gave just enough details about himself to sate any surface curiosity but never once mentioned his own name. Yūku wondered if whether or not the man would ever tell them his name or if that was apart of being a Shinobi.

What was a Shinobi?

"My name is Yūku and... What could he say? He didn't know the first thing about what they were doing or even why they were doing it! But he knew survival and he knew that if he didn't succeed here Li would never allow him to study as a Shinobi ever again and his path would end. No! "I've come this far...I can't turn back now." Thought the boy to himself as he hesitated briefly before resuming, "I want to know what it means to be a Shinobi."

Evidently Hayashi had said enough to stir the team into answering. Maybe a little too much - but what he’d said earlier about secrets was true. They would know all about him soon enough regardless, and he about them, so he felt that it was good to be so open. Honesty would be important for them all in the years to come. Smiling, he sat and listened to each as they spoke in turn, with Touka taking the lead. So far, she seemed the most mature of the group - which he supposed was unsurprising, given her experience. She’d gone through all of this before.

After each had said their piece, Hayashi weighed their words. Yūku seemed to be regarding him with a hint of confusion still, as if unsure of who he was. Perhaps he hadn’t heard Hayashi’s introduction earlier.

”Great,” he clapped his hands together and smiled, “we’re off to a good start. In case you missed it the first time, my name is Terūin Hayashi. You can call me Sensei, or Hayashi-san, Taichou, Terū-san… Whatever you want, honestly, so long as you listen when it counts.” He eyed them all for a moment, making sure they were taking that last part in. ”That means any time I give direct orders. Usually that will only happen when we’re in the field, where your lives will be in my hands. Trust me when I tell you that I don’t intend to see any of you come to any more harm than is necessary.” Perhaps that sounded a little daunting - but they were ninja; the profession came with a certain tendency toward danger.

That said, he regarded each of the genin in turn while considering what each had said in their introduction. What struck him most about Touka was her apparent lack of interest in making friends, even though that was the primary reason she’d been transferred out of her previous unit. It was also possibly the reason she’d failed in her first attempt at the chuunin exams, though her file did not directly say as such. Hayashi supposed it would be too much to ask for the young girl to have suddenly realised that just from a fresh start. It’d be part of his job to help her understand the mistake in her words, and it could be a long and arduous job if he didn’t make any early progress.
”I apologise for fooling you all, but doing that gave me the chance to see two sides of you rather than just the one you’ve all shown me now. Thanks to that, I know that you are a kind and conscientious person, Touka. So while I can’t fault your devotion to service - do not so lightly dismiss the chance of friendship here, too. I can assure you that it could become your greatest strength. All of you will need to rely upon one another time and time again during the next few years, and the bonds we make now can shape who we will one day become.”

Next he turned to Michio, and offered the boy a welcoming smile. ”I’ll remember those words, Michio. I have no doubt that you’ll succeed!” He chuckled. Clearly the boy knew a thing or two already, and desired a bit of recognition, which was harmless enough. Hayashi himself had been quite similar - if not considerably more so eager for recognition - when he’d been the same age. That recognition would surely come in time, particularly if the lad was as capable as he made himself sound. If nothing else, Michio’s confidence would do well to inspire the rest of the team. Especially Yūku, who seemed less sure of himself now than when Hayashi had seen him from his child-disguise. The difference was clear as day.

”As for what it means to be a Shinobi… Well, that’s the real trick.” He looked at Yūku and gave him a reassuring nod. A little apprehension at his age was common. “It’s what we’re all here to learn, whether we know it yet or not, and that lesson starts today. It may not finish for many years. To be Shinobi is not something that can be explained or taught, it’s something that everyone has to discover for themselves. Maybe I, and your new comrades, can help nudge you in the right direction, but ultimately it’s an answer that only you can find.”

”Well, now that introductions are done with, are there any questions you’d like to ask me?” He waited for a time to see if any of them would speak up, and once done, he would continue. ”Today is more than just a chance for us to meet and get to know each other, though that is still the most important thing we can do. I’ve already secured our first mission to tackle as a squad. But before we get to that, I want to hear each of you commit. If anyone wants out of this unit, speak now. If you want to truly become a team, to learn and grow together, then let me hear your conviction. Lastly, if you’re staying, then I want to hear how each of you see yourselves as part of a team; how do you like to fight? Do you see yourself as leading the group, supporting it, or even trying to work alone?”

Touka allowed herself to smile a little bit as she placed her hands on her waist, listening to what Hayashi was saying, many thoughts swirled around inside her head as she was still slightly on the guard due the way she had been treated on the former team, yet no one seems to have teased her or brought up anything about her rogue brother, despite this she didn't let her guard down, at least not yet, it was not safe for her to do so, she had assumed, whatever she said now is what they'll have to do with until she feels herself able to talk about more, she can't help but ponder Yuku's eyes whom by now probably could tell Touka was conflicted.

She nodded as Hayashi eventually mentioned her name again. "I failed the last exam because those you call companions stabbed me in the back by refusing to team up with me, or lack the ability to do so, Hayashi-sensei." she stated, her demeanor refusing to back down from her previous claim, she didn't know these people, how would she be able to know they wouldn't end up stabbing her in the back as well? She shook the thought from her mind as she regarded the other two, their goals were ...simple, Yuku wanted to know what it meant to be shinobi, the loud one who's name she failed to register the first time just wants to be famous, she adjusts her posture somewhat, still guarding before eventually crossing her arms, her foresty eyes regarding the two strangers with slight curiousity.

She couldn't help but consider the words, what does it mean to be Shinobi in truth? She's only known betrayal and isolation... She shook her head, making it obvious she was in deep thought and barely even managed to process the last words of the team leader

"...I suppose there's no fault in trying, I'd still like to be in the team.. her words were difficult but she did her best to hide it "Truthfully, I am not much for fighting, I consider violence in general to be revolting, it's a disgusting way to settle disputes. But that doesn't mean I haven't trained to be a Shinobi... My .. techniques are as of now mostly focused on hindering and keeping my opponents locked."
Touka eventually confirmed, trying to reveal as little as she can about what she actually thinks about teamwork and working alone at least, still keeping her guard up nonetheless.

Michio would listen to the his teammates and sensei speak. His heart beat slightly faster when his sensei gave him reassurance he would succeed. When Yuku questioned what it meant to be a shinobi, Michio wanted so badly to answer but he just couldn't think of how to properly phrase being a shinobi. He had his beliefs on what a shinobi was and what they did and did not do, but he couldn't just say them. Something needed to light that fire so that he could clearly show what being a shinobi meant to him.

But what Touka would bring up was more than enough to at least have Michio tell what did not qualify as a shinobi. "Well then they weren't real shinobi then!" He proclaimed after Touka finished bringing up her friend's betrayal. "No real shinobi would abandon a teammate for any reason! I promise you I will do better than those posers ever did!" Afterwards he turned towards his sensei with a confident grin. "And there is no way I'm backing out. As far as fighting, I'm awesome at pretty much everything. Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, my sword, everything. Pretty soon you're all gonna see me go on to master everything as well, so just watch out!"

As the other two were able to voice their strengths and weaknesses so effortlessly Yūku felt a tug inside his chest, he was unsure of exactly where he would fit into the squad to be completely honest and the techniques at his disposal were...lacking, compared to some others but by no means was he a 'weak link'. At least, that was what he believed. Li didn't talk of Shinobi matters much back home but the little bit of what Yūku did manage to squeeze out of his elder brother all seemed to point toward being adaptable, versatile and otherwise open to the ever shifting momentum of the profession. Of course, Yūku himself knew nothing of these things and hoped to learn more among these new people in his life - until then, to give a straight forward answer right out the gate seemed a little too optimistic and less like how a Senju in a position of power would handle it. "Sensei, shouldn't we do some kind of exercise to determine the answer to that more appropriately? I mean, I know the basic techniques taught at the academy and maybe more but I don't know enough to evaluate what my role would be..." Realizing that his statements would dramatically shift away from the eager, forthcoming and all around optimism of Michio, Yūku rubbed the top of his head as if he were embarrassed.

Although it was pretty unintentional, when he made eye contact with their new instructor Yūku's gaze would have a piercing effect. It was almost as if he'd been looking through the man instead of looking directly at him; Zeijaku Sensakume, manifested clear as day within the boy's youthful expression. To date, Yūku seemed to be the only known Senju clan member with these strange Scarlet eyes and as luck would have it, Hayashi would be the one responsible for strengthening the boy's hold over it.

Hayashi waited with anticipation as each member of the group gave their replies. As before, it was Touka that pulled his attention first. Clearly he would need to keep working with her there; it would be important for her to realise that her becoming stronger than her comrades did not make their inability a betrayal. He was tempted to begin such a lecture when Michio jumped in with perfect timing. His immediate support of the girl stirred a small sense of pride in the jounin. Hopefully, Michio's chipper attitude and eagerness to excel with the new team would counteract Touka's bitter experiences so far. The pair would certainly help each other grow.

Of the three genin, only Yūku failed to commit to the team. More and more, it seemed he would be the one would need the most encouragement, despite being the first to arrive. Hayashi looked at him expectantly for a long moment, hoping that he would realise and voice his desire to be part of a team. The boy's eyes seemed to catch the morning sun and glimmer as he looked back at Hayashi, suddenly with a little more depth to his gaze than earlier. Interesting... Hayashi thought, clearly there's something abnormal about the boy. One more thing for us all to conquer as a group, it seems...

"Excellent," Hayashi clapped his hands once to bring the brief discussion to a close. "Young Yūku's suggestion is a good one; and we will, all in good time. Today, though, I have something a little more important than sparring planned. We already have our first official mission."

He stood up and took a step closer to the group, dropping his voice just a fraction so that the discussion was a little more private. "An ANBU pursuit team has discovered the hideout of a known missing ninja, hidden to the west in the Kyoya Swamplands. The missing ninja in question has abandoned the location, and the ANBU unit quickly moved on to other trails. They have given a brief report of the area, but it is our job to carry out the proper investigation and exploration of the hideout."

He paused for a moment to make sure everyone was taking in the details. "Now, there's no risk of us running into that ninja, and the report does not identify major dangers within the hideout, but that doesn't mean we are perfectly safe, either - any fugitive will likely have set traps and hidden his secrets away carefully, so never let your guard down. We must be thorough and vigilant. If anything goes wrong, I will be there with you."

Hopefully, the prospect of a mission - a real mission, not the usual D-rank nonsense like chasing cats and moving boxes - would excite the group. They would be out in the field properly and doing meaningful work; surely that would light a spark within any genin?

"We have a lot of ground to cover, and I can fill in any details on the way. Expect to be gone from home for a few days. I have already sent messages to inform your families. Does anyone have any pressing issues or questions before we begin? Now's your chance, team!"

Although his explanation of the mission was brief, it was also a fairly simple task - albeit far more exciting than what most new teams would be doing - and he could explain more once they got moving.

An audible muffled squee of excitement could be heard from Michio as the mission was described. It sounded so epic! Going into the camp of a missing ninja, and they got to explore it! They could discover hidden plots against the village, an underground spy network, or if they got lucky; FIGHT THE MISSING NINJA HIMSELF! There was so many possibilities.

Michio was already next to his jonin teacher, ready to head off on their mission. He already had done training exercises, and as such he had absolutely no interest in them. "Don't you worry. Anything you can't handle I will be able to make up for. That's what makes me awesome after all." Michio said in an attempt to help Yuku feel more comfortable.

Mission...already? Yūku had arrived not knowing what to expect but their instructors words were as boulders to a weak foundation upon his shoulders. He'd never been beyond the Senju compound much less outside the village! The dangers that lurked were bound to be limitless and he couldn't say with absolute certainty that he could withstand them all. No! Get a grip Yūku! This is what you've been waiting for and now you've got the chance to rise to the occasion! Nii-san...I will make you proud. There was a fire radiating behind Yūku's crimson hues and without uttering so much as a word one could tell he'd resolved himself to the task. However, there was still a fair level of uneasiness tugging in his heart of hearts - a foe that the ANBU black ops had been sent out to hunt? What even were the ANBU?

There were many questions that he wanted to ask but now hardly seemed like the time. Instead, he merely nodded in agreement with the agenda and awaited further instruction. Smiling at how his new comrade seemed so fired up about their assignment despite the impending danger that it implied. Sure, the reports could indicate one thing but there was no way of knowing truly what would await them until they'd arrived and saw first hand what the situation was. That much Yūku understood.

One thing was for sure however: Things with this team would definitely be interesting...

“Very well,” Hayashi clapped his hands and grinned at Michio’s budding excitement, “then we move out!” waving for the trio of genin to fall in behind him, he began walking towards the exit to the training grounds. No doubt they would be back here soon - all teams spent a good deal of time in places such as these - but he didn’t allow himself to worry over jumping right into a mission. They were all talented ninja, and this mission was not beyond them, even if anything went amiss. In all, having met his latest batch of students, he felt increasingly optimistic.

A short time later, the group passed the great gates of Konoha. The sentries on watch there gave Hayashi respectful nods - one even saluted - but none interfered with his passing for he was well known among them. On the path beyond the gates he stopped briefly and, hands on his hips, looked up to the sky and took a deep breath. It was good to get out of the village. Sitting cooped up too long had never suited him. He glanced sideways to check on the genin, and felt a small bud of excitement growing inside him. Had any of them ever been taken outside of the village before?
”Come on,” he encouraged and broke into a run, ”let’s see if you guys can move like ninja of the hidden leaf!” He darted from the path and into the cover of the forest ahead, starting slow and steadily increasing his speed as he dodged trees, leaped bushes and ducked under foliage. Soon he jumped into the boughs of trees and worked his way higher, faster, higher, and faster still until the genin could barely keep up. Then, grinning, he pushed them harder. And he’d keep that at that gruelling pace until dusk, or until they dropped to the floor. There was a reason academy students dreaded getting Hayashi as a mentor; and a reason that his students - at least, those who he kept - ended up among the greatest and strongest of all Konohagakure’s shinobi.
