Green leaves and pretty pastures

Post by Legacy » Mon Nov 11, 2019 10:39 am

How long had it been now, Gene wondered. Deep underground where sunlight could not reach, where the whispers of man could not penetrate and provide distraction, how much time had gone by now? How much of that time was still yet to come? Dragging a lazy left hand across his eyes Gene rid himself of a building crust that would have added weight to his eyelids and then sighed a deep sigh. Before him on a brown desk was the file containing a list of Konoha's most notable missing ninja in alphabetical order; Gene paused when his eyes had found Chikara and Nehan, two Konoha fugitives who seemed to slip just under the radar when a search team had been put together to find them.

What was most pressing to the Commander was that one of these Shinobi had fought against the Hokage and a bannin level ninja, living to tell about it. Surely the reputation of Takeo would be diminished and Konoha's might brought into question if this...Nehan had been allowed to keep walking around free. Although matters of this nature were never simple Gene had to admit coming up with a means to take down an adversary who could regenerate from their wounds almost as quickly as he could dish them out was...tricky business. He'd never gotten around to asking the Hokage how he'd managed to handle the situation and Yoru , from Gene's understanding, had been missing since the incident. There had been no one who he could gain insight from and in that moment, Gene allowed the gravity of his position to sink in. At the top there were few and of those few only a handful could truly be of use; as a Leader, strategist and then some, Gene would need to tackle this problem on his own and how he managed to handle this case would most likely serve to either make or break the org with momentum.

Failure was not an option but neither could he afford to be naive in his ventures. It was time, Gene decided, to revist the old archives of the village. Perhaps there was something there that could assist him? With the thought in mind the young man stood from his desk, scooping the file of both chikara and Nehan under his right armpit before turning to head out the door of his office. Immediately upon exiting the room Gene was met by two sentry Guards saluting him though neither uttered a single word nor did Gene speak to them, acknowledging them instead with a simple head not indicating they return to their at ease posture. Shortly after, Gene was gone..

The archives. A place where anything lost could be found and some times, where things too horrific for the public could be lost. In the entire village proper there were only two men alive with access to the secret archives and of those two, only one was a publically known figure. For Gene and his line of work had been built almost entirely around silence and secrecy; thus despite the Hokage's attempt at making the Anbu public per Gene's order all save for one of the tactical squads of the org continued to operate privately. It was the most efficient manner Gene believed, to compensate for Onigumo's structured way of doing things and the Hokage's more flashy display at his coronation ceremony. A display that still made the current commander skeptical for a number of reasons.

After all, if the purpose was to keep the nature of the anbu a secret why then, would takeo announce the orgs existence to the rest of the village? Did he have plans for a secondary off shoot of the anbu who would see to the more intricate affairs? Or perhaps there was something else beyond even Gene's understanding. Regardless of the context of that the Commander decided to rummage through the archives searching for anything relates to the two criminals that had caught his attention. If they were linked to any organizations, places that both were last seen visiting, mannerisms and more; by the end of his investigation Gene would know more about his marks than they'd know about themselves.

At least...that was the plan.
Later that day

"Where is he now? Gene inquired thoughtfully, trying to bite down on the irritation that had no doubt been caused by another untimely interruption of his work. Since none other than himself and the Hokage were allowed in the archives room of headquarters he'd had to shelf the files he'd been perusing, ensure that all security measures were properly in place and then finally, after all that, leave the chamber to speak with a subordinate. A conversation that seemed only to grow more tiresome the longer it drew on and it did draw on until finally the Commander posed his question. In response the masked operative shrugged his shoulders - a grave mistake, though not one that Gene hadn't expected. It was an olden rule of thumb within the Anbu to always be "in the know" as Gene liked to refer it as and typically this was the expectation. However, when it came down to the Hokage in particular Gene understood that keeping track of the man could some times be...problematic.

It wasn't that Takeo took steps to actively prevent himself from being found (though Gene imagined that the man could and often did do so when it suited his needs) nor was the surveillance team responsible for keeping tabs on the man lacking; though there were days, days like today where an entire ANBU squad had to be dedicated to the task of finding one old man. Of course, Gene would never actively send out an entire unit for the sake of that task unless absolutely necessary; no, today he'd simply opt to find the man himself. "I see. Relay this message: Odachi squad is to remain on Standby until nightfall. I have a task that will need ...delicate, handling but first I must speak at length with the Hokage. No one leaves, not even for a smoke break. " If the operative had been displeased by this recent telling, he hid it well and responded only with a bow before tending to the task given to him. Gene, meanwhile, set off for the Hokage's mansion.

Only, he'd never make it..

No. Instead of finding the Hokage, something that should have taken priority Gene was instead assaulted by a rather large host of problems brought about by the civilian body of the village. For whatever reason there seemed to be a shortage of on hand Shinobi in this area or that district and seeing that he'd been flying the Konohagakure headband (a fact that he now regretted) many of the villagers brought their disputes to Gene directly. "Now tell him what he's jabbering on about is a bunch of baloney! Ain't no such thing as a spirit and if pigs could fly, they'd fly right into your--" Gene happily intervened, not wanting to hear the end of that particular thought. "Alright hold up a minute," he began. His shoulders thrown up in mock confusion, hands gesturing a necessary "time out." "Now what's the problem?" When the man who's spoke up first answered Gene listened thoughtfully and only stepped in when it looked like the lad was about to get charged up again. "Well...spirits don't exist though you will have many say otherwise; frankly, I'd be more concerned about the wife than this little can of worms." At the look in both men's faces Gene could see defeat, at last this was one matter that wouldn't be revisited soon. Still, he had to wonder exactly what it was that sparked such a conversation in the first place. Leaving the two where he'd come across them, Gene made a mental note to instruct his unit to monitor the villagers more...thoroughly.

Not that he believed the matter could extend further but farcry it be for Gene to sit and wait just to find out. Whoever had been stirring up the hornets nest around that particular fiasco would need to be visited and their mind blanked immediately. Speaking of mind wiping Gene had just about rounded the corner when he noticed two Shinobi, likely Chunin, arguing between each other. Kami curse his eyes for not realizing it sooner but the two were both from clans that in the village's history, were once at odds between each other. "You think you're so noble, don't you Senju dog!?" This coming from the shorter of the duo, a frail looking blonde who's eyes were as green as an emerald. There were lines protruding from the youth's reddening face and for a moment, Gene thought he saw something akin to hatred in his eyes. Still, it wasn't until the Senju responded that Gene decided to step in and try to play mediator. After all, he wasn't a baby-sitter and surely two Shinobi were capable of handling things themselves...right? Wrong.

"Noble? No. Better than a fuming Yamanaka at handling the village's needs...certainly. Now, if you'd like to try and prove me wrong you're welcomed to try but remember -- it was my family who won the war." There was an icy chill in the way that the Senju spoke and an even colder feeling when he considered for the moment that these two were dead serious and that this banter, however it might have started, was on the verge of leading to a fist fight out in the open---worse, a fight between two Shinobi around civilians. Gene swooped in on the bunch like a gale wind almost knocking both over from his sudden appearance (situated strategically between the two forcing them a ways back from each other.) Looking into the eyes of one and then the other, Gene recognized the situation for what it most certainly was and made yet another mental note. Clannies and their damned feuds. I doubt this incident will go further but still, it might be time to have someone sent over to wherever these two reside to smooth things over a bit.

Ironically, it was at that exact moment that Gene's mind decided to inform him that the previous Hokage had also been a member of a clan though he couldn't place exactly which one at the time with more---urgent matters pressing him on. "Hi guys, I get that you're both eager to express your wills of fire and ordinarily I would say have at it but..." his eyes briefly roamed around to indicate the spectating crowd and host of others who were starting to approach because of the commotion. "What'd'ya say we call this one a draw for now?" Unsurprisingly, it had been the Senju to agree first before passing a glance toward a now scowling Yamanaka who eventually, agreed as well. Only when the two parted to go their separate ways and were well clear of the merchant district did Gene begin walking again.

That almost seemed a bit too intense for a friendly competition between friends---I wonder if those two really mean to beat each other senseless? Well, just one more thing to make a note of. And Gene did make a note, storing the most crucial information about what he'd just witnessed within an imaginary pocket space in his head where it could be recalled upon later for a more...thorough interpretation. Being of the mind that many of the denizens of the Leaf village were on good terms this sudden turn of events seemed almost telling. Was there something in the air this time of year, Gene wondered.

With the thought of what he'd witnessed still fresh on his mind among other things, the long walk to Konoholic was a welcomed distraction that gave him the time needed to categorize and prioritize things on his to-do list. Naturally, he would still need to broach the subject of possible clan tensions to the Hokage but before that time came maybe there was a quicker, more pliable solution. Frankly, it was with this thought in mind that Gene looked forward to meeting with an old colleague who he hadn't seen much of since the repair efforts finally ended.

I wonder what his take on this whole ordeal might be. After all, you've always been more of an optimist than I am; Awai, Fanho. With a slight push the double doors of Konoholic breezed open and from the other side stepped a masked silver-haired Leaf Jounin clad in garbs likely purchased from a Fire country retailer (Outfit 2). Gene greeted the wait staff with a warm familiarity and even shot the breeze with several of his old colleagues before finally finding a private but hardly secluded booth table to sit at where he could watch both the entrance and the windows facing the outer perimeter of the building comfortably. With so much chatter going on as it was, Gene was not worried about people eavesdropping on any conversation and besides, while he was nowhere near a celebrity of the place many of the patrons and staff alike knew and respected Gene for his hard work and thus wouldn't dare get involved with his business without prompting.

It would have been hard not to notice the line up of dime pieces floating in and out of the establishment or the so called players trying their hardest to leave with something for the evening or the angry looks of women who's men were captivated by the serving beauties and to Gene this was all simply a part of the entertainment. One had to know that when going to the Konoholic these days the experience was truly a toss up - as was the case when one summer weekend Gene and another had been all but forced to drive some hooligans terrorizing the place out. It was truly an anything goes kind of tavern though only those who got too crazy, rowdy or rambunctious were ever asked to leave (politely or by force). To Gene, this was a place of grand memories and great history; humble beginnings and a badge of success, now it was more like a second home.

Frankly, Gene couldn't help but be amazed that the establishment had been one of the few places to remain untouched during the invasion as if to be protected by some kind of special fuin. Of course, he would never say such a thing out loud but Gene had long since suspected the Tavern owner to be more than just your average retired Jounin - even after working for the man Gene had yet to truly figure the guy out. He was one of those somber quiet types who only spoke when a situation truly called for the kind of wisdom only an old, old soul could produce and usually when he did speak everyone, even some of the older patrons were quiet to listen. There were talks that Gene had missed out on earlier on in his career as a Chunin simply because the bar owner had him running around handling errands due to his age but this soon changed after being promoted to Jounin - Gene wasn't sure if it were because the man felt as though he could not relate to another Jounin or some other unexplained reason but he was always happy when the old man came and dropped jewels of knowledge and wisdom on him because in the long run those jewels seemed to always benefit.

"Place's lively today, business is good I see." Gene spoke in a low tone. Looking around, he began to wonder if Fanho would be able to find him in all the hustle and bustle of the tavern.

Green leaves and pretty pastures

As Fanho strolled through the city he lacked his typical shinobi pouches on this day as he'd been stuck in meetings all day at the Mamorinuku meeting. If he could get by with just throwing some kind of clone in the meeting he would've, but he knew that some of the council members that had attended would've had his head if he hadn't attended in person. Despite the snooze storm that they had talked up in the conference room, Fanho gave a big yawn as glanced around at the markets. To be quite honest, the shinobi had never been to the Konoholic. While such a notable bar and hangout spot for the village, the shinobi had never visited, or made a move to see the outside of the building. Quite frankly it was pretty much the only enigma left in the village Fanho lacked any idea about. Despite Fanho's lack of knowledge, there certainly wasn't any lack of knowledge of its existence in the village as it was constantly busy with people in and out.

As Fanho roamed the streets the people greeted the Awai with warm smiles, hand waves, and even a few of the Genin had stopped Fanho to ask him questions about his shinobi career and how fast he managed to run through the ranks. Despite the age, Fanho had made quite the name for himself being one of the youngest Bannin's to have ever ascended to the rank he couldn't help but feel a little overwhelmed at times by the fame. It was only exacerbated by his age, if he had been a few years older it'd at least been a bit tamer. After being able to shake off the young ones, Fanho breathed a sigh of relief as he ducked safely into an alleyway. As the relief flowed from Fanho's body, it tensed once more as he heard a stir in an alley close by between a Yamanaka and a Senju. The shrillness of the argument spilled over into Fanho's alley way, "-it was my family who won the war." The young Bannin gave a sigh as he was about to walk over and talk to the duo before a familiar voice rang out stopping him in his tracks. "Hi guys, I get that you're both eager-" The voice he could attribute to one of his first real lifetime friends, Gene Mitsurugi.

The young Bannin gave a light chuckle as he overheard him reprimand the two before trotting off making the two make amends and walk away. Even if they hadn't meant their apologies, Gene had avoided the worst, and had at least made them think about their actions. It was the most one could do in that situation, for even some of the kids in their clans couldn't forgive blood rivalries that even their parents weren't alive for as odd as it was. As Fanho trotted his way in the same direction his friend had, he'd come up on the Konoholic several minutes after Gene had to ponder the architecture of such a building. "Ah, so its been over here this entire time." As Fanho stepped into the building a few eyes had glanced over his way, and he could hear the low whisper of his name across the room. For it was the first time Fanho had stepped foot in the building, and as a young Bannin there would always be talk where he went. The popularity of his name preceded his arrival to the establishment. With a quick flash of his sensory skill set Fanho was able to pick out Gene among the booths lined up. As he walked his thoughts drifted at super speed pace at the last time the two had spoke.

The hospital sounds, smells, and well lack of sight drifted in Fanho's mind. The two hadn't exactly walked away with the nicest things said, nor had they spoken since. During that time Fanho had made Bannin, brought Zakuro back, and was on the path to becoming Hokage in a few short years. The youngest Hokage in the history of Konoha if he made it. It'd be a lot to throw at his friend. After all he wouldn't have asked to hang out if he didn't feel like the two couldn't speak or if there were issues between them, right? Fanho couldn't help but feel Gene was an outlier on the Zakuro situation, understandable as Gene was pragmatic, and was being realistic of the situation. Blind optimism and faith was Fanho's specialty. Not to mention it was just standard village protocol to take care of Zakuro that way, but he had hoped to shape those better during his tenure as Hokage. As his thoughts snapped back, Fanho took a seat in the booth across from Gene.

"Is this where they put the lonely singles? I guess we'll both fit in back here right?" Fanho beamed with a grin shot at Gene. It was only in his nature to crack a joke self deprecating and poking fun at his friend's lack of romantic companionship as well.

"Hey I'm single by choice what's your excuse?" Came the Jounin's response, a loose smile playing across his lips though scarcely visible due to Gene's mask. As was customary of meetings with friends, especially old ones, Gene stood to greet Fanho as he approached and would not take a seat until the Bannin did so himself. It was hard to believe that both had effectively risen to the top of their chosen fields and had since gone on to do monumental things for the village in their own unique way; one worked the light and all but catered to the interests of the public while another, walked in the Shadows. And yet...looking at them smiling, it would have been hard to label either as bonafide soldiers to be thrown into the fray if necessary.

After all, how strange was it that two teenagers could talk, walk, live and breath as normal citizens and yet at the drop of a dime draw steel and iron; shedding blood behind their beliefs and wills? Gene had just been about to ask Fanho about his day when the waitress, a tall petite red-headed woman with piercing Green eyes approached the booth. Gene glanced at her and couldn't help but to admire what he saw but soon abandoned the fascination for his purpose was far too great to be pushed aside. If the woman had recognized that the man sitting across the table from him was a Bannin of the village then it certainly showed in how speedily she'd moved to take both of their orders.

"So," Gene began, folding both arms over his chest. "this thing with the land of lightning...do you think it's a good idea?" A jazzy tune filled in the silence while the silver haired Jounin stared, waiting for an answer. Word had traveled fast about how someone by the name of Nakajima had plunged a nation into a state of war only to come out victorious and unite the nation under one banner and now word had been traveling even faster about the possibility of a rail road. It had all began on the day that some man bearing Chakra rivaling a Genma, along with a small envoy, had showed up practically on Konohagakure's doorstep requesting an audience with the Hokage. Mind you, this wasn't some wizard of oz fantasy land walk through the woods we were talking about here; in order for one to successfully reach Konohagakure no sato, they would have had to battle their way through various types of hazards both artificial and native to the land...for days on end. Taking his right arm out from under him, Gene took hold of the freshly brewed hot tea and sipped only once and with brevity before setting it back down and returning to his previous position.

The young Bannin scratched his head and sighed as he pondered an excuse. "Well, lets just agree to disagree right?" The Awai chuckled as he pulled his ear awkwardly. Women we're one weakness of the Bannin, quite frankly he knew a lot about ninjutsu and taijutsu, but was utterly hopeless when it came to women. Unbeknownst to Gene, Fanho was already sort of wrapped around a woman's finger that lived over in Kumo, but nothing serious just some teasing that blossomed into a crush of which Fanho wasn't familiar with to reciprocate properly. Luckily a woman had came to take their order and save Fanho from having to elaborate or continue the conversation on women. As she took his order Fanho had just asked for a cold glass of green tea with onigiri filled with dongpo pork. It had been a while since Fanho had indulged in any food that day, the grumbling in his stomach confirming the order uncalled for.

As the woman walked away to hand their orders over the conversation turned to the trade partnership with Kumogakure. Fanho tilted his head and thought hard as he had returned from Kumo weeks before Gene and Fanho had decided to meet. "Well, its better to have allies on both sides of the continent right? Too I think its good that we're growing a friendship with them it creates stability in the region when the two countries can communicate and build together. If we can foster and build peace and build this railroad, it'll improve thousands of small countries lives." Fanho wasn't necessarily trying to create a sales pitch to Gene, just more so explain the reasoning for such a thing. Give an honest overview of such a thing, and the optimism coming off of Fanho's words would give an obvious tell of his opinion on the situation. The Bannin agreed with the railroad and could only see benefit from such, the only ones he had left to worry about would be that of Iwa and Kiri, of which at least Kiri was a wild card, but with the way silence fell over Iwa they too were slowly turning into such as well.

"Its for the best as Kumo shares our ideals and beliefs. If they didn't, I don't think the village would've entertained the idea."

Fascinating.

It was time to start taking a long hard look at the leadership and those associated with them. In less than five minutes of conversation with a presumed colleague Gene had unearthed three key details that had not exactly been spoken. For starters, there was a breach in security; someone, somewhere had broken protocol. Typically, this was the kind of thing that would have resulted in a large scale investigation but Gene, considering his options with the foresight of a true Shinobi, understood that to do so would likely arouse panic and further permeate the mole. As a former operative of the Anbu black op there were things that Fanho specifically, had been privy too. How the organization conducted its recruitment, select tactics used for various kinds of missions, the kinds of tasks each squad had been more likely to receive based on the unit's composition; but never, ever would someone who'd never climb to the rank of Buntaicho have access to information as classified as the Railroad construction of beginning in the Land of lightning. That fact was something that had only been previously broached by the Hokage and the Raikage themselves during their first "sit down" and would have only had records transcribed available to the most covert of operatives, to the ANBU.

What was interesting to note was that while Fanho might have been a great deal of things, he certainly was not ANBU. A standing operative would have recognized Gene's words as cryptic and knowing such, would have been careful in what information had been so volunteered publicly but this was not a mistake that Gene would make known to his colleague. In fact, had the Awai's words provoked any sort of feeling within the silver-haired Day dreamer, Gene hid it well. He'd come to learn that when one had been so drawn in by their own sun that it was best to save the rain clouds for later. At some point well after their meeting Fanho would be approached at his residence by several members of the Anbu black op and one Yamanaka, Inoairi; Bannin of Konohagakure, also known as the man responsible for all of the village Shinobi mental evaluations---only, Fanho wouldn't be getting an Evaluation. No, that would just be the lie told to get him to the site that Gene wanted him to be and away from the public. Once this part had been done, Inoairi would have been given specific instructions to go into Fanho's head and extract the memories both of his journey to the Land of Lightning & the Hidden Cloud, and of anyone whom he may have encountered in, around or along the way to the village. All of this would be done in a relatively peaceful manner provided the Awai Bannin decided to cooperate with the "requests" of a higher up under the guise that it was time for his monthly evaluation before being sent back out to serve the village. Naturally, he would be given no inclination to suspect anything out of the ordinary as with the last bits of additions to Konoha infrastructure, it wasn't uncommon for specific units dedicated to evaluation and mediation to be set locally around the village. If asked why an evaluation had been given so late in the day then Inoairi was under orders to say that there'd been a back-up in the number of done evaluations and that Fanho was supposed to have gone earlier but - due to "complications" his name had been pushed back until today. Frankly, it was a brilliant tactic and showcased the Anbu Commander's ability to have things done swiftly and covertly.

Gene may not have known about Fanho's little tryst in Lightning country but after Inoairi was finished with him, Gene would know almost as much as if he'd been there himself. He reached for the mug containing his chosen beverage and as Fanho continued to talk, Gene quietly sipped. Each time that his colleague mentioned allies or peace, Gene mentally groaned. It was almost as if the man did not grasp the concept that both of those terms were subjective and tentative at best in any doctrine involving Konoha, the standing ninja village of Fire country, and the ninja villages of other nations. Geographically, the land of fire is the only nation capable of putting together both assaults and trading routes with any of the smaller nations making up the continent and carries much richer soil and other such natural resources than each of the five. Based on that alone, it shouldn't have been hard to deduce that any agreement made for an alliance or trade would more than likely double as an attempt to land grab and draw in influence toward new custom and ways of living not conducive to Hi no Kunian society. To Gene the level of progression was natural; start allowing foreigners to abandon the restrictions of Fire country borders by allowing them entry and passage and one day, council members would wake up to find that their lines of defense have been broken, their Daimyo slain by some unidentifiable foreigner. Of course, this was a worst case scenario but was that not Gene's task as a member of the most Elite operations unit on the planet? Perhaps it'd been for this reason that he rose to the helm while the man sitting across from him had settled for a life of "playing ninja." Mentally, Gene sighed. I suppose...he wouldn't have that kind of foresight. Not Fanho, not the kind of guy he is. The thought had stung only because Gene had not expected to find a security breach in the form of one of his good friends and associates. Although, interestingly enough this would have been the second time that Gene had called into question Fanho's judgement.

It was clear that the man had risen to the rank of Bannin, one of the most prestigious honors available to any given Shinobi from the village. But his mind had still not yet truly registered the gravity of the situation, something that dated back as far as the ninja villages themselves perpetuated through the generations. There'd been no such thing as "true peace" or an "Ally" in this business of theirs. In the end, what Gene could not have known to say was that the terms behind the Rail road agreement were less conducive to Konoha's interest and more subservient to the interests and wills of Lightning country's Daimyo and Raikage; Nakijima, Hayate.''

Another sip. "I dunno..." Gene began, "Seems a bit strange for this to be happening now." The Jounin thoughtfully brushed his left hand against his chin, stroking it as if trying to rub his thoughts to the surface. Finally, after a brief pause he spoke again. "After all the Land of lightning from what I've read, is one of the few places that could potentially rival the Land of Fire in terms of natural resources. Why are they reaching out to us now?" Gene could feel an answer bubbling to the surface but for one reason or another, couldn't quite place it. ...What's your game, Raikage? Just what is it that you're really after? Gene thought hard to place the pieces where they fit, going down a mental check list of what he knew compared to what he'd learned about other great leaders in history: As always, there was a pattern...he just needed to find it. As he continued to think about the methodology used in the subduing of Lightning country as a continent Gene kept arriving to one conclusion: Power.

Whether or not he came out and said it himself these attempts to expand and outsource resources...it was all about obtaining power. Gene could feel a knot pulling at his stomach, then. "For as long as this village can remember it has seldom if ever kept ties with the Western continent and in history, Lightning country has never opted to assist the leaf before. Otherwise we could have used the aid back when Tousha had stepped down from his position and the village still needed dire repairs." Gene stated, raising his shoulders as if to shrug in mock confusion over the matter. "True. Obtaining potential allies and other valuable resources is paramount for the village's continued survival but -" Gene had been interrupted by the approach of another wait staff.

"Hi!" She exclaimed,"are you both doing okay? Can I get you refills on anything?
