Medic on Duty

“Due to the recent rise in injuries taking place in the training fields, we will be posting a medic in the vicinity for the near future. Please see the schedule below for shifts. Signed the Office of Shinobi Safety…”, read the notice posted in the breakroom of the hospital. It hung directly underneath the sign that said, “Number of days since last training accident.” The number had been set back to zero.

Katio balked when he saw his name was on the roster for the whole weekend. “But why!?”, he shouted at the flyer. This was a punishment. Someone must have found out about him kicking that janitors cart a couple days back, or perhaps something worse that he did. He just groaned. There was naught for it, he’d be stuck babysitting the training fields as a reminder to the other shinobi not to hurt each other. Worst of all, he’d have to wear the stupid hat, coat, and pants of the Medical Corps. He hated wearing it, but he had no choice.

The training fields were quiet when he arrived on Saturday morning in his medic whites, goofy hat making him look like he might actually be some kind of chef instead of a medic. He set himself up inside the observation booth, monitors displaying images of each training field in sequence, including the one with the blood stain from yesterday’s debacle. Kaito settled into the world’s most uncomfortable chair, grumbling about his fate as he straightened his goggles over his eyes. Within minutes of staring at the blank monitors, he had fallen back asleep sitting up in his chair. A medic he might have been, as a guard though he was the worst. It’s not like it would matter though. Who would actually allow themselves to get hurt the day after a big training accident?[/font]

The young genin had a good general idea of what she'd be doing today. Training herself in the arts of the Shinobi was always important, and frankly, she needed some work on getting stronger. Sure, she could opt to practice her taijutsu for this. However, ultimately, she was rather rudimentary in that area. Ikana focused on ninjutsu as her specialty, but found that at this point, the best way to strengthen her chakra reserves now was to focus on her body. Within the nearby training grounds, the young blonde would look to the grassy landscape before dropping down into a plank like position. Her shoulders were squared and her chest level to the ground. Slowly did she drop down, and then she would rise back up shortly afterwards. That was one pushup. Today was all about improving her general strength and her body. Rising up and down with the soft dirt to cushion her, she took deep breaths as she really worked on her core and upper body strength. It was a tiring experience as one could imagine.

Eventually she'd lift herself, then move onto something not as terrible. Particularly she wanted to move on when her arms felt like noodles and her face was as red as a tomato. So, stooping down, she took deep breaths, wiped the sweat off her face, and walked around a little to cool herself off. Particularly, she had to stop doing pushups at around 40. That wasn't half bad she imagined, but there was oh but so much growth to be done. She'd calm her body in a bit, opting to lean against a tree, relaxing her back against it. Her legs would stretch outward at shoulder length distance before entering a 90 degree angle formation. Down. Up. That was one squat. These were great for getting your legs used to some punishment and again...strengthening your core. These were easier in her opinion to do than pushups anyways. In other words, she wasn't doing half bad at this. So, as she continued this workout, she'd soon stop when she neared fifty. She knew her limits, and she knew she was utterly going through aching at this moment. Maybe she should have spent time on jutsu theory and more time on getting swoll. With an animesque sigh, a cloud leaving her mouth, she'd stand up tall again, adjusting her glistening headband which rested around her neck.

"Wakata...[Understood.]" She said this to herself as she then walked forward to a nearby stream with clear flowing water and the occasional fish flowing through it. Ikana needed something to eat in order to get some more work done. Besides, it was nearing lunch time anyways wasn't it? So, using her head, she was able to put together a loose plan to get herself something to catch. Finding a flimsy but long stick, she'd use around 10 meters of wire, tying some of it around the end of her stick. She took one of her senbon out from the right pouch on her right leg, bent it to make a hook shape, and spent some time tying the wire to it's end. Now she had a sharp hook and a makeshift rod. "Ikuzo! [Let's Go]" She wound up walking to a nearby rotted tree, lifting a chunk, and finding a nice fat juicy grub. This would do. So, she cast her line with some bait, then waited. It was a nice calm day. Hmm...might even be a good day to go for a dip? Sounded like a great idea really. However, this young lady didn't bring a change of clothes, so that idea was out.

She simply stood there by the water's edge, waiting for a nice juicy bite! This was what was great about Konoha. The land really did provide for the people living within it. It was a wonderful place with little to worry about.

The morning rolled by as the medic slept, snoring away softly in the observation shack. Eventually people began to show up for training, their images dancing across the monitors as they sparred and performed jutsu. It wasn’t until one of them managed to knock over a tree that Kaito awoke with a start.

“Aaah-Where’s the fire!?”, he blurted out half asleep as he sat bolt upright, startled by the thump of the tree as it hit the ground. Birds erupted into the air, spooked by the sudden tremor. The fluttered across the view screens nearest the training field where the tree went down, drawing his eye toward them. One of those screens held an image of a stream where he saw a girl sitting with a fishing pole.

“What is she doing!? She could be killed! Someone should have told here this is no place to be fishing! …Oh wait, that’s supposed to be me, isn’t it?”, he asked rhetorically. Whoops. Kaito got up out of his chair, pushing it back and away with a loud scrape as he took off running for the field where the girl was fishing.

“Have to warn her!”, he said, huffing. “Have to stop her!”, he continued while puffing. “Or they’ll have my ass!”, he cried out as he sprinted to the edge of the stream and began running upstream towards her location, water splashing with each footfall. He ran as if his life depended on it, for the whipping he’d get for falling asleep on the job and letting someone get injured would likely end him.

“Miss, you have to stop!”, he screamed at her from a distance, as if she was in imminent mortal danger. By the time he reached the bank near her he was breathing as if he had just run a marathon, bent over with his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath.

“Not safe…”, Kaito wheezed, coughing before he could finish his sentence.

As the medic Aburame rapidly ran down in vain to inform the young Ikana of the dangers of fishing, she was casually standing, swishing her line in the water, hoping to get an appetizing fish. Unfortunately as he stopped by and spoke in a clearly exhausted tone that it was “not safe” she had to ask what the hell he meant by that. She tilted her head with an anime sweatdrop, her blue eyes staring at him as if he was a psychopath. “Nani?” She’d done plenty of training and fishing alike in this training ground and she was pretty darn sure that there was nothing wrong with the place. It so happened to be as he neared the bank. She could feel a tug on her hook. “Oho?” With a grin on her face, she was sure that she got herself a large fish. In reality, as he was running across the water, his sandal got snagged.

“Haaaah!” Twin golden stars lit up in her eyes as she pulled with both arms, yanking with her full might, and moving her body backwards. As a result, the medic fellow would soon feel a powerful tug himself, possibly making him fall backwards into shallow water, his foot being tugged on. “Yah!” Though...when she turned to look at him, she gave a look of disappointment. “I finally catch something...and it’s not even something I can eat.” An anime flow of tears dripped down her face as she’d stand up, dropping her makeshift rod as she walked forward. Seemed she was getting a bit stronger if she could yank out his weight from under him. “Gomenasai. My name is Miyamoto Ikana. You’re wet. So, nice to meet you Wet.” She chuckled at her bad joke before bending down and ripping the hook from his shoe.

In all seriousness though? This was a pretty weird and odd situation. “So...what was that about danger? I didn’t notice anything particularly dangerous to worry about.” She’d throw in a little bit of her own two sense as the blondie looked all around themselves to see that the place seemed pretty safe. “No...seriously. What danger?” A tree or two toppling was something common she imagined when someone was training. After all, they were a bunch of people with mystical ninja powers. What about that didn’t scream, “Destructive” when at a training ground specifically meant to train such powers.

Exactly. BESIDES! She was a Kunoichi! Did he really think she was just like...completely unable of defending herself like a damsel in distress or something? Wow, that thought actually made her upset the more her mind wandered to it. He better have a good explanation. Because right now, she was feeling a bit salty that she just lost her bait for her fish thanks to this medic?

Though not the heaviest, Kaito did still weigh a solid 45 kilograms. Something as flimsy as an improvised fishing pole really had no chance of knocking him down. The leverage was all wrong, you see. However, the hook wasn’t just a normal fishing hook, but a steel senbon. While his sandals would have normally protected him from a fishing hook, they weren’t up to the task of stopping the steel needle as it was pulled upward with gusto.

Kaito’s eye flashed wide, his mouth opening wide as he hollered in pain, lifting his poor foot as he tried to escape the stab of the ‘hook’. This of course put him off balance atop the slick, moss covered rocks of the riverbank. His fall back into the water was not graceful, arms flailing as he splashed down into the shallow stream. The white medic’s uniform her wore was drenched, sticking to his body as it turned translucent in the water. Neither was a good thing. There was a reason the Aburame wore loose clothing.

Unlike the beetles many thought were the sole insect of his clan, Kaito’s swarm consisted of larvae, slender chitinous worm-like insects the wriggled in mass quantities across or perhaps under the surface of his skin. From the outside of the wet clothing, such a fine distinction was impossible the make. For certain all the could be told was that his body was covered in them. Everywhere the cloth stuck, the larvae wriggled.

Kaito had yet to notice, the sharp tip of the senbon in his heel being his primary concern as he sat up, attempting to rip off his sandal in an effort to stop the pain. He let out a yelp as the needle tip pulled out, his bare foot dripping blood slowly into the stream as he tried to calm his breathing.

Number of days since last training accident? Zero.

Seemed the only dangerous thing around here was himself. Though, perhaps that was an unfair assessment. The genin would proceed to look to the medical nin as he fell, grasping her now ripped out hook. “Eh...lost my bait.” It must have been lost when he disrupted the hook. Something along that line? The girl would move the rod behind her person as she looked upon him, looking down at that bleeding foot as he removed his sandal. “Eh?” Looking to the Aburame clan member, she was rather surprised to see suddenly a massive appearance of worms? “Gomen. Gomenasai Aburame-San. Didn’t meant to cause you a bloodied foot. I was just trying to catch some lunch.” Awkwardly looking to the fallen figure and his mass of what looked to be almost maggot like creatures, purple lines appeared over her face.

“Though I think I’ve lost my appetite.” She quickly looked away from the sight, shaking her head a little before turning back to him. “Daijobu? [Are you alright?” She’d proceed to offer her hand out so he could at least get a decent surface to pull himself up. The mossy rocks weren’t the best, and it seemed that his insects were agitated at the momentary. Though, she supposed he could have pulled himself up from the water now couldn’t he? With that thought done, she looked at him before tilting her head with her left eyebrow twitching. She couldn’t believe he caused her to lose her bait. That was punishable by at least 50 more fishhooks stuck in his feet. However, since she was done with the whole “trying to eat” thing, perhaps she could go back to training and demand her new friend here join her.

“Ne-ne. Med Nin-San. Would you mind helping me train by any chance since you just ruined my fishing? I could use some practice in order to get stronger and I haven’t exactly had much experience with sparring partners. It would be pretty great if you could you know...throw things at me or something like that.” She smiled ever so slightly as she rose to full height, awkwardly rubbing at the side of her mouth with her index finger. “Eh? Eh?” Boy...she needed to learn to socialize with people a bit better. Well, maybe by training with him, she'd be able to do that a little bit better. Well...again, maybe.

The sharp pain subsided, Kaito finally had a moment to get his bearings. Luckily, he was too distracted to notice that her first concern was her bait and that his own welfare was only second on the list. He listened to her apology until she mentioned losing her appetite. The color of her face and the way she looked away said it all. His pride stung along with his foot, his face turning red as she offered her hand. He simply couldn’t accept, not after what she had just done to his pride. He held out a hand in a gesture for her to stop.

“I’ll manage, thanks.”, he hissed as he fumbled to his feet, wincing as he stepped on his bleeding heel. Kaito worked his way towards the shore slowly before plunking back down to treat his injured foot. He had only just begun to do so, forming iijutsu handseals, when Ikana addressed him once more. Though he wore goggles that fully concealed his eyes, his intent was still clear as day as his head slowly turned to stare at her.

“Something like that. Certainly.”, he said flatly, Shijikonchū surging forth from both arms and legs as they advanced on Ikana with surprising speed, trying to climb up her legs. Wave after wave poured out, trying to swarm over her, the larvae biting at ever little exposed bit of flesh they could find. Clothing could certainly protect against their tiny mandibles, but only for so long before they could dig through them. The most unfortunate thing was that they could easily slide under all but the tightest of clothes, getting into places no one wanted to have insects in, let alone biting ones.

Ultimately, it turned out that he was willing to help her out. She just didn’t expect for him to utilize his maggot like creatures for fighting. Though, she surprisingly had some pretty sharp instincts. She pulled away, leaping back around a meter to gain a little distance and immediately did she weave through some handseals. Focusing her chakra, she looked down to those larvae before her chest puffed up wide. “Katon: Ensui!” She released a steady stream of fire, aimed at the many worms at the ground before she turned her head, to the side, blowing a steadier stream to make a small wall of flames. The fire would consume the leaves and grass to repel all of those gross little creatures of his. “Gomena...but I won’t let your worms crawl all over me you know?” She made it clear to him as she immediately decided to return a little counter attack. Even as she was breathing her fire and making it hard to see, she was already forming handseals, though of course it’d be hard to see.

She’d open her mouth and shoot out five Senbon from her mouth. They were all aimed for the center of his body. Needles weren’t particularly dangerous as throwing weapons on their own, but they were harder to block than Shuriken and were still painful. Plus, they could lodge in pretty deeply and be harder to remove than any ol Shuriken or Kunai. So with that assault launched, she’d continue to step backwards a bit more. She wasn’t confident getting anywhere near those things as she had no idea how powerful they were and such. So, with that declaration made, she kept her eyes sharp, her instincts guiding her as she waited to see just how good this Aburame nin was. She didn’t expect much naturally out of a medical ninja though.

Perhaps it was a bit mean, but she normally saw medical ninja as those that got the easy stuff. They stayed in the back and healed up everyone after the hurting was done. Perhaps the Aburame here would prove her wrong however. Maybe he had some sort of tactic he could show her? Well, now it was time to really get the show on the road. The wind blew, and as the flames spread across the grass, devouring the fuel, she waited patiently. He agreed to help her spar. So, hopefully anyways, he wouldn't mind getting his ass kicked because of it. This little blonde girl had a bit of a hard time holding back when things came down to it.

Her hands were fast, so was her reaction time, Ikana leaping back to weave her jutsu and spit fire down upon his approaching swarm. The jet of flame met his larvae, flashing the water on their chitinous bodies to steam as they were blown back and away. As she swept the flame to create a barrier, Kaito gave them a quick mental nudge, sending the rest of the swarm surging out to the side and around the barrier on the side that she began blowing from while he formed hand seals of his own. His polarized goggle lenses cut through the glare of the fire, watching as her hands began to move once more. ‘Shit!’, he thought, tossing himself down and to the side towards the water, rolling into the stream once again in anticipation of another fire style technique.

Three of the senbon missed entirely while one of the senbon ripped through the white sleeve of his coat, another passing through the side of the coat. He could feel a stinging sensation in his side where the senbon left a large scratch as it grazed him. The water didn’t make it feel any better either, rocks covered in moss slipping under his feet as he tried to right himself. His foot still hadn’t been fixed either, making a stabbing pain shoot up his heel as he came to an awkward standing position, injured leg bent to take weight off it. His hands were still held in a seal, his teeth grit as he looked on at Ikana through his water covered goggles. Nothing had appeared to happen. Had his jutsu failed?

No, parts of his swarm had taken on a soft green glow. The larvae nearest the flames as well as the ones that had been blown away were the recipients of his jutsu, soothing away the burns before they could fully set in. Between the water and his jutsu, his swarm was well protected from the heat It had encountered as it made it’s second pass at Ikana. Between Kaito & Ikana was maybe four meters of space. The larvae streamed in, hooking around the wall of fire as they made their dash to cover the remaining distance to Ikana.

*[Iijutsu • Burn Ointment Technique]
D-Ranked Ninjutsu
A relatively simple and handy technique to have at hand, *[Iijutsu • Burn Ointment Technique] is used to alleviate pain caused by burn wounds. After focusing chakra into his/her hands, the user will hover them above the burn wound. As the chakra is channeled into and around the burn, it cools the area and works to prevent harmful, scar-producing blistering in the affected area. To provide this soothing relief to small areas of first degree burns, it's fairly quick to do. For small areas of second degree burns, it takes one (1) post of concentration to achieve the same effects. This technique is ineffective when applied to larger areas or burns worse than second degree.

Ultimately, it was indeed rather surprising to see the swarm approach with greater determination, but she had landed a blow. Though she didn't have time to waste here! She began to step backwards a few steps while forming more seals, and she had just the jutsu in mind for the occasion for such nuisances as these insects. They were fast though, and so she focused her whole attention on her hand seals. They'd be able to nearly be upon her as she formed already the seals necessary before she released her jutsu. “Katon:Sazanami!” With that, these insects would be hit by a far stronger Katon technique than they were previously. She was sure she'd kill the ones closest to her as the flame intensity was far more intense where she rested. The bugs that were fresh would likely burn the hardest, and he'd see the results clearly.

A burning sphere of flame would roll over, smother, and burn all of his swarm up to three meters, and with that said, even if they survived the damage, the lingering flames caused by her fire burning and spreading was another issue. The genin would then proceed to press him, now realizing his weakness. His swarm was troublesome, but if she was correct, he himself was inept at protecting himself. Though she was exhausting quite a bit of Chakra on this, and it was annoying. Forming a few more handseals as she ran forward, she ended with the tiger sign as her chest puffed up. So...he could avoid a few needles, but how would he face up to this? Her chest puffed up further as she aimed her head towards him. “Katon: Hosenka no Jutsu!” She'd test him here and now most surely.

From her mouth, fifteen fireballs with the size of 2cm per ball were headed for him at rapid speed, and she was certain he was going to be rather surprised at the least. Her ninjutsu wasn't half bad, but she figured two more of these and she'd be down for the count. She'd watch them fly and strike the ground where he remained, some missing entirely and slamming the stream behind him, kicking up water upon impact and causing a hiss from evaporation. She'd pant and wipe the side of her mouth as she had to calm herself now. After all, this was just a spar. Ikana wouldn't want to kill anyone after all. So then, what would the medic do now? Did he have more insects up his sleeve? Another cultivation?

Ikana’s weakness was her fear. Kaito’s swarm was a paper tiger compared to what he planned to do next. Because his insects were of so little combat use, he could afford to use them sacrificially. He could always breed more, their loss fleeting. When Ikana began backing up once again he set his plan into motion. His hands went from together in a seal to slipping up the opposite sleeve, a tiny movement by comparison to what it normally would have been normally. Underneath each sleeve was a bracer which held five shuriken. His dexterous fingers plucked a throwing star into each hand.

Fire burst from Ikana’s body as she finished her hand seals, Kaito dropping down into the water reflexively, even though the flames came up short of his position. When her flames quickly receded, he knew it was time to strike. He pushed up with his good foot, bursting forth from the water in a kneeling position with his arms crossed in front of him. Then with one smooth motion he whipped his arms forward and let loose the four-pointed stars, throwing the pair one overtop the other at her center of mass. If she were a target instead of a person, they surely would have struck her in the sternum and belly. Of course, she wasn’t a stationary target.

The smell of burning larvae was surprisingly not putrid. Most people didn’t realize that insects were indeed a good source of protein and had a nice crunch when cooked well. Still it was something of a waste, but sometimes sacrifices had to be made.
