Mt Hidaki Bound

Post by Kaito-san » Mon Jun 18, 2018 2:30 am

Kaito looked down upon the loaded pack at the foot of his bed, scrutinizing his list one last time to make sure he’d have everything he needed. Change of clothes? Check. Bedroll? Check. Mess Kit? Check. Travel rations? Check. Everything was neatly secured inside the bag, individual metal utensils wrapped in cloth and bound together to eliminate clanking. Finally satisfied with the bag, he cinched down the buckles on the top flap, securing everything in place.

Next on his list was his ninja gear, each piece coming off one at a time as he checked it over. Kunai holster? The black stained leather was in good shape, each snap holding securely. He drew each kunai from its separated slot and removed the old bandages wrapping the slender handles before taking out a fresh roll of bandage and wrapping them anew. Each was tied at the ring of the kunai with a bowline, wrapping down around the handle before being secured with clove hitch just under the spade like blade. Finally, he touched up the edges of the blade on a stone, ensuring their sharpness before replacing them back in their respective slots.

Next were his bracers, each having to get their straps loosened before slipping off his forearms. The five shuriken held under the arm of each were taken out, their four pointed blades getting a touch up on the stone before being restored to the bracers and set aside with his kunai pouch. Finally, it was time to move on to his medical supplies. Lucky for him, he had been resupplied this afternoon for the coming trip, which meant it was all ready to go. It just had to be added to the pile.

The last item on his list was his survival kit. Other than the water bottle, he didn’t touch it much. Yearly he had to check to make sure to toss food pills before their expiration date, but in general it didn’t require the hands-on fines of his other gear. Into the pile it went, Kaito setting his alarm before knocking out for the night. Morning would come too early, it always did.

Mornings were miserable for the medic. He looked well over half awake when he reported to the village gates to meet his comrades for the mission. As the request had been a rush, Kaito hadn’t been informed who would be on the roster. He had been the first chosen, or so he was told. The reason was obvious, the mission needed a medic. In his white lab coat and blue scrubs, his role was well advertised. ‘What would the others look like?’, Kaito wondered as he shivered in the morning chill.[/font]

Taku sat furrowed at the foot of his bed, eyes downcast as he stared at the various amounts of hiking equipment that was required for tomorrows mission. His first C-rank. Every genin had their first C-rank, most of them by the time they were 15 sure, but that mattered little now. His First C-rank mission was upon him. And he was understandably worried.

Ever since he received the mission report his chest had been unnaturally tight. He was pretty sure that the others thought it was excitement, maybe even anticipation. But to him his face likely mirrored one of true dread. It wasn't that he didn't think he could defend himself, he knew that his training would not fail him so easily in combat. And even if it did, he had overcome much, and was expected to die much sooner. It would be a good life.

'But it isn't combat is it? No its worse, search and rescue through the mountain side.'It just wasn't fair. Taku realized he was being dumb. A village needed aid, and Konoha would send it. Any ninja should be proud to serve his country in such a way that alleviated pain instead of inflicting it. But Taku had little to offer in that regard. His skills were with his swords, not shovels or packs. His strength was for quick bursts of self defense or aggression, built to break his opponents, not hard labor.

Taku was as strong as any man, true. His stamina, however, was poor at best. How long would he be able to help remove dubris before he sat panting on the ground, thoroughly winded. After hiking on top of it. His hiking equipment was packed and secured, his outfit, modified a bit with thick black pants, a pair of matching thick boots, and long-sleeved beige shirt his black vest atop it. Tonight he rested, pride still intact. Fear gnawing at his dreams.

Taku approached the meeting point with a small smile. He would not bring his woes to bear on his partners for this. They were needed, and unlike him, they could provide services. Kaito was a well educated medic, and while he knew little of Kaibo-san, the man was a chunin who would undoubtedly prove to be a huge contributor to their efforts, 'Enough of these self-pitting thoughts! I will enjoy this. It is our FIRST C-rank Mission! We're leaving the village for the first time. Beyond the wall and out of sight.' By the time Kaito came into sight, he had an honest smile on his face. No, they would not know his fears.

"Morning, Kaito!~" He called tunefully out to the fellow member of Team 646. Who knew that all it really took was two to make a team? Perhaps one day the roster would expand, or maybe not. Either way, he was always glad to take a mission with the younger nin. "Sleep well? I was so nervous, I hardly slept a wink." He chuckled weakly at his small admission, "Well, I'm sure the fresh air and open road will invigorate me. Do you think Kaibo-san will be here soon?"

The road to the village gate was mostly empty this early, save for one thing - the smells. Stalls not yet open for business were just beginning to prepare breakfast for the villagers that would soon be coursing through the streets, getting ready for the hustle and bustle of life in the lively Village Hidden In the Leaves. Toshi put a hand over his silently protesting stomach, full on a basic homemade meal of rice and natto, and his dark green eyes wistfully scanned the still closed fronts of the stands he passed, imagining what he would order at each. Normally he would like to get a good meal out somewhere before leaving on a mission, since you never knew how long you'd be stuck out on rations. But this mission had come in hot last night while the rains were still falling, and they were to leave as soon as the morning sun had risen, as time was critical.

Apparently the several days of rain hadn't just provided them with the humidity the morning sun was currently building up, but it had also brought landslides over by Mt Hidaki, and there were reports of people missing, possibly trapped. The village had, as always, assembled quite the appropriate team on such short notice, he had to give the paper pushers that. A genin medical ninja and his teammate were already ready to go, and he was being added to escort, as well as provide the brute strength and doton moving capability needed. A smile split the big mans lips as he continued his steady pace toward the gate. Ain't nothing wrong with missions like these every now and then, to remind you the core of being a ninja. Roll up your sleeves, put in a good days work helping people, and no one trying to put the pointy end of some piece of metal or another in ya.

Two figures matching the descriptions he'd been given stood already at the gate - good. While Toshi was on time, it was a good sign the lads were early. Some wanna-be superstar skating by on what they thought was skill would definitely not help on this one. They'd need all the earnest effort they could get. As the big man approached, he could clearly see which was meant to be the medical ninja. A thin young boy, clearly fresh out of the academy, stood in a labcoat next to a slightly older teenager in a rugged hiking outfit. Good again, he thought as he sized them up - mostly practical. Besides the personal preference of wearing his headband on his belt, Toshi himself stuck to the standard Konoha Chuunin outfit of dark combat pants and shirt under the green flak jacket. Admittedly, a size or two larger than most - Toshi stood at just over six feet tall, with a jaw as square as a picture frame and broad shouldered/muscled enough someone might be able to mistake him for a refrigerator. Or they might at least accuse him of carrying one, as a large black metal rectangular shield that looked heavier than most men could even carry took up most of the big mans back, framing his short brown hair pulled into a small rear topknot.

"Hey Fellas" The big mans voice matched his frame as he addressed the two genin while still approaching. He came to a stop before the pair, now that he had their attention. No sense in dawdling. "I take it you all are Team 646? Kaito, and ... Taku, right? I'm Toshi. Toshi Kaibo." He bent his head forward slightly in an introductory bow. "Pleased to work with ya both. So... you've both read th' mission, right? We get to the village, and get our young doctor here saving lives an' winning hearts, which leaves you and me" The big man grinned down at the boy in hiking gear "as the physical gruntwork, rolling up our sleeves and shiftin' earth. Sound like a plan?"

Toshi would wait for the boys responses, and check to make sure everyone had the rations and gear they needed - better to double check and be prepared, that one genin mission he only brought one days rations but was too proud to admit it and suffered it out was the WORST - before claiming it was time to "get a move on".

“Mornin…”, he said with a grumble as he tried to clear the phlegm from his throat. “Sleeping and me are on good terms. Me and waking up, not so much… Who’s Kaibo-san? Doesn’t ring a bell from any of my classes. You think they’re hooking us up with someone higher up the chain of command?”, he asked with a scratch to the back of his head. It wasn’t long after he uttered those words that Toshi came strolling up, refrigerator door on his back and all.

Toshi’s bass rumble of a voice greeted them, Kaito giving him a nervous wave back. ‘We’ve been teamed up with a giant.’, he thought to himself as Toshi made his introductions.

“Wait… Team 646? You’re saying me and Taku have been assigned to a team?”, he asked, gesturing between himself and the other genin with his hands. He nearly didn’t wait for confirmation, clapping his arms around Taku in a brotherly embrace. “We’ve made it! We’re on team!”, he cried triumphantly and now fully awake.

It took him a moment to come down from the rush of finding out he has been assigned a team, suddenly remembering his decorum as he backed away from Taku, straightening his clothes modestly. “Yeah, I’ve read it, but I’m not a doctor, not yet at least. You can just call me Kaito or scream medic real loud, either one works if your bleeding.”, he said with an awkward half smile. Gallows humor, wasn’t is grand?

“Sounds good to me. I’ll follow your lead, Toshi-san.”

After that it was a simple matter of going through packs. Kaito’s were all in order. In all likelihood he had overprepared. He not only had his own rations, but backup food pills. And in his medical kit he had an entire scroll with extra food pills and water additives which were meant for the villagers. After all, it did no good to heal them if you then let the weakest of them starve.

"Well, from what I've read about he's a--" Taku paused as a greeting was called out towards them. He was expecting him to be formidable. Weaklings rarely made chunin after all. But he was not expecting a tall house of a man carrying what might as well have been a safe on his back. The fact that his frail frame would likely stand out all the more as they started to get to work, made his stomach drop.

Taku brought another smile to his features when Kaito realized that their team was official. He figured the boy had been notified, but perhaps there was a delay. He returned he hug with just as much enthusiasm, "Yeah buddy, we made it. Looks like you're gonna be stuck with me for a while longer." Ah, finally on a team.

Kaibo spoke towards him and Taku being the muscle and he laughed a little too loudly, "Yeah, that's the plan." Well, it was the plan, just not one that he felt he could execute effectively. But he forced himself to shake loose the negative emotions and focus on the mission.

"Well, we're all here and packed. I've never been out of the village, so I don't feel comfortable leading the way. How about you guys?"

As the surprised young med-nin embraced his comrade, Toshi crossed his arms and let the scene play out, an almost smug look on his face. He wasn't blind to the context clues, apparently these two knew each other but hadn't yet been officially on a team till today. It was heartwarming to see, bonds like this were great sources of strength for ninja of the leaf, and part of the embodiment of the will of fire. The large man was sure it would serve them well in the trials still ahead for them in their still fresh ninja careers.

Toshi responded to the young med-nin, Kaito-san, with a thumbs up. "Sure thing, Kaito".

As the older boy, Taku, spoke, Toshi noticed the pale white eyes staring at him, tucking that information away for later. A Hyuuga, eh? Damn those paper pushers DID do fine work assembling this one, he'd be quite the help searching. The end of the boys admission of never having left the town and follow up question brought Toshi out of this thought.

"Would ya'll believe i was born out there?" A muscled arm ending in an open hand, partially covered by brown fingerless gloves, gestured past the gates at the wild. "Well, not mount Hidaki specifically, but outside the village. Didn't make it to the leaf till i was already slightly past the age most of yall started academy. Been out a good few times since too." He claimed, tapping the ninja emblem he wore on his belt "So hows about I start at point, and we'll rotate part way there?" The question was less of a question than he made it sound, as Toshi turned to walk the few steps over to the gate guards and show them the mission papers. He exchanged a few quick words with the guard, a man he knew in passing, gesturing over to the boys as he spoke (if they had stayed put instead of following). Then he would head out the gate, and if the boys were still in place, wave them over, transitioning from buildings and walls to a clear dirt path, heading toward the vibrant wilderness the land of fire was known for.

"Alright, lets start triangle formation, remember, at least three meter spacing. There aint a wiff of 'enemy contact' on any of this mess, but that aint no reason to get sloppy, right boys?" He tried to say it in a agreeable tone, hoping it came off more of a proposal/agreement then a lecture or command. He found that usually worked better with the brash teenage boys he worked with, as he had no trouble naturally projecting authority, but he'd see how it went with these two.

As they made some distance from the town, he'd mostly concentrate on watching ahead and leading the way, letting the boys behind him drive the conversation, though chiming in where appropriate. It wouldn't do to make all these claims and come across so headsure, then fall into an ambush or lose the way.
Should there be a long stretch of silence with nothing happening, he'd try and spark things back up again with a "So, you two dont look much like you graduated together. How'd ya get to be a team?"

“Sounds good. I’ll take the right.”, Kaito replied, falling into his place in the triangle formation. He didn’t have much experience with it, but the concept was simple enough that it could be understood by the name. Unfortunately, he was the slowest of the group, needing to exert more effort to keep up with the casual jog of the chuunin and Taku. It didn’t leave much breath in his lungs for conversing, so he wasn’t really a Chatty-Cathy.

“It just happened, you know?”, he asked, his heart rate pounding to keep the blood and oxygen circulating to his screaming muscles. Underneath his lab coat and under his scrubs, his insects moved to cover his heart, Kaito’s fingers flipping through hand seals quickly. A moment later his chest began to glow a soft green through the pale blue of his scrubs.

“They teamed us up for a random mission, and I think they must have like how we worked together or something.”, he continued, feeling relief rush to his muscles in the form of oxygen directly inserted into his blood stream.

*[Iijutsu • Oxygen Flow]

Simple in its form yet highly effective in practice, the *[Iijutsu • Oxygen Flow] technique allows its users to clear obstructed airways, to perform less extensive CPR, and to give cells the oxygen they crave. After focusing chakra into the hands, the user will place both over the target's chest (through the back works as well). By allowing the chakra to be channeled throughout the lungs and up through the air ways, any unseen, solid or liquid obstructions will be cleared from these passages and ejected through the mouth, allowing the patient to breathe more easily. Additionally, the hands can be placed over the heart to help oxygenate the body's cells. In this instance, users must be much more careful, as over-oxygenating cells can cause more harm than good. This technique takes the entirety of one post to perform.

With Kaito and Toshi already in place, Taku shifted towards the left slot and did his best to keep the formation. It wasn't the hardest formation he'd ever practiced, but he had to put in a effort to keep up with Toshi and that caused him to worry, 'I have to hold out. I won't be a burden the whole way through.' Trying to preserve his energy, Taku left a majority of the talking to his partner and chimed in when he could.

"Yeah, I don't know if it was planned or not. It worked out well though." He hoped his effort wasn't reflected in his tone, but who could tell? He noticed Kaito was lagging a bit, but he didn't say anything, even when the boy applied what looked to be a medical jutsu to himself. He was going to ask, but he decided against it.

"So, how long have you been a chuunin?" If they could keep the conversation off of him, then it would be that more manageable. He could already feel some discomfort from his chest, but he endured.

"Oh, lets see...prob'bly 4 or five years now." The big man said, turning his head to glance back at the genin. God, has it been that long? I guess so. It seemed like not that long ago he and his family were passing through the giant village gates into a world they would have had trouble imagining. Now all the technology and ninja skills had become the commonplace, the everyday. Toshi still did take special delight in the advancements and luxuries you got in the hidden village you didn't get elsewhere. Maybe he had gotten soft. Still, every time he visited a town outside of the village, he was reminded starkly what life was like elsewhere, and what he had come to achieve.

"Started a'bit late, as 'n outsider an all. And then it was all slow 'n steady, honest effort. Couple years as genin, learning exactly what MY ninja style was, and making my name. Then" Toshi flexed an arm in the same manner as he did in the village and shot a grin "I showed em what I could do in the exams. But yeah, as Chuunin - 4 or 5 is about right" Toshi wondered if perhaps Taku was looking forward at chuunin himself. It would be around the right age, especially for the ambitious. He's have to make a mental note to watch him closer, see what the kid could do.

He did notice, as he glanced back, that the younger team member was struggling to keep up, even with a jutsu, and the older boy wasn't showing it as much, but would probably be at about his limits as well. Toshi slowed his pace just a fraction as he talked, but intentionally, and kept it at the slightly lower pace even after he finished speaking. This mission seemed relatively safe, so also making it a bit of training seemed like a good idea, and a little bit of solid workout was almost never a bad idea. Plus he'd get a better idea of their limits, in case something were to happen. But he didn't want to go so fast he'd cause them real trouble or leave them dead tired. He was a teammate on this mission, after all, not a training instructor in a practice field.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later in the day, the now overhead sun had removed all traces of the days of heavy rain from the ground, leaving only the slightly humid air as a reminder. Wildlife was one again calling back and forth across the wooded landscape the three ninjas sped through.

Well, sped was a relative term. Toshi was never accused of being a speedster, though he wasn't slow compared to the other chuunin either. He kept up. But it had been several missions since he had last worked with fresh genin, even though he liked to volunteer the younger students out more than most, and his initial pace might have been more optimistic than he thought. Not super long after he first reduced his speed, he just might have slowly and slightly reduced it another step to be even more manageable. The boys had put in solid effort and shown what they could do, and he wouldn't make them ask to slow down, they should feel pride and confidence in the effort they had been doing to go as fast as they did and endure without giving up.

And then, when he had spotted the mountain above the treeline, he suggested rotating the order and taking a slower pace. He wouldn't say it was to ease up on anyone, of course, but to have "full energy when they arrived at mission site", which by now shouldn't be too much longer.
